Very very very satisfied with this meal!
The pork katsu sandwich was very delicious! (4.7/5) Crunchy outside and soft and thick inside! (Although I think it would taste better if the pork skin could be abit more crunchier and thicker?)
Soft shell crab burger (4.5/5)
This little gem is tucked away from the busy bustling city. Located in the middle of a seemingly residential area in Redfern, stood a cosy little cafe. What I love about most in this cafe was the ambiance alfresco. I like the fact that this place seem somewhat like a terrace house-made-into-cafe. There's a big bright green tree/plant shadowing the seats and tables. I like how the sun peaks thru it's leaves. It kinda gives a quiet, peaceful vibe. Their menu is quite extraordinary with a Japanese twist, particularly their Japanese classic omurice, it was very good! Although, sad to say the matcha french toast was a bit of a let down for me. It was a bit bland for me and was just not enjoyable to eat (althought very instagramable). I don't think I was able to finish the whole thing... Price is pretty decent, not expensive at all, and the staff were all nice, nothing really stood out for me but the ambiance and location, really. :)
Super nice and cosy cafe! The katsu sandwich was definitely a winner- crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, definitely recommend it. The omurice was quite interesting with egg on the outside and rice with a tomatoey sauce on the inside with ham and peas which actually worked quite well. Matcha lamington was a huge let down- rather bland and dry. Overall a nice cafe. Prices were very decent as well, not overpriced at all.
Now i understand why Cafe Oratnek is one of the best brunch destination in Sydney
From the start, absolutely love their booking system, just put your name and number and they send you a text when the table is ready, and you can also see how many table are ahead of you. We ordered all the signatures, the pork katsu was spot on, the ebi pasta is definitely our favorite, and the omurice is probably the best out of all the place i’ve had. I really love their take on traditional western dish with a twist of asian ingredients and flavor. And the matcha tiramisu is a home run, the cake itself is so moist, i love how the bitter of matcha powder combine with a fairly sweet cream. And the staffs was very lovely, would definitely come back another time 💖
Highlight of the cafe - Pork Katsu sandwich and Hayashi rice 🤤 Also pictured is the Ebi pasta and Berry Iced Tea. The sandwich was so good I wish I ordered x2 of them and the Hayashi rice was something I've never tried before, but so glad I did 👏🏼
This is a COVID-19 takeaway review. Really enjoyed the mentaiko pasta. Pork katsu sandwich was also yum. Didn't like the beef rice as much but overall a great meal. Would recommend and keen to go back.
A different choice from your regular / standard cafe. Some unusual items but you just need to give the banana chips a go.
Love this Japanese fusion cafe! All the foods are so on point. The omurice is a must try which is tomato fried rice wrapped in a fluffy omelette. Their pork katsu bread is juicy and the bread is soft. Seafood pasta is delicious as well that you wouldn’t get enough of it. Their wagyu is so tender and well cooked with the sauce. I will definitely come back again during my next visit in Sydney.
The desserts here are very nice! And I love the atmosphere around here, very friendly and peaceful!
Excellent customer service !! Must try Matcha Lamington - moist and lots of coconut flavour xx
Been there with my friends. As a huge fan of matcha, have to say that the matcha tiramisu was incredibly amazing. The flavour has the perfect ratio of sweet and bitterness and the texture was so wonderfully great. The omelette rice was also a must try. Not an easy spot to find but the plus side is really quite and soothing ambience.
This cafe is a famous one on instagram. The shop locates in Redfern but is also close to Central. It’s a house where its garden is used as outdoor seating.
[Miso Glazed boneless bbq beef belly]$24
Very special dish. A piece of beef on top of salad. The salad sauce is sour. Nice innovation.
[Granola]
Served with honey. Fruit are pretty fresh. The best of all from my opinion.
🍵Matcha related products are most popular. However they do let me down this time.
[Matcha French toast] $16
Neither good-looking nor tasty. The toast looks pretty BLACK and soft.
[Matcha Lamington] $6
Very dry. I should have tried their Matcha tiramisu instead.
Still busy during the late arvo, this Asian inspired cafe has sweet treats and food. I didn’t get to try any of the drinks or main meals as I only went for the infamous Matcha Tiramisu and Matcha Lamington.
