Review Sunflower Cafe - Sydney

Delicious and perfect food. In house made dumplings are plump, fresh and so tasty and some of the best I've had. Don't forget to ask for the home made chilli. Service is polite and professional in a clean and comfy space. A weekly go to for our office. I can highly recommend.

We had the seafood banquet. The food is okay to my taste. Nothing particularly stood out. Perhaps the beef main was the most to my liking. The scallop was a bit chewy. I liked the Competition Grade Oolong Tea.

Service was friendly however the food was largely sub-par. None of the dishes tasted authentic and presentation was not great either. Definitely did not taste authentic Asian, let alone Taiwanese. Got the $72pp banquet - best dish was probably the crispy chicken bites. Beef pancake was a bit strange and pork belly was too sweet. Ginger shallot chicken tasted as bland as it looked.. Dumplings also tasted store-bought unfortunately. Lovely staff but overpriced, inauthentic Asian food.

We had dinner at this restaurant before going to a musical. The food was very delicious, especially the prawns & scallops. The ambience/ atmosphere was great, cozy and elegant. The mochi cake for dessert wasn’t as good as I thought, but overall loved the experience.

Sadly, I couldn’t take any photos of the great dinner experience. We ordered the shared entree, the rib eye and chicken with sprouts (I believe) as mains and it was all delicious. The waiters took really good care of us and made sure all went smoothly. 10/10 recommended and will definitely be going back.

Excellent authentic Taiwanese food! So glad we finally visited. Lovely service and attentive staff with a calming and relaxing environment. Highly recommend the banquet for 3 people and you must have the tender beef! Good food portions and be careful not to over order :) Will be back.

We dined with Muriel and the team again on Saturday 2/4 and, unsurprisingly, we were blown away again by the service, atmosphere and the food. We had the banquet and every dish that was served was fresh, with beautiful flavours. The meal was bountiful and the wine we chose was an equal match for the meal. This restaurant is highly recommended for any occasion - romantic, business or family celebration, all you have to do is book and be amazed.

We always love coming here and on a cold Tuesday night this week we were not disappointed. Warm and welcoming Muriel and her team are marvellous. All the food is delicious, the dumplings, crispy bean curd roll stuffed with chicken mince & water chestnuts are consistent favourites amongst many others, and of course always the pork belly. A new dish of braised cabbage with bacon bits was a hit too. Don't usually have room for dessert but this time winter appetites were able to fit in rice cakes and house made ice cream. So yummy and a good choice of reasonably priced wines. So lucky to have this restaurant in our 'hood. Tkyu Muriel, Lorraine & George.

I've eaten here more times than I can count and everything I've tried it great! My favourite would be the stewed pork belly on noodles with cucumber, yum!!!! The ginger pork noodle soup is great too as is the ginger pork with rice. Simple, delicious fare, no fuss service and a good price. Love it!

As a Taiwanese, it enables me to taste local and tasteful Taiwanese food even in Foreign country. Every time, when I come to city, it's my first choice to have lunch.
Amanda Tian
I would like to recommend the beverages, you can have a lower price with food. Take away is also a good choice. The food is served quickly but the fried pork is not what I expected coz it’s not hot and without too much flavour.

Quick and gente service, generous and tasty portions. All MFG free. I've had the beef braised noodle soup and both the meat and veggies tasted great, and i could not finish the huge portion they brought!

The Sunflower Taiwanese restaurant is extremely popular among students because they offer an array of local Taiawanese dishes below $12. I ordered the minced pork rice and braised eggs from the restaurant. The food is simply disappointing - the rice is overcooked and mushy whereas the minced pork are overly dry and salty. I cannot make myself finish them.

