Review Steki Taverna - Sydney

B P
We visited Steki on a Tuesday night and had the pleasure of Jimmy looking after us. Greek food is our favourite and we had high expectations. Steki didn't disappoint. Lamb, octopus, taramasalata and Greek salad were the best we've had. Awesome food and place. We both loved it.

Really enjoyed our meal here. Nice to step away slightly from the main drag and enter this unpretentious and attractive restaurant. Great, friendly service and our meal arrived quickly. The roast lamb was a standout and all the dishes were enjoyable. Greek food has a reputation for heaviness but not here and the prices were very reasonable. Definitely coming back.

Absolute waste, the food is a embarasment to Greeks, table service is no good.. no room to eat and tables up against a wall.. had to turn my light on my phone so I could see the menu as there's basically no lighting, and then to be called names by the singer because we weren't a good enough crowd .

My family and I, which were 5 of us attended the restaurant on the 27th of February. The place was absolutely full. There was barely any elbow room and the tables were basically all connected to each other as there was no space to separate the tables. There was no QR code to sign in. Although The food was very tasty and the live music created a very homely atmosphere of Greece, all 5 of us tested positive for Covid after getting the symptoms Over 3 days. Please be aware that for people such as myself who is 25 weeks pregnant with a toddler, it is extremely inconvenient and dangerous if restaurants can’t take the precautions and follow Covid restrictions such as having an entry limit and basic ventilation. It is important for everyone that was there that night if they haven’t already gotten tested to do so and to self isolate.

Not bad food. Great atmosphere, fun place. Love the love the live music. Will be back for sure Thanks

Still the best Greek restaurant for food & music after 30 years. Can't wait to go back on a Saturday night for a dance

Amazing close knit atmosphere. Fun and lively bouzouki and live Greek music. Wonderful and authentic Greek food and dishes. Many memorable nights out. Best enjoyed in a group. Parking is difficult to find. You need to walk a fair bit and find street parking, or park far and walk.

Amazing food and hospitality. Great music definitely go again. The Host Paul and his team go out of there way to make sure you have a gr8 night.

Been here a few times. Never left disappointed!

Service is professional and friendly. Decor is true blue Greek taverna! Love it!

I would highly recommend the grilled octopus and the lamb! Oh the lamb was so amazing!

After you pay, Greek style baklava is on the house! What a sweet deal!

My baked lamb was some of the tenderest, most flavoursome lamb that I've ever had and the spanakopites had a great rich filling. It's definitely worth it for a special Greek feast even if the prices seem fairly high - although a bit all over the place, with meat seeming worse value than Yiamas in St Peters but other dishes being cheaper.

The staff are friendly, funny and took very good care of our large group. They were always around if we needed more booze or water. Answered questions and made changes to dishes if there were allergies etc.

The food itself were cheap and generously sized. Half of us did the set buffet which gave us a very good range of the food on offer and at an amazing price.

If you like good lamb that just falls off the bone then this is the place to eat

Delicious, unpretentious greek food in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. Loooved the lamb and the bifteki! Potatoes that came with both dishes were also delicious. Bread, both pita and the baguettes, were warm and fresh! Will be back for more good food 👌🏻

Really fun vibe - super loud and lively! Live music people dancing. The food was good value and just what u would expect. Service is not great. Waitress wouldn't divide our
Bill so we had to get our phones out and do it ourselves which was just odd. Heaps of leering older men in there so watch out for that.

We'd just arrived in Sydney late one Wednesday evening and decided to head out for some dinner. We walked into this place to see an empty restaurant, and given that Newtown is always busy we were a bit hesitant but decided to give it a go. We decided to go with the banquet and I am so glad we did. This place is amazing. My boyfriend and I both think the banquet we enjoyed here is one of the top ten meals we've ever eaten, it was absolutely fantastic and the food kept coming, my only disappointment was that I couldn't fit desert in. Even the bread was made fresh and absolutely perfect. The owner was lovely and the service was good. We came back on the Saturday to eat it again before we left but the place was packed and unfortunately we couldn't get a table. If you want good Greek food, this is the place to go.

The food was by no means bad and while we enjoyed our souvlaki and fish, the value was fairly poor. Moreover, the opening hours at Steki are somewhat inconvenient. However, more importantly for us, the cost of the food was a little dear, the service was hit and miss and the place was dingy and dimly lit.

Live music is fun but can be somewhat noisy, detracting from the ambience of dining at Steki.

All in all, we are happy to have finally tried this restaurant but aren't in any rush to return.

I really enjoyed the time I went to Steki. We went late at night and loved the vibe, music and kicking back with some great food and drinks.

Turn the music down!!. Vibe was fine but when you cannot speak to the person next to you, it does not make for a fun night. Music way too loud, food ok, first and last tine unfortunately as I'd heard good things. Market it as a nightclub, not a restaurant!!!

