Review Makmak Macarons - Sydney

Thanks MakMak Team. Great service. We’ll be back Your awesome dinosaur cookies were gone in 10 minutes. A big hit with the kids (adults not fast enough to sample)

Quite easily the best macarons I have ever had. I am not surprised they were voted as Sydneys best, they are simply heavenly!
Georgia
The macaroons from Mak Mak were delicious! They were packaged so beautifully and made for such a special treat. Customer service was also super fast and friendly. Keen to try their 36 hour cookies next!
Leila
The variety of flavours is nice to choose from and they look delicious, however we found the macarons in the box of 14 that we bought to be quite dry, too chewy and some of the fillings tasted too artificial. Overall decent for a quick craving fix.

Best macarons in Australia. I’ve been a customer of MakMak Macarons for years and they are the closest I’ve ever had to the ones in France. They are great as gifts, for special events and parties - I’ve bought them for Chinese New Year and the Hot Cross bun macarons at Easter are sooo good! My favourite would have to be raspberries and cream. I just wish they were bigger! The 24hr cookies are so rich and a great treat. We had a last minute cake request for a birthday and Carlos was happy to help out. We gave him the theme and could not be happier with the result - a vanilla, strawberry and caramel buttercream cake. The flavours were really balanced and the cake melted in your mouth.

Sensational selection of delicious treats: freshly cooked macaroons, biscuits, cakes etc. With macaroons at $3.50 'a pop,' it may seem pricey but these are simply devine and stunning to look at. Several gluten free options available each day. Example flavours: salted caramel, Nutella, pistachio, matcha green tea, bounty, fairy bread, cookies and cream. Super fresh with high quality ingredients. Such a special treat or ideal gift basket for someone special. Minutes walk from local bus stops or about 10-15 minutes walk up from Central train Station. Parking can be tricky as they're on the main road, there are however several side streets to park in. Staff are lovely, I even got a great tip for a beach to visit 👌 Will definitely be back! Highly recommend.

They are seriously the best macarons, others don't even come close. Ordered custom ones for work with our logo and they looked and tasted amazing. Cookies are also amazing!

One of the best macaroons that I’ve try by far.
All flavour was amazing!
Peanut butter flavour, when you teeth sink into this little piece of goodness, you know it’s peanut butter flavour, it’s so real!
Same goes to strawberries, Jasmine and matcha.
Mentalla Gouda @mydatewithaplate
No only are their macarons great but they have the best cookies in Sydney. As their sign say and you know the cookies are pretty darn good.
When going in for the macaron make sure you also get their cookies

We got our first box of mak mak cookies as a gift during Christmas and we’re hoooked! Since then we’ve been pigging out and gifting to family these whenever we can. Any excuse to have more!

Loving the desserts here. Had the choc cookies and they're salty instead of sweet, it's a nice change. The macarons have just the right amount of sweetness and it not overly sickening sweet. Take your pick, there's a lot of flavours to choose from.
Eunifoodie
I only got one of their 36hour chocolate chip cookies and it was pretty good! It had a generous amount of chocolate. Don’t know if I’d want to pay $4 for a cookie again though..
@KeraBearEats
Came in on a Wednesday afternoon around lunch time, they had just opened up.

I was under the impression that makmak would be a pretty place to sit and eat, but it is literally a kitchen to see the action and to pick up the goodies. It’s a nice space though, felt like I being part of the action.

Makmaks really are the best. I’m not a fan of macarons but these blew me away. I think it’s something about the texture and the flavours that really stood out for me.

I had Nutella, Cookies and Cream, Blueberry, Raspberry Shortcake Cheesecake, Fairy Bread, Strawberry Almond, and Mango and Passionfruit - the last being my favourite.

Attended the macaron making class on the weekend and found it to be very good! We get to try one of the store macaron at the start, I had the cookies and cream 👌 Carlos then proceeded to go through the process for the first half of the class. We then got our hands dirty with combining the dough and piping the pieces onto the sheet. Lastly adding the filling. The macarons turned out really good, we made the raspberry and cream. Had a great time! Highly recommended, he made it look so easy now just for me to replicate this at home 😜

The customer service at this place is excellent. Dealt with a guy named (Carlos?) over the phone and he was very accomodating and helped me out with my requests.

