Review Mad Spuds Cafe - Sydney

James Lu
The food is fantastic. I was initially sceptical about the inclusion of potatoes in every meal (as someone who doesn’t like change!), but after the first time I ate breakfast here, I was convinced. An unconventional take on conventional cafe dishes. The skin on the potatoes is nice and crisp and the varieties of potatoes offered here are fantastic and make for a nice complement to the dishes they’re included in. The proprietor is a true class act and always good for a conversation. The quality of service, friendliness, and professionalism of the staff all contribute to the overall fantastic dining experience.

Came here with a friend and were quite pleased with our experience. The interior of the place is small but cosy. The food is also pretty tasty and drinks were quite nice also. The service was adequate and food came promptly. The pricing is reasonable for the quality/quantity you receive. I think the only things I would mention is the rusty fans look dodgy as and I hope they never actually turn them on as they’re rusty and look dusty as. The lamb in the salad was also a little tough and dry but it counterbalanced with the rest of the ingredients.

They serve the best juice in Sydney! FRESH AND TASTY! The food is delicious and the quality of service amazing. Loved the ambience and the cafe interiors. Would certainly be a frequent visitor. Easily the best amongst the other cafes around the place.

I am a big fan of Mad cafe. Everything is amazing! Even the chef and kitchen people are so nice! My every weekend issue, many vegetarian options are attractive :) Thanks!
Madeleine Radnan
Man these guys know they spuds! They’re not too many cafes that do brekky potato and these guys take the mash when it comes to it! Super lovely, good portions where you are full but don’t feel bad wasting food and fancy in an unexpected way! Delicious
Joseph Yuen
Nice atmosphere lunch place. Very well plated. Flavours are well balanced and really brings out the natural aromas and textures of potatoes. Fantastic vegetarian options. Highly recommend the potato skin nachos!

Good size for lunch and very reasonable price too. Was quite happy that there are so many choices for gluten free people so it’s a big plus. It’s a pretty small cafe so could get packed during the weekend. The presentation of food is good too

I absolutely love living in Surry Hills due to the cafes, restaurants and bars. Mad Spuds Cafe is a must go to for brunch and lunch. Had the nachos, it was surprisingly good. Minced beef, avocado, sour cream and crispy potato skins. Yum.

Kudos to the Mad Spuds Cafe! With my wonky health, there are a lot of things I can't eat/tolerate right now. The staff at Mad Spud Cafe was very accommodating and happily modify one of their dishes for me. I had a yummy organic yam with smashed avo, tumeric poached chicken, 7-seeds coleslaws, homemade beetroot relish and chilli sauce. It was really delicious and filling! Both my friends also enjoyed their respective meal and fresh juice too. Definitely would go back there again!

Fabulous place to eat. We love to have Sunday Brunch here. The staff & owners couldn't be more helpful and the food is delicious. You should try it at the first opportunity.

Amazing Irish breakfast.. just like home! Great staff and service!

Just amazing food!! Bliss for your taste buds. I don't usually do reviews but this place was just so mind-blowing. I have been twice during my short stay in Sydney (and may yet try for no. 3). Had the Mad Pan Brekkie the other day (asked for GF toast which was great and was actually toasted - haven't had much luck with that out and about) the beans and sausages were amazing and the hash brown was soooo creamy! Absolutely delicious. Second visit I had the Mad Spud Stack, also incredible. I am lost for words. Had the Cleanse My Liver 'n' Kidney cold pressed juice both visits, also amazing, best juice I've had in ages. Do yourself a favor and check them out. Am taking one of their Poached Lemon Chicken salads with me for dinner later :)

The Best breakfast I've had since i got to Sydney (18 months ago) Proper English sausages & bacon. Everything about it was so tasty. Great service and cheap. Can't fault it :)
Sonja Randhawa
The food was awesome as was the green juice with turmeric! Will definitely be coming back when I visit Sydney again. Can you please advise the ingredients of your juice?

What a find! Great food, fantastic service. Thanks Lou and Co. We'll be back

Came here because of the Zomato gold discounts. This cafe was a subjective 4 but sadly an objective 3.

