What I love most about Black Star Pastry are the unique flavour combinations of their cakes that looked like they have been delicately assembled. I particularly enjoyed the Pistachio lemon zen with the strawberry watermelon cake being a close second.
Black Star Pastry, makers of the internationally famed Strawberry Watermelon Cake have reopened in a central location in the CBD Galleries. Whilst their flagship store is in Newtown and they have a cafe style space in Rosebery and a store in St Kilda, Victoria, they’ve also been selling their sweet treats through a little spot in Kinokuniya bookshop in the Galleries. Since this was a small spot, only to be found by venturing up a few levels of the building, the move sees it in a larger space in a prime location on the ground floor of the Galleries (Pitt Street Entrance), enabling it to reach more foot traffic.
Strawberry Watermelon Cake With Rose-Scented Cream • Vanilla Custard Flan 🍰
Black Star Pastry is one of the famous pastry shops in town, known for its 🍉🍰, so please come and try it if you visit Sydney 😅
The cake tastes pretty good, creamy, & not too sweet. And more specifically, the melon layer will melt right in ur mouth when you eat it (•‾⌣‾•)و ̑̑♡

📍 Black Star Pastry - The Galeries, level 2/500 George St, Sydney NSW 2000
Been here a few months ago and its the best strawberry watermelon cake I had! The flavours were well balanced and not too sweet. It was refreshing too for a cake with the watermelon piece.
I will recommend and will come back.
Love the cakes here but it’s pretty pricey. The watermelon cake is refreshing and not overly sweet.
Wife wanted to try the watermelon cake, she has heard of so much when they came to Brisbane for a market.
We were having dinner with friends so she got a large portion. The cake was nice, was expecting something special, tried it once is enough.
I went for strawberry and watermelon cake, as I heard about it alot but unfortunately it was sold out. So I had pashionfruit pastry and raspberry-lychee pastry which was good.!
Fresh and light dessert. Not too sweet, perfect after meal. My wife loves it so much that she ate the watermelon cake for 3 days in a row. A must have when flying to Sydney.
We tried three different cakes today - watermelon cake, black sesame yuzi cake and lemon cake. Watermelon one is the best among these three. The watermelon is very fresh. Each bite could taste the flavor of rose.
Another two is not bad. If they could adjust the sweetness that would be better. The sesame cake is so sweet that I hardly taste the sesame from it. Overall, I still want to go again for the watermelon one.
It's a nice slice of cake, but not mindblowing or anything. Additionally, the portion they gave is so small, I wouldn't pay $9 for it.
Wonderful cakes, especially the Watermelon and the Pistachio. This place is always busy and filled with tourists so be sure to order ahead if you're wanting more than one slice! Limited seating available, but staff are always prompt and friendly.
The slices here are certainly very pricey but the taste is uniquely beautiful especially the watermelon cake. I had cakes from here many times. This time Xihuahua 🐶 bought some for Chinese valentines 七夕. It was smooth and fresh as usual! Service has always been good and fast. Lovely pastry shop!
Tried the dragon cake for the first time and I loved it! It was so spongy and the cream was balanced perfectly with the dragonfruit.
I also got the classic watermelon one and once again was not disappointed at all.
A friend of mine buys their famous cake every time there’s a birthday to celebrate.
This type of cake gives you a fresh feeling because of the watermelon and the fruit on the top. But it’s something that you have to eat in few hours, otherwise the taste and freshness is not the same, while other types of cake are still good the following days if you keep them inside the fridge.
The Famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake!! Fresh, light, and fragrant. Watermelon is very juicy and sweet, with a rose flavoured cream, topped with fresh strawberries and pistachio.
This is perfect for someone who is not that into sweets. However, they are best to eat fresh.
They provide various sizes for this particular cake only! Since this is their signature, prices are abit higher compare to their other products. But definately worth it!
Surprisingly they do wedding cakes too!! Go check their website out for more details if you are looking for something special.
The watermelon cake is all i could ever want in a cake! The freshness of the watermelon and rose water combined with the sweet strawberry jam and the crunch of the pistachios makes this a well-balanced and light dessert which I can eat FOREVER! I tried recreating this beauty many times at home but just cannot get it to be as good! Definitely worth the price in my opinion!!

