Review Gelato Franco - Sydney

Jenny Qian
Good opening hours and good service. The shop itself is quite small but that doesn’t stop people from coming at all - it was quite busy when we got there and definitely seems like a popular place for the locals! It has a cute, rustic, authentic family vibe and decent prices. There is a relatively large range of flavours, and they also have special flavours that vary daily(?) The lady who was serving was very experienced, patient and careful- she knew about the different textures and softness’ of the different flavours and made sure that the scoops were in an order that would prevent them from falling off. She also made sure that each person got some of the toppings of each flavour!

Nice cosy place in the middle of busy Marrickville. We tried 2 flavours coffee and coconut - both were smooth and quite flavourful. I came exactly on the dot after they opened so not too busy. We sat outside and the environment was quite nice.

Great texture and very smooth. I like that you can get two flavours but a one scoop serving. Heaps of classic italian flavours. I got the panna cotta which was subtle. It was custardy, light but didn’t scream panna cotta. The second flavour was roasted hazelnut, owners were very generous with the nuts and definitely blitzed up real nuts in the gelato base. Will definitely come back to try the other flavours

I've been coming here for many many years and Franco consistently produces the best gelato in Sydney. The quality of ingredients used is evident and the flavours are just so authentic and natural tasting. It's too hard to pick a favourite, they're honestly all so good. It's never sickeningly sweet like a lot of other gelato places. We're always greeted warmly by Franco when he takes a break from the back. Love this family business and I've recommended them to all my mates.

Popular spot. Gelato is delicious but on expensive side. The black sesame and tiramisu has a good combination punch

Cute little place… the ice cream is alright. When asked for a taste, was completely told off that they don’t do that which is really bad considering every order place allows you to taste.

Great little gelateria with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Tried the banana, watermelon, panna cotta and donatella. All very good, creamy and distinct flavours. Favourite was the donatella, really liked the toasted hazelnuts in it. Would have preferred if they could serve in eat-in cups.

Always come here - recommend getting the 1L take home container where you can choose up to 3 flavours. They make the gelato here in house and texture is nice and thick 💪 Personal favourite flavours are pannacotta, vanilla, berry yoghurt, matcha green tea and black sesame 🤞

Just went up to Marrickville Road for dinner and found this place. Excellent coffee and scrumptious gelato. The gentleman serving me even put my two flavours next to each other in the cup rather than on top of each other without me asking. Lemon sorbetto and dark chocolate gelato with a doppio machiatto. Perfect dessert. (They even had cannoli and some little biscotti if you wanted.)

Grazie mille allo staff! I came here today with my Year 10 Italian class just before opening hours. The gentlemen were so kind and let us in early. Despite already being so full from lunch, we all devoured our gelato! Delicious, high quality gelato, and great hospitality. We'll definitely be back!

Grazie to my Italian friend who introduced me to their favourite gelateria! At Gelato Franco, you will be spoilt for choice. Their gelato is fresh, authentic, rich in flavour and truly high quality. They make the best pick me up gift for you or your loved ones! Highly recommend!

Love that we have this place so close to home. A Sunday arvo ritual gelato treat. Friendly staff, reasonably priced and good serving sizes. Warm, family friendly atmosphere. Lots of flavours to choose from. The Panna Cotta is a favorite.

I've been looking for really rich Maccha flavor gelato in Sydney and at last I found it here Other two flavors I tried were also amazing. I will complete all flavors very soon Thank you Galato Franco

We come here #gelatofranco all the way from the north shore..., it's the best gelato., ingredients so taste, great & natural fruits & flavours. We will still venture all the way to Marrickville during winter to get our gelato hit..., oh, just love the strawberry cream ~ thanks Frank & your very friendly staff!
Jennifer Chen
Had the watermelon, mango and chocolate flavour and it was amazing. I've never had a watermelon gelato that actually tastes like real watermelon!
Kathy Pollard
I just love this Gelato Place as they have the best gelato in town
John Huo
Unlike your normal Gelato place, there selection is unique and I've never had flavours like it. Combined with great coffee this place is highly recommended. Frank's a good guy too.

