We've been coming to this place for years. Good and satisfying Japanese food. Wide selection of alcohol. Best of all, it's at great prices.
Love this place to bits. Serve the best Agedashi Tofu in Surry Hills (Some say Inner City). Big serving, value for money and extremely friendly staffs. Visited during both lunch and dinner time - absolutely delish!
I absolutely love this place - definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants in Sydney! Their style of cooking is very homey and generous. Their salad is massive and their miso nasu sauce was so good. Would definitely recommend this place if you’re after an affordable but satisfying meal.
After several fine dining extravaganzas at the end of last year, we were happy to return to our local Japanese restaurant and enjoy a no-frills Saturday night dinner. Surviving and thriving despite the light rail construction right on its doorstep, Suzuya is a locals’ favourite for its cheap and cheerful Japanese offering. The menu has changed only slightly over the years and as regulars we almost order the same thing on every visit.
One of my favorite Japanese food in Sydney. This is one of the authentic Japanese restaurant that is owned and operated by Japanese. They also have a very reasonably priced lunch menu, but the abundant servings mean that sometimes you are able to share it with another person and walk out with a completely full belly. Their salmon sushi is one of the best around, the salmon literally melts in your mouth. My favorite combination is sushi (you can ask for an all salmon sushi for $2 extra) and teriyaki beef. Sometimes I get the sushi and tempura combo too. Their food is really delicious and if only I still work around the Surry Hills area, I would go here all the time.
everything was really yummy and prices were affordable! staff were beyond kind and brought us over some entrees when our food took a little long to come out. Cant wait to go again
One of the best Japanese restaurant in Sydney! Food is full of flavour and cheap, the agedashi tofu is so yummy! Cant wait to go back and try other stuff in the menu!
A while ago, I was introduced to this little restaurant by my work colleague, SR. Suzuya Japanese Restaurant is located in a small street in the middle of Surry Hills. Unless you are a local or someone referred you to it, you will most likely never heard about this place. It is now becoming a meeting place if I meet my colleague for lunch around Surry Hills.
One of Surry Hills finest Japanese restaurants. My ultimate go to for Japanese. Dishes are packed full of flavour, mains are large enough to share between two, could easily share between 4 but would suggest ordering another main dish. Sushi sashimi combo good option, karaage yum yum must have kewpie and mustard to dip in. I love the complimentary starter of glass noodle salad and single serve panacotta per customer. Good casual dining, quality food, and accept byo wine.
One of my favourite places in Sydney! Food is just AMAZING! Price is reasonable and affordable. Portion is big! A place for all occasions: dating, gathering with friends or even a quick lunch. Lunch set only $17 and you can have sooo much food! Everything here is tasty! I'll certainly come back here as much as I can, though I don't work nearby anymore.
Update: they don't have the free starters anymore. But it's still good. Now $80 for 2 people is a bit pricey. Will have the $32/pp set dinner next time
Apr17 big portions and delicious Japanese food . Ordered the California roll and the chicken teriyaki. It was clearly too much food for one person 😋. Decor is quite nice as well

One of the best Japanese restaurants in surry hills and most certainly the best value. The restaurant has a great vibe and the owners are very accommodating - be sure to book on weekends as it can get busy. Highly recommended is the sashimi salad - I could not believe the size of this dish and it is definitely meant to share!! Popular starters are gyoza, chicken karage and edamame. The chicken katsu and pork katsu are delicious mains as well as the teriyaki salmon. My partner ordered the udon with tempura and like everything else the serving is generous. I also hear they have great lunch specials. Highly recommend this place and cannot wait to come back.
If authenticity in both cuisine and quality is what you're after, Suzuya has got you covered. We went ordered the $30 set menu for dinner. Simply put, it's the best bang-for-buck, voluminous, authentic Japanese meal you'll get in Sydney. And the quality doesn't suffer. In fact, all the items tasted more refined than most I've tried throughout my years of eating Japanese food. There are a few things I noticed: 1) fish:rice ratio in both sushi rolls and sushi is very generous 2) tempura main retained its crunch, 3) crab-cream croquette was clearly home-made and dense. Finally, the panna cotta cup was a nice, refreshing surprise to end our meal. Check it out.
