The attention to detail that this restaurant has is insane. From the service to cutlery and the actual dishes themselves. Very well thought out and executed in a beautiful manner.

The quality of the food is just top notch. Highly recommend the pork katsu and warabi mochi dessert.

Located in Redfern, this restaurant has a sophisticated Japanese vibe to it. Dimly lit, long tables and some seating up at the chefs space. Lovely craftsmanship in the bowls and teapots and the minimalist cafe has a good aura to it. We’ve been eying off Juan bowl for a while now after seeing delicious pics on Instagram. This little restaurant is selling a short menu of savoury don, Japanese for bowl. Essentially these are rice bowls (with your selection of rice) and your topping selection. Some of their offerings include a Hainan Chicken Rice or Wagyu Bowl.

A small and humble Japanese restaurant tucked away in Redfern. We really enjoyed the tonkatsu which was very crispy and light. Their wagyu beef don wasn’t that flavourful even with the sauce so that was a bit disappointing, but it was still good. The matcha tiramisu was delicious with a super smooth and slightly sweetened matcha cream.

I’m 100% satisfied with my experience at Juan last year. Booked online one day ahead for a early dinner on Friday. I ordered the wagyu beef bowl and my mum went with the eel one. Enjoyed both dishes and particularly the wagyu one - best ever had in Sydney. The tea recommended was also a perfect compliment to the dish. Please ensure you save some room for desserts because both of them (matcha tiramisu and mochi) are worth it! Their menu is limited but you will know that everything they put on the menu is made to perfection. Will definitely be back!

Tonkatsu ($23) - 4.5/5
2 hours slow-cooked Bangalow sweet pork tonkatsu, free range scrambled eggs, red cabbage, roasted tomatoes, house apple mustard mayo, miso sesame sauce

First bite into the tonkatsu and wow! Not only was the batter was fluffy and beautifully crispy but most importantly, the pork was perfectly cooked and insanely juicy - definitely the best tonkatsu I've ever had! The pork paired well with the miso sesame sauce which I preferred over the apple mustard mayo. The scrambled eggs were smooth and delicious but I certainly would have liked more of it as there was simply not enough to go with the rice. Despite this minor setback, Juan Bowl & Tea fully deserves this rating as the heavenly tonkatsu certainly speaks volumes about the expertise of the chefs.

This quaint establishment has a warm and earthy feel, drawing upon Japanese roots. There are limited seats so there is often a short wait; it is well worth it though. We had the wagyu bowl which looked like a small portion when it came out but definitely was sufficient. It was nice they had the tea and wine suggestion under each dish. The highlight was definitely the matcha dessert; it was extremely decadent and not too overly sweet but with the right balance of bitterness and sweetness.

Dishes great to look at; good tasting.

Chicken was slightly raw but when I only wanted it cooked a bit more the whole dish was replaced and a refund was issued.

Unexpected but excellent service; happy to know it’s run by good folk! All the best!

Loyal customer signing off 😁

Booked a reservation for 13:30, and definitely glad we did because there were quite a number people waiting for a table. The food came out very quickly, and the staff were kind enough to explain how to best enjoy each dish. Everything was delicious, no faults whatsoever. Personally, the Hainan Chicken was probably the standout dish. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and the sauce complimented it perfectly. The tomatoes and cucumbers were a great way to refresh the palate. I would definitely go again, despite having tried everything already.

There limited main choices but they are all nice! The raw beef with sticky rice are really good and the pork is slow cooked and very special. Don't forget to order a dessert as well. The matcha tiramisu and the warabimochi are MUST. Will definitely go there again.

Great food, relatively small portion sizes, and it is quite pricy. For the price they are charging you’d think they provide a bathroom for customers, but sadly... they dont. Also expected the place to be a bit more grand, e.g. better seatings. But overall, great food.

Dishes are quite delicious with pretty present. Service is good as well. Everything is perfect but I rate four stars. The fifth one is because the place is too small and narrow, and waiters told us to leave after fifteen minutes before we totally finish our dishes. So if they can improve customers time, it will be great.

really nice and delicate food. its a small place, just 3 separate table and 2 big table.
most of the customer come with the booking. and its 1 hour and 15 minutes for the meal.
just four fixed main course ——chicken, port, eel and wagyu beef. the dessert is daily special, the waiter will introduce~
the match tiramisu was really really nice.
each main course match with different tea or u can choose urself~
i love the eel better than the wagyu beef. actually, the beef is fresh with two hours slow cook(raw beef)which i love it but i dont like the galic sauce.