I must say the matcha tiramisu was nice and moist with each layer perfectly stacked and infused with matcha, but it wasn’t anything memorable for me. The Lamington was also very basic. The sponge cake was a little dry and the matcha powder coating, which is obviously dry on its own, didn’t make it any better. Unfortunately I had expected too much from these desserts and was let down a little. I would love to come back for food and drinks though!
Had nice enjoyable lunch here, can be packed at times but worth the wait. We had the ochazuke which was quite nice more of a comfort food for asian I would say, and the ebi pasta was great!
The omurice was awesome until I hit the excessively creamy sauce - feels like it could be spread out more evenly to avoid being overwhelmed by the richness.
The matcha tiramisu was a little dry.
I’m so happy a friend brought me here. Everything tasted delightful and I’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu! But I’ll probably order the matcha tiramisu again!
Relaxing vibe. Amazing apple muffin. Very cinnamoney. Has this bits of crunchy cookie toppings which are a delightful. Strong coffee. And if you love the colour mint!!
This cafe has a beautiful yard and I’d like to sit there but it was full. So I had my inside seat and delicious food. The matcha milk shake was quite thick which was good but it was a bit hard to use the paper straw they provide. The metal one would be better in my opinion. The matcha tiramisu was good, not too sweet and the taste was soft. The kobe rice was a bit expensive but the mix of rice, wagyu, onion, cheese and sauce was just wonderful.
Went there over the weekend and waited for 1 hour for the queue. The food is mainly the Japanese food mix with a bit of western style. The fried rice covered with omelette is amazing as well as their other rice.
I went there on a Monday noon to avoid long queuing and was very satisfy with the visit. Ordered three dishes and all of them were delicious, especially the pasta. Their staffs are extremely friendly and helpful. The only thing I dislike was the coffee, iced latte tasted weird but it could only be my cup. I’d ordered the matcha cake next time but overall it was a very pleasant experience. I highly recommend this place!!
Collectively I’ll believe was a positive experience. We order 2 dishes and a a Matcha late by the way very good. Of the two plates the one I didn’t like was the pork in the old stale white bread, very mediocre. The other one corn fritters alike was beautiful. Waitress was fantastic 100 point for an exceptional experience, a French girl. The girl in the till annoyed I preferred notes than coins. Anyway was all for tips, (I don’t like tipping with coins) is like beggar type. I’ll return yes to try something else.
It was a little bit hard to spot this cafe but they definitely have the best port katsu sandwich in Sydney (crunchy and juicy!). Also loved Kobe Hayashi rice but can be a little overwhelming with the amount of cheese. The Matcha tiramisu is a highly recommended dessert from me :P It’s not too sweet, but full of rich greentea flavour and the layers fit well altogether. Would love to revisit this cafe sometimes!
This is the place that you will get one of the best katso sando. The bread is super soft and the meat super juicy. It’s located in a suburban area of Sydney. So the restaurant looks like someone’s home. Which is quite cosy
Love the atmosphere here. Food was delicious. Great for sharing with a group of people. Highly recommend. Was too full to try the tiramisu but definitely coming back for it!
Loved the ambience, it has a very homely feel to it.
Although the outdoor area it a bit chilly today.
The food was satisfying especially the okonomiyaki that we tried. The blend of pumpkin and wasabi was truly intriguing.
The pork katsu however was a let down. I dindt like that mustard was used and would prefer maybe a spicy mayo kinda Sause. Given that most people hyped up the katsu pork, it wasn’t really up to standard.
The sweet potato chips was good and an interesting way to enjoy sweet potato! Definitely must try.
Overall I would give this shop a 4 for food and ambience. However i had a very negative experience with one of the waiters, she was unwelcoming and inflexible. But to be fair, I opted most of that critic out.
This converted house has great character and a pleasant surrounding. Not hard to find parking around which is a plus.
Food is good and the Japanese inspired menu is exciting. The tiramisu and wagyu rice were the highlights for us. However the matcha pancakes were not to our taste and definitely don't expect your traditional pancakes (see the black blocks of bread in photo).
Very nice neighborhood. The restaurant is low key and would be very nice to stay for an afternoon when there are not many people. During the weekend, it is very busy. The waitresses are all very nice and friendly. But there were so many people, it was challenging for them to look after so many customers without being stressed I guess. the food was decent. Slightly salty for my taste. The cake is my type. Spongy and not very sweet. Coffee is good quality as well. The coffee machine is also Mocha coloured-:).
