Review Guzman Y Gomez - Newtown - Sydney

Mohammad Kalantari
Not a good experience!!! Visited the GYG - Newtown with my friends and all disappointed with the food. While we ordered regular size burritos, the food portion was ultra small and the taste was not pleasant. Tiny area for dine in. Not recommended!!!
Elaine Chandler
The tacos appear to be shrinking along with the amount of topping. I hardly got any. I checked and made sure I hadn't said no cheese, but I hadn't. I had ordered extra cheese.

Trying something different with my husband 🤗🥰❤️ we love this Enchilada and Salad from Guzman y Gomez 👍👍👍👌👌👌

Ordered a regular burrito and when it appeared it was the size of a mini burrito. I queried it with the staff and they said it was normal size. I’ve never had this issue at Mad Mex or Zambrero.

In my opinion this GYG is the best one in the city. Orders are always on time and sooooo delicious. Nachos are the best! Also, the stuff is friendly and hard working. just want to acknowledge, Jose. So nice and always willing to help with a smile. Keep up the good work guys. 🙂

Generally tasty, but they seem unable to read Uber Eats orders properly. Two times I've ordered items and asked for no guac, and both times they didn't follow that instruction. They'll be lucky to get a third.

I decided to enjoy an enchilada. I’ve been there many time but this time Jose made my experience so much better. That boy gave me recommendations and make my meal more complete! Jose thanks !

Great salads with fresh ingredients and tasty dressing. Good thing that they were not stingy with dressing like other places. Not exaggerate but this is the best salad ive ever tried. I ordered the grilled chicken salad and the chicken was so juicy. They all blended so well with chipotle mayo. Service was friendly when I came in. Will come back again

I got the mild vegetarian burrito bowl without cheese. The girl offered to substitute my cheese with the new vegan mayo for free which was great. The mayo replaced the cheese and tasted great - not too heavy. Huge portion and lots of toppings.
Always Hungry
I won’t talk about the ambience because my issue is with the food here. I don’t know if this is a franchised store, but someone is taking the piss. Have eaten and ordered delivery from this particular store many, many, many times over the years. It used to be great, but over the past (I guess) year or so (maybe more), it’s gone downhill - to the point where you can literally expect to get a burrito 80% filled with plain rice. Skimping on the proteins and extras like guac. Uneven fillings and what was once awesome construction is now a complete mess. 2 out of last 3 orders were so bad they went in the bin. Will never order GYG again. YUCK!

Guzman Y Gomez is always efficient, fast & tasty. The Newtown store is busy but always satisfies. I especially love the nachos. They have some outside seating to enjoy Newtown vibes.
Always Hungry
The place is quite small and not great when with a group of friends. I prefer other gyg places. However, the taste was quite the same - still okay - they need to add flavour onto their chips because it was lacking. My friends also received their food way before mine, so I was sitting there for quite some time watching them eat.

Ate here for lunch and it got pretty packed.
it's one of the smaller outlets I've been to and I can't say that I like sitting too close to people!
Other than that food was good but I had a bit too much onion in my guacamole.
Located on King St. so is easy to get to.

Everytime I have their food, I am satisfied and full! It's a bit messy to eat it though... I like the spicy and chilly food so when I don't know what to eat for lunch and Guzman is there, I am happy to have it.

We went to Parramatta branch and the burrito is full of rice and no meat. Unsatisfied. Overpriced. Would not eat burritos for a while because of how disappointed and terrified i am.

GUZMAN✨

My ultimate to go place to get some mexican food! So yummmyyy! Tried it first in their Newtown stall and fell in love with it right away, it was during spring night and the weather was kind of chilly, and eating these delicious warm & fresh quesadillas was really just amazing.

Their service is pretty fast too, and very flavorful, super LOVE💖💖💖 I also like to keep their hand wipes, becuase its really portable to bring out everywhere.. 😊😊😊

Rate? 4✨

One of the best Guzman's - the toppings here are plentiful and cooked well, and you're meal is well-constructed. The grilled chicken has the desired chargrill flavour and is still tender. The vegetable nachos are a real contender as are truly spectacular. Go no where else.

A satisfying Mexican in Sydney. The spicy grilled chicken here is pretty tasty. But again don't expect American quality burritos even Chipotle is a level above.

My favourite is the burrito bowls with brown rice and guacamole and sour cream! It tends to come around to $13 but its the tastiest and healthiest (well i think so cause i changed the rice to brown) Mexican feasts I've had! Also goes well with the Jarritos drinks. Have also tried their churros and they have also been good.

Its a great fast food plan if you want something quick, easy, tasty and healthy! Love their corn chips too!
MissPiggyEats
I often go here for lunch and have the Barramundi burrito or burrito bowl - I love that fish is on offer as I'm trying to cut down on other meats as I've turned into a bit of a meat-a-saurus. I also like that the burrito's come in two sizes as the regular size ones are pretty big. The burrito bowls are my favourite thing on the menu, probably as they come with a few crunchy corn chips on the side.

