10/10, great food. Every dish was well seasoned and flavoursome.

Only issue is that pacing is a bit rushed.

This is a very humble and beautiful Japanese restaurant tucked away off of the main streets near museum station. Absolutely loved the cosy and homey atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. The set menu offered a wide variety of different kinds of dishes. Some very quite flavourful while some were a bit bland in my opinion - nothing really stood out. Overall, a good dining experience and a nice place to go to for a girls night/date night.

Not really in the CBD, tucked behind Hyde Park on the Surry Hills side, it actually took us a while to find Sasaki, hidden away in an unassuming location off an alleyway. Wow, it is a find though. An elegant omakase for $80 (there was a $60 option too), and a matching tasting of sake ($50 each), oh an a supplement for having the wagyu beef instead of the duck (for one of us, $20). We found it well worth it.

Comfort and simple homecooking food style! The venue is really small and they also have outside sittings. The highlight for me would be the fish course for main dish, was dedicate and the compliment rice was seasoned very nice.

We love Japanese food and we decided to book into Sasaki for a birthday dinner, Sasaki has been on our list for a while and it was great to finally visit. Quite inconspicuous from the street, with a simple curtain entry that you may miss if you’re not looking hard enough. But make sure you do, because this place is amazing!

We order the full set menu. The Tuna was to die for, with delicious egg York source. The Chicken is very nice as well. And the service was great and patience. However, the main cource and the soup is just very normal. Overall, This is a good set menu and I Have had enough!

It’s strange that this restaurant only got one set menu, and more strangely, you have to finish a dish before having the next one. But the environment is so fascinating and every dish is bravo, damn tasty! I love it, i will visit again when it change the menu!

Love the layout of the restaurant, reminded me of the intimate hole-in-the walls restaurants in Japan.

When we arrived there were other people outside waiting as they had not finished setting up.
Then one by one our names were called out for our bookings. I had requested to sit at the counter.

The menu is only omakase so that makes food preparation a lot easier and faster.

Loved the egg&crab custard, was so smooth and tasty.

The corn was so aromatic, thoroughly enjoyed that. Highly recommend the Wagyu!

I pretty much liked it all.

Cause I'm small, this type of menu suits me, for my partner his only criticism is that portions are a little small.

The service is great and overall they did a wonderful job accommodating my requests especially since this was for a birthday.

This is a small but really great place for seasonal and delicious Japanese food. The omakase menu had a great variety of seafood and meat. All the dishes were very nice but my absolute favourites were the egg custard, corn tempura, salmon and rice and the wagyu beef. Definitely make a booking in advance!

We chose to go to sasaki after many recommendations from our friends and it was absolutely amazing. The menu changes often and not really your run in the middle authentic Japanese restaurant. But nonetheless, the food is amazing with a play on flavours, ingredients, textures and temperatures. The way was a little bit chewy, but the seafood dishes are a must have. Fresh, quality ingredients, simple and most importantly, clean and elegant flavours.

A very homely feel when sitting in the restaurant and throughout the course of your dinner, that feeling is only reinforced further through the simple home cooking and everyday wares. Oysters & Yuzu were simple, fresh and a great start to the meal. This was followed by Prawns, Apple & Coriander - my partner and I's favourite, Egg & Crab, Asparagus, Salmon, Duck and Beef. The braised beef cheeks melted in our mouths and the potato mash is indescribable.

Actually rating: 3.5

Sasaki was an unexpected delight. The restaurant is Scandi minimalist with blonde wood, sleek lines and delicate diningware.

We opted for ala carte to share instead of the set menu: chawanmushi - silky smooth egg custard topped with crab meat and lemon oil; tender octopus braised with daikon - so much umami; rice with chicken mince and mushrooms - mandatory carbs; corn fritters with beetroot puree - served lollipop style on a stick, fun eat but not really a repeat order for me.

The two mains were superb: kurobuta pork with ontama egg and spinach; lamb with hoji tea and saikyo miso. The meats were perfectly cooked, and the flavours of each dish complemented them well.

