Sir And Mlady Dine Out

In the bustling hub known as Thainatown sits the rustic Thanon Khao San. There certainly is no shortage of Thai places in the area and most have been here for a while. Thanon Khao San has a casual almost street market feel to it. Cages hang from the ceiling and the rough timber walls really transport you to another world.
This is the best Thai food in sydney cbd i have ever tried!im a Thai food lover and love spicy food, Khaosan Thanon nails it! the best dishes are toom saap, pad Thai, spicy beef salad... good ambience for casual dining, food is fast, friendly waiter and waitress. Highly recommended if when u starving for Thai food
The place has a snack bar upfront and live music! Awesome! Before dinner got served we bought egg custard cubes which is very delicious!
The pad thai with chicken is small in portion and quite expensive I reckon. Flavor is good though! There noodle is darker than usual.
Papaya salad with salted egg is tangy and refreshing. Always order it in thai restaurants! The peanuts work well in there.
Red duck curry came in a whole coconut with the removed lid and extra curry in a bowl. The curry is very fruity with pineapple a d lychee. Duck is tender and juicy! There is a lot of it too! Too back Xihuahua 🐶 splashed herself with the sauce when trying to peel the coconut flesh off the shell. The flesh is so delicious soaked in curry sauce.
Overall delicious meal. The price is too high though. Thankfully we got a deal online which brought the bill more in-line with the average.
Really enjoyed the food here that we came back twice during our trip to Sydney! Everything was packed full of flavours. We tried the red curry, green curry, pad see ew, papaya salad and really enjoyed them! The dessert at the front of the store is really yummy! We recommend the taro ones!
Friendly staff. Food was amazing!!!!! Tho a bit crowded but very Thai street market style! Definitely will visit again and again try all dishes!!!!!
Super delish thai food. Best street food in Sydney! Although we just had a lunch special (rice with 2 choice) because we are abit full, you won’t regret to visit this restaurant
Love this place, lots of my favourite dessert you can name of - from durian sticky rice, mango, sticky rice, cassava, waffle, asian cupcakes, water chestnut with coconut, layer cake and many more
Sometime they have live band too if you eat inside.
Should try
1 Red Curry - Seafood 3/5
Quite fresh and light dish, and the red curry soup base is really yummy! But different from in imagination, this one is not spicy at all.
2. Stir fried Heath shiitake mushroom 🍄 5/5
What’s my dish!!!! Super healthy! Don’t need to be worried about the weight issue! All the ingredients are quite fresh and the shiitake mushroom are juicy~~~
3. Desert
The durian sticky rice 3.5/5 ~~~ hahaha instead of mongo, it’s durian! And my bestie she is a huge fan of durian!!! Love it! But the rice is not that sticky hhhh, might need improvement
Quite lovely small restaurants

Dinner always great here! My fav roti with milk always good here. The tum Saab the best for cold and rainy day! Chili jam seafood stir fry also a must try item! Don’t forget to order the Thai milk tea and also their coconut drink! Love the ambience and the services :). The food always amazing
Great place with nice ambiance, live music & friendly staff that alter the menu as per your requirements.
Really tasty food and deserts.
Quick and efficient service.
The food is awesome. There are plenty of table in the restaurant. They have a acoustic live music at night. They also sell the traditional street food as well but it needs to be paid in advance and you can bring it inside the restaurant if you have a table (meaning you buy anything from the restaurant and eat in) otherwise it’s just like “grab and go” snack.

A big, warm and bloody bowl of Thai boat noodles to start the moody morning 🍜😋. Little did I know, the broth is actually made of either cow’s blood or pork’s blood😱🐖🐄💉 Don’t worry! it doesn’t have a bloody taste🙅🏽. I find it quite rewarding if u ask me♨️
.
Was planned to go to Boon cafe, but the authentic Thai desserts they sell at the stand in front managed to catch my attention into this place🍡. I love their pandan and Taro pancakes, super nice! 🍃Thai milk tea puffy was average tho (All $5) A variety of interesting dessert I would love to try them all. Sadly, the boat noodle ($10.90) was a bit hit-and-miss, the flavour wasn’t strong enough. When will I get to taste the authentic “Kuaitiao Ruea” in Thailand😟❓
.
