Review Gou Sushi - Sydney

Very good cuisine. Food was very fresh. Quality for value is great! We had the agedashi tofu, vegetable roll, prawn tempura roll, chicken katsu roll and the gobo chips. Would recommend

So I have read a lot of good reviews about this restaurant so I wanted to try. The food was good but average, nothing special. I was expecting much more. The price was a little overpriced and no more sushi train( as I saw sushi train in the pictures). Anyway it was good but I wouldn't come back.

Went for the first time having heard so much for such a long time - it’s hard to catch them on any given day as they only do lunch on certain days and omakase on certain nights. Walked in with no booking - wasn’t too busy. Sat down and ordered pretty quick but it was a long wait for food - probably about 30 mins. This was the only downside. Several people asked to have their orders changed to takeaway because of the wait. Had the lunchtime sushi set - 8 pieces with a side dish. Ordered a piece of toro and a miso soup on the side. When food did eventually arrive, sushi was fantastic. Chuwanmushj was hot and silken as you’d like. Toro quality was high but the cut was a little chewy. All up a surprisingly good feed.

The food here is really good, it’s less busy than another local Japanese place I won’t name, but it’s so much better. Good sushi, good curry udon, good small dishes like crispy salmon skin and takoyaki. Service is nice too.

(4.5 stars) Joining the ranks of Sydney’s Japanese omakase specialists, Gou Sushi Sydney, is offering a $108/person menu Thursday to Saturday nights. With just fourteen people seated counter style around the chef, this sushi-focussed offering gives you the opportunity to watch how each item is made and ask questions, so would be good for first time omakase diners. Owner/chef Rio Chun Man Lau has worked under the famous Toshihiko Oe at Masuya Japanese Restaurant. He’s taken from his mentor a strong appreciation for fresh, well-cut fishes elegantly draped over properly made sushi rice. His point of difference is applying a wide array of garnishes, like delicately handled soy and yuzu koshu with a spike of wasabi with the garfish, and mint (rather than shiso) and a dab of plum sauce with the beautifully cut cuttlefish. The mainly nigiri sushi menu begins with fanned out slivers of baby abalone dragged though a condiment made from mushrooms and their own livers and mushrooms. There’s a lollipop of yellowfin tuna surrounded by daikon radish, and blue-eye cod with shiro miso and kombu (dried kelp) kissed by the blowtorch. While Rio prepares the next fishes, we tuck into spanner crab chawanmushi. It suits the gentle, well-balanced Ura-Kasumi sake ($62/720ml) from the restaurant’s short list. You are also able to BYO wine ($8/bottle), with our Chardonnay suiting some of the kitchen’s punctuating dishes like eel steamed in banana leaf and saikyo miso black cod. Alfonsino with yuzu and miso is lovely and all about the flavour of the fish; ark shell marinated in dashi stock is very tender. Kombu-marinated whiting is about texture, with the firm fish tasting faintly of seaweed. While I won’t give away all of this 19-item strong menu, look out for silky eggplant cooked in soy and sake then flamed with yuzu miso. The other stars are creamy Paradise prawns topped with prawn head jelly, garlic butter, Cheddar cheese and mayonnaise; and a crisp lollipop of deep-fried rice topped with spicy tuna tartare. Plenty of bang for your buck here, and you definitely won’t leave hungry.

Highly recommend the Omakase here. Great attention to detail and great down to earth style omakase, which is rare in Sydney.

Food was really good. Traditional Japanese sushi vs fusion sushi, very well mixed. Chef was very friendly. Will revisit again for sure.

Had omakase here, it’s cheap compare to the others but not really worth it, better spend more and get the real deal. It’s just a regular sushi stop.

