Review Ramen Kan - Sydney

Ark Huynh (Long)
Its a Japanese buffet, and depending on which packages u chose it will exclude certain things. We went with the premium because u don't do this often. Overall the food was good and staff was really friendly. Our packages gave use the option for sashimi and wagyu cuts. The wagyu isn't the top of the range, which is expected since its not overly expensive. One thing I found different here was you can order ramen as well. You have 90 mins in total to eat and last order is 20 mins. Ull have to take into account of cooking time and time required to order and arrive at the table. In saying that we found 45 mins into the dinner we were getting pretty full and had to slow down. Drinks are not included in the price.

For a Japanese BBQ, the place is very much subpar to say the least. Chose the standard buffet option for $53, which looked attractive but was definitely not worth it. The meats were frozen and after a short sizzle they became tough and hard to chew, and no we did not overcook it. The icecream was not bad though, the best dish of the night. Would not recommend!!!

The staff are warm and friendly! Came here for ramen but would love to return for the buffet in the future.

Hidden upstairs in Chinatown is an all you can eat Japanese BBQ. Monday to Thursday it costs 48.80 (not sure if this is for a limited time) otherwise costs 58.80 for the standard option. There are 2 other higher levels. We ate our fill. Service was quite fast. Good amount of different side dishes including agedashi tofu, takoyaki, kimchi, radish kimchi, beansprouts, seaweed salad. A downside is you can only pick one dessert (ice cream - vanilla/matcha/black sesame or apple jelly). Good value.

We have been twice. First time was promo menu (mon-thu) @ $39.80 and second time we took some friends along and upgraded to the premium menu $69.80. Excellent wagyu quality and we loved the sashimi too! Well worth the upgrade! Apart from that, their gyozas and karrage were what we kept ordering! Free beer/drink if paying w cash (premium menu)! To be fair the promo menu was also value to money, good pork belly and beef skirt! Arisa and another lady in glasses were always checking on us and carried wide smiles! Our toddler (who obviously ate for free) but has an allergy actually got their chef coming out to speak with us. How’s that for service?! We love them! Small place, cosy and feels like Japan! Can’t wait to go again <3

I have been to numerous BBQ restaurants within Sydney city, though this was my first time at Matsusaka. We ordered their premium OX Tongue, Premium Wagyu Beef Rib and Special Wagyu Rump at price around $25 per each dish. This price can be expected for higher quality meat that has been prepared and kept well but in this case I found the beef had been frozen prior to serving, with 6-7 pieces being thinly cut. Though a smallish amount, sure, if the quality is there then it can be easily forgiven. To be honest we could all hardly eat it and found the quality to be one of the worst we’ve ever had in any BBQ restaurant. We politely brought this up with the service lady but she didn’t care. In summary, if this was a one off bad quality meat that can be found in any cheap takeaway food court, it should have been addressed by staff. If this is their normal quality of meat served everyday, I don’t know how they have customers.

A JBBQ joint tucked away upstairs in chinatown (the old ramenkan). The buffet has a great selection of food on offer (including sashimi and seafood) and the staff are quick and friendly. The quality of the meat is okay and portions are small however for the variety and price you pay I think it's warranted and you can always order more. A good place to go with a group so that you can share all the dishes. Good selection of japanese drinks as well!

Not too bad lar but also not that blowing mind 😂 just quite normal. Service was good

They have discount price for promotion . However it doesn’t mean the customer to suffer the tasteless food and the portion issue. The soup is the worst I had and is like boring water and salt. Additionally it shows two piece of karaage (chicken ) in the menu but it comes with a piece cutting into half as “two”. The chef confirmed that is not by mistake and because of discounted price. Seriously a restaurant wants to do the promotion with poor quality of food and even cut the potion of size to the customer because of discount prices , it will deteriorate into shutting down soon . I used to come 10 years ago, I felt sorry the restaurant such poor food and service. I definitely won’t return again.

Shio ramen. Some great things about my meal - well cooked noodles (most important), light but flavoursome broth and tender roast pork. A bit of corn and butter on the side added an element of variation which was nice. Some reviews have pointed out the visible pork fat on the surface of the broth which was also in my bowl but not uncommon in my opinion.

Tasteless ramen 🍜 with mysterious location

The first impression of this restaurant is somehow bad - out-of-style decoration, no-waitress and no customer at a Saturday golden lunch time.

But Guorium🧪 and I still convinced ourselves that this place must be good as their scores on zomato is high. Then, the blunt truth hurts us.

The ramen is tasteless. I have to ‘announce’ is the worst ramen I have ever tried. Ruined my lovely Saturday lunch! Will never come back again and strongly suggest that it should be everyone’s ‘Forbidden Restaurant List’

Can’t figure out the single good thing... (wondering why the zomato score is so high?) The credibility of zomato score is in jeopardise.

Water + Pork fat + Instant noodle + diced meat = Tonkutsu Ramen

This seems to be their philosophy. Xihuahua 🐶 and I had all kinds of ramen in Sydney and this is probably the worst. Let me point out the plus first. The meat is flavorful and tender, plentiful bean sprouts and scallions, juicy gyoza filling, quick prep.

