Review White Taro - Sydney

Camille
Amazing customer service ! Very friendly staff. Food was great, ordered a granola bowl and veggie platter. Poached eggs were runny and well cooked. Preferred my ice coffee with less shaved ice, but nonetheless was sweet and tasty. Backyard seating was super chill on a weekday morning . They have a cute little flower wall in the backyard, perfect for photos. If you're looking for a place to chill, this cosy cafe sets the vibe !

Fantastic food with friendly smiling service. The location is super convenient (on a quiet street in Surry Hills and so close to Central Station)and decor is simple yet stylish. We ordered a variety of dishes and their flavours, textures and presentation were excellent for the price. Nice portion sizes and nutritious too!

Croissants fresh from the oven is reason enough to kick off your day at White Taro. Perfectly poached eggs is another. Great coffee is a bonus. But where White Taro shines is with the attitude of the staff and attention to the little details such as fresh flowers on the table. An absolute delight! I'll be back

Hands down one of the best burgers ive had at a cafe. The chips are substantial and filling, not fluffy full of air. The patty was fresh, generously large and perfectly medium rare as all great beef burgers should be. Super cozy setting with great music. Keep blasting that Bruno Mars, Fergie and Queen.

The food is "so good"....coffee is meh...doesn't pack a punch but don't let that deter you from visiting this place. Throughly enjoyed the small backyard ambience. If you like Vietnamese cuisine then give this brekkie place a try.

The flame grilled chicken baguette was really difficult to eat, but was really good nonetheless. The order took a really long time but in compensation they were very kind and gave us a chocolate brownie for waiting, as well as extra fries when we received our meals! The deconstructed banh mi was fine, but might be easier to eat if it wasn't deconstructed :p their chai latte is average, nothing amazing but it is fine.

Nice cafe. The iced vietnamese coffee was great on a hot day. The What the Pho had a grandma, Homely feel to it but we enjoyed the corn fritters.

An intimate cafe with Vietnamese fusion elements. Serves some delectable dishes, make sure to get seated in the back porch area.

I had been to White Taro a number of times before the COVID-19 crisis lockdown. The Viet-inspired dishes are just lip-smacking delicious and the coffee is always consistently good. Lastly, the service is warm, friendly and efficient! #whitetaro

People are very friendly and they respect your time to spend there. Though the "Vietnamese fusion" menu is quite interesting, the taste was not really something fascinating. Still good and worth to go.

White taro is a vietnamese fusion brunch place in Surry Hills and they do have very interesting menus that are creative and delicious. The staffs are very friendly and helpful and always serves with a smile. The bacon waffle was delicious!

White Taro used to be a standout cafe in Surry Hills, serving Vietnamese inspired brunch. Sadly, it seems to have changed management and quality has declined. The insipid Chook in Broth was a far cry from the delicious, flavour packed bowl we enjoyed two years ago. The beef baguette was full of sinew and my friend had a hard time chewing it.My friend found her corn fritters bland and needed to slather relish generously. Best dish of the day (which isn't saying much) was the chicken baguette, with some nice grill marks and smoky flavour. Service was friendly but ultimately, I don't think I'll be back for the subpar food.

Worse than average, sorry to say:| The only stand out was the service, staff was so lovely and caring. My matcha latte was too sweet, the feedback across the table on food wasn’t good. I had the baked egg & bread with salmon, not sure why soaked the bread in egg and baked together, texture came out pretty chewy, also slightly burnt. The pork belly was so so dry and tasted no seasoning at all in the deconstructed Vietnamese bun dish - thought this may be one of the specialties, but it let us down.

Had a great brunch here last weekend. The food is interesting (Vietnamese fusion), the lobster waffle special was top notch, and the service is really good. Recommend

White Taro is a Vietnamese fusion restaurant in Surry Hills which offers a contemporary interpretation on several classical and familiar Vietnamese dishes. The corner cafe is tightly packed and features huge mirrors and windows to create a naturally lighted space.

I ordered their Vietnamese coffee and deconstructed Banh Mi. On the one hand, the coffee was atrociously sweet and the unmissable concentrated condensed milk made me nauseous and lose all appetite.

On the other hand, the deconstructed Banh mi, a mini buffet of pork belly, house made apple and date chutney, vegetable pickles, spiced hamquat butter and kimchi, was as deconstructed and dissociative as it sounds - All unrelated ingredients which were forcibly combined together.

The mishmash of cuisines is probably too gimmicky and a failure.

Situated in the heart of Surry Hills - the cafe epicentre of Sydney - White Taro brings a fusion of modern Vietnamese flavours and traditional brunch fare to the scene.

I opted for something slightly different and definitely decadent with the Lobster Waffle. This was served in a manner vaguely reminiscent of Eggs Benedict with the shellfish balanced on top of three light-as-feather waffles and topped with hollandaise sauce and two poached eggs. Wilted spinach and oyster mushrooms completed the spectacular dish.

