Shio ramen. Some great things about my meal - well cooked noodles (most important), light but flavoursome broth and tender roast pork. A bit of corn and butter on the side added an element of variation which was nice. Some reviews have pointed out the visible pork fat on the surface of the broth which was also in my bowl but not uncommon in my opinion.
Food was great and reasonably priced. Service was good too. Restaurant atmosphere and eating area was nice and clean. Method of ordering on an iPad was pretty cool, simple and easy. Only thing was that the restaurant location was a bit confusing, but overall it was good đź‘Ť
It's been a while since I visited Ramen Kan and unexpectedly it was really good, they still keep their standard high. I had the Miso Ramen and their broth was flavoursome. It was a balance of umami, salty and spicy (not that spicy). Also suprisingly the Ramen was affordable, 11 dollars for a large + extra 4 dollars for Gyoza.
Overall I had a great experience, food was good and it was welcoming. Would recommend to come again!
Now, we know that Ramen Kan has some questionable Ramen options, and a lot of our Japanese friends think it may not be the best/authentic Ramen that you can get out there in Sydney. However, Ramen Kan is our absolute favourite!Â
Head here on a rainy evening for the best spicy Ramen you can possibly find! Their Pork Hot and Spicy Ramen is absolutely delicious and BOMB spicy! This is not for the faint-hearted, so choose this one wisely. We head over to Ramen Kan with friends all the time, and here's what we stick to ordering and recommend:Â
Karaage Chicken - good chunky crispy fried chicken - what's not to love?Â
Spicy Edamame Beans - a little twist on the traditional bowl of healthy goodness.Â
If pork is not your thing, Chicken broth Ramen, which is amazing too! You do get an option to make it spicy, and have your Karaage Chicken on the side instead of dunked and soggy.
Last but not the least - Cheese Karaage Ramen - from what we hear, this is one of the whackiest combinations of Ramen here, but weirdly amazingly delicious! Definitely try this - with fried chicken and cheese, you know you're piling up all the calories for the week ahead!
Stumbled upon this place and was pleasantly surprised. Wait staff was nice and helpful and my order came out extremely quick. Had the spicy ramen and gyoza and both were delicious. Will go back
This Japanese restaurant is hidden in a building at Haymarket, the environment is quiet and relaxing. You order your food on a tablet which is great for introverts :P you can see Paddy's Market/trams from the window while you enjoy your meal. The food taste great, non-oily and authentic. The menu has a range of traditional Japanese dishes, I definitely recommend the place!
Great down to earth and casual place for ramen and other Japanese meals. It's located upstairs on level one in a dingy old building in Haymarket.
I had cold noodles with a spicy pork broth. It was interesting the noodles are cold but the soup is hot. You are meant to dip the noodles in the soup before you eat it. Delicious but weird.
Wonderful ambience! Atleast I liked it my friend didn’t. Went in time for the happy hour and enjoyed tonkotsu ramen in black garlic was very good .THough they cheap out on the meat , the ramen itself is of high quality. Its not too strong but flavours were there. Sides of renkon chips and crab croquettes were very good . Affordable and highly recommended value for money place .9.8 for the ramen was well worth it.
Delicious ramen! Nice little hidden gem I’d say would recommend to anyone who loves ramen! Really like the iPad concept and lovely staff even without too much interaction
The food takes some time to prepare but trust me it’s worth the wait. Everything in this joint is goood! My family and I come here for their wagyu beef ramen and we always bring friends & family who come to Sydney to try this place. Friendly staff, all Japanese I think. Will come back for sure.
The place to go for ramen slummin'.  Follow the map around to Hay St and look for the small sign, grotty stairs and closed door to get into the crowded simple room with friendly cockroaches walking across the benches. All but a couple of customers were Asian which could be a good sign, but then McDonald's is mostly European customers and that doesn't make it a good burger joint. I think here it means good value. Order through the tablet (don't press "order" until you're sure!), come early for the $9 happy hour ramens or the $9 karaage or tempura or others. The tonkotsu ramen had a great rich broth and the pork slices were thin and tasty but then there wasn't much else in the bowl (I'm sure the menu mentioned karaage but I couldn't see any; definitely needed more veges). The gyoza was chewy and a bit bland but the karaage was seriously tender chicken. Beers are under $7. This place is a real mixed bag but it makes for a fun cheap dinner.