Watermelon Strawberry is really nice. I think its their signature because they have many stock of the cake. 9$ seems kinda expensive for a slice of cake but trust me its worth it! Should try the cake :)
Yum, refreshing, delicious fruity cakes with lots of interesting layers and textures! Tried the famous strawberry watermelon cake an whilst it was nice, the lychee raspberry cake was much more to my liking! So great that these tasty treats can now be easily accessible in the CBD (for us interstate folk!)
Limited seating area next to Kinokuniya. Cakes are divine , with the watermelon and chiffon being my favourite. Flavours are vibrant without being overwhelming. They come in the best packaging boxes too.
The watermelon cake is really fantastic. And the blackseseme yuzu cake tastes sour in the first and sweet at the end and is very special. 10 minutes queue is worthy. But dine in area is too small and if the cafe can be larger and more cozy it will be greater.
I have only tried their famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake and never tasted any cake like that before!!!! So delicious... can’t wait to try the other varieties like raspberry lynchee
Had a visit of this popular cafe and tried their famous watermelon cake, the cake looks really pretty with the edible flowers and layers of strawberry and watermelon, it tastes very refreshing with well balanced sweetness, and it goes well with the iced latte. They also make really good meat pie, if you like to have some savory options.
So happy to reunite with this lovely strawberry and watermelon cake in Black Star Pastry.
The highlight of this cake are the layers of rose scented cream and watermelon slice. Both ingredients added freshness into the cake, and balancing the sweetness. I enjoyed every bite of this cake 🍉🍓
My fave watermelon cake! Bought it yesterday as a surprise birthday cake for our close friend and it was delighted & fresh when we sliced it and had it after meal. One of the cake that we always love to order when we are in Sydney.
Cute little cafe located next to a book shop. Always buzzing with people. Love their range of cakes. Very tasty. Coffees are also on point. Can get quite busy

BEST for the Watermelon Cake.
So freshh! The combination of fruits like watermelon, strawberries and grapes is really mouthwatering. They also add edible flower petals which make the cake smells really fragrant. And sunflower seeds (i guess) make it a bit crunchy!
Such a lovely place, the watermelon cake is always a popular dish and will always be my favourite, you should also try the quiches they taste really good!!
Such a fantastic pastry shop! Quaint environment with great staff and quick service for how busy it was. When I went lines were very long however I was persistent to wait as I’d heard great things. They did not disappoint! Ofc we tried the ever so famous watermelon cake and it was terrific, can see why that is one of their most popular!
I suggested to my bosses and they really enjoyed it! My boss even bought another one for his cousin!
Suggest doing a take away as their store is so tiny! Watermelon 🍉 cake is refreshing and I love the pistachio and eatable flowers on the top!
Quite unique only can be found in Australia.
Tried with Guorium🧪 one month ago with his parents, they found they are into their cake too!
Always come to this cafe for coffee and cake every time I went to CBD.. now they offer to manage our seats.. which is good!! They can predict how long we’ll wait until we get the seats. And the order would come after.. I have tried all of the cakes.. but the star still Their watermelon cake!!
Honestly I have yet to find a better cake than the famous watermelon strawberry.
For someone who isn’t into cake, this one has made me to learn to love cake in general.
Now, once I start - I can’t stop!
And yes, it is worth the hype!
How beautiful is this masterpiece??
Had to check out what the hype was all about with the watermelon cake... Now, I’m one of those Instagramming, Twitter tweeting, Facebook fans who post their cake pictures everywhere and sing praises of them. Yes, their good. Took away three cakes: watermelon cake, yuzu-black sesame cake and lychee-raspberry cake. Although we took away, the cakes held up (bought and ate about 4 hours apart). The fruits were fresh tasting, lending its sweetness to cut the richness of the cakes. The cakes were not very sweet and had layers of flavour and textures! Love it... Will be back when up in Sydney!
Can’t leave Sydney without trying their strawberry watermelon cake. Not the cheapest slice, but even for a person that doesn’t like watermelon it’s made fairly well with rose pedals on top. Def a must try when in Sydney! Although it always has long line ups, the staff move customers fairly quickly.
Had a trip last week to Sydney, and couldn’t wait to try the famous water melon cake at BlackStar again since the pop up store opened during night noodle market in Melbourne. Tastes of goodness, perfect sweetness, crunchy enough of the watermelon, combined with fragrant of strawberries n flowers on points. Abit pricey for small pieces but its great to try.
Finally had the pleasure to try this famous watermelon cake at a pop up store as part of the Noodle night market. It was a really small piece for $9, the only downside. It had the perfect sweetness and the fragrant rose petals on top was delightful.
