Love the old pubs in the Surry Hills area. I cant stop but think all the history that has walked through the doors of these classic hotels. From men only bars to the gangsters and petty thieves etc.
We stopped for an afternoon bevvy and was feeling like some good sides to accompany our drinks.
Daughter had an award winning IPA and I had a Kiwifruit based beer. Both excellent and very refreshing.
We ordered onion rings and Chicken wings with the Jack Daniels sauce (or was it a bourbon sauce, memory not good).
I've had some very average onion rings before, but these were excellent. Batter was light and crunchy and not over powering the delicate flavour of the onions. It didn't say what the accompanying sauce was but it complimented nicely. A lively tangy flavour.
The chicken wings....OMG!
The wings were coated in a light crunchy batter with a beautiful sweet drizzle of the sauce. We devoured these babies without talking!!
Definitely want to come back on Thursday night for the chicken wing special. 1 kilo chicken wings for $15 or 2 kilo for $22.
Staff were smiling and super helpful.
Also dont forget the pool table and pinball machines in the side room.
If the main bar is too noisy there are quieter areas to sit.
Will definitely be back!!
Like the venerable Clock Hotel a few blocks away, and even the White Horse (now, the Horse), even closer, the Forresters has stood the test of time. I’m sure it’s been through management changes over the years. Gone is the Jamaican restaurant, Queenies, that I always meant to get back to (it seemed to have stopped around September 2017, though their Facebook page is still up). What I remember (accurately?) is that the Forresters was the place that started the $5 steak craze. A perfectly good piece of meat, served up with a sauce, and a crowd of people (but not too bad) eating meat. I always thought it was an interesting business model, as other pubs copied the idea, and then rules were put on (that you had to order drinks along with it) and then the prices went up ($6, $8, $10?) and then the deal disappeared.
Amazing venue, service is A grade, food is ALWAYS on point and ALWAYS hits the spot. I lost count how many times I've gone with a group of friends here and it's never disappointed. Not once. It's cheap, fun, drinks are always flowing and always a good time! Thanks for being my fav local! Oh! And just one thing... PLEASE for the love of god bring back *if you haven't already* your chips with meat gravy... it's literal gold. I recommend this place to literally everyone that's in the area X
Nice pub located at the corner of Foveaux St & Riley St. Decent selection of beers, and great deals during the week (the Monday $5 steak is unbeatable).
The atmoshere is very easy going and chilled. I was there on Monday for the 5 dollars steak and I I was happily surprised by the good quality of the meat; was juicy and tasty. 1 stake is enough (but if you are very hungry better order 2).
Great old pub and proper pub grub menu. Great service. Very down to earth. Huge venue so it's great for parties as they allow you to reserve a large area with a minimum bar spend which is them refunded.
Good sized hipster bar in Surry Hills selling beers, cocktails and mexican / carribean style
food. I got a rocket salad, with chickpeas, cheese and chicken spicy tacos. Friends got the bean nachos. They have heaps of burgers, pizza, and fried snacks! Also had some aperol spritzers. Service was pretty quick. It is a young pub so the food comes out in plastic or paper containers. Works for the environment.
I have been coming here for over a decade it has gone through a few changes but they miraculously have held on to the famous $5 steak. I think they still have it, it's been a year since I ordered it. Pizzas, burgers, and sandwhiches are all decent and they usually have a good lunch deal.

If your up for a pub feed that really his home then this is your place.
For a very busy establishment they do well to service the clientele in a very efficient manner.
Food is great and cooked upon request with reasonable pricing
Great unpretentious pub in Surry Hills. Love the laid back vibe and nature of this place. Staff are friendly and service is efficient. Sports games are always playing without the macho crowd and food is always good.would recommend if you're in the area!
Was a good evening! Friendly staff, good food! There was not much seating available even though it was a quiet night! Pork to share was epic! Love it! One complaint , smokers outside stank and was definitely not "4 meters" away
Noodlies, Sydney food blog went along for a gander, and I liked it. Really liked it (no irony intended). And what the hell is that drink/food above?! More on that later…. It’s noon on Sunday and the Surry Hills is still asleep. The streets are eerily empty; strolling up Foveaux street from Central and it’s like a scene from the Walking Dead. As I approach Riley Street, there’s a reassuring hum of quiet chatter – signs of humanity, bearded and in thongs (lots of thongs abound).
I've been here two or three times now, really chilled feel to the pub, nice cheap meals and drinks. Cool place up from central station to catch up with a few friends over then weekend. Staff seem friendly and nice.

