Review Tre Viet Restaurant - Sydney

First time here and we really like it. Staff where very accommodating and we enjoyed our meal. We ordered vegetarian spring roll and straight away you can feel the difference, they were crispy and delicious. We also had, barramundi and grilled beef and the presentation is awesome. We will be back for sure.

Enjoyable Vietnamese dinner. Good selection of traditional dishes available and quick, friendly service. Beef noodle soup was generous and tasty. Our favourite dishes were the vegetarian papaya salad and tofu and veggie curry. The whole family liked the food.

Crispy vegetarian Spring rolls on top of soft rice noodles, with pickled carrots, crunchy cucumber, bean sprouts and crushed peanuts, add a sweet nuoc nam. It’s tasty and filling. The egg crepe with fried tofu and barbecued cauliflower florets is a treat. Just add a pot of dark green tea and you’re set. Try a Vietnamese beer with this.

Ok last minute viet food. Very meaty flavour of pho instead of herbal. Tomato rice was microwave heated (burning bowl). $24 for 10 pieces of grill pork but without the crispy skin (sad). Menu looked more like Thai food than viet. Overall, its flavour was ok. But go somewhere else if there’s other options.

Unfortunately, Tre Viet was a bit of a disaster. I ordered egg noodle soup with Crispy chicken. I had ordered the chicken a few weeks ago and it was quite nice. Tonight if was very average with not the great flavour it had on our last visit. The biggest problem was the soup which was extremely bland and well under seasoned. The worst part however was the noodles which reminded me of two minute noodles as they were nothing like egg noodles at all. The service however was friendly but I did overhear group at the other table that they weren't very impressed either with the food. This is disappointing as my brother said this place was really good. Perhaps the chef was ill and someone who can't cook filled in.

Very good vegetarian cake with side and all the choices are good.. I will come back. Thank you..

Awesome place! Good food and decently large serving size. The service was great and staff were friendly. Will be back!

Although the food was nice, it took forever for someone to take out order as well as for the food to arrive. The place needs a coat of paint as the walls are splattered with meals of yesteryear. There was a decent sized piece of plastic in my vermicelli with only a small apology and no offer to discount or refund.

The vermicelli salad with chicken was SO good and fresh we loved it. However, the fish has a really strange fishy taste if that makes sense... Wouldn't recommend ordering that. Service was great

We dined here tonight. We started with the rice paper rolls. We opted for two chicken and two prawn. It came with home made sauce and the serving size was quite large. Didn't have too much flavour though. I ordered the Vermicelli Pork Salad. To say it was HUGE is an understatement. It was very tasty and i would order this again. My partner had the beef noodle soup and that was massive too. We both couldn't get through our meals which is something that rarely comes out of my mouth. The location is HUGE and would be great for large groups. It didnt seem too popular though for a sat night. I know it was raining but there were still lots of ppl in newtown. Anyways whilst the service was great i dont know if i would go back. The bill cost us 47.50 so not expensive in any way. I think its more of a place i'd menulog.

Ok-good food and friendly people but They are like in a rush, No idea if they were too friendly or they needed the table. Also no music so no atmosphere and feels pretty awkward. Can be a lot better for sure.

With so many good restaurants in Newtown we decided give this a try on Monday night. Apart from the service which was good the food was awful. At $91 for 2 people for 2 little entrees and 2 mains and i corona was a quite expensive for the tiny portions they dished up. The smoked duck was just slices of tough duck with a very sticky and sweet tasteless smoked sauce which tasted very suspiciously "commercially prepared from a bottle" The pork belly was no better, the tamarind sickly sweet sauce definitely did not suit this dish. With so many great Viet restaurants in Sydney this place is neither authentic, nor good value, never coming here again !!

The staff were friendly but despite being air conditioned, the restaurant was hot inside.
Orders were taken promptly but the waiter did not take a drinks order without being prompted.
We ordered pancakes for an entree- they were bland and utterly tasteless.
For mains we ordered barramundi and the pork belly in orange sauce. Both were tasteless and the pork was such a disappointment we didn't finish it. The prawns in both the pancakes and the fried rice came from a tin.
Considering this is Newtown and there is so much competition, I had expected a lot more.
Everything about this Vietnamese restaurant was great. Service was attentive and efficient.

The restaurant is small enough to feel intimate but big enough to have sufficient spacing. It was also very quiet when we went.

