My "must have" thai food when i go to Sydney. Love the pad thai here, and the donuts with pandan custard. Love how extensive the menu is. It gives me options to try some food that i can't find at other Thai restaurants. Most of the food are great. Noticed some inconsistency in the food in the last visit. Went on Saturday, we had a spot on yum woo sen. Came back on Monday, ordered the same thing, this time it was a bit too sour. But we finished it too

Been coming to this place for a nice quick meal or late night feed after playing volleyball for the last couple of years at least. Apart from the best authentic Thai dining experience, they also have the best service from the most beautiful people who serves us that we consider them as our close friends (like family, actually). I’m Thai who live in US but visit Sydney for my husband business trip. We were travel often and like to look for the good Thai restaurants in every town we go. Chat Thai in Thai Town, Sydney is the best one in our thought. We went there 3 times in 2 days, lunch and dinner. The authentic Thai foods there made me feel like I was eating in Thailand. Boat noodle, Yen Ta Fo, Somtum Kai Khem, Sai Ouah, Sai Krog Issarn, Kangsom Cha-Om Koong, Pla Chuchee, Todman Pla, Kanom Kroc, Kanom Bueng... all great , one of the best Thai restaurants in my mind.

I have been here several times and they never disappoint. Best pad thai and thai milk tea to find in Sydney. The staff are friendly and quick service. However, it is busy and wait time for a seat can be long during peak hours.
Will recommend and certainly come back.

A nice Cafe / Restaurant situated in the Thai Town of Sydney is also quite interesting for the kind of food they offer.

We ordered a Crab Fried Rice and a thai version of Khowsuey. Unfortunately, the did not have all the special teas mentioned on the menu so had to settle down with lemongrass flavor (but won't let this affect the rating as the dinning experience was quite good). We also ordered the thai version of coffee with condensed milk

Coffee was excellent, nicely flavored. Lemongrass was nothing exceptional...Just like any other lemongrass tea.

Khowsuey was easily the best dish of the day. Creamy, spicy, soupy and noodle-y .....Made quite a flavorful broth.

Crab meat rice was yummy too.

Plenty of options for Vegans and vegetarians. Attendants are very friendly. Quite easy on pocket as the quantity served is huge.

The most famous Thai cuisine in Sydney. Been there more than 10 times and always happy with the food. Fried crab omelette is my favorite dish among all other thai dishes like curry, tom yum and basil chicken mince.

A deluxe breakfast for me.
Toppings in the soup are good, like crispy pork skin and mince d beef.
Pork skewers are a little bit sweet, prefer skewers from Dodee.

Price is a little steep but that's fair enough as this place is always busy, even late night. I love how it closes at 2am. They have a variety of good dishes and would definitely recommend anything you're interested in. Just make sure you don't sit all the way to the back because it smells of toilet

I had the green papaya salad and the crab omelette. The salad was good but a little too salty. There was a generous amount of crab in the omelet but the omelette seemed to have been deep fried and I am not a great fan of the taste of crispy egg. I would come back however and try some of the other items on the extensive menu.

I was craving pad thai so badly. This one seemed like the top choice around me so off we go!

The pad thai got served last so I was full on attacking the coconut soup egg noodle. The chicken was cooked through so much the meat fell off the bone. Xihuahua 🐶 thought I spat the bone back into the bowl. Totally the restaurants’ fault. The noodle also had sour cabbage i there, very interesting.

Papaya salad with salted egg was an explosion of freshness and flavors. I especially liked the beans, dry shrimps and peanuts in there!

Pad thai had a fancy presentation. The flavor was very mild too. Really enjoyed it. The mixture of raw veg and cooked noodle drenched sweet savory sauce was great!

We also had two of the $1 desserts. They were overly sweet but the floral after taste was nice. I don’t think their service is friendly enough but they are efficient. I have seen busier places with better service. Price is quite ok.

All I can say is it’s incredible. The food is so authentic that I almost felt like I was eating in Thailand. The only downside is the atmosphere, it’s loud, servers are moving around really fast and feels a bit like an upscale cafeteria... and there’s quite a wait for a table, but well worth it. Highly recommend!

Chat Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants you could eat at in Sydney.

I’ve been coming here ever since I was younger and Chat Thai has honestly never disappointed. Situated in the heart of Thai Town (right opposite the Capitol Theatre), Chat Thai is a buzzing, busy restaurant which serves traditional Thai dishes at cheap prices.

Food is amazing, wide variety of menu options as well as quick and good service. I couldn’t recommend this restaurant more!!

