Nice little bar with cheap burgers. Well, cheap for a bar and they did cook the hell out of the thin beef patty but the burger came together well and was a reasonable size.
Cool local bar that is deceptively large. Good drinks, good Erko vibes. Pavement seats are great viewing spots for the colourful parade of inner westside life.
Home-made style burger that hit-the-spot. So tasty, yet seemed so healthy. Who knew such thing existed!? Everything else about this place seemed cool, casual and inviting; The perfect place to hang for a cheeky bite & beer on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

I was meeting up with a mate in Erskineville and this place was recommended for their beer and cocktail selection. Hive Bar is very hipsterish with a couple of small tables and bench seating overlooking the streetscape. The beer selection was top notch and the cocktails delicious - grab their Aussie style negroni or any of the pale ales that they have on tap. The meals were ok for barbites. We grabbed a burger and the pizza. They were fairly standard but sometimes that is what you are after with a good drink and some awesome conversation. Give this place a look if you are in the area and after a bite and a brew.
Consistently great service and a nice choice of craft beers. Grab a few tapas, and be sure to include the olives, they are amazolives!!!!!!!
This place is great. The menu has so much to offer and it's reasonably priced. The vegan double cheeseburger with edamame patty is one of the best burgers I've had. The fries are delicious and the pickled fries are great too. Loving all the vegan options. Great atmosphere too
Love this little bar in Erko. Really great vibe and cheap bar snacks that are delicious. Ordered the fried pickles which were sweet & juicy while perfectly crispy on the outside. Highly recommended.
This is one of my favourite places to go for a Bloody Mary and this time round it didn't disappoint neither. It had the right level of spices.
We also shared a mushroom, blue cheese and rocket pizza which was tasty and the best part was the lunchtime special price of $10.
The only downside would be the condition of the bathroom. It was quite dirty.
Invited as a guest to sample the menu. Cheeseburger with grass fed beef, cheese, pickle, mustard and tomato sauce ($5) — pretty good value, would prefer a soft milk bun over the toasted bun it came in. Snack Size Pickle Chips, beer battered & deep fried with kimchi mayo ($5) — crispy thin batter, quite addictive if you love the zing of pickles. Free Range Bangalow Pork Scatchings with chilli salt ($6) — wasn't a fan of these as there was too much fat left on it and they were quite thick. Snack Size Hot Chips hand crafted with mustard aioli ($5) — nice crunchy texture. Free Range Chicken Wings with chilli sauce ($6) — chilli with quite a kick that lingers on the palate. Pea-lafels of edamame falafels with hummus & Lebanese bread ($10) — very interesting take on a falafel that works nicely. Bread was a bit dry and hard due to being toasted. The rocket and cucumber is better swapped with some nice tabouli to enjoy all together.
Love this place! It's a great place for a few drinks and meet up with friends. Their menu is good with a good variety of small dishes and share plates that are well priced. Staff is friendly, a gem of a local.
The Hive Bar at Erskineville and easily reached via Newtown, is a splendid place to visit with mates especially on a Friday night. They harbour a great variety of local and international alcoholic beverages as well as a delicious range of nibblies for the peakish and larger main meals for the hungry.
They're keeping the prices low, dishes ranging from $8 to $14. We shared six between four people (counting the chicken twice!), which came to about $70. If you're wondering about the total bill, Molly, the remaining $150 was for wine.
...our brief visit one Sunday afternoon consisted of a poorly made coffee and a very decent Wicked Elf Witbir.

I am drawn like a magnet to bars that have cider by the pint, kumera fries, and sassy bartenders, and The Hive is a cosy and welcoming locals’ bar in the little faux-village of Erskineville. Low-lit and warm, the walls smattered with graffiti-style art, it attracts an eclectic and friendly crowd. Today there’s a poodle sitting next to us, clad in a pearl necklace and sporting a fresh mohawk. My date works her way through pints of the three local beers on tap, settling on a Stockade IPA ($11) , while stealing my lime zest coated Kumera Fries ($8.50) . The cocktail list focuses on twists on classic cocktails, like the Clean-Shaven Sanchez ($19) : an Old Fashioned made with tequila and rhubarb bitters. Today, however, as a massive Spring storm hits Sydney, I’m completely won over by the Hive Chai ($17) , spiced and warmed by Fireball Whiskey and chilli schnapps, and I curl up in the window seat, blissfully toasty.
Great neighborhood bar. probably not worth driving across town to visit, but for those of us in the area, it offers tasty food, friendly service and a really comfortable vibe. recommended.
Love it. Great spot to chill with a drink and watch the people. Good music, friendly staff.
Fantastic. Great staff !! This place is like a little community - the minute you walk in you feel welcome and at home. It can be very busy and can become unpleasant but for the most part its the atmosphere that makes this place what it is. Food is great- fresh and well priced! Good work Erko!
Food is on the up. I've always enjoyed nights at the Hive Bar for the interesting beers and ciders, and the entertainment (BYO vinyl, trivia, variety shows, board games). Until last night I'd only tried the pizzas (very good), burger (tasty) and the felafel (excellent).
Last night we went for dinner, to try some of their 'share plate' menu. I was really impressed by their principle of only using fresh food (nothing frozen) and sourcing free-range meat. Also by their prices. This is nicer than the usual pub/bar food -- food you actually slow down to enjoy -- but at the usual pub prices. Dishes are $8-$14, and you'd probably share 3 between two people.
