Review Kurtosh Surry Hills - Sydney

Great place to come for coffee & cake!! The best thing is that cakes are served by weight/size, so you can try lots of smaller slices 😋 The savoury pastries are also divine!!!

Good coffee and interesting selection of cakes and pastries. I’m slowly making my way through them all but sour cherry crumble is my favourite so far- amazing extrude and it’s not super sweet. They also do a few savoury pastries 👍

Everything here is sooooooo good. I’ve tried a few of the cakes here and they were always so fresh and tasty. Coffee is always made to perfection. đŸ€€

I haven't actually tried their kurtosh because last time I ordered they told me there's a 30 minutes wait as they had a lot of online orders. I always have their cheese cake which is dense enough but not too heavy and not too sweet. Perfect with a cup of coffee. They weight the cakes so you don't really know how much you're paying so just order what you can eat.

We had tiramisu and fudge cookie. It was yummy, but nothing different from other shop. Not too sure the weight was correct because it was pretty small. Tea came with small pot and it was cool, it didn’t look like French style though.

The other day I asked for a slice of strawberry sponge cake to the value of around $6-$7. Instead of telling me how much the slice would be, he told me how much it weighed? Once I got the price it came to $4.20. I asked for a bigger slice. Then the guy adds another piece to the box. Again instead of telling me the cost, he tells me the weight. I then ask how much it would be, and he then says $13.40. I asked him to remove the smaller piece, and I’d take the larger one. It came to $6.85. Great, perfect - that wasn’t too hard, or was it? I then handed him a $20 note and he says, can you pay with card because I don’t have any change. The cake was for a friend of mine and I didn’t have a card nor did I have the exact money. Is this normal, usual when buying a slice of cake from this establishment? I left without the cake, due to him being unable to give me change from a $20 note. Bizarre and really unfriendly experience.

I will never get over the novelty of being able to choose EXACTLY how much of each cake I want. Perfect for people who want to try everything but don’t want to eat a massive amount. Everything I’ve tried has been delish, but my favourite would be the Duo (white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse).

Beauty in the simplicity of this place. Coffee is amazing and pastry is yummy. Highly recommend. We went there after dinner and was such a beautiful way to end our night.

This place will spoil dessert lover with their dessert options.
Cream cheese brownies was awesome.
Beetroot, sour cherry and chocolate was amazing.
Place was packed and you have to wait passionately for seat.

Great cafe with nice ambience, open til late - famous for their hungarian chimney cakes, tried the cinnamon sugar with Nutella between the layers and it was amazing (fresh, fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside). The green tea was strong and aromatic. Cafe had samples of chocolate cake (very soft, was on the opposite spectrum of fudgy but tasted good) and cherry crumble (a bit sour but okay). Great place to chat with friends.
Andrea
Best cakes in Sydney. Flourless chocolate cake is my all time fav. The prices are fairly steep, but definitely worth it. Coffee is quite nice too

What’s not to love about Kurtosh? Lots of choices, great classics and some interesting combos, plus you can get whatever size cut you want, which makes it great to sample a number of different options. Of the items we had, the espresso butter almond chocolate roulade was definitely the winner. It was pretty busy on Sat night, so you’ll have to be patient to wait for a table.

Went here just after lunch when all of us were already full and still couldn’t resist a bit of dessert. We ordered the tiramisu, another cake I can’t remember the name of, a coffee and the Egyptian (?) ice tea. They were all very good and it was relatively quiet at the time so we had the large-ish shop nearly to ourselves.

It’s a nice place to relax and satisfy your sweet tooth. I’d been here a few years ago and remember it just as fondly.

Stumbled across this cafe on the way back from lunch and after doing some zomato-ing, I wanted to try the kurtosh however there was a long wait and I had no time. So I settled for trying some of their delicious cakes! The best part is there is a few free samples that you can devour while you wait. You can choose how many grams/big or small you want your slices to me and it's price per gram/kg.

The only downfall is that, this place is quite pricey.

Went to Kurtosh and didn't try the kurtosh... in my defence, I've already tried trdelnik in Prague, which kurtosh looked quite similar to, and wasn't a huge fan of them. Instead, we got some caramel oat thing I forgot the name of and the cheesecake swirl brownie from the selection of slab cakes, as well as a chocolate fudge cookie ($4.50?) and a chocolate twist ($4.90?).

I wasn't personally a fan of the oat slice, but my friend (who was the one who ordered it) liked it. The brownie was alright but I wouldn't recommend getting it when there is such a large variety of other slab cakes on display. It wasn't quite rich or fudgy enough for me to call it a good brownie.

The chocolate fudge cookie was excellent and I'm glad it was recommended as one of the "must-try" desserts of Sydney. Meanwhile, the chocolate twist was good but a bit boring in my opinion - it felt like something that you can get anywhere.

