Superb cabbage rolls. The garlic bread with cheese was amazing. Super friendly and very helpful waiter at Monday's lunch (3 June).Nothing was too much trouble for him.
They do giant schnitzels with Jager sauce and rosti. Similar to una’s but I think Maggie’s does a better Jager sauce. Recommended if you want some good hearty German food with generous serving sizes.
YUM YUM YUM! Amazing food! Lived up to the rave review from my husband! Will be returning as soon as possible. Only downside is parking, but that's Potts Point
My favourite chicken schnitzel restaurant!!!! Hands down it's the best in the area!!!! The customer service is attentive and very personable. The schnitzels are crunchy yet very fresh and moist on the inside. I also love the flavour of the gravy. Don't go anywhere but here for schnitzel .
After seeing a show at the Hayes Theatre (Side Show, very enjoyable), my better half suggested we eat a schnitzel. Una’s or Maggie’s? I asked. Maggie’s was closer. A venerable institution and not on quite as busy a strip as Una’s, Maggie’s serves up hearty German fare: cabbage rolls, goulash, pork roast and dumplings. But the thing is, either at Una’s or Maggie’s, I can never go past the veal or chicken jager schnitzel.
Always a go to when we're very hungry. The schnitzels are huge and the service is fast and efficient. I also highly recommend the pork knuckles on Thursday and Saturdays. They are also huge and one is more than enough for to people.
Came across this excellent Austrian / German restaurant tucked away down a side street near King's Cross. Ordered the Bratwurst sausage & gravy with sauerkraut and potatoes, along with a Paulaner Weissbier. Hearty and delicious, just the way German food should be. Service was also friendly and faultless. Highly recommend!
Schnit: Chicken Schnitzel with Garlic Gypsy sauce, $21.
Succulent meat and fantastic tasty sauce. Rosti is consistently above average at Maggie's. Charming service. Hard to fault.
Cheap as chips, tasty as f....... Went to Maggies last night because we often go to Una's but wanted to try it's direct competitor. I was approaching with a little trepidation after reading a couple of reviews on here and the three dollar signs Urbanspoon have put against it. Both were completely wrong. The service was really friendly and though not rushed off their feet they were busy, they were still prompt and unflustered.
The fact of the pricing annoys me a little. Urbanspoon have done this a lot I've noticed, and have given places where $30-$40 per main only two $ signs, yet they give Maggies, (which is actually cheaper than Una's, and they only have two $) gets three $ for mains nominally $20!
Anyway, onto the food. Hot, fresh, tasty and lots of it. Schnitzel are everywhere in Sydney, but these guys have it down to a fine art. My girlfriend had the special which was chicken stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes, cammembert, and avocado with rosti and veg, and this was equally fantastic. Top all that off with your choice of good European beer, either draught or bottled, and you have the makings of a great meal. The place is set back from the road with about 1/3 of seating outside, which is always a big plus too.
Highly recommend!
Not quite as good as Unas on Victoria st but a very close second.
It was OK. Three of us went for dinner. My wife had Hungarian Goulash. As a Russian born person she has had many genuine Goulash dinners. Her view was that they had really overdone the paprika. Her mother had the "Dutch Croquettes - beef croquettes served with rösti and mustard" - she said it was really a vegetarian dish and could not find any meat. My wife said that the dish tasted a little like a samosa and perhaps they have an Asian or Indian chef. I had the chicken schnitzel - generous and tasty. Overall it was OK, but would not rush back. Service was very good.
Good food, awesome service, great price.
Go here every weekend. The waitress is fantastic and knows our orders by heart and always makes us feel welcome. Better yet their prices are great!
Cheapest brekkie in Potts. Great breakfast , lovely poached eggs and the lunch and dinner menu looked great!
Coffee tasted fab !
Right next door to little park where they have market over weekend.
Staff friendly and smiling.
Poached eggs & toast $6.50 and nicely done.
Homey comfort food. Went there last night with a couple friends, service was very attentive and the place is neat and cosy with a warm vibe to it. Got the fried cheese and pickled herring salad to share, cheese was ok, the salad was alright except I found the herring to be extremely salty.
