We never tried Polish food before , but the food was surprisingly tasty and the portion size was good as well! Dine in experience was 💯 . The boss has great sense of humour and showed his generous hospitality! We would definitely recommend!

Absolutely delicious. Great service- some of the best or the best Polish food I had in Australia. Everything tasted just like it should, flavours were spot on. Pierogi- dumplings were fantastic, so was salad the the goulash. 100% worth trying!

Rabbit was delicious, the creamy sauce was heavy but complemented the tender meat and mashed potato really well. The beef pierogi were the absolute best - definitely coming back again for those! The ‘Polish mix’ cake was also delicious and the atmosphere/setup is so cute and full of character and culture.

We went in a group of 8 and most of us had never tried Polish food before. We tried all 6 varieties of pierogi on offer topped with bacon, fried onion and sour cream as well as some Polish beers and apple pie for dessert. Everything was excellent including the service and lovely decor. I would be happy to recommend Alchemy to anyone and I'll likely be back for some apple pie and coffee. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

A terrific little place filled with atmosphere and the spirit of a forgotten age where European grandparents would fill young Australian born offspring with delights from the old country. The food, the beer, the spirits ....all amazing in their taste, presentation and heritage. A great place with genuine old world charm.

Delicious food, served with lashings of polish hospitality. We started with the fried potato pancakes with caviar, then a mix of dumplings (pork and apricot was a standout), golonka (pork shank) and golabek (cabbage rolls). All washed down with a range of polish vodkas and cocktails. Could not rave enough about it while we rolled ourselves home!!

The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the duck and apricot pierogi to share, the potato pancake w pork goulash, goulash soup and something else. The atmosphere and service is welcoming and efficient. They also have a really nice selection of teas that go nicely with the food.

Some of the best Polish cuisine I've tasted in Australia. It was delightful to experience the home-style cooking of my parents and grandparents in a homely restaurant setting. I was impressed by the array of Polish specialties available, including a rich selection of pierogi (dumplings) and desserts. For lunch, the herring starter paired with a shot of Belvedere was faultless, and the gołąbki (cabbage rolls) and mizeria (cucumber salad) were equally delectable. I came back for dinner and tried the golonka (ham hock) which was cooked perfectly. Many thanks to the owner, chef, and staff for their great service and high standards. I’m looking forward to my next visit!

My fav place in the word the Russian salad and a duck in a oranges are the must ! The best hospitality and the “medicine” to cure your worries go Yanush and al the best!

Incredible food, the most amazing pierogi I have ever eaten, even better than in Krakow! Wonderful, warm service; delicious beer (and 'medicine'!) Highly recommend. The best dinner out I've had in a very long time! Dziękuję!

I don’t know how I’ve lived in Surry Hills for over seven years with this place around the corner and I’ve only just discovered it now. Hands down one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten with even better hospitality.

There's not many cosy family European Restaurants left anymore... luckily this place is still going strong:)! ! First time i came here i devoured 2 slices of applie pie with ice cream and some vodka tea standard dessert for a wensday evening :D!! Second time i brang the family. Any new Restaurant i go to or regular one i love trying the different dishes thry have to offer.. like I'm not going to a Polish Restaurant for garlic prawns .. im going for the Beetroot soup with Mushroon Ravioli :D lol!!! Sister got the garlic prawns ;) and my mum got the potato pancake with salmon & dad some kind of red bean salad, perfect starters :D!! The man owner of the Polish restaurant is always so fun to talk to as with all the waitresses there aswell :)!! His wife is the one in the Kitchen cooking up all these Amazing meals :D!!! My mum was a Chef in Sweden before we came to Australia & loves old school flavours, so she was heaps exstatic when she saw Rabbit on the menu haha.. bit different for me to see though. I got the simple yet delicous Pork Schnitzel with Mash, dad got the steak and my sister got the Golabki which was Cabbage rolls filled with Pork Mince :D. Dessert naturally i got the Apple pie, mum caramel cake & dad cream & puff pastry :D Fantastic dinner night with the family in the city :D!!! No complaints for this place :), easy 5 stars cause the food is delicous, its super cosy and I'm craving to go back to try the rest of the menu :D!!