I accompanied it with a Chai Latte that was somewhat on the weak side but certainly not the worst I've had in Sydney.

The venue itself is small but with a charming courtyard to the rear perfect for sunny days in the city.

After reading some of the reviews I was a bit concerned about this place. I was pleasantly surprised. It was great. I had the chook in broth, which was very nice. Good quick friendly service for a Friday lunch time crowd. Friendly people.
Love At First Bite
Find us on instagram: loveatfirstbite_aus

White Taro is a Vietnamese fusion cafe in Surry Hills serving a range of classic and interesting brunch dishes. We had heard great things about this cafe and have been here twice and will share what we ordered on both visits.

On the first visit, we ordered the Viet skewer chicken burger with mixed lettuce, papaya, grain and seeds and aioli on a housemade charcoal brioche. I got the side of chips instead of salad because #treatyoself. The chicken was tender and full of flavour and went nicely with the sweet papaya and aioli sauce. To be honest, I did not feel like this dish had a lot of Vietnamese elements except for the papaya, it tasted mostly like a standard chicken burger, but was still nice and tasty!

Food would probably be 3.5 stars. I have taken two stars away for awful service
- kept waiting to get the menus, another 20 mins wait to order
- keep waiting for cutlery after getting the soup
- asked for some chili sauce, which didn't arrive till the end
Beautifully presented food. Highlights are the deconstructed Vietnamese pork roll - actually, so much of it is good. They really put in a lot of effort with their food. Another highlight - their homemade cookies! This is one of my favourite brunch/lunch places (they're a bit heavy for breakfast).

Dissapointing 2nd visit to this cafe, was keen to get back here after seeing multiple items on the menu i wanted to try. Had the smash em Veggie and was served a very small & mediocre looking meal. I was basically presented with a single piece of sourdough with avo, 2 poached eggs and a smear of 2 purees for $18.50. After reviewing the menu when i left my dish had been missing 4 of the stated items on the menu - haloumi, kale, fetta, roasted tomato all the things that would have completed the dish and the reason i ordered it. If they had run out, then tell me. Very disappointing brunch experience and most certainly wont return.

The service is pretty decent, food was average and they seemed to out of stock of a lot of things. The coffees were terrible, and even after them being remade they were still bad. We didn't drink them but they kindly removed them from the bill.

Overall average and we won't be back.
Betterresult
A 40 min wait despite the place being half empty - by that I mean after the drinks arrived the plates took forever.

Tried the known lobster waffles, not really that great. Small serving.

Carrot juice was more like 90% apple juice.
Salena
The waffles we had were great! I always love the blend of ice cream and waffles and this was no exception, especially with the summer fruits. I tried the grilled Watermelon Salad though and that was a ... peculiar taste. It wasn't horrible but wasn't something I particularly liked either. The prawns of that fish was spit on though.

White Taro dares to take risks with Vietnamese ingredients in a cafe style eatery that is innovative and fresh.

Coffee was good, but of course one should try the Vietnamese coffee, which is coffee strong and sweet. The deconstructed pork roll crackled but can be messy and had kim chi (pickled Korean cabbage)? Chicken broth is great for a cold day and while the pho had plenty of herbs and grilled scotch fillet, it just doesn't taste like 'pho'; nor should it since we are in a cafe. We are a fan of the scrambled eggs with prawns (generous and fresh). This place has seriously one of the best omelettes in town!

There's lots to try and we will definitely be back for the rest of the menu.
Tess
We got the grass fed Scott fillet baguette and the chook in broth. The scotch fillet was the best I've had in a long while. It's cooked perfectly (I like my steaks medium) and the bread was incredibly soft and fluffy on the inside, and crispy in the outside. The chook in broth was flavourful - exactly what you'd expect with chicken soup. A good second option to pho.
We enjoyed ourselves overall and the staff were very friendly and open to helping us choose the food. Will be back again
Bon Bon
Been here for a weekday breakfast. The cafe was full with ppl. Was welcomed by the asian lady owner and she recommended a few signature dishes of theirs. Most of their dishes are fusion with strong vietnamese influence. So i decided to order a baguette which was called deconstructed banh mi with pork belly. It also comes with pate, kimchi, tomato relish (really nice one), pickles and butter. The pork belly is really crispy and well seasoned. As the dish comes deconstructed meaning I have to put all the ingredients together. It turn out abit messy on my plate but the combined flavour is really good. Will certainly be back to try more.
Randomness_of_existence
Ventured out to White Taro on a nice, sunny Saturday afternoon. It was already pretty full past midday, but managed to quickly get a seat outside.