Stopped by Gou in passing for a quick lunch and it did not disappoint! Quick and friendly service from staff. Ordered the agadeshi tofu which was delicious and silky, the aburi salmon roll which was super tasty and a very generous serving and karaage chicken which was so juicy and even had seasoning on the side of mayo which only elevated the flavours... was so excited to eat it all I didn’t manage to take images of each dish but definitely will be back

I’ve always loved Japanese cuisine. When I arrived at Gou I asked the waitress what she’d recommend and I have to say I was completely content with her selections! We started with the Agedashi Tofu which was silky and soft, a chefs choice of six different combinations of sushi to try and a traditional daifuku for dessert.
I adored the daifuku! Japanese desserts aren’t as sweet but the red bean paste has a beautiful flavour and with the strawberry absolutely gorgeous.
A chefs tasting plate was definitely the way to go, if your indecisive or even just curious and want to try new combinations this is perfect for you! There are things I never would’ve considered and ended up actually loving like eel!
Conveniently located near central station, and with such polite staff I will definitely be visiting Gou when I’m in the central area.

Cute little sushi train restaurant. Friendly staff. You can get take away. Not much when I came in but they said they can make to order. 3 plates takeaway = $9.60

Japanese food is all about quality, there is a strong sense of preciseness and deliberateness to all aspects of it. Gou Sushi is the perfect example of that, it is beyond just an average Sushi Train restaurant, everything is heightened to a further level. From the selection of the freshest ingredients, the precision in the chef’s preparation (which you can watch while you eat) and the careful combination of flavours. We were greeted by the lovely

Even if I had hands I couldn’t count the number of times I’d opted for dinner at this unassuming best kept secret of Surry Hills. You could say it’s my ‘Gou To’ Sushi pick (I’m SO sorry). The interior features a large sushi train that surrounds the Jedi Master, as he churns out some of the freshest and most innovative sushi this side of Osaka.

Thursday lunch time was quiet so the sushi train didn't have the full menu on rotation but the quality was very good which was made better with a lunch time deal of $3.20 per plate. Snapper and Tuna 👌

Located just within walking distance from Central station, this Restaurant serves made-to-order Japanese cuisine on top of grab-and-enjoy plates from sushi train.
We ordered several dishes from the menu and also several sushi plates for our dinner. All are so good! Everything is fresh, made out of high quality ingredients and tasted delicious.
My favourite dishes: soft shell crab tempura, lobster tail tempura, spicy karaage, ebi tempura roll and aburi sushi plate.
Their dessert is delightful too (black sesame ice cream and cheese spring roll).
At time of writing they have lunch special ($3.20 for all sushi plates). Sounds like a good deal to me.
A good Surry Hills local for better quality sushi train. you can order from the menu and see the sushi chef make it in front of you. Watch out for their daily specials and if you see the Crystal bay prawn, order it!
Love At First Bite
Gou Sushi is a sushi train and restaurant located near Central station that serves high quality Japanese cuisine including sashimi, sushi, noodle and rice dishes. Diners can order off the menu and watch the chefs produce the dishes on the spot in front of you resulting in exquisite and varied Japanese dishes using the freshest of local ingredients. We came here for dinner on a weeknight and will share with you our experience.

A quaint and quiet place very close to Central station that was recommended to me by friends. They have a sushi train but we ordered from the menu and while some dishes did take awhile to come out (granted, we asked for 7-8 servings per dish as we had a lot of people), digging into it was awesome. Special mention to the lobster tail which was soooo good for a very reasonable price! They have a very interesting yet affordable menu which doesn't just consist of your typical sushi. Will visit again! :)

Conveniently located right near Central station, Gou Sushi is a great place for a work lunch or quick bite for dinner on the way home. With a great selection from the sushi train, and so much more you can order from the menu, this restaurant has all the great things you’d expect from a Japanese restaurant (and some you wouldn’t expect).

Gou Sushi is a conventional Japanese restaurant near Central Station which serves sushi on a conveyor belt. The interior is decorated minimally with wooden table tops and black pillars and walls. The service crew were dressed in chic and smart black uniforms too.

There is nothing exceptional food wise. The sushi were decently prepared - the vinegar rice was sticky and enticing though a higher grade, Japonica rice would be better.

