Review Kawa Cafe - Sydney

Marisha Antolak
I got eggs Benedict. You might think it doesn't look very presentable but I tell you that it was so crunchy and delicious. Happy to see very well made hollandaise sauce (not the one from the box). Yummy! Thank you for a good start of the day! 🩘🩘🩘

Cafe is super cute and been a few times. Good coffee and juices and love the falafel plate but ive ordered it three times and its been inconsistent, still good though. Obviously short staffed because of the covid aftermath but service is really slow. The staff are lovely but sometimes you feel forgotten about

The food was pretty good, nothing wow but the vibe is great, so to is the location. The main let down was the service especially the time to get a coffee, dining in I was able to finish my food before I got my flat white. I'd say it wasn't too busy, but everything else was fine but that was a real let down given how good everything was. I'd try other cafes in the area before returning just due to my experience

Love the ambience of this place. All day breakfast, great menu, friendly staff

I know this place has good food and a good location, but the people who own it are clearly over running a cafe, service was terrible. Waited 20mins just to get a menu. Waited another 15 for someone to take my order, but no one ever did. When the waitress sat down to eat her own lunch and continued to ignore me, I gave up. Only go here if you’ve got a few hours to spend.

Awesome food! ordered the home made hummus on an impulse after having ordered breakfast and it was so delicious! Lovely atmosphere, and the service was amazing. Especially love the outdoor seating!

Great atmosphere and yum food!

I used to come here all the time. There was a lovely young bubbly girl there who had or has been working there for a long time who was always sweet to my dog. I’ve worked in high end retail for a long time and know good customer service and I was often ignored when sitting down and left to wait to order for a very long time even when it wasn’t busy and this was before covid. The food and coffee were great don’t get me wrong but I don’t go back anymore because of the slow service and an awful feeling of being ignored.

Went here with a Groupon. Pre booked but they didn’t have info of our booking. Waited 15mins and got a spot. They gave us the discount but it was a bit of a standoff before they did. Husband had the vegetarian pasta. apparently it is a bit spicy but the serving size was large. I had the Kawa minestrone soup with Parmesan and no pasta. Lots of vegetables were in it and it came with 2 slices of either Turkish or 5 grain sourdough bread. I got the sourdough, it was a thin small loaf but I left very full. Highlight: serving sizes

Not a great experience at all:

- my plate (big breakfast) was a gathering of tasteless ingredients, at this price and comparing with other Surry Hills' cafes, you could expect something much better;
- service was very bad, the guy asked me 3 times what I ordered, also went back and forth with my partner's plate as he did not know which table ordered what. To end on a happy note the other guy even tried to charge us some extras that we did not take.

Probably the worst place we went to in Surry Hills (and we know many!). Not recommended at all.

Cute cafe in Surry Hills. Plenty of outdoor seating so you can bring your doggo. Got the vegan big breakfast and there was a whole lot going on which I'm not complaining about because I love a good feed. Decent place for brunch.

Gorgeous cafe on Crown Street. Staff are friendly, they have fresh juices, a delicious big vegan breakfast & yummy sticky chai tea. There’s free wifi & chilled vibes. Good place to come study and chill for a couple of hours.

I just had a home delivery of a so called Minestroni soup and a Watermelons salad. This was the worst food and value ever. The only good new is that the portions are very small.
Sydney Food By Chloe
I had the pleasure of dining here when Kawa was doing a collaboration with Kellogs cereal and it was as though my childhood came to life! I wish I could relive it again and again! I had cornflake crusted chicken in a burger, coco pops hot chocolate, sultana bran banana bread and a fruit loops cupcake! Just YUM!!!