While devasted to find that Gumshara was closed I stumbled upon (spent 10 minutes searching ramen restaurants in the CBD) stumbled upon this super authentic Japanese ramen shop. Try the Tonkatsu, one of the best I've had in Australia and rivals hakata gensuke in Melbourne.
Ramen is so so yummy, I forgot to took a photos !!!
Highly recommend Tonkutsu soup!! Salmon bento was really nice as well. Only thing that let me down is it took 30 minute to get our food
This place rocks! Besides the DODGY DODGY elevator every dish I've had from Ramen-Kan has been top notch. Strong attention to detail and service. From the Miso to Shoyu, everything is quite amazing. Nice serving sizes also!
Food: the ramen is almost on par with what you'll have in Japan. I would give it a thumbs up compare to few others ramen kan have did an exceptional job.
Ambiance: location can be odd as it's located upstairs and you'll need to go up stairs and go in with a weird looking door almost seems a bit dodgy to get into the restaurant. Inside is warmth and semi high tech with the iPad for order.
Service: service are kept minimal. All are self service.
Food Is Really Great

Situated near the Haymarket Oporto, up some white stairs, is Ramen-Kan. Before entering I was thinking, "where is this hidden place?! .." but after opening the door to the restaurant, you enter another world!!!
You can order by selecting an item on the iPad-style menu and then the kitchen automatically receives your order. It's really easy to use with descriptive captions of each menu item! Miso ramen was good, it tasted more like tonkotsu than miso though? The venue itself is cosy and has options for both group and solo dining. There's a nicely organised condiments table at the front, alongside self-serve tea and water.
It was a very cold day and I decided I wanted a bowl of ramen! Reading through reviews on the web I settled on Ramen Kan. It's located on the first level. Order is taken with the iPad on the table which contains the menu. One thing I liked with Ramen Kan is that they offer half a Ramen paired with other items so you can try a bit of everything. I decided on the Tonkotsu ramen with gyoza set. The broth was creamy and flavorsome and gyoza was yum! Good find!
Ramen game strong! I had the black garlic one and it was intense! It had this nice smokey flavour that you don't find in many ramen across Sydney. I gotta give them claps for having quite varied and unique ramen choices on the menu. The kaarage chicken wasn't the best I've ever had but it was ok. The prices were also quite reasonable for what you get. Nicely done ramen-kan.

One of my fave cheap eats during uni. Such a great variety of meals and dishes and the ramen is pretty good also. Price point is amazing and still love coming here

Ramen Kan is our secret Japanese restaurant. It's the definition of a hidden gem. Located upstairs of a building near Chinatown. You get seated and order via an iPad which creates a more authentic Japanese ambiance.
Food: Ordered the Shio Ramen and Shoyu Ramen with the Pork Gyoza. First of all, the gyoza is juicy and cooked perfectly. You get 3 pieces when you combine it with Ramen. Both ramen dishes were very flavourful - it tasted quite authentic. The broth is really good and the pork was great. There's a table with toppings like fried shallots, chilli powder/oil and more. Complimentary table water and tea to pair with your main dish.
Service: You will be greeted by very friendly and smiley waiters who will seat you. They're very efficient and nice to talk to. The food is delivered within 5 - 10 minutes max so it's great for a quick yet delicious meal.
Price: They have a large range of ramen with prices as low as $11.90 - $15/16. It's very affordable for a nice Japanese restaurant.
Ambience: It's hard to find but look for the sign and stairs or an elevator. It's located on the 2nd floor of the building. It's a bit small but definitely cozy. The beautiful lights across the roof create a warm ambiance.
Ramen-Kan is truly a hidden jewel. The pork gyoza was definitely the star of the night. The pork filling was incredibly juicy; biting into it gave me the same sensation as an XLB. There was quite a big range of ramen to choose from and the tonkostu ramen was delicious. They also have a table set out near the counter with various seasonings to tweak your ramen to your liking.