We went there for a dinner and we were so impressed with the food and friendly atmosphere that we had to come back after two day for lunch! Absolutely love the food and service. Could not recommend it enough. We wish we lived in Sydney so we would come there very often! Must try

We went for a breakfast very late and they were more than accommodating for us. Maybe the best breakfast in Sydney, the quality of the food amazing and perfectly cooked. Really nice staff and good ambience. We will definitely come back for the dumplings.

Lovely dinner for a winters night. The host was very welcoming and friendly and gave us some suggestions for our first visit to Alchemy Polish. He suggested a mixed Polish dumpling plate for entree and these were a great way to start our meal. For mains I chose the goose which was just delicious and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the Osso bucco. A side of polish sauerkraut was a tasty complement. The meals were delicious and hearty and we were too full to try a dessert but the selection looked good. We look forward to returning to try some of the other dishes on the menu. It was a lovely night!

Excellent service, delicious Polish food that anyone can enjoy... desserts to die for ...

I love this restusrantee, I've been coming here for years and would recommend it to everyone, the food is fantastic and the service is 10/10

Best fried dumplings in the world! The owner gives you a warm and beautiful personalised attention each time <3

My partner and I went there for dinner tonight. Not only great food but the service was excellent, the owner was friendly and attentive to his customers

Great food warming traditional place, we waited almost 90 minutes for our main course so we're slightly upset. Nice people and good value!

Outstanding. Go here immediately. 500ml Polish beer. Lovely wine. Ambience superb. Great music. Staff and owner are amazing. Yay!

Great food, quality stuff that you won't see much here with good flavours - more flavour than I was expecting. The duck and apricot dumplings were particularly tasty. We got a few small dishes (dumplings, cabbage roll and Russian salad) and they might have been a bit small for the price - we were satisfied but it's not like the German or Czech restaurants where, regardless of quality, you'll get a huge meal.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
(4.5 stars)
When you visit Alchemy Polish Café Restaurant, the Polish Pickles ($6.50) are your must-have meal accompaniment. “They’re made by my wife, who has half of a heart,” owner Janusz Pawlak explains, eyeing our expressions through a drawn-out dramatic pause, then adding, “because the other half is mine.” Along with the plate of crunchy cucumber pickles, Pawlak’s warmth and his comedic delivery of well-honed one-liners - like “missing you already” as you walk out the door - are a big part of the attraction here. Then there are the Polish dumplings – pierogi – which are next level amazing, whatever the flavour you happen to choose. Pawlak’s favourite are the buckwheat kasha made with toasted buckwheat and pork fat. We split six Pierogi ($18.50) between us, pitting the buckwheat against sauerkraut and mushrooms, which have an interior of...

Eating at Alchemy is like eating at the home of a Polish family. It’s traditional Polish food cooked with love. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious and the service is warm and welcoming. #alchemy

Alchemy has been around for yonks in Surry Hills. I’ve had another brunch here and had perogies for dinner one time (Yum. Heavy but yum). A Sunday after the dawning of a new year and man, was Surry Hills ever busy. We wandered down a little further towards Cleveland Street, and Alchemy was pleasantly quiet...

Our review this week came from a Polish restaurant in Surry Hills, Sydney, called Alchemy Polish Cafe Restaurant.I’m not quite sure why they decide to combine the word cafe and restaurant. This is only our second review of Polish cuisine. The cafe/restaurant is located in a busy food precinct. When you went into the restaurant you would feel like entering a traditional European home… but a very busy one!
I must say we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the dishes at Alchemy Polish Cafe Restaurant. The food was great and the people there was warm and friendly.

Nice cute little cafe restaurant. Enjoyed the special of the day which was the duck dumpling and cranberry sauce, (tasted great!) the speed lamb (very soft and succulent but a bit watered down in flavour) and also the pork roulade (great!).

