This was my first time having Nepalese food. The food definitely hits your taste buds, it's very rich and has so many great tasting herbs and spices. Great find in Newtown

After watching Jennifer Peedom’s amazing feature documentary Sherpa (2014) at the Sydney Film Festival, I approached Sherpa Kitchen in Newtown with more understanding. Rather than an occupational reference to people who carry things, Sherpa are an ethnic group living in the Himalayas, the mountainous region that spans Nepal, Tibet, India and Bhutan. This Newtown restaurant, located on busy King Street, showcases the Sherpa people's environment with a restaurant-length mural of snow-capped peaks. On the opposing orange wall you’ll find photographic scenes from Nepal, including colourful traditional clothing, and religious symbols running from prayer wheels to Buddha and the Hindu deity, Ganesh. Gold tablecloths and bright red chairs complete the restaurant’s bright and cheery look. Perhaps it’s these religious influences that mean you won’t find beef or lamb on the Sherpa Kitchen menu; though you won’t notice their absence with great goat to play with. Try it in the Sherpa Kitchen signature - Special Khasi Ko Taas ($15.99). This dish takes...

The food is simply divine. We were a bit hesitant due to the review. However we had a great experience. There’s the one waitress but she was simply efficient and friendly. Our overseas Singaporean guests were impressed with the food.

Sherpa Kitchen is a Nepalese restaurant located on King St in Newtown. It's been in Newtown for some time but the current owner has been there for about 18 months. Matt and I head here for a nice lunch. . There's gorgeous art work on the side of all things Nepalese that catch my eye. As it's a warm Saturday, I'm happy that there are a series of lunch specials. The lunch specials come with a choice of soft drink as well. I'm no expert in Nepalese cuisine but Matt is eager to try authentic Nepalese food.

4 of us went to this restaurant on a voucher so got to try a lot of dishes and I would say all were of a high standard.  The momos are good as  was the  chicken sekuwa.  Am not usually one for too much vegetarian but the pakoda was nice and not oily at all, and to finish the entrees we had an ordinary sounding dish called potato chop which was delicious.  Loved the dosai.  For main we had palak paneer (not my fave but nice enough), veggie korma - tasty, butter chicken -  also tasty and the stand out being the goat.  Nicest goat curry I've had with good tender meat and taste.  Service was great but there were not a lot of customers and our girl was helpful with suggestions.  Would like to go back and try other dishes also.  This is a good place for people that don't like too spicy a meal and the ones that want some flavour.

Loved this Nepalese/Indian restaurant. Tried their masala dosa and it reminded me of home! I don't think I can give a better compliment to an Indian restaurant :) Value for money

Always fabulous food for a relative cheap night out. We've dined here numerous times and it never disappoints. My only (small) let down was asking for extra hot chilli in all our food, and the dishes came out mildly spicy. More heat people!

Having said that, the flavours we're fab, the garlic naan a standout, and chilli meatballs a go-to dish.

Thank you!

Delicious and fine nepalese food. I have been here about 10 times and I have never been disappointed. Food is simply delicious! Very fine and perfectly spiced, full of flavours! Rotis are excellent! I recommend the lamb saag and chicken curry. Very nice customer service as well. The best nepalese restaurant in Sydney so far! A great address for a romantic dinner or a dinner with friends.

Sherpa Kitchen turns out to be pleasant enough but nothing to write home to the old country about. I am beginning to think that with a few notable exceptions, this is the best you can hope for from a King Street eatery. Still, we live in hope of finding another rare gem like Thai La-Ong.

Very tasty, full of spices and flavour. Highly recommend the 'Quanti Dal'. First timer here, taken by my friend who is a regular. We decided to go to this place 2 wks prior to our trip to Nepal (Kathmandu).
Started off with 'Singada', which are layered filo triangles filled with baby peas and mashed potato served with mint sauce.
Then we had the 'Quanti Dal' and 'Mushroom and Spinach' and papadums and rice.
We enjoyed all the dishes, especially the Quanti Dal, which is described as 'Red kidney beans and a mix of lentils gently simmered with garam masala...' was simply delicious with bursting flavours!

We ate vegetarian from starter to mains, but didn't even notice it was lacking meat as it was so full of flavour.
Definitely will be back after our trip to Kathmandu, and highly recommend to others!

