Review Uccello - Sydney

Used to come here to watch the chefs custom make our pasta order, but unfortunately done away with since COVID & everything is ordered via app now! At least they did away with the weird custom card order/payment system. Pasta quality & options still fantastic though! Can't comment on the pizza or other menu items as have never tried

Honestly pretty disappointed considering I’ve loved Vapiano ever since I was a child. The pesto pasta I ordered was incredibly dry. It had no flavor and was also undercooked. I also prefer their old card system to order. You now just scan the QR code on your table to order. I usually love their truffle pizza but can’t comment on any of their pizzas as I didn’t try it this time around. My friend however did like the pizza he got. Although the staff were really nice, the food also took really long to arrive.

Good value for money. Reasonably priced Italian for something located right in the middle of Sydney CBD. Nice cocktail selection as well. Since covid they now do the QR codes on the table to order and pay for food and drinks. Previously you used to order your pasta to the chef and choose everything you want and watch them cook it... that was half the fun or 'gimmick' of going to this restaurant. I used to explain the 'experience' to everybody when recommending.... now it will be 'good value for money' kind of lost its appeal.

First time trying this place out. When we walked into the restaurant the atmosphere was pretty good, it looked very beautiful. We were sat upstairs and we ordered 2 pastas, garlic bread and 2 drinks. We later moved tables and noticed the waiter. We waited 40 minutes and still didn’t receive our entree or drinks let alone table water. Our table was also dirty with plates left from the previous customer. Told the waiter if he could clean the table and he answered “give me a minute” in a very rude manner as if I asked him for his kidney. He cleared the table but did not bother to even wipe it. Our drinks finally arrived but they were sent to the wrong table. We told the waitress again that we switched tables. 1 hour goes by and we get our pasta which was also sent to the wrong table. I let the waitress know that it’s been an hour and we haven’t received our entree not even table water. The pasta was cold, dry and had no flavour. I told the waitress that we don’t want our food and to give us a refund. If I am paying $90 for my food I should expect some decent food. Overall this is the last time I’ll be coming here and I wont be recommending this place to anyone else. I get better customer service at McDonald’s.

This place is great, didn't have to wait to long the food is fast and amazing. It's a lively place with good food and atmosphere the drinks are all unique and pretty. Will most definitely come back for future parties and outings.

The food is very delicious. Everything we ordered was great! The service though was a bit questionable, some of the (probably new) guys didn't know what to do, and couldn't even express themselves well. The experienced staff members were super friendly, tried to run the place but they need help. I'll be back for sure, just need to make sure I'm not starving as I waited long for my food and drink order, tablet order had some issues.

Vapiano’s is a great place to go with a big group of people. You can pay separately and order separately through the QR code so you don’t need to worry about splitting a bill. While the food is not exactly authentically Italian style or the best in town, there are many options. You can choose your own pasta base, type, and add complimentary bread and cheese. They also have these delightful little pots of fresh herbs on every table which you can just pick off and put into your meal.

We ordered the carbonara fettuccine, which was perfect. The bacon and rich cream sauce balanced the flavours well. We went for a simple pepperoni which was amazing as always. We were however not happy with the starter. The garlic breads we ordered were not hot and didn’t taste fresh. It was disappointing as the rest of the meal was excellent.

Wonderful place to bring guests guaranteed to have a great night, the staff are very inviting and helpful with the food rounding it out for an enjoyable experience
Good Food Good Mood
I went to dinner at Ucello with a girlfriend on the weekend and was thoroughly impressed with the remarkable service and food. I always enjoy the pool backdrop as to me it is just so quintessentially Sydney. One thing I didn’t much care for however was the noise. I appreciated the dj later on in the night but in the restaurant it makes it extremely difficult to hear your dining companion.<br/><br/>The entree I selected off the menu was unavailable so I decided to progress straight to the main. As a result of that the staff thoughtfully brought out a complimentary entree to accompany my friends tuna dish. It was an antipasto style dish on which I enjoyed the cheese given I don’t eat pork but it’s definitely the thought that counts. <br/><br/>My friends tuna was also exceptional. The mains were disappointing in that she had ordered a crab pasta entree size and I had ordered a main sized gnocchi. My gnocchi was truly sensational but the dish appeared smaller in size than the entree one. There was in total 14 pieces of gnocchi for $33. Greedily I wanted more<br/><br/>Dessert was simple but faultless, a delicious raspberry sorbet and a glass of limoncello. Well worth visiting but don’t come here expecting hearty Italian hospitality in the form of generous serve

