Great cafe with nice ambience, open til late - famous for their hungarian chimney cakes, tried the cinnamon sugar with Nutella between the layers and it was amazing (fresh, fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside). The green tea was strong and aromatic. Cafe had samples of chocolate cake (very soft, was on the opposite spectrum of fudgy but tasted good) and cherry crumble (a bit sour but okay). Great place to chat with friends.

Best cakes in Sydney. Flourless chocolate cake is my all time fav. The prices are fairly steep, but definitely worth it. Coffee is quite nice too

What’s not to love about Kurtosh? Lots of choices, great classics and some interesting combos, plus you can get whatever size cut you want, which makes it great to sample a number of different options. Of the items we had, the espresso butter almond chocolate roulade was definitely the winner. It was pretty busy on Sat night, so you’ll have to be patient to wait for a table.

Went here just after lunch when all of us were already full and still couldn’t resist a bit of dessert. We ordered the tiramisu, another cake I can’t remember the name of, a coffee and the Egyptian (?) ice tea. They were all very good and it was relatively quiet at the time so we had the large-ish shop nearly to ourselves.

It’s a nice place to relax and satisfy your sweet tooth. I’d been here a few years ago and remember it just as fondly.

Went to Kurtosh and didn't try the kurtosh... in my defence, I've already tried trdelnik in Prague, which kurtosh looked quite similar to, and wasn't a huge fan of them. Instead, we got some caramel oat thing I forgot the name of and the cheesecake swirl brownie from the selection of slab cakes, as well as a chocolate fudge cookie ($4.50?) and a chocolate twist ($4.90?).

I wasn't personally a fan of the oat slice, but my friend (who was the one who ordered it) liked it. The brownie was alright but I wouldn't recommend getting it when there is such a large variety of other slab cakes on display. It wasn't quite rich or fudgy enough for me to call it a good brownie.

The chocolate fudge cookie was excellent and I'm glad it was recommended as one of the "must-try" desserts of Sydney. Meanwhile, the chocolate twist was good but a bit boring in my opinion - it felt like something that you can get anywhere.

I loved the chai latte, served in a teapot with the leaves in an infuser. I would highly recommend letting it sit for a bit though, otherwise it is very weak. The turkish fruit iced tea was a bit odd, but it was refreshing.

Kurtosh is a great little cafe for a rolled Kurtosh, essentially a pastry snack with cinnamon or other toppings. I personally think they have a Licorice taste to them too. You can also get coffees and tea and cake by the gram. Open late for that after dinner snack

Great place for dessert and a coffee when catching up with friends, when going out on a first date or also for when relatives visit from overseas. The variety of cakes keeps you coming back for more and wanting to try a different flavor. I like the fact we can sample a variety of flavors and control the portions.

Food: the dessert have huge variance for you to choose from. It may be hard for those indecisive people. I would highly recommend the tiramisu as it have been my personal fav over and over again even tho I’ve been trying others out to make sure I have other fav but it’s so hard. It’s not so sweet which is a plus point if you’re looking after your sugar intake. It’s rich and creamy and the chocolate dusting on top really give a hint of bitterness to it.

It would be great if they’ll put the cake labels on the cake so customer wouldn’t be clueless and ask what is it.

Service : usually only 2-3 wait staff so if everyone is busy might be some wait time for you to be attended

Price: the cake are weight to price and there’s no price list of how much per/100g cost . Hence try to get receipt every time

This cake shop/cafe is on Crown Street. Consistency is key and had tried one their sister outlets before which was excellent.

Service is very good and lady was more than helpful. We browsed for quite a while deciding on what to get. We settled upon a Cappuccino and an Iced Mocha to drink and shared an Espresso Butter, Almond Chocolate Roulade to eat in and got a slice of Hazelnut Truffle Slab to takeaway. The lady was kind enough to keep that slice refrigerated whilst we consumed the other items. The cakes are sold by weight at a cost of $4.90/100g which means you can be as indulgent as you want to be! The cakes are top notch and taste wonderful. Drinks complimented the cake well. Amazing walked away without buying a kurtosh this time round!

Enjoying some desserts from Kurtosh where you can choose the size of the dessert you like however small or big. The final price is charged by weight.

The strawberry pistachio cake looked great so it was triple in size compared to the baked cheesecake and peanut butter slice. We made the right choice!

Nice bakery-cafe which sells cake by weight.

Presentation:
There were about 12-15 different cakes on display. All looked really good. I went for the strawberry cream sponge cake.

Taste:
It tasted really good. It wasn't too sweet and the crust of the sponge had a really nice texture. because it wasn't too overly sweet, i had no problems demolishing it.