I loved the chai latte, served in a teapot with the leaves in an infuser. I would highly recommend letting it sit for a bit though, otherwise it is very weak. The turkish fruit iced tea was a bit odd, but it was refreshing.
Thewhereto
Kurtosh is a great little cafe for a rolled Kurtosh, essentially a pastry snack with cinnamon or other toppings. I personally think they have a Licorice taste to them too. You can also get coffees and tea and cake by the gram. Open late for that after dinner snack
Kriti
Got a birthday cake from this place and it was yumm.
Tried a variety of other cakes and all are baked to perfection.
They have a collection of tea cakes as well.Gives you a feel of being in UK while enjoying a cup of coffee/tea along with a slice of cake.
JDub
Great place for dessert and a coffee when catching up with friends, when going out on a first date or also for when relatives visit from overseas. The variety of cakes keeps you coming back for more and wanting to try a different flavor. I like the fact we can sample a variety of flavors and control the portions.

Food: the dessert have huge variance for you to choose from. It may be hard for those indecisive people. I would highly recommend the tiramisu as it have been my personal fav over and over again even tho I’ve been trying others out to make sure I have other fav but it’s so hard. It’s not so sweet which is a plus point if you’re looking after your sugar intake. It’s rich and creamy and the chocolate dusting on top really give a hint of bitterness to it.

It would be great if they’ll put the cake labels on the cake so customer wouldn’t be clueless and ask what is it.

Service : usually only 2-3 wait staff so if everyone is busy might be some wait time for you to be attended

Price: the cake are weight to price and there’s no price list of how much per/100g cost . Hence try to get receipt every time

Their opening hour is really long, especially for a cafe. The stuff there was nice.
This time I tried cheesecake and tiramisu. Cheesecake was just a normal one, no surprise, just average taste. And for their tiramisu, actually I really expected something,but..
The sponge cake was a little bit dry for me, not enough the aroma liquor, which is quite important for tiramisu cake.
I have to say, their strawberry sponge cake was really nice, but these two cakes just so so.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
This cake shop/cafe is on Crown Street. Consistency is key and had tried one their sister outlets before which was excellent.

Service is very good and lady was more than helpful. We browsed for quite a while deciding on what to get. We settled upon a Cappuccino and an Iced Mocha to drink and shared an Espresso Butter, Almond Chocolate Roulade to eat in and got a slice of Hazelnut Truffle Slab to takeaway. The lady was kind enough to keep that slice refrigerated whilst we consumed the other items. The cakes are sold by weight at a cost of $4.90/100g which means you can be as indulgent as you want to be! The cakes are top notch and taste wonderful. Drinks complimented the cake well. Amazing walked away without buying a kurtosh this time round!
The Engineer Eats
Enjoying some desserts from Kurtosh where you can choose the size of the dessert you like however small or big. The final price is charged by weight.

The strawberry pistachio cake looked great so it was triple in size compared to the baked cheesecake and peanut butter slice. We made the right choice!
Freddy Trinkett
Nice bakery-cafe which sells cake by weight.

Presentation:
There were about 12-15 different cakes on display. All looked really good. I went for the strawberry cream sponge cake.

Taste:
It tasted really good. It wasn't too sweet and the crust of the sponge had a really nice texture. because it wasn't too overly sweet, i had no problems demolishing it.

Also ordered a fruit green iced tea which was super refreshing. It was a hot day so this was much needed.

Service:
Good service. Staff were polite. However, I noticed there were quite a few vacant tables with dirty dishes which needed removing.

Location/Atmosphere:
Located on crown street in Surry Hills. Has a rustic feel to it.

Recommendation:
I definitely recommend this place. Can't wait to come back to try the other cakes :)

Cost:
For cake and drink it was approximately $11.

I have been wanting to visit this cafe for a very long time and I can’t believe what I’ve been missing out on. They are famous for their Kurtosh pastries which are made fresh to order so be prepared to wait. I was recommended the cinnamon flavour which was quite nice and I am keen to try their other flavours such as pistachio.

My favourite part of this cake shop though is the large selection of slab cakes that are sold by weight. This is such a good idea as you can try more kinds of cakes in smaller portions. My favourites are the tiramisu, espresso butter and almond roulade and the raspberry baked cheesecake which were light and delicious.
OneHungryHuman
One for the sweet tooth!! Cooked dough in the shape of a cone, oozing with Nutella that has been added in between the layers of dough!
Sickly sweet but amazing at the same time.
Selection of cakes and sweets to choose from at the counter. Something for everyone

I love their baked cheesecake (4/5): If you're after something very fluffy, light, with a hint of mousse texture and a savoury touch of cheese that reminds you of a Japanese soufflé cake than this is for you.

If you're after something darker and decadent then I recommend the Beetroot and Sour Cherry Dark Chocolate Mousse Slice (4/5): this instantly melts in the mouth with rich dark chocolate flavour and real bits of sour cherry throughout the base. I loved every bite.