For dessert, we shared the mini wafer with soy glazed nuts and caramel and the grapefruit sorbet with yuzu jelly. My favourite was the first one - the wafer shell itself was not impressive but the combination of the dark luscious caramel and the salty caramelized nuts was fantastic.

Service was mostly friendly, sometimes stern with one of the waitresses but in a polite way. We enjoyed dinner here, and while it's not an everyday spot due to the higher prices, I'd certainly recommend it for a night out.

This quintessential Japanese restaurant celebrates the beauty of every day things such as ceramics, candles, rugs and transports you to Japan for the night. The dishes are small, delicate and unusual. That asparagus, that cuttlefish. I could go on and on. I can’t wait to go back to this rather special restaurant. #japan #japanesefood

Such a cute space located in the city off a cute little alley way! There some outdoor and indoor seating, we choose to be seated outside as it was a nice warm day! Every little detail at the restaurant just made the experience just that much better from the chopsticks, plates and atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful. We loved the slow cooked kumbuta pork and the braised octopus

I came here for dinner last week, the venue interior and atmosphere was quite intimate... great for a date night.

I was here with 3 other people so we had to order the set menu, I can appreciate all the dishes as they took a lot of care to each ingredient and the quality was really high. However, the flavours were not to my palette, I can understand what they were trying to achieve and they did it well but wasn’t for my liking. It was quite subtle for me but the salmon and Wagyu dish was cooked exceptionally though the flavours were average. I think I am more use to stronger Japanese flavours compared to something more “traditional” or even “flat”.

The highlight of the night was the dessert! Every single dessert on the menu was amazing and I honestly couldn’t fault it, I would definitely come back just for the dessert.

The service was okay during the night, wasn’t the best but I couldn’t complain as we didn’t really have any issues. Serving sizes were good and price was decent at $80pp for the set menu.

Last time I went to Sydney on an eating holiday, I left with one regret, not having gone to Sasaki. Having been a long time fan of Cre Asion (arguably the best cafe in Australia), I really should have gotten some sort of notification when the owner Yu Sasaki decided to open up a restaurant next to the cafe, along Alberta lane.

Sasaki is a small intimate restaurant that serves authentic Japanese food. It is located at a rather discrete location though, I got lost looking for the restaurant lol. Pictured are gurnard sashimi, clams sake, egg & crab, beef in red wine sauce, veggies dish: tofu, cabbage, persimmon & walnut (perfect dish to make me eat my veggies!) and cauliflower, potato, brussel sprout & pumpkin. Not only were the dishes a delight for the eyes, they were also a delight for the palate

Wow. One of the better Japanese restaurants I have ever been to. For two people, you can order 4 dishes + dessert as you will be full. We ordered kingfish, ocean trout, wagyu, beef cheek, asparagus, plum sake custard and wafer/almond dessert.
- kingfish: one of my favourite dishes ever. The fish is so so fresh and delicious, and the sauce is unique and paired perfectly. You mix in the ginger and shallots etc into the sauce.
- ocean trout: rich and melt in the mouth. Again, incredible flavours and textures it was cooked perfectly
- asparagus: tempura style. Nice to break up the dishes
- beef cheek: pull apart, so soft, with a rich gravy/sauce. This was my friends favourite dish
- wagyu: we did not like :( I thought it would be melt in the mouth but it was kind of chewy and cut in big chunks...reminded me of a tongue. Maybe I just do not like wagyu beef.
- dessert: AMAZING. The custard was bittersweet and I could have eaten a tub of it. The desserts are bite size so you can totally order more than one ;)
Our plan for when we return is to get 3 mains to share and 2 desserts each!
Also, the yuzu sake is fresh and delicious. Yum!

Such a hidden gem... we walked pass couple of times following google map and finally found it. It’s a really cozy contemporary japanese restaurant. Their menu is really creative~ but of course fushion... we had the omakase since we didn’t know what to expected. It was 80 pp. so not to bad for 8~9 dishes. Loved the duck, ocean trout, ume custard and the egg. The rest were alright, not surprising~ will be back...

