A very delicious and new experience. The Malaysian flavours in the food are very yummy and great for something different. Will definitely be recommending this place!
So glad I finally tried this cafe! Unique yet lovely Malaysian flavours and ingredients made into interesting breakfast and lunch favourites. The pork floss French toast was really tasty, although the Cuban sandwich was a tad dry. Will definitely come back and try other items on the menu!
Love the kaya toast with eggs! Very authentic...I've been looking for a good kaya toast here in sydney and finally found it. Price isn't too bad either.
Cafe Rumah is offereing a pretty cool concept: coffee, Malaysian treats and great menās clothes.
I had coffee here a few times before I finally tried one of their treats. My god: what was I missing? They made the madeleines on the spot, freshly baked for you, and then some coconut jam, kawa, piped in the middle...

The Tiny Fish says: "Delicious, inventive Malay-inspired menu in a bright, cosy setting in Surry Hills."
Food: Absolutely stunning. My prawn toast was crispy on the outside and billowy on the inside, while the congee was tasty and warming. The fresh madeleines are made upon order, and the kaya jam is a divine accompaniment. Big portion sizes.
Service: Sweet as a peach.
Atmosphere: natural light warms the minimal, cosy space.

My favorite Malaysian inspired food cafe 2016-2017 by far
You will find food here is very pretty presented and also very comforting.
Me and my friends came and ordered food as posted bellow.
Well, when the food came out... our hungry eyes are wide opened, and as usual, my iPhone7 snapping the dish first.
The pork Belly bowl is just perfect for tour of Asian Brunch!
Meat are cut chunks, proportion of fat and meat are just perfect!
Coconut Custard is IG worthy snapping pictures, pretty well presented, and taste super good!
Coffee Rumah was served cold, mixture of gula Melaka and hint of coconut milk you can find in a mix.
Will come back for the Laksa!
We had the Madeleines, the Tom Yum chicken congee, the Asian Cuban and the rumah special, and they were all really tasty. The standouts were the congee which was really flavourful and the rumah special which is kind of a fizzy Bandung drink that was a unique take on the traditional Malaysian/Singaporean drink.
Its a cosy, small cafe that is easily accessible and the staff was friendly too.
Definitely worth a go!
Went to Cafe Rumah for lunch and had the Tom Yum Chicken Congee and it was delicious and one of the best meals I have had this year. The dish was packed with flavour and comes with poached chicken, wood ear mushroom, shallot, chilli, ginger, crispy rice vermicelli and a perfectly cook onsen egg that the yolk just oozed out of. The portion size was decent but I couldn't help but order the freshly baked madeleines with house made Kaya. The madeleines took 15 minutes and were served hot straight out of the oven and melted in my mouth with a perfect Kaya filled centre. I love the Singaporean influence and I can't wait to go back next weekend and try other items on the menu but I just don't know if I will be able to go past the Tom Yum Chicken Congee.
Underrated treasure in lower Surry Hills. I keep coming back for the Tom Yum Congee, toasted sandwiches (brisket + cheese), pork belly rice and fresh juices. One of the most inventive menus in Sydney right now, I don't know where else you would find modern Malaysian/Singaporean.
The owner of the cafe is very friendly and the layout of the cafe is quite cosy. There's street parking nearby. The special dish, Ipoh Cheung fun was amazingly good. I took some kuih away. It was authentic. Overall an enjoyable experience.
Love coming here for brunch because the food are unique and unlike other brunch places in sydney.
Ordered the tomyum congee, ipoh cheung fan and kaya toast. The tomyum congee was very unique because it has a tomyum taste to it, and tastes very good. The toppings compliments the congee nicely.
The ipoh cheng fan was also very good but portion may be too small. Everything in this plate was very yummy.
The kaya toast was also very yummy.
Nonetheless, everything was very delicious, will definitely be back for more.
Had Mama Yang's Pork Belly Rice Bowl
& The JB Special.
Was roaming around and came accords this little cosy cafe located in Surry Hills. Half boutique, half cafe. Delicious Malaysian fusion food with various kuih and cakes. Also, service and staff was on point šš»
Definitely coming back!
Rumah is in a spot we usually just drive by, so I was pleasantly surprised to walk into this pared back high ceilinged space.
We had the Candi bacon and egg on French toast and the Kaya toast with slow Cooked eggs. All good. Coffee mild but decent.
A well done spot.
Cafe Rumah is a cute cafe in Surry Hills. Arriving on a weekday for brunch and we were the only table.
The menu is interesting Asian fusion with a Malaysian twist. Mama Yang's Pork Belly Bowl ($18) has such intense flavour and the pork was so tender. I was not sure about Tom Yum Chicken Congee ($15) but it was perfect for a rainy spring day as a comfort food.
A little disappointed since they didn't have kuih lapis (steamed layer cakes) available during my visit. But the Madeleines with Kaya does sounds interesting!
We really enjoyed our meal at Cafe Rumah and would recommend you give it a try too if you are in the neighbourhood.
there's something about freshly baked Madeleines, and hats off to cafe rumah for cooking it to order (they warn you about a 15 min wait) had an order of 5 kaya madeleines (5 for $8) & a pressed juice. a good place to stop and have a break
The cafe has a clothing shop inside! Making the interior lovely and unique. The food is also very delicious. I ordered the Kaya Madelines and it is heavenly. They made it homemade and it is freshly made. One of my favorite indeed!
How do you fit fashion as well as food with a Malay twist under one roof? Ask Rumah.Ā
When someone says āMalay foodā, my rendang radar goes through the roof!
Those who know me are aware that I will skip a merry mile for food that reminds me of my childhood. One of the (many) great things about growing up in Singapore is the exposure to the variety of food. In Singapore this means Malaysian, Indian, Indonesian, Chinese or a combination of any of these.
Even though the owners are Malaysian, the menu is more broadly āAsian inspiredā. It consists of a few Malay (e.g. Roti John, Mama Yangās pork Belly bowl), a few Malay-inspired (Isaan salad) and also some international dishes inspired by Rizsal travels (Brisket sandwich). And yet, the Roti John has the desired :āoh-my-god-it-has-the-flavours-of-home-I-look-for-all-my-lifeā effect. #sogood. It comes as loose ground beef flavoured with onion, egg and spices between a soft bun. Rumah make their own chilli sauce and add a squeeze of mayonnaise. Those flavours really hit all my buttons. (Itās also a great hangover cure!)