The blueberry cheesecake (3/5) was ok but nothing too special.
Foodblogs
The place is like a bakery and a cafe in one.
Decor is unique and the place is quite spacious as well. You can sit inside or outside.
I love that they give you free tasting of some sweet treats :)
Tried their pistachio Kurtosh and it’s pretty good. Price is not cheap but the size is generous. They make it fresh for you so there’s a bit of a wait there.
Coffee is surprisingly awesome (their own bean).
Intrigued to try their other baked goodies next time.
NG
Most stupid ordering system for groups. You order and pay by weight, so naturally each piece is a little different, but they bring out group orders all at once with no allocation to the person who paid for it! Which means you're stuck with multiple of the same orders in different sizes but no way to figure out who's is who's without a weighing scale!!!
Eunifoodie
I love the concept of this place. You buy cakes by the gram so it’s awesome for when you just want to try a bit of everything! They have a wide range of cakes to choose from - all quite good.
Food_Rampage_AM @INSTA
Having been to kurtosh a few times, we were not expecting any unpleasant surprises when we dropped in at the one in surry hills. There is no dud per say in their offerings, pick whichever you fancy (sold by weight). If you aint sure, ask for a bite.. We grabbed their good ol tiramisu n brownies which are always a good fall back if you are bewildered by the choices. Ate those as we sauntered in the area.
Benedikta Atika
My first time trying kurtosh and now craving for more. We picked one with pistachio, and tried the non dairy chocolate sliced cake. The chimney bread was so big, I had to share it with other 2 friends. But it tasted good.

The place in surry hills is also nice. Love the ambience, a good place to catch up with friends.
Stephanie Fox
The chimney cake was amazing- highly recommend. However, the service was very slow and hardly any of the tables were cleared even though there was nobody else in the shop
Jessenia Jauw
One of my favorite bakery in town. I really like the brownie cheesecake and also the chocolate twist. Recommended place if you are looking for some cake and pastryđŸ‘ŒđŸŒ

Service (5/5): Excellent. Welcoming, friendly and quick
Food (5/5): A kurtosh from Kurtosh is a must try for any dessert lover! Shown in the photos is the pistachio version. The various other pastries and cakes at the store also go down very well
Ambience (5/5): Brick walls with wood interior make a great urban old school atmosphere. The areas where the pastries are being made is open for all to see which is awesome
Overall: Must try, worth your money
The Miniature Life
A cold winters day in Sydney, and an urge for something warm but sweet, brought us to the newly opened Kurtosh in Darling Square. The homely cafe smells like the most delectable treats, including cakes, cheesecake, tea and the thing that brings everyone in - fresh Kurtosh. What is Kurtosh?. Originating from Hungary, Kurtosh is a spit cake dessert, made similar to a funnel cake. It’s topped with sugar, nuts, cinnamon and sometimes filled with whipped cream. Here in the cafe they are made absolutely fresh!
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

Great dessert place in Surry Hills that does the classic Hungarian pastry as well as a range of other sweet pastries and cakes, we ordered the kurtosh which was authentic and came fresh and warm as well as the strawberry sponge cake, white chocolate brownie and the tiramisu, and everything tasted amazing. Would recommend for any sweet tooth!

Really cool and unique dessert bar in Surry Hills. Loved the KĂŒrtosh. Friends and I tried Nutella, cinnamon, and Nutella coconut KĂŒrtosh's. Service is friendly and welcoming! Definitely worth a stop in!

Love the chimney bread here!! It is made fresh daily and it is honestly one of the best things to start your morning with. I finished one throughout the day, it was very pleasant even when it wasn't warm and will definitely be returning to try their other toppings. My favourite is the pistachio and rose - I definitely recommend at least one try of the Kurtosh chimney bread! 😊

My photo is here from 8 months ago but where's my review? I just remember that this was nice but a little pricey but it's something different to try! Forgive me for this short and crappy review
Finally tried a Kurtosh! I've had cakes here before, but never had enough people to share this with. . (Those who follower this blog will know how long ago this post is lol). Pistachio Kurtosh-$8.50. It was doughier than I expected, and quite filling. I don't think I'm a big fan of this sort of pastry, so it was below expectations. It wasn't overly sweet since we opted for pistachios, but at times it felt like eating so doughy bread+nuts.
Leon
The cakes at Kurtosh are awesome. I tried the cookies & cream cheesecake and hazelnut truffle cake. They are not too sweet yet rich in flavour and texture. Most importantly, two slices and a coffee costs just $14. What a steal.
Nadia
Lovely little place! One of those places that I had always walked by but hadn’t been in. Had a taste of some of their cakes (so many cakes!) and the orange and olive oil cake was delicious. Ultimately, I ended up ordering the plain cinnamon Kurtosh, as it was my first time here. It was great! Next time I’ll get one of the flavoured ones :)
Ann
A very spacious cafe, very different from those small and crowd ones, loving it! Quite a range of cake choices, various flavors, looks very colorful and nice!