Love this place! Favourite food no.1 in Sydney. Keen to try everything on the menu! The rice is soft but tender and a little bit sweet, the fried pork is crispy but not oily, the meat is also tender, juicy and soft. And the egg on top is silky with a little bit milk taste and just perfect sweetness. Too much else to say but in one word, please do try it!

Went to this restaurant for the first time after seeing the positive reviews, and surely it did not disappoint. I ordered Wagyu (and its matching tea Jin Jun Mei), Unagi Hitsumabushi and Onibi (shochu). As a tea person, the tea was an absolute delight. Onibi was great too as the alcohol was not strong. And for the food, I definitely loved the unagi dish with all the condiments more than the wagyu rice dish, but both of them were wonderful. Would probably come back here again to try the other two dishes or have the unagi dish again.

I was enamoured with the Tonkatsu ($23) ever since I first laid eyes upon it, and knew I had to have it. But it wasn’t the pork that caught my eye – it was the omelette. And it tasted every bit as heavenly as I had imaged, so delicately silky and creamy, forming a sheath to cover the fluffy grains of onion jam-infused rice. But of course, the tonkatsu itself was no slouch. Slow-cooked for 2 hours before being carefully deep-fried in a batter that stayed crisp for the entire meal, the pork was tender, buttery, and rimmed with an indulgent layer of fat just below the crumbing. It was served with two dipping sauces on the side – a distinctly fruity apple mayo, and a surprisingly tangy sesame miso sauce that did wonders to balance out the richness of the meat. This was a monarch amongst pork cutlets.

A tiny eatery with big flavours. Firstly, I really appreciate an authentic Japanese neighborhood restaurant because I’m sick of passionless unauthentic eateries all across Sydney. Staff were really friendly and can speak Japanese for dem weaboos.

Despite the lack of menu selection. The highly refined wagyu donburi makes up for it.

Wagyu donburi - I don’t know whether it is a subtleasiantraits thing but sometimes having just plain soy sauce over rice is very satisfying. Now imagine that with grilled pieces of wagyu beef. Yep, it was delicious and I still reminisce about it right now.

We were late for our booking but were lucky enough to still have our table. The place is quite small but the food was delicious. Staff had nice service and the food came out quite quick too. My only suggestion is if you enjoy matcha, I recommend ordering one instead of sharing as we wanted to order more but they had already ran out.

What a beautiful place! Went here for my mum's birthday and ordered the tonkatsu, Wagyu and unagi bowls. The unagi one was really special- who knew tare and lemon grass would go so well together? The food is also nicely prepared and I could see a lot of heart was put in it. Personally, I found the wagyu a bit bland but that might just be me after having unagi...
Dessert is absolutely scrumptious and I loved both the tiramisu and warabi mochi. I'd visit again.

Made a booking, came in and wait for 10 to 15 minutes to finally been seated. The choice of food was really limited, so we got the Waygu and Tonkatsu, 2 Today's Dessert which we both got the matcha tiramisu and for drinks are peach melba and matcha latte. The peach melba taste like bland water and matcha latte, they separate the honey so you can adjust your level of sweetness. The staff guide us the sauces she put on the table and then the food came out which was super tasty and fulfilling but we can also squeeze the dessert into our other stomach. The matcha tiramisu was really tasty and moist but I rather go to Café Kentaro or Ornatek due to the portion is a bit bigger and price. Overall the food came out quick and my concern most of the time is they need to get extra helping hand just due to it was so pack and not a lot of staff is at the front.

They only do 4 rice bowls at this restaurant so you already know everything is going to be amazing and crafted to perfection.

I had the Wagyu Bowl and my friends had the Tonkatsu and Unagi Bowl. We also ordered their signature Matcha Tiramisu.

The beef is slow cooked to melt in your mouth goodness. Tucked underneath the beef you have some drool-worthy garlic butter rice. Topped with an Onsen egg, you have yourself a wonderful meal bursting with flavour.

The green tea tiramisu is so insanely creamy and smooth. Everything from the sponge to the cream to the dusted powder has the element of matcha incorporated in it. Must order for Matcha lovers.

Pro tip: They don't fo walk-ins so remember to place a reservation before coming.