Really enjoyed this Japanese restaurant. Very generous servings, very fresh, very tasty. Was packed - very popular. We had to wait for our mains for a while - but didn't really mind... Figured it was because it was so popular. Would like to return.
Fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff, and fresh, delicious food with ample portion sizes. Doesn't get much better than this. Can't stop coming back!
Excellent food, great polite staff, generous portions, very affordable and fair priced. A little squeezy inside because it's so popular! Definitely worth your bucket list.
This is one of our favourite restaurants. We have been coming here for years. We followed the owners Ryochi and Susan over from sushi suma.
In fact, when I heard he was opening this restaurant in Devonshire street, I drove by for weeks in anicipation of its opening. This restautant is a bargain gem serving up simple fresh and generous Japanese meals for a reasonable price. Our go to is the sashimi salad and believe me salad is usually the last thing I would consider ordering. This salad is sure to cause some food envy, I have witnessed it on many an occasion. This is a salad for 2, it is literally a mountain of fresh salad including seaweed, carrot, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber topped with a generous varity of sashimi including salmon, tuna and king fish. The salad comes with a sweet tangy dressing and on the side the salad is accompanied with fresh wasabi and a thick creamy Japanese mayo. You can choose to mix the mayo in to the salad to turn it into a deicious japanese slaw or if you are on a heath kick, the salad tastes great just as it is. Suzuya also serves great Katsu(japanese schnitzel) pork and chicken, the lunch special comes with a tasty curry sauce which is a great flavour combination. The teriyaki is also nice, with a choice of salmon, chicken or beef. For a heathy option the sushi and sasimi combination is great value. Other recommendations include gyoza, miso nasu(eggplant served with a sweet miso sauce) chicken karage(Japanese fried chicken). The restraunt also has a variety of Japanese beverages available including beer, sake and umeshu(a sweet plum wine). The restaurant has a modern setting with hospitable and friendly staff. For a quirky side note: check out the bathroom at the back of the restaurant. It is decorated with pictures of Mt Fuji, Japanese actors and there is also a table and 2 chairs. I still haven't quite figured out why the table and chairs are in there, maybe it is for the ladies who go to the bathroom for a chat.
Anyway back to the review. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal at this restaurant and as you can see would definitely recommend a visit. Be sure to book as it can get busy.
I love this place. The staff is always lovely and attentive. The food is nice and good portion size. I can feed my hungry husband without going broke. I love their complimentary pannacotta. I like sushi rolls more than their nigiri sushi though.
We booked a table so we didn't have to wait but the group who arrived just before us was told that the waiting time was an hour.
Go here for lunch almost once a week. Best value for money and food tastes amazing. Portions are huge so be ready to share! Recently they have been very busy so the service is slow. The sashimi is always fresh, place is clean and service is nice. We always get the sashimi salad of Kaiso salad. Delicious!
Love this place! Delicious food, lovely service and well worth the money.
The banquet and sashimi salad is what I usually order and it does not disappoint. Even though it is a bit of a drive for me, I never regret the trip.
Went for lunch, the package for lunch is worthy for the food offered. Portion is huge and the sashimi is uber fresh. Had quite a bit for 3 pax and the bill came under $60 mark.. They also give complimentary miso soup
I am rating 5 stars due to service, food and value for money. The set menu for $29.90 is well worth it. Some of the tastiest raw fish I've had in a while. I really enjoyed the potato croquettes and the salmon sushi / sashimi. Great portion sizes would definitely go back.