Loooveeee the KĂŒrtƑskalĂĄcs. KĂŒrtƑskalĂĄcsis a traditional Hungarian pastry famously known as chimney cake. This pastry is baked and rolled in chopped nuts, chocolate or spices for added texture & flavour. Best eaten when its still hot!
Hello Miss May
um, i live a minute away from KĂŒrtösh and this place, is on my fave spots in sydney. think of pretty interior, rustic furniture and beautiful tiles to greet you at the front. it's perfect for #ihavethisthingwithfloors !

a must try is definitely the Chimney Cake. my favourite is definitely the cinammon one and I always ask for nutella filling. a combo that will change your life, hehe. if you're unsure about what to have, you can always try the samples at the front.

or if chimney cakes does not fancy you, just go for the wide variety of cakes at KĂŒrtösh! pick any serving you want to, like the tiniest square or largest chunk you want, the staff will cut it for you and weigh all the sweet treats all at one go. yes, hehe, you pay by weight.

and this place has the best chai around town. served in a pot with honey on the side. mmmm!

more foodie adventure on hellomissmay.con

and find me on Instagram for cute, fun pix
@hellomissmay

It was a a bloody hot day the kurtosh baked goods lures.me in but it was the fresh iced tea that got me excited. Mint, raspberry and lemon iced tea was a great refreshing drink as.i walked up crown st

I like the way how they sell cakes. Everything was charged by weight. Basically you can just ask them how much 100g of cake looks like and how much is the price of 100g of this cake. Very simple and convenient way to purchase. Besides, all cakes look delicious and amazing. Kurtosh is the Best option of a place to enjoy your dessert. It's definitely worthy going there again. I think I ordered almond cake. The drinks were chai latte and flat white.
Shaun
Love the ambience of this Surry Hills outlet. As a cafe it's a pretty chilled place to hang out. They make a good iced tea and the coffee isn't too bad either. I thought the kurtosh was ok but my friends enjoyed it a lot more. Each to their own I guess? Nevertheless I think it's a cool and different concept of bringing in Hungarian deserts to Australia!
Andrew
We went to Kurtosh for dessert after dinner - as we've done many times before but not in a while. I must say it was very disappointing, to say the least. The girl behind the cake counter - frankly, shouldn't be there. Rude, unpleasant..... after not giving any tiny pieces to even taste or try, I just gave up and chose whatever.... poor choice 😬. Anyway, stuck through it and I think the coffee helped take the cake down. Let's get this place back to where it used to be!!!
Shubham Kedia
I really love the ambience of this place, it's a really chill vibe. They have a good variety of Kurtosh, though we had the classic cinnamon one. It's a really big roll and lasts for long, enough to fill two people after a dinner. A little tough to find the place, but when you manage to get there do pick up a KĂŒrtösh on your way out.
Mel Q
Freshly baked Kurtosh can be found here. I had the traditional cinnamon and bloody hell it was delicious. Hot and fresh, Kurtosh is a great dessert for a winter's day.

I also tried their selection of cakes including coconut mousse and salted caramel. I love the flexibility in weight/size selection and beautiful flavours.

Great customer service but it was difficult getting a seat on Sat night for my friends and I.
Helen & Michelle
We opted for 'Mum's chocolate cake' and a 'Lemon Meringue' slice - the cakes are priced by weight ($4/100g). The chocolate cake was not too dense and was quite tasty whilst the lemon meringue had an authentic lemon flavour to it and was light and not too sweet. We also tried their apricot teacake which was our personal favourite. Will be coming back soon to try some more flavours though!
Roxanne Groebel
Gorgeous cakes and pastries and amazing coffee!! Love how its open late - kos its really hard to get a good coffee on crown st after about 3pm.
Melisa
i miss this cafe a lot. they serve many selections of cakes aka desserts and they sell it per kg. yes you can weigh that cake as much as you want.. and the kurtosh is so delish. also the coffee is good ; and any other drinks are also yumm
Erika-Anne
Love this cafe!
You can choose lots of taste of cakes from showcase, as much as you can:)
They sell cake by weight. I picked up 3 different taste which were 'Cheese Cake', 'Chocolate Cake' and 'Chocolate Cookies'.

Cheese cake is my fav, not too heavy not too sweet just the right! Yummy. I should have had more.haha

All the rest were Chocolate and these were awesome too. Very rich and tasty.
Chocolate Cookies was very soft so feel like eating cake and was chocolate cream inside! I recommend all of the chocoholic!! :)

Dessert Pirate
The kurtosh is a little bit disappointed. It's a bit tough and it's very expensive. I bought some of their cakes as well which they sale per gram. Not good either.
Peter White
Industrial feel to this elementary space, reminiscent of an old butcher's shop or disused motor garage workshop. The grunge decor goes unnoticed by the eager patrons, lining up like oompah loompahs to partake of these delicacies. The hand rolled kurtosh are made in front of you, on magnificent marble bench tops, no doubt chosen for their cool, smooth surface prep. Then placed on long wooden rollers on longer skewers, baked in an odd little metal box (aka oven) that looks straight out of Orwell's Room 101 in 1984. And here is the problem. They're VERY slow to make, and the queues are long. There's only 2 staff on a busy Friday night. 15-20min wait they say. Tables are full. All a bit of a shamozzle, but nothing 1 more staff won't fix.

