Been wanting to come here for a long while now and finally had the time and appetite recently (Sunday lunch).
Had the Mary's burger, half bird and mashed potato. Everything was amazing and I was blissed out as I made my way through the meal, sipped on my icy cold pint and rocked on to a great selection of music including Hunters & Collectors and Grinspoon. The staff are also super nice and professional.
Highly recommend the Bloody Mary as well.
Great atmosphere. The burgers are great. The fried chicken is so succulent. I habe to say the quality has not changes. Always on point. My wife and I love this place and recommend it every chance we get
I'm not joking the best burger I have ever had ! I would fly back from England just to eat Mary's burgers ! I had like one a day for a week once :0 and I don't even like burgers that much !!! :) fucking heavenly
This place is fucking rad, hands down fave place for a burger and a drink with my pals
Best burgers, best vibe, best people. We drive from Manly way more often than we should!
I had the Marys burger with trashcan bacon. Hands down the best burger and fries I've eaten!!
One of the best restaurants I love the food as a chef myself I would love to work in a place like this
I had to move from Sydney because the burgers were too good and I was probably going to die from eating too many.
Have been to Mary's twice now
Headed over from Dee why
Can easily say its my favourite burger in sydney . Can't wait to try the chicken
Very friendly staff , fast service and great Vibe .. see you again very soon x
Actually the best burger I’ve possibly ever had!!! And what a mad set up!
Such a unique, interesting place to eat at in Newtown. It’s a very dark and dimly lit restaurant with great vibes and excellent service from bar and floor staff. Cheap and delicious food with a wide assortment of beers and wines to choose from to accompany your dish.
Very cool place . Rock and roll style , need to take time to fit in environment . Service girl are so hoooot ,inside was quit dark ,please don’t wear sun glass . New town mist come place , love burger and killed it
definitely definitely not over huped and worth it. A burger thats messy but in the best way possibly in the most laid back environment that u can enjoy a jug of beer with :))
I loved it actually. Usually high ratings are a set up for high expectations and failure but this was actually quite good. There can be a bit of wait but I liked it.
Great burger and fries!! There’s seating upstairs but you’ll have to wait to be seated. Normally doesn’t take too long, especially if you’re not in a large group. Pretty cool place but don’t expect to have a nice conversation during your meal as the music is loud!
Nothing beats a Mary’s burger!! Easily one of the best burger places in Sydney. Yes it is greasy but its a burger after all ! Their fried chicken is also amazing but definitely a burger is a must if its your first time. The potato and gravy is 👌👌👌👌. Love marys! Also! Make sure you try their slayer juice beer!
I hadn’t been to Mary’s in years and the burgers and fries were as good as I remembered. I love the hipster vibes, the staff are friendly and the tunes are definitely winning. #marys
My absolute favourite burger joint to date . No other burger has topped the taste of Mary’s. This burger joint needs to replace maccas !! 1st in the burger game 😍
This place is the absolute cultural church. Venues like this make a city fun to visit and live in. Unlike Justin Hemmes, these guys actually own venues that are intetesting and trendy. I love the 'stuff you' attitude they have, we'll do it our way kinda vibe. The lighting, metal music, awesome art everywhere is sick and the food is delicious. Especially the chicken, absolute cracking feed but a little pricey in the end. Amazing atmosphere, experiential rock bar
Amazing staff and loved the chicken. The staff is really very good and the food tastes great as well. Great place to be with friends. Also, loved the burgers.
i wrote a review than i deleted it by accident
good burgers and good drinks
and i apologise to those who get offended by things that really have no effect on your life, have a laugh or don't and move on too much crap in this world to get upset over this.
i could really use a burger right now.
Very cool place if you like loud rock music paired with tasty burgers. This place in Newtown is a must for its unique concept and style. Highly recommended!
Had the chicken burger, best burger I’ve ever had! It’s going to be so hard going back to Melbourne and finding one that’s just as good.