I love macarons, and this place make soft cream with macaron, melted in my mouth the first time I had one. I will be back just for take some macarons! Lovely

Had a great few hours with Carlos learning the art and science of macaron making. Good fun and easy to do but hard to do well!
We are inspired and bought a few things to have a bash at home. The macarons here of course, are delicious and now I know a well made one from a wannabe, I have a new found respect for the effort it takes.
Passionfruit version is our planned first use of new skills.
Thanks Carlos :)
@burgersnbikinis
I'm yet to try the namesake macarons here but I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the famous 36 hour chocolate chip cookies. I'd heard about these for a whole and wasn't disappointed. A crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside cookie packed with lots of chocolate. Tasty but a little bit pricey when it's really just a cookie in the end. Tbh my mum bakes better choc chip ones at home. But she's hard to beat :p

The MakMak macarons are fairly chewy which personally I quite enjoyed. The shop is very small with only one main macaron display. The rest of the space is an open kitchen for holding macaron making classes (which I also attended once and it was pretty fun). I had the chocolate and peanut butter macarons which is one of my favourite flavour combinations. I will be back for the matcha flavour!!
Jessenia Jauw
they offer unique flavours of macaroon. However, this is not the best macaroon I've ever tried. The texture of the fillings were chewy which I don't really like
Kravengerfoodie
Got a delivery from MakMak since I can't drop by their store and their macarons is always my fav compare to Zumbo. MakMak have slight chewy texture which I much prefer it. Got all the flavours and you know what I can't find any fault in it.. My best treats always
Manz
The shop itself is not much to write about, it's really just a space for their kitchen (where a class was taking place) with a simple counter up front. I got there mid afternoon, and some flavours were already sold out, including the jasmine matcha, which my friend strongly recommends. I got a box of 6, pistachio, strawberry rose & almond praline, cookies & cream, nutella & salted caramel, Belgium milk chocolate, salted caramel. All of the flavours were amazing, definitely better than Zumbos, even the chocolate or caramel ones weren't too sweet, well balanced. Texture wise, it's on the flaky side, I prefer the slight chewiness of Zumbo's, but these are still very good. Price is a bit steep with $20 for 6. Definitely worth it as a once in a while treat.
TrufflePig
I agree with common sentiment Mak Mak manufacturer some of the best macarons in Sydney. There faultless and i love their variety of flavours. You really cannot look past the Jasmine Matcha. The Jasmine softens the matcha which can sometimes be a little too earthy and bitter in some creations its blended with. I'd love if their King St outlet was more of a cafe though!
Melissa Gabriele
By far the best macaroons I have had in Sydney. The texture is very light and perfect. It is crunchy on the outside and quite chewy on the inside. The flavor is top notch and they also have macaroons workshop/class! I would love to take that class sometime in the future.
Gaeth Al
Small little macaron bakery in Newtown. They only sell Macarons and they do them well. If you are sick of Zumbo and want to try something deferent, then I would highly recommend MakMak. However, it still isn't nearly as good and Adriano's,
Prawnyha
All they sell is macroons.. i think. But its delicious! Tried a few flavors and the greentea was my fav. Not as sweet with a nice flavour. Service was very lovely and friendly too. My 3yr daughter old loves them!
Johnny Pan
In short, quite possibly the best macarons I have had so far in Sydney. A wide variety of flavours - the salted caramel and the peanut butter are my favourites.
Foodforthought12
MakMak's smoked vanilla and pecan praline, passionfruit and pistachio macarons are just delightful! Do yourself a favour and buy yourself a treat (or 10) from here! You won't regret it.
Sandhya
The best macaroons I have ever tasted! They have a big variety of flavours and the staff are very friendly and helpful in catering to your needs. The packaging is great for presents.

