Review Sushi Train - Sydney

Trang Le
Sushi train has one of the best varieties of sushi to offer. The sashimi quality is good and the rolls with crunchy prawn/chicken are fresh and hot. However the staff is not very friendly and didn’t portrait a sense of welcoming to customers. Price is higher on average compared to other sushi places.

Ordered through Uber Eats and unfortunately when the food arrived it had a few bugs, which is not acceptable and disgusting. Was very disappointed with the food quality, also I had something similar happened in the Rosebery store, I hope this is not common practice in the business.

Best food and Fresh. Always busy and good service. Good price and food were all good and yummy. Who doesn’t love sushi 😁

Extremely legend! Dine in for curry chicken rice, $15, asked for extra curry sauce. Staff told me need to extra charge $10 I said other shop extra sauce noodles or sauce is $5, The chef said everything expensive, this is Sydney! Legend!

Another great dining experience at this restaurant. Really fresh fish and everything was delicious. The only thing that could have been better was the udon. A bit weak in flavour this time and we find it a little inconsistent compared to other food/dishes.

The outdoor signage mentions trading up until 9pm however when I visited at 8pm the doors were locked and staff mentioned they were closed. Very confusing! Recommend updating your trading hours as I enjoy dining here, just a shame there’s conflicting information.

This is quite a small restaurant, so it's best to get there early if you have a large group. Tip: it's a lot easier to get a spot quickly if you're a single diner :) Not the cheapest sushi train around, but the freshness and taste of each dish show that you get what you pay for.

So many selections of sushi! I was really surprised coming in here and see all the options available. Place was extremely clean. Price is ok for the amount of food. And their jelly is surprisingly tasty. The color looks pretty questionable but tastes amazing! Highly recommended. Would want to come back again!

Such a great place with a huge variety of options to choose from. I loved the grilled salmon, soft shell crab and the scallops. Everything is super fresh and delicious. The staff are friendly too.

I had a really good time here. This sushi train is nestled in the heart of Newtown which is a really trendy suburb bursting with liveliness. The sushi train experience felt so nice and authentic, probably because this is the OG sushi train. Everything tasted really good. Chefs seemed really friendly, chatting away to guests which was fun.

This is a national chain that provides all the reliability you expect from a chain. The train doesn’t have much variety, particular in premium items, so order off the menu. I did that and got some rather cold tuna, although once it warmed up, it was very good. I thought the quality generally was better than Sushi Wow up the road but with similar pricing (plus they serve beer here). It won’t match the top places but it’s a reliable mid-range option for Newtown.
Rachael
Pretty decent sushi train with immediate seating- no need for booking. Rice was a bit cold and clumpy and not amazingly seasoned. Well portioned but didn't feel like a steal. Fresh salmon sushi but dry chicken. Would try the other chains before dismissing as average

Excellent, tasty, and fresh sushi. Friendly and welcoming staff. Located in the heart of Newtown. Would recommend for all lovers of sushi. I will be back for more.

Nice, Fresh and Great Atmosphere

You would never think that there is this amazing Sushi Train Restaurant hidden amongst all those large Thai restaurants.

I was referred to this by my sister in law. When I saw the restaurant sign outside and its location, I thought to myself that no way this would be busy.

When I walked in, WOW, it was full. I was standing with my fiancé near the entry door as there was no room to wait amongst the people waiting.

The atmosphere is terrific. There are about 4 staff always standing at the back and looking around to assist you if you need drinks or something special of the menu. The service is quick and I MEAN quick. I’ve been to sushi train restaurants a fair bit and you always see gaps on the trains. This train did not! There was always sushi and a variety of it also.

Food – I very much enjoyed my meal. Food was delicious and fresh. There is no negativity about it. You can also have takeaway if you do not like to sit amongst a group of people.

Service – Very friendly, very professional and very quick

Price – Prices were very moderate. Most expensive plate from memory was either $5 or $5.50 compare to one that I have been to in Sydney CBD being $7.50

Atmosphere – This place probably fits about 25 – 30 people sitting down and dining at the Train. It is nice and cosy and I VERY much enjoyed the atmosphere. There was couples there, families, friends and even people on their own. This place is suited for everyone and anyone.

Even this restaurant is hidden amongst the large restaurants, when you walk inside, it is very clean and tidy. Very well presented. What I like about this restaurant also is you can see what the Chef is making which is not a big thing being a sushi restaurant however there are also TV’s on the wall showing the different types of sushi and how they are made which was great.

Definitely a place I recommend if you are in Newtown.