Good value and good serving portion, thumbs up! Tried their lunch combo ($15.9?) which includes ageshi (fried tofu in sauce), entree sushi and chicken katsu (Japanese fried chicken), similar to suma sushi, it was delicious and filling, I would also recommend their salad - comes in a huge bowl! Will visit again soon.
Great food great service. Fresh simple tasty Japanese food. The presentation was excellent. Meals came out in a timely manner. Well priced. I will definitely be back.
I am blessed by having a lot of nice food around my office. Suzuya foods are good, generous portion and good value especially if you order the set menu. However, their slow and unattentive service sometimes can be quite off putting. I do hope their services will improve in future.
Their set menu has excellent value and the best thing is that you are allowed to share the set menu. We ordered one set menu ($29.90) and a Kaiso Salad to share. The Kaiso Salad (mixed seaweed salad with Japanese style dressing), $12.8. The salad literally came in a bowl that’s deeper than some vases I have at home.
We also got a side of complimentary edamame – but the generosity didn’t stop here.
Why hello there ! What a gem to find in Surry Hills. First time here. Went on a Sunday night and the seats filled in quickly. complimentary condiments like glass noodles side, edamame beans and pannacotta for dessert so yum, very thoughtful indeed. We ordered 10 dishes amongst the four of us - Soft shell crab, Wagyu pot, Miso Eggplant, Tuna Nigiri (ordered this after our sashimi platter because it was really good quality but $2.50 a piece), Agedashi Tofu, Tempura prawns, Sashimi and sushi platter, California roll, Tuna and avocado roll and Sashimi salad (with real seaweed and not dyed ones yay and bowl is super big portion like triple a normal salad you would order at japanese restuarant). First four/five dishes sit on my favourites list and the rest of the list isnt ordered they are all worthy to try, you cannot go wrong and will go back for more. The menu has many choices but somewhat limited. I wanted to eat Unagi rice which would be really great for this restuarant, but maybe thats my own fault for craving it. They make everything from scratch, so very simple and fresh. for some reason the sushi rolls werent my favourite but nigiri's was good with slight vinegar taste. Each dish was well portioned. Chef was very friendly as we were sitting right next to the kitchen. Include everything and looking at the bill and eating way more than we can... I think we found another favourite restuarant to go to.
Love the Dinner Course. Fantastic dinner course! ! Love the food and the hospitality from the waiters.
Always great food and service and great prices too.. Highly recommend the eggplant with miso sauce...
Fresh, quality food. Amazing quality food, super fresh, yet really cheap. Service was very fast even though it was Saturday night. Will definitely go back!
Chicken katsu is to die for!!!. Value for money and good quality food, always busy around lunch time. Salad comes in the size of a garden bowl.... Love this little cosy place!!!!
Good quality and great value Japanese food!
Want a good deal for lunch? Suzuya is the place to be... for $15 I could not ask for more! -- The Food -- Small glass noodle appetiser -- sesame soy dressed glass noodles Simple yet tasty Agedashi Tofu -- deep fried tofu in a soy bases sauce Fried nicely as the oil was not reused too many times. Sauce was simple but Japanese food is all about simplicity Miso Soup -- nothing out of ordinary Sashimi !! Generous serve of sashimi. Fish was very fresh. Sushi -- if you choose sashimi you don't get sushi and vice versa Of course the sushi is not comparable to some other Japanese restaurants as the rice and sashimi ratio is slightly off ... but I can't complain for a $15 meal! Main was Teriyaki Salmon -- although overcooked but quite nice served with rice What more could I ask for? Glass noodle, miso soup, sashimi/sushi, teriyaki salmon or teriyaki chicken, agedashi tofu and rice for only $15!!! Bargain!!! Come here to enjoy such a good deal and walk around this neighbourhood for a nice c
If you are after decent Japanese, a massive amount of food and value for money – I definitely recommend Suzuya. $18 gets you miso soup, a small tasting of glass noodles, agedashi tofu, entree, main and rice
Best Yet!. Took an interstate friend to Suzuya Surrey Hills based on Urbanspoon review. The rating of 95% does not do this place justice! The food was superb - highly recommend the $29 set menu. Fresh and plentiful in serving. I have a feeling this place is going to be a solid regular for years to come!