Chicken ballotine: this is a special right now, but looks like it will be put back on the main menu. Supremely tasty chicken, served with fresh fettuccine. Salty, in a good way, and goes well with red wine. Highly recommended.
Pork belly: tender and tasty, and a steal at $10. Cauliflower puree and lemon bring out the best in the meat.
Lamb rump: cooked rare and on a tasty salad with rocket and haloumi.
Hot chips: Made fresh from potatoes every day. Served with cayenne mayo and tomato relish. Crunchy and delicious, and not overly salty.
Stuffed zucchini flowers: hard to go wrong with goats cheese. Really good with the tomato relish.
Erko's greatest Bar!. The Hive is a buzzing bar with a fantastic atmosphere. The entire place just opens up onto the street with large bi fold windows and seating outside. The music is possibly the best in Sydney, its a great blend of funk, soul and some club classics. The wine list is great, they had a fantastic Zinfandel a couple of months back, and the food is excellent. I recommend the shared cheese platter with a bottle of wine, or the mini burgers with a beer, the perfect way to spend any Saturday arvo. The service is impeccable, very friendly and accommodating. We organised our engagement do here recently and they guys let us have a wine tasting to choose our favorite wines. Also Gary the head chef was extremely helpful, offering ideas for the food arrangements and let us sample some of the delights! If you are every in or near Erko be sure to drop in a drink or two!
Funky village hang out. On a warm summer evening there is no better place in Erko village to hang out for a drink or two, lingering on for a selection from the tapas menu (the menus themselves are cool record covers). Bring the dog along !
Fun decor, hip bar folk, and always lively music to get you in the mood.
Fantastic vibe! Great staff. Great beer on tap. Menu is simple but hits the spot!
Great vibe, good service, interesting drinks menu, food ok. good fun, vibrant crowd.
I really support the small bar movement; I just can't abide the 1000-people mosh pits this city has so I was delighted to see The Hive open up in Erko. Went there before and after meal at Maggie's Thai (disappointing I'm afraid) and was encouraged but with a couple of reservations which I hope will be seen by the owners as constructive advice.
First: the eclectic hodge podge decor is OK and different but ony to a point. Done well and you have the class of The Gazebo or one of Melbourne's great little places but done half-heartedly it doesn't always carry it off. The bar area is interesting but down the back you just feel you're sitting in an overlit hallway against a white featureless wall, detached from the life and atmosphere at the front.
Second, turn the bloody lights down!! Small bars thrive on intimacy and mood lighting, candles, tea lights and dimmer swicthes. This place has none of those. It was like being in a doctor's waiting room. Why can't small bars and diners get it right? I asked them to turn the lights down twice but they couldn't manage it. Turn 'em off and get tea lights, guys! Service was kinda friendly, though the cocktail guy with the hat was a tiny bit too cool for school and made an OK rather than "the best" vodka martini (which bizarrely he asked me to pay for up front which meant I kind of saw it coming).
Anyway, a good place, more of a Newtown feel than an Erko feel and one I'd go back to for sure, but only if they fix the lighting and finish the decor. There's an upstairs too but didn't venture up. And they do food which would probably have been better than Maggie's Thai!
Lovely!!. I organised a booking for my birthday a couple of weeks ago and the guys couldn't have been more helpful and cheery to deal with. The food was great the music was fab and the handcrafted beer and the cocktails were both ace! They even let us have the whole upstairs area to ourselves. There wer board games for the kids to play and the staff were attentive and fun to interact with.
Good place. My first visit here was for wine tasting with fun facts by comedian Merrick Watts. It was something different from other shows I have been
Food - lot of options for vegetarian ❤️
I am going back again to try other options
On Election Day, this was the perfect watering hole afterwards to refresh and gorge ourselves on the delicious food on offer. The chilli chips were super good, the service super friendly and a wide range of drinks available. The Bar is has lovely bay windows so you can sit and watch the local wildlife pass by
If you are looking for a cosy and relaxing place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon this is it! Nice open air area and good selection of local craft beers. The cheeseburger was hearty and tasty. The chips and fried kimchi vegetables were super crispy! Highly recommended!
Food was awesome but unfortunately they were out of beyond burgers (our non-vegans friends were desperate to try them). We got the edmama burger and the chicken slaw burger which were good too. The best was the jalapeno poppers. YOU MUST TRY THEM!! Also has the deep fried pickles, cauliflower buffalo wings and poutine fries. Could eat these sides on their own!
Good small bar with good bar food.
A small bar that sells alcohol and food, additionally they have a bookcase at the back full of board games -- if that's your thing while at a bar.
Two stories with two bars but on the Saturday I went, the upstairs bar was unmanned. It's not a new building nor is it incredibly clean, however it is a good pub.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, banging vinyl tunes by the live DJ, super tasty food with heaps of vegan options, and a wonderful assortment of beverages including a number of local craft brewskis!
Perfect for people watching from big open side window at about 6pm summertime (visiting from Brisbane staying Newtown - came across while walking so only our 10 cents worth). Great vibe and friendly staff - Wife’s champers was fresh from new bottle, my Pale ale (Shenanigans off tap on special) was very insipid however - no criticism of this lovely bar though!
Good selection of drinks, wholesome and reasonable priced and yet great tasty foods, people at the bar are very attentive as well. Definitely recommend to go