One of the best hot chocolates I've ever had. Warm, viscous, sweet, dark and moody. Yum. But delivered by the cashier, who leaves the throng of hopeful customers to do the mundane.

Slab cakes, unusually bought by weight, are deceptive - they look spectacular, but fail to really please. They're bland, somewhat dry, and surprisingly unexciting. They promised so much more, especially with their sheer size and artistic descriptions.

Everything is however inexpensive, so I'll be quiet.

They describe themselves as Hungarian chimney cakes, but my Hungarian aunt had never heard of them. Good marketing all the same.
The RnB Diary
A search in google reveals that Kurtosh is cylindrical pastry spirals that originated in Hungarian-speaking regions in Romania. I had never had anything from Hungary or Romania, so this is definitely exotic for me.

Kurtosh in Surry Hills is one of the franchises emerging in Sydney, selling not only the east european speciality but a range of other sweets. The cafe somehow bears little Hungarian influence except for the signature pastry. It was run and cooked by Asian staff.

I don't know if Kurtosh is baked, toasted, grilled, fried or boiled in this cafe. All I know is they set timer for 10 mins; after it went off they produced my Kurtosh from a bench top machine, all dark brown. Then it was dipped into a tray of almonds for coating. I took a bit when it was hot and finished the rest later that day. It was fine either hot or room temperature, no effect to the taste as far as I was concerned. The outside of the pastry was sugar coated which gave its crispy texture when sugar was crystallised; the pastry was about 2cm thick, therefore inside layer remained raw pastry colour. It didn't have much flavour other than sweet or depends on the topping you choose. After a few more bits it grew on me, the pastry was thick and chewy; the almonds and sugar were crunchy and crispy. It was big enough for two people to share one.

As I was waiting for my Kurtosh to be cooked, i noticed the cafe also sells a good range of sweets and offer eat in option. I won't mind coming back for other cakes and pastries, they looked very inviting.
Leesah
It is almost impossible to walk past Kurtosh without buying anything. When you can choose precisely how much cake you want, there is no excuse to not order 'just a small piece' (for scientific reasons). Of course, once you overcome that hurdle, you encounter the decision of choosing which cake from their display, and this is no easy task once you feast your eyes on the pretty slabs of cake they have on offer.

Orange almond and cranberry tea cake was a little wetter and more tart than I had hoped. Pops of cranberry really dominated this cake but I can definitely see it complimenting a cup of English Breakfast or Earl Grey. Salted caramel cake was light and mousse-like in texture. The base appeared to be a chocolate genoise and there were small pieces of fruit between the layers which was a nice surprise. Fudge cookie with white choc and peanut ganache was a dark horse. The crackly cookie looked dry and brittle but it was crisp and light in texture. My only regret was choosing the smallest one!

Our sample plate set us back $10.40. I love the concept of paying by weight as you can choose exactly what you pay for without all the extra fluffs of smeared sauces and pretty plating. My only nitpick would be that prices should be clearly marked as I had no idea how much each cake costs.

Unique in every way, this beautifully setup pastry shop doesn't promise to be only another pastry shop, they go one step further and sell authentic Turkish Pastries

Flaky and absolutely Delish, these mouthwatering morsels come in a variety of ways. I suggest you give it a go if bored with the usual suspects
OnePointFive
They sell cakes by grams! You can buy as tiny as you want. We bought brownie, tiramisu & choc cream cheese brioche to share (forgot to take photo). Brownie and choc cream cheese brioche were best eaten at room temperature or warm. Tiramisu was good too. Unfortunately we're too full to eat fresh kurtosh :(
Ferra Moans
Their machine needs cleaning.

They should preheat the cups too so your coffee doesn't come out warm...

Desserts are excellent. I tried their cheese brownie and choc something cookie.