Now it is out of the way I need to state what is wrong with their ramen. On first taste it seemed kinda wholesome and simple with a rich homemade pork broth flavor. A few bites and it went down hill fast. As I eat more the soup turns into a watery consistency and tastes like water too. I was astounded. The meat came in random chopped slices and dices, really looked like offcuts. The egg was ok, it was partly running in the centre but had a ring of hardboiled part. I don’t know why they would do this, it should be runny entirely. The noodle looked and stated like instant noodle but thankfully it was not tough. The gyoza skin is too thick and tough. I had to fight the skin every bite...

Went there for the high score. Turned out to be a sham. So sad... Note to my self, always read the reviews.

The menu has changed since the last time I've been here. From memory they had karage chicken in ramen which was delicious. This time we ordered the spicy shio tonkatsu ramen which was quite mediocre, there was nothing really special about it. The egg was hard boiled which was a little weird since it's usually runny. The gyoza were delicious though, very soup and flavourful.

Food was great and reasonably priced. Service was good too. Restaurant atmosphere and eating area was nice and clean. Method of ordering on an iPad was pretty cool, simple and easy. Only thing was that the restaurant location was a bit confusing, but overall it was good 👍
Hanna
i don’t think this can be called ramen, it’s not authentic. the noodle is too tough, compared with those I’ve eaten before. The soup looks bad, with some fat on the surface....

Since the change in management in the past year, Ramen-kan has been quite disappointing.. quality and portions have decreased whereas prices have increased a lot.

In the past year, their omurice has increased from $13 to $18.50. The size is sufficient for one person but personally not worth the price when there are better options.

Staff are friendly though!
Lucas
Good service but portion size is too small for the price you are paying for. Got the raw salmon bowl and it was $15.50 so was expecting a good amount of rice and salmon. It was so small portioned that I had to go someplace else just to eat lunch again.
Victoria Dinh
Average ramen. Average service.
They could have added more toppings as with such little toppings, the dishes were actually overpriced.
Location of the restaurant was quite confusing as well. You need to go upstairs and turn left for this restaurant.
Jasmin
Small, cosy place in Haymarket with decent sized portions. We had the tonkatsu ramen - broth was smooth and hearty. Service was fast and attentive

Actual Rating: 3.5

This cute ramen joint tucked away upstairs in its own spot in Haymarket was lovely. We ordered using the touch screen device favoured by Japanese restaurants and were served food very promptly.

The ramen noodles here were of the thicker wavier yellow kind and while the broth in the Tokyo Ramen ($12.50) was nice, I feel like it could have been more flavoursome with a softer egg. Then again, maybe it’s because I had some of the Garlic Miso Ramen too with gyoza ($16.90) which has a very heavy garlic flavour (yum). Overall, I'd say it's not a 4 only because I've had more impressive ramen elsewhere, but for its price it was great value especially since they did BYO for only $2/glass too!
Samuel Widjaja
It's been a while since I visited Ramen Kan and unexpectedly it was really good, they still keep their standard high. I had the Miso Ramen and their broth was flavoursome. It was a balance of umami, salty and spicy (not that spicy). Also suprisingly the Ramen was affordable, 11 dollars for a large + extra 4 dollars for Gyoza.

Overall I had a great experience, food was good and it was welcoming. Would recommend to come again!
BrandonK
I visited Ramen Kan with a friend as a bowl of ramen felt like a great idea on a cold, wet Sunday evening.

Its a quite extensive menu but I settled on the tonkotsu ramen. It was a good bowl of ramen. The stock wasn’t thick and heavy like you get from Gumshara but it was very tasty. The noodles were cooked to perfection too. My only gripe was the serve of meat. It literally comprised two discs of pork. That and half an egg was it.

If there had been a more decent serve of meat, I’d have awarded a 4 but with what I got, I really can’t go past a 3.
Boyfriends Who Cook
Now, we know that Ramen Kan has some questionable Ramen options, and a lot of our Japanese friends think it may not be the best/authentic Ramen that you can get out there in Sydney. However, Ramen Kan is our absolute favourite!

Head here on a rainy evening for the best spicy Ramen you can possibly find! Their Pork Hot and Spicy Ramen is absolutely delicious and BOMB spicy! This is not for the faint-hearted, so choose this one wisely. We head over to Ramen Kan with friends all the time, and here's what we stick to ordering and recommend:
Karaage Chicken - good chunky crispy fried chicken - what's not to love?
Spicy Edamame Beans - a little twist on the traditional bowl of healthy goodness.
If pork is not your thing, Chicken broth Ramen, which is amazing too! You do get an option to make it spicy, and have your Karaage Chicken on the side instead of dunked and soggy.
Last but not the least - Cheese Karaage Ramen - from what we hear, this is one of the whackiest combinations of Ramen here, but weirdly amazingly delicious! Definitely try this - with fried chicken and cheese, you know you're piling up all the calories for the week ahead!

Both my ramen and my companion's had diced cuts of pork. The ramen should at least look slightly like the photo, with pork slices. Would not come back...seems to be leftovers cuts of pork.

Stumbled upon this place and was pleasantly surprised. Wait staff was nice and helpful and my order came out extremely quick. Had the spicy ramen and gyoza and both were delicious. Will go back

Food wasn’t bad. Tsukemen was flavourful. My only issue is that whilst eating there we saw a couple of roaches around the restaurant which kind of put me off...