From the moment we walked out of the lift we were greeted with promptness and efficiency. We didn't have to wait for our orders to be taken and for the antipasti to arrive. The skillet grilled calamari, pork porchetta and spanner crab tagliolini (crab servings were very generous) deserve special mentions. The squid ink chitarra was very smooth and tasty and were accompanied with generous helpings of seafood and cherry tomatoes. Watermelon Granita was delicately sweetened and the watermelon cubes added to the refreshing taste. Staff were very attentive throughout the night and ambience was relaxed.

Despite the ostentatious nature of the pool bar backdrop and the propensity for wannabe investment bankers to loiter with pants cut just below their knees, the food at this place was outstanding. I led off with the Prosciutto Di Parma entree which was a great start to the subtle with Italian deli style overtures. I had the Barwang Chicken for main which was irresistible - chicken seems to be a dish that restaurants struggle with to get right - this place was the exception - moist, succulent, aromatic flavours and the corn was creatively presented with a sweet honey flavour. One of the best meals I’ve had in Sydney! Strongly recommend

A gorgeous and colourful restaurant overlooking a decadent swimming pool on the rooftop of the Ivy building, Uccello is a contemporary Italian restaurant which earned a hat from the Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food 2017. <br/><br/>I began my meal with split yamba prawns with chilli and parsley. However, it was disappointing that the prawns were not fresh enough (caught within the day) and the prawn meat were borderline mushy and stuck to its shell. <br/><br/>My main course, a barramundi with eggplant salad, was overcooked. The fish was distinctively hard and dry. The side dish, the Brussels sprouts, was hard and raw. How I wished every restaurant prepares the sprouts like porteno! <br/><br/>Overall, Uccello offers good service and sumptuous views of the pool but they could do more to improve on their food.

A favourite of mine, great ambience, great service ... The Rosemary Foccacia always leaves me in awe of how great bread can be. Personal favourites are Split Yamba Prawns, Skillet Fried Calamari and for main the Crumbed Veal Cutlet. Would highly recommend this restaurant, and not too many dining venues have music in the background these days. Great to see Ucello provides for such a vibrant yet intimate atmosphere. The only negative I can say is the bathroom is outside towards where the pool is, but after such a wonderful meal, one maybe should walk the extra distance.
Split The Bill
Had dinner here earlier in the week. Service was great but the food was really just ok.  Entree I had the salmon, the chicken for main which came with very tiny sides of roast potato and salad this was very sparse but the lemon tart for dessert was delicious with a big tang to it. <br/>I felt that the portions were small even for a high end restaurant.<br/>Service and restaurant ambience with the Ivy pool to look out was great.  Check out the bathrooms they are kind of funky.
Jade
What can I say? I love the food but not the service. Both times I've been and ordered sides with my meal, they did not come in time. The first time I followed up and they brought it over just before I finished my mains. The second time it did not come at all. Pretty hopeless if you ask me. How hard is it to bring a side of salad with the main? Isn't it common sense? I don't order it to have as dessert!
Isaac Icecream
$100 set menu purchased me some bread, 2 prawns (cut in half - nice touch), an overcooked small steak and some chat potatoes. Would not recommend.

