Review Chat Thai Haymarket - Sydney

Natasha C
Great Thai food in a central location. It was very busy and very hectic when we went, but the service was still friendly and food came out quickly. The only let down was the crab spring rolls, everything else was delicious. Not the cheapest Thai, but not extortionate! We will return when we go to the theatre across the road.

Went in at around 4.30pm and the menu still offered lunch items. It took us a while to actually read through all the items and picked what we wanted. We ordered a rice noodles soup with various toppings and a rice dish with roasted duck and special sauce. Both were delicious and generous portions but the noodles soup was a bit salty for my liking. I added a bit of vinegar to tone it down and it tasted much better. At the front of the house, they have freshly made desserts and also takeaway dishes at a cheap price. Staff is friendly and space is warm and inviting.

The food was amazing, and the waitress was really friendly. First off, we ordered a prawn curry, aunties noodles with prawn, a snapper dish and mango pudding. To be honest, the prawn curry and the snapper dish had a similar taste, but overall it was perfectly cooked. Aunties noodles was amazing! And the prawns were cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the latter. The woman waiting on us was awesome. She recommended the right dishes, paid attention to our empty glasses, and made us feel at home. Highly recommend.

Pretty busy vibe and many tables. Mains were served before entree. Highlight was the red curry with winter melon had good flavours. Food was served pretty promptly despite how busy it was.

What's a trip to Sydney without visiting the all famous Chat Thai. It may be a hyped up Thai restaurant but at least they kept the quality as authentic as possible. My second trip to this restaurant in the span of 1.5 months. This time, I visited with two of my visiting friends from Singapore and the quality did not disappoint me. Let the photos do their justice.

Was recommended by a friend and seeing the many reviews on Google, I decided to try it. Had to wait about 15min during peak dinner time. Many options to choose from, but decided to keep it simple with the pineapple fried rice and green curry. Food tastes good but saltier than what I’m used to back home. Seating can be a bit cramped so be prepared to be pretty close to your fellow diners.

The last time I visited Chat Thai was probably close to 8 years ago and their food today is still as good! Do remember to book as they can get very busy during dinner.

Authentic Thai in the middle of 'Thai-Town'. Quality ingredients and friendly staff with both eat in and takeaway available. Next door is Pontip which is the best Thai supermarket in Sydney and has everything you might need for coming at home. They lose a star because the portion sizes seem to have got smaller recently.

My "must have" thai food when i go to Sydney. Love the pad thai here, and the donuts with pandan custard. Love how extensive the menu is. It gives me options to try some food that i can't find at other Thai restaurants. Most of the food are great. Noticed some inconsistency in the food in the last visit. Went on Saturday, we had a spot on yum woo sen. Came back on Monday, ordered the same thing, this time it was a bit too sour. But we finished it too

Amazing quality the larb dish i ordered was a bit too spicy for me but i still enjoyed it and the sticky mango rice was my favourite would recommend this place to everyone who loves thai if u dont mind the little wait

It’s not just at this restaurant, a lot of them suffer this: lousy chlorinated city tap water to wash down such lovely food. Not good. Filtered water would make this experience more enjoyable with filtered, sweet tasting, tap water. Please🙏🏻 O behalf of all of us who dine with you. Thank you

Ordered takeout for lunch today and my meat dish was cold and dry. In 15 mins from order to pick up food was cold, the only thing that was warm was the rice. Stay away from Chat Thai Circular Quay as they serve reheated dishes.

If there was a zero star I would go with that! My family and I went there today and were waiting to be seated and the lady at the counter appeared to have been doing some counter work but she just blatantly did not even give us one look and kept doing one thing. She looked like a manager or owner so this really took me by surprise. One simple 'will be right with you' was all that was needed but instead we got ignored and disrespected. We got sick of being ignored and called upon a waiter who (expression-wise) asked us if we had a booking. I told him we did not. He then proceeded to walk away and did not come back to us?!!??!! The service was just a slap in the face. I will never ever go back there again and I will tell all my friends the same deal. Such a shame as the original owner is friends with my brother. Only if he knew what his staff were like.

Been coming to this place for a nice quick meal or late night feed after playing volleyball for the last couple of years at least. Apart from the best authentic Thai dining experience, they also have the best service from the most beautiful people who serves us that we consider them as our close friends (like family, actually). Chat Thai Haymarket

This restaurant have to improve their food health security problem. It's really disgusting. We saw a very small cockroach in our water bottle. And the worst thing ...we already drink half bottle

Good food. Bad service. Over charged us with extra meal then another food did not came kept us waiting. Chat Thai at Thai town is always below standard service. Try the one at Pitt st.

Food is exceptionally good. I had crab curry with noodle it taste better than in Phuket itself. Services is so so, waiter and waitress's attitude need to change. For some reason Thai restuarants in Sydney had similar attitude when serving Thai people... not nice.

Best Thai I've had eaten so far!! The food was so delicious and the staff were so nice and friendly especially the girl with a really long hair! Highly recommended Chat Thai Campbell Street

Well worth the wait, the food is incredible. Will definitely come back when we are back in Sydney.