This Japanese restaurant is hidden in a building at Haymarket, the environment is quiet and relaxing. You order your food on a tablet which is great for introverts :P you can see Paddy's Market/trams from the window while you enjoy your meal. The food taste great, non-oily and authentic. The menu has a range of traditional Japanese dishes, I definitely recommend the place!
Vk2gpz
Very disappointed with the quality of soup and noodle itself. My friend recommended this shop but it turned out it was more like ‘if I make ramen at home this is how it would turn out. ‘
Tortuguita Comiendo
Great down to earth and casual place for ramen and other Japanese meals. It's located upstairs on level one in a dingy old building in Haymarket.

I had cold noodles with a spicy pork broth. It was interesting the noodles are cold but the soup is hot. You are meant to dip the noodles in the soup before you eat it. Delicious but weird.

Wonderful ambience! Atleast I liked it my friend didn’t. Went in time for the happy hour and enjoyed tonkotsu ramen in black garlic was very good .THough they cheap out on the meat , the ramen itself is of high quality. Its not too strong but flavours were there. Sides of renkon chips and crab croquettes were very good . Affordable and highly recommended value for money place .9.8 for the ramen was well worth it.

Delicious ramen! Nice little hidden gem I’d say would recommend to anyone who loves ramen! Really like the iPad concept and lovely staff even without too much interaction

The food takes some time to prepare but trust me it’s worth the wait. Everything in this joint is goood! My family and I come here for their wagyu beef ramen and we always bring friends & family who come to Sydney to try this place. Friendly staff, all Japanese I think. Will come back for sure.

The place to go for ramen slummin'. Follow the map around to Hay St and look for the small sign, grotty stairs and closed door to get into the crowded simple room with friendly cockroaches walking across the benches. All but a couple of customers were Asian which could be a good sign, but then McDonald's is mostly European customers and that doesn't make it a good burger joint. I think here it means good value. Order through the tablet (don't press "order" until you're sure!), come early for the $9 happy hour ramens or the $9 karaage or tempura or others. The tonkotsu ramen had a great rich broth and the pork slices were thin and tasty but then there wasn't much else in the bowl (I'm sure the menu mentioned karaage but I couldn't see any; definitely needed more veges). The gyoza was chewy and a bit bland but the karaage was seriously tender chicken. Beers are under $7. This place is a real mixed bag but it makes for a fun cheap dinner.

While devasted to find that Gumshara was closed I stumbled upon (spent 10 minutes searching ramen restaurants in the CBD) stumbled upon this super authentic Japanese ramen shop. Try the Tonkatsu, one of the best I've had in Australia and rivals hakata gensuke in Melbourne.

Ramen is so so yummy, I forgot to took a photos !!!
Highly recommend Tonkutsu soup!! Salmon bento was really nice as well. Only thing that let me down is it took 30 minute to get our food

This place rocks! Besides the DODGY DODGY elevator every dish I've had from Ramen-Kan has been top notch. Strong attention to detail and service. From the Miso to Shoyu, everything is quite amazing. Nice serving sizes also!

Food: the ramen is almost on par with what you'll have in Japan. I would give it a thumbs up compare to few others ramen kan have did an exceptional job.

Ambiance: location can be odd as it's located upstairs and you'll need to go up stairs and go in with a weird looking door almost seems a bit dodgy to get into the restaurant. Inside is warmth and semi high tech with the iPad for order.

Service: service are kept minimal. All are self service.

Ramen-kan is located in a bit of a sequestered spot, it takes a navigating to get to the upper floor of Oporto.

It was a chilly day and I was ravenously craving for ramen, however, I was bitterly disappointed. Firstly, being two technologically incompetent fools, we had trouble ordering off the iPad and had to call the waiter over multiple times. We ordered the curry cheese ramen with karaage chicken, tonkotsu ramen and gyoza on the side. The curry cheese ramen was okay but a bit sickening towards the end. Tonkotsu is my hallmark ramen, I judge a ramen place based on its tonkotsu. Ramen-kan's tonkotsu was very underwhelming. The broth was weirdly thin yet milky and the tonkotsu flavour was scantly there. Furthermore, the noodles used was artificially wavy and springy and the char siu was a no go.

As much as I hoped this to be my local new ramen joint, I don't think that I will be returning to Ramen-Kan.
Food Is Really Great
Situated near the Haymarket Oporto, up some white stairs, is Ramen-Kan. Before entering I was thinking, "where is this hidden place?! .." but after opening the door to the restaurant, you enter another world!!!
You can order by selecting an item on the iPad-style menu and then the kitchen automatically receives your order. It's really easy to use with descriptive captions of each menu item! Miso ramen was good, it tasted more like tonkotsu than miso though? The venue itself is cosy and has options for both group and solo dining. There's a nicely organised condiments table at the front, alongside self-serve tea and water.
Monica Kwok
Taste not bad, but it is not authentic ramen, more like instant noodles, the soup is fair. The chasiu is not the usually Jap used one, more like a pork dice. But the staff is friendly.

