Looking to escape 2017 and head back in time? Well Gertude and Petunias can do that for you, with their retro English/Parisian themed café with large chandeliers, mirrors and artwork on the walls and big English teacups it makes you almost think you are in living in one of Jane Austin books. Coupled with classical music all that's missing is snow outside and you would think you were in a movie.
The service is very personal due to the size of the premises. Seating only up to 10-15 inside and another 5-10 outside, there is only need for 2 people to serve. When ordering, the prices are very competitive and the portions are more than generous . We grabbed the parmesan and truffle eggs and the bacon and banana French toast, both devoured in minutes. The café has a limited range but what they do offer they excel at and has become a local hero for the residents of Kensington.

The first thing you notice about this rather delightful old charm cafe is the look about it, setup to look like a traditional high tea establishment.
The Service was personal and great with attention to detail upon my visit. The food was good and was pleasing to say the least, big positions always please
Gertrude and Petunias is in a good location on Todman avenue, easy to spot and get a carpark out the front. It feels like a French/Parisian antique cafe with cute chairs and trinkets. Selling pastries, coffees, toasted sandwiches, quiches and pies (some pretty interesting options like pulled pork). You can also order eggs etc to eat in. I got a chai latte which was really nice and a berry cake. Easy breakfast and the lady was really nice and provided quick service.
First time visit to this sweet little corner cafe with retro decor and friendly service. Had a nice Cappuccino ($3.50) made with Campos Coffee. Seems like a cute local gem and spotted a few nice cakes on display. I'd go back again for maybe one of their vanilla slices.
Gertrude & Petunias is a quaint little cafe oozing charm. The menu is varied and covers a range of tastes. Service was super fast and very friendly. Food was tasty and well priced. Nice little cafe all round!
Vintage looking cafe
Strong coffee
Tasty sandwich
Wonderful staff who cares enough to cut in half our order because she figured out that we are sharing
Definitely coming back!
Simple with quaint French decor. Basic food choices but the flavours are great. They knew how not to burn the green tea with boiling water.
Not a lot of variety in terms of food but cosy and quaint and good quality. The food they do have is interesting and freshly prepared. Great variety of coffee, outdoor seating, and a charming, vintage inspired vibe.
A great place for a coffee and food. The bacon and egg roll is superb - soft bread and perfect onion relish. All food is made on site and an amazing array of wraps, cookies, cakes and brownies to feast on. Coffee is excellent and always made with a smile :). The cafe has some seating outside which is ideal to watch the world go by. The place can get busy during the peak morning period but we’ve always had great service here. Definitely worth a visit to sample the food, coffee and atmosphere.
Lovely Cafe, tucked away in a quiet area of Kensington, oozing with the charm you might expect in a European parlour and playing slow, soothing jazz
The menu is great for brunch, featuring an all day breakfast and light lunch options - try their turmeric latte with honey
I love this place, I really like the coffee, it’s always delicious and it’s close to where I live so extra convenient for me.
The decor and set up of the shop is warm and friendly, it’s a cute boutique coffee shop in the suburbs. I do have to say though sometimes the place gets very busy, and the staff get overwhelmed (as you would expect from a good coffee shop) they do sometimes drop the ball with orders coming out at different times, I have seen customers get angry/cross when orders are getting out before theirs. The wait time can be a little longer than normal when it’s busy but that’s expected however, most locals like myself do look past it because the coffee is always made sufficiently and with love, so I personally don’t mind waiting that extra time.
The staff are always friendly and welcoming the owner is hard working and always smiles, her sister or daughter who works there is always lovely and welcoming additionally the Asian lady on the weekend is always amazing, she always make me smile and she makes the coffees on point. However, I find the older lady there struggles a lot, the 3 times I’ve ordered from her directly she always get the order wrong, so I get weary when she’s working, I’ve also seen customers in the same position, I’m not sure if it’s the language barrier but she’s needs proper training or not be in a customer facing role. I’ve seen customers get very mad at her, I feel
sorry for her because she’s definitely trying.
The food is nice and fresh, I recommend the bacon and egg roll with BBQ sauce you can’t go wrong. A shame about covid because eating in is a nice experience but hopefully one day it will go back to normal.
Really recommend, you must go to this place.