One of the better Thai places I've been! When we went (for lunch), luckily we did not have to wait! The restaurant is quite noisy, and the restaurant is a bit cramped, but that just adds to the overall atmosphere! The staff are quite attentive and ready to help.
The menu is super extensive, and all the pictures look so delicious! Prices are quite decent as well. We tried the padt thai, padt ho, and the fresh spring rolls. The food arrived in a timely manner and looked just as good as they tasted!
The pad thai was one of the best I've had - definitely recommend! The padt ho was super, super spicy but had a strong punch of delicious flavour. The spring rolls was very refreshing and tasty, albeit on the dryer side.
I will definitely be back to try the other dishes!

While travelling in Sydney.... I waited for 35 minutes for seats and therefore was eager to be impressed. And I was! The pad Thai was one of the best I have had in a while. It was simple, but done right. The curries were just bang on. Infused with flavour, dense/thick sauce, yet soft protein and a good choice of vegetables to accompany it. Toilet and ambience of the place was poor... but the food was well worth the 5 star.

Came here for a Birthday dinner, had the Pad Thai and their Massaman Beef curry. Pad Thai was delicious, the noodles were thunk yet chewy with great texture. The curry was extremely flavourful, and while the beef was a little tough and could’ve been more tender, it tasted delicious. The potato on the side was perfect and soft. The portion was a little small but perfect for a single person. The restaurant it self is quite small and cramped but homey. The front kitchen is open for exhibit, and it was interesting to see the chefs cook. Overall the meal was great. The neighbouring table ordered the mango and sticky rice which looked amazing, so I’ll definitely be back to try that!

I've actually been here twice. Once for dessert only and another time as a large group for a friend's birthday. Both times I got the mango and sticky rice dessert which I highly recommend. Another dessert dish i tried had coconut and sago. Unfortunately I don't have photos of any of the other dishes but I think going there for dinner is pretty good and reasonably priced.

As for the ambience, the place had some cool lights which I added a picture of. The place is loud and exciting.

Probably the best Thai restaurant that I’ve tried in Sydney! The fried noodles and fried rice are great and aromatic. One down side is that the drinks and desserts tend to be too sweet. But other than that, it’s defo a great late night meal solution.

Well worth the wait. You will definately be on a waitlist for this cosy little place. If you're going I'm a group larger than 4, be prepared to knock elbows. Well proportioned food, bursting with freshness and flavour. I had the red duck curry, which had excellent duck pieces. The spicy green papaya salad with pork crackling- dig into this first! The pineapple fried rice was delicious, but if it were served in a pineapple would've made ahm excellent touch. All in all, a great joint.

Chat thai is a must go for me whenever I'm in Sydney. Taste is authentic. One of the better thai restaurant you can find outside of Thailand.

Khao ka moo (pork hock rice) - sauce was very flavourful and meat was really tender. Not forgetting the chilli, salty, sour and spicy. Best combination for the meat.

Boat noodle was flavourful enough not too salty.

The place is usually very crowded even on weekdays so if you want a place to chill this is not it. The staff are always rushing you from the moment you enter. We ordered fresh spring rolls, pad Thai shrimp, veg tofu chili basil noodles and chicken mince chili basil fried rice. They were all perfect. The ambience is nice and cozy too.

Definitely, a great Thai food Restaurant. The place was a bit cramped but I guess it was worth the wait and effort.

We were a large group and the servers were definitely very patient and helpful in explaining the dishes.

Interiors - Fairly modern and very ergonomically planned.
Service - Was very good and energetic.

Food :
- Green papaya salad with shrimp was really tasty and refreshing.
- Green curry of chicken was so luscious and tasty. The thai flavors were bursting in our mouths.
- Crispy fried whole snapper was something very different to what I've eaten in the past. The flavors definitely were innovated by their chef. Delectable dish.

Overall, a very authentic place for Thai cuisine.

Ordered:

-Padt Si Ew

These two menus are delicious and over the top, one of the best I have ever tried. The noodles are perfectly cooked, the chicken as well, they give a lot of veggies and other spices inside it, I enjoyed it so much. They have friendly staff as well, the food came around 10-20mins.😍😋

Highly recommended for family gathering, they have such authentic thai food flavors, very very flavorful.

Although the lines are long, it is definitely worth the wait! I love how this place opens late. I feel like all the dishes are tasty regardless of what you pick! My boyfriend and I pretty much just winged it and chose random items from the menu and every single one of them was delicious! I loved how the yellow curry had crab in it and the bbq pork had a really nice smoked flavour to it. I think you should come in groups to try everything on the menu!