Venue has nice ambience and is quite tidy.
Farah Huq
They have the most amazing varieties of desserts and mostly without the use of heavy creams and icings. I tried their cinnamon and nuts cake and it tasted like a pillowy baklava except for the rush of sugar syrup. Their lemon cheesecake had the perfect zing and was velvety smooth. Their only drawback is that they have a minimum limit on eftpos.
Gabbys79
Since discovering Kurtosh in Crows nest on weekend I couldn't drive past Surry hills without stopping in. I bought some cakes for a picnic tomorrow. Cakes are sold in 100grams for $4.50 I got 400grams of cinnamon walnut (the stand out in my opinion) and 200g of apricot cake. Amazing cakes I can't recommend enough
_simplypeckish
Came across this place as I was walking on Crown Street. First time having chimney cake. I've never even heard of it before. But I'm really impressed. Ordered the cinnamon one and I'm in love. Their cakes are sold by weight, so you can choose how big a slice you one!
IĆŸÄ±n Gizem Çelik
The kurtosh that ive tried was delicious. The portion is pretty big so its better to share it with a friend. Nice place. Friendly staff. Must try.
Iwan W
I really enjoy the cakes. So good that you are able to taste the cakes before you buy by weight. Love the vibe of the place. Tiramisu was definitely my favourite.
Princess_Porky
Have only ever eaten the pistachio kurtosh here. It's so good that I can't order anything else!! Crusty, chewy and straight out of the baking machine, it's warm too (as its baked to order). So yummy.
Xinzhe Zhao
It's an amazing places. They will cut the cakes as the size as u want and then weight them which makes it possible that u can try almost every cakes u want at one time! What's more, I love the KĂŒrtosh soooo much! It's fresh hand-made just in front of u a bit crispy and soft! They also have pies which are not sweet~ love it! The cookie is a bit too sweet and heavy with peanut butter. Will go again and recommend to friends absolutely!
Tegan SabbAh
This place has great little desserts! I fell in love with their peanut butter chocolate ganache and rhubarb crumble. I also tried the pina colada brioche it was very moorish. They do good coffee, I only wish the chairs they used had backs and didn't look like miniature furniture.
Ivan Lim
That kurtosh crunchy outside and very soft inside. Try the cinnamon roll. And baked cheese cake real yum. When u come to surry hills, come and visit. Worthed to try
The Very Hungry Katerpilla
Hungarian chimney cakes and buying cake in any amount (even if it is a sliver) are the draw cards here, but my personal picks are the iced coffee using white chocolate ganache, and the savoury pastries.

My first kurtosh was the Nutella one, and when I first unravelled it I was all "Where the f‱ck is the nutella, b‱tch?!"*, when we realised it was WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE CURLY CHIMNEY! Woh... Spin out! It was fun and not too sweet I probably would have preferred more nutella. It was soft with a nice crusty and crunchy crust, and initially tasted like raisins!?

The more traditional cinnamon kurtosh was rolled in sugar and cinnamon. I think I enjoy unravelling them more than eating them, but they're fun and something different.

Dobosh torte. Probably should have asked what it was before ordering it based on the cute sounding name. Turns out it was a layered vanilla sponge with chocolate buttercream, and it was hard and dry, mega fail.

The two savoury pastries I tried: spinach and ricotta bureka and a spanish artichoke & sundried tomato bureka.
Lovely pastry flakes away, definitely preferred the spanish artichoke & sundried tomato bureka (really gorgeous sweet sundried tomato tang) over the spinach & ricotta bureka (creamy and delicious), but both were great little nibblies.

My iced coffee was magical. The girl behind the counter warned me that they use white chocolate ganache so it is sweeter than a normal iced coffee, but I wanted to try it out of curiosity (never heard of white chocolate ganache in iced coffee before). Did not regret it, was not too sweet, as it was tempered perfectly by the coffee. Delicious.
Be warned, because everything else is quite sweet, if you eat cake and whatnot before taking a sip of your iced coffee, your iced coffee may taste bland due to your cake-covered-tongue, so I recommend having a few sips before eating something sweet or cleanse your palette with water!

The triple choc cookie with its shiny surface and deep cracks was just so pretty. It was pretty nice too, crunchy and crumbly, quite rich and sweet.

A nice place to sit and people watch.

*I didn't really say that.
Orange_tree
Kurtosh is one of the few cafes in Sydney that stays open late for coffee and dessert. I'm always drawn in by the delicious-looking cakes behind the counter and of course, the non-stop rotating chimney cakes. The chimney cakes are best when they're hot and fresh. However, I'm usually disappointed with the cakes as they're either too dry or too sweet, and in a lot of cases, both. It's great that you can buy only as much as you want, but be aware that the price per 100g isn't that cheap to start with and can rack up quite quickly.

Delicious Hungarian treat!! I get three of the cinnamon almost every time I'm there 😅 one to devour at the shop, two to take home. Friendly staff and about a 5min walk from Kings Cross Station :) Highly recommend!!

Mixed feelings. The cinnamon & pistachio Kurtosh are great, a real treat warm, & even nice cold if there's any left. Way better than donuts - you get that donut-like fix without the spongy fatty regrets. The orange & olive oil cake is sweet but addictive, & the coffee is OK.

However the organisation of the Surry Hills shop needs to smarten up.

- Made a special trip here one weekend, timed for their 8:00 am opening. Just needed to grab some takeaway cake & go. At 8:15 the person inside wouldn't open the door. When she finally did, explained that she was just the baker & her supervisor wasn't there yet, & couldn't sell anything till she arrived. Left empty-handed.

- Everywhere can have a glitch, but the next time I went - about 8:30am this time to be safe - I ordered a Kurtosh & they were initially really reluctant to make one since they weren't ready to make them yet. Still Ok, I was happy to wait.

But then I bought over $40 (!!) worth of cakes & since there were no samples out yet, I asked for a small taste of one of the others because I was thinking of buying more, and she refused outright & said, 'No samples!'. So they have evidently stopped their tasting sample policy. Backfires on them, because if I like a sample I buy heaps of it again & again. I've spent huge amounts on the orange cake & would never have even tried it without the first sample.