Always crowded on a saturday night and so I went on Sunday evening and when we entered the place, no one greeted us, we manage to seated ourselves and asked for the menu. I know that I want to get from the website, the BBQ on PIT!!
Of course it would be packed on a Wednesday night in Surry Hills. It is always packed. Though I can see why, when Forresters offer $10 pizzas and a list of discounted cocktails and drinks. An overdue catchup was needed with Tripod, and what better way to talk about life then over burgers and beer. With a few tables booked out and most of the dining near the bar taken, we share a long table near the back bar with couple. The atmosphere was buzzing with hump day relief, as we also toasted to our mid-week celebrations. Bulmer Pear Cider $7, Chicky Babe? $10, Pure Blonde $7 Fish Taco $5.50 I was very for the influx of Mexican food trend in Sydney. From El Loco down the road to food trucks, fancy smancy tacos were popping up everywhere. The only taco Forresters serve is this fish one as a starter, and I guess that's all they need. Served with mojo verde (Spanish green sauce), guac, corn salsa, jicama slaw and a lovely crispy thin

The rotisserie is another nice touch: each day a different type of meat is served up with Italian slaw and potatoes and it really feels like a home-cooked meal. Could it be that this public house is living up to its origins? A home away from home?
The Forresters Corner Foveaux and Riley Streets Surry Hills Sydney NSW 2010 Ph : (02) 9212 3035 Lemon tart milkshake. These three words, tweeted, were what convinced me that I needed to visit The Forresters. Despite having visited numerous pubs in Surry Hills over the years, for some reason Forresters had never been one of them. What I didn't realise was that this milkshake was, on the date of my visit, less than a week old, part of a new menu and new ownership. The pub is carved out into several sections. We sat in the covered courtyard next to the entry area. There is a larger area behind the courtyard, and still more room on an upper level. Ordering consists of going up to the bar, paying for your food and drinks, and taking your number. As well as a weekday $10 menu, there is a much longer menu that can be ordered from at all times, covering a daily rotisserie (whose meat ends up in the Cuban sandwich of the day), snacks, salads, pizza, pasta, mains (short, but covering everything
There’s also a dining section with cheap, pub food. One thing they should remove however, is the screens all over the pub.

We've eaten the BBQ pork from the pit twice now, unable to resist the DIY carnage of pulled pork, chips and salad. It's the kind of dish that gets heads swivelling whenever it's delivered to a table.

