One of our favourite sushi places. We love their spicy tuna roll, soft shell crab roll (super generous with the soft shell crab!), seafood salad, and sashimi moriawase!
Service has been friendly every time we dined here.
For parents with prams — We’ve been twice with a pram, which is fine as we got seats at the back close to the wall. But it’s a bit hard to manoeuvre the pram.
Strongly recommending the volcano sushi with salmon and eggs stuff. Never had such amazing type of sushi before! Other foods are also tasty and excellently prepared.
I came here for Sunday lunch with my family. The food is delicious and we couldn’t fault the flavour and the portion size. I’ve been to Japan plenty of times and this restaurant is the closest in terms of flavours and quality. I highly recommend this place if you want high quality sushi and Japanese food. It is a little bit more pricey compared to other restaurants but the taste and portion sizes justify the price.
The chirashi rice bowl is infused with truffle oil and the crab is so tasty. A must try if your a fan of truffle.
The wagyu bento box is filled with lots of various side dishes and the wagyu melted in your mouth. I especially loved how the sauce merged with the rice and meat, so yum. I’m not sure if you can see it pictured but the salmon cuts with the bento were huge and I loved the tofu and salad with it. I definitely will be getting this again.
The salmon salad was fresh and the sesame dressing was amazing, a light simple tasty dish. The volcano maki is a restaurant favourite and the salmon really does melt in your mouth.
In terms of pricing we paid around $70 for 4 adults and we were all very full. The bento and chirashi gave with miso soup and you get free tea. I was very impressed and will definitely come again. You should definitely give it a try.
The meal is tasty. I love the hot pot and the lunch bento supplied at weekend is also recommended. It is nothing different from the Japanese cuisines I used to have in Japan and China.
I often enjoy sushi in this shop. I like everything in this shop, including sushi and wasabi. I think it is the best sushi shop in Anzac pd.
The sushi here were fresh and delicious. The tuna belly was fatty and the egg on the tamago nigiri was hugeeee! We also got 2 sushi rolls -one was the spicy tuna roll. I really liked the spicy tuna roll, the spicy mayo did not over power the tuna and they gave generous amount of tuna in the roll.
We got the tori karaage too but might just focus on the sushis next time.
Took a friend who just arrived in Sydney to this place for sushi. Unexpected fulfilling experience. Very generous portion and good taste. Had a lovely lunch and will be back
Wonderful experience with exceptional food quality and reasonable pricing. Highly recommended raw fish dishes such as king fish, salmon and scallops. The sushi roll and volcano maki is another highlight
I’d rate food 4 while 1 for their service. We haven’t been there for while, this time we noticed that the portion turned smaller. You really need to retrain your staff. Owner Please check reviews out no matter on Zomato or google, to see how customers complain about the staff.
Salmon enak ! Boleh coba .. atas grill bawah mentah
Kepiting volcano itu kurang fresh ya agak amis a bit
Maki mentai normal aja ..
Size nya mmg beda sama yg di Indo, bigger roll an nya jd buat kenyang abiss ..
Bento cuma ada pas lunch, dinner ga ada
Tempat nya di lokasi strategis dekat kampus UNSW
Well, this Japanese restaurant has changed its decoration and opened again. It's brighter and cleaner than the previous.
Lots of friends of mine who study in UNSW recommend this shop to me. They believe that it is one of the restaurants that they frequently visit.
We tried their bento. The price is around $15, and it really worths.
One is #Bento Mix#, which contains Katsu chicken, salmon sashimi, sushi and seaweed. That's a lot of food! Everything is fresh and OK. The best is the price.
The other one is #Unagi Bento# The Unagi is really nice. There are 3 pieces on top, along with sushi and octopus ball.
We also ordered the #California Roll# , only to find that we are too full to eat that. We took that away and it was still great even after a few hours. The roll has much ingredients inside, and again is price-worthy.
However the service is the main reason why I didn't give a higher mark. There are only 2 staff serving outside, and they forgot to bring us the water.
just next to UNSW this shop is really convenient to visit. the sushi is tasty as the fish used is really fresh☺ the volcano maki sushi is a must try as well as the scampi one❤
Massive ... The best sushi in town
Love it
Especially the size and portion of the sushi
Service was average
But the food was absolutely amazing
Came here with my relatives who're regulars here..