Hope it will open shop in Melbourne in the future!!
that watermelon cake is awesome 😍
custard i give 7 because it not to sweet
about the white latte i think i give 6 standard coffee
over all is good
Their best seller - the strawberry watermelon cake - is the most instagrammable cake and is as delicious as it looks! The fruits add a refreshing touch to the soft and moist layers. I can write poetry about this 💗
Friendly and warm corner located inside the Kinokonuya book shop with great positive energy around it. I had a frangipane tart with a dark flavoured mocha while shopping here.
Soooo tasty! I hear of it is famous in instagram so I go there to try one. There are so many different cake here though the waltermelon is a little not fresh. But overall, it is yammy.
I’m a huge fan of the strawberry and watermelon cake as it’s just phenomenal, kind of like a must try here. They blend everything perfectly. Soy latte is average though.
Came all the way to Sydney to eat their famous watermelon cake. Tried the cake 2 years ago and fell in love with it. They came to Melbourne once at the Noodle Night Market in Melb, and that was the first time i tried the cake. I always love the cream and the strawberries! Superb!
I ordered the strawberry watermelon one and some kind of black sesame sponge, the smell of the cake was nice and so fresh. It might be abit queue to buy here but they served pretty fast.
Have tried the famous watermelon cake and was left surprised. It is really worth the money.Comes dressed up with pistachios and rose petals.Definitely going back again to try something more.
At $8 a piece it's rather expensive but it is so worth it! Sweet but refreshing at the same time, the famous Strawberry Watermelon cake balances all flavours with pistachios and rose petals as a garnish. The CBD store can get quite busy with a long line and at times they also run out of the cake so get there early! Also very limited seating area as it is located in the bookstore Kinokuniya.
You can’t leave Sydney without trying the famous ‘Watermelon and strawberry cake’ from @blackstarpastry .
We visited the outlet outside Kinokuniya bookstore and ordered the ‘Dragon cake’ as well. Haha, I let Grace tried some of the Dragon cake and she spat them out; but kept asking for more of the Watermelon and strawberry cake. Her tastebud is as good as me! The star is definitely the strawberry cake and I just found the Dragon Cake to be rather subtle.
5⭐️ for the watermelon cake
3 ⭐️ for Dragon cake

Watermelon cake $8!
So good! not sweet not bland just right.
the watermelon itself so fresh :)
Hard to cut tho especially the watermelon parts! Haha but still👍🏻
Pretty looking cakes which are worth treat. This page was in my bookmark list finally visited this place and tried strawberry watermelon cake. the decoration is great located at the galleries level 2. I will definitely come back here
Finally gotta try the zesty and refreshing watermelon strawberry cake! Love everything about it and will definitely recommend it. We also tried the sesame chiffon cake and latte. Will be back to try the lychee cake. Oh yes, the service was superb!
This was in my bookmarks since I moved to Sydney. Finally visited the place and tried Strawberry Watermelon cake. I was surprised to see fresh watermelon as one of the cake layers. It gave entirely a different taste to the cake and refreshed the palate. The cream layer had a hint of rose flavor and the dried rose petals on top gave an exotic aroma to the cake overall. Loved the concept and look forward to try more flavors they offer.
Gonna miss it in Melbourne. Hope they come back soon to Melbourne as well.
I’ve been to the Black Star Pastry in Carlton, Melbourne, which has now unfortunately closed down, and I have to say this joint in “The Galeries” was much better. They made some of the best cakes I’ve ever tried. I’m definitely going back here for more!
The famous watermelon cake was amazing- the watermelon balanced out the creamy layers- a fresh and yummy outcome. Moreover, the lemon crisp cake had the perfect amount of tanginess to it, yet it was slightly sweet simultaneously. We also tried the dragonfruit cake, which I also could not fault. I usually find dragonfruit quite bland and holding no other qualities than being exotic, however, it was a great match with the rest of the cake. I just loved all three of the cakes we bought!
Unfortunately, there aren't many seat as this place is inside a bookstore, but my friends and I headed over to Hyde Park, which is an under 10 minute walk away. It was a cute little adventure! This place is a must try for all dessert lovers for sure! 😊
Since Black star pastry created another new cake, I decided to stop by and try the new dragonfruit cake and it was really lovely. Refreshing and light, and the different layers of the cake complements well together. The cakes here are expensive for such a small piece but it's okay to have it once in a while.
Omg , really tasty and awesome . The decorations, is great located at the galleries level 2 , if u really wan to eat these watermelon strawberries cake u needed come early to line up if not u will regrets .