Easily in my Top 3 sushi trains in the city. I first came here about 5 years ago and was really impressed then. Since that time it has just continued to improve.
The pictures probably tell a thousand words, but make sure you also try the karaage chicken (missed the pic), it is outstanding. Great ambience with the sushi masters creating their masterpieces right in front of you.
As you can see we over indulged and only just hit $100, so very good value as far as I’m concerned.
It’s official – I have found my new favourite sushi train location in Sydney: Sushi Train, Newtown. I’ve done a number of Sushi Train reviews in the past 6 months including K’s Sushi in Burwood, Sushi Hotaru in Sydney CBD, and Genki Sushi in Sydney CBD.

I had heard good things about the Sushi Train in Newtown for quite some time now so when I found myself in the area recently and looking for a light dinner at 5pm, I naturally went to try it out.

Firstly, you have to let me rave on about the quality of the scallops. The raw scallop nigiri is one of my favourite sushi train dishes and the scallops at Sushi Train Newtown are just divine. They are so fresh, firm, sweet and plump (just look at them below!!!) and honestly, this is the best version of the scallop nigiri I’ve had in Sydney...
For the full review go to imhangry.net/2017/12/07/sushi-train-newtown/

As I've never dined in, but only ordered take out I can not say how well the establishment is as compared to those who have sat in. However, whenever I order take out I am greeted with a big smile from my server and my sushi does not take long at all to arrive.

Good vibe, great ambience, very good customer service for a sushi bar. Variety of plates sometimes very repetitive. The rolls are great and fresh, nigiri and miso and edamame is lovely. Salmon sometimes better than others, the one located In Oxford street in Darlinghurst is better for flavour and variety but it doesn't have the same vibe at this one. What I love about this one, is easy, practical and fun. Is family oriented too, i believe this chain of restaurants is one of the best in Australia. I have tried a lot in here and this one is for me with other one I go regularly the best

Not a great variety but the dishes I did have were fresh and delicious. My favourite was the chicken avocado. I had two serves because it was that good. Udon and rice dishes are more expensive than I thought and the quality doesn't match a more dedicated udon store.

I love sushi train, it's always friendly, pretty cheap and extremely fresh. I had sashimi, salmon and a spicy chicken. It was really good. They were nice and accomodating for all my questions for water, mayonnaise etc.

Sushi Train is probably one of the better sushi bars in Sydney which offers a myriad of aesthetically assembled sushi, nigiri and rolls. Located in Newtown, the Japanese restaurant is popular with students, office workers and residents.

I ordered an assortment of sushi including the cheese chicken, seared prawns, duck, spicy salmon, corn ship, unagi and unagi with tamago. The sushi is properly compressed and rolled but of different shapes and sizes. I would come back again if the salmon is fresh though.
Bigeaterintown
Good vibes and tasty food. And it has a wide range for vegetarian. The waiting time is not bad at all. Will definitely come back when I feel for sushi!
Aoi
This is the real Japanese sushi, best sushi in the town. Excellent service.

The food is always fresh and many options to chose from. Their teriyaki chicken is delicious.

Love it here, wether alone or with company, the staff are always so friendly, welcoming and attentive.
The food is fresh and variable.
And there's enough personal space for comfort.

The sushi train in Newtown is located minutes from the station and is quite busy as I visit on a Wednesday night. . You normally don't expect high quality sashimi from a sushi train but Sushi Train in Newtown will surprise you. The sashimi is thickly cut and taste really fresh. I ordered the mix sashimi plate for $14 (8 pieces) which had salmon, kingfish and tuna sashimi. If you're a Washoku lover member then you can also get a deal. When you order the salmon sashimi (4 pieces for $7) then you get a bonus two pieces. Just show them your free membership from Washoku Lovers.

Don't be put off by the generic name, this is a great little sushi train restaurant.
Have always ordered from the menu and never been disappointed, the head chef is good at his craft (older Japanese chap).
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
The words ‘sushi train’ don’t always fill me with the greatest of confidence. Too often I’ve been burned with boring, lack-lustre offerings. The first clue that this Newtown stalwart (opened in 2004) is different, is a glass cabinet featuring beautiful batons of sashimi-grade fish. The second is a small, hand-drawn menu of Chef’s Recommendations.

There is something both exciting and comical about walking into a restaurant and glimpsing plates and plates of sushi revolving around on a motorised train. With so many sushi trains in Sydney, sometimes it can be hard to find one that sets itself apart from others.

its okay sushi is sushi, the quality is good. but just abit expensive for the amount they give. And the line is too long to wait for what you want, better service can do well... but overall good sushi
Onur Tekin
The quality/freshness of the fish here was great the two times I have visited. Probably amongst the best in terms of Sydney sushi trains. But it is also relatively expensive.