Great food, good service, good ambience. I personally like the salmon sashimi the most. Will definitely come again in the near future.
Sushi Tengoku has always been my favorite option when it comes to good sushi, big portion and fast service. My comfort food during college days up till now :) not only are all the food tasty, but the price is fairly reasonable for the portion. My favorites include the aburi salmon, aburi scallop and volcano maki!
I really like this place. It's so informal that you tick a box on a menu to order and you help yourself to the ginger and wasab sitting on plates in the corner. We even helped ourselves to our neighbour's soy sauce when ours ran out. The servings are great, $14 will get you a tuna or maki roll that will sort out your cravings for good. People can spend all they like arguing over whether it's strictly authentic or not, I'm too busy eating big yummy sushi to care really.
Great Sushi placw with big servings. If you are coming for dinner or you are a large group, booking is essential. chicken katsu is great and recommended to try. DO NOT try the gozya. the dumpling is not handmade.
Have been there quite a lot of times for the past 7 years due to the impressive sushi quality and unbelievably size. But I have just realized that they have moved to the new location with a bigger space. They also hire more people to shorten the food waiting time. In their old location I have waited for a hour to get the food plenty of times when they are busy. Now even they are in busy hours, the food come in about 15 minutes which is a lot faster than before. But I must say that they have changed the owner about 4 years ago, where the legendary quality does not hold. I still give full marks due to the 7 years long association.
Ordering was done by filling in a paper at the table. Arrived at 11:30 so there was no one there yet but the restaurant quickly filled up soon after. Most of my group ordered bentos but the mixed sashimi on the table next to us looked really good so will be definitely trying that out next time. Bentos were really large and good value for money especially with all the variety. I had the chirashi bento which was very refreshing and yummy. We ordered a salmon roll for the table, whilst there was a lot of salmon it was nothing special. Overall pretty good value of money and the food was nice and fresh. Will definitely be visiting again to taste that sashimi platter!

South east asian sushi. That is how I sum it up :) lots of the dish offered suited towards the south east asian market of people living in the area (really I do not see many Japanese eat here!)
Been eating in this sushi place since my uni days (almost 20years ago now!)
Service are much better now with the team enable you to book table WITHOUT having to know what you want to eat first! (they did say if you dont know what you want, you can't book a table here with the old owner).
Since the nephew took over, service gotten much better and still the same food.
With their move to the new place, it is more spacious now and with better ambience.
Volcano maki, baked scallop are must try dishes along with their aburi salmon.
Food: 4.5
Service: 4
Ambience: 4
The food are great and has lots of variety Also the place is nice. Price are kinda cheap good for students. Not just the sushi, but other food like chicken katsu and udon are tasty too.
Definitely the best restaurant in the hood! I can eat there every single day! The tamago is the best I have ever had. The sashimi and sushi are always super fresh. Now even better with the new dining environment and dessert menu!
Pretty delicious Japanese! I went to Sushi Tengoku about 2 weeks ago, before they moved to their new venue on Anzac Parade. It was extremely cramped but the food absolutely delicious. We ordered two Bento boxes take away with karaage chicken, salmon sashimi, salmon and avocado sushi, wakame and...
what is this magical place....? their sushis are super amaze and the fact that their salmon sashimi is just so perfect makes me want to cry in joy. when we're visiting, we ordered 3 salmon sashimis, salmon sushis, soft shell crab sushi, and some other that i couldn't remember because we were too full to remember!! the service is amazing, and speaking of they moved to a new location! the new location is very open and i love the lighting there but it's kinda awkward to have stranger suddenly catching your eating face while you're trying to devour this lovely salmon sushi (no joke i accidentally made eye contact with a stranger and i reeled them in lol)!! i will definitely be back!! this place has amazing japanese dishes!! 10/10 recommended!!
come here for the sushi size, amazing big and tasty (not the best cuts but decent for its size and price). love the egg, the scampi (get the soup with it) the salmon and the seared salmon. definitely recommend and revisit
The food is good, but the one time I ate there the sashimi white fish was not fresh and had a bad smell and I recommend to get the
Tamago
Salmon Aburi
The sushi is relatively expensive
Most non descript frontage for a shop ever. Menu prices seem expensive but size wise I think much better value than $3 sushi train in the city (tho sushi Rio has gone up now 3.5).