I’m Thai who live in US but visit Sydney for my husband business trip. We were travel often and like to look for the good Thai restaurants in every town we go. Chat Thai in Thai Town, Sydney is the best one in our thought. We went there 3 times in 2 days, lunch and dinner. The authentic Thai foods there made me feel like I was eating in Thailand. Boat noodle, Yen Ta Fo, Somtum Kai Khem, Sai Ouah, Sai Krog Issarn, Kangsom Cha-Om Koong, Pla Chuchee, Todman Pla, Kanom Kroc, Kanom Bueng... all great , one of the best Thai restaurants in my mind.

We came on a surprisingly not busy sunday , and probably the most disappointing dinning experience i’d ever received. The food came out quite quickly but the portion size is probably the worst i’d ever see. Pay nearly $20 for a papaya salad that would probably feed 1 person. The curry was quite nice, the tom sab soup was exactly how i want it, just the portion is a big problem. And while we still eating at the table, one of the staff come to our table to give the bill, which we don’t mind at all , but then after 5’ she came back again and open the check to see if we put money in or not, and then we asked we can pay now if she want and she told us to go downstairs to pay???? at this point we’re all annoying with the staffs attitude and just quickly pay and get out, and to mention our whole dinning time was around 30’. Would never come back again 🙅🏻‍♀️

I have been here several times and they never disappoint. Best pad thai and thai milk tea to find in Sydney. The staff are friendly and quick service. However, it is busy and wait time for a seat can be long during peak hours.
Will recommend and certainly come back.

A nice Cafe / Restaurant situated in the Thai Town of Sydney is also quite interesting for the kind of food they offer.

We ordered a Crab Fried Rice and a thai version of Khowsuey. Unfortunately, the did not have all the special teas mentioned on the menu so had to settle down with lemongrass flavor (but won't let this affect the rating as the dinning experience was quite good). We also ordered the thai version of coffee with condensed milk

Coffee was excellent, nicely flavored. Lemongrass was nothing exceptional...Just like any other lemongrass tea.

Khowsuey was easily the best dish of the day. Creamy, spicy, soupy and noodle-y .....Made quite a flavorful broth.

Crab meat rice was yummy too.

Plenty of options for Vegans and vegetarians. Attendants are very friendly. Quite easy on pocket as the quantity served is huge.

Mist visit

Me and my friend went on a Saturday evening after dinner for a second round of dessert in here and the waiter/supervisor was being really rude and disrespectful towards us. We barely sat there for 30 minutes but she kept on lurking at us and our plates as if she wanted us to leave as soon as possible, probably because we only order dessert. We find that extremely unprofessional and unpleasant. We understand that there is a que outside but we haven’t even finish our dessert and we were sitting there for a reasonable amount of time. Will not return, there are better thai restaurants woth better service
Anny
Delicious and large selection of dishes. Gluten free options too
Kimberley Kung
Food was really average.

Chat Thai is always consistently good in terms of food and quick and efficient service. The padt si-ew (pictured) is excellent and we always end our meal with the fried dough sticks (pictured). #chatthai

Used to come here often, always laughing and joking and having fun with the staff. Last time we were treated like cattle and patronised. There's better thai in the area now, so they need to improve to keep up.

The most famous Thai cuisine in Sydney. Been there more than 10 times and always happy with the food. Fried crab omelette is my favorite dish among all other thai dishes like curry, tom yum and basil chicken mince.
Li Fengli
A deluxe breakfast for me.
Toppings in the soup are good, like crispy pork skin and mince d beef.
Pork skewers are a little bit sweet, prefer skewers from Dodee.
Miss ya. 💑

Price is a little steep but that's fair enough as this place is always busy, even late night. I love how it closes at 2am. They have a variety of good dishes and would definitely recommend anything you're interested in. Just make sure you don't sit all the way to the back because it smells of toilet
Alexander Dobrovic
I had the green papaya salad and the crab omelette. The salad was good but a little too salty. There was a generous amount of crab in the omelet but the omelette seemed to have been deep fried and I am not a great fan of the taste of crispy egg. I would come back however and try some of the other items on the extensive menu.

My favourite to go in Sydney
The food are always great, the crab. meat, som tam, and chicken was so nice
I'll definitely go back

Spoiler alert: OVERRATED

I have mixed feelings about Chat Thai due to its ridiculously high reviews but average food standards. I visited the restaurant on many occasions to join the long queue of anxious diners, not by choice, but by curiosity and friends’ recommendation. It’s hard to deny my very high expectation for this restaurant, despite having not-so-pleasant experiences at Assámm, Boon Cafe, and other Chat Thai branches.

The other evening a friend of my insisted going to Chat Thai Haymarket for his favourite dish, seafood tomyum fried rice. Nested in a giant white plate, I spotted one soft boil egg, two prawns, and four cucumber slices. I thought I was mistaken but yes, seafood means two prawns. This took me back to the mussels, prawns, fish fillets, and squids from the tomyum fried rice served at an ordinary Thai dining.