Byliśmy w Alchemy w listopadzie 2016r. w czasie naszego niestety zbyt krótkiego pobytu w Sydney. Szkoda że znaleźliśmy to miejsce na kilka dni przed powrotem do Polski. Bylibyśmy tam częściej, ale zabrakło czasu. Pan Janusz i jego przemiła żona serwują naprawdę dobre polskie jedzenie. Pyszne roladki, pierogi, zrazy. Do tego słodziutkie aromatyczne nalewki. Jabłecznik jak w domu. Atmosfera bardzo miła. Można posiedzieć, pogadać i posłuchać starych polskich przebojów. Jeśli tylko będziemy znowu w Sydney na pewno tam wrócimy!
Serdecznie pozdrawiamy p. Janusza i p. Helenę.
Agnieszka, Jacek i Oriana

The food in here is great! very traditional and well priced. Big portions and will definitely make u feel full after eating.. Went on a weekday, it's not busy at all so you will have a good service i suppose... Recommended

Well now I know why Polish food hasn't made it to the mainstream.. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's a problem with the food here, I'm sure the chef followed the recipe and it's an age old one at that, but I don't think I like polish food.
The place is run by a lovely old polish couple, really friendly, great service, that was a plus.

I tried the signature dish, the dumplings (got the 6 variety pack ) - it was a bit heavy with oil from the frying but the real problem was it was so bland, no flavour. Same problem with my main, the 'speed lamb', zero flavour and even the sauerkraut salad didn't help excite my palate.

Of interest, they also had spaghetti bolognese on the menu, and I've since looked up 'speed lamb' on google and couldn't find it anywhere let alone a polish recipe?

An authentic and delicious experience! The food here was not only extremely tasty, yet was just like how my Babcia (grandmother) used to make. The Pierogi were amazing, devoured in minutes; Pork Goulash stuffed inside the potato pancake was also a major winner! However, the one dish anyone would have to order is the beetroot soup with beef dumplings. All of this washed down with a polish beer (Zywiec) and finished with a slice of plum cake (which is a must when visiting), was a great meal and experience. Overall, with the added decor, friendly and hospitable hosts, folk music and quick service, left me feeling like I was sitting back in the main square at Krakow.

We were a group of four on a Friday night and ordered peirogi and the potato pancake with salmon for entrees. Both were tasty and the potato pancake was lighter than anticipated.

For mains, we had the marysienka, goose and pork shank with Polish gnocchi.. Marysienka had a nice sauce and smaller than the other two mains but this was fine as we were sharing. Goose was moist. Pork shank was nice but my favourite part of this dish was the Polish gnocchi which was soft yet chewy and looked like homemade chips if you weren't paying attention.

Service is fantastic. Super lovely over the phone and very welcoming and friendly in person. Didn't have to wait too long for food.

One of the must-visit-places in Surry Hills..Renowned for its home made Polish foods..Fresh roses on tables, The high ceiling with its bright chandelier, tiers of home made Polish cakes on display, Friendly Polish jokes, lines of home made liquors on top of the cabinet...You are lucky if you meet Janusz, the owner of the restaurant, coz He will entertain you and make sure you have an enjoyable evening for the next hour or two...Went there with my Polish Colleague and I basically ate what she picked..I tasted the famous Borsch (with dumplings), finished a bowl of Zurek (Polish Rye soup with Polish Sausage and Boiled egg), shared a plate of Bigos (Beef Sauerkraut soup), sipping a slot of Wild Cherry liquor, took away a slice of Easter Cake, shared a slice of Poppy Seed Crumble with ice cream with my Polish Colleague... I felt content..grateful and went back to office smiling :))...