Took my partner here for his birthday a few nights ago as we had wanted to try this restaurant for quite some time and it was awful. He's not too fussy but food is my passion and I was disappointed by this hatted restaurant. <br/><br/>We started with some olives that were complimentary - for me that's a great start, I lovvvvvve olives. <br/><br/>Our entree was prosciutto with broad beans and Parmesan and a serve of the veal ragu pappardelle. Prosciutto is also a favourite of mine so I was pleased with the dish however the broad beans were just so random and didn't tie into the dish well at all. The pasta appeared to be made in house, which you would assume would happen at an Italian restaurant anyway however, it was really tough! Not tough as in undercooked, but tough as in the mixture of the dough must've been unbalanced... it was tough and hard. The ragu wasn't reduced enough so it was quite watery and there was hardly any meat to be seen. <br/><br/>Trying to stay positive and enjoy my lovely night out with my other half and then our mains arrived. I honestly couldn't have been more upset. We ordered the 650gm of wagyu sirloin which was designed to share between the two of us and it came with no sauce or condiments... not even natural juices or red wine jus. Hmm... the sides we ordered were the duck fat potatoes with rosemary. They were overcooked and dry. We also ordered the salad which was very bitter and frustrating to eat. And to top it off we ordered the steak medium rare and it was just so tough. I literally had two bites and couldn't eat anymore as it was hurt my teeth. My partner ate the rest as he was super hungry and he felt like we were wasting the $70 something steak.<br/><br/>I mentioned something to the waitress when she was clearing our plates as she asked how everything was. I just said I was unhappy with the steak and she then passed that onto her manager who later offered us limoncello to finish. <br/><br/>Luckily Ivy Pool Bar was open and was quiet as we went to the couch and had a cocktail to finish the birthday celebrations. <br/><br/>Too bad about the food. I will never go again. For good authentic Italian food we should've just gone to Bar Reggio which is always a favourite for us and is half the price.

Sometimes I see reviews and I wonder why don't people like it more? They shouldn't have such a low score! Well this has happened to me......at this place,Uccello. This place seems to get average scores but I can't see why! It should be higher than its current rating <br/><br/>For myself I can see why it's one chef hat. <br/>Service is impeccable and they even gave us a doggy bag,now that's service! I didn't expect it from a high class place like this and was pleasantly surprised <br/><br/>Came on a Saturday and you can either choose 3 or 4 courses and how do you pick your courses? I was told that it's up to you! So if you want 4 mains you can have it for the set price! What a interesting concept <br/><br/>We choose to try one of each category with our 4 courses <br/><br/>Prosciutto do Parma is better than what your average restaurant would serve,I really liked the cheese they used<br/><br/>Calamari,octopus I recommend, nothing chewy where my jaw gets sore from chewing forever and nothing happening in my mouth <br/><br/>Quail is not for me in not a fan but my fiancé loved it <br/><br/>The primo/pastas were a letdown, the reginette and squid ink did nothing for me,expecting more taste from both <br/><br/>The pork loin was ok,decent size dish but a lot of fat on it but hey that was what I was expecting <br/><br/>The veal though is a winner! <br/><br/>Very impressed with our experience, worth trying and worthy of its chef hat status

Swirl into plates of high quality pasta dishes served with delightful service in a cosy setting despite the lively beats coming from the Ivy Pool Club. Start off with the spaghetinni, which was quite fulfilling, as was the creamy chitarra and caserecce. Chargrill with fish fillet if you’re not feeling in the mood for pasta.

Fancy Italian restaurant located on the same level as the Ivy pool. Despite the upbeat tunes from the pool club, the restaurant can also offer an intimate ambience. The menu has a good variety, primarily pastas, I ordered the delightful chitarra complimented by a wonderful selection of sides - the honeycomb carrots are divine!

Uccello is an Italian restaurant located on the top of Sydney's Ivy establishment - next to the famous Ivy pool bar area. It's a one hat restaurant serving Italian cuisine which we had decided to check out for a birthday celebration. Arriving around 6:30pm on a Friday meant that the place was buzzing with the after work office crowd and unfortunately we were initially seated at the edge of the restuarant - towards the open pool bar area. This meant that it was quite hard to make conversation given the music and noise from the other guests. A quick comment to the waiter and we were whisked inside to a more quiet table.

If you want to be seen then this is the place where to eat your pasta. Food was ok ... i had the Spaghettini, cherry tomatoes, Ortiz anchovy, tuna belly, capers which was nice but flavours were popping in my mouth which i would expect from a One Hat venue. The complimentary focaccia bread is light and fluffy. They automatically add the service charge to your bill here which is strange because we were only a table of 5.. generally it would be for tables for 10 or more people. Not sure if this was wrongly done.
Amys_food_adventures
Bday dinner for one of the foodie gals. Complimentary bread with nice olives and olive oil to start. Then straight to mains, I got the kingfish with salsa and also got to sample some sides of broccolini, carrots and potatoes. Fish was well looked but not so much flavour. Prob should of got a pasta dish! Sides were great! Loved the carrots with honeycomb. At the end of the night a service charge is already added to the bill which I was not aware of. Cue lesson to read bill properly.