It was a very cold day and I decided I wanted a bowl of ramen! Reading through reviews on the web I settled on Ramen Kan. It's located on the first level. Order is taken with the iPad on the table which contains the menu. One thing I liked with Ramen Kan is that they offer half a Ramen paired with other items so you can try a bit of everything. I decided on the Tonkotsu ramen with gyoza set. The broth was creamy and flavorsome and gyoza was yum! Good find!
Peanutbutter&jelly
Ramen game strong! I had the black garlic one and it was intense! It had this nice smokey flavour that you don't find in many ramen across Sydney. I gotta give them claps for having quite varied and unique ramen choices on the menu. The kaarage chicken wasn't the best I've ever had but it was ok. The prices were also quite reasonable for what you get. Nicely done ramen-kan.
Awesome Sydney Ramen Girl
One of my fave cheap eats during uni. Such a great variety of meals and dishes and the ramen is pretty good also. Price point is amazing and still love coming here

Food: 8.5/10
Service: 8/10
Price: 8/10
Ambiance: 8/10

Ramen Kan is our secret Japanese restaurant. It's the definition of a hidden gem. Located upstairs of a building near Chinatown. You get seated and order via an iPad which creates a more authentic Japanese ambiance.

Food: Ordered the Shio Ramen and Shoyu Ramen with the Pork Gyoza. First of all, the gyoza is juicy and cooked perfectly. You get 3 pieces when you combine it with Ramen. Both ramen dishes were very flavourful - it tasted quite authentic. The broth is really good and the pork was great. There's a table with toppings like fried shallots, chilli powder/oil and more. Complimentary table water and tea to pair with your main dish.

Service: You will be greeted by very friendly and smiley waiters who will seat you. They're very efficient and nice to talk to. The food is delivered within 5 - 10 minutes max so it's great for a quick yet delicious meal.

Price: They have a large range of ramen with prices as low as $11.90 - $15/16. It's very affordable for a nice Japanese restaurant.

Ambience: It's hard to find but look for the sign and stairs or an elevator. It's located on the 2nd floor of the building. It's a bit small but definitely cozy. The beautiful lights across the roof create a warm ambiance.

Ramen-Kan is truly a hidden jewel. The pork gyoza was definitely the star of the night. The pork filling was incredibly juicy; biting into it gave me the same sensation as an XLB. There was quite a big range of ramen to choose from and the tonkostu ramen was delicious. They also have a table set out near the counter with various seasonings to tweak your ramen to your liking.
The ambience was quiet and welcoming. There are no hardcopy menus as there are touch screens which makes the experience more fun. What's great about these devices is that it shows you the statues of your food!
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this restaurant.
Leon
Ramen-Kan is a secluded ramen restaurant situated on the 1st level of a Chinese restaurant. You must look out for the signs and boards on the ground level for directions to the ramen restaurant.

However, the ramen is deceivingly terrible. It does not come with the typical char shiu as advertised, but with pork tendons which are really hard and unchewable.
Zomato_pasta
Been going to ramen kan for a very long time, I hardly go these days but when i do come back, it seems to never fail.

I go more often during lunch and I find the bento boxes rather filling and worth the money.

I've always like the interior and atmosphere of the place and especially sitting outside by the window.

The staff are also very friendly all the time :)

Food: 9/10
Service: 9.5/10
Cost: 8.5/10
Ambiance: 9/10

I love this restaurant. I've eaten here countless of times with my friends and I will continue to do so. The food is affordable and they have a large variety of items on their menu. They use iPad ordering which is very convenient as you can check what you've ordered, or continue ordering whenever you want. The staff are also very polite and greet you as soon as you come in.

I often order the "Karaage chicken curry cheese ramen". I also like how they give you the option of choosing to have no cheese, or chicken separate or no shallots, so you can really eat to your taste. They also have an array of additional toppings near the counter such as chilli powder, shallots, fried garlic and etc. And in case you aren't familiar with using chopsticks, they provide spoon and fork which you can get from the same area. The water is opposite that area and is a self-service.

Food and drinks arrive fairly quickly after ordering, which is excellent. The food generally comes as an adequate portion, not too much nor too little. I've also had side dishes such as sushi, gyoza and croquettes which are nice additions or appetisers to your dish (or they can be your dish!).

Overall, the restaurant looks great and has amazing food to compliment it. It's my favourite Japanese restaurant since it is affordable and convenient to get to. However, I'd love if it opened slightly earlier because I'm just too eager to eat there. :)

In computing there is something that we call "discoverability". The usefulness of the feature/content/application/website is entirely based on the user being able to find it. This brings us to Ramen Kan. The only reason I knew it existed is by reading reviews online.

I texted my partner and said 1235 outside Ramen Kan. It's sort of opposites Paddy's Markets light rail station. I arrived and he was waiting down stair. As we were walking up the stairs he said "not very discoverable".

We went upstairs and were seating right away. Which brings us to the second use of the term discoverable. It had to do with the iPad ordering system and the UI. As anyone who knows me would have predicted I had issues with the UI.

We ordered to miso ramen extra spicy with gyoza and hot green tea. The gyoza came out 3 each ($4 addition to the ramen price.) I enjoyed them. The broth and the noodles were good. Nice pieces of cha siu pork. Definitely saltier as it gets to the bottom of the bowl.

