Decided to eat at this popular Sydney institution. In the area so why not!
The decor had a church feel. Have a feeling a church once stood there. Can get busy so it's wise to book a table.
My mates and I got a meat and seafood platter for two and the black risotto (or crni rizot). Meat and seafood was pretty much what you would expect. Everything has salt, olive oil, lemon and parsley.
But the seafood risotto... WAS THE BOMB! SO DELICIOUS! The dish to eat at this establishment! Apparently their schnitzel is also good. Not that I would know.
The restaurant is slightly on the pricey side. But a great place for seafood and seafood obsessed foodies like me! PS they also have list and a dessert menu.
Fantastic schnitzel. If you look for refined schnitzel that doesn’t feel too heavy this is the place to go. You will get a tasty rice and fresh veggies with it.
My wife and I wandered in from the street. The staff were friendly. Had a very nice feel. We both ordered the Chicken and Bacon Rissoto which was exceptional. About to order the Tiramisu. Come here. This is a groovy place. Get into it.

Sir and M'Lady Dine Out is a restaurant, travel, bar and food journey across Australia and the world. Come with our group as we eat, drink, holiday and cook our way through life. Saturday, 18 July 2015. THE ORIGINAL BALKAN - DARLINGHURST, SYDNEY. The Original Balkan. Darlinghurst, SydneyThe Original Balkan has been around for 50 years - yes 50! That's a very long time for any business let alone a restaurant.
Had a seafood and meat platter for two with wine with a voucher. No problems with booking a table on the weekend. All the food was perfectly cooked, tasty and great value for money. The octopus was the 2nd best I have ever had.

Darlinghurst, SydneyThe Original Balkan has been around for 50 years - yes 50! That's a very long time for any business let alone a restaurant. Whilst it has moved a short distance to its current location a few years ago - it's still the same familiar place - same food and same staff. The restaurant has a comfortable, homely feel to it. It still looks and feels like a restaurant though. It's current location was once part of a church, and this gives the feel of space with its high ceilings, exposed beams and arches.
Amazing Eastern European food, aka, meat on meat with a side of meat... This Croatian establishment is a good stable if you are after a no fuss hearty meal. On the weekends the restaurant fills with Croatians and they sing and dance to live music and all really seem to enjoy themselves as if they were back in the home land. Great staff, great food, well priced.
The fish soup on clear broth is the standout for me as a starter.
There is a second restaurant in the area with the same name on Oxford st but my preference is the original. Same family different experience.
Simply the best Balkan cuisine!. I've travelled Eastern Europe and tasted the finest Chevapi in its native homeland of Bosnia, and I have struggled to taste another to compliment the flavours of the Balkans within the shores of Australia.. Until I was recommended by a friend to this restaurant! The Chevapi is awesome as is most of the other meat dishes on the menu! Quite a popular restaurant and i know why, it has simply the best BBQ I've had in a long time!!
Recently moved from Oxford St to nearby Crown St, this restaurant is as good as ever. Friendly staff, great food and service, and a good night out. A regular evening out in Sydney always starts here..
I've been going there since 1992 and it's the best place for a hearty meal. Staff are always polite and I have no hesitation ever in going back.
Great schnitzel and Cabbage/Potato salad. Just up the road from Verona Cinema lies the iconic Balkan Seafood Restaurant. Recently fitted out following a fire, John, the owner, sat on the pavement eating a large and juicy spatchcock and salad, while we tucked in to 2 Vienna Schnitzels, a Bean Soup and a Grilled Lamb Cutlet plate. All very hearty and large meals. Average price per main - about $22 to $25 per plate. Good, old style, fresh, reliable meals. The potato and cabbage salad I got instead of my veggies with the Schnitzel was more than ample. One of the friends with whom I was dining has been going here reliably for 40 years!! Why not for reliably good quality tucker. We'll return but for the spatchcock which the boss knew was a great meal, next time. GregFresser
Fantastic food & good service. Huge portions and well priced, decent atmosphere..
Hearty food. This is the food I grew up on. It's all hearty, honest generous food and without the frills. We've been coming here for years and always look forward to returning.
The schnitzel is possibly the best I've eaten, sorry Mum, and the chevapcici as moist as ever. All your grilled meat dishes come with the traditional potato salad and cabbage salad. Delish!