While I loved the ambience of the cafe - especially watching dogs walk by as I sat by the window, I wouldn’t recommend spending the afternoon here because of the constant smell of oil that will inevitably stick to your clothes. While the concept overall was interesting, I was worried about the dryness of potato-heavy dishes which was proved correct upon trying the dishes. 3/5 overall.

Their take on nachos saw the traditional taco chip replaced with potato wedges. These were not defined by the poor mush : crisp ratio of normal wedges, and were quite adequately crispy. Unfortunately, I would have liked the cheese to have been melted as per traditional nachos as the flavors of the cheese did not adequately come out in its un-melted state. The dish while interesting, was a bit dry. 3/5

I also tried the mad spud stack, which combined two different types of potato with halloumi and avocado. Unfortunately again this dish was a bit too dry. The potato by itself lacks flavor and only contributes a mushy or crispy texture. Hence I would have like to see it combined with something more light and creamy, or perhaps even a burrata instead of halloumi to balance out the dryness. A good attempt however. 3/5

Surry Hills is always a good place to find great breakfast or brunch. Nice boss, nice service, really glad that I could have an experience on Irish big breakfast, the blood sausage really got me
Evelyn Chen
The service was good, they offered different kinds of sauces. The place was beautiful with both inside and outside seats. The flat white was nice, nothing to talk about. But I didn’t like the full Irish breakfast. I tried it because of curiosity and found that it was a mistake. The hash browns and fried eggs were good, and all others seemed to get lost. I used to have high expectations for the pork sausage, but turned out nothing. Kind of feel like the tomato sauce was the MVP who saved my breakfast. The most awful one —— where were the baked beans? It’s an Irish breakfast!

I’ve been enjoying the wonderful food at this humble but authentic cafe, just a few doors down from the over-rated and over-priced Cafe 485. Great, healthy food, good service and a relaxed atmosphere, while their signature dish, the Mad Spuds Stack, is to die for. If authenticity means more to you than publicity, then this place is highly recommended!
Kravengerfoodie
Small and intimate cafe with friendly staff. Go early as it may be slow when there crowds as they only have 1 waitress. Food is good especially the Irish big breakfast such a complete meal that could pull through till dinner time. Ntg better than a satisfying breakie like no others.

The lamb burger is a special on board. It’s ok but I’m sure they do much better stuff in-house. Coffee is a meh still have rooms for improvement

Been here before (about 2 years ago) and gave it a 4 but recent visit was underwhelming so now giving it a 3. Nothing wrong with food but also nothing exciting.
Chey_ct
It's a cosy cafe which was surprisingly busy on a rainy Tuesday lunchtime. Love the funky decor. They have quite a big menu considering it's a simple concept and nice to see they have a few vegan options. I've got to say I'm surprised by how many good reviews this place has. Staff are friendly but perhaps I ordered the wrong dish. My vegan beetroom spud to takeaway had good ingredients but was unfortunately quite average in taste. My spud could have been fluffier and the toppings/fillings were I'm sure very healthy but tasted quite bland. The portion is good but at $15, I would say it's a bit steep for a potato.
Healthyfoodlover
I love my beef burger, perfect with the beetroot relish to balance out the taste.
My friends order the chef special , and vegan stack. The staffs are friendly. Coffee was very good too.
Anna
Been here twice now and both times had the vegan stack because it's delicious! Prices are reasonable and there are a few good vegan options on the menu. Smoothies here are nutritious and generous servings. Highly recommend the vegan stack!
Tanya Chinoy
I'm quite surprised that this place has such a good rating on Zomato. The only reason I'm giving it a 2 is because of the service and good coffee. The food is one of the most average I've had. Unseasoned and didn't have much flavour at all. We had the veggie stack and whacko taco. The whacko taco was meant to be Mexican style, the avacado was not guacamole, not even seasoned and the beef tasted like nothing.

