Great place to grab a meal. Ordering can be a little confusing - you just go in, grab a table and walk up to the bar to order when you're ready. Serving sizes are very large - I could have shared one dish between two as I ended up taking half of mine to go. There is also a happy hour from 4-6 every day that I would definitely recommend taking advantage of.
The pork belly I ordered had a crispy crunchy outer layer and the meat was deliciously melt in your mouth. It was accompanied by a good heaping of fermented red cabbage. The mash potatoes were a bit under seasoned and the gravy was a bit gloopy and tasted like beef stock. But loved the apple compote, tasted just like the inside of an apple pie-only wish there was more of it. The fries had just the right amount of crunch and were seasoned perfectly.
There are surcharges associated with paying with card, Public Holidays and Sundays. I don't mind the surcharges, although I probably would have liked them to be less subtle about them, especially the Sunday surcharge.
Not having eaten any meat in 5 days (trying a new diet), the Munich Brewers Platter for 2 was exactly what I needed to break my meat-fast! With an up-tempo pop music playlist creating the atmosphere on a somewhat quiet Saturday lunch-hour, I was eagerly awaiting a good hearty German meal while evaluating their table setting (scoring a 3/5 stars on the napkin test). And when our platter arrived, boy, our table was almost not large enough to accommodate our meal (please see exhibit A)! Included was 4 types of sausages, pork belly with crackling, pork knuckle, chicken schnitzel and the following sides and sauces - sauerkraut, pickled red cabbage, mash potato, apple compote, mustard and beer jus. I was armed with my steak knife and let loose on the protein.
First-world problems, which protein to start with? This question and subsequent answer was important, as there was a remote potential that we might not be able to finish everything! NOooo! We decided on sausages 1-2 as the appetisers (mmmm spicy sausage with mustard), palate cleanser= sauerkraut; Main1=pork belly with crackling (crispiest crackling in recent memory); sausages 3-4 as a pause before the storm (good old frankfurts); Main2= big pork knuckle with crackling to be shared by 2 (really nice, tender meat falling off the bone and again, crunchy crackling with a nice layer of fat); mash potato= textural change-up; then Main3=chicken schnitzel, first with the apple compote just to break up the saltiness; then schnitzel piece 2 with gravy…… and at this stage I was getting trigger finger from clutching my fork too tightly (where your finger isn’t able to independently bounce back straight without some help). And just when I couldn’t fit any more in, there were reasonable portions of each side left , and not being one who likes waste, I took it for the team and finished it all off. *Puffer fish face*
And the cherry on top, all the while I was sipping on a German grapefruit beer, not to mention that the Bavarian is an affiliated restaurant with the Qantas Frequent Flier program, so 4000 QFF Pts= $20 off the bill! SCORE! My goodness! This was a break-meat-fast meal to remember! Will I be back? Do Bavarian’s wear Lederhosen’s’? That answer is YES and YES! Almost needing to roll down the stairs due to my poor bloated belly, I can’t wait to be back… even if it’s just for their jumbo pretzel! (Disclaimer, the Bavarian staff were not wearing lederhosen’s, but they were really friendly and attentive.)
Everyday at 4-6pm they have great value happy hour drinks of wine, beer and cocktail for only $5 and free wifi too. It is located in world square.
Came here on a very stormy afternoon to catch up with a friend from qld, very quiet as it was around 2 pm , we came to the counter and Asked for a table. The friendly waitress told us just pick any of the table and order at the counter . We ordered the sausage plate and rack of ribs , the full rack of ribs here is much smaller than other establishment however nice flavour ! Sausages also nice and good size . We also ordered a couple of flavoured beers , all good ! Would visit again to try other things on their menu . Have previously tried their other branch on york street but I like this Express branch in world square better !
This is definitely a good place for a hearty meat filled meal. I had the cheese kransky with the choice of two sides which was too much food for one. Also the Munich Brewers Platter for two should really be for 3-4 people (or just 2 super hungry people). I liked the platter because it sampled a variety of meats and sausages. Overall, the food was delicious but super filling.
Decided to try something new for dinner and opted to head here on a Monday night because it was easy. The menu looks interesting, many different choices. We ordered burgers just because we felt like it at the time. Though looking at the menu, there are many other things I would also like to try. Friend got double beef, double cheese. He said the patties were a little dry. I got the Kanzler and the thick patty made it so it was cooked perfectly. The sauce in mine also made the burger super juicy and messy, like a good burger should be. There are a good range of beers on tap and you're spoilt for choice. Overall would come back for another meal and drink with friends. Atmosphere is ok and there are a lot more to try on the menu. Don't expect anything too fancy as it is more of a fast food version of a German/Bavarian restaurant.
World square never strikes me as Sydney dining and drinking hot spot. It was probably the last place I would fancy a glass of wine on a warm breezy Sunday afternoon. And that is exactly what I did at the Bavarian in World Square last Sunday, very much to my surprise. As we walked out of a nearby restaurant, I accidently looked up and saw the Bavarian at the second floor where used to be a childcare centre I believe. On the spur of the moment we decided to stop by for a quick drink before heading elsewhere. The restaurant is very spacious and in contrast looked empty with only a handful of customers. We ordered a pint of Stigel each which I believe is an Austrian beer. We sat at the bar table on the edge of the terrace overlooking the square downstairs. It was actually very relaxing and peaceful, not a bad spot for people watching. At a quick glance, the menu appears to be mainly pizza cooked right next door at Fratelli Famous. You can also make your own salads and wrap. We had lunch elsewhere but won’t mind coming back and try it.
You can't go wrong with sauerkraut and sausages and they do them well at The Bavarian. Enjoyed as a takeaway meal, this was no sad desk lunch.