Bought 12 macarons yesterday all different flavor. Very disappointed it tastes okay but not worth to pay $3 for each over priced. My favorite salted caramel tasted pure sugar can't find the caramel taste anywhere 😞. Compare with Zumbo it's nowhere near i think im going back to Zumbo for macarons craving.
Caitlin Hazell
BEST MACAROONS IN SYDNEY BY FAR! I seriously can't buy my macaroons anywhere else now, everything is so average/stale in comparison. Nutella, salted caramel and peanut butter are clear winners :)
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Tried the Truly Asia and Jasmine Matcha Macaron at Sweetfest. I also had an iced tea. Great tasting macarons and truly intense flavours. Would recommend to anyone.
Monica
Tried Makmak's new creation of Nutella Salted Caramel cake - layer of crunchy chewy macaron shell layer, gooey salted caramel, rich nutella layer and finished off with the perfect glaze - delicious and decadent.
Their macarons are the better ones that one can found in Sydney - big fan !
From Across The Kitchen Table
Macarons are light meringue cookies made from almond meal that are sandwiched together with buttercream, ganache or jam. These bite-sized treats are said to be produced in Italian monasteries possibly in Venice since the 8th century A.D. It was only during The Renaissance (1533) that it was introduced to France when Catherine de Medici brought her chefs with her upon marrying Henry II of France.

There was plenty of goodness at Pyrmont Growers Market this morning, including some rather scrumptious looking macaroons from MakMak. I tried the nutella salted caramel, which tasted exactly as you might imagine it would. Chewy and salty and sweet and gorgeous.
Sydneyguyrojoe
I don't mind macarons but do mind the price of such a small biscuit! I walked past by chance and if all your doing is selling macarons you must be doing something right to stay in business! It is up there with zumbo's macarons and that's how all macarons should be compared! There is no place to sit though so it's just a shop front
Better to buy these for a higher price than cheaper versions in some hot bread stores
Kit And Kafoodle
Set a fair way into suburban Newtown, this tiny storefront is dedicated to churning out delicious varieties of macarons, and only macarons. Given this focus, it’s no wonder why they do what they do so well; and in a time where most would turn to Laduree or Zumbo for their sweet hit, MakMak are holding their own.
Ronin47
Seconds. Are these better than Laduree? Who knows because I didn't end up eating the main game. I had noted the pricing of the macaroons and certainly steeper than what you would expect from the south end of King Street, Newtown. However, what immediately caught my eye is that as well as the standard macaroons they sell "Macawrongs" - yes, macaroon seconds that have had little things go wrong in their eyes. Hell, once I start carting macaroons around in any bag (foregoing a ripoff gift box), this is what all my macaroons look like!! The macawrongs were 5 for $8 and I walked out and started eating them. Can't say I"m a macaroon expert but to me they tasted just like the normal thing. Salted caramel, lemon sherbert, grilled peach buttermilk and pecan, strawberries and cream and gianduja. For what I'd paid I'd felt I'd hit the jackpot that day.

Not good. Went there in September 2014 in a hot sunny afternoon.
- Walked a long way to find a small shop, poor decoration. More like a kitchen than a shop.
- amazed by all the flavors so we bought 12..
-Quite expensively priced for a small Newtown shop
-They were either too sweet, flavorless, too hard. The texture is bad.

There are much better ones in sydney in this price range.
Don't bother unless you're nearby and desperate

...we have Newtown’s beloved Mak Mak, an establishment who claims their hand-crafted pieces to be “the best in Sydney”, but is also the most expensive of our competitors.