Atmosphere is super grunge 🖤 Nothing quite like it anywhere else. Highly recommend.
Legendary burgers, easily the best I've had in my time in Sydney. The Patty's are mind bendingly juicy.
Staff is friendly and great. Loved my experience. It's definitely a bang for the buck.
Love the vibes. Love the chicken. Love the staff. They were super funny and energetic! Everyone raves about the burgers here but I don’t think their that great...but their fried chicken is awesome!
Best burger I've had in awhile! The service was a little slow but loved the vibe of this place. Great place to hang out with friends and have a drink.
Best place ever love the the mash and gravy love the chicken best customer service if i could id love to work for this place one day as a chef myself its a place to die for
What a burger!
The flavour is so delicious that you want more and more and more. The meat patty is juicy and the sauce very tasty.
The burger comes with shoestring fries. However, for the size of the burger, it’s quite expensive.
Not an extensive menu and the menu is not very explanatory. I’m sure staff have to answer the same questions all the time.
The burger is presented on a little plastic basket. So when putting sauce on the chops, be mindful that the sauce will likely seep through the holes.
The venue itself is very grunge which is really cool. Dark lighting. Drawings on the wall. Plenty of seating and spacious.
This place blows my mind every damn time. It’s an alternative scene with loud mostly rock and alternative tunes blaring so if that isn’t your thing, don’t go. The staff are friendly and juggle a load of burgers and beers like magic and never forget your order even though not writing a thing. Skills!
The Mary’s burger is my go to and it comes with fries. You’ve got to get the mash and gravy too. The meat is cooked to perfection and there’s a huge selection of booze to choose from. Love this place.
Actual rating:3.5/5
Mary’s must have been the most obscure entrance to a foodie place / bar that I’ve ever encountered. Hidden away in a dark dodgy looking alley, you find a door framed with graffiti, emitting a soft glow of red light and a security guard outside. There is no signage at all. Inside, it’s loud, dimly lit but friendly vibes all around. The menu is written in chalk along the walls and decor is made up of old alcohol bottles, dripping candle wax and graffiti art. Anyways, I ordered the cheeseburger which came with a decent serving of fries for $17 in total. They offer tabasco and tomato sauce with the fries. The burger was good but it wasn’t anything mindblowingly amazing. I wouldn’t go out of my way to try Mary’s.
I’d previously only been to the takeaway outlet in the city. Same burgers here with quality ingredients but the Newtown original didn’t overcook the patties as much, so it must be one of the best small simple burgers around here. Only problem is that $17 is about 50% more than a reasonable price for such small simple burgers. However, this place does operate as a funky bar, which ups the value considerably.
Went there on a Friday night with my girlfriends and loved the vibes. Since we reached the place on a decent time, we made straight to a table with no waiting time. Had few drinks and a burger which was delicious. The music was heavy metal which was mind blowing. We were head banging the whole time we were there.

I always go for the same thing on the menu (written on the ceiling) ‘Mary’s burgers’ the buns are exceptionally soft and the burger itself is just too good. You must try it to believe it. On the side I get chicken with gravy but by the time I finish the burger, I’m always too full to finish the chicken, but this doesn’t stop me from ordering extra on the side!
Mary's has been on my list of places to try for quite some time now, so excited is an understatement when we finally got the opportunity to eat the burgers. Unique is probably the most appropriate word to describe the restaurant.
Walking in I didn't even realise we had reached the burger place. It's literally a random door you walk into without much signage. Once inside you see an extremely dark and dimly lit restaurant with loud music. The music was definitely not my taste, and upstairs it wasn't so loud which was good. As someone that loves a lot of natural lighting, and someone that generally feels uncomfortable in dark spaces, the first 5 minutes made e extremely uneasy especially with the blacked out windows.
I warmed up a little when we were served by really friendly staff, that were really prompt with bringing around the water too. We ordered the Mary's burger and the mushroom burger - and for $15 you not only get the burger, but you get tasty shoestring fries too! The food was served to us pretty quickly, and the fries were fresh (thank goodness not soggy).
