Review Merchants Of Ultimo - Sydney

Aryeh Sternberg
Delicious and surprisingly not too crowded, the Merchants of Ultimo provided a hearty and flavor-filled meal for a large group even on a busy Sunday. Make a booking and enjoy their properly prepared pizza, the dough is fantastic, and don’t miss out on their insane pastries and cakes on your way out. Oh, and Chicken and Waffles!

A bit on the pricey side but it's because of the location? Right next to Broadway shopping centre's main entrance. Elegant cafe, well layout, looked at the pastry especially the croissants seem too burnt to me( dark dark brown). So we went with the Pizzas instead (not bad), burgers(decent size filling) and Henry's Rump( with brown rice) see photos. The meat was well marinated, pretty good for a cheap cut. Not too tough coz I ask for medium rare. tasty sauce though.

Always a busy space, on-site coffeehouse, patisserie, pizzeria, bar, and The Gardens kitchen with seating in the centre. Great menu - food tasty and well portioned. Service was not rushed; no wonder locals wait in line on busy days to get a table.

So comfortable green ambiance. Revisited again after Covid 2022 and still great coffee, good service & good fresh quality food. Their representation is fine as well.

Had the big breakfast. Not worth the $25. The bowl in the middle of the plate has quinoa salad. It’s a nice way to bulk up the plate and make it look like there is a lot on there…

Beautiful ambience, great portions! Wonderful variety of vegetarian dishes that are extremely hearty and super tasty. Our hostess was really nice and super helpful!

Unfortunately the chicken came raw !! How sad huh !? and that dish costs $26 … it’s a rip off truly … Brown rice, one chicken breast, two little sauces and few beans and tomatoes for $26 … loud theft ….. PLUS RAW CHICKEN in first attempt and BURNT chicken on second attempt … They asked us to wait to make another one take away which was as you see BURNT …. These people will make US stop eating out which is something we love most … on saying that !! The girl replaced the whole meal for take away, gave us free cake and was nice .. we were in rush and had to stay longer to get it cooked all over again but I appreciate her gesture and for that I give the girl 5 stars for customer service .. and the waitress too was also polite and friendly she deserves 5 stars. The reason I gave 1 star is the raw and burnt chicken and also for my less than appealing and less than Medicare poke bowl, it was small and just didn’t do it for me .. not the portion but the actual bowl size !! Was not big enough to mix my poke bowl ingredients and to eat comfortably and it wasn’t very tasty .. salmon looked old too … merchants of Ultimo used to be good and my favourite place but now they dropped in standards and quality .. I will not go back

We went for both breakfast and dinner and EVERYTHING was delicious. Highly recommend lemon ricotta pancakes. Lovely staff too!

I tried Merchants burger (200g beef, American cheese, onions, cucumber pickles, lettuces and milk bun served with fries) and mixed berry iced tea (was very refreshing). My friends tried Parma pizza with glass of coke and steak with sweet potato chips.
We all enjoyed our food and was filling 😁🤤
Would recommend and I would come back 😁

Favourite mocha in Sydney! Loved their hot chocolate too and the pastries and baked goods are so yum!

Atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Ordered two generously portioned salads, the salmon and beef cooked exactly the way we wanted. Would visit again and recommend to friends and family.

Adults enjoyed all the food we ordered for lunch. The only problem was the kids menu: crumbed chicken and chips. The pepper on the chicken was too much for my son.
We will return but will skip the kids meal.

Fabulous freshly baked goods. Amazing desserts. Great vibe. Best French toast ever. Love how it transforms into a restaurant with cocktails at night

The ambience here is AMAZING! They have multiple different food stations such as a bakehouse, pizza ans pasta area and then salad bar and everything is house made! There was a dude in the middle of the restaurant making tart shells by hand. Their smoothie bowls are one of the best acai bowls I have ever had, and I have had many! I definitely recommend coming here we’ll be back.

Convenient collective of restaurants & cafes in a shared location. Great aesthetically pleasing desserts and savoury dishes - chicken salad was hearty and tasty
Pizzasnob
Their coffee and chorizo croissant are the best things to try on the menu. I don't like to experiment with food but everytime I'm here i try a new dish because it is so appealing. I have finally made my way to the desserts in the last few months and I think I should have tried them earlier. Try their coffee.