There is no fresh seafood in restaurants - the unagi and prawns are more than three days old and no longer exudes natural freshness and sweetness.

In Short: Gou Sushi in Surry Hills is like hopping a bullet train directly to Tokyo from Sydney for truly top notch Japanese cuisine. Sushi master chef Aoki Rio surprises with great quality and flavours that instantly transport diners back to the streets of Japan.

For me, sushi is more than just food. It represents memories of walking Tokyo backstreets in search of a local sushi master and his four-seat shoebox restaurant, or snowy nights in Sapporo supping on that day’s insanely fresh catch, infused with the essence of the Sea of Japan. So, measuring up to authentic Japanese benchmarks can be a big ask for a Sydney sushi spot, but Gou Sushi in Surry Hills was more than up to the task.

Love this place!
Hidden away by all there construction, you can find it a few mins away from central station.
The food is great and so is the service.
We got invited by ompty media so I cant really comment on the price but whatever it is, I'm sure it will be well worth it.
Everything was fresh and sashimi was made for you on the spot and ingredients are bought each morning at the fish market so you know you're getting quality.
Definitely recommend this place to family and friends.

Good food, good customer customer service at a very affordable price. The only downside is this restaurant is seriously lacking staffs. Only 1 chef and 2 waiting staffs. It gets difficults to take order during busy hours. Crispy tuna tataki and aburi salmon scallop highly recommended! But they're all really good quality sushi!
Spooning Australia
Gou Sushi would make my top five sushi venues in Sydney. It is way above standard and I recommend ordering off the menu over the train. If you visit and don’t order the green tea soba noodles with salmon and ontama you are a mug. And make sure you wash everything down with plum sake! Itadakimasu!
Full review is now up on Spooning Australia.
Postcards From Peta
Gou Sushi is a gamechanger in sushi restaurants, mostly freshly made sushi with some great train selections too. Located right across the road from Central station, in a great location. The sushi chefs are so talented and take time and so much effort into preparing every single dish. This is not just a sushi chain, it’s more of a boutique style, made to order, carefully thought out sushi menu. Perfect for date night, family night out or catching up with friends

Best sushi I ever had in Sydney, the rainbow roll is AMAZING, fresh food and fish, good type of rice, lovely the staff and fast, everything amazing I think! I will be back soon!

Let me start by saying the sushi selection on offer was wide variety and looked very fresh. I tried the salmon aburi which is my fave sushi but I felt it lacked that char flavour aburi is known for, and the portion size was much smaller than other places I frequent.

I got the spicy chicken karage which was not spicy at all, and was a little dry. Not the amazing dish that instagram suggests it to be, or perhaps I just stopped in on an off day.

They have a loyalty card so that is pretty cool.

For salmon aburi I much prefer Siore up on Foveaux St or shock horror, Sushi hub at Bankstown Centro is pretty good. Larger in size and super char flavour

On a quick walk by Gou Sushi, this place looks stylish and fun; Haven’s coolness rubs off on it too. Haven had exactly zero out of four dishes on their lunch menu for vegetarians so we went next door. Between my perception of stylishness and the rave reviews on Zomato, I was expecting it to be pretty good! However...
Live To Eat
Truly one of the best sushi trains in Sydney with an amazing lunch special price for most plates. Worthy of a short wait at lunchtime if busy. The restaurant clears as quickly as it packs up during lunch trade.

Rainbow Roll and the charred nigiri are highlights of the conveyer belt and the soups satisfy if you are in need of additional sustenance. Special rolls are constantly changing, as they do in Japan with available fish. This is the place to try something new as the quality is top shelf.