Be prepared for around $50 for a couple to be full but it's all quality.
The staples that I must get every time in order of favourites
Salmon Nigiri: Bigger than average grilled salmon with yummy sweet Teryaki sauce I want to know the recipe for
sushi
Scallop Nigiri: two big grilled scallops on each bit of rice a with sweet Japanese mayo.
Volcano roll with fish roe on top: takes a bit longer to come since needs to be made then baked
Soft shell crab roll: to round things out
Stumbled upon the city one during lunch but it doesn't have the same menu or because it was lunch but I didn't feel the same love sorry.
My boyfriend and I are regular Tengoku visitors. Their food is always high quality! Particularly good is their spicy tuna roll and yasai roll. The edamame is always perfectly cooked! Very friendly service, although sometimes slow. The value for money is unparalleled!
Tengoku needs no introduction with their monster sized sushi. I've yet to try their CBD venue but the Kingsford location has served me well over the years. My top tips are
- Tamago nigiri
- Spicy tuna roll
- Soft-shell crab roll
- Sashimi platter
You can't get better value sushi here especially in the Inner East locale
Nice place, came during lunch on a Saturday. They had bentos which were quite value for money, had a good chirashi bento at only $14! The scampi sushi + miso soup was really good, it was the only picture I took.
Really easy way of ordering the food, just write down your orders on their order sheet. No fuss at all, the service was nice and fast too.
In summary, if you're nearby and in need of a good and value for money Japanese fix, do consider sushi tengoku!
This is one of those places that you wouldn't expect to be great when passing by. I've been here a few times now and its always impressed me. Small venue but very popular every night; with the uni crowd, sushi foodies and business people. It makes nigiri, maki, sushi rolls and sashimi in the most traditional way; serving a small amount of rice and a large portion of topping. We ordered the sashimi combination, extra squid sashimi, tamago+masago+tako+hiramasa kingfish nigiri. The food came fairly quickly for such a busy place which was nice. I have absolutely nothing to fault with the food, Sushi Tengoku is the only place imo that does squid sashimi so well! The only unfortunate thing, is that this place is not known for their customer service. If you come here, be aware that the food is what is amazing. You probably won't find waitresses that are entirely on the ball. Otherwise, fantastic!
Sushi heaven indeed! From the outside, sushi tengoku looks like an abandoned joint but the queues tell you that there's something delightful hidden behind the door.
Taste the selection of sashimi, sushi, hand rolls and small plates here. Forget about the bento box even if it's the best value for money you'll get. Sushi here is served very similar to the style in Japan. Large chunks of seafood and small pieces of rice. The quality of the sushi is fresh although it still lacks the sweetness that one would get from top notch sushi joints. Some good ones to try include the Aburi scallops, salmon belly, kingfish and soft shell crab roll.
All of the classic japanese small plates such as kaarage chicken, gyoza and takoyaki are done well and are worth a try. My personal favourite are the gyozas because they have a crisp bottom and soupy interior. Every bite is bliss.
Service is a little spotty because the place is so busy. It's recommended to make a reservation in advance. Price is reasonable.
Delicious Sushi and the largest tomago that I've seen! But don't expect great service. Very good local sushi place. Scampi nigiri + miso is so good on a cold day and the scampi was really fresh! Sometimes prices are a bit deceiving since their per unit.
I came here for lunch on a Saturday and it was surprisingly pretty empty. The decor is simple and you order by filling in a piece of paper and then handing it to the staff. It's not a place you linger as its all about the food.
We didn't have to wait long before the dishes started to come out and everything was good. While the prices seem high, the portions are quite big. We ordered a chicken teriyaki bento box, soft shell crab roll, seafood salad and eel sushi. The bento for lunch is great value and the seafood salad was generous in size with small pieces of sashimi/seafood. The soft shell crab was massive with a nice crunch.
I definitely want to come here again to try more of their food!
