The tempura here is the best that we’ve had in Sydney. The menu is succinct and not trendy, but everything is very well done. We love it here
Wonder why this place is a 3.1. Definitely loved it. Everything we ordered was so so good and authentic. That's real Japanese cooking. Atmosphere was nice as well.
We ordered sashimi, beef tongue, pipi and udon.
Sashimi was fresh and high quality. Perfect thickness to get the rich texture.
Beef tongue was well seasoned and tender.
Pipi was surprisingly sweet and tender as well and the soup was so spot on!
I didn't taste the udon noodle but the tempura was cooked to perfect.
ありがとうございました!
What a lovely spot with great food. Very cosy environment and staff were most welcoming and helpful. The food here was scrumptious. Definitely back soon.
Service was excellent and feels like a pleasant family-run restaurant. From the moment our order was placed, the team in the kitchen cheerfully cooked away and we couldn’t fault any of the dishes that we had ordered; certainly a testament to the food quality. Konakara will undoubtedly be a regular!
A quaint little place, we were seated with enthusiasm. Their menu isn't extensive but you have more than enough to choose from.
We were impressed with the presentation and freshness of the sashimi. I also enjoyed the wagyu with sesame ponzu (went very well with the onion). Everything else was decent but had its drawbacks. The kingfish was flavoursome but was a bit overcooked for my liking so it was a little dry. The salmon tar tar don didn't have much flavour at all.
With that being said, the service was attentive and friendly and it's a fairly new restaurant so I'd give it another go but it is a bit out of the way.
Konakara is a small restaurant with a pleasant vibe and definitely a place to take your date for an intimate night out. The food was simple, delicious, and authentic with very fresh salmon in the salmon tataki we had. Portion sizes were on the smaller side, especially for a big eater, but generally decent in comparison to other restaurants. Service was friendly and efficient. Will definitely be back.
A new open Japanese restaurant in Surry Hills, with simple, bright and open-out design. There are no sushi on the menu instead it offers a different kind of Japanese food with authentic taste. Each dish highlights our dinner with its own unique flavour. We will definitely go back again to try for others. The restaurant is BYO at the moment while they await for their liquor license.
Strongly recommended salmon tartar don,the sauce is great, the combination of salmon and egg is amazing!!
Chicken karage nan ban is nice, crispy outside and moisture in the inside, I like the sauce.
It’s the first time I tried eel tempura, definitely a new experience and a new way to enjoy eel.
Eel don, salmon carpaccio and Fried oyster, compared to other dishes, are not too outstanding. They are good but not too special.
Steam pipis is light and not too fishy (which is good for me), but there are still sands in the pipis.
Dessert:matcha mochi. Mochi is hot and sticky, eat together with the ice cream is nice and the fruits are fresh.
I am not a duck person, so duck loin is definitely not my thing. The meat is still rare, so the smell of the duck is strong but the texture is nice. If you like duck, you might enjoy it.
This is a shop I would come back in the future.
Unlike many of the fusion restaurants sprouting out in recent years, Konakara remains as one of the authentic Japanese restaurant hidden away in Surry Hills. It is small but cosy, and run by Japanese family serving classic Japanese comfort food. We enjoyed our dinner and service was friendly and attentive. Highlights were grilled crispy skin chicken, chawanmushi and toro nigiri sushi bluefin tuna. Highly recommended and will definitely be back again.
Really nice izakaya place with unique Japanese dishes that taste very authentic. Ingredients used are also very fresh and their wagyu is very tender.
The wagyu and uni was definitely worth the price with a generous piece of wagyu that melts in your mouth, topped with a rich portion of uni.
Sukiyaki, agedashi tofu and fried oysters were all amazing. Love this place!
One of the best family feel Japanese Izakaya restaurant in Sydney.
Both taste as well as the presentation are great.
Moreover, this is the only japanese Izakaya in Sydney that makes me truely feel the passion, love and craftman spirits that the owner putting into every single dish. It is truely an amazing authentic experience.
Will come back for sure.
I use to come here for lunch when they do the lunch service. Their lunch menu was good! Hearty, authentic Classic Japanese dishes like ramen, Udon, Donburi & Bento Box that is satisfying. Hope they open up again for lunch soon.
It is definitely very authentic Japanese restaurant, you can tell that family who works here is passionate and kind. Restaurant is very small, but has calm and welcoming interior. I especially enjoyed their prawn tempura and clams, however sashimi plate was lacking quality cuts and seemed overpriced. Still worth coming as all the sauces and dishes were made from scratch.
Cozy restaurant. One of the rare and authentic Japanese restaurants in Sydney that’s actually run by Japanese chef, owner and staff. Fresh delicious food and friendly service!
One of my favorite Japanese restaurant in Sydney! There is no other place like here. Authentic Japanese food made by Japanese experienced chefs. They know tasty food and so do I! Highly recommend.