Think we got the cafe on a bad day the service was really slow and the food pretty bland there was also a mix up with our order so had to wait a long time
Haluk Camcigil
The decor is very cute and homely. I had three dishes from the small plates section of the menu and they were all terrific. The humous is probably the best I've had in Sydney

Wonderful cafe with a great atmosphere. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The food is so yummy. I would recommend the vegan big breakfast or the chicken ball sandwich which is apparently their speciality. And if you have room after your meal don't forget to try the coconut cake. Coffees are good and the sticky chai tea is the best hot drink!

Great country style vibe. Good coffee, great eggs and best rosti in Sydney. Been dropping by regularly for quite some time. Definitely recommend coming here when it's not too busy.

What a bad service.... i went there today and been told to have a seat anywhere. I sat on a table which had all the dirty plates and glasses from previous customer. The guy who worked there was cleaning the other table and saw my table but kept walking. The other customer came and sat next to me. He quickly greeted her and gave her the menu then asked her whether she wanted any coffee.
By then, i already waited for more than 5 mins without any acknowledgement.
I left the cafe and will never go back again plus I will let everybody i know to not going to this bad cafe.
I ended up at the cafe cross the street (Pieno) and got a much better service there.
I don't think they realise that Surry Hills has a lots of great cafe and we don't need to go to Kawa.

Got a mango and raspberry frappe to go last weekend in the city. It wasn't the hottest day ever but when couldn't you use some mango and raspberry magic ❀ was mega refreshing and staff were very friendly.
Veggie Seeker
Well decorated small place, yet seats quite a few. The staff is very friendly and the food was delicious.

We had the, "Fried spiced cauliflower with hummus and chickpeas", which was delightfully different dish. Almost wanted to lick the plate clean.

Next we had the "Kawa famous vegetable minestrone soup". Absolutely loved it. It was full of veggies and pasta topped with some cheese. The bread served with the soup was a touch too crispy for my liking.

Saw one of the staff members put cookies in a jar and could not resist having an oatmeal cookie, and liked it very much.

Above all others though it was the lemonade that made my day. Without exaggerating, it was simply the most awesome lemonade I've ever had. Will return surely just for the lemonade if for nothing else.

Food: Good 😊
Drinks: Great 😁
Service: Good 😊

I ordered the Kawa Club Sandwich while my friend ordered the Kawa Breakfast Salad. I loved my sandwich. The crust on the bread was quite tough and hard to eat but with that aside the triple decker, jaw breaking lunch sandwich was quite tasty. The breakfast salad was also nice. The addition of the apples added a nice sweetness to it all. The homemade lemonade is a must try.

Kawa is an institution, and I have drunk a lot of coffees from here in my time, though I think I had a phase of chai latte too
The tables outside are, to me, what Surry Hills is all about, or should be about, and it’s always surprised me that there’s not more outdoors seating in the neighbourhood, to watch our diverse community walk by with dogs, shopping bags and briefcases.
Rebecca Yuan
Friendly staff, the place is really nice, especially in sunny day. Sitting outside under the sun, I ordered veggie big breakfast, pretty vanilla, the atmosphere good, they are specialised at juice, I shall try some next time

Was honestly expecting more considering the hype, but it was quite average. The staff were nice, but our food was quite average. I had French toast which has rice bubbles on top and maple syrup. It was nice and sweet but not the best French toast I've had. Coffee was average, not the best. Not sure if I would make the effort to come back..

I've always wanted to pop in here and finally made it! Service is great, the layout style is warm and cute. I had a regular flat white (the art had a little more to be desired) quite milky and not bitter which I appreciated and the single serving of avocado with a side of bacon. The bread is amazing and bacon was cooked to perfection. My hubby had the big breakfast and asked for a side serve of sausage , unfortunately they had run out. He had the traditional lemonade which he gave 3.5/5. He felt the glass was on the small side and too much ice packed in.

Great food in a cosy little outlet. Being a tea lover I was extremely pleased to see that they have a great tea menu. I ordered the ginger honey tea and it was wonderful. The food was quite delicious and they provide a generous helping of butter and bread to accompany your main. Definitely a must-try.