The Mary's burger was good, but the patty was far too pink for my liking. The fillings were generous, and the sauce was evenly spread, but I think it lacked a sort of edge to the burger. It was a little bland. I added some hot sauce to see if it would help, which it did just a tiny bit. The mushroom burger is quite tasty, and a great vegetarian option. The best things is that it is just as filling and just as substantial as the other burgers. I didn't get a chance to try the cocktails, but would love to try them out at some point.
I think I expected a little more from Mary's, but nonetheless I think it's a really unique spot to come for a lunch. The menu isn't expansive, but still aims to cater to most tastes. Service is friendly and quick too, and you definitely get bang for your buck with the food you are served.
This place was really unique, it was loud and all encompassing. So, if you want a new/ exciting dining experience, I would definitely choose Mary’s. Additionally, the food was beyond good. Satisfyingly tasty, convenient, and the menu primarily stuck to a classic and all time favourite- burgers. Needless to say, it was a good experience.
Mary's Burger (4/5): The brioche buns are so fluffy and soft and perfectly buttered, the patty is juicy and bursting full of flavour and the oozing cheese is just to die for. You simply can't go wrong at Mary's, they're possibly the best burgers in town! They're simple but done well.
The chicken wings here also have such a deliciously crispy batter and the chicken is so tender inside. We haven't had a bad bird at Mary's and neither will you.
Absolutely love the atmosphere here and the music but in terms of food, for the price point it wasn't very impressive. Think of fancy maccas and you've got the cheeseburgers here. A little soggy and the chips are alright but nothing too impressive

One of the really cool places in Sydney! A friend that is a local took me here and I would've never found the place on my own even though I've been taken here a couple of times. The vibe is really cool and chilled. A great mushroom burger here that doesn't taste like it's a "healthy veggie" burger!
Struggled to find this place on Saturday evening... Very loud and 'underground', but i guess that's the brand positioning... With all the hype, i needed to try this burger. Overall, very simple product. A little too simple for my liking. The meat was nice, but too thin and the bun was a little soggy. For a burger on the run it's great, but overall the experience was ok...
Difficult to find, Mary’s is one place that those “in the know” frequent. The burgers and selection of alcohol are very good and the atmosphere is a little on the “edgy” side in that it is rather grungy and dark. That said, the classic rock blaring out of the speakers, friendly staff and decent burgers makes it worth the effort.
Well first time to newtown and excited to try this infamous Mary’s burger. You need to keep your focus to find this place, no sign for this bar. Well you step in you will feel that the bar has unique concept, trying the burger and the fried chicken! I tried Mary’s burger and it so yum! Also order the fried chicken , it’s good and delicious chicken, the batter is crispy and salty but not over, meat is juicy! But i taste a little bit of burnt!
Not much to say except WOW!
The chicken was amazing. Every bite was full of flavor, I absolutely loved it. The mash and gravy was so nice however it wasn’t heated all the way through but still delicious. Friendly staff, wall art is amazing. Definitely coming back here.
Good burgers, perfect place for a cheat day with their menu on the wall. Bar itself is lowly lit, not a great opportunity for photos but pretty cool vibe, their walls are covered with graffiti and also the menu displayed on the wall in chalk. Passionate people about their food and drinks. Music is quite loud which I believe adds to the ambience of the joint but don't come here if you're looking for a quiet place to talk.
Had the Mary’s burger and a couple of drinks. Their food is amazing - high quality and delicious. Serve excellent drinks at a reasonable price.
Killer burgers that will haunt you for years to come.
Their special sauce is to die for.
Love the atmosphere! Dark and creepy and intense, just the way I like it.