Would not recommend this in comparison to all the other options in Surry hills.
Quel
Great cafe, friendly staff & prompt service. I had the eggs benedict with ham & spinach on an English muffin for only $15. The ham was delicious, eggs cooked well & good portion. My partner had the beef burger which he was happy with. Would recommend this cafe.
Nancy
The flavour and texture of the food were perfect. The vegan stack and lentil patty salad were great options for vegans! Cafe was busy but wait staff tried to serve us as quick as they could. The wait for the food was decent considering how busy they were.
Nicholas Tan
I went in just before noon and was warmly welcomed. Opted for the most popular item on the menu (Spud Stack). Great service, good atmosphere and the food was delicious. Would come back.

My favourite haunt for breakfast, brunch, lunch and everything in between. Satisfying and well portioned servings that satiate without being heavy or greasy. The Irish breakfast, mad pan, spuds stack are among my favourite.
Camilla Quavo
The cafe always gives me this 60's artistic vibes. The potato is EVERYTHING, EVERY THING. The hashbrowns are something you can never forget about. I got amazed of how they can craft vegetables like a low key artwork! The owner of the cafe is a very nice gentleman, other staffs are also friendly and helpful.
Dany Khoury
Enjoyed the Vegan stack... the smoothie was good
Great service and very friendly staff.
Definitely planning to come back to try the vegan special for 2.
Expect to pay $20-30 per person

Ambience and service is on point and the tucker is wholesome, hearty and delish. Highly recommend this cafe in the heart of Surry Hills. The owner beams with good humour and enthusiasm and that is evident with his staffs positive attitude

I went here a while back. The food was quite nice, I can't remember the exact name of the dish but it may have been called but it was potato with bacon (I think it had piggy in the name) but it was really good! My friend also ordered one of their salads which was really nice too. The potato is very filling so if you usually don't eat much I recommend sharing with a friend. The staff were also really nice, cheerful and helpful and explained the dishes really well. The store is a little cramped but you can also sit outside. I first sat outside to avoid the tight space in the shop but there were alot of trees and it was quite windy so the leaves and flowers kept blowing into our food and I eventually moved inside.

YUM!!!!
Random visit to this place last year with a friend. Great place
Friendly & polite staff
Quick service
Ask and you shall receive
Nothing is too much for them ☺
Chloe
A small little cafe in the outskirts of Surry Hills, with delicious food and relativiely good service. The seating was a bit uncomfortable, and noisy being so close to a busy road, but overall it was a very nice little place, with great potatoes
Hannah
Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the freshly squeezed juice. We ordered the Mad Spud stack, the Mad Pan Brekkie. Wasn't expecting much but surprisingly the elements of each dish worked really well together. Its definitely become one of my go-to-spots for brunch
Wannabe Foodie
It's refreshing to visit a cafe that celebrates the ultimate vegetable: potatoes. In this one dish, they used potatoes three ways, sweet potato mash, fried potato wedges and potato patty. The juices were nice and fresh. A bit of a down side was that there wasn't anything extra special about the dishes, nothing adding oomph or nothing that would make me say: I must go back.
Neena
Staff were super friendly (especially the man behind the counter) and service was quick! The environment was nice and relaxing. Food came out super fast as well and I was so pleasantly surprised!

I got the Lentil Spud Crunch (vegan) and was over the moon when I found the pattie to be full of potatoes! I thought it would be all beans. The dish was well-portioned and quite possibly the cheapest 'cafe' food I've had (around the city area). I just thought the patties were a little too sour for my liking but I'm just quite picky. Do highly recommend! I'll be back to try your other plant-based options :)

Just a little note: they have a 20c surcharge on card transactions

This cozy place was just amazing. They have potato as a main ingredient in every possible dish. We called out for their signature dishes. Had potato skins with beans cheese and a mango smoothie. Also there we ordered for potato spud. Both the dishes were delicious. Would definitely boost the place again.
Service - 4.5/5
Taste - 4.5/5
Ambience - 4/5
Value For Money - 4/5

Mar17- beef taco skins were pretty good . Apparently it's not very Irish other than the fact that they use potatoes, according to my Irish colleague.
Leon
One of the most overrated cafes around. The coffee is normal and the stack was just a bunch of unrelated fried food stacked together. Forgettable and tasteless.
Global Foodie & Filmy
Beautiful no frills place heavy on high quality food and service which is the trademark of most of the good places in this boutique eating strip. Food was fresh... Flavoursome... And fast service. The main waiter could improve on her English but that is the only suggestion
Mishki
Being a biiiig breakfast and potatoes fan, I absolutely liked the place. One of the best places to have brunch as it is neither too loud nor too quiet. Baked potato skins are must have.
Nicola
Fantastic service and food! Something for everyone, six of us dining with all different tastes and everyone satisfied with their choices 😀. Looking for a good British sausage come here!!