After seen my friend’s instagram i asked hubby to go here for coffee and cakes (cause the cakes look good). But because we’re late it’s almost dinner time and some cakes already sold out so we decided to have dinner. We had shared pizza (prosciutto, cheese and mushroom - forgot the name) and hubby had extra Henry’s roll. Both were beautiful. Loved the pizza! Topping so generous. Price Sydney standard, not too expensive. Next time will come early so I can taste their pastry and cake.

The service is really average, it might be due to the peak hours I guess. But I really like the menu, you can diy your own omelette and salad. The smoothie and juice are really interesting. Will come by many times!

Merchants of Ultimo is such a handy spot after some shopping in the Broadway Shopping Centre. I went for the calzone which was cooked in their wood fire oven. I'd definitely have it again: the dough was perfectly cooked and there wasn’t an overload of filling. Simplicity at it’s best! #calzone #italianfood

Had the build your own salad today and can say it was absolutely delicious. Amazing ingredients and chicken was perfect. One thing I found a little peculiar was the massive pieces of broccoli and cauliflower- a little too big for my taste! Another unfortunate thing was the price - $22.90 for one salad itself (I didn’t get a drink) is too much in my opinion! But it was undoubtedly delicious and worth it as a one-off!

Very good food. Excellent service . Ambience was great. Live music was enjoyable. All these combined was a wonderful experience. Would like to visit this restaurant again.

Got some cakes take away here. I’ve come a few other times but seemed to always pick the wrong cake. Ordered a few to go and it was a hit and miss with the cakes. Got the brownie, passion fruit cheesecake, lychee and apple cake.

The passion fruit cheesecake was delightful. Had a great balance of acidity with sweetness and a really yummy crunchy base. I liked this one in general. The other good cake was the lychee one. This was light and fluffy but also not too sweet. It also had great textures going on and a lovely biscuit base.

Now for the bad... the apple cake was really confusing. I forgot what was even in it other than apple but this was extremely sweet and was not pleasant to eat. The brownie cake was the same. This was extremely bitter and had a strong taste of alcohol in it. It was really unpleasant and hard to eat.

Overall, some cakes are great, others... not so much. The service here is pretty bad too. While we were ordering one of the waitresses interrupted us to ask the lady at the counter something. They went into deep conversation while we stood there with half an order in the box. For the price you pay, it does make me feel reluctant to come back here (around $9 per cake). I will probably hold off unless they intrigue me with a crazy flavour that sounds hard to resist. Stick with the likes of Zumbo or Koi - much better investment.

awesome cakes, good coffee but seats are so close you're practically sitting in your neighbour's lap! Best coffee on Broadway though, which is something when you're on a shopping jag.

Stopped by here for some Sat afternoon tea. There is a pretty good range of sweet treats, all very delicate & lovely looking, we sampled a few & got some tea as well. The cakes we had, Mont Blanc, fig & hazelnut, lemon meringue were all very good. Service was ok.

Haven’t been to broadway foe quite long. And this Scandi Influenced Interior design catches my eyes. Food is very nice . Spaghetti Alloscoglio is very nice large portion. I ordered as well a Rissoto with squid ink is well cooked ! Napoletana pizza large portion as well good for sharing.
Love everything about the place and food . However me and my friend got a wrong order twice. And my Rissoto I ordered with extra crab on it didn’t get it. Great for casual , group and Romantic dinner . They do offer brunch as well. And looking forward to try it soon.

Their cakes and pastries are amazing! The staff said they got quite a lot of people who work nearby addicted to their pastries. Now I’ve tried the berries danish and I know he’s not wrong. You can see the defined layers of the pastry, and it is so fresh, flaky and crunchy. Highly recommended :)! I bought a chocolate raspberry cake (sorry forgot the name) for my colleague’s birthday and everyone enjoyed it too:).

Ambiance 4.5/5
The decoration here is amazing, I love it! It is a tranquil pastoral scene, although it is really noise coz it is located at the entry of the ground floor of the Broadway shopping center.

Beckery 4/5
Forgeting about the price, desserts are really good! The appearing and decoration of the desserts are wonderful! The fruit tart has an excellent base with such many fruits on the top! I never gonna forget this tart! But, the price is more expensive than other stores' normal tart.