Love it!. I love sushi train newtown. I would say it is overall the best sushi place I have been to in the area. The sushi is always of a high quality and they have a nice selection of new things to try.

My favourite is the tiger prawn roll, salmon avacado, chicken katsu avacado, flame cooked salmon, and recently the duck sushi was a nice addition.

Always friendly and excellent service!

We made a stop at Sushi Train - our favourite sushi chain in Australia. Everything is just soo goood. To prove it to you. Let me show you the total damage the 5 of us (my fam) made.

Clean and competent, staffed by Japanese. Part of the Sushi Train franchise - came here when it opened so everything fresh. The offerings are not particularly adventurous and it isn't a fixed price per dish. However, the servings for what you get are not tiny compared to some of the outrageously bad value you get at other trains. Didn't order anything and swiped a few extra Kewpie mayo sachets for use later. Only issue is that the chairs are pretty close together for when it gets packed. They definitely had the egg salad gunkan so immediate thumbs up from me. Other dishes were fine and was able to dabble with the teriyaki sauce and the mayo to good effect. And they take Amex!

Quick, cheap and good. Very friendly staff and a good place to eat alone. Food is fresh and reasonably priced. Recommended.

Yummy Sushi. We have sushi there at least once a week, it is really nice, fresh, one of the best sushi I have ever had. Thank you guys!

Reliable. Always fresh and tasty and you have a huge selection to choose from. All the staff are lovely and everything is really well priced.

Sushi Train - Newtown. Very clean restaurant; unobtrusive and friendly staff; clean and fresh food Loving the VIP member card and takeaway menu. loving the prawn and avocado rolls and Vegetaria Inari. Can also order party platters and with one day notice - perfect.

Maybe I am becoming a Sushi snob?. Nothing special here with the quality and variety being very basic, almost generic... wont hurry back.
Natalie
Rude staff, talking about me behind my back (but I have good hearing)! Overpriced and not a great range. Much better going to Kai Sushi on the Sydney uni end of king st near the Marlborough hotel!!
Shanice
Sushi for people who don't eat raw fish and anything exotic. Cooked tuna, chicken, mayonnaise... Boring!
Xiao Ming Wu
Definitely not $15 per meal for me!. The sushi is great here made with fresh ingredients at all times! Whenever I drop by here for dinner, it will also be more than $15 because everything just taste so good here!
Newtown Tragic
I get nagged to go to this place. My kids absolutely love this place.
For a franchise sushi train, its great. WAY better than the one in the mall at Broadway.
What I like about this place is the Kewpie Japanese Mayo in sachets that come around on the train (this mayo is da bomb and goes with everything!), and the desserts so at least my 5 year old will eat something while we all enjoy ourselves. We figure if he keeps going there and eating jelly, once day he might try the real food and like it- eventually its bound to happen.
For the rest of us, we always overeat because its pretty good food.

So good! can't wait to go back here :) sushi was delicious and the tiramisu was the best I've had in a while!
Newtown Vampire
Hurray for sushi!. Like most sushi trains this one is best if you go in pairs (or on your own), unless you're lucky enough to score the front booth. Otherwise you're in a line with the rest of the pack which limits conversation with anyone not immediately next to you. But you're there for the food right?

The sushi is really nice, lots to choose from and always fresh. Great vege/vegan options including pumpkin nigiri, eggplant nigiri, seaweed ships and much more. They do a mean fried chicken pieces dish which you can get plain or hot and spicy (I recommend spicy!). They've recently added a pork and vege dumpling which is slightly out of place but super more-ish. With so much variety just don't let your eyes fool you into eating too much or you'll roll home in an inflated ball of sushi regret - and I've been there man...
Go_girl
Food was OK. Certainly not the best Sushi I have eaten. Food was fairly reasonably priced and the portions were of a fair size ( for sushi). I would eat there again but not my first choice for quality, tasty sushi.
Tara Spencer
Very yummy sushi and generous portions. I love sushi trains - they are fun and you never know what you're getting. Some interesting combinations though - I can't imagine 'chicken caesar' being authentic japanese!!!
Dominic
It's a shame that this Sushi Train is so small! Although it's part of a franchise / chain, the servings at this particular location seem to be much larger, and represent great value for money. The service is swift and unobtrusive, and seeing the goods prepared freshly in front of you is also interesting to watch. So far, I haven't tired of visiting this small, simple, but delicious little sushi restaurant!

Great place. Very friendly food great

Best Sushi Train in Sydney?. We've tried others, but this is our favorite so far and we keep coming back! In fact, we even went to another sushi train in the area one night and were disappointed with the selection and prices so we paid-up and then went to Sushi Train to finish our meal!

Warning: it gets very busy at dinner time so come early or later to beat the rush!