I enjoyed it a lot. It is my partners' favourite so far.
Jacob
Not sure whether it's authentic ramen or not but it's sure damn tasty. I ordered garlic miso ramen the garlic sauce it's the most fragrant one I have ever tried in my full-of-spices-asian life. 4.5 might a little too much but it's worth it
Jen
Cute little ramen place. Ordered the chicken teriyaki udon and it was quite delicious. Prices were pretty good between around $13. Food came pretty fast and the atmosphere seemed pretty good
Lin
absolutely love the order system, you can take time choosing the dish you want and it's very convenience. The bento boxes are dilicious, and all the side dish taste good as well. Definately will comeback and try some more.

Ramenkan has been around for many years. To be honest, I'm very impressed with how they managed to keep the quality of their service to be pretty good for these many years. Ramen, udon and rice dishes are about $11-13 per regular serving. Half size order is available for some of them. I like their ramen. Although they are not the best ramen place in around the area, I reckon this is a place where you get fed some decent Japanese food with a reasonable price.

Wow for Ramen Kan.
Tucked away upstairs through a very inconspicuous door is the very best ramen ive ever had. And ive tried a few including around Japan. The broth is deep and rich in flavour, the noodles cooked perfectly, the pork cut thick. All i can say is 'Youve got to try it'.
I had Tonkotsu: pork based soup, egg, shallot, leek, pickled ginger and garlic chilli sauce.
Best in Sydney for sure.
Poorval Dhotre
Not the best ramen in Sydney but among the better ones in my opinion. The place is a personification of "above average". The food, the ambience, the prices- all above average at best. If you are in the vicinity and craving Japanese, you can give this place a shot.
LittleAsianGirl
Love this little ramen place. Not easy to find, tucked away upstairs. Delicious ramen, and great service. Decent pricing. Love this hidden gem.
Ruth C
This place is a hidden gem right near the markets. You have to walk about some not-so-friendly stairs to get to this place. Upon reaching the top you realise you are okay and it isn't that dodgy. I got the negi ramen ($13.90) and wasn't disappointed. They also have a self service area for extra toppings etc!
Peter Osman
A solid addition to the proliferation of ramen joints clustered around Market City and Chinatown. One big bonus is the large and varied menu, so you'll almost always find something you'll be interested in trying. I had the karaage cheese ramen and loved it.
2hungryysisters
I love the food at Ramen-Kan. It's the perfect place to get a good Japanese feed for not a lot of money and their food is really yummy. The service is also really good and the wait for food isnt very long. So far, ive never had a bad experience at Ramen-Kan and i hope i never do since i love eating here.
I highly recommend their karage cheese curry ramen and their kaisen don. Those are my two top picks when i eat here. Their omurice is also pretty yummy but seriously, you cant go wrong with either the ramen or the kaisen don.
Ive been a returning customer here for some years now and that isn't likely to change anytime soon.

Hidden in the first floor on hay st, ramen-kan just like a wonderland among the noisy Chinatown. U will still questioning yourself when u walk up the stairs "is this a good place to go" until push the door and go through it. Typical japanese decorations with a bar on one end. Choose a seat by the window and you can enjoy the busy street view while sit back and relax. Clever touch screen system, nice music and i think one of the best ramen u can have in sydney. My friend claims that they have the best karage chicken as well. The soup is decent and very suitable for this winter season. Go and have a try!
Adam
went in by zomato viewing and was blown away by the pleasant serendipitous dining experience. The tan tan ramen was out of this world and plum wine was an unforgettable way to end the meal. Will be seeing a lot more of me! Earned yourselves a loyal customer, arigato!
Snapsta El
I will give 4 stars due to value for money. I really enjoyed the food. I really liked the garlic flakes (yes these little things make a big difference!!) You get plenty to chose from. Laid back atmosphere and you get to order from the screen which is always handy. Only annoyance I have about this place is that they wouldn't give me veggie dumplings to replace the pork ones that came with my meal (even though the person I was with ordered them but they would only allow me to order pork with my meal!)
YummyGranadilla
Love the ramen here! Don't forget to grab the free toppings. The gyozas are okay. The decor and atmosphere feels somewhat dated, but one of the best ramen I've had in Sydney.
Chris
Good quality but heavy Ramen dishes. Fast service with typical Japanese efficiency and politeness. Tucked away on top of Opporto, you can either take the stairs or a few doors down is a lift.
Derek Lee
Hidden away near hay st this ramen place doesn't look like the best place to go via the stairs but once inside it is a hidden gem. It's been awhile since I have been here and I like the added touch of using a touch screen to order dishes and drinks to see what's available. The atmosphere is nice and not to noisy and usually has music playing as well. Decided to go and order Teri chicken don as I usually like to get then ramen during winter time. The meal was served with site fried chicken and vegetables and teriyaki sauce and also came with a mini salad and miso soup. I found the chicken to dry and not enough teriyaki sauce I had to add some soya sauce and had too much onions. I also ended IP sharing some spicy edaname, goyza and spicy chicken avocado and crunchy garlic roll which was very spicy but had a nice kick to it. I also like that they now have the option to get a half ramen set with gyoza for an extra $4 if you aren't that hungry for a full bowl of ramen, and that you also have extra ramen toppings for free! going to get that next time.
Kekk
Solid, affordable. Consistent and good quality dishes. I particularly like their ramen for the pork - thick, meaty slices that compare favourably to the thin, fatty circles that are traditional elsewhere. Nice atmosphere.