There's a lot on the menu. We decided on the white taro pho bo and the Viet skewer chicken on a black brioche bun. The food came out quickly and looking at the portions, they were a decent size. The pho had a deep, strong flavour with a good portions of scotch fillet. I loved the charred taste of the skewer chicken and it went well with the crunchy lettuce and papaya.
Valerie Do
I definitely had higher expectations when I came to White taro, we got the bo kho but were a little disappointed because it was a bit too watery as we thought it would be a thick stew/ curry texture instead of a soup.
The black bun burger was nice but a big mess to eat (probably best to eat with a bunch of tissues next to you haha). The iced mocha was nice but thought it would be a blended ice mocha instead of a mocha with ice.
Place was quite small but cosy.
Omnivore
Great Vietnamese fusion food - in a cute cafe with friendly service. Don't expect Pho in the traditional sense - we all had their WT Pho Bo- rich decadent broth with 180g of perfectly cooked scotch fillet steak. Lovely coffee- they do panda coffee art on their mochas! So many options on the menu to try - we will be back for the deconstructed banh mi! (Ps, also kid friendly and accomodating proprietress, thank you!)
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
The problem with Sydney's Vietnamese cuisine is that it looks so fresh and vibrant in photos, we can be lured, by platforms like Instagram, into thinking a restaurant is going to be great, then arrive to find the dishes lacking in flavour. I have no such complaints about the offerings put out by Angie Hong, mother of Executive Chef Dan Hong, who you’ll likely know from Mr Wong, Papi Chulo, El Loco or Ms G’s.Arising some years after Angie Hong sold the last of her Thanh Binh restaurants, this short-term, night time pop-up at White Taro in Surry Hills affords you a rare opportunity to eat at her dinner table. A surprisingly long menu provides plenty of choice for meat eaters and vegetarians alike in this tiny, homely corner-store cafe.In Sydney Vietnamese is practically synonymous with fresh rice paper rolls, but here you should hit up the Vietnamese Deep Fried Rice Paper Rolls ($12/3) instead. With the perfect combination of crunch and chew, these golden, caramelised rice paper-wrapped batons of lean pork mince and crab meat are bursting with flavour. Accompanied by a veritable forest of fresh and lightly pickled vegetables, and a classic ‘nuoc cham’ dipping sauce, they eat so freshly, they belie being fried. The wine list is...

Cute little cafe. Got the maple bacon waffles. Great presentation but a bit too sweet for breakfast. Waffles were really light and crispy. Steak baguette was not bad. Huge chunks of steaks. Coffee was average. We had a table outside but was pestered by so many flies. Otherwise was a nice experience.
Cqljyk
Surprisingly good! Grilled chicken burger with nice mayo, lobster waffles is nice but don't need to add the extra $5 for truffles, unless u wonder what it tastes like, roll is crispy outside n soft inside match with the butter n liver. But the pork belly is quite disappointed, very chewing, not tender! Vietnamese milk tea is bitter.

White Taro is now open for dinner. It has been operating as a breakfast and brunch place but has been open for dinner for a week now. Great little Vietnamese place, a nice environment and trendy decor. I arrived and was eating alone on this instance. The waiters were very nice and hospitable. The waiter offered me two places of free prawn crackers - delicious! I pondered over the menu and decided on a pork dish. It was pork two ways (a belly and a sausage) with a sweet sauce, a bowl of lettuce and mins and a bowl of vermicelli. A great meal. There were plenty of Vietnamese choices, entrees, shared plates for 2 or 3. Not heaps for me as a solo eater but would be great for groups. A range of desserts as well. I was offered 20% off for its opening special which made the price reasonable. Otherwise I think it is a bit expensive.

Angie Hong is in the kitchen. The food is coming out thick and fast. If you've always lusted over the Instagram pics that are #mondayhongdinners, this is a dream come true. It's all part of the new dinner service at White Taro commencing quietly last week. Minimal fanfare and muted publicity meant the dining room was only half-full when we visited on the weekend. Don't expect that to last. The food is far too good for word not to spread like wildfire.

Perfect brunch style View fusion! I'm in love ❤️

The baguette was amazing, plus beautifully cooked beef stew Bo Kho. Will definitely try the deconstructed banh my next time, crispy pork belly just can't go wrong for the Viets!
Melissa Gabriele
Their deconstructed banh mi is very photogenic. Love it so much and couldn't believe that there is a slice of pork belly that beautiful on my plate. I mean pork belly and edible flowers usually don't go together. Their other food on the menu tastes quite average, but their banh mi is just awesome. Their service is also very good, I remember it was rainy outside and they gave us free muffins as we wait inside of the cafe for the rain to stop. I also noticed that they strike up nice and long conversations with the people in the cafe, including me. How nice!