This sounds like picky ranting, but it's disappointing when a really good unique food product is in the hands of uncaring people. Just set expectations properly - change the times on your sign, or have a sign saying what's available when. And don't be so mean and refuse to give samples, when the other branches always gladly do so. I won't be back to this branch - at least there's Darlinghurst...

5.0 for the Kurtosh, 1.0 for the Surry Hills branch.

Tried the cinnamon kurtosh and it was so lovely. Beautifully warm and fresh from the oven. It was nicely crispy on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside. The staff were nice too. Will be coming back!

For a delicious afternoon snack, we headed to Kurtosh in Surry Hills to sample some of their sweet treats and of course, the famous Kurtosh bread! We chose a Cinnamon Kurtosh, which was a crispy golden baked bread scroll coated in sugar and cinnamon topping. It was perfectly sweet and balanced with the slightly spiced bread, and toasty warm, even in the takeaway bag! We especially enjoyed the unique shape, which made it easy to tear off small pieces from the swirl and snack on them as we went.

Very pleasant cafe atmosphere, European style patisserie, rustic in nature. They make and serve cakes like no one else in Sydney, they definitely have a unique selling point. Cakes are made and displayed on huge slabs, and you pay per gram, they just cut out a slice to your liking.

I had the Tiramisu, it was tasty, I enjoyed it, but have had better, don't think they are trying to please fine dinners, everything I've had there I've enjoyed.

I ordered a hot chocolate, it was nice, but took forever for the barista to make, he didn't seem to be in any hurry.

The Pistachio KĂŒrtosh is my favourite with the hint of rose and the crunch of the melted sugar paired with the soft bread is delicious! The Cinnamon is good but I didn't enjoy the Hazelnut unfortunately.

So I decided to try Kurtosh because I've been hearing a lot about it. Verdict- it's pretty good, it's a bit like a donut but crunchy. Make sure you you have time when you order a Kurtosh because they make it fresh and it takes 15 mins for it to be baked. I didn't know that when I wanted mine as a take away.

On display were massive slabs of tempting cakes and decadent slices, and of course, their famous KĂŒrtƑskalĂĄcs (just called KĂŒrtƑsh). The waitress looking after the counter was wonderfully friendly and helped us in the dessert-decision-making process. I soon found out that KĂŒrtosh’s pricing is by weight basis, not by slice, which is really great news as you can have a small sliver of every cake there if you feel like it! It allowed you to try more, which we did.

They were also very generous with their testers!! There were plates filled with large mouthful size pieces of different cakes to try. Who doesn’t love a bit of a taste test!

Using my hands like you would when framing a photograph, I asked for slices “ahh about this big?” and the waitress happily sorted out our order. We got a slice of the Tiramisu, Peanut butter and Chocolate Ganache slab and the Baked Raspberry Cheesecake. They were all priced at $4.50 per 100g.

We also got a KĂŒrtƑsh! I asked the waitress which flavour would be best to have for your first ever KĂŒrtƑsh and she said the classic cinnamon flavour was the way to go, although the Nutella one did come a close second in her mind! A cinnamon chimney roof was ordered for $7.50 and was baked fresh while we waited at our table.

We tried Lemon Crunch Cheesecake and Nutella Kurtosh. If you are some1 who love Nutella or chocolate, you would definitely love Nutella Kurtosh!! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside filled with Nutella and it is hollow. It is better to share with some1 because it is quite rich. Tasty

Great tasting desserts fresh from the oven that smell so good they reel you in. The coffee is good. Prices are decent and staff are friendly.

Delicious! Try the Nutella kurtosh. Even their coffees and hot chocolates are great. Small cakes are also amazing.. I tried a strawberry and coconut cake, yumm. On another occasion, I tried a cookies and cream Oreo cheesecake, which was unfortunately quite substandard. Kurtosh all the way though!

Caramelize your tastebuds with freshly baked and aromatic candied hazelnut kurtosh to satisfy that sweet indulgence in an extremely cosy coffee shop. As one of the top dessert and coffee locations, Kurtosh is definitely ideal for a winter’s evening as you become drawn to the warm fragrance of their freshly made pastries.

#kningjaeats Hungarian chimney cake. I've been meaning to visit this place for so long and I finally had the chance to indulge in the delicious candied hazelnut kurtosh! I definitely enjoyed the free samples they had on offer and it was great having our Kurtosh freshly made- it literally melted in our mouths.

So satisyfing, love my nutella kurtosh with chai tea! Probably my favourite place for dessert in Sydney. Has a great relaxed feel, the staff are really nice and the Kurtosh is amazing.
I love the cinnamon one but the standout is the nutella one. Made fresh it arrives hot to your table and warm nutella is oozing from the layers of warm, buttery, spiralled sweet bread. The loose leaf teas are a great accompaniment. My favourite is chai, comes in a cool little teapot and I get honey and milk on the side. Wide selection of cakes available as well, all pretty good but not as nice as the Kurtosh. Great place to chill, have a chat and go after a crown street dinner as its open late and there's plenty of seating inside. Keep up the great work!