If you are Sushi lover, this place so amazing, very big size for sushi. Sweet egg on top of rice or salmon on top of rice, you will wonder!!
It's safe to say that tengoku is by far my favorite place to go to if I'm craving some nice and fresh sushi. You'll definitely be surprised by the size of the fish on top. Love the complimentary barley green tea served there too. Although I can't really complement on the service and environment. Not a good place for a first date but the best place for sushi lovers.
I so dread Fridays... it means I'm yet again forced to choose a place to dine at in Randwick... and I hate the variety I'm presented with. I ended up doing yet again more research... branching away from anything walkable and found Sushi Tengoku.... a short drive from where I was (well I would have walked it but the weather was most likely not going to hold up).
I walked in and indicated I needed a table for one... and the waiter looks around slightly annoyed as he most likely felt he had to give away a table for two just for me to dine. I finally get seated and noticed I have to pencil in my own order and felt slightly rushed with them standing over my shoulder... not helping but a sense of urgency was placed upon me. I quickly made a snap decision and settled for their Sashimi Bento box with mixed sashimi, agadashi tofu and an avo salad with my choice of chicken katsu on rice.
As I waited for my food I noticed the customers keeping coming and going from this place. Despite its location... it did not deter many Uni students from making the trek here. That's gotta be saying something.
They started me off with a free bowl of Miso soup. I took a sip and pushed it aside... no MSG water for me thanks... that stuff will keep me thirsty for ages later in the afternoon....
The bento box came out and it presented well. The right balance of everything in a box. The katsu had a nice layer of mayonnaise and was prepared well. The rice was a bit hard for my liking.
The agadashi tofu was silky smooth and had just the right amount of sauce for each piece to absorb enough flavour.
The sashimi was delicious.... and I was surprised I got more than just two easily pieces like most Japanese eateries...
I think I have to agree with the majority... this place is bang for buck. It offers high quality food without that premium price tag.... if they can work on having some friendly service as well then I'm sure the ratings for this place will be almost a perfect 100%.... in the meantime I guess a bit of attitude won't stop me from a return visit.
The size of the sushi is huge, not in a-bite-size unlike any regular sushi. The aburi scallop salmon is the best! Place is small and always busy with customers but the service is speedy.
Sushi Tengoku in Japanese literally translates to “Sushi Heaven”. It is a bold name for a restaurant, but there is really no other way to describe the warm and fuzzy feeling that I get whenever I savour a mouthful of sushi at Sushi Tengoku . Each bite temporarily teleports me to a euphoric universe so beautiful that I feel like I have traveled to heaven and back.
If you ask me which sushi restaurant I like the most.. My answer will be.. SUSHI TENGOKU! We used to live in Eastern Suburb when we were in uni and during that period we'd heard a lot of buzz, mostly from UNSW students and locals that Sushi Tengoku is the place to go if you're after fresh sushi and sashimi around the area.. and.. YES! as a sushi-fanatic, this place has been our favourite since then...
December 12, 2014 December 7, 2014 / samanthawxlow I’ve pushed back writing about Sushi Tengoku for so long that this post is a compilation of something like four visits. So this means even more photos that I’m confident will leave you salivating all over your keyboard. Sushi Tengoku is a UNSW student’s worst kept secret. No one specifically tells anyone of its existence, but it’s openly talked about on the assumption that everyone knows it. The draw of Sushi Tengoku is in its ridiculously large fish to rice ratio in their sushi. I’m talking fish the size of my palm with a rice portion the size of my finger. If you somehow went through your entire university life having never step foot inside the most unassuming restaurant ever (no interior photos, but it’s just a really basic outfit) you should definitely cry. But cry while running towards Sushi Tengoku. It’s not going anywhere but you need to make up for lost time. Aburi Salmon and Aburi Scallops ($7.50 for two pieces) The aburi sushi is something I order every single time, evidenced in these two different photos of it. You have to order the aburi sushi in pairs, so if you want salmon you’ll have to get two pieces of salmon. It’s not a problem at all, (if it is for you, you should invite me) because the aburi here is class A perfection. The salmon is creamy and moreish with a heady smokey flavour. Scallops are plump and juicy but also with that alluring scent that comes from searing it with a blowtorch. I say this every single time I eat seared seafood, I really need to get myself a blowtorch so I can aburi all the things! The Tamago Nigiri ($3) is another novelty order that’s delicious. I don’t know how many eggs go into making one single piece. The Salmon Nigiri ($3.50) is looking a bit small next to the tamago but I assure you it isn’t. The egg sushi is just *that* massive. Super rare instance where I order a Chawanmushi ($6) in the face of scrumptious seafood. I have always loved steamed eggs and chawanmushi i
The rolls here are gigantic! In a way that’s both good an bad. The good parts first: the serving is definitely money’s worth. The rolls are thick and you definitely feel that it is worth paying for. The toppings are generous, and there was a great mix of vegetables and tuna. The bad part is that the roll can be too big to eat comfortably. It won’t fit inside the mouth without coming apart, and hence sometimes it gets quite messy.