A hip, modern Asian-Australian cafe has huge appeal to me and I’m pleased this is so close to where I live!. I’ve been meaning to try this little cafe for a while. I sadly only was able to eat at the restaurant in the same spot two times before it closed; it was a super old-fashioned Aussie cafe with a family-run feel and cheap prices. The only place like it in the neighbourhood, I found it charming.
Phfat
I had the wild mushrooms breakfast which was nice but the flavours were not very strong. I would probably try the breakfast bun next time as a friend recommended it! Order with a dirty chai 👌

What happens when you want to see a friend, have a mad craving for waffles, and it is a public holiday? Go have brunch at White Taro, of course. White Taro is a relatively new addition to the Surry Hills cafe scene, situated on the corner near Reuben Hills and serving fusion Vietnamese-cafe fare. As a Vietnamese, I can't comment on the quality of the Viet fare because I was too busy digging into its sweet waffles.

You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find a cafe that served waffles and was open on public holidays. In fact, it was almost a task in itself to find a sweet and savoury cafe (i.e. not dessert cafe) that served waffles. It appears that waffles have been replaced by other indulgent dishes. The fried chicken and waffle trend that was so popular a few years ago? Removed from all but 2-3 cafes. Looking for classic Belgian waffles? Prepare to look hard.

Thankfully, the search was worth it and the waffles at White Taro ticked all of the boxes: they were crispy on the outside, airy on the inside; and were served with a scoop of ice-cream and seasonal fruits. To counterbalance the potential dryness, they were accompanied by a small jug of maple syrup, which we poured generously over our dishes. The almond flakes added some extra texture and appeal to my dish.
A Food Fable
So we wanted to walk all the way to Gratia, but didn’t quite make it there. Since the Hills Buses no longer go to Railway Square, it’s made us a bit lazier to travel to Surry Hills and beyond. We started climbing the hill and settled on this cafe instead. Address: 67 Albion Street, Surry Hills
Anna
With a pretty big menu you’re bound to find at least one thing up your alley. After ooh-ing and ahh-ing over a few options, I settled for the no carb’s brekky. It did have quite a bit going on but I enjoyed the light balsamic glaze and relatively healthy feed. It was a decent light breakfast. Detox Time! was very refreshing and has to be one of the nicest juices I have had.

White Taro is within reasonable walking distance from Central station and has quite the simple exterior, giving off fresh inviting vibes.

You had me at Vietnamese fusion…

So, I’m a sucker for 2 things when it comes to cafés. 1) Anything Asian. Fusion, straight up, I don’t really mind. 2) Cafés that don’t differentiate between breakfast and lunch. One menu fits all, most certainly fits me!

With that in mind I had 2 pretty big reasons to like this place. Their Vietnamese-German owners know how to infuse western food with their Vietnamese heritage to make the menu very far from boring. Dishes range from the more typical breakfast dishes through to full meals that would be more common on a lunch menu. BUT you can order anything off the menu all day long, or at least during their opening hours between 7.00-4.00.

It’s a sunny autumn day, so the backyard that opens on to the sidewalk is a perfect spot. There are also a few larger share tables inside. Concrete floors with warm wooden benches and large black framed mirrors give the space an industrial chic feel, with black metal stools completing the look.

White Taro is a relatively new runner in Surry Hill’s ever-growing cafe scene. Setting up shop right opposite Reuben Hills on Albion Street, I’m not sure if this is the smartest idea ever – or the worst idea. I guess it could go both ways? However with a mega East Asia (namely Vietnamese) influence on their dishes, White Taro is far from what Reuben Hills represents.

Poach your appetite with unique Vietnamese-inspired brunch flavours starting with the “smash'em'veggie” which had a good balance of taste and textures. Continue with the “veggi breakfast bun” on matcha brioche bun, which unfortunately wasn’t a stand out for my palate, but the “no carb’s brekky” was a simple dish made beautifully.

Great Vietnamese-inspired brunch menu. It's extremely cosy plus all their house-baked treats fill the space with warm aromas. Keen to go back and try other menu items

TAKEAWAY CUSTOMERS BEWARE!!

So they have a takeaway menu which is on average $3-4 cheaper than the identical items on their dine-in menu. Upon entering, we were told all items on dine-in menu are available for takeaway as well. So far so good.

As we were looking at the dine-in menu, a waitstaff offered us the takeaway menu (which is $3-4 cheaper, remember?) but the waitstaff was 'hushed away' by the Asian lady owner. Knowing what is going on, we ordered few items on the takeaway menu and a single item on the dine-in menu, only to be charged the FULL DINE-IN PRICE for everything we ordered.

Come on.. Why have a slightly CHEAPER takeaway menu PASTED on your front windows when you are going to do a bait-and-switch on your customer? Food was ok 2.75/5 but that greediness over a few dollars on the part of the Asian lady owner left a bad taste. Smh..
Daniel
Probably had an unlucky day. The waiter was extraordinary unfriendly, we needed to get everything on our own(menu, tap water after asking several times without success), ordered after 20 mins, waited 60 mins while asking twice where our coffee and food was (the two people we asked really seemed to ignore us). When 2 costumers who came long after us got their stuff and the waiter did still not seem to see us, we left. The food and locaition looked good though however I was never treated that bad in a cafe, never, so I will never go back there.