Very disappointed! Uccello is situated beside Ivy Pool, making it a pretty cool spot for dinner. However, the food quality was just disappointing. I ordered a standard seafood pasta - the flavours were average whilst the pasta was undercooked. My boyfriend ordered a steak which was overcooked and ridiculously overpriced (as no sides were included). Our waitress was also making mistakes here and there, and given the price we were paying - we expected better service. The restaurant has potential but needs to refine their menu / waiting staff. Shouldn't have been surprised given we got a table last minute on a Friday night. Disappointing.

Great ambience for a summer lunch as it is located overlooking the ivy pool. Sommelier was ok, could've been more attentive especially for a bunch who are serious about their wines. We ordered various dishes from the scampi with chilli sauce, steak and seafood pasta. All food was great especially the steak which for a medium rare, did not have one drop of blood - spot on.

I love this place for their décor and setting overlooking the pool. Especially great for long lunches and early dinners. Fabulous wine list and the food is always amazing! Service is wonderful, mostly. Has a real Hamptons feel to it and nice to feel like you are far from the city when in fact it is just downstairs

I was not unfamiliar with Ivy pool but didn't realize the restaurant overlooked the Ivy pool was Uccello until we came here for March into Merivale one year. For $33 each we got one main dish with a glass of Villa Maria. As the main was pork, my friend substituted it for vegetarian. However to her horror she actually found traces of bacon in her meal. The restaurant quickly rectified the error and made her some seared scallops off the menu. It was a near disaster but thank god all turned out alright. She was pleased with her scallops. The rest of us enjoyed the juicy pork loin too and we all decided to order dessert which was not part of the deal. I had panna cotta, it was ok, could set a bit longer. Overall we enjoyed the food, the wine . It's like fine dining in a casual summery setting. Will be back again in the next Merivale event.

We loved it here! Great experience after ready mixed reviews we came because my girlfriend was dying to try it. Glad we did..<br/>Service was good and attentive. Cocktails were yummy. Huge wine list too but not moscato for my friend.. She ended up choosing a cocktail.<br/>Had the scampi and she had calamari for dinner - both amazing! The scampi were tasty and buttery and melt in your mouth. I had a short pasta dish with saffron and Italian sausage next that was so tasty and amazing! I could have eaten a main size of that pasta and been happy.. But finally a melt in your mouth soft slow cooked lamb in a eggplant ragu came out that was so good I ate every last bit besides being full. <br/>Dessert was sticky fig pudding with ice cream that was perfect. We loved every minute and I recommend it.

...we managed to get the last table at Uccello. Score! What a pretty little place it is, and from the start everyone was pretty friendly. To start we ordered the Frizzante cocktail, another thing on my list is to create a signature drink and this one had a lot of interesting ingredients. Vodka, prosecco, coconut syrup, pink grapefruit juice and maraschino liqueur. It wasn’t at all what we expected, but it was super delicious.
Life Of A Travel Czar
The dish has the taste of the rich smoky bone marrow (which I scoop out and mix with the risotto) paired with the creamy thickness of the risotto combined with the sweet honeyed hints of saffron. It’s a masterpiece. The rice (cooked al dente) offers the perfect “disruptive” texture to this creamy dish. It’s decadent, it’s love, it’s everything you could wish for on a Friday night – pure soul food.