The pad se ew- stir fried rice noodles, was nice. However the portion was so small. Same with the papaya salad, the fish in mango salad, the chicken satays. I don’t know how Chat Thai can charge so much for such humble portion. The small portions are common in Asia, but of course the pricing is much cheaper.

The tom saab- sour soup with pork soft bones was nothing compared to Home Thai.

The only highlight for me was the deep-fry soft shell crabs in curry sauce. Brought my Lao/ Thai chef friend with us, and she was surprised about the popularity of this restaurant.

The reviews come from majority of non-Thai diners, which explain for the high ratings. I’d prefer going to Tawandang, where most of my Thai friends go to, Green Peppercorn in Fairfield, Gangthai Rockdale (for the tomyum fried rice), and Home Thai (though Westernised, charges reasonable price, better food, better portion).

Just landed in Sydney and thought to have some nice supper. Saw this have high rating and thought to have a try
Ordered the spring roll, salad with salted duck egg yolk, pad si ew, and the mix pig inard.

Thought it will be impressing, but the taste of all of them are quite normal , not something I will be say WOW.

Got my order wrong, I ordered mini portion and when I made the payment, it is charged with full portion. I highlighted to the staff and then they check the dishes that we had on the table. They informed those food being served to us are normal portion. For a first timer, how would I know that you serve me mini or normal portion? Since we have eaten them, I doesn’t want to argue more..

*my comment on the food doesn’t affect by the payment issue. I think is overrated

I was craving pad thai so badly. This one seemed like the top choice around me so off we go!

The pad thai got served last so I was full on attacking the coconut soup egg noodle. The chicken was cooked through so much the meat fell off the bone. Xihuahua 🐶 thought I spat the bone back into the bowl. Totally the restaurants’ fault. The noodle also had sour cabbage i there, very interesting.

Papaya salad with salted egg was an explosion of freshness and flavors. I especially liked the beans, dry shrimps and peanuts in there!

Pad thai had a fancy presentation. The flavor was very mild too. Really enjoyed it. The mixture of raw veg and cooked noodle drenched sweet savory sauce was great!

We also had two of the $1 desserts. They were overly sweet but the floral after taste was nice. I don’t think their service is friendly enough but they are efficient. I have seen busier places with better service. Price is quite ok.

All I can say is it’s incredible. The food is so authentic that I almost felt like I was eating in Thailand. The only downside is the atmosphere, it’s loud, servers are moving around really fast and feels a bit like an upscale cafeteria... and there’s quite a wait for a table, but well worth it. Highly recommend!
Collin Phillip
This is the best Thai in town !! Come here many times, stable quality, but you need to wait for a while and the service is just average. And this Chat Thai branch is better than others.

Never been to such a racist and rude restaurant in my life. Chat Thai in Haymarket Campbell st.
I was there with my girlfriend, we were nicely dressed, we were waiting at the front counter to be sat down, everyone that was of oriental appearance who was there after us had priority. Two three or four people. The rude host would not even look at us. Im not sure if it was a he or she but he/she with the pony tail was a very rude and arrogant host. I asked three times for a table for two. He/she was very dismissive and took anyone who came after us if they were oriental appearance and even greeted them with a smile and gesture. I could not believe what I was seeing.
Then there finally was a table for two and the rude and arrogant host tried not to give us the table still ignored us. Then what this rude and arrogant host did was try to take us to a table to share with another person???

This was Tuesday 27/8 /19 around 10pm last night
To be greeted by this rude and arrogant person who is obviously not a happy person whould not be in a job and they have to try to ruin a customers experience??
The whole time, no smile no hallo no nothing and absolutely racist behaviour. I am very disappointed, the atmosphere looked great and cosy, and the food looked nice. We were so keen and happy to see this place, but We could not go back there because of this rude and arrogant host who has left a bad taste in our mouth.

Not sure what the owner of the company would say about a small minded person like this who represents their company but they do no deserve to be there.
We went across the road for Thai next to the theatre called Capital Thai and it was great the owners and staff were so friendly and made a night for us.

It is well-known in one Chinese APP so me and my friend came. However, it was a disappointing experience. The flavor of food was not good and I believe it was not fresh at all. For me, it is very unsatisfied and i will never come again.

Always my favorite Thai restaurant around cbd and the one at circular quay. The staffs are friendly, love the pad Thai and the sticky rice with mango and the refreshments! Excellent
David Minett
Had the Tom Yum fried rice. Prawns were thick and juicy and the flavour in the rice was nice and strong. It has a good atmosphere and was busy even on a monday. Everything here looks good. Will be back.

Overrated. The wait to get inside was around 30 minutes they had a fairly effective system of writing your name and calling your number though some people didn’t clue on, others came back late.
The service was fast inside and we tried the new online ordering system and it was incredible. Our food arrived so quick I didn’t know how it was possible. The contractors for the online app were frequently visiting the table which was killing the mood .
The food - well it was just mediocre ! It wasn’t the best Thai I’ve had. We had chicken skewers- they were okay. We had Dim sum they tasted very plastic-y
We had a beef massaman curry which was again just average - I’ve had better. We had the greens in oyster sauce they were the best part of the meal - they were crunchy and perfectly cooked.
Would I go again... probably not which is why it gets a 3 . Service was great though!