Overall I might come back for the dessert, not sure about their mains.
A little Thai Restaurant in the City on Pitt St.
We passed by on the Street and discover the restaurant because we got attracted by variant of cake and sweet on the main door. This restaurant inside is quite squishy, we have a main dishes all together. We surprised the food is so good and the services is okay not very efficient in comparison. Over all is good. I would give 4 star if the service Can pick up a little bit more.
Huge selection of Thai food, way more range than your average Thai restaurant- great for those looking for more authentic Thai food! Also great live music from Thai musos. Had the Thai iced tea and pad kee mao, and roti with condensed milk, all spot on. The boys had chicken wings and jugs of beer- the wings were a little expensive at $10 for a smallish plate, so might go for the satay next time instead. As I said there are plenty of more interesting dishes like pickled crab salad and chicken offal stir fry, but we were conservative tonight!
Also has an amazing stall at the front selling various Thai desserts, so delicious! Highly recommend grabbing a pack for $5 on your way out.
Definitely a new favourite!
Been here once for dinner and they serve good Thai food but the highlight for me is always the takeaway Thai sweets for sale at the front of the restaurant. I'd bought numerous items while walking past. I've noticed they expanded the range and area recently (the rickshaw is gone) with even more varieties. This time round we bought the mung bean sweet shaped like piglets, black sesame sweet and fried pandan. All tasted good!
Really liked coming here- tasty, quality thai food at a very reasonable price with live music and a great vibe! There seemed to be a lot of thai people eating at the restaurant which is always a great indicator as to how authentic/good the foodis.
We ordered the pork satay which was delicious, the yellow fish curry with roti, and the khao san fried rice. All dishes came out very quickly.
This place is very near to Townhall station.
Very small cozy place to sit and have an authentic Thai food.
Serving time is very less. Though you need to wait a bit if you are going on weekend.
This place give you feel of authentic Thai food.
Food was delicious . We have tried green curry with sticky rice and pad Thai noodles. Both were good.
Live band added to our experience 🙂
Both my friend and I ordered noodles and we both enjoyed them. From memory they have lunch deals so it wasn't too pricey either. Only thing was the service which was a bit off at times. We wanted dessert and asked what they have on offer, and one of the staff told us they don't have any desserts we can order. Next minute, we see the table next to us receive a lovely dessert dish... If there was a certain way to order this, at least they could let us know since we didn't see any on the menu and had no idea on going about it. 😑
Seen my Sydney fellow foodies instagram about this place, honestly i came here because i was interested with snack stall in front of this resto. But cause i arrived here too early so those thai snacks hadnt ready yet. So i help out myself with a lunch. I was ordered chicken pad thai ($11.50 - lunch price) and fish cake ($8). Chiken pad thai was quite good, it was so authentic, if you ever eat pad thai on its country you may get what i mean. Cause some resto in Wollongong isnt authentic anyway, they already modified the recipe into local taste so it's very dissapointing. You can request extra spicy and it literally spicy but i like it, thats Asian food should be like. Will come back again next time, stil curious about Thai snack stall.
this is one of my favourite thai restaurant in this sydney china town area. been back few times and non of the visit has disappointed me. the price is reasonable and the food is very delicious and authentic. the decoration of the restaurant also very nicely thought of, which it was basically done around the famous thailand iconic tuk tuk, vehicle plate and the amazing dessert stall. oh, i miss thailand.
Have tried their pineapple fried rice, pad kra pao with pork belly, radna mee krob and yum woon sen... they are all impeccable.
i certainly want to come back to this restaurant if i ever come to sydney again and i will miss this restaurant whenever i crave for thai food.