Visited Sydney and finally got chance to try this! It was so good!!! (Why don’t they open one in Brisbane?!) waited for 40 minutes and I think it’s totally worth it. Will definitely come back when travel to Sydney again.
Nice calm environment (it's in a bookshop), an excellent English breakfast tea and just about the best pain au raisin I've ever had. An oasis in the city.
Delicious cake for my birthday~Actually I don’t like watermelon very much, but watermelon cake changed my feel for watermelon. It’s pretty great~
My absolute favourite in Sydney. Perfect option for afternoon tea and totally worth the wait! Just the right sugar level with watermelon, strawberries, pistachios etc.
set in Kinokuniya, Black Star Pastry never disappoints 😍 so much loooveeeeeee 💖💗 especially the watermelon cake; i could literally eat the whole cake 😍
I was visiting from India and I went to the shop on my cousin's suggestion. The watermelon cake that I had there was out of the world! It was so beautiful and tasty. Have seen and tasted nothing like it.
I’m always at Black star for the watermelon cake. Absolutely perfect for those who aren’t a fan of cakes that are too sweet or heavy! There aren’t too many seats here so I wouldn’t recommend coming here with a big group unless you want to do a takeaway :)
It had been years since my last visit to Black Star Pastry, and that was to the original Newtown store. I finally decided to go back and try the little shop inside Kinokuniya, and I'm so glad I did! I knew it was good, but forgot just how good... Their quiche is wonderful, perfect pastry with a creamy light egg filling. Sweets are also amazing, as you've probably heard. But instead of going for the ultra insta-famous watermelon cake, I recommend trying some of their other baked goods. For example, their ginger ninga biscuit is the perfect little treat (for gingerbread fans). You really can't go wrong with food here.
It's so delicious! I like it. I'll come back.
It's a hard place to find, too few seats! But the cake was delicious!
It's worth a try! Remember on the second floor!
•Sunshine•lollipops•rainbows• That’s how it felt to finally be here, where all my watermelon cake dreams come true! Having sampled this delectable wonder at the Brisbane night noodle markets last year, being at the source only intensified the love.
The sublime combo of a watermelon slice sandwiched between layers of almond dacquoise, rose scented cream, topped with strawberries, pistachios & pretty rose petals blows my mind with its subtle complexity. Fresh, light & fragrant. I’ll even excuse the little hair I found on top, cos that’s love.
Please open a store in Brissie Black Star, pretty please??! With rose petals on top??!
This place has the best pastries ever. We had a strawberry watermelon cake which was so fresh and delicious. Tried the frangipane tart and the lamb pie with a flat white and a cap. Both equally good. Will try the other pastries next time.
Small yet cozy space in Kinokuniya, perfect for a quick coffee and cake break if you are in the city. The cake tends to run out sometimes even before the closing time.
I've had the watermelon cake countless times, so I thought I'd try something new. The raspberry and lychee cake did not disappoint! Although for $8 a slice, you'd better savour every bite.
All of my friends and I love to use the strawberry watermelon cake for our birthday celebrations. The taste of it is fresh and modest, not too sweet, not too greasy, with a whole piece of watermelon between the layers. So beautiful!
The cakes here are the real deal. So fresh, light, and aromatic. The crunch on the base was a surprising change in texture. If I were around, I would glad to pick up a slice
Easily one of the best cakes I have ever had. I’ve been told to come here many times, but I’ve just never had the chance. Perfectly symmetrical layers make this cake just look amazing, and then when you bite into it it’s something else. 5 stars easy.
Bought the strawberry watermelon cake! The rose scented cream was very nice and I love the aesthetics of the cake, however it was a bit pricey.
The popular watermelon cake is really tastes normal. To be honest, its just looks pretty. That’s it. Not worth 8 dollars
Excellent service and the best cake in the world in my opinion! Love their watermelon cake whether it's this place or the newtown store that I drop by. Beautiful plates and serveware that makes for the instaperfect shot! Did try their new mango cake but the watermelon remains the clear winner! Only downside is the small cafe area means little seating options when it is busy.
Anything you pick from here you can not go wrong. Coffee is excellent, milkshakes are brilliant, did I mention the food. WOW!! Pastries are just like you get in France. Really well priced and excellent service. This place is a must when you are in town.