Sunflower feels like it has been there forever
Apart from Essen it feels like the others next to them on the same street don't last
So they must be doing something right

It's a small place and I don't think it's wheelchair accessible

You order at the counter and seating is limited so no big groups in here

Me and Food_Rampage_AM @INSTA ordered by recommendations on the menu

Pork schnitzel for me,Al ginger pork soup. We shared sum entrees,Taiwanese sausage and, from memory, soy stewed pork

My pork schnitzel was ok,2 small fried boneless pieces, nothing special but what came with it like pork mince on top of the rice and this coleslaw were really nice.

Al's dish looked huge

Al was right, the Taiwanese sausage was similar to Chinese sausage but I liked the Taiwanese version more, its texture was nice and it had more flavour to it

The soy pork was nice and soft and tasty

Food came out at a reasonable rate and prices are reasonable also

I liked this place more than I should and I'm not sure why
Food_Rampage_AM @INSTA
Ginger pork noodle soup 4/5, served generously in a large bowl with plenty of piping hot belly warming broth, one of the best (hand-pulled?) noodles i have tasted in a long time. Fine tune your meal with the free sauces chillies condiments available.

Taiwanese sausage 3.5/5, didnt look like much until i took a bite and almost couldnt stop. A bit like chinese/hongkong-ese sausage (lap cheong) but way softer. Please dont ask me to choose which is better.

Soy braised pork belly 3.75/5, sliced thinly melt in your mouth goodness this was, only social decorum and self restraint stopped me from polishing this off by meself esp when the i got the meal shouted by my good dining companion.

Company 4.75/5, minus 0.25 for not letting me eat everything!! 😄 Thanks SydguyRoj.

A simple Taiwan restaurant on Broadway. Taiwan gourmet, quite close to Chinese. And most of the customers are Chinese.
The very first time I went there, I ordered #Curry chicken rice# Very simple like fast food restaurant.
The second time, I tried #Taiwanese Pork Mince w' Rice# $7.9, that's worth the price. It's just enough.
My friend ordered #Chilli Crispy chicken w' Rice# Tastes nice. It seems that they gonna put some mince on every dishes.
The drinks, especially tea, are cheap.

Attentive service, good food and mediocre drink. Ordered their signature crispy chicken fillet for $6.50 and it was super yummy. Self serve condiments and water are a given. The passionfruit smoothie for $4.80 was ok, don't think ill buy it again. Happy to come again.

This place is definitely value for money. Portions are large and flavourful, but the lower food quality is noticeable e.g. Cuts of meat used compared to t+ or din tai fung.
The drinks taste as good as any other place and are discounted if you buy a meal ^_^
- also short walk from usyd.

Simple food done well. And Taiwan bubble tea that has clear tea flavours rather than sugar overload.

A couple of nice Vegetarian options.

You can order the cold noodles with sesame sauce without the ham. A real Taiwan tradition.

They also have DouGan or marinated tofu as a side dish if wanting a protein hit.

Very reasonable prices.

Tea egg is nice for the Ovo veg. Makes me think of cold mornings in the Taiwan mountains ... Can smell the tea aroma from down the street.

This little cafe is much nicer inside than it presents on the outside. It's also air conditioned providing a cool retreat from the summer heat.

We enjoyed a selection of Taiwanese drinks including a hot longan ginger tea, iced green tea and pudding milk tea.

Despite the huge amount of advertising, they do not do crepes anymore.

The beef noodles: bland soup, copious amounts of noodles.
Steamed vegetables: almost a sharp sour taste.
Salt and pepper chicken: didn't come with salt or pepper, was just deep fried.
Taro milk tea was alright, a tad watery.
Lemon anf honey tea: a bit strong, but good overall.

Portions were above average, taste was below average, variety is lacking and price was okay.