The ambience was quiet and welcoming. There are no hardcopy menus as there are touch screens which makes the experience more fun. What's great about these devices is that it shows you the statues of your food!
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this restaurant.
Been going to ramen kan for a very long time, I hardly go these days but when i do come back, it seems to never fail.
I go more often during lunch and I find the bento boxes rather filling and worth the money.
I've always like the interior and atmosphere of the place and especially sitting outside by the window.
The staff are also very friendly all the time :)

I love this restaurant. I've eaten here countless of times with my friends and I will continue to do so. The food is affordable and they have a large variety of items on their menu. They use iPad ordering which is very convenient as you can check what you've ordered, or continue ordering whenever you want. The staff are also very polite and greet you as soon as you come in.Â
I often order the "Karaage chicken curry cheese ramen". I also like how they give you the option of choosing to have no cheese, or chicken separate or no shallots, so you can really eat to your taste. They also have an array of additional toppings near the counter such as chilli powder, shallots, fried garlic and etc. And in case you aren't familiar with using chopsticks, they provide spoon and fork which you can get from the same area. The water is opposite that area and is a self-service.
Food and drinks arrive fairly quickly after ordering, which is excellent. The food generally comes as an adequate portion, not too much nor too little. I've also had side dishes such as sushi, gyoza and croquettes which are nice additions or appetisers to your dish (or they can be your dish!).
Overall, the restaurant looks great and has amazing food to compliment it. It's my favourite Japanese restaurant since it is affordable and convenient to get to. However, I'd love if it opened slightly earlier because I'm just too eager to eat there. :)
In computing there is something that we call "discoverability". The usefulness of the feature/content/application/website is entirely based on the user being able to find it. This brings us to Ramen Kan. The only reason I knew it existed is by reading reviews online.Â
I texted my partner and said 1235 outside Ramen Kan. It's sort of opposites Paddy's Markets light rail station. I arrived and he was waiting down stair. As we were walking up the stairs he said "not very discoverable".
We went upstairs and were seating right away. Which brings us to the second use of the term discoverable. It had to do with the iPad ordering system and the UI. As anyone who knows me would have predicted I had issues with the UI.Â
We ordered to miso ramen extra spicy with gyoza and hot green tea. The gyoza came out 3 each ($4 addition to the ramen price.) I enjoyed them. The broth and the noodles were good. Nice pieces of cha siu pork. Definitely saltier as it gets to the bottom of the bowl.Â
I enjoyed it a lot. It is my partners' favourite so far.
Not sure whether it's authentic ramen or not but it's sure damn tasty. I ordered garlic miso ramen the garlic sauce it's the most fragrant one I have ever tried in my full-of-spices-asian life. 4.5 might a little too much but it's worth it
Cute little ramen place. Ordered the chicken teriyaki udon and it was quite delicious. Prices were pretty good between around $13. Food came pretty fast and the atmosphere seemed pretty good
absolutely love the order system, you can take time choosing the dish you want and it's very convenience. The bento boxes are dilicious, and all the side dish taste good as well. Definately will comeback and try some more.
Wow for Ramen Kan.
Tucked away upstairs through a very inconspicuous door is the very best ramen ive ever had. And ive tried a few including around Japan. The broth is deep and rich in flavour, the noodles cooked perfectly, the pork cut thick. All i can say is 'Youve got to try it'.
I had Tonkotsu: pork based soup, egg, shallot, leek, pickled ginger and garlic chilli sauce.
Best in Sydney for sure.
Not the best ramen in Sydney but among the better ones in my opinion. The place is a personification of "above average". The food, the ambience, the prices- all above average at best. If you are in the vicinity and craving Japanese, you can give this place a shot.
Love this little ramen place. Not easy to find, tucked away upstairs. Delicious ramen, and great service. Decent pricing. Love this hidden gem.
This place is a hidden gem right near the markets. You have to walk about some not-so-friendly stairs to get to this place. Upon reaching the top you realise you are okay and it isn't that dodgy. I got the negi ramen ($13.90) and wasn't disappointed. They also have a self service area for extra toppings etc!
A solid addition to the proliferation of ramen joints clustered around Market City and Chinatown. One big bonus is the large and varied menu, so you'll almost always find something you'll be interested in trying. I had the karaage cheese ramen and loved it.
