Waited a long time to be seated, they seemed overwhelmed despite not being overly packed. Once seated the service was very polite and friendly, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Good tonkatsu and udon.
In the corner by the entrance sits a sushi counter. I love sushi counters. Sushi ought to be eaten at a sushi counter...
...but I'm with my family now and the kids need a place to sit. The waitress is very accommodating and helps us to our table. It's a nice little place, well designed with large windows and simple decor. I note the daily specials on the wall and the karaage tuna and kisu tempura both catch my eye. Maybe next time though as we have already settled on our orders - the lunchtime sushi set for $15.50 – sushi, salad, agedashi tofu and miso soup. This should be good.
I enjoy the entree dishes first. My wife comments that the salad is nice (and it is) but that the dressing is quite strong. It seems that I am going to need a lot of ginger to remove the taste before I move on to the sushi. It's okay, we're eating a lunch set though I do take a peek at the counter.
The sushi arrives. It looks nice though I am thinking that the plate is a tad large. The stars of the show, all eight pieces plus rolls, look a bit lonely sitting on it. But it's okay, it's just a lunch set. I glance over at the counter...
I begin with the snapper whose texture I almost miss. I'm thinking to myself that I would like to try this one ala carte one evening. I try the fatty tuna. It’s nicely formed and thick but alas, no melt. The salmon tastes basic and the aburi salmon has a quick singe of flavour to it but not much going on in the way of fat. Going through the rest of the pieces - the prawn, flying fish roe, egg, eel and tuna & salmon rolls - I am thinking to myself, not to worry, it's only a lunch set.
..
...I steal another glance at the counter.
Next time, I'm going ala carte.
We had a pretty decent meal at Sushi Masa. The service was alright, but one thing that was really strange was that we were only given one menu to share between three. When I asked for another menu, the waitress told us that there wasn't enough to go around (say what? The restaurant was almost empty when we went!). So that was pretty strange.
Anyway, we decided on some sashimi and hot food. Waiting time was pretty decent. The sashimi came first and it was really fresh and yummy! The duck udon was great as well, really different to the usual soup stock. However the noodles were a bit over cooked and soft.
The tonkatsu was really nice too! It was probably the dish I enjoyed the most. The meat were cooked and fried well- really moist on the inside yet crispy on the outside! The only letdown was the serving size. It was really small and wasn't really worth the price of $14.
The chicken karaage was pretty average.
Anyway, it was a pleasant meal all in all. The prices were quite reasonable too (except for the tonkatsu)!
Amazing deal for the lunch set. Sushi was fresh and portions were very generous. Will definitely be back to try the exciting specials on the board like duck udon!!
Food and pricing are good. The down side are the waiting time and choice. Staff are very polite and apologize for the waiting time. Menu are mainly focused on sushi, not much choice for other mains.
My Favourite Japanese in Australia!. So yummy! Go here almost every night when I am in Sydney. It's some of the tastiest, freshest, well priced Japanese you'll ever eat.
The sashimi salad is a winner, and the dressing it the best part. The nasu dengaku is also amazing and the teriyaki salmon is delicious. It's the best Japanese dishes done to a really high quality in a small and humble restaurant that is virtually unknown. Do yourself a favour and eat here.
5 years of great reliable eating here!. Found Sushi Masa 5 years ago when looking for sashimi for a party and saw their good reviews online. Since then it has been our go-to restaurant and has been totally reliable over all of that time. This is so unusual in Sydney where restaurants hit the scene running but are unable to maintain a good standard. It's difficult to find better Japanese food than this but the value is outstanding and I repeat, it's really reliable. As a cheap, consistent, comfortable restaurant you can't go past Sushi Masa.
Fantastic!. Great food, great service, great atmosphere! My favourite Japanese restaurant! Love it :)
Always happy!. This is my local Japanese restaurant. And I go there not only for convenience but for the superb for that they keep serving. The food is fresh and very tasty. the attention to deal is great and it's no too pricy (as per normal with Japanese restaurants) I highly recommend this restaurant.