Tea is standard and normal

Sometimes it is hard to find a good original foodie place within a shopping centre. Glad I found this place at broadway. Hip, elcectic, buzzing with an industrial modern feel. The great thing about this place is, its like a one stop healthy kind of cafe.
Now to the food. You can't go past the breakfast plate- goat cheese, poached eggs, tater tots, crispy bacon, avo, interesting bread and quinoa salad. yumo. Nice balance of flavours. The tumeric carrot fresh juice tastes like health in a glass. Mocca was standard. Next time ill try the decadent and attractive looking cakes.
*edited*
My next visit (2 weeks after the first)was a quick one. bacon and egg burger, and boy was it good. My tounge tiggled with all those flavours. Original vinergrette style sauce, pickled style cabbage (which i wouldn't normally choose) hey im not complaining I was left wanting moreeee! got a take away make your own salad- cant wait to comment. I highly recommend you try making your own salad. they have a fresh variety of beens pulses, noodles, proteins, veges and sauces to compliment your creation.
visited again for a quick dinner 5/4/18. Tried the wagyu beef lasagna with herb focaccia. mmm tasty , fresh and feels like a nice homemade dish. It was especially nice with a glass of rose. this place serves me well. Can't complain.

Went there for cakes & coffee one Saturday afternoon. It was busy. Patrons were enjoying themselves for a long lunch or dessert like us.

They have a good cake selection on display. Some full sized cakes as well you can take home to share with friends & family. The chocolate mousse cake and peach tart tasted both looked great & tasted great. Nice coffee as well. Reasonable price & friendly polite staff. Wouldn’t mind to go back to try their hot food next time, perhaps will have a different cake for dessert after the meal. 🙂

Having walked past Merchants for a few weeks we finally decided to stop in and try out the desserts they have displayed, unfortunately, that was where it all started to go down hill.

As we entered we tried to tell the girl at the front that we had four adults and three children, including one in a pram, however, we were interrupted after telling the girl we had four adults and they showed us to a table which wasn't suitable for our entire party. When they finally realised we had the three children, and a pram we were taken to a larger table.

About five minutes after ordering from a waitress who struggled to understand what we were saying, we were told that they didn't have a particular dessert that we had ordered two of (we ordered four desserts in total). It would make sense to have this explained to us before we spent 10 minutes looking through the menu and wasting our time.

Our new dessert items were added to our order and were brought out promptly, however, two of the original items that we had ordered had been forgotten and were only brought out when we reminded the waitress that we had ordered more.

There is either a lack of teaspoons or they are made with gold because they definitely didn't want us to have any. Three of the seven drinks and two of the four desserts didn't come with teaspoons, and asking multiple times we managed to get our hands on all the utensils we needed.

After finishing the drinks and desserts we headed to the cashier to pay our bill. I asked the staff member if it was OK to pay with Amex, she said yes and I made the payment. After I had paid I noticed that there was an additional fee charged for using Amex. I mentioned this to the girl who was extremely rude and condescending and said "it's written on the menu". I have never been anywhere, either in Australia or overseas where the staff member doesn't inform you of the additional fees associated with using an Amex.

The staff here need to either be totally re-trained or fired. We will never come back here again and I will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone. If you're reading this please consider going somewhere else as the service is shocking. I wish I had read some of the reviews prior to today because I definitely wouldn't have gone. Hopefully one day the owners will read some of the reviews and start to make changes to their training and hiring procedures.

Rating 4.0 for their food. Had acai bowl and french toast. And it was really nice and fresh. But their staff wasn’t smile with us but wasn’t too busy

I’ve been a regular customer and my favourite is henry’s rotisserie box. I don’t mind that they increase the price this week but also cut the beef serving size by half?
Tiffany
It's a good concept to gather different type of food in an area (feels like a food court but table service). However food was an average and coffee was quite disappointed, may be I was unlucky that day. Might go back to try their dessert instead

Delicious ingredients and nice decorations. Try the chef's box with beef, it's delicious! The meet is carefully roasted, and the rice comes with super healthy seed! Loved it!
Chicca Fumagalli
I ordered a Piadina and they didn't have problems to let me choose the ingredients, even if it didn't follow the standard menu. The taste was good, maybe the olive oil covered a little more the other ingredients but the main thing I want to say is that is not a real Piadina. The Piadina base is something totally different, this was just a normal pizza base closed as a piadina. But again, the taste was not bad, I just expected to eat a different meal than what they gave to me. Maybe they should change the name in "Piadina style".
The desserts look amazing, not just delicious but also pieces of art.
I loved the consistency of the meringue on my lemon tart. In other places is too much soft, here is harder but in a nice way. The lemon cream inside doesn't cover the whole base, it's like an half sphere in the centre, so quite hard as well.
The service was good.