From the moment you step into Sasaki, it feels like you’ve entered another world! Clean colour schemes mixed in with quaint furniture settings makes it a comfortable place to enjoy your meal.

All dishes were fresh and beautifully curated. The bonito tataki was the star dish of the night, instantly melting in your mouth. Oysters had a nice dressing that you probably wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. Desserts were beautifully plated and packed so much flavour in such a tiny, delicate little wafer.

Set menu was definitely worth it for the quality and service. Looking forward to coming back.

We ordered a la carte from the menu and tried a total of 8 dishes. I found there was great attention to detail on every dish and thought everything was presented well. We enjoyed all the dishes, especially the prawns, chawanmushi & the 2 bigger courses of beef cheeks which melted in our mouths and pork cutlet. We tried sake in 2 flavours: peach and yuzu and I loved the peach one! Also save room for dessert, although it shouldn’t be too hard since the serving size here are a bit on the small side.

Amazing experience that surpassed my expectations. The flavours were so refined and each dish was very well balanced. I would say this is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Sydney so far (it ranked much above Sokyo for me in terms of food quality and cost worthiness).

We had the kingfish, wagyu, egg and prawn, scallops and today's rice. My winning dishes were the Kingfish (excellent entree, the acidity of the capsicum and vinegar soup really opens up your palette), and the wagyu (the sauce brought out its flavours, sometimes I find wagyu way too rich, chewy, and I get sick of it easily but this one wasn't anything like that).

The food was amazing! So delicious. Very authentic Japanese style and techniques. The atmosphere was relaxed, minimalist and comfortable whilst still feeling very special.
As a birthday dinner it was one to remember. The meal was set out Omakase style set menu.
Even the bathroom was lovely with a diffuser making it smell fresh.
I would come back everyday if I could.

Sasaki had a nice and simple minimalistic interior, with quite a small place making it more intimate and exclusive. The staff were really friendly, and the food came out really quickly compared to other restaurants that offer set menus, perhaps a bit too quick making me feel like we are rushed because they gave us a time limit of 2 hours for the table (we finished 10 course in an hour).

All the dishes were really tasty and delicious. Everything on the plate compliments each other. My favorite would be the desserts, where I chose the monaka and mochi. The monaka had a really nice filling and also a bit of crunch to it.

My least favorite dish was the duck, its was quite hard to chew and the texture of the duck was not that good. The duck sausage was better.

Overall, the other dishes was delicious, but portion was quite too small.

Overall, I had an enjoyable experience.

The food at at Sasaki are more on the lighter side of flavors and none really caught my palette's attention, but maybe this is because I do prefer stronger flavors and aroma's,
However, my favorite dishes of the night was the fremantle sweet prawn ceviche, yam bean duck sausage and the 2 desserts from their Omakase menu.
Also, their staff were super friendly and also super helpful with recommendations for both food and drinks.

Great atmosphere and food. All of the dishes were great, but it was the beef cheek that stole the show. The braised beef cheek was unbelievably tender and the paired sauce made it even more amazing.

The waiters and waitress were very attentive and spent time explaining each dish. It was a great experience and I would definitely return.

The food is quite average. The best dish that I am really enjoy are prawn, pork and two little yummy dessert.
Staff are friendly. However, one thing that I don't like it is I actually booked table 2 weeks in advance to make sure that I get a table, but it end up with I have to sit on the counter. They actually do not have reserve sign on the table at all when I arrive at the restaurant. It's make me wonder why would I bother to reserve the table, if it gonna end up with sit on the counter.

MACKEREL, SO GOOD. The oily fish was balanced with the perfect amount of vinegar in the rice. The fish is already flawlessly seasoned so there’s no need to dip it in soy sauce. This was definitely my favourite for the night and I hope it stays on their seasonal changing menu!

Sasaki is a complicated place...

I'd say the best way to explain is...