Wait time is very short for ordered items as there is generally a busy team of three in the kitchen. Only drawback in slightly inattentive wait staff but they seem not to mind if you waive across the restaurant when you need them.
I was surprised! It's quite nice casual sushi restaurant! Much tastier than any other sushi train or casual Japanese restaurants! More detail work, more flavor, Love it❤️

*Special thanks to Ompty for the invitation to try out Gou Sushi . Across the road from Central station is a new little sushi place called “Gou Sushi”. Although dim, the sushi place evokes intimacy as the sushi chef makes all his creations right in front of you.
Snapshots Of Food
Surry Hills is known predominantly for their cafe's, bars and certain chicken and burger shops. Not really does sushi, or even Japanese food other than Goros come to mind. Gou Sushi is a hidden gem located only a short walk away from Central station. Serving sushi with quality ingredients, Gou sushi is definitely worth visiting.

Love coming here for a quick lunch. The sushi train is always fresh but my favourite is the chowamushi - ordered off the menu, just make sure you order once you sit down to allow for cooking time.
Ever feel bad for eating something that's just too pretty?! 🍣 Well that's how I felt when I ordered this beautiful plate of #sashimi 🍱...and it tastes as good as it looks!👌🏻If you are what you eat, I'm healthy and gorgeous!😝 Thanks for an amazing meal @gousushi.syd @mybondisummer #gousushi #mybondisummer

Absolutely love it! The sushi is fresh and the dishes flavoursome and delicious. I highly recommend the beef tataki and the lobster tail tempura. The customer service is attentive and very warm. Street parking is relatively easy in the evenings with easy distance from central station.

Yes, there is a sushi train but don't expect a loaded conveyor belt of nigiri, sashimi and sushi rolls. In fact, to the unacquainted, the sushi train can appear quite barren but then, Gou Sushi is the antithesis of Japanese fast food. You won't find a production line of your standard sushi plates, instead, refined offerings of less uncommon sushi await you.

The 8-piece mixed sushi plate is a case in point with a perfectly plated selection of beetroot cured salmon, kingfish, fresh cuttlefish with mint and plum, boar fish with citrus pepper, spicy tuna on crispy rice, salmon belly, grilled beef with sundried tomato and seared Crystal Bay prawn. With its contrasting textures and clever flavour combinations, each mouthful will delight the senses.

Perusal of the menu reveals a choice of popular Japanese dishes including udon, donburi, tataki, tempura, katsu, karaage, seafood, and starters and salads, plus mixed sushi and sashimi platters. The kingfish carpaccio is an absolute must!

In short, this is no ordinary sushi train experience and you can expect a refined, yet casual Japanese dining experience.
The Next Rush

***edited 13JAN18***

Disregard the construction site alongside Central Station and seek out Sushi Gou for their exceptional and exquisitely presented mixed sushi plate. Or for a summer-friendly but substantial dish, slurp your way through a cold green tea soba with salmon and ontama.

Gou Sushi has a really good location, right near Central Station on the Surry Hills side but I'm surprised I've never been there. MW and I enter this little Japanese restaurant with no expectations. By the time we leave, we're both very impressed. There is a sushi train menu but I suggest you give this a miss and go straight to the menu. They also have different specials as well on the boards that change regularly. You have to order the

I have been to central station many times and walked down Chalmers Street many times. However I did not know of Gou Sushi. Lots of positive word of mouth in the foodie world led to visit to this restaurant. I vhs been totally missing out until now! This is hands down one of the best sushi train places i've been to. One associates sushi train with cheap, small and easy. This is not your regular sushi train. Yes, there are plates to buy going around on the train, but there is also a huge made to order menu that the chef makes right i front if you with significant care, and technique. Truly remarkable. Not only is this guy skilled, but also lovely and informative. We ordered some specials starting with a diced salmon mixture of wasabi flavouring and some spicy crackers - this was absolutely delicious. We then got the green tea soba which came out with fresh sashimi on top, a bottle of sauce to pour over and an egg to mix in. The flavours combined really nicely and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I decided to pick something off the sushi train and I picked the beetroot cured sashimi nigiri, this was delicious - probably the freshest sashimi i've ever had.
We then ordered the tempura lobster tail. How can this be so cheap! $14.99!! Pieces of tempura lobster set in the lobster tail with tartare! Incredible. Also ordered the tuna tataki, again very fresh and tasty tuna and beautifully plated. Although I was very full, I just had to order the sushi sampler. The chef had individually prepared each piece; spicy tuna on fried rice or the butter poached prawn, eggplant and seared meat! I watched him make this with great technique. Seriously this place is so good, I cannot wait to go back.