My friends keep talking about this cafe and i decided to go with them for a lunch here.. The soups are great but the watermelon salad with a few prawns was a bit of a let down for me.. the watermelon taste like gas, I didn't complain as the prawn tastes awesome.. Maybe the grilling went bad that's why it taste like gas. also, not enough sits to accommodate large group of people.. Coffee is average and service is not that great.
Heidi
After a bit of run around on Anzac Day my friends and I were lucky to find that white Tati was open for brunch! After easily getting a table I ordered the breakfast burger with bacon, chorizo, spinach, egg and aioli. It was perfect, just what I needed! The egg was runny and delicious.
Kate Dougherty
Not sure where to head for brunch on Anzac Day a group of friends and I luckily stumbled across White Taro. A tiny little cafe with an extensive Asian Inspired menu and nice coffee, White Taro is certainly worth a visit. I ordered the Taro's omelette with king prawns, roasted tomatoes, enoki mushrooms and spanish onions and a side of soy and linseed toast. The omelette was jam packed with juicy prawns and mushrooms and was a total flavour bomb. My only comment is that the toast was redundant and and a bit too crunchy to eat anyway. Oh and I loved the cute coffee art too!

Fantastic hidden gem in Surry hills area! Really amazing food. Big portions and top quality ingredients. Staff were really good and friendly and happy, great atmosphere in the place. Will definitely be coming to white taro again! Loved it!
Crystal Tran
Went there for brunch today, ordered the traditional Vietnamese pho. Must say that this was the best tasting pho I've ever eaten. Only waited approximately 15 minutes for my meal. Atmosphere was super cozy and chilled, which made me sit there for hours.
Definitely coming back for the lobster waffles.

White Taro is a new addition to Sydney’s cute cafés scene. It is located on the corner of Albion and Belmore streets, just up the road to the ever so famous Reuben Hills. The corner location makes it bright giving it a lovely atmosphere. . I can easily see myself sitting there by myself working or reading for a few hours while sipping tea. In fact, they have an interesting selection of loose leaf teas – for example I had a fragrant coconut lemon slice green tea.
Thehappymedium
Holy yum!!!! A really cool place that was way too hard to decide what to order because of the many amazing options on the menu!

In the end I decided on the chicken salad and after tasting, I was sure I made the right decision. So juicy, spicy and tasty which was perfectly balanced with the crisp and cool salad!!

Being in Surry Hills, this place gets packed out for lunch and its pretty small but the staff do a good job of trying to accomodate everyone. Lucky that we came just before the rush, anyhow!

Will definitely return soon to try some other things on the menu :)
Daniel Frank
Food is a really interesting mix of classic cafe fare and Vietnamese. It's pretty good but the service (went there for lunch on Saturday) was terrible. Didn't offer us water, waited for ages for the food and most of the staff were just plain grumpy. Won't be coming back - there are so many places in Surry with better service.

(English review below)

The best Vietnamese fusion café in Syd. Both food and service are good. The only thing to improved is coffee quality.Tora's deconstructed banh mi: really a deconstructed version of traditional banh mi. Pork liver pate is substituted with western chicken liver pate. Kimchi and chutney replaced traditional pickled vegetables. The popular crispy pork belly is the main character of the dish. You can see they really trying to ‘catch the wave’.
Chook in broth: Cantonese style noodle in the great broth, remind me of home.
Halloumi salad: normal.
I have faith in this cafe and believe they will do better in the future.
Ivan Lim
Wogh, i really highly recommended this place for breakfast or lunch! Taste so good. And the food is without msg! U should try the noodle (i forgot the name) >_

It is a brave venture that sets up shop just across the road from a powerhouse cafe and roaster of the calibre of Reuben Hills. White Taro though, offers a point of differentiation that is spreading throughout cafes in the inner city, and it’s an Asian theme. The team at White Taro injects Vietnamese flavours into breakfast and lunch offerings with an impressive and imaginative approach.
Thefoodbotherer
Friday waffle date with my gal pal at a little cafe close to work. My friend got the sweet waffles which looked yum. I got the bacon waffles and whilst the waffle itself was really good, the bacon had a slight soy sauce taste and was really off putting. There was also a little knob of butter than tasted like it was mixed with the pith of a lemon or lime. Probably wouldn't come back although the coffee was ok. Waited 20 mins or more for the waffles to come out so that kinda annoyed me given we were two of three people dining in at the time
Localfoodie
Noticed this nice little cafe on the corner of albion and belmore, so we decided to give it a try. We waited patiently at the front of the cafe, waiting to be acknowledged. However we stood there for 15 mins just being ignored, we had to literally stand in front of a waits person to get attention. After we got our table, the service was so slow, ended up leaving and grabbing takeaway coffee out of desperation. With poor management and service like this, it is a disappointment. Also, the takeaway coffee was bland and sour.