For mains we got a chicken schnitzel with spicy sauce and two specials, roast pork and lamb shanks. My friend said the pork was delicious and I tried a bit of schnitzel, the sauce had a nice kick with I found the chicken to be a bit dry and bland. But I think all chicken is bland in general.
My shanks were delicious and I got an extra side of spatzel which were light and pillow soft and delicious with the lamb gravy. The rosti and steamed veges on the side were acceptable. The portion sizes are very generous.
We shared apple strudel to finish, but it was a bit disappointing as the apple filling was kinda hard, dry and not that sweet. Good thing we were getting icecream down the road.
Overall it was a good hearty dinner, we sat for a while after finishing to digest and chat and weren't rushed to leave. Great place, I'll come back
Really good German food. So delicious it reminds me of my mothers cooking. The service was affective If you like German food this is probably one of the best in Sydney
Good food, good service. Here, it is not about nit-picking with a fine-tooth comb. No, you come here to sit down, shut up and do whatever it takes to wolf the huge portions down. And please have meat. Jaeger schnitzel, meatloaf, pork knuckle etc - it's all good. ALL. You want to veg out? The park nearby has plenty of grass. You don't like the service? Then go to a cheap pub for $10 parmi instead. But prices here are already quite the bargain and if you've gone round the german establishments in the vicinity, you'd realize what a gem Maggie's is and it is great they aren't charging more. Airconditioning could be better, and smokers sucking on their cancer sticks should also help themselves to the grass in the park.
Cheap and cheerful. Good homestyle meals well cooked and tasty. Huge portions even for a big eater, the schnitzel was the size of my plate. Nice surroundings in very über cool Potts point.
Amazing food for a reasonable price, great value! The staff were friendly. Great find, would definately come back here.
Chicken jaeger schnitzel is worth a try. Sadly I have to drive here, otherwise I'd try the range of beer and schnapps more.
Love the bfst specially coz it's served till 2:30pm :)
Schnitzels and Strudels and Bears, Oh My!. I'm a Euro-carbs convert. Having only recently discovered what turns out to be a neighborhood icon, I've rapidly become addicted to the hearty German cuisine on offer at Maggie's. The menu is stacked with classic options - schnitzels, goulash, bratwurst sausage and cabbage rolls. Then you layer on the sides - rosti, spatzle, deep fried mushrooms, creamed spinach - or maybe a salad of cucumber, potato (yes, more potato) or herrings - I'm telling you, it's a symphony of European goodness. Service is brisk, but not brusque, and you can get in and out fast. The decor is daggy chic but fun, squint a little and you could be somewhere up a snowy mountain, and you'll feel right at home ordering more of that potent gluwein.
Nice food and reasonable price. Had a kick ass jager schnitzel yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
t place got nice beer Erdingerrrrrrrrrrrrrr ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Short and sweet hater of maggies can go and eat pooo hehe
Consistently Good. Maggie's is dangerously delicious. My husband goes to the gym so he can eat here more often. The siren call of the schnitzel brings us back time after time, and the meals are consistently good, as is the friendly service. The restaurant is a welcome haven of reasonably priced, generously served 'real' food in a neighborhood where dining options are increasingly chi chi. This is food like you WISH mama used to make. It's a great place for a group - the energy in the room is very positive and last time we sang for a birthday the whole place joined in. We bring the (fussy) kids and they love it too, particularly the crepes for dessert.
Great for all the family!. On a recent Friday night trip through Potts Point we found the best place. Maggie's on Fitzroy Gardens is a little gem in the middle of the sea of swimming humanity that is the Cross & Potts Point. In the face of the hippest places around, here is a a friendly inviting establishment that is incredibly warm and welcoming. The staff were not only professional but accommodating of our large group. The atmosphere/ decor - a beautiful collection of eclectic bric a brac. Tasteful and hilariously tasteless at the same time. They could do with a few more cuckoo clocks and cross stitching. But now for the food. This could have been the usual disaster that is the "family meal" involving teenagers. Usually we end up with "glass 1/2 full" levels of tribal satisfaction - someone always seems let down or under catered for. But at this little joint, the selection was well crafted, hearty schnitzels balanced by healthy salads; traditional dishes with modern flair. The beer and wine - a combination of European brews and a selection of interesting wines. And finally - the bill. Not as cheap as a family meal at Macca's, but surprisingly low considering the quality of the fare. I'll definitely return across the bridge to this little winner.