I love the food at Ramen-Kan. It's the perfect place to get a good Japanese feed for not a lot of money and their food is really yummy. The service is also really good and the wait for food isnt very long. So far, ive never had a bad experience at Ramen-Kan and i hope i never do since i love eating here.
I highly recommend their karage cheese curry ramen and their kaisen don. Those are my two top picks when i eat here. Their omurice is also pretty yummy but seriously, you cant go wrong with either the ramen or the kaisen don.
Ive been a returning customer here for some years now and that isn't likely to change anytime soon.
Hidden in the first floor on hay st, ramen-kan just like a wonderland among the noisy Chinatown. U will still questioning yourself when u walk up the stairs "is this a good place to go" until push the door and go through it. Typical japanese decorations with a bar on one end. Choose a seat by the window and you can enjoy the busy street view while sit back and relax. Clever touch screen system, nice music and i think one of the best ramen u can have in sydney. My friend claims that they have the best karage chicken as well. The soup is decent and very suitable for this winter season. Go and have a try!
went in by zomato viewing and was blown away by the pleasant serendipitous dining experience. The tan tan ramen was out of this world and plum wine was an unforgettable way to end the meal. Will be seeing a lot more of me! Earned yourselves a loyal customer, arigato!
I will give 4 stars due to value for money. I really enjoyed the food. I really liked the garlic flakes (yes these little things make a big difference!!) You get plenty to chose from. Laid back atmosphere and you get to order from the screen which is always handy. Only annoyance I have about this place is that they wouldn't give me veggie dumplings to replace the pork ones that came with my meal (even though the person I was with ordered them but they would only allow me to order pork with my meal!)
Love the ramen here! Don't forget to grab the free toppings. The gyozas are okay. The decor and atmosphere feels somewhat dated, but one of the best ramen I've had in Sydney.
Good quality but heavy Ramen dishes. Fast service with typical Japanese efficiency and politeness. Tucked away on top of Opporto, you can either take the stairs or a few doors down is a lift.
Hidden away near hay st this ramen place doesn't look like the best place to go via the stairs but once inside it is a hidden gem. It's been awhile since I have been here and I like the added touch of using a touch screen to order dishes and drinks to see what's available. The atmosphere is nice and not to noisy and usually has music playing as well. Decided to go and order Teri chicken don as I usually like to get then ramen during winter time. The meal was served with site fried chicken and vegetables and teriyaki sauce and also came with a mini salad and miso soup. I found the chicken to dry and not enough teriyaki sauce I had to add some soya sauce and had too much onions. I also ended IP sharing some spicy edaname, goyza and spicy chicken avocado and crunchy garlic roll which was very spicy but had a nice kick to it. I also like that they now have the option to get a half ramen set with gyoza for an extra $4 if you aren't that hungry for a full bowl of ramen, and that you also have extra ramen toppings for free! going to get that next time.
Solid, affordable. Consistent and good quality dishes. I particularly like their ramen for the pork - thick, meaty slices that compare favourably to the thin, fatty circles that are traditional elsewhere. Nice atmosphere.
Popular with the university crowd, Ramen-kan offers up various types of Ramens and Bento Boxes. The grilled eel and teryaki salmon bento boxes have always been a favourite of mine - the croquette that comes part of the bento combination is creamy and delicious! It has been a while since I've had a ramen here but I have always found their tonkotsu to be creamier than other ramen places.
You enter usually via a really dirty lift or take the dirty stairs. It's not open on Mondays so you'll see the stairwell and the lift usually blocked and locked on Mondays. . As you enter, it's decked out with lots of wooden brown tables. . These days, you can order by touch screen which I quite like.
While Ramen Kan doesn’t explicitly advertise it, its tonkotsu broth is based on a paitan formulation – a thinner but milkier interpretation of normal tonkotsu (though paitan can be chicken broth as well). As such, it is milkier in texture, without the same collagen-induced heaviness of a traditional tonkotsu. There’s a little bit of porky flavour in the soup that cuts through the saltiness, to be commended. One particularly nice aspect about the broth? It’s not very oily. Good for those that avoid tonkotsu due to oil. Drink up!