So glad to walked into this garden-like cafe. The interior is beautiful. The food is good and service is fast. I ordered the fresh toast is pretty nice and yummy. Will be back soon

Sweeten your morning with the classic cereal favourites at the pop-up cereal cafe. Start with your selection from a Special K berry smoothie or cereal milk thickshakes that will compliment the delightful Rice Bubbles coated french toast - my top pick off the menu. Continue with the baked eggs resting on Just Right cous cous; a little bland for my liking as were some of the other dishes below.

I might have missed the cereal bit about this cafe? I thought it was owned or endorsed by Kellogg's based on reviews and pictures. Anyhow maybe I didn't see it - either way got a chicken ball salad which was so yummy! The chicken balls were hearty with ham and corn and general yumminess ...coffee was great and so was the green juice

When I heard Kellogg’s Australia was launching a custom created menu featuring their favourite breakfast cereal brands, I knew it was only fair to attend and do him proud! Kellogg’s has partnered with one of our favourite gems on the Surry Hill’s cafĂ© scene, Kawa. This longstanding brunch hotspot offers a daily delectable breakfast and lunch at their Crown Street venue.

Really disappointed with the service. This cafe advertised Smashed Avo on the menu, but the avocado came back sliced. After offering to fix it, it came back with hardly any avo and only 1 slice, not 2 that I originally ordered.

I offered to give some feedback about making smashed avo but was told "every cafe does it different' and had to pay full price.

Won't be going back in a hurry.

Great cosy cafe which is perfect for a casual catchup or even some "alone" time to get away from the daily madness. Lovely staff, great coffee, decent brunch choices, plus there's baked goods to enjoy!

Kawa is a small granny-chic café on Crown Street, an old-timer in the Surry Hills cafe scene. After some deliberation over the extensive menu, I settled on a lunch option, the Ploughman's Lunch, whilst M opted for a brunch option with the brekkie salad. The Ploughman's Lunch sounds very much like something you might expect on Cornersmith's menu, and whilst I haven't tried Cornersmith's version, I can verify the deliciousness of Kawa's. With two generous slices, there was enough toast to enjoy with all the toppings. All the elements went well together except perhaps the meatball, which felt a little out of place on the plate but it was nice to eat nonetheless.

The dirty chai was a little disappointing in that it tasted more like an espresso than a chai but I think that I have to accept the fact that they will always taste this way and if I want the taste of a chai, then I should just order a chai (and a latte separately for the coffee).

We stayed at the café for some time having juicy conversations and talking out some issues before making our way into the city to do some shopping - of course. Kawa is just like your grandma's familiar and welcoming house, although perhaps not quite as cosy.
Whippy Cream
A really cute friendly cafe. The staff are extremely friendly, definitely a standout to other cafés in Surry Hills. I ordered their smashed avocado and it was one of the best I've had. Also a substantial size! Not just one measly piece of toast that a lot of cafés serve up these days. Good ambience, nice outdoor seating.

Great breakfast or weekend brunch coffee shop. Staff are kind and fun. I recommend the teas. Great lazy weekend place. Highly recommend this place.
Pollo_pesce_me
Good place to have breakfast on weekends but the place gets pretty busy so best visit early mornings. Coffee is a little weak but it's good. I usually order vegan big breakfast. They are always nice.
For lunch options I always order Toasted Sienna tuna sandwiches, I have been buying this sandwiches for the last 20 years every time when I have lunch here and I still like it. They also make great juices.

For a meat lover like myself, it is always an adventure for my wife to bring me out to what she works consider a vegetarian friendly venue. To be honest, i enjoy a good green when it's done right, but because of my distaste of vegetables that is unappetizing, you can find me often putting it to the side to show my distaste.

Kawa in Surry Hills gives a rustic organic feel. From the choice of decor and coffee beans you can feel the vibe of a place that tries to give something back to the community.