MakMak sells classic flavour macarons as well as a seasonal collection that changes every few months.
I tried out their spice collection about 3 months ago and i was a very happy man :)

Lovely consistent shell which thankfully was not hollow, read on about my CreAsion macaron story to find out more, with the best ganache flavours. Like Zumbo, Mak Mak also chooses to add special surprises in their centre like a whole macadamia for example

Despite not being able to try flavours I was expecting to, this store takes their macaron making seriously, and makes sensational macarons with delicate shells and great flavour combos!
THEJUGERNAUTS
Jugernauts.com MakMak opened on south kingsteet Newtown and its an unassuming shop where you can buy some tremendously good macarons. The retail store is open at 601 King St Newtown. Singular counter, bits of decor around it and lots of botanicals/greens – the new range is botanicals and there’s a printed poster on the wall. There’s already a queue. I dropped in round 2 pm and it seems like it was selling out. The strawberry, vincotto and pink peppercorn is quite pretty with the artwork on top. Box of 5. Pretty as. Rose water and rhubarb, strawberry, vincotto and pink peppercorn So here’s a glance at the flavours of macaron available from Makmak. There’s a Gin & Tonic one. Mother’s Ruin. Excellent Macarons.
Petit Fours
I like the way how they all hide little surprises inside. Purists might disagree but I found the whole hazelnut inside the gianduja and the little jubes in peach and raspberry to be quite interesting. They've got the texture right, the shells are intact, the feet existing, the colours are glossy and attractive (peach and raspberry, I'm told, has the colours of life savers, the strawberry, vincotto and pink peppercorn has interesting little dashes)...
Missklicious
As part of Good Food Month , MakMak macaron are offering a Rekorderlig and macaron masterclass. It sounded like fun, and only having ever attempted macaron making via a packet mix, wanted to see how it was done properly. After over ambitiously going to brunch at West Juliett, V & I quickly walked over and made it just in time for the 12pm start. The masterclass was held by Carlos (the founder & owner of MakMak) & Daniel, who firstly went through how it all started, and what macarons should look and feel like. We then received a sample to taste test - Smooth shell, check. Perfect feet , check. Just the right amount of filling, check! Carlos went through the whole process, from sifting and mixing process of the icing sugar and almond meal, to adding the egg whites, colouring and how the consistency of each stage should be. Then it was time for us to break into teams and give it a go (with some great guidance, of course!) Getting the piping bag ready My piped macaron shells, ready to go

I first heard of MakMak through a Facebook forum of Malaysians in Australia. I am not a macaron person but the colourful box of little round cuteness caught my attention because the person who shared that photo made a passing mention of the owner being Malaysian.

Do not order online if you would like delivery at a specific date. Mak mak are hopeless with delivery, do not make the effort with their customers to keep them happy, and even go as far as blaming the customer for poor service. Terrible communication. The most horrible part is. . The macarons are good, just the staff are horrendously petulant and unhelpful.
Joanne
Interesting flavours of macarons. I love chai latte hence pounced at a chance to try the chai macaron. It did not disappoint. The other personal favourites were salted caramel, smoked vanilla & pecan praline. I've had better green tea flavoured macaron but it was still good. They were not too sweet at all! ^^ Will be back to have others.
Gemma
Perfect and very pretty. Delightful macaroons in lovely flavours, beautiful colours and designs, always fresh so they're never that day-old-chewy consistency you sometimes get. And they introduce new/seasonal flavours too which is a great incentive to go back again and again. A special they had recently - passionfruit rekorderlig cider - there was no minimum order, so I ordered 4 because ordering one seemed crazy, but they were super lovely about it and got straight back to me via email.

One of the better macarons in sydney. The flavours are very pronounced and they're not overly sugary. Went on a thursday night and they had about 15 flavours available - also sell bags of macawrongs, 5 macarons for $7.50 (bargain!) that are just a little odd shaped so great if you just want to try the flavours.
In a better league than the "quirky" flavoured macs from THAT dude in balmain. Yums, definitely worth the price tag ($3) and random location, will return for my mac fix
THEJUGERNAUTS
Odd shop but great macarons. Its not the most dinner friendly store - what with it seemingly more like a kitchen (they make the macarons) with a smallish display space out front - the macarons however are really good. Bought a few times - one was an xmas pressie and that was well received. I don't think they take card even, so bring cash - there is a CBA atm outside real nearby.

SAA. Perfectly created macarons with a wide variety of creative flavours. All found in a beautifully decorated little shop down the peaceful end of King St a hop away from Sydney Park.