This place is AMAZING!
My friends and i ordered the 3 different bowls to share (unagi, katsu, wagyu), and each of them was delicious.
Good portion sizes and great flavour. The presentation is quite nice, and the waitress also explained each sauce for each bowl.

We also tried the matcha tiramisu and it was really yummy as well but quitr small.
The menu is limited but they do each menu item so well.

The restaurant is quite small, and i think they only accept bookings so make sure to check before going.

Definitely worth a try.

When entering the store you can see the whole kitchen and the tables in front, With Juan herself cooking as head chef.

I love everything here, the menu is really small because Juan focuses on perfecting every dish on the menu. I was a little iffy ordering the Hai nan chicken bcos most Asian restuarants have it and it’s basic. But It turned out to be my fave out of all the dishes that we ordered, with the wagyu actually being my least favourite.

Dessert here is a must !!!

The restaurant itself is quite small and intimate. And so is their menu, there are only four main dishes and two desserts to choose from. However they have an extensive range of teas.

We pretty much ordered the whole entire menu except for the Unagi Hitsumabushi bowl (the grilled eel bowl).

The mains and drinks were mediocre in my opinion but the two desserts were delicious! The matcha tiramisu was soft and fluffy with the right amount of matcha and sweetness ratio. The black sesame warabi mochi dessert was tasty as well!

Overall the food was okay. I think I’d only come back for their desserts.

I really really enjoyed the bowls and tea we had here!

Wagyu bowl – MUST MUST try! 10/10

Katsu bowl – 9/10

I am a bit a health nut, so I opted for the brown rice in one of the bowls. Although it was very nice, the white rice is soo much better! There is something about the grain of rice, and the way it is cooked. It’s amazing!!

Also had the black sesame mocha dessert to finish off, only down side.. The serving was too small. I would have liked much larger bowl of this haha getting greedy!

I will definitely revisit, for the chiggen bowl!!

Juan Bowl & Tea is a pleasing little restaurant. It’s pleasing to the eye, and, using a simple idea and refreshingly concise menu, it proves equally as pleasing to the palate. The strong, visual impact of the 28-seater Redfern restaurant comes from the juxtaposition of a soft grey bamboo forest mural running down one side of the space, and a wall of wooden panels set at alternating depths with lit with recessed lighting, running down the other. The straight lines of the bamboo are echoed in the wooden screens both behind and below the cement bar, where you place, and pay for, your order. With such a small number of seats, it’s advisable to book, which must be done electronically, as they offer no phone number. You’ll partake of your donburi - Japanese rice bowl - sitting on...

Juan Bowl & Tea is refined, understated yet casual, doing a few things and doing them very well, with the level of attention to detail you’d expect in an authentic Japanese eatery. It’s an intimate space so I wouldn’t attempt going without a reservation - a fair few disappointed souls were turned away during the course of our meal.

We went on a Sunday for a late lunch and it was full, with the kitchen staff pumping out order after order with military-like precision. The Tonkatsu is a multi-faceted, perfectly engineered dish, plated thoughtfully and elegantly. Dining there is a lovely, peaceful experience. Can’t wait to go back!

Small little cafe located in redfern. They have very limited seats and it can get very busy, so make sure you book in advanced or come in early. We went on a weekday, with a reservation and within an hour it was already full. We ordered the katsu and wagyu. The katsu came with a small side serving of the sauce and mayonnaise. My only concern, is that the sauce portion is tiny and not enough for the amount of katsu you get to dip it in. The katsu was cooked perfectly, it was crispy and tasty. The egg and rice also accompanied the katsu very well.

The wagyu was smaller than the katsu, but the meat was tender and not overly chewy. It also came with a side of sauce, and a small portion of the rice. We had the match tiramisu for dessert and oh boy.. I don’t like tiramisu, so i was glad that this dessert, you could not taste it. The matcha was not bitter at all! Infact, it is a really creamy matcha cake. Not spongey at all, but very smooth. It was very refreshing. The service here is fairly quick! And price range is decent. Would definitely recommend and come back to try more on their menu!!

Just like the name, the menu is simple. Bowls-main courses, the famous ones are Wagyu and Tonkatsu. My hubby and I both chose Tonkatsu. For me it is because I watched The Solitary Gourmet, which is a very famous food drama in Japan. When I was watching it, I just couldn’t wait having the Tonkatsu. After studied some of the restaurants in Sydney, I chose to come here.