Uccello is located above Ivy, on level 4 of the building. It boasts a good sized sitting area indoor and outdoor, as well as a pool and bar if you want to have a soak while drinking. I believe the pool is for cocktails and mingling, and not for dining I suppose. Please note that their menu changes really often, and as of this post, I am sure the menu has already changed a little.
Heatherhong85
Uccello is part of the Ivy and I’d never been interested in it – not with Cafe Sopra and Jamie’s Italian only a few blocks away. But we went because it was the only place that fit the brief and there were just a couple of things that blew me away and I feel like I need to tell the world about.
Greedy Girl
It wasn't a wonderful experience and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to what would cause such a sad result. The previous visit, on an enormously busy day before Christmas had been excellent - Greedy Girl wishes she'd taken notes to be able to provide details of dishes that were quite delicious.
Bad Table Manners
The setting reminds me of one of those clubs in LA where people party by the pool. Maybe this restaurant is trying to emulate that type of atmosphere. The food here was pricey, but then given the size of each main, well worth the money. Although I feel like the person at the helm of the oven that day was not too experienced, because both dishes were underdone, and had to be sent back to the kitchen to finish cooking. Good thing was that they gave us complementary salad and wedges. ‘Pollo arrosto, polenta, salvia’ half Barossa chicken, polenta, butter, sage ‘Trota al forno con patate’ wood fired rainbow trout, potatoes, olives A whole fish for $34? that’s good value! And the olives were the freshes I’ve ever tasted. Despite the semi-cooked food, it still tasted super awesome, and worthy of accolades.
The Daily Out Blog
The ambience is very sophisticated, yet relaxed. Service is attentive, friendly and, apart from the French sommelier, Italian, as you would expect. The quality of food and the attention to detail is exceptional. The menu features a variety of Northern Italian dishes reinterpreted. It was the 5 of us, and all ordered different things. I couldn’t manage to take photos, as it was pretty dark.
Charn Tangson
My main for the night which is pictured above was the Orecchiette, nduja, buffalo ricotta, cherry tomato, basil . Definitely one of the best pasta’s I’ve had in Sydney as it was cooked perfectly al dente and the sauce was a good mix of ricotta cheese and tomato which is rich in flavour but not overwhelming on the taste buds. 250gm char-grilled Rangers Valley sirloin, Pepe Saya truffled butter, roast radish The main thing that sold me
Sherrie Huang
I expected the dishes of the second piatti to the be the smallest but I was definitely wrong! The waiter brings this out to me and laughs a little. "I hope you're hungry!" he says. My eyes popped out at how large the serving was. It was the entire pork shin! At this stage I was beyond full.
Priscilla @FoodPornNation.com
Headed up by David Lovett, the menu promises an authentic Italian experience, with a less is more approach. It focusing on good quality produce and it shows. The seafood is incredibly fresh, the pasta is hand-made and flavours are subtle yet tasty enough to make each and every dish truly sing.
Linda E
Not your average tiramisu, this was a fountain of flavours. Loved every bite. I think I nearly cried when I physically could not finish it.
Up For A Feed
The cured meat plate is a good way to start a meal there is a selection of meats with a range of flavours, goes well with the very tasty complimentary bread.
Sydney Shop Girl
I was relieved that even the Sydney Confidential set love good Italian carbs. With olive oil on the side.
Simon Leong
Poolside views and nice atmosphere, Well presented and tasty dishes, Efficient service. Bring your bathing togs for a swim
Gianna - TheEmptyFridge
The cured meat selection was top notch - Prosciutto San Danielle, Wagyu Bresciola, Spicy Salami but unfortunately it did not go too far with 4 hungry patrons who do love their antipasti.
For The Love Of Food
<br/>But I can see myself returning here for a lazy-long lunch, slurping a bowl of pasta and checking out the ‘Uccello’s’ prancing around the pool club. I think I’ve worked it out – PN.

Ah, the beauty of marketing. Not merely hours before I was professing its value in today's world then I see it in action on myself. I'd missed the the launch party for the Merivale Winter Feasts but sought to rectify that by immediately taking advantage o