Great little cafe in Surrey Hills. Very Friendly staff and service great. I had the full Irish and have to say it was one of the best full Irish breakfest ive had in Australia since arriving. Very reasonably priced too. Highly recommend this great cafe.
Elliot Shackcloth-Bertinetti
Food amazing!!! Hit the hunger spot and amazing service.

Yummm! This is How to upscale the humble potato

Coffee surprisingly good especially given the quality available in the area.

We only came because it was open on public holiday while others closed and what a piece of happenstance. Happy on the holiday 😃😃😃😃

Lovely little cafe in Surry Hills. It was quiet and pleasant. I had an acai bowl and couldn't have asked for more. It was delicious and fresh. The man that served us was very polite and friendly. Will definitely be going back.

Quiet and warm environment with excellent food and service! The wait was short and the food always turns out to be fresh, hot and delicious. Absolutely a great place to chill on weekend afternoons. 5/5

Fantastic for dietary requirements, food is fresh and creative and coffee is great.
Have experienced good service most visits.
Just want to say thanks to Sunday's staff. My 2 year old who i brought for the first time was almost in tears when he saw the tiny bit of apple on his plate that he didn't touch for a good half hour get scraped into the bin while we sorted the bill. The staff kindly offered him some more - not necessary but greatly appreciated. While a sliver would have sufficed, he got several slices placed in a takeaway container making him happy as Larry. Above and beyond. Thanks!

Definitely won't come again!!!!!waited more than 30mins for my coffee to arrive. The next two tables came after us got their coffee before us. Asked waitress their and she's like' oh I don't know , I'm not the one making coffee! What the!!!! This is the service they are delivering!! Waited 45mins already for my breakfast and nothing comes. Waitress like they have too many take away orders! Well, if you care take away more than the people already in your restaurant then don't offer any seats. Terrible services!

Poor Mad Spuds. Why was I so cruel? So prejudiced? With the uber-cool Four Ate Five right next door, and the inviting Organic Cafe a few doors down, I always thought this humble cafe looked a little down-market. With a specialty of filled baked potatoes, and a cartoon potatoe on the window, I have passed it by for years.