I love Taiwanese food - it's one of my favourite cuisines. But this is pretty average. Sunflower is a cheap and cheerful cafe on Broadway that always has plenty of people in it. Those people are mostly students from UTS and Sydney Uni or office workers. I got the BBQ pork and rice with a passion fruit smoothie. The smoothie was fine but the meal was plain - filling but plain. So OK for a basic meal, but if I was trying to convince someone how great Taiwanese food is I probably wouldn't recommend they base it on this place.

my friend thought the food looked nice so we stepped in. the price was cheap and the service was okay. what bugs me about the place is how to order the food. it's not effective and feels so crowded, especially if you sit near the cashier. and sometimes you'd crash with the waiters and waitress while theyre trying to bring food to other people. so yeah, the food is great but when it's crowded you might want to be careful there. 7/10 recommended!!

I walked past this place tonight and left like eating Taiwanese food, and the prices seemed decent. I must say the customer service was not that great I was directed sit down and was given a menu even though the sign said to order and pay at the front counter. Well I wanted to sit away from the main door but the staff member rudely said to sit near the door as it was one of the 2 seaters left, after choosing what to ear in this case the peppered beef with rice and peach tea, I had to go to the counter to order with the menu, I could of just looked at the menu and ordered then and there. I decided after a couple vacated a table further in to move seats. The meal did come out quickly but it could of been because it was close to closing time and they wanted people to eat and leave quickly. The rice seemed overcooked and vegetables too soft, the peppered beef was nice and covered in nice gravy sauce. I probably would of given a higher score if it wasn't for the bad service and also being rushed to eat as they were closing and packing up and it wasn't even close to 930pm.

Good, cheap Asian meal with some notable dishes. Namely the sunflower special beef noodle soup and the pork mince dry noodle. Good for a quick lunch and priced well for students

Nothing beats cheap, fast and wholesome food when you're a poor uni student. The menu offers great choice for single diners as there are also a selection of cold dishes for $5.

We tried the pork chop rice and braised beef noodles. Portion sizes are great for the price and there are plenty of veggies to go with the proteins. Flavours are not mind blowing but it definitely leaves you satisfied. Being Taiwanese, they also serve the popular pearl milk tea and other variations of cold drinks.

The venue is small but most people eat and vacate with food arriving within minutes of ordering so there is rarely any wait. There isn't any eftpos on site so bring cash.

Try again? A starter of bean curd wasn’t what I was expecting, neither bean curd sheets, nor a lighter tofu. These were hard, slightly rubbery strips of bean curd in a simple soya sauce. Taiwanese sausage turned out to be the pink-red sausage that my mom used to buy at the same time as buying char siu (barbecued pork) or roast pork belly. Slightly sweet, it reminded me of home. We ordered two mains (too much for lunch with the starters). Rice and beef brisket. I’ve rarely had a beef brisket that I didn’t like, and this was perfect – I liked the extra spicy bits of meat on the rice, and the pickled veg – the flavours felt authentic. The spicy dumplings were not particularly nice. Crude and doughy, like the frozen ones I buy sometimes in Chinatown for home use, but the sauce was more garlic than chili, and I found the flavour a bit off. Glad I went. Wasn’t tasty enough to go again – though, perhaps, I should go back for the Japanese eel crepe, which sounds intriguing.

I stumbled across this restaurant about two months ago. I normally avoid Taiwanese food because I find it too oily and the taste a little repetitive but this place is different. I think its one of the better Taiwanese restaurants in Sydney. The place had this undeniable Japanese twist. Firstly, like most Jap restaurants, Sunflower's windows are filled with plates of glistening plastic food. (drool) Secondly the restaurant is also a 'crepe cafe' and serves dessert & savoury crepes. How many taiwanese restaurants do that? The place is packed with people all wanting a cheap and yummy feed. Don't worry, the restaurant is not full of UTS students. Its actually a good mix of locals and students and the adventurous Caucasian. Marinated Chicken with rice, side veges, pumpkin and tea egg. When I ordered this I asked the dumbest question. 'Hi, Is the chicken Hainanese marinated chicken?" The waitress looked at me like I w

Sunflower is an unusual name for a Taiwanese 'gourmet' eatery, especially when the plum blossom is Taiwan's national flower,