Also ordered a fruit green iced tea which was super refreshing. It was a hot day so this was much needed.

Service:
Good service. Staff were polite. However, I noticed there were quite a few vacant tables with dirty dishes which needed removing.

Location/Atmosphere:
Located on crown street in Surry Hills. Has a rustic feel to it.

Recommendation:
I definitely recommend this place. Can't wait to come back to try the other cakes :)

Cost:
For cake and drink it was approximately $11.

I have been wanting to visit this cafe for a very long time and I can’t believe what I’ve been missing out on. They are famous for their Kurtosh pastries which are made fresh to order so be prepared to wait. I was recommended the cinnamon flavour which was quite nice and I am keen to try their other flavours such as pistachio.

My favourite part of this cake shop though is the large selection of slab cakes that are sold by weight. This is such a good idea as you can try more kinds of cakes in smaller portions. My favourites are the tiramisu, espresso butter and almond roulade and the raspberry baked cheesecake which were light and delicious.

I love their baked cheesecake (4/5): If you're after something very fluffy, light, with a hint of mousse texture and a savoury touch of cheese that reminds you of a Japanese soufflé cake than this is for you.

If you're after something darker and decadent then I recommend the Beetroot and Sour Cherry Dark Chocolate Mousse Slice (4/5): this instantly melts in the mouth with rich dark chocolate flavour and real bits of sour cherry throughout the base. I loved every bite.

The blueberry cheesecake (3/5) was ok but nothing too special.

The place is like a bakery and a cafe in one.
Decor is unique and the place is quite spacious as well. You can sit inside or outside.
I love that they give you free tasting of some sweet treats :)
Tried their pistachio Kurtosh and it’s pretty good. Price is not cheap but the size is generous. They make it fresh for you so there’s a bit of a wait there.
Coffee is surprisingly awesome (their own bean).
Intrigued to try their other baked goodies next time.

My first time trying kurtosh and now craving for more. We picked one with pistachio, and tried the non dairy chocolate sliced cake. The chimney bread was so big, I had to share it with other 2 friends. But it tasted good.

The place in surry hills is also nice. Love the ambience, a good place to catch up with friends.

Food (5/5): A kurtosh from Kurtosh is a must try for any dessert lover! Shown in the photos is the pistachio version. The various other pastries and cakes at the store also go down very well
Ambience (5/5): Brick walls with wood interior make a great urban old school atmosphere. The areas where the pastries are being made is open for all to see which is awesome
Overall: Must try, worth your money

A cold winters day in Sydney, and an urge for something warm but sweet, brought us to the newly opened Kurtosh in Darling Square. The homely cafe smells like the most delectable treats, including cakes, cheesecake, tea and the thing that brings everyone in - fresh Kurtosh. What is Kurtosh?. Originating from Hungary, Kurtosh is a spit cake dessert, made similar to a funnel cake. It’s topped with sugar, nuts, cinnamon and sometimes filled with whipped cream. Here in the cafe they are made absolutely fresh!

Love the chimney bread here!! It is made fresh daily and it is honestly one of the best things to start your morning with. I finished one throughout the day, it was very pleasant even when it wasn't warm and will definitely be returning to try their other toppings. My favourite is the pistachio and rose - I definitely recommend at least one try of the Kurtosh chimney bread! 😊

Lovely little place! One of those places that I had always walked by but hadn’t been in. Had a taste of some of their cakes (so many cakes!) and the orange and olive oil cake was delicious. Ultimately, I ended up ordering the plain cinnamon Kurtosh, as it was my first time here. It was great! Next time I’ll get one of the flavoured ones :)

um, i live a minute away from KĂŒrtösh and this place, is on my fave spots in sydney. think of pretty interior, rustic furniture and beautiful tiles to greet you at the front. it's perfect for #ihavethisthingwithfloors !

a must try is definitely the Chimney Cake. my favourite is definitely the cinammon one and I always ask for nutella filling. a combo that will change your life, hehe. if you're unsure about what to have, you can always try the samples at the front.

or if chimney cakes does not fancy you, just go for the wide variety of cakes at KĂŒrtösh! pick any serving you want to, like the tiniest square or largest chunk you want, the staff will cut it for you and weigh all the sweet treats all at one go.  yes, hehe, you pay by weight.

and this place has the best chai around town. served in a pot with honey on the side. mmmm!

I like the way how they sell cakes. Everything was charged by weight. Basically you can just ask them how much 100g of cake looks like and how much is the price of 100g of this cake. Very simple and convenient way to purchase. Besides, all cakes look delicious and amazing. Kurtosh is the Best option of a place to enjoy your dessert. It's definitely worthy going there again. I think I ordered almond cake. The drinks were chai latte and flat white.