A very interesting place that should definitely be visited. The Zomato pics definitely don't do it justice. The dimly lit walls are covered with street art and the music is far from your standard pop music, which is great and gives the place a unique dark and cool vibe. We tried the signature Mary's Burger and while it was decent I have to say it is overhyped. The burger is small with not near enough ingredients or flavour to warrant $16. The chips are indistinguishable from McDonalds. The drinks were enjoyable though. Service is fast and servers are friendly
definitly my fave place in sydney. From outside its just like an old building, but when you came the vibe is different, the music is great, love this place so so much.
and the mushroom burgers is the best ♥️♥️
Favourite burger place in town. Small menu, good quality, winning combo. Has an abandoned church vibe with a rock and roll makeover. Love the cheeseburger, the fried chicken is also delicious. The mash and gravy is delicious and buttery. Staff are always friendly. Never had a bad experience here.
too damn good, never disappoints, must visit!! Always bring friends and family here when they come from overseas/interstate, well worth it, yum
No review needed here.... just the fact that I keep coming back again and again and again and again! F*cking awesome, always! From the burgs to the booze to the fried chook, Mary's never disappoints!
What a cool place! My friend took my here and I definitely would not have found it myself. The vibe inside was great, love the graffiti and the burgers were pretty epic. It was quite juicy and tasty. The overall experience was great, although a bit loud, adds to the experience. I will definitely be back and trying other things on the menu and the drinks.
This is definitely one of the best burger joints you can find in Sydney. Mary’s is Newtown’s favourite hotspot as it not only has a lively atmosphere but also their burgers are amazingly good. Fried chicken, burgers and a vast selection of cocktails, Mary’s will keep you entertained. Warning: this place can get quite noisy so be prepared!

Mary's provides you with an impeccable experience that everybody must experience!
If it wasn't for my mate, I wouldn't even know where Mary's was. It is located in a narrow aly way and doesn't have any signs or indication to state that this place even exists. We walked inside a dark-ish hallway and walked into one of my best food experiences so far.
Mary's has a really gheto feel. The decor is very vivid and mainly is just graffiti of different sorts. The waiters put in an effort to blend in with the feel of the place and dress hip too.
We ordered two tap beers and two mushroom burgers. Both, AMAZING! $15 for a burger THAT delicious and chips? YES, please!
I throughly enjoyed every second at Mary's and will be sure to be back with more people!
Best tasting burger I've had full stop. Decent service and the decor is definitely a talking point, bring your grandmother's they'll love it.
Mary's burgers are one of the best I've had! The environment at first is a little intimidating but it is quite cool. The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend!
I've heard great things about this place especially because it is hip. It's different to what I have been to. The rock music was too much for me but when the burgers were served, I had been distracted on the food. The burgers were delicious, could be said that it was one of my all time favourites!
The burgers here are amazing😍, and the atmosphere really cool and unique. For $16 mary burger and fries, I couldn't be happier. The burger was actually kind of small, but the fries ensured a satisfied and full feeling.
It very busy, so having conversations and talking to people means having to shout.
Service was great and fast. Overall, loved the experience.
Can't wait to visit again!
Honestly the best burger I've had so far.
The beef melts in your mouth and the SAUCE is just too good.
I always finish my burg too fast though and wish it could ;)L A S T L O N G E R;)
But the fries make up for it and push me over the edge.
Love the look, sound and feel of the place too.
Gud job 10/10 would bang
Mary's rocks. From the tap beers to the food its overall great. The environment is unique and fun and the staff is super nice. I go here as much as possible and I've never had a bad experience.
Great burgers! Good size- not too nap-inducing large, but not too arrogantly-priced small. Good serving of fries with every burger too.
Bit of a wait to be seated as it's always busy - but this is to be expected with the sudden new trend of not taking bookings.
Music way too loud. Not a place to catch up or talk with friends.
Staff are nice and efficient, know what they're doing.
Decently priced for what you're getting.
I'm not a vegetarian but thought I'd try the mushroom burger as everyone else in my party got Mary's burger. Both were delicious!
Great! Love the atmosphere, great for a little catch up with your friends - not so good for anything intimate as they do have loud, heavy rock music playing loud.
We ordered the Mary burger which comes with chips, tender beef patty on a soft bun which was great!