Food : Amazing 😍
Drinks : Great 😁
Service : Freaking Amazing 😍👍🏼

I couldn't fault our experience at Mad Spuds. The waiters were incredibly nice & cute. The wait wasn't long and the food tasted great. We ordered the Boxty, the Spud Stack, Baked Spud with Chilli Con Carne & Grilled Lemon Chicken Salad. The flavours and textures all complemented each other. I ordered the Hearbeet smoothie and that was also really good. The taste if funky but you get used to it. Also not too pricy for a inner city cafe. 5/5 😊
Shirley
Absolutely lovely waitstaff. Very well mannered and the space was not too swishy for a Sunday afternoon. The wait was only about 5 mins. The food was very unique however the tasty level was about a 7/10, so slightly better than average but not spectacular. It was a very welcoming atmosphere with plenty of adorable puppies to admire.
Susan
Mad spud crazy! The food was absolutely amazing followed by incredible service. The food is like no other and who knew potato was so amazing! The Boxty and Mad Spud Stack is a must have!
Mark Chau
Came here one morning for breakfast. Nice scenery, nice and quiet place to enjoy a juice and breakfast. Had a beetroot and almond smoothie, was really delicious! Also has the Irish pancake? This thing was presented really well and the taste delivered!
Helen & Michelle
Cute bustling cafe in the midst of the vibrant Surry Hills. They have nice service and staff, however the waiting time can be quite long - especially during lunch hours. Ordered the Mad Spud Stack ($15) and Potato Nachos ($15) which were pretty average, not anything amazing.
Kittyni
Had the most popular mad spud brekkie. It was fine. Really amazed by the watermelon, berries and mint smoothie tho.
Sprinkles
Perfect little lunch spot in Surry Hills! The potato skins are a must! Had a delicious coffee and even better meal, owner is super lovely. Worth a feed!
Mocca
One of my favourite brunch shop in Sydney. Very crunchy, mashed inside hash browns. One of my favourite is the black and white pudding which enhanced the shop!
Fight The Craving
Cute little cafe, friendly staff and 0% shortage of potatoes. You'll find that you're eating potatoes on dishes you didn't even know needed potatoes until now. Would highly recommend their Mad Spud Stack! Because who doesn't love haloumi and potato cakes?
Black_orange
a modest little cafe with friendly staff and lots of veggie options. the mad spud stack with haloumi, avocado and crispy potato skins is a true favourite. lots of meat too, like little miss piggy (bacon and cheese on a baked spud) and whacko taco (Mexican flavoured mince with avo on a baked spud)
The RnB Diary
I came here a few years ago. They only served breakfast and lunch and decided to launch dinner service. We bought the voucher and came on opening night for dinner. The ambience was warm and cozy. The owner/manager was smily and friendly with prompt services.

In terms of food itself, personally I find it's average. What's funny was each course came out with exactly the same colour garnish. Clearly they were trying hard in the presentation but came across a bit amateurish. The deal was good value for money for 3 ok course but not sure if it's inviting enough to go back.

I believe the restaurant doesn't serve dinner now and is breakfast and lunch only.

Comfortable and welcoming cafe in the heart of surry hills. Perfect for that mixed group with different dietary needs. On our table we ordered a healthy salad, a breakfast stack, a gluten free dish and the Irish breakfast for me 🙌 I would definitely call this place my local cafe - great food, great prices, great service 👌
Tyler Brown
Everything about this cafe is perfect. The service, price and the portion sizes and flavours too.

We were greeted by a really friendly guy (the owner?) and another waitress for lunch last Tuesday. The place was busy, but he still had time to chat a little. S ordered the lamb backstrap salad and I had the lemon poached chicken. These two salads were two of the best we've ever had - and we were glad there was so much of them! I think we were eating solidly for about 20 minutes! The juice we had was good too - a minty lemony thing that was good and cold on a hot Sydney day.

I give this place a solid 5. A 10 if i could!!! The service here is always wonderful and attentive. The lovely gentleman, who i think may own it, has fantastic customer service. I usually get the mad spud stack and my partner; the irish breakfast. It always fills us up and is ALWAYS deelicious!!!! Great location, price is worth it. Cant wait to come again for breaky :-)
Rhys82
One of the few places in a packed Surry Hills market that is worth waiting for. Even if there is a line don't expect to wait longer than 10 min and it is DEFINITELY worth it!!! The staff are all so friendly and the owner Lou is an exception amongst cafe owners. Always remembers people's names and greets everyone with the same smile. The menu is exceptional especially the Mad Spud stack... One of the rare cafes that delivers every time!!! Everything from the coffee to the fruit smoothies is of the finest quality. Highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone I can. Do yourselves a favour and get into Mad Spuds!!!!!!
Lawrence Wisdom
Got the full English breakfast and immediately felt like I was home (that's right, I'm from England!). Didn't realise how much I missed baked beans on a breakfast until y'day...it was great to be reacquainted! Would recommend...especially to homesick Brits!
Simply Starving
Simple, no frills cafe nestled along Crown Street. I'm not a huge fan of British food but if it's what you're after, Mads Spuds has all the best basics! I had the Avo and Tomato on Toast with Poached Eggs and really enjoyed the simplicity of the dish - unfortunately the toast was not toasted but other than that it was delicious and the produce was fresh! The smoothies are the highlight - I ordered the Green Thunder, which was clean and lite, and my friend ordered the Summer Blitz, which was full of flavour and very refreshing. Service is fast and staff are friendly.
Kimberley
Stumbled upon this joint whilst having a wander, I saw a waitress bring out what I can only describe as heaven on a plate, it looked and smelled amazing! So obviously sat down and ordered whatever she had, turned out to be 'the spud stack'. Glorious it was! Pair that with a mixed berry juice and I was loving it. Waitress was lovely and very attentive, the owner is always there chatting with customers and has a knack for remembering names we found out 3 weeks after our first visit. I've ordered the same thing every time I go there but will definitely branch out into other areas of the menu soon I promise myself. Awesome experience I rave about mad spuds to anyone that will listen 10/10!!!