When I came back to Sydney, this new cafe in Surry Hills was right on my radar. Once my friend told me she had visited and really enjoyed it, we decided to all go some time and boy was it worth the trip. We sat outdoors in the back courtyard, on a warm, sunny Sydney day, however, it didn't get too hot. The staff were all very friendly and patient, as we couldn't decide what to get! The menu looked so amazing, I wanted to eat it all! If you enjoy Asian inspired breakfast, definitely go for some of their more Vietnamese oriented dishes, otherwise they still serve up the classics, like a mean eggs benedict.
Seeaych
Fusion menu with delicious choices that were presented beautifully! The staff were very friendly and our brunch was enjoyed in a lovely, relaxing setting (despite a nearby fire on the day)! Will definitely be back!

I ordered my usual avocado based dish also known as the Smashed Vegie here (avocado, two eggs, a beetroot sauce and some leafy greens on top of soy and linseed bread). I love that you can choose what bread you want! I can't quite describe the taste but there's definitely a hint of Asian in the seasoning which makes it quite unique, perhaps a kind of vinegar or soy sauce? They don't have pumpkin for the No Carbs Brekkie this morning but are happy to replace it for my friend with haloumi. The coffee (Pablo and Rusty's) is also pleasant but above and beyond the food and drink, this place has great service and fantastic WiFi. Lots of light comes through the windows, it's a great place to catch up on some work.

White Taro is a small cafe in Surry hills on the corner of Albion and belmore st. I ate here today with my wife and we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The presentation was beautiful. I ordered the chook in broth and my wife ordered the scotch fillet baguette. I would recommended these dishes. The waitstaff were very friendly and accommodating. A few downsides, all the patrons sitting in the front could hear constant inappropriate yelling and swearing from a woman that came from the kitchen area, it sounded like the kitchen was constantly arguing- this was very unprofessional. I would not bring children here if this continues to be the case. It was very noisy with both the yelling and loud music- I think the loud music was supposed to cover up the noise from the kitchen - it was not a relaxing environment at all. Apart from this, I would come back here again.
Trevor
Walked in and was ignored for a few minutes before being led to a table. Coffee was mediocre. Food has good concepts but the execution was not there. Baked beans with brisket was one dimensional in taste, grilled chicken in the soup and salad was juicy, the poached egg that was on the mushrooms on toast was tiny as and overcooked. Wouldn't even bother coming back to try the other dishes.
Sal Smith
We waited 15 minutes to order and it then took over 40 minutes for our food to arrive (lamb wrap and a chicken baguette). Not sure why it would take over 40 minutes for 2 sandwiches, considering it wasn't even busy. It was expensive for what it was, and worse of all the food repeated on me all afternoon. NEVER AGAIN!!!
Roselina Rose
While the food here is quite tasty, it's overpriced and the serving sizes are on the small side. I paid $20 for a flat white and eggs benedict and left feeling hungry. Disappointing.
Daisy Chen
Went there specifically for their Vietnamese style breakfast. Very nice for ambience, a bit expensive for their deconstructed banh mi. I would think more suitable for lunch. But then again the items I ordered were more lunch portions and flavours
Laura Jayne
I'm sure our breakfast is going to be good, I just don't know why you're not coming to take our order. The table next to us that arrived after us has already got their food, and we haven't even had our order taken.

15 minutes later:

Okay, our order has been taken, about 5 minutes ago, and then someone just came and asked us if our order has been taken. Come on guys. Communicate.

40 minutes later:

When you go to a cafe at 10am, you expect to be well and truly done by 11am, not just getting your food. If, for whatever reason it does take this long, you kind of expect it to be better than cold pulled pork with bones in it. Actually, when the whole process takes longer than 40 minutes you expect it to be the best breakfast you've ever had. This place is super average. With so many decent looking cafes in the area I can't see any reason to choose this place.

Long time no brunch! This post isn't actually backdated unlike my previous ones (and the ones to come). Had a break during summer school today, so spontaneously went out to eat in Surry Hills at this relatively new place. It's near Reuben Hills, and you don't have to walk up the main hill, so that was a plus. Modern Vietnamese fusion food in a classic Surry Hills cafe setting and decor.

This restaurant is actually quite small. Getting a table for 5 was quite a struggle but it was totally worth it. Had the salted caramel bacon waffles. Perfect balance sweet and salty! Definitely want to come back. My friend had the Deconstructed Banh Mi and I nicked her baguette. The bread had a crispy shell but so very soft middle. I will definitely come back to try this one again!

White Taro is lovely cafe in Surry Hills featuring some very creative and interesting dishes. Their fried chicken charcoal burger is truly a sight to behold with the black bun and massive chicken filling. They also do a deconstructed Banh mi which is the Vietnamese pork roll - the pork belly is quite good but I think I do prefer just a plain old authentic Vietnamese pork roll from Cabramatta.