Friendly staff, nice ambience, huge servings and most importantly, delicious gelato! Donatella (rocher) and Straciatella (cookies and cream) are my fav!

The service is great. The Gelato and Sorbets (how do you say it in Italian?) are to die for.
Alan Lau
We've tried many gelato places all over Sydney but this is by far the best, their flavours are natural, but not sweet and the serving sizes are generous. The pistachio flavour is the best!

Authentic Italian gelato

Gelato awful, nuts in gelato were soggy, consistency was off. NOT REAL GELATO I’m from Italy I know! Would not recommend and would never come back
Cara
Cute decor and indoor area.
I found the gelato too icy and granulated for my liking- not really gelato. I’ve had better
MealzxD
Tried their special - roasted greentea/hojicha which was amazing. Strong tea flavour. Pannacotta was mild in flavour however enjoyable nonetheless. Great texture, definitely wouldn’t mind a stop over if i was nearby.

Franco is by far one of the best gelato parlours in Sydney and in my opinion it surpasses the likes of Cow and Moon and Messina. Often, my boyfriend and I would make the half hour trek to Marrickville just for dessert. You’ll find that they stock Italian classics as well as sorbets featuring seasonal and local fresh produce. I always come back for Tiramisu as you get large chunks of well-soaked sponge, making the coffee flavour more rich and prominent. My boyfriend has tried a variety of different flavours with the special Coconut and Pineapple being his favourite. Their Pistachio flavour is another favourite of ours as every bite is loaded with actual pistachio pieces. Choose their two flavours in one scoop for $6. The serving sizes are generous and the texture of their gelato is absolutely addictive. Overall, the staff are friendly but I feel that only the owner takes the time and effort to explain the flavours on special as well as the ingredients that go into each flavour. Sometimes we can’t help but buy a tub to take home too.

Franco’s gelato is not as delicately smooth as some, so it's not even my preferred style, but it was still amazing due to the great flavours - berry yoghurt was really rich and the tiramisu had a wonderful flavour even though it wasn’t as chunky as most. They keep the ice cream rather cold, which is good if you’re taking it away.
Tortuguita Comiendo
Very delicious gelato acids friendly service. I got two scoops with matcha and coffee. I loved both flavours. The flavours came through very well. One of my friends got two scoops with coffee and toblerone. My other friend got the same flavours as me but in a one scoop. It's great that they offer this option as many people want to have more than one flavour but not more gelato.

The only thing that took away from the experience was not having a bathroom available.
THEJUGERNAUTS
Essential Sydney gelato and might be our favourite all time. It’s really great and I feel like if they changed their coffee provider it’d be even better. But for gelato this is as good as it gets in Sydney. Panacotta is a must. Mango if it’s on, is also essential.

Ok, I must admit, this was not my first time here, probably been here at least 6 times or so. And every time I revisited, they did not disappoint. If I have to describe this shop in one word (besides incredible), it would definitely be GENEROSITY. Their scoop is so gigantic that they too believe their one scoop could be sufficient for 2 flavours, they now offer one scoop with 2 flavour choices at $6. For those who’s thinking, “no way one scoop is not enough for me”, well better come hungry if you want to opt for the 2 scoops $7.5 option. Their portion size is no joke. I’ve always share the 2 scoops with 2-3 people after lunch and we’ve always left full and satisfied.

(I'm Italian) Traditional, perfect artisanal Italian gelato, kind and attentive staff, welcoming and unpretentious atmosphere, cosy shop busy with local families and kids enjoying gelato and having fun. Loved it.
Howtosnacc
The most friendly little hole in the wall gelato spot in marrickville, outclassing all other ice cream and gelato places in the neighbouring areas. As a regular customer, I have only received fantastic service. The prices are standard, however their portions are godly, and we are truely unworthy.

