Review Lilong By Taste Of Shanghai - Sydney

Adrian M
I tried the pan fried pork buns which were not the absolute best I've had but still pretty good. The pastry was a little inconsistent with the sides being thin but the top was really thick. The amount of soup was also inconsistent between the buns (though that's quite common), but the filing was otherwise still juicy and overall delicious. The lemon grass pork chop had decent flavour, but was a little dry and would have been better if it was juicier. Serving sizes are quite decent, and you can order delivery like I did and it travels reasonably well.

My go-to place for Shanghainese dishes! Everything was very flavourful and cooked to order. Some of the standout dishes were: > Deep Fried Buns w/ Condensed Milk - iykyk ;) > Sizzling Sliced Beef on Hot Plate - the beef was super tender > Shanghai Turnip Croissant - super super flaky pastry with shredded turnip filling... the best thing ever I wouldn't recommend ordering the Barramundi in Sweet & Sour Sauce though as the fish itself was very dry and the sauce didn't have that wow factor... once you've tasted the real deal from the restaurants in shanghai you can never go back : (

Food taste ok, but not perfect. A bit expensive. I will come back for the pan fried bum, which is reasonably priced at $13. Btw, my daughter likes fried pan cake though.

Depends on what you order but I find it to be a bit more on the exy side. Lunch today wasn't the best I've had here - the stir-fried vegetarian + egg noodles were very oily - didn't finish it. Tried the new curry chicken and coriander dumplings and it was okay. Wasn't spectacular or a burst of flavour neither juicy enough.

The food tastes as good as the one at Darling Square but service was such a pain. The staff acted so slow. We had to waited for 15 mins to get seated though there were plenty of empty tables.

I would have given a 4stars for the veggie dumplings but the 1star is taken away by the service, we waited at the entrance for a while and saw a staff head down playing with his phone and trying to get their attention for order also difficult. Maybe I’m asking too much about service after covid? We also had the Pan-fried Steamed Bun and XO rice and both are good as well, but the spicy & sour soup is no good we only had a few spoon.

Love the food here, we come regularly. It's not the cheapest place but the food is excellent. Great dumplings made on the premises, good service. It's always busy but never too difficult to get a table (it's worth booking).

Not sure if it's me or something wrong with their foods, I become ill all the time after eating their foods. The food is good and tasty but the waiting time is long and the services here are not up to standards. No greetings from the staff and they took forever to clean the tables for the next customers. Not to mention they also gave us the wrong order and we had to return it.

Overall a good experience, fast service and delicious food. The xiao long baos were one of the best we had unique as the skin texture and soup broth was perfect. The mapo tofu was nice and silky however it was slightly plain (lacked the minced meat). We also ordered yangzhou fried rice which was quite bland. We recommend getting the spicy chilli wonton as it was amazing and will definitely be back.

The xiao long bao was the star of the dish. Unfortunately the fried rice was tasteless and dry- i couldn’t finish it. The same week i had it i also ubereats their char kwe tiao- it was extremely tasteless. Seems like their wok based dishes are not cooked properly. please work on this, as I see alot of potential in the dishes but lacking bit of flavor. Some of their menu is a hit and miss 😟

Food is just the same quality as their mother store! Service was a bit slow though, with the pan fried dumplings arriving after we were halfway through with the other two dishes. Besides that, the staff was very friendly.

Polite staff, gets a little busy on Friday nights, but gets a table in less than 10mins wait, great area for kids to play while you wait for your table, been here for both dinner and lunch, great experience. Food is fantastic

Nice seating and fast service but menu and food is just meh for me. Nothing fancy. I was hoping I could get something nice since it is the rooftop dining and not the similar restaurants you get along Forest road.