The food was great!
We ordered the Mary's burger and full chook.
The chook was succulent & piping hot. Even after 15 minutes when it came out, it managed to hold its temperature.
The burger was delicious.
We also ordered a round of bloody Mary's which contains cheese, onion & bacon on top! It's one of the best Bloody Mary's ive ever had! See photo!
We ordered Mary's to our office so I didn't expect the burgers to be fresh and hot, but it didn't ruin my experience.
I love Mary's because I love that American style burger. Simple with a light soft bun, lettuce, tomato, onion and a delicious sauce. It's just a shame that they are really quite expensive for what you get. For me they are tiny burgers, like snack size with a lettuce leaf and one slice of tomato. The vego one also doesn't have much to it with the patty being a mushroom. Knowing that I could go to Maccas for a lot cheaper makes me think twice about getting it.
The chips were golden and I really do love the burgers and enjoy it, it's just the price that is a let down.
The place is loud so if you can't stand loud music, then you may not enjoy your stay.
The restaurant itself is very unique with grafittis all over the place.
We ordered a cheeseburger and a whole bird. The chicken was really good. Dip it in the mash n gravy. The burger was also good especially the bun.
The Double Mary's burger is hands down the best burger I've had. What impresses me even more about this place is how they manage to have amazing fried chicken as well. The atmosphere isn't very family friendly (it's a dark bar with heavy metal usually blasting) and the menu is quite small, but you definitely won't be let down by the food. I think the secret to the Mary's burger would be the sauce (reminiscent of Shake Shack), the cheese and the onion. The rest of the ingredients are very high quality - can't recommend it enough.
A friend recommend Mary’s and told us it was hard to find. Check the photos and you will find it. We had a few beers and burgers. One Mary’s burger and one cheeseburger. Bit came with shoe string fries. At $21 each you may think expensive for a burger. The buns are fresh as is the lettuce and tomato on the Mary’s burger. The meat patty was home made and cooked medium and was juicy not dry. Only thing I didn’t like was the patty was a little too salty. But I’m sure if made fresh each day, it maybe a different taste tomorrow. Well worth the visit.
This place is one of its own kind. Hard to locate as from outside it looks like an abandoned house (video posted). But as you enter, the place turns into a nasty vibe. Full on grungy look with graffiti on every inch of the place. Surprisingly the meat is halal. Had Marys Classic burger with Half Bird. The burger was delicious however fried chicken was okay as it was over fried. All in all, a very good experience.
I have to preface this by saying that I haven't actually eaten in, so I think I've missed at least half of the experience. However, the burgers and fries I've had delivered have been pretty damn good, and when you look at prices of burgers in the area, it's actually fairly reasonable to get a burger AND fries for just over $20. My suggestion would be if you're not keen on the grunginess of a dive bar, then just order takeaway and enjoy the burger for what it is.
We ordered both the marys and mushroom burger - the meat was cooked nicely and bun was so soft, while the mushroom burger was juicy and had a nice meaty texture to the portobello mushroom. They were really busy yet the wait wasn’t long for our food to be served.
Amazing atmosphere. Used to be scared to come in when i was like 14 lol, but as an adult this place is sick!!!! love the menu items (SERIOUSLY DONT SLEEP ON THEIR MASH!!! ITS SOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!) epic music and lighting too. Bathrooms smell a bit funky but if youre bothered by that you are defo in the wrong place lmfao. i want to bring a sharpie next time to put something on the wall lol
staff are cool as hell too. love u guys.
seriously im drooling thinking about the food as im writing this. i want more mash. its so good. id die for it.
Amazing food, lovely beers, creepy but endearing aesthetic.
Had some confusion with some of the staff members - after working through the issues, we were compensated ten fold. Mix ups do happen, it’s what you do afterwards that matters.
The burger sauce is excellent.
Highly recommend.
Black beer on tap was very good, "The Motorcycle." Fries are at its best👌, definitely visiting there again.