Visited Sydney and heard reviews that it was good. Never would we have expected that it was THIS good! We initially shared 4 main dishes between three people but our stomachs got the better of us and ordered another 2 more! Every dish was flavoursome, authentic and simply mouth watering!!
Josie
Most of the time PACKED INSANELY andthere is a small wait which is definitely worth it - Amazing atmosphere and interior decoration and spot on thai food :))

Food was a bit disappointing, I personally think Home Thai is much better. The pad thai was delicious ($14), but the fried snapper ($25) was pretty underwhelming in taste and portion size. I think in total I had 3 chunks of fish and a lot of raw onion and spring onion to garnish. Won't be back any time unfortunately. Service was also off.

Recommended by a friend and not disappointed! Love the fresh spring roll it’s delicious! Nice little shop with great decor and food!!! Very affordable price too for the quality of food!

Chat Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants you could eat at in Sydney.

I’ve been coming here ever since I was younger and Chat Thai has honestly never disappointed. Situated in the heart of Thai Town (right opposite the Capitol Theatre), Chat Thai is a buzzing, busy restaurant which serves traditional Thai dishes at cheap prices.

Food is amazing, wide variety of menu options as well as quick and good service. I couldn’t recommend this restaurant more!!

Food recommendation: chicken pad-see-ew🍽

Pictured below: chicken pad-see-ew, chicken pad Thai & yakult shake.

One of the better Thai places I've been! When we went (for lunch), luckily we did not have to wait! The restaurant is quite noisy, and the restaurant is a bit cramped, but that just adds to the overall atmosphere! The staff are quite attentive and ready to help.
The menu is super extensive, and all the pictures look so delicious! Prices are quite decent as well. We tried the padt thai, padt ho, and the fresh spring rolls. The food arrived in a timely manner and looked just as good as they tasted!
The pad thai was one of the best I've had - definitely recommend! The padt ho was super, super spicy but had a strong punch of delicious flavour. The spring rolls was very refreshing and tasty, albeit on the dryer side.
I will definitely be back to try the other dishes!

Food was clean, service was okay however we had the Pad Thai & Pad see ew which were pretty bland. proportions were pretty average. Overall okay
Linda
While travelling in Sydney.... I waited for 35 minutes for seats and therefore was eager to be impressed. And I was! The pad Thai was one of the best I have had in a while. It was simple, but done right. The curries were just bang on. Infused with flavour, dense/thick sauce, yet soft protein and a good choice of vegetables to accompany it. Toilet and ambience of the place was poor... but the food was well worth the 5 star.
Sunshine
Came here for a Birthday dinner, had the Pad Thai and their Massaman Beef curry. Pad Thai was delicious, the noodles were thunk yet chewy with great texture. The curry was extremely flavourful, and while the beef was a little tough and could’ve been more tender, it tasted delicious. The potato on the side was perfect and soft. The portion was a little small but perfect for a single person. The restaurant it self is quite small and cramped but homey. The front kitchen is open for exhibit, and it was interesting to see the chefs cook. Overall the meal was great. The neighbouring table ordered the mango and sticky rice which looked amazing, so I’ll definitely be back to try that!
Hungriestsam - Samantha
I've actually been here twice. Once for dessert only and another time as a large group for a friend's birthday. Both times I got the mango and sticky rice dessert which I highly recommend. Another dessert dish i tried had coconut and sago. Unfortunately I don't have photos of any of the other dishes but I think going there for dinner is pretty good and reasonably priced.

As for the ambience, the place had some cool lights which I added a picture of. The place is loud and exciting.
Melissa C
Probably the best Thai restaurant that I’ve tried in Sydney! The fried noodles and fried rice are great and aromatic. One down side is that the drinks and desserts tend to be too sweet. But other than that, it’s defo a great late night meal solution.
Foodie_Pri
Well worth the wait. You will definately be on a waitlist for this cosy little place. If you're going I'm a group larger than 4, be prepared to knock elbows. Well proportioned food, bursting with freshness and flavour. I had the red duck curry, which had excellent duck pieces. The spicy green papaya salad with pork crackling- dig into this first! The pineapple fried rice was delicious, but if it were served in a pineapple would've made ahm excellent touch. All in all, a great joint.
T
Chat thai is a must go for me whenever I'm in Sydney. Taste is authentic. One of the better thai restaurant you can find outside of Thailand.

Khao ka moo (pork hock rice) - sauce was very flavourful and meat was really tender. Not forgetting the chilli, salty, sour and spicy. Best combination for the meat.