Service was good and friendly. Even offered us a bigger table to make sure we are comfortable as soon as it was obvious our table would not be able to comfortably fit our dishes.

Coffee was not bad, 2 beans on offer on that day which is nice to see some options were available. Their juice and other drink options seem like a great refreshing concoctions using fresh fruits and vegetables.

We had the ploughman's lunch and the
Kawa's big breakfast. The big breakfast came with two toast and an assortment of apple with a sweet taste and cheese that plays around with the taste buds. The single chicken meatball was delicious but way too small for my liking. The ham and toast works well with the mustard. A mix of beetroot gives a sweet taste to the numerous combination of flavors.
The big breakfast is a dish that is rich in green like avocado and quinoa. The potion of bacon and egg gives the salt to compliment the sweet and sour in the vegetables.

All in all a wonderful hearty meal. The vegan options are plentiful which makes this a wonderful option for those with friends that have a vegan persuasion.

Add me or comment if you disagree as I hope you can enjoy Sydney's culinary offerings
Haven't eaten eaten here. Just coffee and cookies. The coffee is pretty good. They use The Little Marionette beans. The cookie is my favourite. White chocolate ganache between two muesli cookies. Served slightly cold to keep the ganache good I guess. Bloody delicious. I always grab one of these cookies with my coffee here.
... A Little Bit Of Salt N Light ...
I remember ordering my first Chai latte when I was in high school, thinking that it was some kind of flavoured coffee like hazelnut latte. Chai latte is actually a tea beverage flavoured by various Indian spices and herbs, brewed with milk. In western culture, people immediately relate to the package of Indian spices and herbs like cinnamon, ginger and cloves when being asked of what ‘Chai’ is. I was once talking to one of my colleagues from Turkey about ‘Chai’, and he told me how he found it strange that people think Chai is a special kind of tea or flavour, as in Turkey (and in many Eurasian countries as well) Chai simply means ‘tea’. The name for Chai latte in Hindi is Masala Chai, meaning mixed-spice tea.

Extremely rude owner. I cannot believe how someone with such terrible manners and angry, negative attitude can run a café and work in hospitality.Apart from the owner, the floor staff are nice. But I had such a terrible experience that I had to leave half-way through my meal. I don't think I have ever had such bad customer service. The food is average café fare, nothing exceptional, and it is slightly overpriced.I am not going back.

Will be back. My friend and i stopped here on an impulse after wandering surry hills abit and feeling quite peckish. we both ordered avocado on toast- wait time wasnt too bad, and my oh my, the avo on toast was amazing- the best ever!! servings were generous though you could tell they had purposely arranged the tomatoes on top to hide parts of the toast that hadnt been spread with avocado but the perfect 'toastiness' on the toast and the amount of salt and pepper made up for it. all in all, pretty good experience!

I was prepared to try something vegan but when I saw French toast with banana, maple and bacon ($17) on the menu, how could I not? Kawa has an all day breakfast and all day lunch menu, which is definitely going to suit everyone. They also has an extensive drinks list of coffee, tea, smoothies, frappes, milkshakes and freshly squeezed juices. My French toast was delicious, not too eggy which I do find sometimes, and the banana was layered inside both pieces of toast. Winning! The vegan big breakfast ($17), had everything you can imagine...
The Chronicles Of Hilda
Kawa is one of those places I manage to pass by without a second thought although it's one of those places that's almost always full, yet without a massive queue out front. It's often highly recommended by each and every person who knows the ins and outs of the eastern suburbs of Sydney and a favourite among fashion bloggers and even recommended by Miranda Kerr herself. Known for their organic meals, Kawa has an enticing variety of options for every taste. Latte $3.30 Breakfast, brunch or lunch really isn't a meal without a coffee. Coffee at Kawa is by The Little Marionette so expect a smooth blend. Eggs florentine with smoked salmon - organic poached eggs atop buttered toast with spinach, salmon and hollandaise sauce I love eggs benedict but I think I love eggs florentine with a side of salmon more! Overall I feel it's a relatively healthy dish with the only naughty aspect being the hollandaise. Some might say the serving size at Kawa is small but it's perfect for me. Salad - smoked salmon served on rosti potato with baby spinach, red onion, capers, mayo and lemon dressing served with wholemeal bread $16.50 Not too dissimilar to the eggs florentine comes the simple salad with salmon and potato rosti. It's a super simple dish to make at home so it does seem a little silly to order when eating out. Out of sheer laziness the only thing I would probably refrain from cooking at home would be the potato rosti. Overall, I enjoyed the salad, although dressing was somewhat lacking, and it's much better than some of the over the top salads you get at other cafes. There's definitely no shortage of cafes in Surry Hills and Kawa is up there as one of my regular haunts. What I like about Kawa is it's simplicity. If I want simple breakfast food done well I can count on Kawa to step up to the plate. I also love the fact Kawa closes at 5pm and not 3pm because more often than not I really need a decent cafe kick beyond normal cafe closing times! Kawa 346-350 Crown St Surry Hills NSW