Leave it to B" there's the name of pastries, cakes and other assorted bakes along with other merchants.
Nero's brew provides you with coffee and other beverages, The garden will have a healthier options for you and for the meat eater, Henry's block will sort your hunger!
For pizza lover, you won't miss this funky pizza join, Mario's
What will you choose?
FoodLuva
The pizza here is pretty average. Base was too doughy for my liking, not light enough. They used way too much red onion, I had to take some off, it was ridiculous. And the whole thing just lacked flavour. I was trying to ration the small pieces of pepperoni to try and make it palatable.
Service though was very welcoming and friendly.
Love this new (fairly new) place located in broadway shopping centre, huge restaurant just near the entrance. Great coffee, Good acai bowl (big portion) however bit tasteless i reckon, they do woodfire pizza, lots of sweets (cakes & pastries) 😍😍 check this out yourself !

It's like a food court, but with table service. The Merchants of Ultimo at Broadway Shopping Centre is like a mini food court, complete with salad bar, pizzeria, rotisserie, cafe and patisserie. What most passersby don't realise is that eat in diners don't have to line up at each stall to place their order. Roving waitstaff offer complete table service, offering a clipboard menu of all offerings and a single bill at the end.

I love the cakes here, beautifully made, bountifully presented and so sweet. The decor too is interesting, with a kind of South East Asian style delivery truck parked in the middle of it. Coffee is good, service friendly and it doesn't feel like a shopping centre cafe. Will be back to try their lunch menu.

I had the wood-roasted chicken roll, which came with a tangy slaw, pickled onion and habanero on (I think) a toasted brioche bun. This was FEROCIOUSLY GOOD. It's not huge but it's perfectly sized. Spicy, herby, crisp af. I will definitely come back. If I have one criticism, it's that the service flow is unclear. Otherwise, great.

Edit: came back a second time and I've revised my review. The service flow here is beyond confusing and the staff are just rude. This visit was the exact opposite of last time - find your own seat, get your own menu, and order at the counter. None of this is explained or made visually obvious on arrival - in fact, there's no clear entrance; you make your way in by squeezing between the tables clogging the front. Life is too short to accommodate food places that can't get their head around customer service.

Merchants of Ultimo is a brand new cafe situated at the entrance of Broadway Shopping Centre. The food collective features a colourful and artisanal confectionary and instagram-worthy salad and desserts.

I tried their tropical delight cake and flat white a few days ago. The flat white was thin and diluted and I would expect a thicker and stronger espresso undercurrent beneath the steamed milk. The cakes were beautiful but they tasted really rough (not the soft cakes which I associate with). Not sure if I would return again.

The pizza's are amazing, and i'd have to say it's one of the very best pizza's i've had ever and it's reasonably priced. I like the margharita's, thats how the Italians like their pizza's and so do i.

Merchants of Ultimo is relatively new and illuminates the left had corner at the entrance of Broadway shopping centre. It's like a little centralised food court with table service and fancier food. The menu is split into sections accordingly, offering baked items, desserts, smoothies, alcohol, omelettes, wood fire pizza , pastas or rotisserie meats.

We went as a party of 4 to merchants with a pram. The front of house attendant was helpful and placed us near the back with room to put the pram without being in the firing line of staff travelling back & forth from the kitchen. The service was overall attentive without being intrusive & they were in the call.

We ordered different cuts of meat in a "box" which came a slaw salad, salsa, brown rice and chimmichurri . The meat was plentiful, tender and cooked beautifully. We also ordered crab spaghetti. The grab was sweet and the pasta has a subtle seafood flavour. The desserts we ordered were beautiful and delicious. The side of potato fries ($5) were hazardously addictive. The meals were around $14-$20, the desserts and drinks were around $7, hot cross buns $3.50

We ordered some wine, fresh juice and a iced coconut coffee. The latter tasted very refreshing. Highly recommend for dine in or take away

It’s really impressive. They turned a non-descript corner of Broadway Mall into a hipster chic dining area. As designed by George Michael (yes, seriously), and modelled after NYC’s Eataly, it’s a perfectly designed little food experience with a barista, a bakery, a bar and a bunch of other stalls, but since it was Saturday morning, who knows? It looks good, though.