Boat noodle was flavourful enough not too salty.
Custardbun
I thought we might grab an early dinner on Sunday, but at 6pm, there was already a queue! We waited about 30 mins after writing our name on the self service list before our number was called. We shared a table with a couple of strangers, otherwise we would have waited longer. The red duck curry was good, as was the smoky grilled pork neck. The Thai Town outlet has slightly lower prices than Circular Quay or Westfield, but it’s definitely not a relaxed experience. The restaurant is quite small, and you are sitting almost back to back with the next table. Staff seemed to rush you out as soon as you put your fork down! The pay station needs to be reconfigured to accomodate those trying to pay their bill, those ordering or picking up takeaway orders, menulog/Uber Eats/Deliveroo drivers and those waiting for a table.
Annee
My go to Thai place for a late feed, or a top up before lockout to get ready for a night of drinking.

Pros: opens till late, suitable for large groups, abundance in variety of food n drinks, low cost so you can save that coin for your alchi later

Cons: lining up for a while on weekends

I cannot believe that I haven’t reviewed this place after many fantastic dine experiences here. After been to Thailand, I truly appreciate the authentic Thai food and more subtle taste of Thai food in Sydney. This is a place always amazes me from many aspects. Loved the hot sour fish we’ve had tonight and the crab meat fried rice.. every has made just quite right. Will keep on coming back here..
Michelle
The place is usually very crowded even on weekdays so if you want a place to chill this is not it. The staff are always rushing you from the moment you enter. This is the only bad point of the restaurant. The food is by far the best Thai food I've tried in Sydney. We ordered fresh spring rolls, pad Thai shrimp, veg tofu chili basil noodles and chicken mince chili basil fried rice. They were all perfect. The ambience is nice and cozy too.
The Violet
I was told this is where Chat Thai started, in the Thai Town near Capital Theatre. Like all other Char Thai chains, there is always a queue during peak hours.

I have been going there for years and quality and taste of the food have never disappointed me.
Geeta Ahuja Thapar
Best Thai food in town. Tried many things and was never disappointed. Very resonably priced

Good variety of dishes and all very flavour full.
Would definitely recommend.
Nuj De Castro
Amazing experience! I enjoyed the food. This Thai restaurant was one for the books. The interior architecture was also impressive. There were much people so there was a long queue. Ordered grilled tiger prawns, squid, veggies and strawberry shake. Of course, with a cup of rice! Love the dishes! I recommend this place!

If there's one place you have to go to Sydney for some thai food. It's Chat Thai. I always come here whenever I visit Sydney. Recommend the Padt Thai and Padt Si-Ew.
Wayne Burns
Chat Thai continues to serve delicious food. And while most of the waiting staff are courteous, the seating allocation service can be surly, which is not what long term (or any) patrons of the restautant expect.

And for some reason unknown to good service, the air conditioning does not work (one of the waiters said he at never worked in the time they’d worked there) making eating in the mezzanine level on warm days very unpleasant.

That the air conditioning does not work is either lazy or deliberate on behalf of management. That the staff have to put up with long shifts in the heat because management will not repair the air conditioning speaks volumes about its attitude to
Its employees, and its customers.

If it’s hot, give this place a miss until day cools down.

We ordered a variety of entrees and mains for a group of 6 ppl. Firstly, the food were way too salty, from their papaya salad to the yellow crab curry 🤯. And I'm talking about impossible to eat salty without the aid of plain rice or other alternatives to help balance the saltiness.
Secondly, a few of the female waiters were rather rude (which is a bit unusual). They made us feel like being there at the restaurant was an inconvenient to them. I took my family there because of the high rating on here, but I'm starting to wonder how it managed to get that reading 🤔

Definitely, a great Thai food Restaurant. The place was a bit cramped but I guess it was worth the wait and effort.

We were a large group and the servers were definitely very patient and helpful in explaining the dishes.

Interiors - Fairly modern and very ergonomically planned.
Service - Was very good and energetic.

Food :
- Green papaya salad with shrimp was really tasty and refreshing.
- Green curry of chicken was so luscious and tasty. The thai flavors were bursting in our mouths.
- Crispy fried whole snapper was something very different to what I've eaten in the past. The flavors definitely were innovated by their chef. Delectable dish.

Overall, a very authentic place for Thai cuisine.

Gorgeous food, very authentic. It was busy and that added to the great atmosphere. The service was friendly and plentiful, nothing to complain about here, just a lovely meal!
Hayley
Food was delicious! Really liked the ambience. It could have been the best Thai restaurant if only the staffs were lil more friendly. I'd visit again tho :)
JoJo
Wait for 30min for the seat, we both think worth it, food was very tasty, so was the desert. yellow curry crab meat was nice but way toooooo spicy!!!! Even Sichuan people can not handle it, we did’t finished.

CHAT THAI @CBD✨

One of the best thai food in Sydney and it is highly recommended. This place is almost always crowded, and they open until pretty late as well. So glad it close until pretty late around 2AM, soooo perfect for midnight snacks

Ordered:
-Padt thai
-Padt Si Ew

These two menus are delicious and over the top, one of the best I have ever tried. The noodles are perfectly cooked, the chicken as well, they give a lot of veggies and other spices inside it, I enjoyed it so much. They have friendly staff as well, the food came around 10-20mins.😍😋

Highly recommended for family gathering, they have such authentic thai food flavors, very very flavorful.