Their website already said it all. The kurtosh served hot, because it's made to order. We ordered their nutella kurtosh, and it was so good! Do you remember that I said that I was full before? Yes, I'm still full, but I can't stop reaching for more!

So, these are kĂŒrtƑs kalĂĄcs , also known as chimney cakes, sold at KĂŒrtƑsh . They are traditional Hungarian pastries that are crispy on the outside, soft on the inner walls and hollow on the inside. These funky looking chimneys are not the only things sold at KĂŒrtƑsh – they have a huge variety of cakes sold “by weight” here! The kĂŒrtƑs kalĂĄcs making area is right by the door. It’s quite fascinating seeing these little chimneys being made from scratch. I had never had a kĂŒrtƑs kalĂĄcs before in my life, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they cut up pieces of kĂŒrtƑs kalĂĄcs for their customers to try. Randomly selected cakes were also available for trying. I like their generosity.

We hit up Kurtosh next. After a nice walk around the block to aid digestion. The chimney cakes definitely looked very aesthetically pleasing. Even better, they had samples for us to try. We opted for the pistachio one and tbh I guess we're a bit shallow because it didn't really taste like much. Oh well appearances do matter in food world.

What is a Kurtosh? The name Kurtosh comes from Kurtoskalacs, a cylindrical Hungarian pastry with a crispy, hard outside and a soft, moist inner wall. The dough is coiled around a large rolling pin and then cooked. It is then rolled in different toppings including cinnamon, coconut, chocolate, pistachio, hazelnuts or almonds.

Haha yes my daily life revolves around food, but a new thing I do - well I've only done it twice - is giving myself quality "me-time" with a day out, getting everything I want/need to do done and just feeling accomplished and at ease by the end of it. I've done this the past two times I've gone back home and I really enjoy it. I find it builds my confidence, is way more productive than going out with friends and also gives me a inner sense of peace, without the fatigue I always feel with a big day out/socialising (yes I'm an introvert). Kurtosh: So kurtosh is a traditional Hungarian pastry (also known as a chimney cake), that's meant to be crispy & flaky on the outside while soft on the inside. Other than this signature bread, they also make other desserts and drinks. Plus, they have several locations around Sydney.
The Hedonist Life
There are a lot of places to get good coffee (so I hear, I don’t drink that poison) in Darlinghurst and a lot of places to get good cake but not that many places where you can get the two together. So its good to see Kurtosh open their latest outpost just up the road from me on Victoria Street.

A little gem, down the road away from the ‘trendy’ end of Crown Street in Surry Hills. This cafe is the second in the kĂŒrtösh family – the first one located at The Spot, St Pauls Street, in Randwick. I had been to the Randwick cafe several times on a late night hunt for cake. The amazing thing is that the cake is sold by WEIGHT! This means you don’t have to labour away at that overly-plump slab of cake that wasn’t that great to begin with – choose smaller portions and have a taste of several different cakes – they all look amazing anyway. Unfortunately it seems like not many have discovered this cafe yet – only two tables (including ours) was filled in a cafe that could easily accommodate 30-40 people. Get in fast and eat ALLLLL THE CAAAKE!
Take Me To Foodie Heaven
Kurtosh comes from KĂŒrtƑskalĂĄcs, a traditional Hungarian pastry known as the chimney cake because it looks like a chimney! The cylindrical yeast pastry consists of a marriage of caramelised crispy flaky outer with soft inner walls and you can find them sold as street snacks from carts in Hungary. One step inside and you get to see the chef in action using a giant rolling pin and a thin ribbon of dough, skillfully coiling the dough around the rolling pin ready to be baked to sweet golden full of goodness...

I loved the cinnamon but keep in mind this is definitely a savoury dessert unless you pick the ones coated in chocolate. I personally can’t wait to come back and check out all the other flavours, they have different variations including a hazelnut one which looked really nice and other desserts available.
Queen Of Bad Timing
Cakes purchased by weight can be a dangerous thing, especially for cakes as tasty as these. I love the idea of this and really wish we had places like this in Perth.
The Sneaky Pigeon
This homey café is about one thing - Delicious, passed-down-from-mama recipe pastries and cakes. They're pretty proud of their house specialty - the twisty Hungarian pastry called (funnily), Kurtosh. It's quite good....

Everything is delicious at this little bakery!

Short for kĂŒrtƑskalĂĄc; a kĂŒrtƑsh is chimney-like baked pastry originating from Hungary, hollow and coated on the outside with delectable coatings, from crushed pistachios and almonds to coconut and cinnamon sugar. Interior of KĂŒrtƑsh, Crown Street, Surry Hills The Surry Hills store is one of four for the KĂŒrtƑsh brand (their original store in Randwick was followed by Surry Hills, Crows Nest and now Darlinghurst). Friendly service from the staff and they have tastings of some of their cakes which tempted us to buy some to take home like their blondie, mums chocolate cake and caramel and pecan cake which were all delicious and rich! Glad we got a small piece of each.