Finishing off my quest to go to ALL the Black Star Pastries in Sydney, I now come to review the one that started my craze, and the one that I actually frequent the most (when I am in Sydney of course), being the one situated in my favourite bookstore, Kinokuniya in the Galleries of Sydney CBD. After landing in Sydney and checking into our hotel nearby the first thing we knew we had to do was to head down there and stock up on cake for the next few days. Being conveniently lunchtime, the place was packed.
Most delicious cake I’ve ever had. Watermelon Strawberry cake is just phenomenal. My wife had it once at a office party & she had been going on and on about it ever since, yesterday I got to know why! Each layer tastes different & it is tastes best when you have it all together. The appearance makes it look delicious & it also tastes delicious. Please do try it!
Cakes are always consistent no matter which location you buy it from which is great. Service is also pretty good. We always end up gravitating toward the strawberry watermelon as we know it will always deliver. Very fresh tasting, not overly sweet and flavours compliment each other well. I feel like the individual cake portions used to be larger, however, continually shrinking 😞
• The store is hidden further inside from George Street, but also need more noticing from Pitt Street.
• Service is efficient. Staffs are friendly.
• There is a variety of cakes and pastry, but I guess the best seller is the strawberry watermelon cake.
• Honestly, the price for a piece of cake is reasonable as it locates in this area.
• Recommend to visit them early to have more choices of cakes as it seems to be sold pretty fast.
I had this piece of cake takeaway. Personally, it tastes average. Definitely come back to try other pieces.
Very innovative and fresh cakes. Inside The Galleries shopping Center (street level) near Town Hall. The watermelon version is the best.
Three bar stools opposite the shopfront available to drink your coffee and eat your watermelon cake.
Service is very efficient. Friendly staff.
Small cake slice is pricey ($9) but worth trying . Larger versions available to take away for home parties .
Went to The Cannery branch and love the vibe. Industrial warehouses turned into restos and even a small gin distillery. People come here for the strawberry and watermelon cake topped with edible flowers. It’s beautiful! Went to the The Galleries branch too which is a small shop for take out, orders and a small bar to sit at. Will definitely come back for more.
Who doesn’t like their watermelon cakes?
During this CNY, they also have this special macaroon to celebrate special event.
$5 a piece, I set of 3 pieces.
Macaroon flavour was good and also perfect for gift to niece and nephew 😀
they have lots variety of pastries with their signature being their famous strawberry & watermelon cake.
the cake is not too sweet and has an amazing flavour blend of both fruits. definitely can see what the hype is about. 🤩
Got a Chocolate Mirage cake for my birthday.
Ordered online, the pickup process is easy, when you show up they direct you to a separate cake pick up counter located directly opposite of the main store, literally right in front of it.
You tell your name/order number and they check you off on a list which you then sign that you’re picking up the order.
I also bought a cooler bag from them, they put a gel ice pack into the bag to keep the cake cool. They also wrap the cake box in plastic wrap after they open the box and show you the cake.
I think this is great and makes transporting the cake home easier, especially if you have to travel a distance. Keeps the cake fresh.
I think paying a lil extra for the cooler bag is worth it. The handle placement/design makes it so the cake is held upright, it’s shaped specifically for cake boxes. It’s a neat bag that you can reuse.
I couldn’t find many reviews of the Chocolate Mirage cake but wanted to try it.
I’m not a fan of dark chocolate, prefer milk chocolate but I thought that the dark chocolate mousse wasn’t bad, it only had a slight bitter taste that you get with dark chocolate.
It mixed really well with the light/milk chocolate mousse that was also there. The sweetness balanced out the dark chocolate and I think makes the cake palatable to milk chocolate fans and those who don’t like dark chocolate.
I don’t like caramel so the only part of the cake I really didn’t like was the base which was a salted caramel/popcorn layer.
Some people might like this, I simply just separated that layer and just ate the mousse/sponge layers.
The pickup/customer service was great. I didn’t collect the cake at the pick-up time I chose when I ordered. I received a text message later from the store reminding me that the cake was ready to be collected.
I sent a text message back letting them know I was running late and will pick it up in 1 or 2 hours.
They replied that it was no problem.
Thought that was pretty nice of them, didn’t feel rushed to make it to the store.
The CBD branch is on point for online orders, had no issues, they’re doing everything right.
I bought the 6 serving size of the Chocolate Mirage cake… it looks small, especially for the price, the 4 serving size would be tiny I think.
Think 6 would be the minimum size you want to get. For a rich chocolate cake like the Mirage it’s an okay size for a few people.