Popular with the university crowd, Ramen-kan offers up various types of Ramens and Bento Boxes. The grilled eel and teryaki salmon bento boxes have always been a favourite of mine - the croquette that comes part of the bento combination is creamy and delicious! It has been a while since I've had a ramen here but I have always found their tonkotsu to be creamier than other ramen places.
Weekendfoodescapes
You enter usually via a really dirty lift or take the dirty stairs. It's not open on Mondays so you'll see the stairwell and the lift usually blocked and locked on Mondays. . As you enter, it's decked out with lots of wooden brown tables. . These days, you can order by touch screen which I quite like.

I loved this place for it's great food and price until last Friday's horrible experience. I took my friend, her mum and her auntie for lunch there. They ordered bento box, ramen, seaweed salad, gyoza and a soft drink. As they were going to share everything, they asked for some spare bowls. And the waitress brought the bowls with a COCKROACH in it!! As soon as the waitress put the bowls on the table, she noticed that there was a COCKROACH in it, said 'sorry' and changed the bowls. In the end, we were charged full price for the bill. As a regular customer before this experience, I decided not to go to this place again. I might miss some tasty Japanese food with a cheap price, but I don't want to go to any restaurant dirty like this.
I'm Still Hungry
While Ramen Kan doesn’t explicitly advertise it, its tonkotsu broth is based on a paitan formulation – a thinner but milkier interpretation of normal tonkotsu (though paitan can be chicken broth as well). As such, it is milkier in texture, without the same collagen-induced heaviness of a traditional tonkotsu. There’s a little bit of porky flavour in the soup that cuts through the saltiness, to be commended. One particularly nice aspect about the broth? It’s not very oily. Good for those that avoid tonkotsu due to oil. Drink up!

The one downside is that there’s not enough punchiness with the overall flavour of the broth. Not enough umami, not enough of an x-factor that makes it stand above other broths. However, it does rub shoulders with them.

Bad service. The food has too much msg but for the price I think its alright. However, there were no signs at the place saying "NO FOOD/DRINKS FROM ELSEWHERE IS ALLOWED" or something like that, and as I was drinking my iced tea which i had in my bag, the waitress told me that I wasnt allowed to drink it at their place.. i mean thats all good. Then she rudely took MY iced tea that i paid for inside the counter and never gave it back! Also, as our friends came late, they ordered as we finished our food, the same waitress threw the bill on our table hinting us to pay meanwhile our friends's dishes are still cooking, the waitress rudely asked to take my boyfriend's noodles away when he still had his chopsticks in his bowl trying to finish the little bit AND she just took his bowl away.
VERY BAD EXPERIENCE.

Nothing is better than a hot bowl of ramen on a cold winter's night. The entrance to Ramen Kan is a dodgey looking stairwell on the side of Oportos, however upon entering the establishment you are greeted with a modern and elegant interior. Waiters carry iPads at their side to take the customers orders. It is quite a small establishment in that their tables are mainly suited to groups of 4. For the 5 of us, it was a bit of a squeeze on the table, but I didn't mind too much. We ordered quite a few side dishes and at $3 each who could resist. Tonkotsu Ramen- $10.90 Every time I try a new ramen place, I tend to order the classic Tonkotsu Ramen . The broth is not as thick as other places but it goes down smoothly with a punch of milky flavour, the usual for a Tonkotsu Ramen. I finished almost all my broth because there was something about the flavour that kept drawing me back. The noodles were average I must admit. A bit too soft for my liking, but I can't complain too
Four Fifth On Food
This was my third time visit to this small restaurant in the Chinatown area. This place is pretty hidden as patrons need to use stairs because the lift is often broken. Especially during night time, it could be hard to find for the first timers. FYI, this place is on the second level of the building next to Wagaya. Four of us arrived around 730 on a weekend and the place was not that busy so we could get seats asap. Dived into the menu and we decided to order these: Kogashi ramen ($10.90) Karaage chicken curry ramen ($11.50) Tan Tan ramen ($10.50) Speaking about portion, I never doubt Ramen-Kan as most of their servings are quite generous, especially their ramens and omurice. I remember last time I ordered omurice and was quite taken aback with the portion and ended up not finishing it -_-; After tasting our noodles, all of us agreed that the noodles were a bit disappointing. They felt undercooked. Fortunately, they made up for it with a good serving of pork/chicken meats. Unatama don

We also shared the Teriyaki Mentaiko Tofu ($3.00). At just $3.00 for three pieces, it was a bargain. I love eating anything with mentaiko, so I really enjoyed the liberal heaping of mentaiko on the top, but it got a little bit too salty for me after awhile, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you can stomach it. The contrast of salty and sweet flavours with the teriyaki sauce and mentaiko was nice with the deep fried tofu.