Conjure up a three hat restaurant, now peel back the: suited waiters/waitress, very expensive ingredients and that dictionary level wine list oh and those funky spheres shenanigans then you get Sasaki - somewhere that gives common ingredients the love and care to make them great.

Again this is what makes it a hit and miss! Perception and personal taste. If your all about the Wagyu this or Sea Urchin that...not the place for you, but if wanna know what good Japanese food can be this is your place...

***Caveat on the authentic Japanese food it is and it isn't :)

When Yu Sasaki embarked on his culinary career over a decade ago, he knew that one day he would open his own restaurant. Twelve years in the making, the traditional Japanese curtains known as noren were finally put in place, marking the entrance to Restaurant Sasaki. Nestled in the concrete jungle between Alberta Street and Nithsdale Lane, it’s in a bit of a hidden spot; it’s about to get a lot less hidden.

I’ve been visiting different types of food places recently and I hope to share with you all soon. Apart from brunches/coffees, one of my favourite cuisines is Japanese food, from sashimi to udon to ramen, I just love everything about Jap style cooking. If you’re a true matcha loving Sydney sider, then you’d know about Cafe Cre Asion, best known for their huge ‘bowls’ of matcha latte. The restaurant I visited yesterday, Sasaki, is in fact another amazing ‘cre-asion’ by the same owner. It is a tiny restaurant tucked away in an alley way close to ‘Cafe Cre Asion’, newly opened, its whole exterior design definitely gives you the impression of being in Japan instead of Sydney.

Order the takimono for a bonus display of tableside theatre. A wooden box grater is brought over for shaving a large hunk of dried bonito. The smell of dried tuna is intoxicating. After staff have grated the bonito, a little drawer at the bottom is removed so its wispy contents can be transferred to your bowl of takimono.

A late review, but one that had to be made. I had dinner on a Saturday, so advance booking was required. My group of 4 was required to choose the set menu. If you enjoy Japanese, then chances are that you'll be pleased by Sasaki. I think my favourite was the Egg custard. Least favourite would be corn & beetroot. This one had bits of corn shaped into a sphere and was attached to a skewer. It was awkward to eat and too hard to bite into. Everything else, I’d go back for because each dish was just bursting with flavours in the best kind of way. The space had indoor and outdoor options, however, both are on the tiny side. Aesthetically, it speaks Japanese and maintains its authenticity. Maybe I was in a good mood on this evening, but it gets a solid 4.5-5 stars for me.

Went here for the Omakase (chef’s choice) tasting menu and was not disappointed. The dishes are deceptively small at first but you do get a full meal by the end, especially given some of the heavier dishes are towards the end. Really liked the progression from light dishes at the beginning to heavier dishes at the end. Chawanmushi was so silky and delicate. Curried beef cheek was rich and satisfying. Also really enjoyed the chocolate mousse cake to finish. Service was nice, attentive and polite. Also giving marks for the ambiance of the restaurant. Nice minimal decorations and beautiful dish ware.

So easy to recommend, this is one of my new favourite restaurants. Very well hidden, we almost couldn't find the place. It's minimally and tastefully decorated (as you'd expect), and it's fairly small. I'd describe dining here as intimate. The food was amazing - we had the degustation. Everything was fresh, all of the dishes were delicate, and made with a lot of thought and care. Delicious down to the last mouthful, and just the right amount. Service was fantastic too - waiters were all super friendly and knew the food well. We'll definitely be coming back here. 👌

Omakase experience was beautiful, and the staff were lovely. The food was fantastic for seafood lovers, for my partner who can do seafood but wouldn’t go out of his way for them he was a little disappointed with the fishy-ness. For me every dish was great, but the tuna and prosciutto was out of this world.

Had a lovely date night here last night for Valentine's Day. I was blown away by the minimalistic look, but flavour food that came out of this tiny kitchen. We had the Omakase and from light to heavy each dish really delivered an amazing taste. We really loved the crab and egg dish, so sweet and light. As an added bonus for booking on Valentine's Day we were given complementary chocolate 😊. Definitely will go back again.