Kawa has a relaxed atmosphere with white walls and mismatched furniture. My friend and I both ordered the Vegan BIG breakfast. The dish was served warm (which is very important) and the roasted pumpkin was so freaking tasty! I like how the baked beans are homemade and the hummus are creamy, they went really well w

Kawa Cafe is a cute little cafe that offers a large variety of all day breakfast options offering omelettes, smoothies, big breakfasts and vegetarian options...
The Culinary Creep
One thing that hadn’t changed in all the years is the speed of service which sad to say is still at a snails pace. To be honest, the punters don’t seem to mind and if you’re looking for a place to while away the hours and not be hassled to give up your table, then this is really the place.
Let Me Feed You
Their coffee was pretty good, but we were served by one cranky staff member.
Melissa Loh
The vegan big breakfast came with a roasted tomato and rather than butter (or margarine), there was thick hummus. Now I love butter, but the hummus was much more satisfying. The nutty chickpea flavour was subtle and its creamy texture was so easy to slather onto my toast. It inspired me to make a batch of my own the week we got back to Brisbane and I ate hummus on toast for a week. It was that good that I wanted to relive that experience over and over again.
Clarissa And All Her Wanders
They didn’t have creative dishes on their menu but you can’t go wrong with classics like Eggs Florentine.. which is exactly what I ordered. He ordered scrambled eggs, toast with a side of rosti (yum!)
Vegangela
It’s a much more complex meal that doesn’t feel like a bunch of side dishes thrown better. Regardless, this is still a great vegan breakfast and I have to give props to any restaurant that offers a vegan option on their menu.
Gastronomous Anonymous
A popular little cafĂ© on Crown Street, Surry Hills. It’s cozy, unpretentious, and serves delicious homey, organic food, and all day breakfast on weekends. I took ‘The Mother’ here one weekend, for a casual brunch. He ordered some tea, and I love the Chine

Kawa is a popular local cafe in Surry Hills that almost looks like a little cottage, has a real sort of rustic feel complete with mismatched and antique furniture. I love it. They serve organic food and do a great breakfast/brunch. On this occassion, Carr

Delissimo. Perfecto! Molte grazie...

Lack of attention to detail. Compared to any brunch joint in Melbourne this "happening" place is way behind. For a start poached eggs does not = boiled. Secondly you need cutlery to eat. Finally - lack of attention to detail.

Good, but nothing *too* impressive. My friend and I stopped here for a lunch on a Monday afternoon, and luckily there were tables outside available! I had the eggs florentine with salmon on rosti, and she had an omelette. The eggs in my florentine were a little over poached and the hollandaise looked a little broken, but overall the dish was alright. Her omelette was a pretty large portion with very sweet pumpkin inside, and she seemed to enjoy it!