The rice is very special here, I strongly recommend the Koshihikari rice, which is the most classic and historic rice in Japan, you should try it. And for Tonkatsu, this rice is a perfect match, instead of grain rice, from my point of view.

When it comes to the pork tonkatsu, since it is slow-cooked, you will find it juicy, not dry, and definitely crispy outside. However, I am quite disappointed with the sauce. Maybe it is because of the Japanese drama. Here in Juan, the pork served with apple mustard mayo (to tell the truth, I couldn’t tell the apple flavour), Miso sesami sauce; however, in Japan, there is a special sauce for pork tonkatsu , spicy miso, also a slice of lemon will be served with salt and wasabi of course. I am sorry to be a little bit picky, I just feel it will be better if there are more sauce options. But generally I am quite happy with my food.

It is very special here, since every bowl has its matching tea and wine or beer. I ordered my matching tea-organic lemon myrtle, not bad. Next time I would like to try the mango green or lychee red.

We also tried the famous mocha tiramisu, the mocha is quite strong, I like it, not very sweet, we both enjoyed it.

There is one thing I don’t like about Juan, too crowded. Even reserved first, you have to wait till the time slot(even there are empty tables there, and we were only 15 minutes earlier). When it is our time, we have to share a long table with other people, it almost 3:00, still many people coming, and they even want us 5 people to sit on one side, I have to leave my bag on the floor. I am quite disappointed about the experience.

Generally speaking, food is good. We will come back again, but we definitely want a separate table next time.

My friend and I were lucky enough to have lunch here without a reservation. We went in at 12:05 and the restaurant was already full.

I never knew that matching teas were a thing, so I got the wagyu bowl with the jin jun mei tea. The staff here really are masters of their craft because the tea had an astringent/citrusy quality that cut through the fattiness of the wagyu, garlic butter rice and soft boiled egg yolk. I was very sad when I finished the bowl, however it was the perfect amount that got me full and surprisingly kept me full until dinner time.

Even my friend - an avid tea hater - enjoyed how her tea complemented her unagi hitsumabushi. The houjicha dashi that accompanied it was perfect in diluting the saltiness of the dish. Being a big fan of eel, she said that the amount and quality of eel that you get is very worth the $28 and is exactly like the eel she had in Japan.

I can’t wait to return here and try everything else.

Definitely met my high expectations! From the nice and cosy vibe of the restaurant to the excellent service and food, I was very impressed. We were lucky enough to score a seat without booking but due to the size of the place, I definitely recommend giving them a call and booking in advance.

The menu is quite small but it was perfect for indecisive people like us. We had the wagyu and tonkatsu bowl and paired them with the matching tea that they suggest on the menu. The wagyu and tonkatsu were both cooked to perfection. Although portion size is small considering the price, we found it to be just the right amount, leaving us not too full to enjoy the desserts.

We had the matcha tiramisu and the Warabi Mochi for dessert. The tiramisu did not disappoint as other reviews had suggested. We were pleasantly surprised with the Mochi dessert and ended up liking it more than the matcha dish.

All in all, I really enjoyed my time at Juan and will definitely be back to try other dishes!

Amazing food and lovely service! We ordered the Hainan Chicken and the Wagyu Bowl (with the tea that compliments this dish) and I can honestly say that this place makes the most tender chicken and one of the best Tonkatsu in Sydney (which I've had before but isn't pictured). The Wagyu Bowl is delicious and tender. I have nothing bad to say about Juan, but as a student, the price point is on the more expensive end. The dessert I ordered afterwards would not be something I'd order again (it was presented in a flat bowl and didn't taste that nice), but would definitely visit again for the mains!

There’s no shortage of good Japanese restaurants in Sydney, but if you’re looking for something that’s a little different to the standard sushi and ramen, you’ve got to check out Juan Bowl & Tea. It’s a tiny space, decked out in a simple, wooden Japanese style decor, complete with bamboo forest patterned wallpaper. Just make sure you book in advance because the place fills up real quick. And it’s not hard to see why!

You’ll want to try their tonkatsu, to experience firsthand the incredibly moist and tender pork fillet. The golden panko crust is light and crispy and although not oily, the fresh veggies go well to compliment the crumb.

Juan Bowl & Tea or just ‘Juan’ for short is a 28-seat cafe located in the heart of Redfern. Its specialty lies in its rice bowl called ‘don’ and its tea, as depicted in its name. This place has been very highly rated over social media lately and I have finally given it a try. It is highly recommended that you reserve a table before going there.