After reading Chocolate Suze's post about the Bak Kwa French Toast, I just had to make tracks to Cafe Rumah ASAP. And so last weekend we rushed over just before it closed at 4pm and managed to sneak in an order for a serving of french toast and a coffee. Lucky we came at that time because the cafe itself isn't very large and so doesn't have much seating if it was during a peak period.
Tidy and minimalist joint which is a refresh. Service is friendly and efficient. The coffee is solid. There fare is Malaysian, with a twist. Its an appealing menu but ley me say, that Roti John (spiced mince beef & egg) is flavour country! The brioche bun is exceptional and caramelised onion the exclamation mark.

Cafe Rumah opened in February, up on the quieter end of Surry Hills (opp Bar H and next door to Wild Rover) with a Malaysian fusion menu and I excitedly stalked their Instagram account when I saw their menu hadĀ Kopitiam Kaya Toast ($7) withĀ Onsen Eggs ($4).
Came to Cafe Rumah in Surry Hills, inspired by cool sweet pics Id seen on Instagram. It's a little Malaysian cafe but store fit out / decor is pretty trendy, typical new sydney cafe style. Concrete flooring, wooden tables and very inviting from outside.
The menu is quite different, it has onsen eggs on toast, roti burgers, cured salmon and soy, a pork belly bowl special as well as the typical granola, Banana bread and toast. There's also Malaysian sweets to buy, very cool!
They do a range of coffees and special iced drinks and cold pressed drinks.
I ordered a 'coconut' latte simply because it sounded different and "our roti john" which is a brioche bun with minced beef, onion and chilli sauce with a fried egg - delicious!!!! I also got take away pandan cake : green cake, how cool is that. Light and fluffy, very nice.
The employees were lovely, particularly the front of House lady who answered all my questions as I had no idea what the descriptions of things were.
Great new place to add to your cafe list.
I love this unassuming little cafe in Surry Hills and ended up visiting for brunch two consecutive weeks. The menu is short and sweet while the food is Asian fusion with a Malaysian bent. Highlights of the mains were the Roti John (brioche roll with spicy beef mince and a sunny side up egg with plenty of yolkp0rn); the Asian Cuban sandwich with roast pork and spam (don't knock it till you've tried it), the Isaan salad (yes, that tangy in-your-face dressing is so appetising) and the kaya (coconut jam). The homemade kaya is a rich but not overly sweet spread and makes an appearance as part of the kopitiam brekky, and also piped into petite madeleines. Special mention goes to the French toast with candied bacon, which was the special of the day - it was pretty damn good on our first visit but didn't quite reach the same lofty heights during our second as the bacon wasn't sufficiently caramelized. We managed to squeeze in some sweet treats after our feast: the kuih bingka and pandan chiffon cake were a nostalgic throwback to the flavors of home. So needless to say, they were the real deal. My skim cappuccino was well-made though I wasn't a fan of the Cabarito beans. But there's always a Milo dinosaur as an alternative and they'll even add a shot of espresso on request. The staff are great and super friendly. Definitely a neighborhood gem.
I came specifically for the kaya madeleines, so can't really comment on the food food. Will definitely return to try lunch one day. I'm also keen to try the kaya toast with eggs too. The madeleines however were fantastic. It's freshly baked - cooked to order so they tell you up front there is a 15 min wait. Though it didn't take quite that long. It came out piping hot and smelling amazing. Texturally, very appealing. Light and quite airy. Fabulous tasting cake on its own but then you get the kaya jam and the taste is elevated. Loved this. The perfect snack or dessert. Coffee is made with Cabrito beans. It was nice but not great.
Sandwich prices range from an affordable $10 to a āstill-okayā $15 depending on the filling. From memory, the options arenāt particularly Malaysian-sounding. I part dollars for this particular sanga I love a good egg and watercress combination. The egg salad is milky and delicious with chunks of hard boiled egg overflowing between bread. It could stand a bit more curry flavour in it for it to qualify as a curried egg sandwich. The bread is quite fantastic, an error on my part for not enquiring where itās from. Apologies for the poor photo.
Food is pleasant and inexpensive. I think the Roti John is by far the best value at $9, it's a fat roll stuffed with egg, onions, beef and all kinds of crazy chilli and mayo sauce tasting pretty similar to what I know from home. The avocado toast was standard cafe fare but I think it's a good staple to have. My egg sandwich was an affordable $10, utilising some really awesome bread (forgot to ask where they got it from!) and a savoury egg salad paired off with watercress. On a hot day, I'd say go for the JB special which is blackcurrant and soda drink going for $6.
Relaxing place, not too packed on a Saturday lunch time. Food options were great, service overall okay. Music not too annoying but choice could be better!
We had the special that day of baked chicken with soup ($19) and traditional Singaporean breakfast of kaya toast with soft cooked eggs ($12.50). Overall taste was great but I felt serving of the baked chicken was a tad too small for what we paid.
Would try the sweets next time. Thanks for the lovely meal!
Oh Wow, takes me back to my childhood. Food memories awakened by skilfully putting a modern take on Malay cuisine with skill and creativity. Every dish impresses you. Great work team.šš
This little cute cafƩ is hidden away from the busy area of Surry Hills.
Iām glad I found it! The food menu looked amazing.
I ordered āTHE KOPITIAM BREKKIEā which also had 2 poach eggs. It included Kaya toast, very crispy and delicious, I dipped it into the runny poached egg, and it tasted so heavenly š„°š¤¤
This is what I had in Singapore for breakfast! So good!!!! š„Ŗš„Ŗ
The coffee was also amazing! The food and coffee was quality.
The service was very quick and friendly. Next time I will return for something different ā¤ļø
Itās only a 5-10 minutes walk from Central train station, very easy to find.
I paid $17.68 for my meal + the double shot soy latte.
Definitely a good cafƩ to check out!
We ordered the tomyum chicken congee, mama yangās pork belly rice and kopitiam brekkie. The food is lovely! In love with kopitiam brekkieš„ŗ will definitely come back for more!
Havenāt been back to this cafe since yelp and zomato timeš.
Iāve decided to re visit this cafe, for late lunch, and ordered from special board āclay pot ā with tapioca noodle, prawns, fish cakes, onsen egg and also pork lards.
Love everything on this dish and the crunchiness of small dice pork lards was unbelievably amazing!
And to beat this gloomy Sydney weather, I ordered ācold buster teaā orange, ginger, turmeric, honey and lemon.
It was a soul warmer drink!