If you a looking for a restaurant that is visually appealing this is the place! A tuk tuk rests out the front from where they sell Thai style desserts. The restaurant is designed to look like one in the heart of Thailand and they have done so extremely well. The food was great though I think the atmosphere helped with making it better. The service was okay when my family and I went though I believe this was due to the time and how busy they were. Despite this it is most definitely worth a visit when in Sydney.
Goooooooooooooood foooooooooooooood Goooooooooooooood foooooooooooooood Goooooooooooooood foooooooooooooood Goooooooooooooood foooooooooooooood Goooooooooooooood foooooooooooooood
And sticky rice and mango
Always reliable. I've been away for 2 years and checked out this place when I returned. It's still as great as I remember. You can play safe and stick to pad thai, but the drawcard is Northern Thai food. Pick any of the chef's specials or check out the blackboard on the wall. You won't be disappointed. I tried the special rice with fermented Northern sausages. Wow, what a surprise. Mildly spicy with heaps of smoky fried rice. The rice was dotted with superfresh onions, chilis & cherry tomatoes. When a chef takes care to include the freshest vegetables, you know there's attention to detail. This dish reminded me of a visit to Chiang Mai - it was authentic & awesome. I'm surprised that other reviewers have complained about service here. I found the staff courteous & helpful, but I was here for a quiet Saturday lunch. It's not ideal for big dinner groups, as the tables are small and service is brisk. Best to go here for lunch while shopping or sightseeing.
Amazing! Absolutely blown away by the standard of the food and service for the price. We had masaman curry, satay chicken skewers and pad Thai and a couple of drinks, and everything about the meal was outstanding. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Sydney.
Have walked past this Thai restaurant many a time and stopped by today on a whim to buy dessert. It was so difficult to decide from all the delicacies displayed in the street cart! Sticky mango rice, Thai puddings, coconut and pandan jelly, plus many other interesting things I didn't recognise. The layered green coconut jelly I ended up getting is subtly sweet and salty.
You might be mistaken that you are actually in Thailand when you walk in to Thanon Khaosan! This gem of a place has it all - good food and fiery chilli flakes! Staff are nice. But the star of the show is the life sized Tuk-Tuk (no idea how it got there)! Located in Chinatown where you are spoilt for choice you will definitely want to come here a second time.
Nice Thai restaurant serving authentic dishes that are fresh and wholesome. The customer service is good and and prices are reasonable here. Located on Pitt street .. parking should be easy in the evenings. I highly recommend the duck curry and the desserts.
Planned to go to boon cafe but found this gem on the way and ate there instead. Really flavoursome and tasty food with an incredible dessert stand out the front with all weird and wonderful cakes/treats. Like most places in Sydney, there were too many staff and they weren't super friendly but helpful enough. Meals came out quick and all for a very reasonable price!
Thai desserts. How I love them. Asian desserts often seem to confuse Westerners as whatever sweetness involved is quite subtle. They might even have a savoury hint to them. On numerous business trips to Bangkok, I discovered different Thai desserts, at times from food stalls on the streets or in shopping malls, or set out as conference snacks.
Delicious Thai food with massive varieties of light desserts. One of the rare Thai restaurant offer true spicy food. Nice staff though sometimes it takes a bit long to get attention.
No coconut rice.
My friend loves this place, I love my friend (in a super straight way), so I think this restaurant and its food are intertwined for the affection I have for my friend.
Yes, you are reading a food review.
I'm surprised this place is not scoring closer to a 4, so I decided to remember all the times I've been here and what I felt about the food I shoved in my mouth. The truth is, I enjoyed the company more than the place.
I have tried the pad see ew, pad thai, their pork belly dish (I forget the name, but its crunchy, quite good), their tom yum and their green curry. I can take chilli, but here I always ask them to do it mild, but I get "wild" instead (hehe see what I did there?). If you can't take spicy then... well you're probably not able to eat most of the menu.
I agree with other reviewers that food here is average, yes its nothing overly exciting but it is nice, seating space is small, portions are on the smaller end for my taste, and prices are average. Certainly its an option if you're keen for Thai and don't want to queue somewhere like Home.
