Review Buon Gusto - Sydney

Food was Good, but not 5 stars amazing. Cozy setting. Very friendly and attentive service. Get the pizza with prosciutto if you’re after a good pizza. I was annoyed with the 1% surcharge but forgot to ask why they put it in there.

There is such an amazing vibe in this restaurant! I came here with a big group of friends and we loved all of the food we tried. They were very accommodating for all 15 of us and the food came out fresh for everyone. I highly recommend the Toblerone Martini, Crudo e Rucola pizza, Affogato and Macc Arancini!! My partner had the Folletto and inhaled it in about 5 minutes. You definitely get your value for money as they have big serving sizes. We will definitely be back as the staff were all so friendly and we felt so comfortable in the restaurant! Thank you to Buon Gusto for an unforgettable experience <3

Really nice little Italian restaurant, walking distance from carriageworks. Good authentic items on the menu and the pizzas were really nice. Checked red and white table cloth for the old school Italian look.

What a shame, I revisited here 04 Feb again, and they’ve changed all the menu. This lovely pizza is not available anymore. 😔 the five stars go back to two week ago ————————————————————— Lovely staff, amazing pizza, cheap price. ⭐️(On Tuesday, they only sell Pizza not Pasta. I’ll definitely revisit here to have pasta too.)

Such a cozy little spot. Their Quattro formaggi is delicious! Also had the crab ravioli which was a tad disappointing with the portion size. Overall it was a good dining experience. Would recommend if you’re in the area and looking to have an Italian dinner.

Incredible Italian food with homemade pasta and exceptional pizzas. The service was fantastic, felt really well looked after. The gnocchi is out of this world great and pizzas are some of the best I've had in Sydney. They do take away as well. The food is great highly recommended!

Cute little Italian place. Very warm and cosy atmosphere and staff are friendly and attentive. Would recommend the choc lava cake. Only negative is that they do not split bills.

Simple and delicious lunch menu consisting of paninis and salad bowls! $10 lunch special with free coffee! I admit it is not the greatest coffee but the food quality was not cheated on. Portion is big and ingredients tasted right. Special is for takeaway only and they pack up everything with quality material for you. Xihuahua 🐶 enjoyed her capone too much! A courtesy 5 stars from me! Me gusto!

Great value n fantastic service!!

Recommend their takeaway specials! $10 include a salad bowl and a regular coffee! How fantastic it is!

Coleslaw salad - what they offer! Huge portion and beautiful taste!

Sandwiches 🥪- cheese and smoked ham with dried tomato 🍅! That’s authentic Italian sandwiches! I miss it!

Great value and my papaGuorium🧪Ewas soooo excited for the food!!

Great service as well!!

We did Deliveroo with this restaurant. The food was very good value for money, tasted amazing and arrived on time. The wait (40mins) was a bit long seeing we live relatively close by but it’s probably because they were very busy

Wow, I’m so glad I finally checked out Buon Gusto after only living 5 min walk away. We ordered the Nero Calamaro (squid ink) pizza and the fettuccine carbonara. Both where excellent.

The pizza had salami, calamari pieces, and mozzarella. It was absolutely delicious, the dough was a beautiful and striking black colour with a perfectly crisp and chewy texture. The salami unexpectedly worked so well paired with the calamari.

Fettuccine was not too creamy and was salted perfectly, with substantial amount of bacon and mushroom. Will definitely be back soon!

Oh dear... ordered delivery on Menulog. Generous size for the price and free delivery is great. But the pizza was at least 10mins undercooked! Cheese was barely melted. Dough was not brown not cooked... so confused how someone could mistake it for cooked! Very very odd. I literally re cooked it in my own oven :/

Extremely over priced dishes which are the below standard quality. It seems the the change of ownership was a very bad idea.

Management team seems to be very unprofessional and the pasta dishes served was like those my teenage daughter would make at home.

Avoid if you can.

Avoid. You can get better italian food in Sydney.

Great service with friendly, and helpful, waiters. Terrible, bland, unappetising food (clearly had just come out of the microwave).

Buon Gusto has been open since the 1970s in a tiny inner city suburb of Darlington. The decor is the kind from every classic New York mob film you’ve ever seen – dark wood throughout, red and white chequered table cloths and Italian memorabilia dotted around. It’s undeniably kitsch but equally undeniably homely. The ambience is not dissimilar to many humble but top-notch restaurants we visited on a holiday trip in Italy.

Wow. I'm so shocked to see such terrible reviews on my favourite local place. I always find it quite interesting when I see 1 review on any one of these services , and it is only a poor review and a whinge. (free food baiters)
I've been coming to buongusto for a little while now - and am thankful for the service and food I receive each time. They really like to make you feel comfortable. The waiters are always smiling - not always the most common. Never had a problem being seated - on both lunch and dinner sessions (mid week only).
Menu wise ive tried octopus, garlic bread/pizza, fornarina macchiata, boscaiola, gnocchi, veal and pollo. All were lovely. I'm not the biggest dessert fan so I've only tried the gelato once - not much else which was nice.
Thank you always for your hard work.