The one downside is that there’s not enough punchiness with the overall flavour of the broth. Not enough umami, not enough of an x-factor that makes it stand above other broths. However, it does rub shoulders with them.
Nothing is better than a hot bowl of ramen on a cold winter's night. The entrance to Ramen Kan is a dodgey looking stairwell on the side of Oportos, however upon entering the establishment you are greeted with a modern and elegant interior. Waiters carry iPads at their side to take the customers orders. It is quite a small establishment in that their tables are mainly suited to groups of 4. For the 5 of us, it was a bit of a squeeze on the table, but I didn't mind too much. We ordered quite a few side dishes and at $3 each who could resist. Tonkotsu Ramen- $10.90 Every time I try a new ramen place, I tend to order the classic Tonkotsu Ramen . The broth is not as thick as other places but it goes down smoothly with a punch of milky flavour, the usual for a Tonkotsu Ramen. I finished almost all my broth because there was something about the flavour that kept drawing me back. The noodles were average I must admit. A bit too soft for my liking, but I can't complain too
This was my third time visit to this small restaurant in the Chinatown area. This place is pretty hidden as patrons need to use stairs because the lift is often broken. Especially during night time, it could be hard to find for the first timers. FYI, this place is on the second level of the building next to Wagaya. Four of us arrived around 730 on a weekend and the place was not that busy so we could get seats asap. Dived into the menu and we decided to order these: Kogashi ramen ($10.90) Karaage chicken curry ramen ($11.50) Tan Tan ramen ($10.50) Speaking about portion, I never doubt Ramen-Kan as most of their servings are quite generous, especially their ramens and omurice. I remember last time I ordered omurice and was quite taken aback with the portion and ended up not finishing it -_-; After tasting our noodles, all of us agreed that the noodles were a bit disappointing. They felt undercooked. Fortunately, they made up for it with a good serving of pork/chicken meats. Unatama don
It’s all over the blog reviews I’ve read, but the dodgy old elevator’s been decommissioned. Visiting Ramen Kan now means you need to walk up a filthy staircase into this amazing little establishment. It’s worth it for their ramen! Ramen Kan’s Tonkotsu Ramen Kan offers up a fantastic flavour filled broth. It’s thinner than Gumshara’s and the chashu is nowhere near as nice as Ippudo’s. The egg was my favourite one so far – nicely flavoured. The noodles were a great texture and thickness. The broth, on the whole, offered a good, solid experience, aside from an overabundance of shredded onions on top. Another highly recommended establishment! Each bowl of ramen comes with a tiny bowl of condiments. You can add roast garlic, chilli paste and fried shallots. I think it really adds a nice 'kick' to the flavour of your broth! Servings were either smaller than other ramen places or the broth was super 'thin' but I was able to finish one entire bowl for once.
Ramen-Kan is an established ramen restaurant located above Oportos near Sydney Entertainment Centre that offers a variety of cheap and efficient meals.
Regardless of my predisposition about Japanese dishes being similar to some dishes I eat at home, these dishes are well seasoned and they gave us generous 20x10cm sizzler dishes, so that's quite a big serving. I liked the mayo, but the Yaki Udon noodles were a bit too salty for me, and I'm not a fan of too much rice
After a long absence, we stopped by Ramen Kan for a revisit. Since we noticed the redesigned menu, we did wondered if the management or chef was also changed?
This post contains mostly photos.
I finished the whole thing and spooned up all of the broth. Also perhaps a little oily, but very nice.
No matter what time we arrive at Ramen they always seem to be busy but we have never had a long wait for a table. The staff seem to have a nac of squeezing people in. Also the food and service is quick so the table turnover is quite fast. On this occasion we are having a quick bite to eat with friends prior to the State of Origin Game in Sydney. I am a l

We step into the discreet doorway with the blase confidence of a local now and ascend the lift to the first floor. We're here for lunch today and, as usual, the place is full of noodle-slurping patrons.