The ice cream is decadent, creamy and always fresh. There are flavours that are always available that are surefire crowd favourites (&personal favourites) such as;

•Matcha- earthy and deep matcha flavour
•Watermelon - super refreshingly and the best watermelon gelato available anywhere
• Donatella - the embodiment of ferro rocher ice cream with hazelnut garnish’s
• Panna Cotta - creamy indulgent yet light flavour reminiscent of creme brûlée
• Tiramisu - never have I ever had better, rich coffee
• Raspberry yoghurt - a balanced creamy and tangy morsel

These few are enough to keep you returning back for more, but they also have a healthy rotation of seasonal and Mediterranean inspired feature flavours that are sure to sell out quick. Notable features include: hojica, black seasame(pictures) persimmon, pineapple, orange marmalade, orange bitters, poppy seed cake and more that I’ve forgotten

I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH!!!! 💖
Come again/10
I tried the watermelon sorbet and the matcha gelato. Both flavours tasted lovely..the matcha was nice and strong, the watermelon was refreshing. Lots of different flavours on offer!!
Tastypanda
Great flavours and love the half/half option. Perfect for the indecisive ones among us who only feel like one scoop but can’t decide between two flavours. Great range as well, will definitely be back.

Delicious!! Amazing traditional Italian flavours as well as the favourites ! I love this place and how the tables have flowers in reused Italian Soda bottles - it really adds to the modern Italian feel! The price is so reasonable especially for the mountain of gelato you get ! Have to go back for this delicious homemade gelato.
Xlittlecupcake
First time visiting Franco - tried the watermelon sorbet and Donatella flavours. Watermelon was super refreshing, perfect for summer. I can’t wait to come back and try more flavours !
Margarida Salvado
You know when you avoid passing by a place because you then just HAVE TO go inside and eat?! Gelato Franco is that good! You can actually sense the freshness of the ingredients and the texture of the gelato is amazing. The place and the staff are nice and the price is really reasonable. I loved the banana flavour with the banana bits!!
Crème Brulee Crack
My favourite gelato place on the inner west. This place is beautifully quaint, the perfect place for the end of a date. Cosy, with delicious homemade style biscuits perfect for sharing over tea and some gelato on the side. One of the few gelato places that it's actually a pleasure to eat in.
Rania Sarkis
Amazing flavours to choose from! Wonderful, friendly, and honest staff that are easy to talk to!
A must to visit if your in the mood for gelato.

I have heard many good things about this place and they didn't disappoint. I got a two scoops of the tiramisu and panna cotta while my friend got the pistachio and donatella. They were all very smooth and creamy and the size of the scoops were huge. The standout was the tiramisu, rich but not too rich and had a nice coffee chocolate flavour. I was a bit disappointed that the pistachio didn't have a strong flavour (though it did have quite a lot of real pistachios).
Emma Chik
Had a test taste of tiramisu, coffee and panna cotta. Tiramisu was definitely the standout. It was so creamy and tasty, with a huge chunk of tiramisu in it. Can't go wrong with 2 flavours in one scoop for $5!! Very generous serving too. Didn't have to wait even on a Saturday afternoon. Highly recommend!

Dessert, coffee AND somewhere that stays open late. Just what Marrickville has always needed, finally! This family run business is fantastic. The staff are friendly and helpful, the place is always buzzing with customers and of course the gelato is beautiful. Gelato Franco sticks with the traditional type flavours, some so traditional that they have become hard to find. My personal favourite is the dark chocolate and yogurt combo. However you can't go past the tiramisu!! Smooth and creamy gelato with a rich and flavourful sponge on top.

Hankering for some dessert after dinner, we made a beeline for Gelato Franco and were greeted by a crowd in the small store. Luckily we managed to snag a free table to fit our group. General thoughts are that the gelato had good texture - creamy, smooth and no detectable ice crystals. I quite liked my amarena(?) gelato which had a mild, milky base with sour cherries. The tiramisu, the cookies & cream and the macadamia flavours also got the thumbs up from my friends, though I found the tiramisu too sweet for me. Sadly, the pistachio was disappointing as there wasn't much pistachio flavour. The servings are wonderfully generous especially for dine in. And there's an option to have one scoop with two flavours for a mere 50 cents extra. The staff are patient and encourage you to try the flavours on display.

I've visited this gelateria a few times now and the service has always been so friendly and down-to-earth. You can get an affogato with your choice of any of the gelato although their recommended flavour is the pannacotta. I try the Donatello ($4.50) this time around which is like a hazelnut and chocolate mix. My brother tries the feature flavour Persimmon ($4.50) which is equally as enjoyable. Love the retro decor and free street parking in the area. Whenever in the area it's hard not to drop in for a gelato fix.