Big sushi! you get what u paid for... Top notch quality, delicious food! Must try the tamago sushi, chirashi sushi and volcano roll!
We’re pretty impressed with the changes that happened at Sushi Tengoku! Still the same gigantic sushi and baked scallops, but now without the ridiculously long wait time! My personal favourite is still teriyaki salmon fish head. For only $5, it is by far the best value for money dish.
If you can get past a long waiting time, slightly above average price, and average table setting, then Sushi Tengoku is a good place to eat. I was going to give a higher rating for this one for the taste, but other factors dragged them down considerably.
The sushis are massive and baked scallop is just over the top. If you don’t mind a fish looking at you, then the Salmon Head is really a bargain!
Did you know?
As most UNSW students would know, Sushi Tengoku is the place to go if you’re after delicious and fresh sushi and sashimi in Kensington. The restaurant is always packed out with locals and students gorging on the huge sushi rolls with plenty of mayonnaise and fillings such as tempura prawn, chicken katsu and soft shell crab. It is notorious for its slow service, as it is usually short staffed but the restaurant seems to have changed management lately and the service has improved as a result. The décor of the restaurant is still nothing flash, consisting of plain plastic furniture and an open steel kitchen which allows you to watch the sushi chefs slicing the fish and rolling the rice with seaweed. So what keeps us coming back for more if it isn’t the décor or the service at Sushi Tengoku? Here are a few of my tried and tested favourite dishes… Scampi sushi with soup $7.50 and Scallop sushi $3.50 A great value combo to order is the scampi sushi with miso soup which makes the most of the

Lesson learnt: always order what the restaurant specialises in. I don't know what drove me into order tempura and teriyaki chicken at a place named Sushi Tengoku. It could have been the cold windy wet weather... or maybe it was Zen...
Amazing amazing Amazing. Don't let the interior fool you. This place has a great reputation for a reason. I've had amazing sushi and sashimi here. Soft shelled crab was ok though. The serving portions were massive and you will overorder by accident. Would happily return! Service was good too.
Simple interior with massive nigiri. This visit to this restaurant was not planned, and as there was not decent restaurant around, we decided to give this a go. To our surprise, it had high reviews on urbanspoon and i will have to agree with the reviews. My advice is to only order the nigiris, they are massive! With only a small amount of rice, the size of the scallops, salmon, etc. towers over the dish which left none of us with any complaints. Another bonus was the complimentary tea, it had a fragrant roasted taste. To finish off we had Japanese green tea ice cream for only $2.
The quality of the fish and dishes here is amazing. The servings sizes are generous and well priced. It's a very busy, little place. Very basic decor, definitely casual, but the food is awesome. Worth waiting in a queue to be seated for sure.
Aburi Scallop and Aburi salmon nigiri are highly recommended. Salmon and soft crab maki rolls are good as well!
The service here is less than desired.. everytime I've been I've had to flag down someone to give me a menu to order on...
HOWEVER I still love the food here, my favourites are the scallop sushi, tamago sushi, and fresh sashimi... everything is definitely without a doubt fresh here. I also love their speciality volcano roll here... everytime I eat it it's always still to hot but I can never wait... it might be bit pricey but I think it's definitely worth it. this is one place that the mediocre service doesn't stop me not coming back, I just love the food here
Mr hungry. We went there on a busy Sunday night as usual. We waited about 10 minutes while they searched for our table. We ordered our food while waited and once we sat down came all those yummy food. Sashimi here is second to none, so fresh delicious and sweet. We had the uni ( sea urchin ) and they were so tasty. Then the big gigantic softcrab roll, and salmon avocado roll. Must try those big rolls with less rice and more fillings. Very reasonable price for the quality and the portion. Oh yes...those volcano maki just explode in your mouth....so yummy. Going back soon.