After breathing life into The Norfolk , Abercrombie , Flinders and Carrington , inner city pub messiahs James Miller and Jaime Wirth have turned their talents to The Forresters . They've given us a homely red-sauce diner with a smidgen of Nevada upstairs, where you sit and sup from plaid banquettes under cartwheel lights by a river-rock feature wall. The pub magnates' success has attracted a gun floor team, with Tomislav , Forbes & Burton & Gazebo defectors whizzing by. The menu here is more modern trattoria than dude food, but I still advocate that you pick a peck of Pepper Poppers ($12) for a juicy moment of hand-to-mouth. Punctuate 'em with cute-as-a-button Baked Clams ($16) washed down with Four Gears in Reverse ($16) , a smooth pineapple and smoky tequila based cocktail that made me regret not ordering a Jug ($30) . Daily rotating Rotisserie ($25/head) delivers (on Tuesdays) a whole lot of charcoal chook for your spend, dished up with stellar spuds and finely shaved 'slaw. I
The ground floor of The Forresters hasn't altered its easy-going, something-for-everyone approach, including the excellent value $10 lunches.
Great atmosphere, great food & a vast drink selection but that bloke behind the bar who always has his arms crossed, really needs to lighten up
This is a pretty neat pub. I came here for a work party and we had one of the function rooms where we had our own personal bar and karaoke. Couldn't eat much of the food because I'm a vegetarian but the buffalo cauliflower was amazing! I was worried at some point I was eating chicken but it was delicious . Came back another time for dinner with my boyfriend, on a Monday night this place is very busy and you can be waiting quite a while for food but in the end, the cauliflower was worth it. Not too loud either so pretty good place to put on your radar if you wanna go drinking.
Soooo goood. Awesome food, awesome staff and awesome prices. BEST pub feed in sydney
Loved it. Went on a Sunday afternoon. This place has a great vibe. We had a couple of drinks, which were reasonably priced. Barmaids were a little slow, but maybe they're new. The pork sliders were yum! My partner thought they were a little dry, but I thought they were just right. The cauliflower with blue cheese sauce was also a winner. Still had some crunch to it - which made it all the better. Will come back next time we visi Syndey for sure!
Great atmosphere. Another addition to the Jamie Doom enterprises, turned a whole in a wall forgotten pub into something trendy with their weird font & clip art menus.
Great cocktail menu & USA BBQ style menu leaving a few of their Italian items on the menu. Ordered the sunday BBQ mix which was 2 wings, lots of chips & a pork neck slab. Slightly overpriced for what they're serving, reminds me a little of The Dip & Abercrombie menus. Great fried cauliflower & cheese but just as it sounds - lots of fried stuff!
Great (hipster) staff that are willing to help with the menu.
Came here on a Tuesday night - it was packed out due to the trivia. I'm thinking the next time we come we'll either book a table to join in or avoid Tuesdays. The place looks really good since being done up, much warmer vibe - the last time we were here it was all silver and black. The husband and I ordered the BBQ pork platter to share - pork was just perfect and tender, chips were nice and crispy and the buns! Was a bit like "pfft" when I read the menu and the buns were written up to be something quite special but they actually were really tasty buns - crunchy yet soft and really nicely buttered. The Korean slaw that came with it was nothing special - just slightly spiced coleslaw. We were expecting something along the lines of Kim chi but it did go well with the rest of the food when put in the buns. Keen to try the rest of the menu.
Our first time back since the renovations. I am unsure if the changes have made the place better, or it was just designed to seat more people. That said, Forresters is still a cool place. Lots of atmosphere and a good selection of food and drinks. Also family friendly.
Really lovely atmosphere, excellent service and the food while simple is quite deceptively sophiscated
Forrest not Dump. I approached the Forresters with trepidation, fearing it would be an establishment that only provided good service to men sporting fashionable facial hair. I shouldn’t have worried, this is a pleasant pub. The pineapple and prosciutto pizza had a nice thin crust but as appears to be the fashion it wasn’t particularly generous with ingredients leaving you wondering why you had forked over $22. However, this slight letdown was mostly rectified with the delicious crumbed cauliflower, a model for all vegetable work.
I know this place has always been known for the $5 steak but since it's changed owners it's much more. The premises has been renovated and has a nice open split level area at the side of the pub. The place has a good atmosphere with a diverse mix of patrons. They have food specials every day of the week, Monday being the $5 steak and I went of a Tuesday which was $10 pasta. I don't know if I was just lucky and chose the best one but the Gnocchi Duck Ragu was wonderful. I was expecting a lot of average gnocchi when I was served with soft light gnocchi and a large quantity of duck Ragu. The duck was nicely shredded in the tomato based sauce.
I have also tried the Reuben here which was good but just can't go past the duck.
Steak sandwich is a killer!. New menu since I last ate here. Had the steak sandwich - fantastic. Cool pub with a great beergarden and nice staff. Nice little local pub.
$5 Steak?. The $5 steak was good, considering that it was extra for sauce, extra for salad and extra for the mandatory drink. Also tried the chicken, which was better than the steak. For the price, a very good pub meal and well worth trying. Plenty of seating, reasonably prompt bar service and better value than many other venues offering comparative meals in the area.
Can't complain wit a steak, mushroom sauce, mash, vegatables and a beer with change from a twelver. Only issue was my med rare was more like on the slightly overdone side of medium. Cheap as chips and reasonable.