A quaint little gelato shop in marrickville, cute antique yet modern styling. They sell sorbet and gelato. I almost went for the passionfruit sorbet that looked amazing, but so did the yoghurt, so I got that. Nice vanilla yoghurt with a berry compote - delicious. They also have some more decadent flavours like tiramisu, hazelnut, cookies and creme etc. Good quality gelato. Like messina, less the lines. You can also get take away tubs and uber eats.

I have been here many times. Wonderful sorbet and generous servings. Exceptional service and we are made to feel very welcome. A great place to go after your meal to finish off a good night.
Sal Eats Sydney
Lovely little gelato place that we found ourselves at after dinner. Had the stracciatella and the donatella which were both delicious. Very large servings too.

Service was great, staff were happy to let us taste test and when we decided to sit down instead of taking our gelato to go staff were lovely enough to bring table water. Loz ended up grabbing a coffee since we felt so welcome.

As we enjoyed our dessert the place stayed relatively busy. Perfect relaxed atmosphere to sit and chat after dinner. Good selection of flavours on offer too so we'll definitely pop in again.

We went for a long walk yesterday. For some reason we walked on the opposite side of the road. This meant that I walked past this gelato place that I have never noticed before.

I went in and got two cones. One tiramisu and the other panna cotta. The tiramisu was definitely the superior flavour. The panna cotta was slightly icy. Despite that it is tasty and I am sure we will be back soon.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
The service is so friendly and the guy serving us definitely liked a chat which is great. He is so helpful with helping you decide on flavours and offered tastings.

Despite all the wonderful choices on offer we settled on a Coffee Gelato in a cone, Panna cotta Gelato and Zabaglione Gelato in a cup, and Raspberry Yoghurt Gelato and Tiramisu Gelato in a cup.

Each had a wonderful flavour and quite intense taste to each. They don't skimp on the real flavours here. There was nothing artificial tasting about any of them and well worth a visit here. You can even decide to have two flavours in the one scoop cup for only slightly more if you decide that two or three scoops is too much and want a variety of flavours.

Generous serving size. Not as many flavours as other gelato shops but what they have are all quite decent. A little bit on the sweet side though.

Outstanding gelato. Pistachio, panacotta, hazelnut, all amazing flavours, seriously good.

So hard to find good pistachio, but they nail it here. Prices reasonable and very generous sizes.

The happy spill of families on the footpath at 9.30pm says it all. Gelato Franco has been welcomed by locals with open arms, finally scoring its own Italian gelateria for these balmy summer evenings. It's good news for Bar Italia gelato fans. Just like Mark Megahey of Ciccone & Sons, gelato maker Franco Riservato left Bar Italia to open his own gelato shop. Gelato Franco is the result.
Chilli Feli
Surprisingly good gelato shop in Marrickville - they've even made it to the top 10 in Sydney list recently! Beware of their large portion sizes. The flavours here are mainly classic Italian - the pistachio was seriously good!
Emma Drater
Seriously the best gelato I've ever eaten in my entire life. Tiramisu is my main weakness. Their coffee is to die for. Service is top notch and lovely.
Monty Freeman
At last Marrickville gets a great, traditional Italian gelato place. A modest selection of cream and fruit based gelato. My favourite is the zabaglione. Also has some seating at the front, and the guys who run it are very friendly.

You simply cannot go to Marrickville and miss this place! I'm so happy they've moved locally! Best and authentic Italian flavours. Made with love.

I'm here like 2-3 times a week it's quite sad. The staff are all so lovely and welcoming. They now do take home tubs 600 ml for $11!
For one scoop it's $4 and they give too much! But I'm not complaining.

My fave is the zabaglioni, banana and tiramisu! Can't go past it. So delicious!
Let's Nomnom
A nice addition to Marrickville area opened by Franco Riservato, ex- Bar Italia. We almost missed this place out as they didn't put any sign outside.
I'd say they offer classic gelato flavour and their tiramisu is a top notch! It was exceptionally smooth indulgence that's light on the palate with generous pieces of cocoa ladyfinger.