Love the ambience of this Surry Hills outlet. As a cafe it's a pretty chilled place to hang out. They make a good iced tea and the coffee isn't too bad either. I thought the kurtosh was ok but my friends enjoyed it a lot more. Each to their own I guess? Nevertheless I think it's a cool and different concept of bringing in Hungarian deserts to Australia!

We opted for 'Mum's chocolate cake' and a 'Lemon Meringue' slice - the cakes are priced by weight ($4/100g). The chocolate cake was not too dense and was quite tasty whilst the lemon meringue had an authentic lemon flavour to it and was light and not too sweet. We also tried their apricot teacake which was our personal favourite. Will be coming back soon to try some more flavours though!

Chocolate Cookies was very soft so feel like eating cake and was chocolate cream inside! I recommend all of the chocoholic!! :)

Industrial feel to this elementary space, reminiscent of an old butcher's shop or disused motor garage workshop. The grunge decor goes unnoticed by the eager patrons, lining up like oompah loompahs to partake of these delicacies. The hand rolled kurtosh are made in front of you, on magnificent marble bench tops, no doubt chosen for their cool, smooth surface prep. Then placed on long wooden rollers on longer skewers, baked in an odd little metal box (aka oven) that looks straight out of Orwell's Room 101 in 1984. And here is the problem. They're VERY slow to make, and the queues are long. There's only 2 staff on a busy Friday night. 15-20min wait they say. Tables are full. All a bit of a shamozzle, but nothing 1 more staff won't fix.

One of the best hot chocolates I've ever had. Warm, viscous, sweet, dark and moody. Yum. But delivered by the cashier, who leaves the throng of hopeful customers to do the mundane.

Slab cakes, unusually bought by weight, are deceptive - they look spectacular, but fail to really please. They're bland, somewhat dry, and surprisingly unexciting. They promised so much more, especially with their sheer size and artistic descriptions.

Everything is however inexpensive, so I'll be quiet.

They describe themselves as Hungarian chimney cakes, but my Hungarian aunt had never heard of them. Good marketing all the same.

A search in google reveals that Kurtosh is cylindrical pastry spirals that originated in Hungarian-speaking regions in Romania.  I had never had anything from Hungary or Romania, so this is definitely exotic for me.

Kurtosh in Surry Hills is one of the franchises emerging in Sydney, selling not only the east european speciality but a range of other sweets. The cafe somehow bears little Hungarian influence except for the signature pastry.  It was run and cooked by Asian staff.

I don't know if Kurtosh is baked, toasted, grilled, fried or boiled in this cafe.  All I know is they set timer for 10 mins; after it went off they produced my Kurtosh from a bench top machine, all dark brown.  Then it was dipped into a tray of almonds for coating.  I took a bit when it was hot and finished the rest later that day. It was fine either hot or room temperature, no effect to the taste as far as I was concerned.  The outside of the pastry was sugar coated which gave its crispy texture when sugar was crystallised; the pastry was about 2cm thick, therefore inside layer remained raw pastry colour.  It didn't have much flavour other than sweet or depends on the topping you choose.  After a few more bits it grew on me, the pastry was thick and chewy; the almonds and sugar were crunchy and crispy.  It was big enough for two people to share one.

As I was waiting for my Kurtosh to be cooked, i noticed the cafe also sells a good range of sweets and offer eat in option.  I won't mind coming back for other cakes and pastries, they looked very inviting.

It is almost impossible to walk past Kurtosh without buying anything. When you can choose precisely how much cake you want, there is no excuse to not order 'just a small piece' (for scientific reasons). Of course, once you overcome that hurdle, you encounter the decision of choosing which cake from their display, and this is no easy task once you feast your eyes on the pretty slabs of cake they have on offer.

Orange almond and cranberry tea cake was a little wetter and more tart than I had hoped. Pops of cranberry really dominated this cake but I can definitely see it complimenting a cup of English Breakfast or Earl Grey. Salted caramel cake was light and mousse-like in texture. The base appeared to be a chocolate genoise and there were small pieces of fruit between the layers which was a nice surprise. Fudge cookie with white choc and peanut ganache was a dark horse. The crackly cookie looked dry and brittle but it was crisp and light in texture. My only regret was choosing the smallest one!

Our sample plate set us back $10.40. I love the concept of paying by weight as you can choose exactly what you pay for without all the extra fluffs of smeared sauces and pretty plating. My only nitpick would be that prices should be clearly marked as I had no idea how much each cake costs.