The rice paper rolls were fresh and the peanut sauce was tasty. The betel leaf was cute and an easy dish to eat. The little betel leaf parcels were yum. And the pork vermicelli was, again, fresh and light.

Very underwhelming. Had the pho - beef and beef balls, as they don't have a Pho Dac Biet (combination) option. Not the worst I had, but leaves a lot to be desired. Broth was quite bland.

We've been there a few times for lunch. I love Vietnamese food so I am easily satisfied with sweet, spicy and sour, tasty food with a bit of ginger and garlic flavour! It's recommended for a quick and tasty Vietnamese lunch. The selection of menu is pretty much the same as usual Vietnamese places so if you want to have traditional or interesting, unique Vietnamese food, then I will go somewhere else.

This was the first time I've been to this place and definitely my last. I ordered a crispy chicken with noodle soup, but the noodle turned out to be only half cooked. When I told the cashier/waiter that the noodle was half cooked, he insisted on saying that the egg noodles were supposed to taste like this.

Anyone would be able to tell when something was uncooked, especially when the texture of the noodles were hard. So I got the waiter to re-boil the noodles for me. But his attitude was more like alright-I'll-re-boil-this-for-you. This time the noodles turned out to be properly boiled, soft like it should. The actual crispy chicken on a separate dish turned out to be pretty good, and my friends' beef noodle soup was fine as well. But when I got home late in the evening my stomach didn't feel very well. If the dish was fine then I wouldn't be complaining but referring. So I really wouldn't recommend this place to any of my friends/family.

Taste good. Soup is the best. Crispy skin chicken is really delicious. Service is excellent. Sauce is also tasty. Many different dishes to choose.

My first visit and above average pho for $12, which did not appear to have MSG. This is the only thing I have tried from here.
Will return if in the area.
I_like_pickles
Mmmmmmmm pho.
It was delicious. The broth was on point and full of flavour. I highly recommend the pho. Actually it's the only thing I can recommend because it was the only thing I had from here.

This Vietnamese restaurant located at the Sydney University end of King Street is deceptively large. Upon entering, the long elongated restaurant extends into a back room where a blue lit aquarium provides a visual centrepiece. Highly recommended is the beef salad; pieces of tender marinated beef pieces sit atop crunchy sprouts, lettuce, cucumber, red onion, beautifully brought together with a well balanced dressing.

***edited 01JUL18***

Another visit for a quick dinner unfortunately resulted in a less than satisfactory meal for us. We ordered the Beef Rice Noodle Soup which was decent enough. The Smoked Duck In Tamarind Sauce on the other hand was not. We could smell an over cooked ‘burnt smell’ to the dish. Ate a few pieces and noticed it was beyond a charred flavour. We questioned this with the waiter who smelt the dish and asked if we wanted it replaced. We kindly asked him to do so but another lady who was the manager came back with our dish and advised it was meant to smell and taste like this due to the ‘smoked flavour’. We’ve had smoked duck before and it was juicy and succulent unlike this over cooked and dry duck dish we had. All we were offered was an additional 10% off the whole bill instead of a replacement dish. She even admitted that she hadn’t tried the dish so wonder why she was so adamant it was meant to taste burnt? We basically left the dish untouched. Anyhow sure the other dishes are better but just don’t order this ‘smoked duck’. At least the rice was edible too.

Oh Wow !! Its THE BEST !! soooo fresh and tasy and the staff bend over backwards to make sure you are satisfied !!!! The Stuffed Chicken Wings and the Spicey Calamari are the best ive found ! And for desert the fried icecream was a winner for me 👍🏻You have to book because its always busy .

An excellent place to go when craving more upmarket Vietnamese food. Cosy decor, and friendly staff. The proprietor, I believe, is always cheerful and makes us laugh when he's around. The rice paper rolls are sturdy and refined with an excellent sauce mixture, and the Nem Tre Viet pieces are full of taste and satisfyingly crunchy. The Nem Tre Viet vermicelli salad is a personal favourite. Unlike many similar places, they accept card payment with no surcharge or minimum - why can't the rest of Sydney catch up in this respect!