Sunflower Taiwanese Gourmet on Broadway is a little gem for Taiwanese noodle dishes, crepes and tea. Today our walk to Chinatown is cut short at Broadway when we see this sandwich board outside of Sunflower Taiwanese Gourmet. Alison and I stop, drool at the board, then give each other a knowing nod and grin. In we go... Sunflower Taiwanese Gourmet is another one of those joints we've been walking past for years and never tried. It was once called Sunflower Crepe Cafe. We've been scarred by too many sub-par
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
This little eatery on busy Broadway is decorated with quirky hot pink, custom pop art; and furnished with small tables and plastic block-stools.

Fabulous taiwanese food!. Came here for lunch and had the salmon with rich, which was delicious. The service was good and the prices are cheap too. The atmosphere was great as well.

DO NOT GO!!! EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF!!! We have been going to this local restaurant for the past 6 years. Food are tasty and good value but today we had the most unpleasant dinning experience ever. Greeted by an extremely rude guy as soon as we walked in, without a smile and asked us how many people. We told him 2 and he said "sit here" and chucked the menu on the table. My friend than went to the counter to order while I was still looking at the menu. The same guy was behind the counter, he looked at my friend and said "Haiz" in an extremely rude way and ignore him and stumped over to me and snatched the menu off my hands. He than walked back to the counter and My friend asked him why is he being so rude to us. This guy just stared at him and said "what?!?" We walked straight out the restaurant... Will never return!

I've had better. I think there are better Taiwanese restaurants in the city. The eggplant was a little oily and the minced pork and carrots and peas (what?!). Tea eggs had a funny texture, but drunken chicken was good.

Otherwise, it's cheap. I prefer Ganbei though.

This place is a staple for work lunches. The crispy chilli chicken is loaded with garlic and flavour while a selection of 3 plates of different dumplings is a must.
Urbanfork
Not bad at all. Had duck giblets, crumbed chicken on rice and boiled dumplings in chili oil. Quite tasty, authentic taiwanese cuisine. Worth a shot.
OneRestaurantAtATime
Authentic. It taste authentic but food was slightly cold for my liking. I had the mince pork rice.

Top marks to one of the best seafood noodle soups in town.
I've consistently ordered this over the last 2 years and enjoy it with the red and green bean smoothie. Great balance!

Yummy crepes

Not sure about "gourmet". We've only been here once, so can only talk about what we ordered. The pan-fried dumplings were not the best. They looked great, but I've had better. I am not sure if the regular dumplings would have been a better bet.

However, the Sunflower beef noodle soup (not to be confused with the Taiwanese beef noodle soup, which has a different cut of beef) was delicious. The broth was light but flavorful. The beef was tender. The bowl was enormous. Definitely consider sharing this with someone.

We also got the spiced eggs--a bargain at $3 for 3 eggs. Simple but delicious.

The spicy chicken with rice was okay. Deep-fried, so a bit greasy. But it also comes with rice, a side of corn and vegetables.

The place is pretty small. The decor is pretty casual. Don't come here if you're trying to impress a date. But do come if you miss certain Taiwanese food.

Delicious Taiwanese food. They have crepes and galettes as well which are pretty good too. I love the rice with stewed beef, barbecue pork and ginger pork. Always worth visiting when I am close by!

Sweet & savoury treat. A very decent place, small but cosy Asian ice-creamery, sweet and savoury crepes... very good value and so affordable! recommended for light meals and desserts, all the ingredients are fresh too.
Nadia
This is an odd little place, serving Chinese & Taiwanese savouries, sweet and savoury crepes, ice-cream and a selection of drinks. I had a sweet crepe - banana and chocolate. Very yummy. Also had a green tea latte, which was delicious. There are some pretty adventurous flavours in the crepes, such as black sesame, red bean and lychee. A great fusion of Asian and western flavours. A really fun little cafe!