I used to love this place for cheap pasta for lunch as I am a poor uni student. It used to make good bosciaola too and the waitress was nicer. Now this place has this really rude waiter and they have gotten rid of the lunch special. Getting rid of the lunch special is fine but they charged way too much. I calculated that I wouldn't get charged over 30 dollars in total but they charged me $34. Something was amiss. Also, when I told them I wanted to split the pay with cash and card, the waiter rudely told my friend to pay after looking into his wallet saying he has a lot of money. I miss the old staff, at least they weren't as rude and intrusive as this new waiter. The food was also sub par. The garlic bread was too oily and the boscaiola was bland and tasteless. Also, the pizzas are not available until 5pm which doesn't make sense to me. Never coming here again.

VERY AVERAGE SERVICE.We're locals and we've been coming to this restaurant for the past 10 years. The chef has changed and portion sizes have shrunken A LOT. We found ourselves paying $15 for a tiny takeaway box that was barely filled. We raised this with the chef and he didn't seem to care, telling us 'that's what it's worth'. Disheartening how not a single duck was given despite us being regulars.OVERALL SO-SO.

So, around Eveleigh Markets is kind of confusing. Cornerstone Bar seems like it should be a great idea, but we’ve been turned away because of a VIP function, and then, with an absolutely packed theatre event finishing (and patrons wanting to grab a bite to seat), no, the kitchen had closed. I’ve always wanted to try Buon Gusto though because it looks like it’s been open for a thousand years, and certainly since I moved to Sydney in 1999. So, look. I understand if people are disappointed in receiving an old fashioned meal that isn’t particularly delicate. My veal was kind of tough and the vegetables overcooked. But the sauce was rich and decadent and mmmm… it was damn good, and kind of made up for the rest.

Has it changed hands? Have loved it for years but last visit all was different - where are the nice Italian men showing you the specials on a plate? Food & service nowhere near what they were. Very sad but won't be going back.

A group well catered for. Our group of 10 people, some of whom came and went over the course of the evening were extremely well catered for - staff attended to our needs (some specific dietary requirements) and brought food at appropriate times. The food on the banquet menu was tasty, varied and plentiful. It made for a very pleasant evening at a reasonable price. We'll be back again!

Great atmosphere!. Fun and traditional, great dinner and lovely staff. No corkage is definitely a plus!

Delish!. Some of the previous reviews here are ruthlessly cruel, and, however articulate their authors, they clearly have no idea about food.
Tonight's veal parmigiana and calamari ripieni were beautifully cooked, tender as could be and served with simple, hearty veggies as you would find in the village in the home country. The garlic bread was crisp and light and the chianti by the glass a decent drop. All in all good flavours accompanied by a soundtrack of classic Dean and Frank.
How people could criticise this place for being 'old school' I don't know - from the warm welcome to the menu, the chequered tablecloths and the chianti bottles hung from the ceiling, Buon Gusto wears its colours with pride, so if you're not into that kind of thing then just go elsewhere and have your 'pomegranate gel' and 'parsnip foam' and whatever Heston Blumenthal-style overpriced pretentious nonsense is flavour of the moment.
My only only criticism was the large flat screen tv in the corner, the volume mercifully muted but the glowing screen still mesmerising to the young waitress. Thankfully, it is easy to ignore from most tables and by the time your aperitif and your dining companion have your attention you may forget it altogether.
Wish we'd made it here sooner and hope it lasts another 20 years so we can make the most of it.

-----04 Apr, 2014-----

Some of the previous reviews here are ruthlessly cruel, and, however articulate their authors, they clearly have no idea about food.
Tonight's veal parmigiana and calamari ripieni were beautifully cooked, tender as could be and served with simple, hearty veggies as you would find in the village in the home country. Great, Quick & Tasty Meal. Love this restaurant! Great family run business with quick and tasty pasta. The pizza is nice and the mains were great. Had a group of people and everyone loved it. We were after something quick and tasty and this was perfect. Not sure where the other reviewers ate because their reviews are not what we experienced. Really friendly staff and they have been operating for over 25 years. If the food and dining experience was as bad as the other reviewers have said they wouldnt have stayed open this long I think. The garlic bread is AMAZING! Great local restaurant in Darlington and perfect for pre theatre dinner if going to Carriageworks,

Horrendous. The bolognese sauce was nothing but brown, flavourless meat. The complimentary stale arancini did not make up for the overpriced, reheated slop we were served.

Buon Gusto has surely got to be one of the last of these terrible restaurants staining the city horizon. This place has been a local joke for near on 2 decades now, famous for no good reason.