Beef rice noodle soup $12.50
Vermicelli salad with charcoal grilled pork $12.50
Vietnamese pancake $14.50

Whatsayme?
Order: the beef rice noodle soup with beef balls! Soup and beef is 👍🏻😍 also have the vermicelli salad if you want something lighter
Do not order: the spring rolls- portions were really small I didn't even bother with a photo

Yum!
We had a variety of dishes but couldn't go passed the sizzling beef 'roll your own'. So much fun assembling your own rice paper rolls! Plus, having the chef cook your food in front of you was great entertainment!
Everybody was so friendly.
Being BYO is also a bonus.
Price was reasonable - decent servings too.
Everything was fresh and healthy 👌

The first time I tried this place, I ordered takeaway stir fry tofu and veggies which was a bit underwhelming and too expensive for what it was ($15 for what was mostly bok choy).

I went back for dinner with family the next night and this time, the experience was much better! We ordered the roll-your-own fresh spring roll set, papaya salad, and pork chop with tomato rice. All choices were fantastic, with the self-serve spring roll set being the standout. All the food had great flavours, portion was reasonable and the price was not too bad.

We also had a few of the dessert drinks to go with the food, and overall it was such a great family dinner out.

Arrived with a few friends to have dinner on Wednesday night. We ordered various entrees which arrived promptly and were good. The main courses arrived also promptly - accompanied by a very rude waiter. This middle aged gent has obviously been in hospitality too long. The main courses were just ok. Not surprisingly we left no tip!

I quite enjoyed Tre Viet. The service was prompt and friendly. I had a Bun Bo Xao, and although it was not the best one I have had, I still enjoyed my meal.

I went here Saturday night and tried the seafood pho, betel leaves with pork mince and the fresh spring rolls. The spring rolls were nice, needed a little more flavour but still good and fresh. The pho was warming and yummy with 2 prawns, 3 crab balls, some noodles, tomato and greens. The meal won't blow your mind or be memorable but it is friendly service, tasty food, good prices and a clean restaurant so I would def recommend if you are in the area and want Vietnamese food.
The Weekend Foodie
Anything warm and soupy is ideal for a cold winter night, after tossing up between mexican and vietnamese, we decided to head into The Viet.. esepcially since we consumed a large stick of rocky road and two packets of chips during Avenue Q. The store was relatively busy, there are so many restaurants in Newtown, competition is fierce. We saw a middle aged woman hard selling their food outside her takeaway store and another lot restaurant owners sat in their empty restaurant giving us puppy eyes as we walked past.
Meg Neyland
For an entree we chose spring rolls which were delicious. However, the experience only went downhill from there. Our meals arrived at completely different times which meant that mine was getting cold by the time that my partners arrived. My meal lacked flavour or spice and was disappointing. Despite ordering rice we had to remind the waiter when it did not arrive with the second meal.

Enjoy the vermicilli salad with mixed BBQ meat. Fresh and huge serving for $14.50, just needs more sauce. Service is efficient and friendly, venue is mid-range decor, not super fancy but nice enough for a casual evening out. BYO drinks.

One of the more popular establishments on King Street is Tre Viet, a restaurant that claims to specialise in pho and traditional Vietnamese dishes. Pho is a popular street food dish in Vietnam – cheap and very satisfying – and it’s probably the most well known Vietnamese dish alongside rice paper rolls. It’s one of my favourite noodle dishes, since it’s a light and seemingly simple dish but still has wonderful complex flavours in the beautiful broth. When we got to Tre Viet two things struck me. The empty restaurant was being warmed by the gentle strains of a Viennese waltz and they had an aquarium. These were both firsts for the quest and fitting additions to our first lunchtime outing. We have opted for lunch so that the Melbourne-based members of the family can join us. Specifically so that the Heathen-Outlaw can make it. We have also performed a bit of jiggery-pokery with the running order so as not to inflict New Taste or Mad Mex on the out-of-towners. The family are in town because we have just celebrated the 90th birthday of the G-rent-mother, which was very pleasant. So we have squeezed a questing into the packed program, between a morning’s outing to the Sydney Park playground and a mid-afternoon dash to the airport. Due to a lack of seats in our motor, Stropette and I volunteer to take advantage of the crystal clear day to walk to the restaurant pushing the sleeping Pancetta and her stroller in front of us. One particular day the family and I landed in Tre Viet. It was almost packed except for a table at the back of the restaurant. Later I realised there was a Spreets voucher floating around, so that could be the reason. Luckily for us, a table at the front of the restaurant (with better lighting) was freed up and we moved there.

Located in the busy area of King Street in Newtown, Tre Viet offers clean and mostly healthy Vietnamese dishes in a modern and bright environment.

Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and a buzzy, always-busy dining room set the scene for a great dinner.