The restaurant itself gives off such an authentic Japanese vibe, as though you're dining in Tokyo! We decided to try two of their most famous dishes - Wagyu Bowl & Tonkatsu Bowl. The beef is so soft and flavoursome, works very well with the onsen egg as you break it and mix into the rice. Definitely unlike anything I have ever tried before! The Tonkatsu Bowl is also very well made if you're not a fan of beef.

For drinks we decided to get Jin Jun Mei (as suggested to be paired with the Wagyu Bowl) and the Hojicha. I personally think that it is perfect to drink some hot tea while tasting their rice bowls.

For desserts, of course we had to order the Matcha Tiramisu! It definitely did not disappoint, but just a heads up, do not underestimate the portion of it as it is full or cream after all. The other dessert we tried was their Warabi Mochi, super delicious and honestly no negative comments on it at all!

This is a small restaurant with some tables already reserved so try to come 10-15 min prior to start of service. There is a select number of mains to choose from; we opted for the wagyu beef and Hainanese chicken. The dishes and sauces were thoughtfully presented in beautiful ceramics. Flavours were restrained, which allowed us to appreciate the quality of the ingredients. The Haianese chicken is an excellent example of this: a Japanese reinterpretation of an international dish. I particularly liked the desserts: matcha tiramisu and black sesame mochi. Both were savoury so I didn’t feel so overwhelmed with sweetness. Note: table service is a bit unusual (you have to order at the bar) but the staff were still quite attentive, and service was timely.

Wagyu and unagi dons were yummy however I was very disappointed at finding only three small pieces of unagi in my bowl! At $28, I would have expected a normal if not generous portion of unagi! Otherwise, the matching teas were lovely and fragrant. The matcha tiramisu was beautiful with a nice strong matcha flavour. Be warned the restaurant is quite small and at times cramped, and the menu only has four savoury options.

My fave was the tonkotsu with the crispy batter and perfectly cooked omelette. My friend thoroughly enjoyed the unagi dish which was interesting to eat because you poured a Hojicha broth over it. Flavours were spot on! Although every dish was on the expensive side (expect to pay ~$8-9 for a pot of tea), you really do see the labour and effort put into all the finer details to make your experience go the extra mile. Loved the ambience and interiors, and perfect for couples on their first date. If you’re able to wait patiently for a table (and food) and you don’t mind squishing up next to other diners then I would highly recommend coming here.

Coming from Oriental background, I look for high standard Japanese restaurants over the world. With no doubt Juan has become one of my favourite Japanese restaurants.

Juan is cozy, clean and modern; service is attentive and polite. The menu is small but they do each of the items to perfection. We had the Wagyu rice, Unagi (eel) rice and black sesame mochi. I’m not going to write too much about each of the dishes, since they will give you a pleasant surprise - come try them yourself!

Already planning to come back for another bowl of rice and the famed matcha tiramisu.

Japanese cuisine has always been our favourite. I mean, sushi, sashimi, matcha, donburi and stuff like that, seriously, I need a whole night to list them all out. Scouring Sydney foodies Instagrams and we found tons of B-E-AUTIFUL and drool-worthy pictures from JUAN where donburi seems to be a serious business. And hell yes, they did what they promised to deliver. Flavours were spot on, even though the portions didn’t happen to be quite large. Sharing three between two would be nice (sign, we should have done so. Yep, regretting now!).

We ordered the Wagyu and the Tonkatsu dons. The Wagyu don was immaculately presented and the soft egg was really soft. However, the dish as a whole was slightly bland without the addition of the onion sauce. The tonkatsu was quite standard and similar to what you could get for a much lower price. The portion of the tonkatsu was quite large and the apple mayo was very tasty. The dish excelled in your ability to control the flavour through the addition of the sauce. The sakura matcha tiramisu was very soft and not too sweet, which was really good.

The interior is minimalistic and super aesthetic. The staff are very nice, but make sure you book in advance to ensure a seat!

I love everything Japanese, especially Japanese food. This is a cozy, quaint shop tucked in one of the Redfern streets, best to make prior reservations. I love menus like this, where they pair the dish with a recommended tea flavour. We ordered the wagyu and the eel options, both tasted pretty good. We also tried the matcha tiramisu which was highly recommended. I look forward to coming back to try other dishes!