Service is good and the food is ready pretty fast.

Got a chicken burrito bowl with some corn chips for dinner. The corn chips was crunchy and tasted perfect. Unlike any other mexican fast food joint, there is no option to customise each and every item of the burrito bowl, but they can still customise if there are preferences. They had only few customisation options by default out of which I had asked for sour cream, hot salsa, brown rice and guacamole as extras on my burrito bowl. After a long time, I got to taste authentic Mexican food. It was scrumptious and I totally loved it!

If I must mention the downside, it was the brown rice. It was definitely not bad, but the rice was a little thicker then I would've liked. Otherwise, it was too good!!

I love the spicy chicken nachos at Guzman Y Gomez! Great portions, fast service and fun beats. Would recommend if you're looking for a cheap, quick bite to eat!
Lunch Pie
Simply delicious food! We got a massive burrito and nachos and quesidillas. Couldn't fault a thing. Friendly and fast service as well. I really rate this place

Grilled soft corn tortilla with melted cheddar cheese, salsa and your choice of filling. There are 7 types of filling to choose from. We choose spicy chicken guerrero which is grilled chicken in Guzman Y Gomez's (GYG) Guerrero marinade with Pico de Gallo and Tomatillo salsa and beef guerreo which is slow roasted beef in GYG's Guerrero marinade with Pico de Gallo salsa.

My first bite would lead to a seven year addiction and ultimately this retrospective blog post as I was hooked. Char-grilled chicken, rice, black beans, onions, coriander and a taste of spice immortalised in the green habanero (or red) sauce, depending on what you order, proper corn tortillas and fresh salsas.

Guzman y Gomez has always been a local favourite for Newtownians. It’s cheap, it’s tasty, and it shuts down a little bit later than most eateries. I had my first taste of their food a while ago in their Kings Cross shop, and it was good. My sister wanted to buy me lunch (thanks, Gladys!) and since we were both craving Mexican food, these two Gs headed to GyG.

While waiting my turn to order, a few thoughts about the place went through my mind - how does a Mexican chain restaurant thrive in Australia when it's not really Aussie food? And should I be expecting substandard quality food like most other fast food joints such as Hungry Jacks? Well, I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Jess
The food at GYG is seriously good and fresh, the service was friendly, efficient and quick (we ate at Newtown and Bondi Junction over the duration of our trip, and didn’t wait more than 4 minutes at either location), and it was genuinely some of the best Mexican either of us have had! Massive winner, need to get this in Melbourne!!!
ShaunLovesRamen
As an American living overseas, I often get Mexican/Tex-Mex food withdrawals. After trying and crying over several 'Mexican' restaurants in Sydney, I found Mad Mex with some friends. And now there is an alternative: Guzman Y Gomez . Guzman Y Gomez have eight outposts: Kings Cross, Bondi Junction, MLC Centre, Australia Square, Crows Nest, Westfield Sydney, Fortitude Valley, and Newtown, where I was yesterday. Don't be scared! Seats are empty because I was there at 11am! GYG is a fresh fast food joint servin

The Burritos here are HUGE, but I had no trouble polishing off my half of this Veggie Burrito ($10.50) despite all the snacks we'd indulged in. The burritos come crammed full of rice, black beans, cheddar cheese and salsa. Guacamole is normally $2 extra, but with the veggie burrito it's included. Score! We washed all of this down with some Mexican soft drink called Jarritos ($4 a bottle). I love the Mandarin flavour, but the Guava was a tad sweet (I'm sweet enough).
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
If (like me) you rushed in to try Guzman y Gomez when they first opened, take my advice and give them another go. They’ve tightened the menu, adjusted the chilli, improved the guacamole (to the best I‘ve tried in Australia) and added alcohol. It’s a cockt
Noodlies
It's fast Mexican food, but, according to Guzman y Gomez (GYG), not as you know it. Sure there's a counter and the food comes out quickly, but GYG would readily point out they use "restaurant quality" ingredients, guacamole are prepared daily in store and their menu is made to order - "you can leave out what you don't want". Oh and they're fully licensed, how could you have a Mexican meal without a margarita or imported mexican beer? Noodlies , Sydney food blog went along to their Newtown branch recently. The decor is spesh too, hip raw brick, communal table, nice subdued tones and black and a predominantly yellow and black corporate look. Walter 's soft shelled chicken tacos looked stunning, the diced tomato looked so arresting! Marinated chicken, black beans, tomato and salsa.. what's not to like? The Steak Guerrero Burritos was delish and easy to eat. It was tightly wrapped, the beef stood out thanks to the spicy chipotle marinade, tomatillo salsa added more flavour and brought toge

A movie night at the Dendy just isn't the same with a stop at Guzman's. I just love their nachos.