Nice settings. Uccello is great as it is in ivy<br/>Its cool vibrant atmosphere with surrounding stylish decor was probably why we went here<br/>It is a must try but food is ok<br/>It is a little overpriced for what you get <br/>best part is easy you access to the ivy pool
Dk.ze
Not a great experience. Nice venue, good service, but food not as good as expected<br/>the whole pigeon ordered was rubbery /tough and could not eat it<br/>not good enough for the price and reputation of the place
BigJimDevine
Good food, nothing sensational the Saturday $100 minimum for three course really includes the priority access to the pool bar / nightclub. Hey it's the Ivy, it's cool, funky, your girlfriend will love it!
CoeliacReviewer
Amazing food & service. Absolutely loved our evening at Uccello. Dined on a Friday night at 7pm under the Merivale $33 meal deal which includes a main and a glass of wine / beer. The service was outstanding - the waitor very friendly, helpful and particularly accommodating when ordering gluten free (GF bread provided). I had GF pasta with kangaroo and my partner the pork chop which was also GF - both divine. Very happy customer. Thank you
Nesium
Went here for a work dinner with 10 or so people, so can't comment on the price as I didn't look, but the service and food was great. Found it a little odd to have to go outside and down some stairs to get to the bathroom (doubles as the change room to ivy) but other than that, I had a great time and would come again.
Nomnomnom
Great food, service and setting. Really enjoyed the the meal. A little pricey, but worth it.
Lucy
Very poor service had to ask twice to get the menu, order sparkling water half way thru our glass gas fill with tap water still had to pay for 2 bottles we didnt consumed, ordered a entry got charged for main meal price and a $54 dollars service fee for a very poor service we were 6 people in total most of us were disappointed
Josh
Faultless.. At first, me and my partner weren't keen on eating at a club we both didn't particularly enjoy ourselves at. However, that quickly changed when we were greeted by friendly staff and a relaxed yet sophisticated feel to Uccello. The restaurant itself is stunning and overlooks the iconic Ivy Pool. The food was absolutely amazing, and I was happy to pay above average prices for it. Had an amazing time, and I was particularly fond of the staff.
Ben 001
Good food and setting but pricey for what you get
Cheryl
A bit disappointed..has lost its ambiance and exclusitivity. Food nice, however a bit on the pricey side. Better restaurants now out there I think!
Foodie1501
Good atmosphere. This restaurant definitely has a cool atmosphere. with poolside views, it was a very modern but cosy restaurant. Food was beautiful and the dishes had very nice presentation. Cocktails are nice too.
Priscilla @FoodPornNation.com
Better than I thought!. Came in with a girlfriend for the $33 March into Merivale special and was pleasantly surprised.<br/>Duck was perfectly pink and splendid and the linguine osso bucco ragu was also a knockout<br/>Very happy introduction to Uccello and I will definitely be back for more!
Peter Dowdall
Better than Kylie, not quite Callas.. Initially, when I first visited this place in late 2008, I had the view that going to Uccello for the food was like going to a Kylie concert for the music. Now it's like Kylie on auto-tune.<br/><br/>The food has much improved and, while still relatively uncomplex (and pricey) Italian fare, the kitchen is far more assured under Sig. Riva's guidance.<br/><br/>The ricotta gnocchi with moreton bay bugs was light, but flavourful. The snapper, giardiniera (pickled vegetables) and octopus salad also hit the spot. A good spot.<br/><br/>Speaking of good spot, maybe it was the gloomy day, but the pool was nymph and Justin Hemmes free (thankfully). Also gone seemed to be the corpulent ogling businessmen and Underbelly-type characters.<br/><br/>Certainly one of the better Italian CBD choices and great for a business lunch.

Best cheese selection in the area for sure, and I consider cheese to be major food group! I can't go into this store without an escort to stop me buying too much!
Phil Z
Great venue, average food. I was there for work and not paying but even then I was offended by the prices. They talk a good game - the staff were friendly and knowledgable, but in the end the food just didn't stack up to the promise. <br/><br/>Good spot for impressing overseas visitors, but don't go for the food alone. And the toilets are rather confusing.
Jeremy
Dry cheese and Iincorrect bill however overall a nice venue with friendly and knowledgable staff
Liz
Not overly impressed!. The restaurant itself is beautiful however the food was quite average and served in very small portions, considering the price of the meal! Service was OK but not fantastic and to go to the loo, you need to go out to the Pool Bar. Oh, and by the way - they don't lock. Not a great experience.
Lukas Picton
Good food, unfortunately the service was slow and unattentive...
CBDMasterChef
Looks over quality. Service was fantastic, Cool venue and view, meal was too expensive for what it was really.

An experience. A fabulous dining experience -beautiful food, great atmosphere & very passionate, knowledgeable staff. However, you almost need a security clearance to get through the door. This is very much a place to see & be seen, but well worth the drama.