Rate? 5✨

Although the lines are long, it is definitely worth the wait! I love how this place opens late. I feel like all the dishes are tasty regardless of what you pick! My boyfriend and I pretty much just winged it and chose random items from the menu and every single one of them was delicious! I loved how the yellow curry had crab in it and the bbq pork had a really nice smoked flavour to it. I think you should come in groups to try everything on the menu!
Pat Aspiras
My favorite go-to Thai restaurant so far in Sydney! Doesn’t disappoint! Restaurant gets quite busy so make sure you book ahead or go early. Love the salads, the curry and the satay/skewers. Comfort food!

This place serves the best Massaman I've had outside of Thailand. It puts to shame all the Thai establishments I've patronised in Melbourne in my pursuit of an authentic Massaman. Their green curry also packs a punch, much unlike the watered down, insipid stuff you'll find in my neck of the woods. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but I know authentic Thai food when I see it, and the food at Chat Thai is as authentic as one can hope for. Melbourne needs you, Chat Thai!
Moodie_Foodie
The best Thai food in town

Chat Thai is a Sydney institution. Hands down the best Thai food you can find in Sydney. And I personally endorse this restaurant in Chinatown than compared to any other. I've tried their place in the Pitt Street Mall and Circular Quay but they don't have the pzazz that the Chinatown one has in buckets.

I'm a regular here as I used to work close by, I've tried their Padt Thai, their salads and desserts and all of them are delicious. My personal favourite though has to be the Chilli Fried Rice with Chicken with the Lodt Shong. I've asked them to spice the Fired rice up so many times that they've gradually increased the general spice level across all their dishes ;)

The heat from the rice sizzles your taste buds while the icy sweet drink brings it down to go for another spoonful of the fried rice. It's a beautiful medley of spice & sweet, heat and cold.

I've craved for food from here and have also traveled to this restaurant because I love it so much. The icing on the cake has to be that they are open late too.

Also please try the desserts here. They are fabulous too.

This place always has a queue during dinner time. The longest I've ever waited at this branch is more than 1 hour 15mins, it was a chaotic and unpleasant experience.
If you're walking in, try to be there before 6.30pm. Table will not be given unless all members of the party have arrived. The restaurant was busy as usual. The staff did not rush us through our main meal, maybe because we had dessert pre-ordered. The stir fried duck was very good, juicy, tender, and not too spicy. I found the som dtum lack of papaya, the serving was pretty small, good for just 2 people. Mango sticky rice was typical like any other you'd get elsewhere.
Overall, the experience was fine maybe due to the fact that we didn't need to wait for a table this time around. Public holiday surcharge 10% applies. Hope that goes to paying the staff.

The food was great. But the waitress was horrible. Terrible service. Her name is M**k. She was so indifferent to us at first. But she changed her attitude later somehow. Probably got scared of getting a bad review. I have no words. Definitely recommend pad Thai.

My #1 go to Thai joint whenever I'm in Sydney. Strongly recommend their Pad Thai & Papaya Salad, Soft Shell Crab & desserts. I love it how they're open till 2AM on Saturday night. Do expect long waits as this is a very popular restaurant.

First time came here was 4-5 years ago. Still remember the pork skewers were so good that I wanted to take away some back home. Came here again few days ago and the food still taste as good as I remember. The food is so flavorsome and I don’t feel thirsty (from MSG) after. Will come back again next time when we come to Sydney.

Very long wait, food is alright but a little too salty for me. And I think the serving size is a bit small. The price based on the volume is a little high.

My go-to spot when I crave authentic Bangkok hawker food. Every time. I have never eaten anything distasteful or boring, and the menu is extensive. Forget spring rolls - try something new - you will love it.The deserts are fantastic and rich, if you can fit it in (I order mine first). Beware however; they are very sweet.
The place is clean and the staff are oh-so friendly, and work hard to please.
The only problem is the long wait that is inevitable, but I don't mind because I spend time watching the staff cooking delicious street snacks. Take your pick, and add them to the bill to take home.Don't expect to have a quiet, intimate meal here. It is busy and full, and the acoustics are terrible.
Food For Thought
This place is a gem in Sydney. Ordered the yellow curry with crab and fried rice with crab. Authentic flavours that seriously took me back to Thailand!!! Wished I brought a bigger appetite or group of people to try more dishes or desserts such as the "fritters" with pandan sauce that the chefs were frying up near the entrance. There was a queue at 9pm on Sunday but fortunately we waited only 10 mins for a table. Definitely returning back to this restaurant again in future for Thai food.

Ambiance and service are quite nice, food is not that impressive, maybe its because I live in South East Asia and Thai food is quite accessible. We had Som Dtum Thai salad it was presented will and sour taste dominated, good alternative for pasta, after that we ordered Pad Thai Ho, waiter warned us that its super spicy, but at the end its not, may be it applies only Australians.