It's hidden from the main road and if you blink, you may miss it. Since changing management recently, the food seems to taste better and the portions much larger. It serves authentic Japanese food and you can tell from the ingredients that it is fresh. They seem to have increased their selection and the prices haven't really gone up since my uni days or have actually remained the same. The 'Takoyaki' which was served as 3 pieces on a bed of cabbage was only 3 dollars! It was piping hot and fried to perfection and coated with that delicious Japanese mayo. I don't like bonito flakes so they were pushed to the side. The 'Chicken Nan Ban Bento Box' is from their lunch specials and it is well worth its money. The only negatives were that the fried chicken had soya sauce on the bottom which made it soggy and the agedashi tofu wasn't fried enough which again was rather soggy. The 'Tempura Udon' was again very decent in size and taste. The tempura was crispy and the noodles were al

It’s all over the blog reviews I’ve read, but the dodgy old elevator’s been decommissioned. Visiting Ramen Kan now means you need to walk up a filthy staircase into this amazing little establishment. It’s worth it for their ramen! Ramen Kan’s Tonkotsu Ramen Kan offers up a fantastic flavour filled broth. It’s thinner than Gumshara’s and the chashu is nowhere near as nice as Ippudo’s. The egg was my favourite one so far – nicely flavoured. The noodles were a great texture and thickness. The broth, on the whole, offered a good, solid experience, aside from an overabundance of shredded onions on top. Another highly recommended establishment! Each bowl of ramen comes with a tiny bowl of condiments. You can add roast garlic, chilli paste and fried shallots. I think it really adds a nice 'kick' to the flavour of your broth! Servings were either smaller than other ramen places or the broth was super 'thin' but I was able to finish one entire bowl for once.

Ramen-Kan is an established ramen restaurant located above Oportos near Sydney Entertainment Centre that offers a variety of cheap and efficient meals.

A Japanese restaurant often conjures up imagines of refined and meticulous preparation and presentation. I wouldn't exactly fit this restaurant into that stereotype. However, it is a hearty Japanese on a budget! The cocktails were fairly cheap ($7) though it resembled more like mocktails. Without the cocktails, the meal itself was under $15. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable, cosy and hearty Chinatown secret.

Regardless of my predisposition about Japanese dishes being similar to some dishes I eat at home, these dishes are well seasoned and they gave us generous 20x10cm sizzler dishes, so that's quite a big serving. I liked the mayo, but the Yaki Udon noodles were a bit too salty for me, and I'm not a fan of too much rice

I chose the tonkatsu ramen.. The ramen was nice. Probably not the best I've ever tasted but it was still good. With so much competition in the area its hard, but Ramen-Kan still serves up a pretty decent ramen.

After a long absence, we stopped by Ramen Kan for a revisit. Since we noticed the redesigned menu, we did wondered if the management or chef was also changed?

The overall meal was pretty satisfying. If you are a fan of Japanese cuisine, this place does a really good job at it. Definitely somewhere to go and meet up with friends for a quick dinner or lunch. Plus the service was pretty good. When I left, the restauran was nearly full and there was about 10-20 people waiting in that small area near the lift to get a table. As looks like a walk in restaurant, expect the queues at peak hours.

For lunch, Ramen Raff and I dropped in Ramen Kan for some Ramen goodness.

I finished the whole thing and spooned up all of the broth. Also perhaps a little oily, but very nice.

If ramen’s not your thing, their homemade gyozas (Japanese dumplings) are delightful too.

No matter what time we arrive at Ramen they always seem to be busy but we have never had a long wait for a table. The staff seem to have a nac of squeezing people in. Also the food and service is quick so the table turnover is quite fast. On this occasion we are having a quick bite to eat with friends prior to the State of Origin Game in Sydney. I am a l

This is one of those restaurants located on the top level, and to get up, you have to get on a tiny elevator. There are only about a dozen small tables so the waitstaff were very quick and efficient. Ramen-Kan Menu Sorry for my lack of memory on the prices as I was too anxious to try ramen in Sydney. Lychee Calpris $3.50 A very nice japanese soda with lychee flavour. Pork Gyoza's $6 approx. The Gyoza's are pan-fried to crispiness on the outside, and was moist and silky on the inside. Chilli Takoyaki $5.50 The sauce was very tangy and tasty. It was a nice change because most Perth restaurants who offer this dish, serve it with japanese BBQ sauce and mayo. Tonkotsu Ramen $11.80 The soup was thick. The noodles were slightly overcooked. Crab and Corn Ramen $12 approx. The broth was sweeter because of the combination of crab and corn. I love it how all ramen restaurants have those giant spoons. I really want to find out where I can get one!

The tonkotsu was light and milky in texture, it didn't taste much of pork to be honest, and lacked the collagen effect (sticky lips) - not much of a knockout, though however it was still pleasant in a subtle manner.

We step into the discreet doorway with the blase confidence of a local now and ascend the lift to the first floor. We're here for lunch today and, as usual, the place is full of noodle-slurping patrons.

I've been to the Bondi Junction shop a few years ago but this was during pre food blog days so I'm glad to be visiting this popular hidden gem with camera today. The first task was finding the entrance and sadly I failed and walked up the next door stairw

Ramen Kan does a decent ramen, good broth. And the $3 side dishes are brilliant value. The joint is uber popular...