This is a place with enormous potential. The menu is really good and they're in a great spot. We ordered the deconstructed banh mi and the viet skewer chicken on a black brioche. The brioche was a total winner - a really great dish. The banh mi was good but uneven - the combination of elements worked together and looked amazing as a platter, however the pork belly was a little dry and personally I really really missed the coriander and chili that you normally get in banh mi. I think it needs the freshness that coriander adds. The service was friendly but a touch chaotic. Our food and drinks took a really long time so make sure you come with a friend that you have lots to say to, as there will be plenty of time to do that. All up though, a really enjoyable little cafe and one that we'll be coming back to.

BAD EXPERIENCE Wow. I just arrived in Sydney and was keen for a good feed. One of the only cafes open so went into this hip place.
I Ordered an Acai Bowl as it was a hot day, but had a few questions about what nuts were used in the granola due to an allergy. This proved very difficult for the staff and the service was poor. The acai came out frozen and the size of a spoon - not a "bowl" along with a few slices of fruit, a small bowl of yoghurt and big bowl of granola! wtf! I think the White Taro need to educate themselves on what an Acai Bowl is!!
Definitely will not be coming back! Boo

I just found a new favorite brunch place of mine! I recently went on a brunch date with Mr.P. Since he needed a private catch up with me on a regular basis ;P. It's been so hard to gather up my foodie friends to come with me here, so I thought going with Mr.P would be a great idea since we will order extra stuff anyway ..White Taro is a fusion of Vietnamese and Western style brunch and they are just located across Reuben Hills! I arrived at the place at noon and we got seated immediately. Their have outdoor dining area as well, but I always prefer inside, unless the lighting outside is better :)
2 Hungry Guys
Just as we know that the sun always rises in the east, that Friday is the best day of the week and breakfast is the most important meal of the day - we also know that there are more-than-you-can-count cafes in Surry Hills. White Taro knew exactly this when they set up shop in Surry Hills but are taking on the competition head strong.
I'm Still Hungry
I’m taroble at intros, so I’m just going to tell you to try taro.

White Taro, specifically. It’s the newest cafe to pop up in Surry Hills, serving up reinvented Vietnamese cuisine with a Western twist. Cringing already? Don’t, because you’ll throw that authenticity badge you so proudly wear out White Taro’s kitchen window before you can say “bo kho”. Don’t believe me? Read on to find out!

Another day, another newly opened Surry Hills cafe to check out. This time it's White Taro on Albion street; a lovely little spot with a menu offering cafe fare with a Vietnamese twist. . The coffee here is from one of my favourites, Pablo and Rustys. My macchiato is smooth and full-bodied.

the store hide in a small corner in surry hill, but if you walk inside, they have tables at backyard as well. Very nice when the weather is good.

Food is Vietnamese+ Australian infusion. Very good ( or I should say outstanding) grilled chicken, no matter in the noodle or burger, have to try. Have wide range of fresh juice, which is prefect for summer.

We tried two chef recommendation dishes and both were really yummy. Nice work.

Even Surry hills have so many places to have brunch, the "White Taro" you should not miss. Good location, comfortable environment and nice staff. To be honest, I'm came for the tasty 'Banh Mi'. This dish can satisfy your demand for different tastes. Crispy pork belly, pate in the small jar. Sweet chutney and spicy kimchi can decrease the oily when you eat pork belly. You can not imagine the magic of "coopertion ". Overall, I will return and bring my friends!

Very nice little café in Surry Hills!

The top 3 must try items here are:

1. Deconstructed banh mì
2. Vietnamese chicken skewer in black brioche bun
3. Chook in broth

Would like to see a dessert menu being available in future!

Vietnamese Ninja!!!This little café located in the Surry hills offers a Vietnamese influence on the menu, surprising it does pretty well and I do hope it stays this way.We order 2 dishes, the deconstructed 'Banh mi' to me this was pretty expensive since it was $19. On a platter there was porkbelly, pate in a jar, pickled items and a dinner roll. I do see the time an effort went into this dish but I cannot justify the price and the food. It wasn't great and I would not recommend this dish. The next dish was the chicken skewer burger, now this dish was great because it was packed with flavours and was interesting. The chicken skewers was tasty and flavourful but the buns were dry, seems like it was left outside for awhile.will be back to check for improvements and try out other dishes.... Until next time ... keep eating !!!!

Nice location, super comfortable and relaxing interior and friendly service. But most importantly, great food. Now granted, I only had the one dish, so I'm eager to go back and try more (especially the deconstructed banh mi) but the chicken skewer burger was a fantastic start. The chicken skewers, deliciously marinated, are grilled over lava stones. Brings out a nice charred taste and texture while still being very juicy and a little fatty. Comes with a green mango and papaya salad which has the typical Vietnamese zingy flavours and refreshes the somewhat heavy burger - it's seriously big arse. All encased within a charcoal brioche bun with a side of chips. The chips are good enough though they could probably do with more crunch and a little seasoning but the aioli it comes with is brilliant. Really strong garlic hit! Overall, fantastic. I will definitely be returning.