Humble and welcoming cafe amongst the many hipster cafes on Crown St. Good quality big Irish breakfast and perfect coffee. The breakfast stack is also great - have never had white pudding before but will definitely be coming back. Perfect spot to hang between meetings mid week.
GymEatSleep
Busy small place. The "potato stack" dish was quite good, just a bit too dry. Good that there were a couple fresh veggie juices to choose from the menu.
Safwat Hossain
Came here for lunch and had the roast duck salad, which had toasted almonds, apricots and potato spuds skins. The duck was cooked perfectly and the meal overall, tasted delicious. The staff were attentive and the food was delivered quickly. The cafe is very popular, by the number of people the frequent this joint every hour. This place also provides a great vibe and is great for catching up with people. I also had the summer blitz smoothie, which had passionfruit, mixed berries and lemon. This drink was refreshing, yet healthy.
Sharon
I've never been a potato person but this place really changed my opinion. I'love everything we tried but I did think it was little expensive for the size of the dishes but you do get full quite quickly since most of what you're eating is carbs.
Megan Cosgrove
Love this place!!! Staff are always lovely and the spuds are delicious. We try to go once a month. Wacko taco spud is a favorite and they don't mind if you make changes or request different toppings, good GF options for my friend too!
Khana
For a quick breakfast before uni, we ventured to the café central that is Surry Hills to try Mad Spuds Café. The concept of a café centred on potatoes was something that we found intriguing, and we were very curious to see just how the concept was developed and also where all the positive reviews came from.
Race Brunch Repeat
My lasting memory of a talking potato is a support role in Toy Story - the first and worst Pixar-Disney movie.Mad Spuds Cafe does no favours to my irrational fear of animated spuds. The claim is a 'quality, nutritious and healthy' brunch and the solid reviews suggest a no-frills, hip-friendly feed.
Sarah D
Super cosy cafe with great comfort food. My love of potatoes drew me here and it paid off. The cafe uses potatoes in many different (and exciting) ways which was great for a warm brunch.
JCheung
Delicious breakky! Was greeted warmly by the barista as soon as we walked through the door. Staff was friendly and the food was out within reasonable time and tasted delicious. Pretty cheap compared to other Surry hills cafes too. Looking forward to coming back
Peanutbutter&jelly
Yum! We had breakfast here and it was just spot on! After getting over what blood pudding was it was actually pretty tasty. If you're a brekky fanatic definitely come here.
Avocado
Interesting menu but the eggs were over cooked. I had the mad pan which came with poached eggs, the yolk was solid and not funny at all. My friend had asked for scrambled eggs, which looked like an over cooked omelette when it arrived. Coffee taste burnt. Terrible. The service was bad too, drinks were not slow and had to remind them for it a couple of times. Would not recommend.

The best breakfast in Sydney. I would highly recommend trying the "Mad Spud Stack". Just awesome.

Also, they have an amazing selection of smoothies and juices.
Gina
Best Salads! Lamb is a must have!. I work in fitness and activewear and out office is a street down from Mad Spud so it's a salad weekly minumum from these guys!
Their salads are awesome and the service is always great. We pre-order over the phone and they're always accommodating.

Highly recommended!

H. x

Cuisine: spuds, burgers Bake your appetite at the cosy little cafe with the tasty ‘Mad Spud Stack’ featuring crispy potato cake, haloumi, avocado, onion, spud skins, sweet potato and mint yoghurt. Grill with the ‘All Beef Patty’ burger which is slightly bland with the thick brioche bun but balanced well with the aioli sauce and stuffing a few of the skins into it too.

