Excellent food from this brand new restaurant. An inspiring blend of Japanese food with Western ideas.
Particular highlights are the grilled scallops, crunchy rice with tuna and spicy chicken. Not to mention the deliciously soft 36-hour sous vide pork wirh pureed carrot and a ginger sauce. For dessert the sesame panacotta was amazing and a bit different.
Friendly staff and we can't wait to see what the chef comes up with next!
Super friendly staff and chef, great degustation experience! Fried sushi with raw tuna is a must try, highly recommended.
Rk San was an extraordinary experience. We had the 7 course degustation which was on special which is highly recommended. The quality of the menu items were top-notch and the service was endearing. The atmosphere was really great too, an intimate setting for a date or nice ambient night out. Highly recommended, thanks Rk San.
True to traditional Japanese taste and respect seafood flavour (and bonus is with a comtemporary fusion twist that works)
The service was exceptional and food was amazing! The best karaage chicken I have ever had!
Fantastic food and great value. Really enjoyed the king fish carpaccio, sous vide pork belly was to die for! Loved the fact it is BYO too!
This place is amazing, and no one knows about it. Sensational fresh food and great service. It's a hiden gem!!!
So incredible, literally one of the best jap's in sydney, clever contemporary and affordable. Don't bother with a hatted restaurant. Just go to RK San
The most amazing food I have had the pleasure of eating. For the price you may think this is just another restaurant, but this restaurant could easily double the price and I would still be happy.
The food here is amazing.
Edamame are a must have.
Food was awesome and costumer service as well. You can have a nice dinner along with japanese wine. Place to be visited...
Awesome food..Esp the cigar was exceptional...never had this before...congratulation!!!!
Quaint restaurant you would easily miss for their plain door and signage. Came twice, the second time for omakase with a friend.
Food presentation and taste was perfect for their extremely reasonably priced menu ($99pp for 9 courses) bonus discount with zomato Pro. Highlight of the menu came first and last (sashimi and the dessert) complete with an ice bowl! Fish was slightly on the smelly side, the grade didnt appear to be the same as the highest class in sashimi restaurants but sufficed in being more premium cuts (could it be because the sashimi bench is close to the sunny bench?). Waitress was very attentive and accommodating on ensuring gluten free options were available for my coeliac friend.
May I recommend the mio sparkling sake- its like a pleasantly ... original soft drink without exaggerated sweetness.
The food was fresh, delicious and very authentic. Everything was so good, my partner and I definitely are coming back again. The service was amazing and the chef even gave us a complimentary dish (which was delicious as well)
This Japanese Restaurant has an extensive menu for you to choose from. We ordered the 20 piece sashimi which was fresh and delicious. The scallops were well seasoned, karaage chicken was hot and juicy, the spider roll was unique and the tofu was yum.
If you are looking to dine at a Japanese restaurant?? With some wine?? Then this is the restaurant to take your plus one!!! Definitely perfect for a date night! Or an anniversary date! They do perfect sashimi and sushi! And their course meals are just perfect! But don’t forget their “Yuki” dessert! This is one dessert you cannot miss! It was so light and fluffy that you will be asking for more once you finished it! Trust me! I’m already craving for it!!! Lastly their “cigar” dish is a must try dish! I have never seen such dish like this before!
A truly great experience by way of friendly staff & efficient service with refined & quality menu at a good price. 😃
The Salmon/Tuna Cigar is a must order dish. The dish is whimsical & fun with awesome presentation. The Cigar with Salmon is amazingly delicious with a crisp spring roll shell, filled with diced salmon, dipped in malto ash & spicy mayo, set in a heavy crystal ashtray, accompanied by a shot of sake. Sophisticated & well thought out. 😀
Maguro Hana, sashimi tuna atop deep fried sushi rice cubes sitting on a blob of spicy mayo, deliciously creative & modern style sushi. 🙂 Really loved the presentation of their dishes, from Sashimi Platter to Makimono sushi rolls, they were all well thought out. I was particularly amazed by the solid ice bowl of the Sashimi Platter, how cool is that! 😲
We booked RK San for NYE as we wanted a casual and enjoyable dinner without a crazy price tag. The booking process was seamless and they were good at accommodating my many requests to increase the size of my booking party. The restaurant is among the strip of many restaurants on Cleveland Street in Surry Hills. It’s in a busy road, so you’ll have to park in the backstreets behind. The restaurant is casual and can probably accommodate about 30 diners. Chef RK San works at the sushi counter at the front of the restaurant and he is so kind and friendly, whilst also being super focused at the job at hand.
Rk San is a gem of a restaurant which opened in 2016 in Surry Hills. If you are looking for very good Japanese food that is that little bit special without breaking the bank account, then Rk San is a must visit.