They have the most amazing varieties of desserts and mostly without the use of heavy creams and icings. I tried their cinnamon and nuts cake and it tasted like a pillowy baklava except for the rush of sugar syrup. Their lemon cheesecake had the perfect zing and was velvety smooth. Their only drawback is that they have a minimum limit on eftpos.

For a delicious afternoon snack, we headed to Kurtosh in Surry Hills to sample some of their sweet treats and of course, the famous Kurtosh bread! We chose a Cinnamon Kurtosh, which was a crispy golden baked bread scroll coated in sugar and cinnamon topping. It was perfectly sweet and balanced with the slightly spiced bread, and toasty warm, even in the takeaway bag! We especially enjoyed the unique shape, which made it easy to tear off small pieces from the swirl and snack on them as we went.

Very pleasant cafe atmosphere, European style patisserie, rustic in nature. They make and serve cakes like no one else in Sydney, they definitely have a unique selling point. Cakes are made and displayed on huge slabs, and you pay per gram, they just cut out a slice to your liking.

I had the Tiramisu, it was tasty, I enjoyed it, but have had better, don't think they are trying to please fine dinners, everything I've had there I've enjoyed.

I ordered a hot chocolate, it was nice, but took forever for the barista to make, he didn't seem to be in any hurry.

On display were massive slabs of tempting cakes and decadent slices, and of course, their famous KĂŒrtƑskalĂĄcs (just called KĂŒrtƑsh). The waitress looking after the counter was wonderfully friendly and helped us in the dessert-decision-making process. I soon found out that KĂŒrtosh’s pricing is by weight basis, not by slice, which is really great news as you can have a small sliver of every cake there if you feel like it! It allowed you to try more, which we did.

They were also very generous with their testers!! There were plates filled with large mouthful size pieces of different cakes to try. Who doesn’t love a bit of a taste test!

Using my hands like you would when framing a photograph, I asked for slices “ahh about this big?” and the waitress happily sorted out our order. We got a slice of the Tiramisu, Peanut butter and Chocolate Ganache slab and the Baked Raspberry Cheesecake. They were all priced at $4.50 per 100g.

We also got a KĂŒrtƑsh! I asked the waitress which flavour would be best to have for your first ever KĂŒrtƑsh and she said the classic cinnamon flavour was the way to go, although the Nutella one did come a close second in her mind! A cinnamon chimney roof was ordered for $7.50 and was baked fresh while we waited at our table.

So satisyfing, love my nutella kurtosh with chai tea! Probably my favourite place for dessert in Sydney. Has a great relaxed feel, the staff are really nice and the Kurtosh is amazing.
I love the cinnamon one but the standout is the nutella one. Made fresh it arrives hot to your table and warm nutella is oozing from the layers of warm, buttery, spiralled sweet bread. The loose leaf teas are a great accompaniment. My favourite is chai, comes in a cool little teapot and I get honey and milk on the side. Wide selection of cakes available as well, all pretty good but not as nice as the Kurtosh. Great place to chill, have a chat and go after a crown street dinner as its open late and there's plenty of seating inside. Keep up the great work!

Cakes purchased by weight can be a dangerous thing, especially for cakes as tasty as these. I love the idea of this and really wish we had places like this in Perth.

This homey café is about one thing - Delicious, passed-down-from-mama recipe pastries and cakes. They're pretty proud of their house specialty - the twisty Hungarian pastry called (funnily), Kurtosh. It's quite good....

Friendly service from the staff and they have tastings of some of their cakes which tempted us to buy some to take home like their blondie, mums chocolate cake and caramel and pecan cake which were all delicious and rich! Glad we got a small piece of each.

Great place to come for coffee & cake!! The best thing is that cakes are served by weight/size, so you can try lots of smaller slices 😋 The savoury pastries are also divine!!!

Good coffee and interesting selection of cakes and pastries. I’m slowly making my way through them all but sour cherry crumble is my favourite so far- amazing extrude and it’s not super sweet. They also do a few savoury pastries 👍

I haven't actually tried their kurtosh because last time I ordered they told me there's a 30 minutes wait as they had a lot of online orders. I always have their cheese cake which is dense enough but not too heavy and not too sweet. Perfect with a cup of coffee. They weight the cakes so you don't really know how much you're paying so just order what you can eat.

I will never get over the novelty of being able to choose EXACTLY how much of each cake I want. Perfect for people who want to try everything but don’t want to eat a massive amount. Everything I’ve tried has been delish, but my favourite would be the Duo (white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse).

Beauty in the simplicity of this place. Coffee is amazing and pastry is yummy. Highly recommend. We went there after dinner and was such a beautiful way to end our night.