Lovely little place that was very popular (a little bit of a wait before we could be seated). The food was lovely with generous portions. :-)
Cafe Oratnek is a popular cafe in Redfern with good food and service. Pictured: Japanese linguine (that yolk porn!), pork fillet katsu sandwich and matcha latte.
Tried their famous sandwiches. The chicken katsu had great quality chicken and batter and Japanese flavours but it had a very thick piece of chicken and had been sliced horizontally across a roll, leaving three pieces that were very difficult to eat. The teriyaki chicken sandwich was perhaps better, thinner (and very tasty) chicken making it slightly easier to eat (still very messy due to avocado and egg) and with a good combination of ingredients, except that teriyaki did not seem to contribute very much at all to the overall flavour. Both had pretty standard bread but still good sandwiches.
Cafe Oratnek is a cute little 25 seat cafe housed in a former terrace house residence in Redfern. It’s owned by chef Kentaro “Kenny” Takayama (ex Bills, Darlinghurst), who set out to open a cafe that espoused simplicity, quality and authenticity.
Got the Ochazuka, which I thought was quite unusual (basically wet rice) and an interesting concept (pouring tea yourself into the rice). It tasted a bit bland, but after adding some salt and pepper, it tasted much better. The portion size was also a bit disappointing but worth trying if you haven't before. We also got a matcha cake, but we thought there was too much matcha powder on the cake for our liking but the cake itself tasted really good! The cafe gets quite packed around 12pm (we had to wait approx 20mins) and there was still a line when we left (around 2pm) so prepare yourself for a wait!
After a very long queue, I had this egg rice which was a very large portion and yummy! While this place has a weird queuing system. Very unclear about whether should get a ticket first or just queue for a table. The dog friendly option is a magnet to me. Friendly staff and prompt service.
Situated in an old terrace with seating inside and out. Great fusion brunch menu. Just be sure to come early to skip the queue.
Tip: sit indoors if you don't want flies and falling leaves to drop on to your food or long queues of people starring at you.
Beautiful cafe with great food. My partner and I tried the Okonomiyaki and the Kobe Hayashi Rice paired with a Hojicha thickshake and Matcha latte. Both dishes were beautifully displayed and the taste was rich and flavorful. Both drinks were bold but not overpowering leading to a more enjoyable experience with every sip. I highly recommend Cafe Oratnek if you're looking for a contemporary take on traditional Japanese cuisine.
Favorite cafe in sydney!
Have been here regularly since theyve opened and they never fail to deliver ❤
Ordee ANYTHING. will guarantee that it'd be amazing.
Omurice, katsu sandwich, mentaiko fettucine, crab burger, matcha millefillue / lamington / tiramisu... ❤
The food here was awesome! I had the cold soba salad, the flavouring was just nice with the light wasabi taste, we ordered a second one of the same dish! My friends had prawn linguine, mentaiko pasta and beef belly. They were all delicious with a nice Japanese touch. The match latte and hojicha latte also very nice and not too sweet. Service very friendly!!
Four of us Came in on a Sunday morning - lucky we had the last available table. Both mocha and hojicha latte are not sweetened (which is rare) and full of flavour. We ordered two jp pasta, one green tea soba salad and one grilled beef belly - all are good and The soba is our favourite! Definitely will coma back and a well worth five star :)
It’s the best French toast I have ever tried.
Without fancy decoration, pragmatic ingredients and authentic match sauces are the highlights of their signature French toast.
Decent decor and friendly staff are another highlights.
I was pleased that their Matcha 🍵 latte doesn’t contain added sugar, which means the matcha power is right and real. Plus, I do love their latte arts.
Overall five star 🌟
Thanks Mr. Guo Guorium🧪
Lovingly made breakfast! Filling, perfect portion for us. Soothing ambience that takes you away from the morning rush for a while. Food is flavorful and well presented. Coffee art is great! Must try if you fancy some matcha infused delights! Xihuahua 🐶
Loved the okonomiyaki. Was so flavorful. The omrice was really good too. The fried rice inside was done so well. The chips were crunchy but soft on the inside. The portions were really large and reasonably price. Would definitely recommend!