What a great find! Happened to be in Surry Hills, chose this place purely on its Urban Spoon rating, and am happy to say it deserves every one of its positive reviews! Got the $29 special - every dish brought out was fresh and delicious - extremely good value, too much food for us to finish but taking the leftovers home was no trouble. Kudos to the chef and owner, I hope the quality, value and service remain at the same high standard when the rest of Sydney discovers this hidden gem!
Excellent service, delicious food. Nice cosy little place with cheerfully friendly staffs. Ordered sashimi salad... very generous portion for the price, definitely a share dish. Quality sashimi slices with fresh julienne veg, yums. Followed by deep fried eggplant, served with a very umamied sauce.
Their tempura udon noodles are cooked perfectly el dente with a clear flavourful soup, my only gripe is that the egg is overcooked. Lastly, the beef teriyaki, portion is once again generous, beef slices are very juicy and served with lots of julienne veg as sides.
When we asked for the bill, they gave us a complimentary pannacotta each as dessert which is really light but tastes great. This is a restaurant that I would not hesitate to come back again and again.
Third time a wonder!. Each time we try something a bit more adventurous and leave just as pleased. The gyoza is some of the best I've had while the katsu chicken is unbeatable. The pieces are big and juicy you'll be satisfied on your first bite.
We always order the wagyu pot and edamame. Last night we tried the sashimi and we were all very satisfied. But I'm not sure if you can take my word for it because it was the first time I had eaten sashimi.
When it comes to pricing, I find it a great place to go with a group of 4-6. More and you would be overcrowding this quaint little restaurant and less and you will struggle to finish such large portions.
Great place! Make a booking or come early otherwise you'll struggle to grab a table.
Friendly staff and delicious food! Don't miss it :-)
Best Japanese in Sydney. We had the $29 menu, too much food for 1 had to take a doggy bag home with the main.
Will definitely go again with a bigger appetite.
Simply superb. That 97% approval rating is neither contrived nor undeserved. Suzuya is a hidden gem and wont be for long. They have the most amazing dishes, hearty generous portions and an amazing chef, along with superb service. I'd go as far as to say that they are the best Japanese restaurant in Sydney at the moment.

Awesome. What I want to know is who didn't like this?? Strange. It is awesome, I go pretty much once a week. The food is fresh, the staff are lovely, welcoming and they always remember their customers. It's the best value for money and special additions at no charge are great. We had a birthday there too and were very well looked after. One of the best Japanese places going around!
Value for money jap, run by same ppl as sushi suma on Cleveland st. Good service and pretty fresh stuff. Great for a casual dinner serving the standard dishes you'd find in any other jap restaurant (but is done well)
If you’re feeling stretched for cash, don’t worry – dining out in Sydney doesn’t have to be wallet-busting experience.
Blimey, it's good. Situated on Devonshire Street next to Katsu Yachiyo, just a short walk from Crown Street in Surry Hills, you’ll find Suzuya Japanese Restaurant (BYO). Don’t de fooled by simple interior, the menu presents a wide range of typical Japanese dishes including sushi, sashimi, tempura and all your regular favorites, large full dishes plates for sharing and I mean large to the point that I had to take a doggy bag home. This is a pretty good choice for a fun, casual, buzzy dinner out.
The greatest thing about Suzuya is the service of the staff; they certainly make you feel like you are eating at someone’s house rather than a restaurant. Suzuya scores fully on the really high standard of service factor - great staff/ impeccable service (from the smiling hostess to the various staff members made it memorable), very receptive to even the smallest of requests, couldn't have asked for more on this front. At one point the waitress came over to say we might have over ordered not realizing the portion size of the food hence the tile Man vs. Food!