I had the sea food pho and it was too salty and dissapointing. Not sure i'll be dining there again.

Delicious roll your own rice paper rolls and chicken rice noodle soup. Disappointed wih grilled prawns. Small prawns n not worth the $22 price tag. Everything else was delicious and fresh and service was ok. Will be returning.

Great food reasonable price. Whilst outside reading the menu in the window a local hipster bustled past and into the restaurant and said "get in there its red hot" he was not wrong. Great rice paper rolls, tofu and vegetables superb and the star of the evening was the green papaya salad. A few drinks and change from $80 for 2 people. Throw in decent service and it's a winner.

Worst Vietnamese in Newtown. I don't know what everyone is talking about.
It's expensive, lacking in flavour, mean sized portions (and not in a good way) and the restaurant had no vibe whatsoever. The service was okay, dirty dishes stayed on the table too long, considering how many empty handed waiters walked past. They also didn't bother asking how the meal was and it wasn't as if I made it obvious that I felt completely robbed of stomach space for nothing.

I had fresh spring rolls (rice paper rolls) they had absolutely no flavour, the best part was the peanut sauce which isn't really hard to get right, most Vietnamese restaurants make it the same way.

I tried the minced chicken wings, they were okay - not as good as doytao thai's in my opinion - infact not even on par with Doytao's.

Finally - I tried the noodles with crispy skinned chicken, the chicken was great, the rest was like eating a packet of migoreng with a mean amount of boiled veggies (having little to no flavour might I also mention) and the meanest amount of coriander ive ever seen in my life.

It came to $40, complete rip off if you would've witnessed the quality, portion size and disappointment on my face.

Perhaps I'm a food snob, (I don't think so at all), the bald viet in Balmain still absolutely smashes this restaurant to pieces and would easily beat the price by a good $5-$10, but at least I can park.

Beautiful Fresh Vietnamese. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this gem by accident and now come here regularly for our Vietnamese fix. Friendly staff, fresh food, amazing peanut sauce!! (with the fresh spring rolls), well priced, nice atmosphere. Book ahead if you plan on going Fri/Sat nights as you might have to wait otherwise. We now bring friends and family along and everyone loves it.

Too expensive but low qulity.. Very disappointed with d food n service. I came in on a Saturday afternoon, I had to wait for 5mins to acknowledge me n still didnt get any. I had ti say HELLO twicen still no one to attend to me, yet d restaurant was empty. I had d impression dat My business wasnt wanted there. d food was expensive, $22 for half a barramundi (around 300gms) n deep fried. it was too salty. d papaya salad was also bland n same as d pho.
all in all I will give it 4out of 10, 10being excellent. Will not recommend n wipl never cone back to dis place.

Food really sucked. barely ate two mouthfuls and was very disgruntled but went to pay any way (which i shouldnt have in hindsight) and then the waiter got all offended when i didnt tip! as if.

Hmmm..... I walk past this place and sometimes it looks full, sometimes a little empty.
Finally came to try it out and it was bad, a little pricey when i compare it to eating in Cabramatta or Bankstown but that maybe a little unfair. We ordered the make your own rice paper rolls, out of all they ive tried, they brought out the least amount. IT though, was still enough to fill us up. But the freshness was not there
Might come back to try something else in future but wont be in a rush either

This is the best Vietnamese food I have ever eaten without a doubt. Go here and pleasure your taste buds.

Consistent. Tre Viet is our go-to place when the husband doesn't feel like risking something new. The staff are always friendly and attentive towards us because we go there so often. Top dishes would be the Pho (beef, crispy skin - extremely generous) Nam and the Vietnamese Pancake. I've also recently discovered the Salt and Pepper Tofu. Yum! We book ahead as seats in Tre Viet tend to fill quickly.

Great value, healthy high quality food and friendly staff.

As long as this venue continues to receive and use raw chicken left on the street then you are flirting with death.