Coffeebrunchanddinner
The quality of the sushi, sashimi and other menu items at this sushi train is unbelievable, to the point you feel like you are dining at a top Japanese restaurant.

What a find this place is and it is conveniently located across the road from central station! We arrived for dinner at 7pm and took up a seat around the train where you can watch the dishes being made before your eyes. All of the sushi items from the train are a work of art, and we recommend ordering the mixed plate which has everything from crystal bay prawn to wagyu beef to sea-eel sushi. These were delicately presented and each had a unique taste that left you wanting more! The sea eel sushi is the owners favourite and once you taste it you will see why.

Make sure you order some of the other dishes outside of the sushi and sashimi offerings. The cold soba and salmon bowl and the beef tataki were standouts but if you are a tofu fan do not go past the agedashi tofu. For those that want something a little more adventurous try the steamed egg custard with prawn and soybean - a truly unique dish.

The staff are extremely friendly and be sure to chat to the amazing chef as you watch him work his magic to create these delightful dishes. The prices are much cheaper than what you would expect! You will soon add gou sushi to your list of go to places, just like we have!

Definitely worth to check out this casual japanese dining. Not only it is close to the station, you pay for a price of sushi train , in return you get something much better than sushi train plus a quiet place for dinner. Sushi is amazing - chatted with the chef they want to make fresh sushi for customers hence the belt seems empty. But if u dare to ask , you will definitely get something surprising !

They have also recently got a new menu which more options including hot food.

Used a groupon here. If you dine and pay according to the coloured plates, it can get quite expensive. Without the groupon, the bill would come to about $32 for 5 plates. The sushi is nice but i wouldnt come back because of price, many other sushi joints around the city.
Brett Richards
The food is ok but not a lot of food going around on the belt, so the choice was very limited. We have had better sushi. A bit disappionting. At least the beer was cheap.... for a restaurant in Sydney anyway. Probably wouldnt go back here........
The RnB Diary
What is the point to have $3.20 all plates when half of the belt is empty? Veggie rolls and california rolls kept coming along with signs pointing at empty belt where snappers, dragon rolls and the expensive stuff were supposed to be. The serving was small too. Usually if have sushi by myself, I would be stuffed after 3 plates, today I was only just full after 4 plates. It was a rash decision, next time I will stick with Sushi Rio.
Sydneyguyrojoe
Came for dinner and used one of those Groupon vouchers. Had nil issues using it but getting there at 5.30pm they are just starting to make the sushi. Everything I tried was of good quality but small in size. The California rolls were the best of the lot. Nil issues with service, but they could switch on the a/c. Pretty good sushi train here
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Chef Chun Man Lau (Rio) makes a powerful case for fusion at this new Surry Hills sushi train, using methods he honed endearing Yukiguni to Cabramatta’s diverse locals."We have to use the local ingredients - local fish or local ingredients - to make something new," says Rio.This explains why you’ll find spearmint, not shiso, topping beautifully crosshatched Squid ($3.60/2). Tiny cuts ensure the creamy raw squid crumples delicately on eating

We are very happy to have this fabulous new sushi train in our area. They had all our favourites on the menu, and everything we ordered was very tasty and how we like it. The staff were very attentive and the sushi chef (Rio) created some wonderful fresh dishes for us. Gou Sushi will definitely be a regular place for us now.
Alice Herbst
This place is new so we thought we'd try it out. We were really impressed! The salmon sashimi was really fresh and super tasty. The aburi salmon was a standout - yum! We also ordered the yakitori beef, salmon, tuna and chicken teriyaki sushi rolls. All were really delicious. We ended up ordering more of our favourites. Probably the best sushi I've had. Will definitely be back!