With food worse than a seafood restaurant far too inland to trust, times simply can't get any worse. From the shocking entrees, reheated mains, and packet based cooking style there is noting here to enjoy. You could only use it as a kichty joke upon friends.

One to avoid is the only way to describe it. If unsure you could sit opposite at the pub watching them unload packed pasta and sauces while watching tv and desperately waiting for customers.

From the past. no blast.. It was getting late last saturday night. we'd come from a performance at carriageworks and hadn't eaten prior. cornerstone looked full, so, after some futile wandering (cheap thai on abercrombie was closed for eat-in; japanese only takes cash) and with starvation-induced brain fag setting in, we settled on this place. we'd had a takeaway pizza from here, once before, which I remember as ok, but this experience was disillusioning, on all levels. firstly, they hadn't bothered to set-up any tables outside: madness, as it was a balmy night and bloody hot inside, where there's no zircon or adequate circulation. the old school look of the place might be nostalgic, but you want to be comfortable, which I wasn't. we were more-or-less made to feel annoying when we wanted to switch tables, to be closer to a ceiling-fan. the greeting was 'authentic', but gruff and the plastic replicas of 'specials' brought to our table was bizarre and disturbing. I mean, if those were the specials, hey must have a very dedicated plastics fabricator at their disposal. needless, to say, plastic 'replicas' are neither appetising or representative. we might've overlooked that, but it was hard to overlook $22.50 for a bowl of pasta. especially when you know you can buy it for under two dollars a kilo. but even 22.50 would be ok, if the pasta was exceptional. but the gnocchi with red sauce my partner had was sauced virtually the same as my fresh pappardelle with meatballs. essentially, it was middle-of-the-road bolognese. the gnocchi's texture was questionable and the pappardelle was undercooked. no, not al dente, or even on the cautious side of al dente. undercooked. this and a shared salad (not bad) set us back well over sixty dollars which, for the quality, service and setting, or even if we had been getting quality, is quite ridiculous. of course, we later realised we'd been charged 23.50 for each bowl of pasta, when we should've been charged 17.50 for the gnocchi and 22.50 for the pappardelle. giving themselves a tip, by overcharging, really put the nail in the coffin. don't go there. not even if you're desperate. eat your own arm instead, if necessary.

Buon Gusto We were drawn .... Buon Gusto

We were drawn in by the warm appearance a d busy cosy decor inside.

When trying to look at the menu we were forcibly pushed to be seated at a table...

Once seated we were promptly presented with a lame mezze dish of next to raw bland cold veggies ..
I call it the hook to make you stay!!!

Once the pizza arrived it looked unpleasant and tasted even worse ...
Had me craving a supreme pizza from dominos.
Kind of like pretending your driving a Lamborghini whilst riding in a Datsun

Was over priced and a terrible experience on the taste buds ...

On the contrary the service was ok.

Antonino Gangitano

Bland and Overpriced. We were drawn to this place due to the warm atmosphere illuminating from the windows. The service okay, but the food was just bad. If you're going to charge $18.5 for a smallish pizza, it better be good...and it wasn't.
Didleysquat
Overpriced and underwhelming. Historically this restaurant had a decent reputation but it has really lost it these days. Overpriced food, everything seems to be re-heated, minimal toppings... it seems they have lost their passion!

Seafood Platter. Good quality food and a great place to eat out with friends !

DO NOT GO. I would not recommend this restuarant to someone i dont like. The food is terrible and who ever is the chef should learn how to cook veggies. The only good thing is there signature sauce but you cant eat it with bread because its all old and hard. The garlic bread was all burnt, the chicken was dry, there gnocci is horrible. YUK

Avoid. This place has been around for at least 20 years. The food used to be good hearty Italian, now it's just slop. The "specials" of the day are all pre-made and sitting in the fridge waiting to be heated. Nothing is fresh. It's a shame because the service and ambience are very good. I find it an insult when they don't think you'll know the difference between a freshly prepared meal or one that's been sitting in the fridge for who knows how long. Avoid this place.

Service was fine however the food was stuck in the past I.e. They haven't changed in 32 years.

Old school Italian.... Buon Gusto serves up traditional Italian nosh. Think massive plates of hearty pasta, veal involtini, buttery garlic bread, tiramisu, etc. Complimentary appetizers - arancini, polenta fritters, pickled veg - occasionally make an appearance.
Quality tends to be hit and miss as well. While my spinach and ricotta cannelloni was decent, my creamy seafood spaghettini on a previous visit wasn't fresh and tasted mainly of cream.
I'd prob return only if I had an insatiable craving for Italian food; otherwise, there's much better food in the area to be had.
Mikey
The food is terrible. The fish we had was over cooked and the pasta sauces did not taste fresh.