I love it
Pad thai in here you can request to make it spicy for you that love spicy. They also have several menu for dessert, it's so good. But its a little bit expensive. So many food that i want to try, i should prepare empty stomach when i came here.
I wish i had more stomachs to properly enjoy this place. Perfectly fitted out with a tuk tuk in the entrance and street food for sale in the shopfront, it feels like you're in Thailand.
The menu is insanely extensive, there's something for everyone. I had the Ba Mee Moo Dang which was noodles with wontons and bbq pork. The wontons felt undercooked but the other elements were to die for.
The watermelon juice was a bit too syrupy and sweet, but otherwise very refreshing and nice.
An authentic Thai restaurant, but it's more the desserts they sell at the front I go for. It looks a bit like a Bangkok street cafe - even has a loud coloured tuk tuk parked by the front door - and a huge table of cakes made from taro, coconut, sticky rice, custard, pumpkin and an array of other Thai ingredients. I've had a good fish yellow curry there served with rice and roti. Although it was very soupy and I had to get another plate to decant the rice and curry to. I had it with crispy quail egg wontons in sweet chilli sauce. Both dishes really tasty. I drank a refreshing and sweet rambutan (bit like a lychee) ice blend shake (worth trying). The prices too are very reasonable and the interior again reminiscent of Bangkok Cafes with plenty of wood and fans, decorated with the types of signs that appeal to those with wanderlust. But, again, it's that tray of sweets at the front, from the soybean moulded mini vegetables to the shredded taro fritters and eye-popping coloured coconut cakes, that really grab your attention. They all cost $2-6. Hardly anything for a genuine sense of Thai street food.
Great ambience and decor. Great food. The Tom Yum soup may just be the best soup i have ever had, really really worth getting for a starter. I will definitely be coming back to this place. Loved it.
Went here on a random Friday night with my girlfriend, food is good, and the atmosphere is pretty relax especially when the mini concert rocks on. You can find a jar of beer for $10 here so if u r looking for great Thai food and cheap beers in a relax atmosphere with ur mate make sure you don't miss this place.
It's all about the desserts. I've only had 1 meal here which was so-so, but the convenience & abundance of the streetside dessert display is a winner. That's saying something, because there are competitive Thai desserts for sale all around this block to Chat Thai. I love to walk by and enjoy them all with my eyes - literally, eye candy - before buying just one from here to eat!
I've had nearly every dessert they have based on coconut, sago, or pandan - just these have heaps of variety. Then there's egg custards, pumpkin-based, egg-based, in slices, bowls, little boxes, wrapped in leaves.... recently they've increased the range to include sticky rice with mango & rice flour dumplings & more colourful unrecognisable things.
Someone better than me can take a photo.
A single takeaway slice can be as little as $2, which is great if you're on a budget and/or low diet-dessert allowance. Perfect for me since I love Asian sweets but don't want to sit and pay $10 for some gigantic quantity I can never finish.
I am insatiably curious when it comes to food, and when I saw the tantalising sweet display at the front of this restaurant, I just couldn't walk by. I ended up buying some yummy sticky rice with mango which has to be my all time favourite thai dessert. I love the combination of sweet mango, sticky rice and ever so slightly salty coconut cream.
The ambiance of this restaurant is very unique. There is this little bus out at the front of the shop. It is pretty cute. The decoration definitely feels like an authentic Thai restaurant. I had the coconut curry and a whole fish. Overall, this little place is a must if you want to bring your boyfriend or girlfriend out for a date!
Thanon Kaosan was great! I had the pad Thai with tofu here. I like to level my Thai restaurants with this dish. It was tasty, with delicious crispy soft tofu triangles as well as a good helping of veggies including grilled capsicum that was sweet and tender.
The cramped tables were fun - my dining partner and I listened to two entertaining conversations during our meal.
The service is laidback but friendly, typical of the restaurants in the area. I bought a dessert on the way out and really enjoyed it. Next time I want to try the Massaman curry with roti. The curries looked delicious.