Cafe Oratnek was so good and flavourful, I love asian fusion and this cafe did deliver! It exceeded my expectations greatly.. good atmosphere but can get busy on a Sunday. We made it just before closing time and it was still quite busy, not a major issue.
The food looks amazing, I order mushroom toast and green tea tiramisu. The dessert is perfect for me, not too sweet and have three different layers, the syrup is a little bit strong with cover the flavor of green tea cream layer. However, I’m a little disappointed at main dish, too salty for me
I really enjoyed Cafe Oratnek! Friendly service and great location. Eating area is quite small but cosy feel to it. Highlight was the matcha tiramisu which I highly recommend. Omi rice was second favourite and then the shakshuka. The downside I felt was the matcha thick shake that was lacking in thickness and flavour. It tasted more milk with a hint of matcha. Overall I would love to visit these guys again to try their matcha french toast and breakfast burger!
!!!!!!! Overwhelming
I went there with my friends and everyone was beyond satisfied and were overjoyed. Then I decided to go again with my parents and they were absolutely so ecstatic to the point we took away extra food just to try more items on the menu!
The Australian and Asian influenced food is absolutely innovative, mesmerising and luscious! It is one of the places in Sydney absolutely recommended.
The home feel environment was so relaxing and definitely tranquilised my mood ☺️☺️ such a great place to catch up!!
I positively recommend this exceptional cafe ❤️
Friendly staffs and great place to have brunch with friends. Avoid sitting outside when windy. Omurice recommended, mocha french toast was a little bit bitter.
A small, cafe in a quiet area which really draws in a weekend brunch crowd. It’s a fusion of Japanese and weather dishes here.
The twist on the French classic croque Madame was delicious.
Matcha , coconut cream bircher muesli, nuts seeds, autumn plum compote, yoghurt and blue berries. The hojicha latte was excellent, never had one before, I’m addicted! I love 💖checking out new places for brunch ☀️
I highly recommend this place. The food was tasty and delicious. Prawn pasta is so good!!
If you like bitter taste of matcha, then matcha latte would be the good choice for you.
I definitely will go back to this place to have lunch!!!
We almost missed this place because at first glance it really looks like an average home in Redfern, it’s located in a very residential area. This is a cozy place with indoor and outdoor seating☺️☺️
Service is also very easygoing and speedy 👍🏻👍🏻 The food has a homemade feeling to them which I found comforting ❤️
I feel like the matcha tiramisu and lamington could be easily mixed up though, most of the photos you see (with the green layers on the inside) are the tiramisu, which I guess should be obvious but we accidentally got the lamington instead 😂😂
Had the ochazuke, hot yuzu lemonade, and white chocolate match fondue- all of which was super delicious! The ochazuke in particular was insanely good. Fairly reasonable prices for great food and nice service!
It took us three trips to commit the experience of Café Oratnek to paper but the wait is definitely worthwhile. Not only are we able to share with you their all-time favourite brunch dishes but also a few new additions launched this winter. It won’t be a surprise that Café Oratnek ranks top of many brunch-goers’ favourite Japanese cafés in Sydney. Its Matcha drinks and sweets took Sydney by storm when it opened in 2015. Matcha Lamington, Matcha tiramisu, Matcha muffins, Matcha pancakes and that jaw-dropping Matcha latte not only provide some of Sydney’s most Instagrammed images but also helped define the cult cafe. After almost three years, these crowd pleasers are still best sellers.
This cafe is hidden away in the streets of Redfern and has a homely vibe. The food was tasty, coffee was great and matcha tiramisu... amazing! The only letdown is the tiny portion sizes on some of the meals such as the Ochazuke and the tiramisu.
Ordered the soft shell crab burger with wasabi tartare sauce and a matcha tiramisu. The tartare dressing paired with the crab was amazing! It did not disappoint at all and even the fries had that perfect crunch. The matcha tiramisu was also lovely, although it turns out I much prefer traditional tiramisu. Piece of advice though... you may want to share the tiramisu because it can get a bit heavy even though it doesn’t look it.
This is a really quiet café in the middle of Redfern, admist the suburban life. The café has a nice outfoor area, which we chose to sit at as the inside had poor lighting.