Avoid at all costs.
Alison
Arguably the best Vietnamese food in the district. Order the roll your own rice paper rolls. Service a bit slow but still acceptable

It is worth going just to enjoy the aquarium. I love Vietnamese food - maybe EVEN better than Japanese food - which is a big statement from me.
The food here is pretty tasty, with lots of variety and 333 beer. The betel leaf entrees were fab, as was the caramelised pork hot pot, other shared things were delicious too.
The crazy colourful Che (sp??) drink and the VN coffee were a treat to end our meal.
For diversionary therapy, you can't go past the colourful and lively tropical aquarium/
Find out more at http://paintingthebridge.com/2013/07/13/154-tre-viet-the-classy-aquarium-vibe/

Over priced. Ordered chilli n salt squid, and stir fried chicken satay, too salty, and no satay taste (more like oyster sauce). Dishes look like China-town kind.
Jo
Fresh and tasty food. We had the fresh spring rolls/noodle salad also some pork, and the chilli/salt tofu. All were delicious and two girls left happy and full. It was very busy by 8pm on a Friday night so I'd recommend booking. Entertainment book voucher made it even better value.

Very Expensive. This place is average. I don't mind the beef pho, which have generous servings but it's VERY EXPENSIVE. I found the rice paper rolls unpleasant, and all of the food is too expensive and overpriced.
JanieYou
Love. Never disappoints me. The food is fresh and yummy! I keep coming back even though there are closer Viet places around me. Try their grilled beef, so so good or Nem Tre Viet either as entree or part of vermicelli salad, nom.
Jenna Burlace
Great food. This is my regular lunch place. I nearly always get the chicken vermicelli salad, it's delicious. Big portions, I usually can't quite finish mine. Service us polite and speedy. Sometimes the guy guesses what I want to order but he always says vegetarian spring rolls, so he's wrong. But I like that.
The Basic Reviewer
Mmmm Delicious. This is one of our favourite local restaurants. The food is delicious, and well priced, and we always receive good service. Yum. Great vegetarian menu. boyfriend orders the beef cubes every time because he's so obsessed with it, i think the vegetarian vietnamese pancakes are yummy in my tummy. Perhaps the people who have thought the service here was bad were just wankers and that's why they were rude to you.
Paul S
Delicious Pho made with fresh ingredients. I had the beef pho with beef balls and it hit the spot! Wait staff were friendly and attentive. We will most definitely be back!
Sincat05
Sub-standard food. And the crappiest waiter ever... Don't bother going.
Paquita Wiesner
Loved the spring rolls, like small cigar size, thin wrapping and really tasty. Fresh prawn and pork rolls delicious. Lovely papaya salad. Beef with lemongrass and chilli quite tasty but not enough beef, too much (almost raw) onion and could have bumped up chilli as couldnt taste it at all. Busy and good vibe.
Marrickvilleme
Too expensive for average Viet. This restaurant is nothing special. Typical Vietnamese food, servings that tend to be small rather than generous and wait staff that seem unable to smile. There is nothing terrible about the food but also nothing that elevates it above any other Vietnamese on King Street except the prices. It's always been quite expensive and they have just raised the prices on the entire menu by around 15% per item! I'll be going elsewhere next time.
Crooked Nose
It's ok - but check your bill.. The food was reasonable, the staff was great except for the host. Who somehow 'accidentally' overcharged us for two bowls of pho. I didn't realise until I got outside and made a quick menatl calculation. I wnet back in and he immediately gave me the correct change without question. Very suspect.
We won't be back.
Orange_tree
Salty pho.... Both the chicken pho and beef pho were disappointing. Stringy bits of meat and large amounts of noodles swimming in a salty, yet otherwise tasteless bowl of soup. While I normally slurp all pho dry, I couldn't even make it halfway with this one.
Tre Viet may offer a "restaurant" feel but really, I'd prefer to head down to Pho 236 for better food.
Purple Bear
Your typical vietnamese food. I had the rice paper rolls which was fresh and the sauce was full flavoured. The healthy drink was sweet and tasted authentic but perhaps a bit low on the logans. Price was a bit overpriced for typical viet food but its in a pleasant environment and efficient staff.
Madam Wu
The usual suspects. Tre Viet is set on busy King Street where you get to watch colourful characters passing by if you score a window seat. The menu contained all the usual standards including pho, bun, fresh rolls, stir fries and S&P squid. The bun or vermicelli salad is served with a choice of options and I tried the char-grilled beef and my friend had the vege spring roll option, both of which were delicious. The salad itself was standard and came with shredded iceberg lettuce, bean sprouts, cucumber and pickled carrots and turnips. Cheap and cheerful fare for a casual get together.
Heneedsfood
Tre Viet. Not the absolute best Vietnamese you'll get your mouth around but definitely not the worst. The Crispy chicken is a little average and the Charcoal bbq pork lacks some seasoning. The front room gets pretty rowdy and overheated and the service is very pleasant. Not sure that I'd rush back