Came up to Sydney for a weekend, and enjoyed a lovely brunch at the newly opened White Taro. The baked eggs bo koh was simply delicious - the beef brisket with five beans went beautifully together and it was nice to have the baked baguette to soak up the stew.
Food: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Environment: 3/5
Bear_eating Nice Food
Tasty 'Banh Mi' if you r a pork belly lovers (but please don't expect a huge piece), you must try. For the Choock broth (Noodle soup) dish, it could not get me Wow! Surprisingly, the taro bun ( I guess) with salmon is taste really yum. Good atmosphere cafe 😁

Last weekend’s choice of place to brunch was a no-brainer, I have to say. This place has become the talk of the town, not only because it was recently opened, but also for the delicious food they serve, at least that’s what people on the instagram said. But, believe me, they are absolutely right on this one. White Taro definitely made it to the top 5 of my favourite brunch places.

Came by Saturday for breakfast around 930am I have been wanting to eat at this restaurant for a while as I have seen so many beautiful food photos from Instagram. Menu looked really interesting and the great thing is the owner mentioned they can make food from lunch menu also. I ordered Chook in broth and Taro's deconstructed “banh Mi". Chook in broth was very delicious; Grilled chicken was seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. Noodle and broth was flavorful, it was very well rounded and satisfying dish. My husband had Taro's deconstructed “banh Mi and he enjoyed dish although he mentioned if the fat on the pork was caramelized would have made the pork belly taste better. Coffee was okay but not exceptional.

White Taro, a newly opened cafe in Surry Hills, is joining the list of some of the famous dining spots in the neighborhood with its range of Vietnamese-fusion menu. They serve an all day menu and I can say taro is definitely not their signature dish. LOL!. Located on Albion Street (near Reuben Hills), this place is painted all white on the outside and inside is so bright with lots of natural light and simple wooden furniture. The space is quite small and can be a bit cramped when full. They also have some tables and seating outside and in the backyard if you want extra space.

White Taro is one of the newest addition to the Surry Hills cafe scene. I love that almost everything is home made - the baked goodies look heavenly! We tried the blueberry friand and its so good - moist on the inside and with a nice crunch on the top.
We also had the deconstructed bahn mi and watermelon and prawns salad.
Bahn mi is a must try!!! Crunchy pork crackling with soft and succulent meat. The home made pate was really nice too. Only downside to it was that we have to put it all together ourselves, which was a bit messy.
The watermelon salad was refreshing and the prawns had a really nice chargrilled flavour to it. The honey glazed walnuts added a nice crunch to it.
Would definitely go back to try other dishes!

White Taro is one of Surry Hill’s newest cafes bringing with it a fusion between traditional Vietnamese concepts and Australian breakfast fare. It also brings the ever reliable coffee from Pablo & Rusty’s to complement the food as well as allow you to compliment your dining companion (believe me, my sweet talk whilst caffeinated makes non-caffeinated me look like a chump…in fairness, I’m a chump under the influence of coffee too but still).

Delicious food that's beautifully presented - it's literally art on a plate. So for those who love to feed their cameras, I guarantee you will have a well-fed camera! The menu has classic items as well as original creations. Food is fresh and exciting, and you can tell there's been a lot of thought, passion and love poured into each creation - the baked goodies are made in house and there's even homemade jam!! The interior has a rustic warm and cozy feel, timber decor and huge windows for a sun filled room. There's a cute hanging garden as you walk to the outdoor courtyard area at the back.

We tried their infamous Deconstructed 'Banh Mi', a Scotch Fillet Baguette+chips, their popular Flame Grilled Chicken Salad and an epic papaya salad. Plus we couldn't resist sampling their delightful selection of in house baked cakes and pastries (including flourless & gluten free options)! I had an iced berry tea which was very refreshing. The Banh Mi is the most beautiful Vietnamese pork roll I have ever seen - no wonder it's a best seller! Crispy pork skin & juicy meat, housemade chutney, pate, kumquat butter and kimchi...pure deliciousness. I found it fun putting it together myself and loved the hands on experience. Salads were also amazing both in taste and looks. I loved that they didn't use oil in the dressing and it tasted so refreshing and light. Perfect as the weather gets warmer. We left with full bellies and very satisfied!

For coffee lovers, White Taro serves Pablo&Rusty's coffee and opens 7am-4pm Tue-Sun. Whether it's for that pre-work coffee dose or a weekend chill session with friends, it's definitely worth checking out! Pricing is very reasonable, the atmosphere is great and their staff is super friendly. They plan to open for dinner sometime in the near future too, and I have no doubts the dinner menu will be epic! I can't wait to go back and slowly make my way through their whole menu (I have my eye set on their waffles next)! Highly recommend!! Yum yum yum!!