Hidden gem. We have eaten here several times as a family of 4 with two older kids. The standard menu items are great quality and the specials are always lovely too. There's always something a little different on the specials list that doesn't disappoint, like the duck udon soup we had last time. The bento boxes are great value, big enough to fill up hungry kids. The staff are very friendly and on the ball.
It was a Saturday Evening, we didn't have a booking and were asked to sit on the bench in front of the chef, which was good, but couldn't see what he was doing.
The atmosphere was great, couples and family's.
The food was high quality.
Entree: beef slices very nice
Main: don and sushi were fresh and quality
Nice black beer...
Hidden Gem. This place is an absolute hidden gem of the area. I hunted down the restaurant a while back after reading the consistently good reviews and was not disappointed. As a result of its delicious dishes, attentive service and great pricing, I've eaten here well over ten times. If you haven't been, it's well worth checking out. Only minor recommendation would be more frequent changes in the specials menu.
I eat at the Sushi Masa at least once a week and the food is always fantastic! This place has the best sushi in Sydney and is decently priced for the good that you get. This place hadn't changed it's prices in 5 years and still continues to deliver excellent food. My other menu favorites are the beef tataki, chef's special sushi, deluxe sashimi platter, chicken katsu and the teriyaki chicken. However, all the food at this place is prepared to an excellent standard so it's hard not to like anything on the menu!
Simply the best. If you love FRESH, traditional sushi/sashimi then this is the place for you. Masa-san never fails to impress us with his creation, the quality of his food are surreal and always always keeps us coming back for more!
Yummy eggplant. The nasu dengaku is so delectable - creamy smooth eggplant topped with a shiny miso glaze that perfectly balances the salty miso flavour with sweetness of mirin. I could just eat that on rice. The sashimi is very good too. The place is surprisingly full for a neighbourhood Jap restaurant
Love the food! Though over priced.
We had the green salad with was fresh with that lovely Japanese dressing that I adore. The agedashi tofus broth was a little too subtle? The highlight was the ever so tender grilled eggplant with scrumptious glazed miso sauce. This was followed by the sushi sashimi platter which was not something we will come back for. But we will be back for more eggplant and green salad as we hunt for other items on the menu that we might adore.
My absolutely favourite Japanese restaurant. Owned by Japanese and very authentic. Excellent fresh sushi and reasonable prices. Definitely go visit!
Still the best beef tataki in Sydney. Pricey but excellent quality and very fresh!
Wow surprise great restaurant in Annandale. California rolls with prawn not seafood stick. We ate at the sushi bar watching the chef. Spider Roll $14 delicious. Highly recommended! Gyoza special also excellent!
Very unassuming Japanese restaurant with a back to basics mentality. You'll find no Instagram worthy monster sized rolls drizzled in sauces. Just quality basic sushi like what you might find in Japan. Overall very tasty and very friendly staff. The only thing missing was a hearty 'irrashimase!' by staff
Good fresh salmon roe and nigiri.
The sashimi lunch set has better variety than other japanese restaurants we've been. The set lunch portion/size is similar to others and good value.
Both waitresses are friendly and respectful.
Overall, a good Japanese restaurant, serving fresh food like the ones found in Japan.
Note - food has been half eaten when photo was taken. Delicious :)
Classic Japanese sushi bar. Pretty authentic and high quality. Attentive service, kid friendly.
Sushi Masa has been in Camperdown for many years which is a testament to the restaurant's quality of food. It's has always delivered on this point and I cannot remember ever being disappointed by the food here.
The service is kind if somewhat erratic during busy times. (Arrive early to avoid this becoming a problem). It is this aspect that earned them the 4 (rather than 5) star review.
I personally love the general feeling of authenticity - it always feels like we are in a suburban Tokyo restaurant - and am told by Japanese friends that it meets their expectations in this regard.
It's a neighbourhood restaurant so it's not fine dining but it is very pleasant and kind of cool in a funny way. Lighting is softish and it is a quiet place to enjoy your meal. Highly recommended for a small group, family or couple. There are seats at the bar that are good for solo diners too.