Cute restaurant serving authentic and decently priced Polish food. I haven't seen many Polish restaurants in Sydney, so this was a rare find. My friend and I came here for lunch on a Friday. There were a few other people in the other restaurant, and we were served quickly. Service was friendly.
I had the mixed polish dumplings (pierogi) which were delicious, and cooked well, not too soft and not too hard. My friend had a smoked salmon sandwich, and enjoyed her dish.
We didn't have to wait long for our food either. After we were finishing up, the owner came and chatted to us, and encouraged us to come back for the breakfast the next day. Overall, very enjoyable dining experience here, and will definitely be back.

The staff here are wonderful! The gentleman serving us was so friendly and we couldn't say no to dessert because he made it sound so good, and it was so good! We had been craving perogies and Alchemy's are delicious. You have to get them with bacon and then you have to try one of the great looking desserts! If we weren't so full from our perogies we would've got a dessert each instead of sharing.

We had a family dinner at this restaurant. I saw some negative comments before visiting, so was curious about the place, but all negative comments turned out to be false. First of all, the food was really authentic, as in eating what my mother cooked in Poland, could not get more authentic than that. Moreover, tables were covered with traditional Polish handmade tablecloths, which made the experience even more authentic. Quality of the food was also very good. I would recommend pierogi with mushrooms, in my opinion boiled were much better than fried, really delicious, but wife liked the fried pierogi more. Daughter really loved the pancakes ("nalesniki"). I'm vegan and was advised on the menu choices. The service was excellent, prompt and accurate and atmosphere was very nice for a dinner. Price was affordable and I would say good deal considering the location and the overall experience. I would only like to see more vegan dishes in the menu and Vegan options clearly marked in the menu, at the moment only vegetarian labeling.

DO NOT COME TO THIS RESTAURANT. Had an Easter arvo meal here with my Polish wife and we were both appalled at the service. The menu items had additional charges to them, for example an extra $5 for a single boiled egg. The wait staff looked exploited and not healthy. And they charged us an extra 10% on top of our bill for dining during Easter which they never mentioned to us before sitting down. The owner was so annoying during the meal with his corny jokes and constant butting into our conversations. From previous reviews people have said all the positive reviews are frim the owner or people associated with them. In my honest opinion, all.I can say is that this restaurant is just a pack of thieves!
Tom Schweppes
Weird owner. Friendly to start off with then changes face when you don't buy everything on the menu. It's a shame considering the food is good and very close to us.

Pushy Service. Ok folks. I was looking forward to dining at Alchemy with my Polish partner but I do have to say that the meals were too pricey and the owner was trying to push us to buy up the mains!
When we told him we were ok with what we had I have never seen such a turn about face. He just grabbed our menus and the warm, friendly fellow we saw at the start was replaced by a guy who could not give a fkying f##$k!!
What I noticed was that there was a touch of a used car salesman at work. Little tricks of the trade to open up our wallets further.
I will say that there is potential with this place if the prices were a tad lower as the food itself is great. Maybe because of the location in Surry Hills it reflects the prices on offer.
And if the owner could reign in the used car salesman tactic and stick to his warm story telling he started off with, then the experience will be top notch.
Bad Table Manners
Overall, Polish food is delicious but it’s also very filling! So although the cakes and desserts on display were tempting, we were all too full to fit in dessert.

One cold evening, after dinner at Prasits, my dining companions and I were in search of a nice hot cup of coffee. We found refuge in Alchemy Cafe Restaurant, the owner was so very friendly and accommodating that I made a mental note to come back and try t

Extremely expensive. Overpriced and bad value for money. Which is a shame, because generally the food is great.
Anna
Rude, aggressive, bizzare service. I ordered the mushroom and sauerkraut perogies with no sour cream as I am lactose intolerant. When I realised they had given me the potato and cheese perogies I asked the waitress whether I'd gotten the right meal - I didn't think it was a big deal as every now and then orders get mixed up in restaurants, it happens. A man (the owner i assume) then came over and told me that I was wrong, I was lying and that if I wanted mushroom perogies I would have to pay double. It was the most aggressive bizarre behaviour I've ever witnessed in a restaurant, I've never been treated so rudely before. I'm not sure why I would have ordered something with dairy on purpose that would make me sick. I hope the owner learns some basic customer service and anger management skills.
Kate
Perfect for a cold winter night. Consistently good food and great beers. The owner is very friendly too. Need to be hungry though - the portions are big and the food is rich and filling.