Raman Kan has very high rating on Urbanspoon, but may be we had really high expectations of Japanese ramen we found their ramen a little bit disappointed but the other dishes were very nice! Little Monster loved the Crab Croquette , he demanded for a second serve straight away! Agedashi Tofu was our next entree. I tried their Tonkotsu Ramen - it was a bit disappointing because the broth was not rich enough. (I think Brisbane’s Hakataya Ramen is much more authentic) But I do love the half-boiled egg! Mr F had a Chicken Katsu Don – he said the dish was only average compared to the ones he had in Japan. Ramen Kan Address: 90 Hay St Haymarket (China Town) NSW 2000 Phone: 02 9211 6677

I very nearly didn’t go here. Someone had recommended it to Calypso and we were totally stumped trying to find it. Surely it’s not accessed by this extremely dodgy looking freight lift? It is. But once we got out of the creepy lift and got into the restau

When we entered the restaurant we waited a couple of minutes and were then seated. We perused their extensive menu, almost got sidetracked by some don, but found our way back to the ramen and ordered a bowl each. The portions were huge and they were so wa

Ramen Kan is a little Japanese restaurant tucked away upstairs, accessed by a dodgy looking lift on Hay Street next to Cold Rock. Yes, the lift is a bit dirty-looking and extremely slow and probably needs replacing but don't be put off! Once those lift doors open you will be rewarded with a dining area complete with decorative touches like bamboo and pebbles, and of course fantastic Japanese food.

Another day gone, means another day for Jap! Further to my consistent cravings for true Japanese food, my sister took us to Ramen Kan. These noodle houses are plentiful in Japan and are found almost as often as any chain fast food outlet here. As soon as

A nice change. Food in Sydney is quite expensive and after doing all the tourist stuff, we realized that it was quite difficult to find a good meal for under $20.00..., unless you are having either burgers and chips or fish and chips. After being there for about a week my daughters and I accidentally discovered this place. (diagonally across of the Paddy's Market entrance) We were uncertain about eating there, but upon checking it out, we saw some patrons enjoying their meals and decided to give it a try. We were glad we did! We had the unagi bowl, chicken karaage ramen and the tonkotsu ramen. All were simply delicious, It was a welcomed change from the burgers and chips that we had subsisted on for the past five days.
From Hilo, Hawaii

Best Tan-Tan Ramen!!. Sometimes I get cravings for very specific food and Tan-Tan Ramen is one of them. The first time I had Ta-Tan Ramen was in New York. So tasty I practically forced the customer next to me to try some. (Food makes me do unusual things..) In Australia I kept searching for a Tan-Tan Ramen that was as good, but they were always watery. And then I found this dingy elevator up to Ramen-Kan...and found their Tan-Tan-Ramen! I find it hard to choose anything else, although the ramen with pork and shredded shallots is light but satisfying. During peak hours it is hard to get a good seat, but the food is worth it. It's perfect when it's quiet though and I can have a bowl of Tan-Tan, and read a good book in a nice room. It's also great to come with a partner and share lots of entrees and your mains! Nom nom.

Nice food but bad management and service. This place is a regular restaurant we go to have lunch or dinner only because they have a wide selection of meals at a good price range HOWEVER, there were many times that I have felt like it was a bad experience for me, firstly, the location is hard to access a few times it was closed yes it is closed on Mondays and also a number of times the lift was faulty and we thought the restaurant was not opened so we wet elsewhere. The main thing I would like to emphasise is my very bad experience with their service which is why I was obliged to write this review. During the orders, I had clearly said I had cancelled a meal and wanted to other choice, the waitress could not speak clear english and repeated our orders before we all placed our orders. So as the dishes came out we were puzzled to why there was an extra order, we then realised that the waitress had put the extra order down that was meant to be the one that was cancelled, we informed her that we did not order this and that it was cancelled however she insisted that we did order that dish and that we pay for it as it could not be cancelled. So they made the mistake of making the extra dish why should we pay for their own mistake, I have worked in hospitality before and if the order was wrong I was learnt to take it back not insist they pay for it. The manager came out and tried to argue with us as well. Really unhappy and I don't think I will go there again from the bad experience. I felt really disrespected.

Rude waitress!. I would always come here with my friends and always enjoyed the service and food but not this time! My sister and I had come in with a drink that we knew to put to the side but the waitress at the time regardless told us to move our drinks in a very rude way. We didn't mind this at first but upon having our order taken, I took out one of my pastries to take a photo of (NOT EAT) and the waitress came back in a very rude tone telling us that takeaway is not allow. My sister told her that I was only taking a photo and waitress rolled her eyes at us and walked away. We didn't feel comfortable anymore so we got our stuff and left. My sister approached the rude waitress before we left and told her why we were leaving and the waitress was giving her attitude and trying to argue back! That is not a display of great service behaviour! This was on a Thursday afternoon! Will not be back again until she is gone!

Nice place, didn't enjoy my dish. Had the Karaage Chicken Ramen, personally I didn't enjoy it. The noodels and soup were good but the chicken was too soft, perhaps even slightly undercooked.
The atmosphere is very nice, and the wait stuff was super nice too.

With the restaurant signboard, easy to find. Next to Oporto. Service is good. Ramen is just OK.. Not special.