I don't know if I'll necessarily come back because there are plenty of other great options around, but it was worth a try at least once. The service was pretty friendly and attentive, too, so that's a plus!
Pee
Really BAD poached eggs - super over cooked. Lots of dirty smokers outside!
Kristen
100% disappointing. I was a repeat customer 5 days a week. Today i go in and the owner of this cafe is now (unfortunately) working there.... you couldn't come across a more inflexible and rude person. If you want to keep your customers lady you need to listen, be accommodating of the small things and actually appreciate repeat business. I got pure attitude to my enquiry and a stare down. Will not go back. Don't bother going here people. Its overpriced in the first place. Much better quality Cafes in Surry Hills, with great produce and nicer owners and staff.

LOVE!. Went here this morning with a friend for the first time and absolutley LOVED it! i ordered a cappucino and the big vegan brekky. Coffee was perfect and the vegan brekky was yummo! loved the hommus and roast pumpkin which you dont often see on a breakfast menu. will be back!

The most dissapointing cafe in Surry Hills.
We live locally in Surry Hills so we explore and frequent the cafes. We've only been to Kawa a few times previously as we never had an outstanding experience in general (standard of food or service), but if we are only stopping for coffee and we happen to walk pass it, we can tolerate it.

Today however the experience at Kawa would have to be the worst. We only decided to go there today as our regular favorite cafes weren't open, and really, we should have just followed our gut instinct the fact that we never had good experience even on normal weekends.

Firstly we waited for about 20-30mins for a table, which is fine as it is NYD so the queue is longer than normal. And the waiter admitted that he mistakenly gave our table to another couple behind our name by mistake, which we didn't make a fuss as we can see there's a free table coming.

The waiter that took our order was very friendly and came to us promptly to take our orders. We ordered Poached Eggs on toast, Bacon & Eggs sandwich, a latte and a tea. The drinks came promptly and they were of average quality (coffee was below average). But we waited for one hour for our food after we placed the order!
When the food finally came, the poached 'organic' eggs were over cooked with dry sourdough 'organic' toast. The bacon was thick and oily, the cheese was horrible cheap quality looking oily sliced cheese, the sourdough bread wasn't toasted so it was dry and tasted stale.
Other than the friendly waiter to safe the day, everything else was just horrible. It was just not a nice experience at all.
I never understood how Kawa is always busy and today made it even more questionable. It's just a shame that a bad cafe is busy because the owners will never know that they are not doing a good job compares to all the other cafes in Surry Hills.
Lauran
Great atmosphere. I do love this little place for a healthy treat. The people are a little brown nosed, but hey it's surry hills... Everyone is just too cool for school u know, so if that doesn't bother u I'd say yes. It's my fresh juice injection place for the day... Food is not that fab, and coffee is not that impressive. Overall I think it's atmosphere that make at this place popular ...

Totally Unimpressed. We came here for a Monday brunch and were completely disappointed with the service and food. Whilst the outside appearance was enticing and cosy looking the menu was ordinary and the food even worse! We ordered the big veggie breakfast which was served cold with hard, rubbery poached eggs. We also ordered the mushrooms on toast which were stone cold and were tinned, flavourless mushrooms. Also had an omelette with avocado. the garden salad which was served with it had old, limp spinach in it with no dressing and was just plain bland and very ordinary. No apologies from the staff at all and no real improvement when it came out the second time, other than it was steaming suggesting they had just put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Very unimpressed and wouldn't recommend it.