Came here with a friend for dinner tonight. There was a line but thankfully not a long wait. We thankfully managed to beat the crowds. Not long after we were seated, the waitress came to take our order, but we were not ready, and asked for more time. The service was not particularly friendly, the waitress was quite abrupt even before we told her we needed more time.
I ordered Amy's noodles and for dessert the young coconut ice cream and sweet sticky rice topped with candied palm seeds, sweet potato in syrup and roasted peanuts. My friend had the gaeng sohm cha-om goong, and for dessert the sticky rice with mango.
Amy's noodles was delicious. The egg noodles had a nice bite, the flavour was a nice rich combination of saltiness and slight spice. There were two big juicy king prawns, and a reasonable amount of choi sum and wombok. Having said that, I think the flavour at the Circular Quay store was even better from memory.
I tried some of my friend's curry, which again was a really rich flavour, but slightly too salty. There was a very pungent smell of something that I couldn't quite put my finger on.. like..... shrimp paste or crab paste in the curry? A little bit unexpected, and can be off-putting for those not used to these flavours (I thought it was good). My friend found the curry too heavy and salty and wasn't able to finish the dish with her side order of rice.
The coconut icecream had only a very subtle taste of coconut. The sticky rice was fragrant and sweet. The roasted peanuts also added a nice fragrance and flavour to the dish. Everything combined really well, but I only realised when I got home and had another look at the photo of the menu that I realised.. there was no sweet potato in the dessert I received...
The sticky rice with mango was also delicious. Before they brought it out, they came out to ask my friend if it was alright that the mango tonight was sweet but also slightly sour, which I felt was a nice touch.
At some point we finished our jar of water, and it was taken away, so we thought it would be replenished, but it never appeared again.
As soon as we were finished eating, plates were cleared immediately and we were unceremoniously handed the bill. There was a long line, so it was understandable they were trying to rush us out, but they could have been more friendly. Honestly I would have scored them a 4 had their service been better as the food was actually really delicious, but I did strongly feel that the service did take away from the experience.

Good food with bad service. They take my drink away even I haven’t finish it. I understand weekend night is busy but it isn’t the excuse to push me to pay the bill immediately. If we want to stay awhile, we have to order more. First time to be treated like that in Sydney restaurant. Disappointed.

Though the Chat Thai empire stretches across Sydney, the Chinatown branch remains the best in my personal opinion. The queues are long so be prepared to wait. However they open late with a smaller supper menu so you might prefer to try for that instead. The food is generally consistent and delicious. Some recommendations: crab omelette, duck curry, tom yum goong, pork belly pad prik khing, fried snapper with Chinese celery. The atmosphere is noisy and buzzy, with barely any space between tables. But somehow, it just adds to the dining experience rather than detracts from it.
Had never been here before, so come here with friends. Looking the queue always long, made me wonder how the food tastes like. I am not a expert in Thai food, but we ordered Musman Curry, Papaya Salad, Crying Tiger and Chicken Pad See Euw.
🍛- Musman Curry was fine, I would say a bit too sweet, and I don’t know but I feel like I didn’t really taste the creamy coconut milk in the soup.
🥗- Papaya Salad was pretty good, a bit of spice, and rich in flavours.
😭 🐅- The crying tiger was quite good. The sauce on the side makes a bit spicy and the meat also juicy.
🍝- Chicken Pad See Euw was okay.

Overall, I would give 3.5/5, food was decent, but I would say the portion isn’t that big in size.

WORST SERVICE EVER IN MY LIFE. I TOOK MY FAMILY TO EAT THERE AFTER WE ARRIVE IN SIDNEY FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. WE ARE 5 PEOPLE AND SHE SIT US IN A REALLY SMALL CIRCLE TABLE. WE SEE A COCASSION GUY COSISTING OF 2 PEOPLE SITTING IN 4 MAN TABLE. WE ASK TO MOVE TO A SLIGHTLY BIGGER TABLE THAT COULD HOLD 6 PEOPLE. WE ARE DECLINED VERY BADLY. REALLY THE WORST SERVICE IN MY LIFE. THE RESTAURANT IS NOT EVEN FULL. STILL A LOT OF TABLE EMPTY.

Chat Thai is one of my favourite Thai restaurant in Sydney. It offers nice Thai food. Pricing is reasonable. It's a popular restaurant and is usually busy at 6PM to 8PM.

[Entree, Grill, and salad]
The entree and grill is not their strength. {SOM DTUM THAI} is a special Thai salad which tastes a little sour and a little spicy.

[Main]
The curry can be treated as soup. It's good when combined with rice. I would recommend {Green Curry chicken} which is not very spicy.
{Pineapple fried rice} is a good choice for main. The rice has prawns and pineapples.

[Dessert]
I tried a lot of desserts. But I would only recommend {Mango sticky rice}, which is not always available. The sticky rice is hot and super sweet.

The service is OK, but sometimes staff are very busy, and you have to call multiple times.

I loved it! The food i ordered (crispy pork with kailan) was so good i have been thinking about it all week! Plus it was only $13 and most of the dishes are quite cheap. Cant wait to be back in Sydney and try the more of their food!!