Crowded but good.. This place is pretty good. I wish there was a bit more variety besides sushi but I understand that's their specialty.
The tempura is beautiful and the chefs are very welcoming. It's good to have decent Japanese in Kensington.
Great sushi @ Kensington. My boyfriend and I went there on a rainy Wednesday night so there weren't a lot of people at the restaurant. (But to our surprise, it was 70% full)
The green rice tea which they served was so good that we had two pots by the end of the dinner.
The service was extremely fast, we got our first plate of food within 10 mins, and subsequently within a few minutes each time when we finished our plate of food.
The rolls were really good. Unlike most sushi restauranst, Sushi Tengoku put a lot more main ingredient in their rolls than sushi rice. This makes me a happy camper!
Tempura Prawns: Pretty standard, quite yummy and not too oily.
Special Volcano Roll: Filled with seafood (scallops/ salmon and fish roe), very good.
Soft shell crab Roll: Very fresh, highly recommended.
The decor of the restaurant is definitely weak. I wouldnt go there on a date or special occasion. But for plain good sushi? hell yes !
Fresh, fast and delicious sushi! We are regulars here and often bring our friends, although we don't live anywhere close by. Soft shell crab sushi is quite popular!
This is an excellent low cost place Japanese for the sheer freshness and size of portions (as seen on pictures). The overall value for money is great, and the variety available is limited but decent. Good range of Bento boxes as well as udons and delicious tempura. Some options for drinks but it's a BYOB which makes it amazing for bringing in your own fine quality booze for the occasion.
The owner and staff are extremely friendly too. It does tend to get busy with both ends of the spectrum from students to business people so timing or delivery might be required.
The portions here really are immense. Generally good quality fish for price and the shear size you are served. The aburi was probably our favourite, particularly the scallops and scampi. Unagi was ok but looked better than it tasted (but we might be holding people to too high of unagi standards).
All in all a good casual place for sushi and would easily recommend!!
Probably the biggest sushi in Sydney if not Australia The size of each nigiri here is at least twice as large as standard nigiri out there, fish is so big that I cant see the rice. Size aside the quality is really good and freshness is guaranteed, they have a wide selection of sushi but aburi sushis (salmon, kingfish and especially the scallop!!) are our favourite. Cant wait to be back!
Very nice sushi. Gets a bit busy so best is takeaway or delivery. The shiromi differs by the day so there's always something new.
Interestingly different from most sushi places you've tried before. Sushi tengoku sets itself apart from others by providing extra large cuts of salmon, tuna and more to top your rice.
The advantage of this is that you get much less rice in each bite, however you lose the ability to easily pick up the sushi and each piece takes more than a single bite to finish.
Remember that because the pieces are bigger the price will work out to be able the same as a regular place and the amount you'll need to order will be much less.
I would recommend limited yourself to one Tamago sushi per person as there are very large and very filling.
Worth it for the portions alone. When my friend told us their portions were generous we thought “yeah, okay”. But no, like actually, it’s massive. We over-ordered not knowing how filling just one piece would be. The quality is good and when we were there it was quiet so everything came out quickly.
Good Japanese restaurant in Kensington near UNSW for casual Japanese dinning. Came here for lunch on friday afternoon and they have a big menu selective of Sashimi, Sushi Nigiri, Sushi roll, Lunch Bento Box, Teriyaki & Grilled, Fry, Udon, side dishes to choose from. You order by marking a sheet, which you get when you sit down. We tried the Teriyaki Bento Box with Teriyaki Chicken as a main and served with california roll, takoyaki, wakame seaweed with rice & miso soup. We also order the 5 piece mixed Prawns and Vegetable Tempura and their new special tonkotsu ramen. It's good portion and great value to eat here the food was easy to like and they have self served green tea.
