Such a hidden treasure!
If you’re keen on searching a building for a secret bar then this one is right up your alley!
Lovely bar with lots d greenery and a lengthy menu. Really nice staff who will make you any drink under the sun...would highly recommend!!
Great bar that's hidden away on the top level of an old building. We were there during the day, so there were no issues with line ups or anything like that. I really enjoyed the cocktails, sometimes with these bars the atmosphere is cool but the drinks not so great. I have to say though Old Mates place ticked both boxes. Really cool set up, and great cocktails. I recommend 'The Lady Killer', very refreshing cocktail. The roof top seemed to be the popular location, which is where we were, but I have to say the ambience and set up downstairs was also very relaxed, and I would have happily sat there and enjoyed some drinks. Overall positive experience, good drinks, cool bar, and I must say some of the friendliest bar staff I have come across in Sydney.
Because Sydney doesn’t have enough speakeasies, we’ve been gifted another. In true prohibition style, this hard-to-find bar requires some orienteering skills to uncover. After navigating a boring office building foyer, grab the lift to level four. Then on the other side of a nondescript door is an adorable alcoholic wonderland.
Split over two levels, downstairs you drink your poison of choice in an ornate, candlelit, leafy library. But head up the stairs and you’ll find a rooftop bar that offers some pretty jaw-smackingly good views of the city skyline. There’s also a small food menu of snacky things like cheese, charcuterie and cheese steaks.
There’s a lot to like about the place owned by old mate.
Best bar staff and beverages in Sydney. I'd even go so far as to suggest it will soon become a must visit destination on the world bar scene. Ask for a cocktail, a beer or even about your favourite spirit, these guys can do it all.
It is a great venue for a summer evening. Simple menu and stunning rooftop. I could spend days here grazing stars and drinking vino on a summer evening. Didn't take any pics but you have to see it to believe it.
Pretty happy with this place. We will be back I’m sure. Good range, reasonably priced compared to other city locations. Cocktails were good. Lots of other options, too. Staff were friendly and organised. Rooftop location was nice, indoor bookcase styled space like “old mates place” had a great decor and vibe.
Loving this speakeasy bar! The style/deco and atmosphere takes you to a different world. The highlight is how friendly and joyful the lady who served us was! Truly refreshing. Rare to have incredible staff like this. OH and delicious cocktails! 🔥🍹
Fantastic hidden bar. Well worth checking out. We killed some time here in the bar while it was wet. Cocktail list is amazing. They make the food for their cocktails themselves as well. Staff are friendly and love to have a chat.
Fantastic hidden bar with a roof terrace. Very cool interior. Finding the place was a challenge, totally worth it. The address, google maps, and the mail box were helpful. Beautiful cocktails! Had a lot of fun. The staff were really friendly, and just good craic tbh. Would recommend. There's even a lift up if needed
Amazing bar with a sus location but it transports you to one of the most hidden gems in Sydney!
Drinks: 5 / 5 stars
Service: 5 / 5 stars
Vibe: 4.5 / 5 stars
Cocktails ACTUALLY TASTE NICE! My favourite is It Takes Two To Mango. The Pina Colada is something special and a great shout for special guests haha. The Pandan cocktail was also also.
Service was very open and nonjudgemental. Attentive to requests as well and up for a good conversation anytime.
Since it's a rooftop bar, it is a hidden gem at its finest! Although, I highly recommend not going on peak times since you won't be able to find a seat or any good spots. I've been here twice at non peak times and still got seats that were not exactly comfortable. I will come back to finally chill at the group seats! LOL. A little goal of mine for this place.
How To Get There:
Walk at Clarence St and find a sign that says "Video Game Bar". It's on the side where The Lobo is at. Walk up the little stars and go to the last level in the elevators. And the door should be on your left. I know, very very sus. I wouldn't recommend it as a first date unless you wanna flex how much you know the cities. :/
Come through for some of the best tasting cocktails and best vibes in Sydney. All the drinks are amazing and all the staff have the coolest names and best chat!!! Always a vibe and a rooftop bar included! How do U beat that!!! Many many fond returns!
A group of us had a few drinks here. Getting here was a bit tricky and when I got off the elevator, I was convinced I was in the wrong building or floor. Just in case, I opened the door that didn't have any clear sign, and voilà! That was the right door leading into the low light bar with booth type seats along the wall. Quaint cool little place indeed! We enjoyed a few rounds of cocktails and beers with their cheese platter with olives and slices of Ham. I was told there's outdoor seating area as well.
No sign on the street, but up to level 4 at 199 Clarence St and you will be pleasantly surprised with this smaller bar and up stairs terrace, with huge atmosphere and fantastic service.