Great honest food!. Delicious food that is authentic and great friendly service! I've been walking past this place for years and I'm glad I've finally tried it. The owner is also a lovely man and his wife cooks in the kitchen. Highly recommended!

I love Alchemy. Fantastic food, fantastic owners and very friendly atmosphere

Dessert. I popped by Alchemy for dessert and was rewarded with an amazing three layer cake which was essentially a mash-up of traditional Polish cakes (or so my Polish friends assured me): a poppy seed cake base, a not-too-heavy cheesecake middle and an apple crumble crown. A generous scoop of vanilla ice-cream rounded off the order. Even though I had a heavy dinner moments earlier, I didn't have any problem finishing this dessert. Will definitely keep Alchemy in mind if we're in need of dessert and a nightcap (they have an extensive drinks list) in the future.

Absolutely fantastic! I've never had Polish food before, but was plesantly surprised! Wonderful wait staff and the atmosphere was very romantic. Well priced and the food was superb.

Alchemy!. This is a great little restaurant and mine host Yanos tends to his customers like gold. The food is amazing and the atmosphere gentle, warm and welcoming. I never miss this place on my trips to Sydney and I am going there tonight!

Authentic food. Pleasant service and atmosphere.

Worst reataurant ever. Arrived for a late dinner for 2. We were seated at a table for 4, assuming we would have the table for ourselves, but we were very shortly joined by another couple. We were the only non-polish people in the restaurant and we were completely ignored by the waiter. The couple next to us ordered drinks and dinner before we were even looked at. We waited for 30 minutes but the waiter refused to even look at us. In the end we were forced to leave without ordering.
DO NOT GO HERE. I don't know how they possibly have a 88% rating. I think they must be writing their own reviews.

A Hidden Gem. I've been walking by this place for 4 years just thinking it was a coffee shop.

I had my first meal there tonight and I can't believe I haven't been here sooner. The owner (I assume he was, he was behind the till) and staff were incredibly welcoming.

The service was excellent as was the food. I usually go cheap and cheerful around Surry Hills but I will be spending the little bit extra in future to come here.

From start to finish the interaction and service with the staff was fun and enjoyable. The food was excellent. Can't recommend this place enough. I made this account just to post this. That's how much I enjoyed it.

One thing I will say though. the place itself is pretty cramped. Don't show up with a group of 10 and expect to be comfortable.
Just
Bad Service. Asked for pierogi - recieved tasteless deep fried dumpilings, when complained - whole kitchen argued with me. If you have eaten Polish food - this is definitely not it! deep fried dumpling are a joke and a sign of a lazy kitchen. rude service also - If you want realy Polish food go to a real Polsish restaurant - this is not it!!! Trust me (Im Polish) shame on you Alchemy!

Terrific. Friends insisted I try this place and I was not disappointed. The servings were large and delicious, the ambience was warm and old fashioned and the staff were attentive and eager to please.

Best Polish restaurant in town.. I'm Polish so maybe a little biased, but I have been here several times with non-Polish friends and the food is consistently great. I've also come here for just cake and coffee as the cakes are delicious. Heart warming Polish food, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Terrible Experience!!!. Although portions were generous size, quality of the food only average. Restaurant owner turned up to be very unfriendly and not trustworthy, after charging us triple price for pre-agreed menu. Restaurant has no Polish spirit either. I will definitely stay away from this place.

My partner and I are regulars to this place for breakfast and are consistently delighted with the food, service and ambience... After reading another review about the courtyard- I will certainly go back for lunch AND dinner. I have to say I find "Jakub's" comment hard to believe, as the staff are nothing but hospitable!
Esther Tang
A quaint little shop. I came here for breakfast with a friend and immediately noticed the simple ambience - I was particularly delighted to see a single fresh rose in a small vase at every table, which made for charming, European decor.

