Came a few nights on a business trip. Took advantage of the weekly special and the $10 steak was actually good believe it or not. Never going to be the best steak but I've had much worse.
Kindly our reservation was held for us during the busy lunch hours.
My Grilled Barramundi was slightly overcooked to the point where I could distinguish the taste of Extra Virgin Olive Oil which wasn't very pleasant due to its potency. The garden salad was fresh and generously dressed with balsamic. Sadly the chips were average thick cut chips and I was hoping for shoestring fries as most pubs have them in stock.
A friend had a vegetarian pizza that smelt and looked appetising.
Another had a lamb shoulder which was beautifully cooked & tender. Didn't really need the mint jus that came with it. The potatoes were roasted perfectly.
Another friend had a snapper special that was intricately presented though the portion was very small.
Another friend had a beetroot salad which was decent.
Nevertheless a great atmosphere, I believe they do some screenings as there is a projector screen on a brick wall in the upper outdoor area.
I needed a place for a quick but decent lunch following a Belvoir Street play and remembered having a fun night at the Strawberry Hills Hotel about ten years prior. Looked them up online and the menu seemed AOK - just what we needed - not a 5 star marvel for me to rave about on my blog but something for a quick bite with family and a friend.
I was surprised at how awesome the venue was. The upstairs was fantastic - a massive outdoor covered section, a large bar and some brewery equipment around the place. I already liked it.
It was a very hot day and while fanning myself with the menu something marvellous happened - the venue turned on a mister - the entire outdoor section filled with cool water mist. I did put the camera away and just enjoyed the cool down - reminded me of this time about 15yrs ago on a dance floor in Queenstown - can't remember the place but it was the middle of winter and we were all dancing and it was hot and sweaty - next thing you know - someone behind the bar presses a button and the entire roof of the nightclub opened - the best thing was that it was snowing - all the steam and heat went out and we dance in snowfall for about 15mins before they closed the roof and the venue steamed up even more haha.
But back to Strawberry Hills Hotel - it was a treat. We all enjoyed our food. Mum slayed her calamari, friend Gary devoured his burger and me and the step father destroyed a pizza each. I went the Chilli Prawn Pizza and while it was nice the pizza was more a triple mozzarella cheese with the odd prawn here and there. It could have done with half the cheese and more prawns but as a cheese porn whore I was in heaven doing cheese pulls and lapping up the cheese like the dog I am.
It's not fine dining but it is definitely near the top for decent pub food.
Jan17 Ordered the slow cooked lamb, it was absolutely delicious! Too good for being pub food actually. So if you are looking for good food here , you know what to order.
Tuesdays are t-bone Tuesday at the Strawberry Hills Hotel, where a delicious t-bone steak dinner is available for $12. It is a really good steak, and much bigger than it looks in my photos.
Strawberry Hills, an odd name for the establishment that it is. No delicate cupcakes or desserts like the name suggests, but instead we have there is fantastic pub food. Nestled a hundred or so meters up Devonshire Street, this eatery deserves better than the rating it has. The menu has a relatively wide range of food, from good ole pub classics to slightly more elaborate dishes. Most of which being below $20 is definitely a bargain.
Coming here with some friends we ordered the 14hr lamb shoulder, grilled baramundi, pork belly and potato wedges to share. The lamb was so perfectly tender and easily fell apart. The brussel sprouts and other vegetables were a great accompaniment and that apple balsamic and mint sauce simply divine. The grilled baramundi was great too but be careful there were small bones in it. The pork belly was a slight let down. The crackling on top was more chewier than it ought to be and the pickled vegetables weren't the best accompaniment.
Overall the food was great! Service was very fast, I'd say under 15mins, and also very friendly (especially the bartenders). The rooftop seating was definety a good choice. With the lighting dim, the roof cover half and the gas heaters blasting during the chilly winter night, it was the perfect cosy and intimate yet un-stuffy atmosphere.
The pork belly, lamb cutlets, and veal schnitzel are old favourites. Service is five star. My friend reckons that the 14 hour slow cooked lamb shoulder was the best she's had.
Strawberry Hills is a good pub well known for its food. Upstairs area has a much nicer feel than the ground floor, with nicely dim lighting in the evenings. I've been through the entire menu a few times at lunch and dinner; the food has always been great, especially for the value. If you're looking for cocktails, you'll pay more than a meal and they won't be anything special. $12.50 for steak, burgers, schnitzels every day is what you should go there for. For a little more, you can go for the shanks or one of their specials which always look inviting.
Nice food, and the prices aren't too bad. Chicken parmigiana was good, but a bit too much cheese. More ham would be better. There are better pub feeds out there, but the atmosphere is really nice upstairs.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This

Restaurants should be afraid when local pubs like this recently refurbished beauty, can offer up heaving plates of good quality, nicely-cooked produce with provenance listed on the menu, for under fifteen bucks! The best dish I ate was a set of Tuscan Por
Well great value and great view ill be back
The 350g rump hit the spot
Yum!. Delicious salmon & salt & peper squid.
One of the nice pub food places in Surry Hills. Not the friendliest service but the food & outdoor seating make up for that
What a great place for an inexpensive and delicious meal. I had the pork belly tonight and it was just brilliant. Also good is the fish and chips, lamb shanks and rump steak, but that pork belly was seriously terrific!
Really great quality pub food. Mains all $15 or under. With the recent refurb, it is now a great option for a good, cheap food in nice surrounds
Great Value for money. This is a great little Irish style pub with great steaks and chips. It has a quite village pub feel as if you were in the West Coast of Ireland. Reminds me a little of Gallway pubs and the kind of food they serve there. Great place for a mid week eat out.
Was here for a work Christmas party. Nice area on the rooftop. Food and drinks were good and option to order from your table by QR code is handy. Disappointed that we were kicked out at 11pm and told we couldn't move downstairs despite being a group of 50 for the majority of the night and spending good money since 7pm. Didn't really leave us feeling very valued. Led downstairs and straight out a door on to the street. Others were being let in downstairs but we had to leave. Seems a bit odd, so we took our business to a pub up the street. Other than that, was a good night and staff were attentive.
We dined in with friends up on the roof terrace. Great location. Service was prompt and we all really enjoyed our meals and the steaks were beautifully cooked...very tender.
There is a disabled access, as well as a lift and a disabled toilet ... so VERY accessible.
The issue is parking, although a little easier on a Sunday. The bonus is that the light rail goes right beside it so a great transport option.
Came to Strawberry Hills Hotel for one of our work social events.
Great host and service provided. We were located on the top floor with a portion of the area allocated for us.
The ambience and vibe was great, and the DJ was playing good music.
We got a number of their catering options - the food was absolutely amazing! Very flavourful, tasted fresh and was served hot!
Would definitely recommend it as a great option for companies and teams to consider for work events!
Well priced drinks and good food, cosy pub feel with a great roof top area where they rock the sport. Perfect for pre drinks and a bite en route to the SCG!
A very tasty burger and friendly (irish) staff upstairs made for a very pleasant lunch those fries were hot and crunchy
The rooftop area is a wonderful venue to dine before or after an SCG game. It serves honest, varied and quality pub food with friendly and speedy service being an added bonus for dining here.