Excellent and consistent. The staff are pleasant and try their best under busy and thus stressful conditions. If I haven’t made a booking I aim to arrive prior to 7:00 pm, past this time it becomes pretty busy most nights. This obviously increases the wait time for the food to be served.

The entrees are enjoyable, the stand-outs are the lamb chops, garlic prawns and the mo:mos (vegetarian). The menu offers a wide variety of tastes to suit everyone.

The curries are great; I have tried almost all of them. I've found that overall the chefs have devised a perfect blend of spices to produce an aromatic and delectable fare. If I was to recommend a couple of curries, it would be the fish curry, a slightly salty coconut based sauce with white fish. The second would be the quanti dahl, a mixed bean and lentil dahl with a tomato base.

I have been a patron of Sherpa Kitchen for about 4 years now (30+ visits in that period) and the restaurant has only disappointed me a few times a couple of years ago. They have since returned to the high quality that isn’t found in most Indian-esque establishments.

Very Pleasant. Attentive waitress, tasty and filling food. We particularly enjoyed the mushroom and spinach dish. The garlic roti was superb and I wished I had ordered two. BYO wine only. Decor a little better than other similar Newtown restaurants.

No fermented yak butter anywhere to be seen. The food is delicious - especially the Chinese-Indian kind of fusion dishes - though the mono dumplings lacked their usual sparky chilli sauce. Visit here cos it is good hearty food and well-priced.

Amazing!. The staff here are SO friendly and everything was brought out quickly. The food was tasty - i'd never had Nepalese food before, but would describe it as a mild Indian cuisine. I will definitely be going back to this restaurant again.

In and out like an untethered goat. This was very much on spec as Mrs P and I strolled busy King Street with an hour to eat before a Saturday night movie. Most of the popular spots were chockers so we chose Sherpa Kitchen on the basis it had a few empty tables. We came without alcohol so being licenced was a plus.

A quick read of the menu and our order was promptly taken, with requests for beer and wine by the glass. We started with Sherpa Chaat Suprise ($8.50), baby spinach leaves, diced potatoes, chickpeas with a slightly too sweet yogurt sauce.

Our mains were goat curry ($16.00) and a creamy spinach cottage cheese dish ($12.50) served with Basmati rice ($3) and a tasty garlic roti ($3.50). The food was fresh but a little bland, though enjoyable just the same.

Service was efficient and the bill came quickly when requested. Nothing to complain about here and I would happily come again.

The food is great, but. The food here is wonderful and we have taken friends here a few times, and eaten a few times ourselves.
But, you need to be prepared for lack of service in regards to alcohol. If you bring your own wine, you will enjoy the meal more as they do not regularly ask you if you want more drinks.
The food is what we go for, and its authentic and delicious. The prices are reasonable, so its best to order heaps of dishes and share.

We had dinner here on a Thursday night with friends and enjoyed a very relaxed, tasty meal. We had three dishes between four plus roti and rice, and two entrees to share which was plenty. And it only cost us $20 each! Bargain & lovely food.

Like it, don't love it. I couldn't help but get excited when I noticed this recently-opened Nepalese eatery on King Street. The menu sounded promising enough, yet didn't totally satisfy when we paid them a visit. I know Nepalese food is basic no-fuss fare, Hell, I ate enough of it trekking to Everest base camp & bumming around Kathmandu.
The Maji ko Macha - fisherman style fish curry cooked with mustard seed was overcooked and the mustard seeds were virtually nonexistant. I think I saw three.
The Khasi ko Tarkari - house style aromatic goat curry was nice enough and incredibly rich.
The Crispy Pancake was exactly that, only on the edges, and mushy and uncooked in the centre. Ordinary.
Service is pleasant and friendly and if you BYO be prepared to pay $2.50 per person for corkage.
The overall experience was pleasant but wouldn't make me return any time soon. Being newly-opened, perhaps they were still settling in, but at this point I know of a better option on Crown Street.

Good little place, open late which is super convenient. Butter chicken is amazing, however super expensive. Almost $20 for a half full standard-sized takeaway container. The portions are too small for the price. Best to go for a treat rather than for a meal.

The butter chicken is out of this world but the kitchen works so slowly that you wait ages for the food. My husband tried the medium lamb curry and it was more like a stew. We do return for the butter chicken (a family favourite) and my husband has had other dishes successfully, but we try to go when we're not hungry yet!