Save your money.. Not the best. It was comparable to Pancakes on the rocks savory foods (if anything, not as good). I ordered the 'Lamb backstrap salad', I couldn't even finish it. The lamb was overcooked and the cous cous was also overcooked and soggy, making it taste like it was sitting out for days and recooked. It was drowned in basic salad leaves. The haloumi was the only thing on this dish that I liked. The other dish I had was the 'Mad spud stack'. It looked quite appetizing. After a few spoon fulls it also became quite unenjoyable, it's as if they just put random elements that didn't go well together and stacked up on a plate to look 'fancy'. It was hard for me to pay for dishes I couldn't even finish. It may just be these dishes, but after my experience I wouldn't go back again.

Loved this place, the English breakfast with black and white pudding tastes just like in the UK! The place does get busy but if you go early you will beat the queues! Great friendly service too!
Sophie
Mad Spuds is a Surry Hills oldtimer - nothing flash, nothing fancy, not overly trendy like its neighbour Four Ate Five, but always a good choice for a hearty inexpensive meal that doesn't let you down.

As a potato lover, I felt overwhelmingly spoiled for choice when I first visited Mad Spuds – potatoes are the common denominator in almost every, single, dish. Baked potato, crispy potato skins, potato cake, potato bread, potato pancake, hash browns… you name it!

#kningjaeats all things potato. This potato joint has been around for a number of years and loved by many. The best is having takeaway available meaning I can enjoy delicious spuds at my desk!

Heaven. I found my ultimate breakfast! its here! I literally cried while I eat. never had this happen to me before. I ordered 'Boxty' and that is it. no word can describe my feeling write now. this is what I call more than excellent.

If you are into potato this place is a must try... I have always loved potatoes. I used to (and still do) say that one day I will open "Zoe's Potato Art Cafe" because nobody seems to serve potato as the honoured main ingredient. In my cafe, I muse, the potato will be the star, the spud will dictate the direction of every dish. I will serve potato mud cakes, potato fried with delicious toppings, boiled, steamed, stuffed, mashed, puree, sautéed, stewed, baked and a 100 other ways that I will invent. I will also import potato from Peru where they have over 3000 varieties. Since I love art and artists, the dream goes that I will invite artists to participate in poetry mic nights and so on.... I was telling a friend this story a year ago. We were both thinking of all the potato dishes we could make if we had a potato cook-off. And he said, "have you been to Mad Spuds?". I hadn't heard of it and so I added the place to my to-go list. I have

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone had a great time celebrating the new year, whatever you did. I spent mine in a more modest way by sleeping and spending new years day at work (but whatever, just means more money for food right??). I still haven’t done my own little reflection of 2014 so bear with me for a bit; I’ll keep it short! I were to take one thing from last year, focus on what matters and what is important to you and be less concerned about what others want you to do – because #YOLO. Took me a few years to figure that out but I think I’ve gotten a little braver on my end to pursue the things I want to do. On a more positive note, 2014 was a super eventful but fulfilling year where I could try and experience a lot of new things. Like travelling with friends and being able to afford my own travel experiences for the first time! And of course, actually having the motivation to continue this food blog and not giving up half way. I hope 2015 will treat all of you well and whatever it has to offer, I hope to be able to contribute to society in some way. Whether it be just as a small gesture of sharing the joy of sharing food with friends and family through my blog. Enough cheese (just kidding, there’s no such thing as ‘enough cheese’), let’s start the year off with a small but mouthwatering food blog post on Mad Spuds Cafe that is guaranteed to fulfill all your potato dreams. Mad Spuds Cafe specialises in using potatoes to make delicious concoctions for their customers to all enjoy. It’s a small little cafe along Crown St in Surry Hills right next to other Surry Hill foo treasures like Fouratefive. There was only the two of us so excuse the lack of food/photos for this post, but I promise another post very soon! Mad Potato Stack – $15.00 We had a very difficult time deciding what to eat because the menu was just so beautiful and potato-filled! So I asked for the most popular dishes and ended up with this good-looking Mad Potato Stack which tasted as sexy as it
The Chronicles Of Hilda
After a big night out prior I was desperately craving a healthy breakfast rather than anything greasy. I opted for poached eggs which in hindsight seems a silly choice at a place all about spuds. I must say I was disappointed with the poached eggs because they weren't beautifully gooey and the bread was a little too toasted for my liking.