This place serves the best Massaman I've had outside of Thailand. It puts to shame all the Thai establishments I've patronised in Melbourne in my pursuit of an authentic Massaman. Their green curry also packs a punch, much unlike the watered down, insipid stuff you'll find in my neck of the woods. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but I know authentic Thai food when I see it, and the food at Chat Thai is as authentic as one can hope for. Melbourne needs you, Chat Thai!

The best Thai food in town

Chat Thai is a Sydney institution. Hands down the best Thai food you can find in Sydney. And I personally endorse this restaurant in Chinatown than compared to any other. I've tried their place in the Pitt Street Mall and Circular Quay but they don't have the pzazz that the Chinatown one has in buckets.

I'm  a regular here as I used to work close by, I've tried their Padt Thai, their salads and desserts and all of them are delicious. My personal favourite though has to be the Chilli Fried Rice with Chicken with the Lodt Shong. I've asked them to spice the Fired rice up so many times that they've gradually increased the general spice level across all their dishes ;)

The heat from the rice sizzles your taste buds while the icy sweet drink brings it down to go for another spoonful of the fried rice. It's a beautiful medley of spice & sweet, heat and cold.

I've craved for food from here and have also traveled to this restaurant because I love it so much. The icing on the cake has to be that they are open late too.

Also please try the desserts here. They are fabulous too.

This place always has a queue during dinner time. The longest I've ever waited at this branch is more than 1 hour 15mins, it was a chaotic and unpleasant experience.
If you're walking in, try to be there before 6.30pm. Table will not be given unless all members of the party have arrived. The restaurant was busy as usual. The staff did not rush us through our main meal, maybe because we had dessert pre-ordered. The stir fried duck was very good, juicy, tender, and not too spicy. I found the som dtum lack of papaya, the serving was pretty small, good for just 2 people. Mango sticky rice was typical like any other you'd get elsewhere.
Overall, the experience was fine maybe due to the fact that we didn't need to wait for a table this time around. Public holiday surcharge 10% applies. Hope that goes to paying the staff.

My go-to spot when I crave authentic Bangkok hawker food. Every time. I have never eaten anything distasteful or boring, and the menu is extensive. Forget spring rolls - try something new - you will love it.The deserts are fantastic and rich, if you can fit it in (I order mine first). Beware however; they are very sweet.
The place is clean and the staff are oh-so friendly, and work hard to please.
The only problem is the long wait that is inevitable, but I don't mind because I spend time watching the staff cooking delicious street snacks. Take your pick, and add them to the bill to take home.Don't expect to have a quiet, intimate meal here. It is busy and full, and the acoustics are terrible.

This place is a gem in Sydney. Ordered the yellow curry with crab and fried rice with crab. Authentic flavours that seriously took me back to Thailand!!! Wished I brought a bigger appetite or group of people to try more dishes or desserts such as the "fritters" with pandan sauce that the chefs were frying up near the entrance. There was a queue at 9pm on Sunday but fortunately we waited only 10 mins for a table. Definitely returning back to this restaurant again in future for Thai food.

Though the Chat Thai empire stretches across Sydney, the Chinatown branch remains the best in my personal opinion. The queues are long so be prepared to wait. However they open late with a smaller supper menu so you might prefer to try for that instead. The food is generally consistent and delicious. Some recommendations: crab omelette, duck curry, tom yum goong, pork belly pad prik khing, fried snapper with Chinese celery. The atmosphere is noisy and buzzy, with barely any space between tables. But somehow, it just adds to the dining experience rather than detracts from it.

Chat Thai is one of my favourite Thai restaurant in Sydney. It offers nice Thai food. Pricing is reasonable. It's a popular restaurant and is usually busy at 6PM to 8PM.

[Entree, Grill, and salad]
The entree and grill is not their strength. {SOM DTUM THAI} is a special Thai salad which tastes a little sour and a little spicy.

[Main]
The curry can be treated as soup. It's good when combined with rice. I would recommend {Green Curry chicken} which is not very spicy.
{Pineapple fried rice} is a good choice for main. The rice has prawns and pineapples.

[Dessert]
I tried a lot of desserts. But I would only recommend {Mango sticky rice}, which is not always available. The sticky rice is hot and super sweet.

The service is OK, but sometimes staff are very busy, and you have to call multiple times.