When we entered the restaurant we waited a couple of minutes and were then seated. We perused their extensive menu, almost got sidetracked by some don, but found our way back to the ramen and ordered a bowl each. The portions were huge and they were so wa

Ramen Kan is a little Japanese restaurant tucked away upstairs, accessed by a dodgy looking lift on Hay Street next to Cold Rock. Yes, the lift is a bit dirty-looking and extremely slow and probably needs replacing but don't be put off! Once those lift doors open you will be rewarded with a dining area complete with decorative touches like bamboo and pebbles, and of course fantastic Japanese food.
A nice change. Food in Sydney is quite expensive and after doing all the tourist stuff, we realized that it was quite difficult to find a good meal for under $20.00..., unless you are having either burgers and chips or fish and chips. After being there for about a week my daughters and I accidentally discovered this place. (diagonally across of the Paddy's Market entrance) We were uncertain about eating there, but upon checking it out, we saw some patrons enjoying their meals and decided to give it a try. We were glad we did! We had the unagi bowl, chicken karaage ramen and the tonkotsu ramen. All were simply delicious, It was a welcomed change from the burgers and chips that we had subsisted on for the past five days.

Best Tan-Tan Ramen!!. Sometimes I get cravings for very specific food and Tan-Tan Ramen is one of them. The first time I had Ta-Tan Ramen was in New York. So tasty I practically forced the customer next to me to try some. (Food makes me do unusual things..) In Australia I kept searching for a Tan-Tan Ramen that was as good, but they were always watery. And then I found this dingy elevator up to Ramen-Kan...and found their Tan-Tan-Ramen! I find it hard to choose anything else, although the ramen with pork and shredded shallots is light but satisfying. During peak hours it is hard to get a good seat, but the food is worth it. It's perfect when it's quiet though and I can have a bowl of Tan-Tan, and read a good book in a nice room. It's also great to come with a partner and share lots of entrees and your mains! Nom nom.
My favourite ramen house. Good service and good prices. Recommended.
LIKE. Great cheap place to have good Japanese food. Nothing fancy!
Katsu curry rice is a fav!
Perfect. The perfect bowl of ramen to me. Difficult to find this place though
Its a Japanese buffet, and depending on which packages u chose it will exclude certain things. We went with the premium because u don't do this often.
Overall the food was good and staff was really friendly.
Our packages gave use the option for sashimi and wagyu cuts. The wagyu isn't the top of the range, which is expected since its not overly expensive.
One thing I found different here was you can order ramen as well.
You have 90 mins in total to eat and last order is 20 mins. Ull have to take into account of cooking time and time required to order and arrive at the table. In saying that we found 45 mins into the dinner we were getting pretty full and had to slow down.
Drinks are not included in the price.
The staff are warm and friendly! Came here for ramen but would love to return for the buffet in the future.
Hidden upstairs in Chinatown is an all you can eat Japanese BBQ. Monday to Thursday it costs 48.80 (not sure if this is for a limited time) otherwise costs 58.80 for the standard option. There are 2 other higher levels. We ate our fill. Service was quite fast. Good amount of different side dishes including agedashi tofu, takoyaki, kimchi, radish kimchi, beansprouts, seaweed salad. A downside is you can only pick one dessert (ice cream - vanilla/matcha/black sesame or apple jelly). Good value.
We have been twice. First time was promo menu (mon-thu) @ $39.80 and second time we took some friends along and upgraded to the premium menu $69.80. Excellent wagyu quality and we loved the sashimi too! Well worth the upgrade!
Apart from that, their gyozas and karrage were what we kept ordering!
Free beer/drink if paying w cash (premium menu)!
To be fair the promo menu was also value to money, good pork belly and beef skirt!
Arisa and another lady in glasses were always checking on us and carried wide smiles! Our toddler (who obviously ate for free) but has an allergy actually got their chef coming out to speak with us. How’s that for service?!
We love them! Small place, cosy and feels like Japan!
Can’t wait to go again <3
A JBBQ joint tucked away upstairs in chinatown (the old ramenkan). The buffet has a great selection of food on offer (including sashimi and seafood) and the staff are quick and friendly. The quality of the meat is okay and portions are small however for the variety and price you pay I think it's warranted and you can always order more. A good place to go with a group so that you can share all the dishes. Good selection of japanese drinks as well!