Really nice place but accuracy abt d order..humm. My DF n I walked in to grab something for lunch as we did not have an exact place to go. The place looked so cosy in such a sunny winter afternoon. The interior was great and lovely, and the menu was pretty flexible. They offer breakfast here all day -- yahoo, and if you are hungry, they've got a serious lunch menu as well.
You dont have to order at the counter, the waitress would come to your table and bring the menus.
To start with, we ordered a cup of cappuccino and a latte each, the waitor delivered the coffee to the wrong person -- it's ok, we just switched. My latte was very nice, with a silky froth and not so strong.
I ordered an omelette and was more than happy to find that you can choose the fillings urself: not only the content, but also the amount! You can choose omelette with 1,2,3 or even 4 fillings, cfcoz the latter comes with a few extra bucks. I chose 3 fillings: salmon, spinach and mushroom. My friend ordered a big breakfast dish.
If you are kinda in a hurry, it's not a wise choice to dine here for lunch. We waited for nearly 20 minutes and finally the food came after we asked the staff to speed up. My omelette looked a bit overcooked on the outside but maybe that's d way they do it here, at Kawa. My friend asked for scrambled eggs but received two poached eggs. He told the waitor and, nicely, they brought up an extra plate of scrambled eggs. But, 7 eggs for 2 ppl at 1 meal, tht is really a LOT of eggs to eat. We dun want to do that ofen.
My omelette taste average, it's not really overcooked but not so fluffy as expected. The mushrooms were great, and the spinach, they were generous in the amount. The salmon, um, generous again in amount, but a bit too salty. The side garden salad was nice with a vinegar dressing.
Lucyg65
Useless Waiter. This afternoon a friend and I went for a nice lunch at Kawa. The food was fine, the coffee was good eventually (will discuss later) and the atmosphere was enjoyable.
Unfortunately the waiter let our lunch date down massively! After forgetting our drinks TWICE, he then proceeded to bring me a latte after I had ordered a cappuccino. Once I had informed him of his mistake he actually said to me; "Can't I just put some chocolate on it to make it like a cappuccino?".
erm no waiter, you can't. Wow.
And then whilst I was still munching on my sourdough, he took my plate away! Anything else?Thankfully, no. That was enough mistakes for one day.

Had a great juice this morning
Duane
We went here for breakfast and coffee. Relaxed setting and a nice place to watch the world go by. The menu had variety, with a number of bread options for each menu option. Coffee was nice and there are plenty of juice options. Friendly service and good value.
Tinker_belles_diet
It's a shame service and quality of food and coffee at Kawa are such a let down. The constant change of staff let you know something's going on. Kawa has great decor and is always fun for people watching but don't expect anything else. There's nothing home made about the food and someone needs to go back to basics and teach the baristas how to make a good cuppa. Honestly don't bother you'd enjoy it more just walking by.

Great French Toast!. Great food, good coffee, fast service. good overall experience over the Easter break. will be back for the french toast!
Ashley French
The lady with short black hair i guess is the manager was rude i was short ,50 cents and she said to me and my girlfriend find the money or else. I will never go back. The food was outstanding but her over all never will i go back beause of this.
Simone
Rude staff. My friends and I have been to this place a number of times but were really shocked and disappointed with our experience on Sunday afternoon.
We'd been enjoying our afternoon coffees and had had good service until one of the other waitresses (short brown hair) came over and, without introducing herself or even saying 'excuse me', started shifting furniture into and around us, barking at us "OK ladies, you've been sitting here all afternoon and now it's time to share".
She shoved the table away from the wall to accommodate a new customer and in so doing, shoved the other end of the table right into my friend's stomach. The waitress then proceeded to aggressively shove the chairs under the table, during which she slammed one into my leg. No apologies whatsoever. She simply turned and marched off, returning with a menu for the new customer, who looked as shocked us we were.
Granted we had been sitting there for a while but the place wasn't busy and we were willing to share the long table we were at. All waitress needed to do was ask.
There are ways of doing things and this waitress's approach was downright rude and unacceptable. We won't be returning anytime soon, at least while she's on duty.
We paid and left and then one of our company decided to tell her how rude she'd been. Her reaction? A dirty smirk, "well you've been sitting there for hours."
In short - a lovely afternoon ruined by a rude, surly and completely out of line waitress. Some lessons in common manners wouldn't go astray here.
Lauren Trott
I've been here a few times - the food okay, the service is average, its basically somewhere the hipsters can go to be seen. On my last visit on NYE12 the Irish waitress was SO RUDE!! Makes me sick to think people like this have jobs! Never again Kawa!! You're too over priced for me to be verbally abused by your staff. Go across the road to Room 9 where you get more for your money, in both food and service.
I'll Eat Critique
Breakfasts organic. Been an off again on again affair at Kawa, They have a birds nest seating up stairs which i really like because I'm an observer.