Chat Thai is a Sydney institution. I'm not sure if the original was in Randwick or Chinatown (affectionately known as "Thaitown" on this strip), but the recent arrivals are definitely at Circular Quay and Westfield CBD. Regardless they must be doing something right, because in contrast to what usually happens when someone decides a restaurant is so successful it must replicated all over the city (e.g. Fratelli Fresh), in this case the quality has actually improved as further outlets have been opened. You can tell by the ratings - the later ones are rated even better than Randwick is. Still, nothing tops this one, and Chat Thai is a standout even in a street full of good Thai. The opening salvos for us were the chicken satay skewers (7) and the steamed wonton dumplings of chicken and prawn (10). The satay skewers were terrific but unfortunately the wonton dumplings were forgettable little parcels that struck me as kind of processed. No matter. Mains were grilled beef coconut curry with betel leaves (18) and red curry of five spice roast duck with thai basil and pineapple (19). Both curries delivered, and hit the it's-really-cold-outside-need-something-hot-and-spicy spot just perfectly. Including rice it was $60 for two, which is just right. Go now. They'll say they're booked out and its true, but give it five minutes and offer to share a table and you'll be fine.

Off the plane, checked in at the hotel, and straight to Chat Thai for a late lunch. Still as crowded as ever, still have to queue as per normal, and still as delicious as I remember it to be. Ordered the pad thai, the khao kha moo, and the crab meat khai jiao, and washed it all down with a glass of iced Thai milk tea. The pad thai is a must order here, and the khai jiao ridiculously delicious and crispy. The khao kha moo I have never tried on previous visits, and was delighted to find it was really good, with the provided preserved (pickled?) vegetables at the side a wondrous bite. Always a must visit for me in Sydney.

Been there 5 years ago and I remember we had to wait to be seated for dinner. Now returning, there’s still a line to wait for lunch? I would expect the hype to have died down. So people are definitely going / revisiting for the food!. We only waited for less than 10 minutes and was seated on a 4 people table~! I ordered a drink that I’ve never heard of: Bael Fruit. Slightly sweet but has a coffee aftertaste. Also a bit like coke, but not! Playful. It’s something different but I’d try their other drinks next time 🙂

However I felt table service on negative side. Food was pushed to one side of table without asking anything.

Well, my review is for Indian travellers who want to taste vegetarian Thai food. Honestly speaking this place doesn't have a lot of vegetarian options. They have hardly 2-3 dishes in veg.

So in case you wanna try Thai food then this is not the place for you. However, I must say that their services are good and the servers are ready to help you to figure out the best veg food option for you.

I tried their cold Thai tea, which really didn't satiate my taste buds.

So my rating is mainly for their top notch services.

Great Thai food in a central location. It was very busy and very hectic when we went, but the service was still friendly and food came out quickly. The only let down was the crab spring rolls, everything else was delicious. Not the cheapest Thai, but not extortionate! We will return when we go to the theatre across the road.

Went in at around 4.30pm and the menu still offered lunch items. It took us a while to actually read through all the items and picked what we wanted. We ordered a rice noodles soup with various toppings and a rice dish with roasted duck and special sauce. Both were delicious and generous portions but the noodles soup was a bit salty for my liking. I added a bit of vinegar to tone it down and it tasted much better. At the front of the house, they have freshly made desserts and also takeaway dishes at a cheap price. Staff is friendly and space is warm and inviting.

The food was amazing, and the waitress was really friendly. First off, we ordered a prawn curry, aunties noodles with prawn, a snapper dish and mango pudding. To be honest, the prawn curry and the snapper dish had a similar taste, but overall it was perfectly cooked. Aunties noodles was amazing! And the prawns were cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the latter. The woman waiting on us was awesome. She recommended the right dishes, paid attention to our empty glasses, and made us feel at home. Highly recommend.

What's a trip to Sydney without visiting the all famous Chat Thai. It may be a hyped up Thai restaurant but at least they kept the quality as authentic as possible. My second trip to this restaurant in the span of 1.5 months. This time, I visited with two of my visiting friends from Singapore and the quality did not disappoint me. Let the photos do their justice.

Was recommended by a friend and seeing the many reviews on Google, I decided to try it. Had to wait about 15min during peak dinner time. Many options to choose from, but decided to keep it simple with the pineapple fried rice and green curry. Food tastes good but saltier than what I’m used to back home. Seating can be a bit cramped so be prepared to be pretty close to your fellow diners.

The last time I visited Chat Thai was probably close to 8 years ago and their food today is still as good! Do remember to book as they can get very busy during dinner.

Authentic Thai in the middle of 'Thai-Town'. Quality ingredients and friendly staff with both eat in and takeaway available. Next door is Pontip which is the best Thai supermarket in Sydney and has everything you might need for coming at home. They lose a star because the portion sizes seem to have got smaller recently.