The food is exquisite: fresh, good quality, creative and impeccable presentation. It’s hard to pick a favourite dish as they were all so good but I did love the Haikkado Scallops (pictured), the sashimi platter (pictured) and the miso eggplant.
The dish that you must order is the salmon carpaccio as it’s cooked with sesame flames right in front of you. A bit of theatrics.
Lastly the service is warm and friendly and they have an extensive drinks/wine list.
Please note we ate as guests of Rk San.

I’ve been here a few times, one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Sydney. The menu is extensive and covers fresh sushi and sashimi to cooked dishes.
You can expect to find all your favourite usual dishes.
My fave were:
Cigar rolls - made to look like a cigar, these filo pastry rolls are filled with sashimi and various accompaniments
Miso eggplant - a classic dish
Assorted sushi rolls
The chef is ex Sokyo, you can tel the venue prices itself on quality sashimi and sushi with the chef slicing the fish fresh and made to order.
A slightly more upmarket Japanese food offering, RK San serves familiar dishes such as Tempura karaage chicken and sushi rolls alongside dishes such as snapper ceviche with tiradito and house made crispy string chips. Kids are catered for with a Mini kids dish featuring maki plate tuna, salmon roll, cucumber and avocado. We particularly enjoyed the 15-piece sashimi platter which came with salmon, tuna, kingfish and snapper.
We live very close to RK San and walked past it often but we haven't noticed that it has replaced the previous previous restaurant Yakiniku Gen since last September! The problem might be because the distinction from the shop front of the two are not that big. We thought it was still the old restaurant but we were happy to find RK San a much better restaurant offering much higher quality food at very reasonable prices.
On first visit my partner and I had the seven course tasting menu. At $55 per person, it was a fantastic value for such fresh, creative and high quality food. One criticism I have about the menu was that the wine selection was not great. The wine list seem to be mostly of the lower quality wine and not very exciting in taste. I tried two of them and did not like them. However, when I asked and I was told that we can do BYO for $6/head and that was what we did.
1. Spicy Miso Soup
- A nice variation but the flavour is a let down.
2/5
2. Sashimi in an ice bowl
Beautifully presented. Very highly quality and fresh fish. We love it.
4/5
3. Tuna with Spicy Mayonnaise on Crispy Sushi Rice Cakes
Tasty but too much mayonnaise aise for my liking. I think the mayo completely masked the taste of the tuna. However my partner loved it. I guess you would too if you like mayonnaise.
3/5
4. Spider Roll - Tempura Softshell Crab Roll with Beetroot Wrap
A wonderful inventive dish. The tempura softshell crab was light and crunchy. It just worked with the beetroot wrap and sushi rice in a perfect harmony. I also like its refined flavours which was not overtaken by mayonnaise like the previous dish.
4/5
5. Chicken Karaage
- A simple dish but not many places can do it well. RK San's version was light in taste and texture. The battle was lightly crisped and the chicken pieces was very soft. They were just about perfect and balanced in flavours. We love the lightness of this dish and it was not at all oily.
I prefer this to Isakaya Fujiyama's KFC (For those who doesn't know it was Kenji's Fried Chicken)! Which was pretty good and one of my favourites.
5/5
6. Crispy Pork Bellies with carrot mash.
I read about this dish before I visited RK San. So I had some expectations. The pork bellies was explained to us cooked for 6 hours. They were very soft and almost melt in our mouth. However I was disappointed by the puff crackers as I much prefer traditional crispy cracklings. The pork bellies were also lack of flavours. While the carrot mash was very nice, the execution of the dish was far from perfect. This was my least favourite dish of the night.
2/5
7. Desert
We deliberately not asking what the desert was and wait for the surprise. It was Berry Flavoured Creme. Not my favourite but I usually do not care for desert. My partner who loves desert thought it did not have much flavours and it was a let down.
2/5
On our second visit, we took two of our friends along. This time we had a la cart menu and shared a few dishes amongst us and enjoyed the food even more.
1. Kingfish Carpaccio - Excellent & fresh. 4/5
2. Agedashi Tofu - Ordinary 2.5/5
3. Pop Corn Prawns - A creative dish with surprising flavours 4/5
4. Steamed Chicken and Pork Dumplings - Fresh tasting dumplings with good flavours but not really special. The pork dumplings surprised us with Middle East spices which was unusual. I prefer the chicken dumplings.
Chicken dumplings 3.5/5
Pork dumplings 3/5
Robata Wagyu Beef "Skuwa" - Grilled Beef Skewers. Really tasty skewers with interesting and wonderful flavours.