After underestimating the hill from Central to Crown Street, we were hungry! Luckily, Mad Spuds was there to save the day! Starting off with a nice strong latte we eagerly perused our menus to subdue the growing belly rumbles. Mad Pan Brekkie ($16) Filled with Boston beans, 2 spiced pork sausages, hash browns, poached eggs and roast sweet onion. Everything was how it should be. Firm beans, juicy sausages, crispy hash browns, sweet onions and a bright yellow yolk. A perfect hearty meal for chilly mornings. Also... #EggPorn Lamb Backstrap ($15) When my friend asked for a salad recommendation, as soon as I saw the word "halloumi", I said "this one". "What's halloumi?" "... We're not friends anymore." It was my first time trying pearl couscous and it almost had a bean-like texture to it. The lamb was well cooked. An overall delicious and filling salad. Yeh, keep smiling Mr Potato Head. You're next...#MadForSpuds While paying for the bill, I noticed comical and PUNny posters that I know readers would appreciate. This review is from a while back, over a month ago actually. It's from the day I decided to visit the GoT exhibition, then retracted that decision as I wasn't willing to endure the 8hr wait. So instead I went out for breakfast by myself for the first time, then to pass time I did some shopping (typical girl yes I am) before catching up with my dear friend who likes to call me "Bunny". All credits go to her for picking this cafe. Be sure to check out Mad Spuds Cafe if you are ever craving hot, flavourful potatoes in the city area. Plus, the manager is super friendly, one of the most attentive, helpful and cheery persons I have ever met.

Anyway, when I first heard about Mad Spuds I was understandably intrigued. Potatoes? In almost every dish? HELL YES. Regrettably I didn't even get snaps of the cute signage or Mr. Potato Heads around the place, but just looking through the menu made the theme pretty obvious. There are a lot of vegan and gluten-free options too, if you're so inclined!

We had the Egg and Bacon Toastie (stack), Mad Pan Brekkie (beans, sausages, hash brown in a pan) and Potato Penny Cake.

If there is one cafe you have to go to in Surrey Hills, it's Mad Spuds Cafe. Simply because the concept of their restaurant stands out. They specialize in serving potato based dishes!
The Chefs Wife
My breakfast favourite was “Mad Spuds Cafe”. They specialise in deliciously topped baked potatoes and their brekkie menu is fantastic too. There I had a whopping breakfast pan fry up. The pan included Boston beans and a chilli sausage, so that was a bit different!

Potatoes are the bomb, because who doesn't love all that starchy goodness? When I read about this place I knew I had to try it. It is a another popular cafe located a little bit away from the main noise of Surry Hills and fortunately it wasn't too busy so we got seated straight away on a Saturday afternoon. Iced Coffee We ordered our drinks to which I opted for an iced coffee and a flat white for him. I quite enjoyed my iced coffee and appreciated that they didn't overdo it with the cream. Flat White Mad Pan Brekkie $16 I decided on the Mad Pan Brekkie mainly because I wanted my food served to me in a frying pan. You have to admit that the pan makes it look very appealing. The combination of everything is perfect. The super crunchy bruschetta was ideal for smothering with the baked beans, not to mention the spicy pork sausages were amazing in flavour and quite juicy. I was actually quite reluctant to share them. The egg was perfectly poached with the yolk oozing out as I broke it ope

I ordered the Mad Spud Stack. It consists the crispy potato cake, halloumi, avocado, roast onion, spud skins, sweet potato and mint yogurt. Trust me, this will be a heavenly meal for the potato lovers. I especially love the spud skins. Crispy and crunchy, accompanied with the soft mashed texture of the potato cake, I finished the whole plate within no seconds. As potatoes contain a lot of carbohydrate, I was full to the brim after a stack.