Service was efficient and friendly. We were granted a few minutes to decide between the mouth-watering dishes. A 1/2 litre carafe of house red wine arrived in camping-style jugs. Not very fancy but anything about the place is, anyway. We didn’t expect the wine to be great, and it wasn’t. A bit too dry for some, a bit too flat for me. But drinkable.

Steki Taverna staff were boisterous, joking around with us, like they were serving family. Couple of the dishes didn't quite hit home -- the spinach salad needed lemon squeezed over it to save it from oblivion, garlic dips didn't have much bite -- but there were other things on the menu which I'd go back to try. Lots of lamb dishes. And Greeks are known for their lamb, right? Overall impression: food was good.
Staff are lovely. Fun atmosphere and good roast lamb.

Absolutely terrible chicken souvlaki for the astonishingly expensive price of $26. It was over-cooked and dry and came with a woeful salad and tasteless tzatziki. The service was good but it's simply not enough to redeem the awful food. Will never be back.

Went with my partner and two friends. We had a ball - From the friendly and attentive staff, the cozy taverna like atmosphere with pictures, bouzouki and Traditional woolen rug. We ordered the following as part of Banquet for $45.00. and all were good: Beetroot salad, Taramosalata, Pickled Octopus, Village salad, Grilled Haloumi Cheese, Zucchini Fritters, Spinach Triangle pastries. The
Tzatziki was good but lacked any Garlicky taste. Also The Calamari was not good - Very thick oily battered...The Meatballs were okay but a bit unnecessary and Sugary...The Roast Lamb was to die for and abosolutely tender and full of flavour; loved the lemony potatoes it came with. Bougatsa for dessert was excellent, and the baklava was decent but not amazing. Overall had a good experience and would recommend this place - Extra points for the freshly baked bread. Yum!!!!! And the live music.

$40 group banquet appalling value. Yet another restaurant that finds it appropriate to force groups to get the banquet then skimps on the servings. a third of the listed dishes were simply the components of the dips and entrees plate. very misleading, very expensive for what you got.
in addition we were crammed elbow to elbow with the entertainment (mostly backing tracks) blaring in our faces. a truely bad experience

Great food, even better service and atmosphere. Went for dinner with friends on a Saturday night. We booked ahead, which seemed necessary - the place was packed full. We ordered the $45 banquet menu, along with some wine and Greek beers, which left us all feeling somewhere between satisfied and stuffed full. The portions were definitely generous! The food was excellent. I enjoyed everything, there was good variety, and the slow cooked lamb was out of this world! A live band started playing around 8.30, playing traditional Greek folk music - many of the tables started clapping and singing along. The waiter managed to convince us to get up for a dance before paying our bill, and we were given a complimentary dessert platter for our (woeful) efforts.

I had a great night, I would definitely recommend it!

Woefully inadequate.. We were all excited to try 'authentic' Greek food for a reasonable price (as reviews on Urbanspoon had led us to believe), only to be sorely disappointed.

1. The food was way overpriced. Over $50 each for 3 people, without any dessert, or drinks. That is not reasonable, particularly because...

2. The food was manure. Bad enough to actually be insulting. I ordered a stuffed chicken breast, because how can you go wrong with chicken? They managed. It was barely average. The potatoes that came with it were atrocious. They were soaked all the way through with lemon juice, which made me pull a sour-face every time I ate one. The portions were generous, but who wants MORE bad food on their plate?

3. A friend had the moussaka which I tried: He thought it was average, I thought it was terrible.

4. The service was bad. The waitresses were pushy ("order this, order that!" - NO, thankyou!), and the mains took ages to arrive.

The only thing I enjoyed was the starter; pita bread.

But it's not worth shelling out $50, sober and dessertless, for pita bread. Overall; never again.

Meh. Nice and cozy atmosphere, but won't be returning. The food was overpriced and lacked that wonderful Greek freshness. The chicken kebabs were dry and overly blackened by the grill. The service was attentive.

Just got home from Steki - the food was spectacular and the portions more than substantial - my favourite being the moussaka and the baklava. Wonderful entertainment and friendly service topped off a great night. Thanks guys- well done!

A While Between and Still Mediocre. It had been a few years since I'd been to Steki. Friends of mine booked a table, I was a little reluctant as I remembered the food being mediocre to terrible, especially the moussaka.
My doubts were realised yet again.
Terrible food. I think people just go there on Sunday nights just to be seen and socialise. It's definitely not about the food. if you want better Greek food, go elsewhere, as far away from Newtown as you can.
Davina
The moussaka is amazing and I am a big fan of the lemony potatoes. I love the homely atmosphere which feels like you're in someone's living room and the live music is great and unobtrusive.

Food was just ok.. Not enough for what you pay but the atmosphere & entertainment was great.

OPA. Great place - great food, plently of drinks and dancing what more could you want
The Greek And The Welshman
Great atmosphere, if you are Greek and have and understanding of Greek food and taste, STEKI may not be your first choice.