Brilliantly Thai. Had a great experience for a Sunday lunch. Food was great, definitely going to visit again :)
Thanon Khaosan is a lively little restaurant in Pitt Street. We loved the vibrant atmosphere in the restaurant. It was busy and some of the tables were a bit cramped, which meant the feeling was more street food cafe rather than formal restaurant. The decor was great too – bare brick walls, bird cage like lampshades and a tuk-tuk – our table was next to the tuk-tuk and I did very well to not sit in it! The menu is comprehensive, with a good selection of traditional street food, stir fried dishes, curries, salads and noodles.
...whatever their marketing strategy may be, it certainly works for me. However, the most crucial part of course, is the food. There is an overwhelming number of Thai eateries in the CBD alone and I've tried many places that have drowned their pad thais in ketchup. So far, Chat Thai in Haymarket and Thai Curry at West Ryde wins my vote. I wonder if this place will live up to the expectations.. This was just one side of the table.

The chilli will tingle your lips, numb your tongue and make you sit up straight on your stool, but the sweetness of the sauce, the fragrance of basil and the contrast between crunchy crackling and fat-ribboned meat will make the pain gloriously worth it. If all else fails, a crushed ice fruit blend, mixed with watermelon, pineapple or lychee and mint, will sooth the pain and quench your thirst.
...we were served soup, given a bottle of white wine, presented with a sweet & sour whole fish and (yes, there is more) a seafood platter with – prawns, fish, calamari, mussels and crab then ended with coconut tapioca plus a pumpkin cake …. holy value!
Arriving at the restaurant you can’t help but trip over the tuk tuk parked in the doorway on one side of the entrance and on the other side, a hawker stand offering sticky little street food snacks beckoning you with their sweetness
Fantastic. If you ever find yourself in Haymarket, close to the World Square and hungry for some Thai cuisine, do not miss Thanon Khao San. There are scores of great places in the area, but this restaurant has a mix of authentic atmosphere, reasonable prices and choices to satisfy almost anyone.
The interior is definitely making the visit worthwhile on its own. If you enjoy vintage looks of aged wood and dimmed, warm environments – Thanon Khao San will deliver on your expectations. We should mention the hawker in the front selling Thai dessert, and the Tuktuk park inside the restaurant. We came on a Sunday evening, so a reservation would have been preferred. While we did not have one, we got a seat in 10 minutes or so. The staff members were very busy, but courteous. That's was understandable - the place was packed after all.
All food was for sharing. We quite enjoyed the social experience of that, especially since we had a friend joining us. Our choices were Roasted duck with red curry served in whole coconut, Pad Thai King Prawn and Som Tum Salad, along with a jug of Singha beer.
While the food was exotic I felt that someone less adventurous would have been comfortable eating this fare as it was very approachable.
Definitely a worthwhile place to visit if you are around. Both for lunch and dinner.
We had a Groupon voucher and made a reservation on a Saturday night no problem. The service was quick & efficient and so was the food. The food was amazing. The fish that was supplied with the seafood platter was the definite stand out... We also orders an entree to try and the prawn cakes came in a close second... Definitely be back!
Best Thai food I have ever had. This is the best Thai foods I have ever had. It is a small venue with Amazing interior, A tuk-tuk & hawker carts selling Thai sweets at the front, so if you’re looking for a romantic or quiet setting , this isn't the place for you. If you are looking for awesome food at good prices with a cool atmosphere then this is exactly what Thanon Khao San delivers.
Consistently great for dine in or takeaway. My favourites are the Duck curry in the whole coconut and massaman.curry with Roti.
Great place and food, highly recommend.
WONDERFUL. This place was awesome. The atmosphere is loud and alive, and the food was out of this world! Then to top it off the prices are so reasonable especially for Sydney. If you like Thai food and you're in Sydney then go to this place!
Amazing food!! really cheap as well and nice restaurant. service wasnt perfect but the restaurant was full and they were all very busy
Excellent non-traditional Thai!. This place specialises in all the real Thai dishes that are missing from your standard neighbourhood Thai restaurant; the crying tiger was melt-in-the-mouth, the som tum perfectly flavoured, and the daily khanom selection is Sydney's best. Plus funky atmosphere and great service to boot!