Always. Never let's me down.

Reliable and authentic. As one of the first Guzman outlets I've always found their Newtown the best and most reliable particularly given the competition and selection of other food offerings on King St.

To be eating my burrito and have an American next to me comment that he just arrived from Mexico and that the Guzman burritos' were like being back in Mexico, well you can't beat that for authenticity can you!

Love the sauces and jalapenos you can help yourself to.

Twice a week. This is a regular lunch spot for me, always takeaway orders as I find it too loud and cramped inside.
The staff are quick to take your order but can be frustrating with other inefficiencies. But it's not enough to keep me away.
Kat
A+ customer service. I come here a lot these days (don't judge me), and always order a niche item which takes a little longer to prepare. On my last visit I was told that it would be a longer wait than usual - which was fine with me; I was in zero hurry and it's worth waiting for. But staff surprised me with a complimentary serve of guacamole and corn chips while I waited. It was totally unnecessary but I really appreciated their client service! Thanks guys, and see you again soon.

Buritos. Not bad Mexican food for a casual and quick dinner also cheap !

Black beans. Pork. In a burrito. What's not to like.

Authentic, fresh, cheap Mexican. Makes the other Mexican places in Newtown look like a joke. ESPECIALLY Beach Burrito which charges a lot for tasteless, mild, comparatively expensive fare.

The ingredients are fresh, the service is quick, the food is tasty. It's not really a place where you can sit and relax and definitely has a fast food vibe, however as a local Newtownian I've tried my fair share of Mexican here and this is by far the best.

Real Mexican in Australia is still very very hard to find! Burrito's here are very tasty though!! Good spice and guacamole! Excellent lunch spot!
Newtown Tragic
Fresh and healthy. This is a favourite at our place, any time of the week, for takeaway lunch or dinner.
Sitting down is fun too, sorta cantina style.
The margaritas are addictive though, and on a hot summers day its great fun just sitting there sipping watching the crowd stroll by. Prices are too good!
The chicken salad is my fav....so fresh and tasty and doesn't touch the hips which is a plus.
Authentic style and authentic staff.

Cheap and cheerful. An ok lunch menu. Generally I've given up on Mexican food in Aus, but this place is average to ok on the authentic scale of Tex-Mex (but the bar is set low, so don't get too excited).
Dominic Svensson
Real flavour. The closest I've found in Sydney to the rich, marinated-for-a-week flavour that you get everywhere in Mexico. Far better than the pseudo-tex-mex competitors that are popping up everywhere.

Chicken burrito +guacamole +the hottest Tabasco and this heavy little sucker the size and thickness of the knee, is pure heaven to me! Warm and fulfilling there's even beans and rice !
Hungry Jet
Best mexican food in australia. Great mexican fast food!

The food here is delicious and affordable, and is truly mexican/tex-mex. As much hot sauce as you like, free jalapenos and cilantro, good atmosphere.

Must go for lunch or dinner. I recommend Spicy Chicken Guerrero Quesadillas with a side of their awesome guacamole. I always want more after I'm finished!!

Missing the Byron Bay sauces. This place dropped down a notch when they got rid of the Byron Bay (Aussie) sauces and went with some US lame brand.

:(

Speedy Gonzales Guzman Y Gomez. In Newtown and in need of a quick meal before a trip to the Dendy theatre? Or...is it late at night, and you are keen for a little food to take the edge off...accompanied by a tequila shot, of course. (To keep the edge on!)
Look no further than Guzman Y Gomez.
This Mexican food chain, with a bustling outlet in Newtown, dishes up Burritos, Quesadillas, Tacos and other Mexican fare with a twist. The food is reminiscent of Oaxaca market food-fresh, tasty and not drowned in cheese!
Take a seat at the communal wooden benches and enjoy your Nachos with a Mexican beer or a margarita. Or grab your Guzman Y Gomez and gobble it on the go!

Best real mexican tacos around
OZ
Too much rice and not much chicken in the Burrito
Carolineshungry
Healthy Mexican, acceptable prices, good guacamole, and great complimentary accompaniaments such as jalapenos and smoky chilli relishes for those that like it extra hot. Great to stop in for a satisfying, quick, fresh feed before a movie at dendy a few doors down. Spice chicken guerrera bowls are great for those who can't eat flour tortillas.
Jane Birkin
Super fast. Love this place, it's hard to find anywhere decent to eat in Newtown but this place is great for a quick, cheap meal before a movie at dendy.
Gerardo Navarrete
Close Enough!!. Being Mexican with few choices I can say the tacos here are the closet I've had to the real thing. The Pork ones are similar to Tinga(Pork meat in sauce). Just to let evryone know hard Tacos are not mexican!!!!!