Chat Thai is a Sydney institution. I'm not sure if the original was in Randwick or Chinatown (affectionately known as "Thaitown" on this strip), but the recent arrivals are definitely at Circular Quay and Westfield CBD. Regardless they must be doing something right, because in contrast to what usually happens when someone decides a restaurant is so successful it must replicated all over the city (e.g. Fratelli Fresh), in this case the quality has actually improved as further outlets have been opened. You can tell by the ratings - the later ones are rated even better than Randwick is. Still, nothing tops this one, and Chat Thai is a standout even in a street full of good Thai. The opening salvos for us were the chicken satay skewers (7) and the steamed wonton dumplings of chicken and prawn (10). The satay skewers were terrific but unfortunately the wonton dumplings were forgettable little parcels that struck me as kind of processed. No matter. Mains were grilled beef coconut curry with betel leaves (18) and red curry of five spice roast duck with thai basil and pineapple (19). Both curries delivered, and hit the it's-really-cold-outside-need-something-hot-and-spicy spot just perfectly. Including rice it was $60 for two, which is just right. Go now. They'll say they're booked out and its true, but give it five minutes and offer to share a table and you'll be fine.

Milk tea is really good . But food just okay. But my friend really love Thai food, so she love it all. Small place but warm and friendly staffs.

This chat thai is better than the one on the top of sydney westfield, food tastes better but i preferred their service less
Overall the food is good and would recommend/ return

Probably abt a 30 minute wait for a table but it was worth it. The stir fried pork belly with red curry (number 55) is to die for! Spicy but you'll keep eating it coz it's so good!

Food was amazing !!! The Gaeng Fang tasted like home 😢 refillable rice was a plus too. The service was excellent, workers were really efficient.

This place is fkn epic. Great great thai food at super late night. They are open until 2am on the weekends. Yeah that's right you can wander in at 1 and get some next level Thai food. The meat skewers are so tasty. Pork or chicken. They have really good Thai desserts. It is pretty busy a lot of the time. There is a decent chance you will have to line up. I am not a fan of lining up but I would for this place. I have and will would again.

Off the plane, checked in at the hotel, and straight to Chat Thai for a late lunch. Still as crowded as ever, still have to queue as per normal, and still as delicious as I remember it to be. Ordered the pad thai, the khao kha moo, and the crab meat khai jiao, and washed it all down with a glass of iced Thai milk tea. The pad thai is a must order here, and the khai jiao ridiculously delicious and crispy. The khao kha moo I have never tried on previous visits, and was delighted to find it was really good, with the provided preserved (pickled?) vegetables at the side a wondrous bite. Always a must visit for me in Sydney.

Been there 5 years ago and I remember we had to wait to be seated for dinner. Now returning, there’s still a line to wait for lunch? I would expect the hype to have died down. So people are definitely going / revisiting for the food!. We only waited for less than 10 minutes and was seated on a 4 people table~! I ordered a drink that I’ve never heard of: Bael Fruit. Slightly sweet but has a coffee aftertaste. Also a bit like coke, but not! Playful. It’s something different but I’d try their other drinks next time 🙂

Food here seriously remind me of phi phi island in Thailand. I had my best thai food experience there. Whatever we ordered looked fabulous and tasty and it didn,t disappointed us. Spices on perfect and didn,t felt like I need any additional sauce or chillis.

However I felt table service on negative side. Food was pushed to one side of table without asking anything.

Located Sydney cbd area . If I thinking for a supper yes this definitely good placed , with good atmosphere dining environment. Yes need to queue up waiting because lot of people , then customer service is good , the food is tasty, and price is reasonable. Cheers

The food has a very strong flavour, too salty, too sour and too sweet for me. But if you like strong flavour you will enjoy it. Pricely cheap and service is a bit dissapointing, maybe they are so busy that they dont really care.

Always so busy even into the hours of the night, so be prepared to wait or try to make a booking! Definitely, a go-to when you're in Sydney or want good Thai and good service. Love their Thai dessertsWould help if their menu was marked with GF/VG/V options

Delicious Thai food and it is well presented. The location of the restaurant is perfect. The beverage selection is good and it tastes great.

Well, my review is for Indian travellers who want to taste vegetarian Thai food. Honestly speaking this place doesn't have a lot of vegetarian options. They have hardly 2-3 dishes in veg.

So in case you wanna try Thai food then this is not the place for you. However, I must say that their services are good and the servers are ready to help you to figure out the best veg food option for you.

I tried their cold Thai tea, which really didn't satiate my taste buds.

So my rating is mainly for their top notch services.

Went here on a weeknight with a big group of friends. The food was delicious however the service was horrible! The entrees came out at all different times throughout the night, many came after mains. I also received my main, lemongrass chicken, and slowly ate half of it before the rice we ordered finally came.

Have been to Chat Thai multiple times, but this place blows my mind every single time. The curries are amazing and very authentic. I love the pineapple fried rice and my personal favorite is the coconut drink.
Price is on the higher side of the value but the place is worth every penny.