I understand that Robata is slow cooked chargrilled cooking method but I could smell or taste the charcoal flavours. However they were still sublime.
5/5
The Robata skewers were so good we ordered more but this time chicken skewers. They were just as scrumptious!
5/5
Throughout the night, we received a wonderful services and two complimentary dishes. The Robata Grilled Edamame, 4/5, and also the Tuna with Spicy Mayonaise on Crispy Sushi 3/5.
The lady who served us was perfect but the young boy was quite inexperienced. However, he was enthusiastic and we can overlook that. Hopefully he would learn fast so he can provide better service.
My partner and I went there for lunch. The food and the service was amazing. We ordered the spicy edumame, king fish carpaccio, new style salmon carpaccio, beef skewers, pork belly, sashimi platter, spider roll, cigar and berry dessert. Every dish had something special that really impressed us. The dish that really stood out for me was the cigar, although we couldn't pick a favourite as all of them were great. The service was attentive but not overwhelming, and the chef even gave us some sake to compliment the meal. Highly recommend this place.
I dont know what to say.. That carrot puree on pork belly! made me feel like fly in the sky.. sooooooo good! The smokey sauce in the combo carpaccio of Snappers and Salmon tastes very special! They do dessert on the day, we tried Mix berry dessert (forgot the name). I have never tried something like it before!!! All new taste for me! Oh yeah and the service was excellent, the waitress explained whats in the dish and paid attention on all the customers. My date took me there and food made me fall in love with him :P
Absolutely amazing food! The chef is the best! I would dine here everyday if I could. Such a gem hidden in surry hills. A must go if you haven't been. Hands down one of the best jap restaurants I have experienced.
This place is a hidden gem! Now open for lunch on weekends also, I could not recommend it enough. Highest quality food and service; it'll soon become one of our regulars.
My girlfriends and I have been exploring new restaurants lately. We are so glad we found YOU, RK San!! You are an absolute BOMBSHELL!
The Executive Chef, Rk Tamang has a wealth of knowledge in delivering a unique fusion cuisine. His passion for food and innovative ideas will give you a WOW factor with no doubt.
Guys, NO JOKES! This is just like heaven
One of our favourite is Cigar
- Sashimi grade dice tuna in a pastry shell, nori and Malto ASh with spicy mayo accompanied with saké shot
Incredible food for a very fair price. Friendly staff who are very flexible. We have been here three time in five days. Highly recommend this place.
Definitely contemporary Japanese. The cigar is a must have, and while confusing at first as to what it is it makes sense when you take your first bite. Filled with tuna or salmon, the outside has a nice crisp texture while the "ash" has a surprisingly tasty umami. The maguro hana is also one to try, and also has quite an interesting texture. Would also recommend the maki tempura roll, was the first sushi with a tempura coating. Gave it a bit of a crunch which was quite refreshing.
Other dishes were quite average, agedashi tofu didn't really have that glutinous shell (was more just like a deep fried tofu), seared salmon roll could've been seared more, kingfish carpaccio needed to be eaten with a bit of soy sauce to counterbalance some of the overdone sourness. Food also came out quite slow, but I guess that is more just the environment of the place. You can see it's just two chefs making everything in a little kitchen. So in that sense quite intimate.
Overall not a bad place to try for their speciality dishes. Just know that they outshine many of the other items on the menu.
Picked the ‘Sashimi Platter, Otoro Nigiri, RK San Tuna Cigar and Soft Shelled Crab Hand roll’ total cost $$69 for two people, booked through theFork.
The cigar is very unique, strong aroma and flavour
Sashimi was very fresh, I believe you can also swap to nigiri for the same price.
Soft shell crab really crispy.
Outstanding! Fresh, tasty and different! We decided to give RK San a go tonight as we’re big fans of Japanese food but don’t usually stray far from our favourite few as most just aren’t that good. After tonight, we have a new favourite on the list!
The food is a modern take on Japanese food and they do it very well! The produce is fresh and the dishes are so good it’s hard to pick a favourite. Ok, we actually ordered a second round of Snapper Ceviche so that’s probably my number 1!
The service is also attentive and friendly, they served one dish at a time which was perfect to enjoy each dish properly.
Do yourself a favour and give these guys a go, we I’ll be back very soon!
This one of the best place for Japanese food. Great hospitality, great food and drink.
We enjoy all the Dish from chef.
Please don’t forget to try signature chef creation “cigar roll with sake”.
Thank you RK san team.
Went on a Tuesday night. Food was great. The seared scallop salad and the kingfish collar were a stand out. Would go back just to have the collar with rice.
Hot sake was yummy 🙂
The squid robata was oversalted, the restaurant was happy to take it back and take it off our bill.
Will come back to try other things on the menu!
