Review 1989 Arcade Bar - Sydney

This bar has an amazing vibe and appeals to all ages. The selection of games was very well thoughtout, they had all the names that would come to mind even if you weren't born in the 80s. It's quite big as well, there are several rooms on both floors full of machines. The staff are friendly, the deal is that you buy a beer along with some coins. Each game is $1. They even have a Mega drive with Sonic the Hedgehog at one of the tables. My only suggestion would be about having some more convenient places to put your beer while playing the games. That said many people just hang out at the tables around the bright lights and sound of the machines . Had a really amazing time. It's a great place to take your friends to see something totally different, definitely recommended.

Randomly walked in here when the trains at Newtown were cancelled to kill some time. Wow. What an amazing experience. Arcade games from back in the day and some really awesome pin ball machines. The pin ball machines even have drink holders on them so you can rest your beer while racking up the points. What a great time. Highly recommended for some beers and fun.

Amazing place, and fantastic game themed cocktails. Bring along your dollar coins for the arcade machines or chill with friends with the plethora of board games provided. Fun retro atmosphere feels more like a friends house party in their garage, googly recommended experience. Bookings are essential for groups.

Have always loved 1989 for casual nights out with friends, but most recently hosted a work function where we hired the whole venue and it was a roaring success. Cannot speak highly enough of how straight forward and easy it was to arrange the event, including upfront pricing with no hidden extras. Ben at 1989 was also so accommodating when it came to specific needs for our group, covid postponements and all the rest and on the night the staff were fantastic. If you're looking for a party venue, 1989 is a great option!

Super cool vibe with all the classic must have machines on top of some new pinball spins. Staff were awesome and friendly and cocktails not too bad either. Dropped in on an unexpected gem of a comedy night on Wednesdays too which was awesome also.

Great selection of machines, happy hour $5 Reches :-)

With the high drink prices, you'd think they could maintain the machines better. We did get unlimited games on one of the Time Crisis guns after they tried to fix the coin slot but the sights were off so it wasn't that great.

👍went a while ago but It's a very fun date location. There are arcade games and board games. However the food was pretty average and not that exciting. It is worth going for the experience though.

Fun bar with a nice twist (retro video games). Good selection of games, both video and board. The staff can seem a little "try hard" at times, not really offering much in the way of service, acting more like you're hanging out at their home. The games are definitely the selling point. They also host a video game markets each year, which is great. Although it's always so crowded during the event you don't have much of a chance to browse the games on offer. Overall a fun bar to hang out at, have a beer and play a couple of throwback games. Good to follow on SM too, as they have events fairly often

Loved the vibe and the super cool retro arcade games that bring up great memories. The staff were real cool and chilled. It was a lot of fun playing these old games and brought back memories.

How have I not already reviewed this place. This is my hubby's favourite place. It's a nice flash back to retro gaming. Their coffees are pretty good too.

With the selling point of arcade machines and games, this little bar did not disappoint. They also offer some craft beer on tap, but mostly in bottles/cans.

We ordered the beef burger and chicken and bacon burger. Fries are perfectly cooked, and the burgers are simple but satisfying. My chicken burgee can use a bit more sauce as the chicken is slightly dry, but i liked it anyway.

Beer is interesting and cocktails are simple and straight to the point. There are
Many nostalgic boardgames and arcade machines. A bit of a walk from the station, but worth it.

Didn't even know this place existed until a friend recommended it to me, tucked away right at the north end of King Street. Walking in was like a blast from the past! - full on 80's retro gaming nostalgia! Played Super Mario Kart for the first time in 10 years (and lost pathetically!) and ate/drank away my loser sorrows with a couple of happy hour ciders and a cheeseburger. Definitely coming back to play Mortal Kombat! Thanks for a great night! :)

Great Bar! We went on the themed tournament nights Mario Kart - SOOOOO Much fun! Takes you back to your teen years. Great beers on tap and the cheese burger is awesome. Bring your $1 coins and a sense of competitive fun!

Such a fun joint. Awesome retro vibes, yummy food, generous happy hour 5-7pm, board games and comic-book-wallpapered toilets. Will be back for sure.

Young lady that served me was courteous and knowledgeable. Fish and chips with smashed avocado side was nicely presented but fish felt and tasted like a lesser quality than might be expected for $22.00 and an eat in experience. My long black was good (no milk/sweetener) so had a second with a berry muffin - nice.

Love this place! Fun ambience with arcade games and giant VHS video wall. Great food with good variety of items, awesome coffee and a very solid Happy Hour with $5 beers and $10 Espresso martinis. Great for families too during the day.

If you're going to have terrible service (ie the disinterested staff and shockingly rude female manager) then you at least need decent food. Unfortunately the food at 1989 is, if anything worse than the abysmal service. I won't be coming back and I suggest you try somewhere else.

Have been there night and day, it was the most fun and part of one of my most memorable dates. The arcade was alot of fun and a great addition for after an amazing dinner.

Have been there three times and each time hasn't failed me, coffees and burgers are superb. The waiting time isn't long, it's warm, friendly and the staff are great!

Loved it, so nostalgic with the art, movies and memorabilia on the walls. The food was excellent, fish & chips and the 1989 cheese burger were fantastic. I'm being precious but think the staff could present themselves but more professional, taking people to try the place out, look your best or respectable. All in all love it, especially the Street Fighter 2!

This place is a little gem! What a trip back to my childhood. I love the care they have taken to decorate this place, such as using VHS tapes as wallpaper and the including of grrat board games like guess who and uno! The arcade games are a sure way to keep clientele happy also! We ordered their classic cheeseburger and it was delicious, meat cooked to perfection and wasn't sloppy. Fresh veg and birger bun topped it off to make this a wonderful experience. Will definitley reccomend to everyone. Staff were friendly and it's also a great place to bring kids!

The burger was mammoth! Everything in the burger was a delight to eat, from the mashed avo to the melting cheese! Tried this place out on a $12 groupon voucher that had me a chicken and bacon burger with a banana milkshake. It also doubles as an mini arcade where you can play games for a buck. Even their bathroom was colourful. Good location and friendly service. Come again? Absolutely!