From last Visit, a while ago.

Finally got chance to try this cafe with my sister.
The lady owner welcomed us and described some special for today and the best selling on the menu.
I was sold when she describe the buttermilk pancake..
We could decide what else to try... Then again she convince us with mama yang's pork belly bowl.. It's a family secret recipes she said!
Done, we order that dish, please! You won't regret it, she said!
Well, the dishes come out, and you know what .. Our hungry eyes are open wide and my iPhone's out snapping pictures of the dishes our ordered.
As pretty as it presented, the dishes are super good!
I'm telling you, the rice bowl are perfect for type of "Asian" brunch, because it's a little heavy with the rice involved. I'm telling you, the braised pork belly are tender and presented with a little bite size tender chunk meats, and proportion fat and meat are just perfect!
On top of that the sprinkle with lots of "bawang goreng" ( fried red onion). Happy me!
The buttermilk pancakes ( serve 3) were delicious too, served with braised banana in coconut milk and served with sprinkle shaven coconut flakes, and hint of lime to counter the richness and sweetness from Gila Malaka, that they used in braising liquid.
Would love to come back if I'm craving for Kaya and toast Malaysian style!
Great twist on the Australian cafe experience. To be fair there were a lot of dishes that weren't to my breakfast tastes but I admire the attempt to do something different. I'll come back for lunch one time to try the Lamb shank special which looked incredible. Great coffee too.
I like the Malaysian-western fusion cafe concept, in a cosy cafe setting / minimalist clothing shop. The foodās delicious & serving size reminds me of what one gets back in Asia, which is not too much, just right. Look forward to their Specials, which they update regularly. The Laksa Rumahās decent, but thatās because iāve had better version elsewhere. The Pandan Cakeās nice, light & just sweet enough. Yum!
Cute little cafe hidden from the busy area of Surry Hills selling Malaysian/ Singapore Brunch. Their Nonya kuih are really authentic the fragrance, flavours and texture is there in all their kuih. I love their Tom Yum Chicken Congee & their Mee pok is pretty good. A good place to satisfy your craving for some comfort Malaysian/SIngapore Hawker food in cafe setting.