Its supermodel heaven with some of the hottest ladies getting in the late afternoon tan at KAWA

French staff are friendly which is rare, the food was great and the coffee had real punch.

Sadly ive heard they are struggling to get the mix right and have lost their status as a leading cafe i hope they regather and fix whatever s broke because its such a nice place

Highly rated and for good reason. Excellent service, very reasonably priced and superb food and equally tasty beverages. Only disheartening thing was smokers next to us, but apparently smoking in outdoor eating venues is permitted in NSW. Ventured out of the CBD to check out this place, and was well worth it. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!!

Food looks good, tastes average and unfortunately was cold. Waited a while for food and longer for knife and fork. Coffee ok, better places in Surrey hills.

Great spot.. Tasteful & homely decor. Food reads really well in menu however slight let down but definitely edible! Service was great too. Will be back for sure.. Hope the 'okay' meal we had was just a once off!

Cool little spot in Surry Hills. They have done well with the design. Great place to celebrity spot.

Nice Location - Poor Service. This cafe attracts the wanna-be Surry Hills Parisian Gitane crowd. Unfortunately this also apply's to the staff who are almost without doubt the most unprofessional mob of back packers you are likely to meet. It's a shame, as the location is great (lot's of smoke though) and the food is of the usual run of the mill presentable Surry Hills fare. I have gone to this location for over a decade and the current incarnation is letting customers down. Hopefully competition will give them a kick up the behind. Most recent visit actually resulted in no service after 15 minutes and staff laughing at their own incompetence. We decided to leave and go across the road. Very poor.

Kawa is the kind of cafe that feels like an extension of your living room. Its white walls and mismatched furniture make for a relaxed atmosphere; the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon with friends pouring over a pot of delicious spiced tea or Single Origin coffee and tasty organic food.

Pretty good brekky- just standard breakfast menu offerings though. There are better and more creative places elsewhere...

10/10 ambience. Among the best ambience of any cafe in Sydney - a great place for relaxing and chatting, very nice and bright interior. Service is also very good.

Watch the world go by. Cute little cafe with mismatched furniture. Great spot for people watching.

The downside to this is that you can't really escape from cigarette smoke: since the doors are usually open in summer, any smoke tends to waft inside. Which is not a huge deal, unless you are very unlucky.

The service was attentive and friendly, prices were ok.

I had the porridge with bananas, cream and brown sugar. I loved that the sugar was served on the side but personally would have preferred a bit less cream or to have that on the side too. But then again there are thousand ways to love a porridge.

Amazing, try their vegan big breakfast, or their vegan sandwich on toasted Turkish bread, you won't be let down!

The breakfast at Kawa is amazing! Fantastic fresh juices with perfect poached eggs. Would highly recommend a side of roast pumpkin. Yum!

Natural and tasty. This place is old school Surry Hills in that it's casual, unpretentious and has a cosy setting where they serve fresh and tasty food that is fuss free and generous. The coffee is good and the service has improved. Great spot!

Kawa on crown st surry hills. This is my favourite cafe in sydney! i love love love the coffee and the vegan big breakfast is super...the food is organic and fresh and the chicken ball sandwich is divine. i bring all newcomers to sydney here and with its laid back vibe its great for people watching and catching some late afternoon rays over a milkshake sitting outside.
i have been coming here for 4 years now and have not had a bad word to say - I wish it was open for dinner!
ChellaBella