Schnitzel heaven. I was very happy to have chanced upon Maggies during a recent visit to Potts Point. We wandered in to this fabulously kitsch Tyrolean wonderland on a cold night, and the vibe inside was buzzy, fun and cosy.
The service was exactly how I like it - very efficient and friendly without being overly familiar.
The menu (both food and drinks) is vast, and the servings are huge. We were slightly concerned they were too big, but we managed to work through it all, because the food is just great: traditional Austrian / German and middle European dishes. There were 6 of us, and we all really enjoyed our meals.
The Jaeger schnitzel seemed to be the hot favourite, but my personal highlight was the creamed spinach - the only time I have ever tasted better than my Hungarian grandmother's.
The prices were quite reasonable, especially considering the size of the meals.
We would all definitely go back, and I would recommend it for a fun, filling, low-key night out.
This is a great place to go if you want delicious gluttonous comfort food. The service is great and very friendly. Considering the portion sizes, its also very reasonably priced
Big portion and fast service. Locating this place was not a difficult task. This place was just a few meters away from the famous Kings Cross fountain.
We were quite surprised by the fast service. We felt like we were just waiting for 5 minutes before the food came.
The Jager Schitzel came with mushroom sauce and rosti and it was great. They also have this special menu on some days like pork knuckles and they were all huge.
They also have Austrian & German beer like Gosser and Erdinger.
Comfort Food, Laughable Service.. I live near Maggies and eat there reasonably often.
In winter when it is cold and drizzly there is nothing better than Maggie's Jager Schnitzel (you can choose from Veal or Chicken). The massive serve of schnitzel comes with a beautiful mushroom jager sauce and creamy rosti with a crispy top. It is the ultimate comfort food which can be complemented perfectly with a serve of sauerkraut.
It's not the cheapest schnitzel in the area (it will set you back about $18.00) but it is the best in fact all the dished I have tried there are great, big serves and it is served quickly once you order.
So basically the food is great - the service however is appalling. Today especially so. At 1.45pm when I sat down I was the sixth table there, the others were in various stages of service and there was only one waitress and Maggie. Maggie stood behind the bar and did whatever it was she was doing. The waitress just was completely out of her depth and was blissfully unaware she was so. It took 15 minutes for her to bring me a menu at which time she took my drink order. She then went made some coffees, delivered some meals, took an order, had a conversation with the chef, chatted with Maggie and then returned to my table and asked me if I would like to order a drink.
As I have mentioned the meals are enormous so I opted to take the half I hadn't eaten with me. I was charged $1 for a take-away container. I wouldn't have minded if they said something first but the charge was just added to the bill.
This is not the first time for the secretly added charges. I once shared a mean with someone and before the meal they bring out a small bowl of cabbage, on this occasion they bought two - neither of us ate it but we were charged $2.50 for it anyway, even though we didn't ask for it or eat it.
The other thing which mortified me was when the chef came out of the kitchen took a seat out the front and lit a cigarette, I don't have a problem with people choosing to smoke but that just looks bad.
So if you want huge serves of comfort food, Maggies is the place to go but if you want good service look somewhere else.
Wonderful Austrian Cuisine. Maggie, who formerly had Una's Restaurant (Victoria St, Darlinghurst) and who had diners lining up for dinner for years is working her magic again.
This time, at the Potts Point Restaurant, bearing her name in the heart of the Cross... just next door to the Post Office fronting onto Fitzroy Gardens.
All the old favourites are available including my favourite Wiener Schnitzel. This very popular and iconic Viennese Speciality is cooked to perfection and all but melts in your mouth.
For me the various Strudels Maggie produces are a sweet-tooth's delight