For the moment, the crowds have not crashed the party as yet, so if you’re looking for your Japanese fix this week, I urge you to book a table now. Right now I honestly don't believe there is any better place for value for money! I highly recommend it.
Love it!. Sashimi that came with the combination lunch was wonderful, as was the Tempura I ordered with it. Everything was fresh, tempura was crispy, not oily, light battered, generous serves of the tempura prawn, fish etc.. Love the complimentary agedashi tofu.. They serve awesome Japanese beer - Kirin Larger!!!
Will be back soon..
Thank you Suzuya..
Love your work.
Great Place!. Atmosphere is great, good service, good prices and the portions were massive!
Would definitely recommend this place to everyone.
Food is unreal, the service is emaculate, price is very affordable, highly recommend eating at Suzuya, if you love Japanese, great people, gorgeous outlook in Restraunt. Suzuya number1!!!!
Amazing japanese food!. My friend suggested this restaurant the other day and I went with a couple of mates. We ordered the dinner course ($29) and I'm telling you now theres a lot of food! Plus rice, miso soup and agedashi tofu is complimentary, how good is that!! The course is broken down to 3 courses each with a wide variety of choices to choose from. The croquette was especially nice and their teriyaki chicken seasoning sauce is heaven!
Only negative thing i have to say is that the wait was long but the food made up for it :))!
Amazing Japanese food. Great value for money, fresh sashimi, delcious all round! Will be back!
Great experience, friendly staff, warm atmosphere, great value and most importantly delicious food.. Strongly recommend the $29pp dinner set.
We had dinner here last Friday night and were blown away. This has got to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in Sydney. The portions are generous and the price a bargain. We had the $29 set menu from which you can choose options. Excellent all round. I especially loved the tempura. They even gave us a complimentary dessert that was simply delicious. Don't miss it.
Great little place!. Had dinner here last night with a girlfriend and we were impressed! It was very quiet when we arrived at about 7:30 but a few more tables came in after us and the place got a bit more lively. The food was great, loved the comp noodle salad and we had beautiful sashimi, agadashi tofu & tempura. The food was well timed and came out almost as different courses so we had time to enjoy each plate. Good price too! A bottle of wine and our 3 dishes + edamame - $67. Definitely going back to try some teriyaki!
Great food and service! Complimentary cold noodle salad and desert at the end of meal. Would recommend the $29 set diner package with variety of choices, entrees, main etc. My partner and myself each chose the $29 deal and chose different things but shared between the 2 of us, so much food and so delicious! You will not be disappointed
Great new Japanese Restaurant!. Definitely one of the best places for sushi in Surry Hills. It's refreshing to see a genuine Japanese restaurant here (Devonshire). It's price is really reasonable and cheap if you compare them to the sub-par Korean style sushi down the street.
Lunch menu -- $15~ $16 can get you:
- small noodle salad entree
- Agedashi Tofu
- 5 piece nigiri sushi (Tuna, Mackerel, Salmon, Squid)
- 6 piece tuna/salmon thin roll
- bowl of rice
- miso soup
- Beef Teriyaki (May I stress that they serve WAGYU beef!) or
- Chicken/Pork Katsu with salad
The chefs also give generously for the hot mains... I'm a guy, and I need to pack half of the main for takeaway.. So it's definitely great value.
Highly recommended!
New to Surry Hills, lovely fit out. Servings are large and generous. We shared an entree, a salad and three mains and the three of us could not finish. Wagyu hotspot was wonderful and tender.
Great value, the complimentary noodles and agadeshi tofu are a nice touch. Suzuya has a good ambiance with nice simple decor. The food is fresh, tasty and the servings generous. The Sashimi salad is recommended. The sashimi salad is an assortment of seaweeds, cabbage, lettuce and carrot, topped with a variety of fresh sashimi. The salad dressing brings the dish together nicely. I absolutely love the sashimi salad and I am not usually a salad person.