My second surprise came in discovering this place had a small couryard at the back (where the toilets are also situated). This was a relaxing place to chat and lounge.

As for the food, the breakfast was well prepared and tasty. My friend requested a special order and this was prepared obligingly. The service was mild and friendly. I'd love to come back to this place again.
Rob
Amazing, incredible, magnificent, splendid, superb, grand, glamorous;. I am very surprised by this comment of jakob81.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being a regular client of this beauty, small, restaurant,I have never experienced this type of service;in fact the staff has always been helpful and cordial.
When I am waiting for a meal, the staff will check up on me and make sure I have water and will apologise if the food is taking long to get ready, although it usually is on time.
I have always been given a proper menu as well.
The food at this restaurant is excellent and a good representation of real POLISH cuisine.

Idon't understand WHAT he( jacob81) MUST HAVE DONE to receive service such as mentioned in the stupid comment.
Nadia
Stopped in for a chai latte on a cold night. Fresh poppies on the tables, candlelight, smooth jazz playing - a wonderful atmosphere! Very keen to come back and try the food. Oh, and the staff are charming.

Very Disappointed. Im Polish, and I was looking for a place for my birthday dinner with a group of friends. I've booked the table for 10 people for Saturday evening. After we showed up we've found that the room which was promised to us was already half filled. So we had to squeeze ourselves by the tiny table (combined of 4). There was no space to sit in relaxed way. I had to inform the owner that we were still waiting for the rest of my guests but unfortunately I will have 9 instead of 10 people coming. The owner got really upset and was rude to me - in front of my friends and other customers (the restaurant was full). He told me that I should tell him before that I will have less guests - so he could use one table for someone else...!
I felt like I was someone not important at all and that I should be very grateful that I got this booking (I made this reservation a week ago)...
The menu for us was combined of 5 dishes only - because I was informed (by the owner) that he cant blocked his kitchen if some of my friends would like to get something else.. (!).
Our menu was printed on white sheet of paper without prices on it - I had to ask for the original menu to find wat the prices were - I heard "take it!" - thats how the owners speaks to his guests...? We are not friends, Im not his colleague.. So I found it a little bit inappropriate.
It was my birthday and I should feel good about everything - and this experience was far far away from this. My friends (from Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia and Poland) could see that this was not going well.
Finally I decided to leave. I told the owner that I would like to pay for the dumplings (which I ordered for the entree - a week ago) and take them away - and because we are not happy about the service we will leave.
The owner got really angry and told me that I have to pay for everything - 10 dishes (which we didnt even order then).
So once again I had to tell him that my booking was for + or - 10 people (when I booked place I informed him that I could have more or less than 10 people coming), and after we came - the table for us was not big enough, our room was already half filled with other guests, there were no prices on the menu, and that I was not happy with his attitude...
I told him again, that I will pay for dumplings if they are ready but thats all..
And here's another surprise:
Kitchen staff didnt know about our dumplings!!!!!
They should be ready waiting for us as an entree (at 7.30). It was 7.45 and nothing was prepared!!

I was looking for Polish restaurant to show my friends how does Polish food taste like. I wanted them to feel Polish hospitality.
This was very very BAD EXPERIENCE.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place.

Finally we ended up in "In the mood for Thai" - not Polish at all:) but the service, food and ambience were great. They saved my Birthday.
Helen Yoo
Yep - Dumplings are yum. I had the pork, spinach, cheese, pink pepper main (can't remember the name!) and it was delicious. So well cooked with flavours working perfectly together. My companions had the pork goulash and paprika chicken. We all tried each others and we loved them all. Friendly staff, we'll go back again - worth the $$!
Russ Parker
Wonderful ambiance very friendly staff. I recommend the Polish Dumplings. Fantastic as snack or main.