This is located on the ground floor of Broadway Shopping Centre. Merchant's is made up 5 separate eateries in the one area. They include The Gardens, Pizza Mario, Leave It To B, Nero's Brew, and the place where I got my meal, Henry's Block.

When you first enter the store they ask if you're dining in or getting takeaway. If you're dining in they will hand you a menu and advise you to take a seat anywhere. What drew my eye to his place was Henry's Block which was ensconced in the back. You can see the meats slowly cooking on the rotisserie. Service is friendly and quick.

I went with Henry's Box (beef served with organic brown rice, chopped tomato, coriander and lime, chimichuri, house slaw). The beef had a nice flavour with a nice char. I enjoyed the rice with a sweet nuttiness to it. The tomato was fresh with spanish onion, and the slaw was slightly salty. The Peach Ice Tea was from Nero's Brew. It could've done with a tad more flavour.

Definitely would like to try the other food outlets within this precinct. They were quite busy and can see why with all the delicious food on offer.

***edited 30APR17***

Tried Pizza Mario this time and sampled their Pappardelle (Lamb Ragu With Mushrooms, Porcini Dust, Tomato) which had a fresh thick cut pasta with a sumptuous flavoursome tomato ragu that had soft chunks of lamb. Very tasty with freshly grated parmesan on top. Had a Apple and Lime Green Iced Tea. It was nice and refreshing. Service was great as usual.

***edited 02DEC19***

Usually my go to at Broadway shopping centre when I want a bite to eat before or after shopping. They completely dropped the ball on this occasion. Not sure if the servers order did not go through as I noticed everyone seated after me and ordered after me all got their drink and food orders quite quickly before my drink even came out. I then asked one of the servers who passed by to see where my drink was. It was brought out after 20 minutes after they took my order. The original server saw that I never received the food and went to check with kitchen. Whilst this was happening more food was brought out to other tables whom I observed order after me. By this stage I was fed up and walked out.

Got an take away salad from them. Great value with the 6 toppings and 1 sauce for $10. The truffle mayo sauce they have for the salad is amazing, will definitely go back for a yummy TA lunch!

Will also look for another sit down meal too as the layout is just so decent and lively,
Issac_eatsalot
Got a coffee to go as I walked the streets of ultimo and this skim cappuccino was brilliant. Had a great smooth flavour and brilliant froth even on the slim milk. The food menu looked good to so I'd happily return and try it one day.
Kookaburra
With only two takeaway coffee customers, doesn't seem difficult to not give away our order to someone who came after us, and then not seemingly forget our order indefinitely until we asked for it again. :(
Also kinda gross to see food handlers grabbing people's spoons on the end you eat with and with bare hands, yuck!

Redeeming factor- Coffee is decent tho.

Best Chicken salad I've ever had. Simple, clean, delicious and generous. Partner had the trout with a side of scrambled eggs. Amazingly fresh and eggs were cooked perfect. Can't wait to be back to this place. Bringing more people to try it. Yum!!!

Just came back after this review, a month later, they have changed the menu and the best ever chicken salad now has ingredients like feta and pumpkin and brown rice instead of quinoa. I didn't order it, was disappointed. I don't like feta or want brown rice in my salad. Manager said I could change the ingredients but just not the same. I would loook like a fussy la la if I did that cause it would be like changing 4 main ingredients. Any who, what I did end up ordering was nice, will still return cause of the fresh and yumness of everything, but will miss that salad.
FoodieYim
At first I was quite confused with the setTing of the whole cafe. Looks like a mini food court but it's not? Anyway, their friendly staff was very helpful in inviting us in and settled us in a table. I've tried their Salmon Salad for $16 and my friends had their Wagyu burger. The salad is very refreshing and nice! I really liked it. My friend liked the burger. However, I think the burger is slightly smaller than those served in the Upside and the Penny Lane in UTS.

This food collective consisting of 5 very different offerings is a lovely new space & addition to the newly renovated Broadway shopping centre. It offers a deli, fresh food, bakery, Pizza Mario & Leave it to B. On this occasion, the beautiful array of cakes from Leave it to B caught my eye and it was so difficult to choose. Everything looked beautiful & I chose the classic Lemon Meringue which was sweet yet tangy & had beautiful clouds of meringue on top. The Jasmin has Jasmin tea infused sponge & layers of berry mousse. Its light & fresh. The pastries were also delicious especially the escargot which had a good amount of raisins & custard twisted inside. Next time I will be back for Pizza Mario & some more delectable cakes to take home.