I really enjoyed the food there. I ordered the Ochazhuke from the breakfast menu and my friend ordered the Shakshuka. The ochazhuke involves pouring green tea over cooked and seasoned rice. The green tea was presented very nicely in a transparent teapot. However, the dish was SO SO SO tiny. It was finished in no time. Sadly, I found a piece of clothing fur in the dish, and the restaurant was nice enough to offer complimentary dessert. I chose the matcha tiramisu, which was spectacular- super juicy and had great layering.
Would definitely come back to try the lunch menu!
Where do I even begin to start? Cozy interior and minimalist decor aside, cafe oratnek has been one of my favourite spots so far - I never knew fusion was so exciting. A favourite of ours was the ochazuke, tea on rice, which was light and really refreshing. The linguine was also done well, and their matcha toast was !!! The staff were also very friendly, and I can’t wait to go back.
Like the food here! The staff are so nice and the food is delicious! Very quiet place but esay to find.... The rice and cake are yummy and you also need to try the drink!
Love the Japanese inspired dishes! Always a suggestion when meeting up with friends, and quite easy parking in the area. I love all things Matcha, so if you do too, you should definitely come!
The menu at Cafe Oratnek is definitely one of a kind. The Japanese inspired meals and amazing coffee, is something I’d definitely keep coming back to. FYI, the katsu sandwich is definitely worth the 15 min wait.
The matcha and white chocolate brownie was too dry n dense, its best to go with a hot coffee to cut it down.
The matcha lamington was just average.
The matcha tiramisu was so good and the best out of these dessert.
The pork katsu sandwich was so good but i feel like they should cut it again since our one was really chewy n hard to bite it.
The yakitori chicken burger was also good as well.
Overall service was really good n the food came really quick even though it was fully pack.
Lovely atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seats. We went right around lunch time on Saturday. Wait wasn’t too long, 10-15 mins. Matcha lamington was not too sweet just right :) Ebi pasta, shiso was a nice Japanese touch.
Croque Madame was so flavorful and satisfying with three kinds of cheeses. We wanted to order Matcha Tiramisu and Bircher Muesli but both were sold out! I will come back for that and also want to try the Japanese Shakshuka, Ebi Pasta and Omurice. They all looked really tempting and big portion. Will definitely recommend this to my friends.
Ordered Katsu Sandwich and Omurice, waited for like 15 mins but totally worth the wait! Crispy outside with juicy pork inside, with mustard to balance the taste. Matcha Tiramisu was so good!! Rich Matcha flavour, highly recommended. The best tiramisu I’ve had so far. Matcha Lamington was good too, not super sweet as I imagined!
I visited this cafe for the first time and it has a nice outdoor seating area (perfect for warm days). The menu seems to be inspired by Japanese cuisine with a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. I ordered "Kenny Style Okonomiyaki" which comprised of corn, zucchini, pumpkin, bonito flakes, cheddar cheese and shallots. It was delicious and a quirky take on the Japanese dish. Only negative element was that the staff took a long time to deliver our food (they may have forgotten our order). I would visit this cafe again!
Had the Matcha Shake with Omurice, Katsu Sandwich and believe me when I say that this cafe really lives up to the hype! The cafe is a small joint in the quiet area of Redfern and I throughly enjoyed every last moment being here eating the crispy tender katsu sandwhich to the wholesome cooked Omurice, it is definitely one of my cafes to go to! The simplicity of the meal is what amazes me the most compare to other high end instagram friendly food where their good looks like an art project and yet it has the taste that definitely hooks you in. I will be coming back next time to try the Matcha Lamington and other nice desserts since they ran out due to popularity!
Love most things that i tried in this cafe. The matcha tiramisu, matcha lamington and the matcha latte.
As for the savoury food, the ebi pasta was good too with a generous serving of the prawns. But i prolly wont order it again next time because it was just alright.
After seeing Sydney breakfast favourites like smashed avocado and bacon and egg brekkie burgers with a Japanese twist on the menu, I knew I had to try Cafe Oratnek out! There were so many dishes that I was intrigued by so it was difficult to choose, but in the end, we decided to order the umami mushroom toast and signature pork katsu sandwich. The first bite of the mushrooms was an absolute explosion of umami flavour
Came for the popular matcha lamingtons, nice and creamy.
I almost walked past it because it looks almost like someone's home and the sign is just a symbol of a fork. There are no words.
Very attentive and friendly service.
The place has an industrial feel to it.