Decent food for Groupon Voucher. I redeemed a Groupon voucher for 2 for the three course meal ($39). The menu given to us was not the standard menu but a 'special' Groupon menu. The terms and conditions on the Groupon voucher was not clear in this regard, as it said any entree/main/dessert from the menu. I felt deceived and this was not a good start to the night. Desserts were not listed on this Groupon menu and I was left wondering whether we would even have dessert at all! The waitress who introduced us to the menu was quite difficult to understand and when I asked about dessert, she gave me no solid answer other than 'yes'.
The service was subpar. Considering the restaurant was packed with people, it was not a surprise. The decor was very interesting with hilarious signs that catch your eye but we're here for the food not the view.
I must say, the food was very filling and portions were generous. For entrees, we ordered fried wontons with pork - it said 3 on the menu and we expected 3 fried wontons, but we received a total of 9 wontons on skewers! We also ordered satay chicken and this came with a good serving of peanut sauce and some toast.
For mains, we ordered Pad See Ew and the chef's special of some Fish with papaya salad. The Pad See Ew was very salty and not the best I've tasted. The amount of chicken added was redeeming but not enough to save the dish.
The Fish was larger than I had expected and tasted plain but great when dipped in the sweet sauce provided. The papaya salad (which was more like a papaya and carrot salad) was quite hot but delicious. I was very happy with the Fish dish.
Finally, the moment of truth. Would there be dessert or not? And thank goodness there was, but we had no choice in it. By this time I had seen the menu on a chalkboard on the wall listing desserts that were $7.90. But we didn't get anything from there. We watched the waitress take 2 puddings that they were selling at the front of the store (these were selling for $2-$3 each!!!). Better than nothing, I guess.
Good amount of food for $39. I would rather order a main each and spend ~$20 than eat that much food. We didn't quite finish everything. And I still feel cheated on dessert.
Food was delicious and decor interesting. Glad we weren't in a rush as service very slow.
Excellent Thai restaurant.
Very authentic, staff was friendly, food was so tasty. Great price and they got a little dessert bar outside too if you want to bring desserts home. I would love to get some mango sticky rice but I was too full. Maybe next time. Definitely I will come back again.
Enjoyed the good food here especially the pineapple fried rice. Was able to try a variety of dishes with more people.
The live band was amazing. Didn't understand a thing they're were singing but it was still lovely and enjoyable. Music is truly an international language. Can I say the waitresses are very cute too :)
We ordered pad thai, prawn creamy tom yum, fish fillets, pork and rice, as well as coconut ice cream for dessert. All of us had different flavour ice blends.
The food was all delicious, especially the tom yum soup, although just 8 prawns and some mushrooms in it was kinda sad, expected more veggies. The food was all very authentic and tasty.
I tried the yakult blend, it was weird, wish they mentioned theres jelly blended in.
The coconut ice cream was good, reminded me of bkk, but crazy that its $8 for two scoops here 😭
Planning to return again! Service could be better tho.
The crispy pork was meh, the soups are where its at! So delicious and flavourful but not too overpowering. Service is also fantastic!
The best Red Duck curry with young coconut (make sure you eat with coconut because it’s good combination). Pad Thai was good as well as Som Tum. Staff were friendly and approachable.
One of the most authentic thai restaurant in Sydney. Service was lacking a bit but otherwise the food is good.
🌈 tri-colored sticky rice

📝: Another post today for another Thai spot in Sydney! Been here years ago for a late night dessert fix and back here again this trip for a post-dinner indulgence.
❤️: Have you guys had sweet sticky rice before? In Thailand, we usually infuse it with all kinds of ingredients for different aromas and colors—such as butterfly pea for blue, pandan leaves for green and so on. Got the 🌈🍚 Tri-Colored Sticky Rice with 🥥 kaya custard, 🐟 sweet dried fish and 🦐 dried shrimp topping. Brings back such nostalgic tastes!