We ordered a large assortment of dumplings, a serve of drunken chicken and spring rolls. The dumplings were great and so was the drunken chicken. Food was brought out promptly.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Got to love a steamed dumpling combo. New on the menu, it offers four pairs of each of the following dumpling varieties -
Chicken and corn, shrimp and chive, beef and baby celery, and lamb and spring onion. We also had the lemongrass pork chop with rice which was a generous serve with steamed rice and fresh tomato and lettuce; although the pork was cooked well I didn’t get a lot of the lemongrass flavours and the rice was a little hard. The deep fried Chinese milk buns were absolutely delicious, piping hot and crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Ahah
Didn’t come here during peak hour so service was fast. Ordered the pan fried pork buns which were pretty good and the diced chicken fried rice which were decent. Price was good for the serving size
Nika Belobrajdic
Absolute favorite restaurant, their dumplings are amazing, and although the food is on the slightly pricier side, they’re 100% worth it. Head staff are also very friendly.
Cinntonic
Efficient service, just flag them down as they sweep past. Food was tasty and good portions. The price point is a bit too high for the location, especially some of the vegetation items (e.g. green beans).

I was incredibly grossed out and lost my appetite as soon as I saw them wheeling a full bin in and out from right in front of our table.
The service was slow and very lacking, it was not busy when we visited but they still could not cater to us somehow.
I was very disappointed and I would not or go back, incredibly gross.
NFV
Service very slow.... none of the dishes we ordered had a wow factor..... though it was packed being Friday night ..... ambience was gud ..... Very few veg options for my friends....so vegetarians should avoid a visit or be disappointed
Rakelg
got some takeaway dumplings from here on a weeknight and they were so busy! they made the dough fresh and the filling was prepared fresh before they steamed them. they tasted great.
Muse-to-Dine
I would love to score this place higher than everage but they are lacking in a few areas. English speaking waiters for a start. The food how ever is pretty good. Its just hard when staff just try and rush orders out. No real attention, you just feel like a number. Crispy duck, garlic prawns, onion pancakes, dumplings are pretty good and tasty. We ordered quite a bit this time and it was all coming out so quick, it was hard to stop and enjoy it.
Eddy Chan
We ordered the crispy duck (half), it comes out with just a small portion, it's less than 10 pieces. When i complained to the waiter, he said it's a small duck. When you said in the menu as half duck, they should not give you just a few pieces.
The stir Fried shanghai noodle was the worst noodle that I ever have. Can"t find any meat, cabbage....
I won't go again. Not worth to !!
Sydneyguyrojoe
More of a 3.5 star because there isn't much room there in terms space between tables which is very hard if you got a pram and the food took a while to come out
But the food is all good and portion sizes were bigger than expected. The portion sizes match the prices. Impressed l
That's Neat
Super disappointed with our visit to Lilong.

Following the convenience of parking at the Westfield, we decided to visit this Taste of Shanghai instead of the one outside on Forest Rd. I strongly advise you to not make our same mistake.

Xiao Long Bai - The dumpling skin was thick and soggy. Biting into the dumpling, there was absence of any flavour. Very dissatisfying.

Pan Fried Pork Bun - I imagine these were sitting for a while on the kitchen bench because they were probably lukewarm at best. The outside had become slightly soggy and lacked the crispness usually found on the pan fried bottom.

Stir Fried Green Beans with Pork Mince - Reminiscent of veiny long fingers, these green beans were fried too long. Copious amount of oil was used to mask the dry beans.

Overall, do not rate this place. Service and food were very very average. Take your dumpling money and go else where.

I frequent here often with a group of friends when we feel like shanghai cuisine mainly due to it's location, seating, and consistency. Time after time, they serve up good dumplings and other dishes that are tasty. I tend to order XLBs, pot stickers, rice cakes and probably a fish/beef in spicy oil. Honestly, it is overpriced cos it's in Westfield haha and you can definitely get cheaper and of same or better quality elsewhere. But their service is efficient, has space for larger groups and feed our hungry stomachs with yummy food :P Not the best, but it's good.
Pinicolada
My new go to restaurant when I am in the area. Acceptable prices and very yummy. Classy layout. Sometimes there are lines but time is easy to kill as Westfield is just downstairs. Edit from 5 stars to 3. I ordered the yang Zhou fried rice during my second visit and it came out cold.
The Sydney Tram
Came here due to my craving for yumcha because sadly, there is no decent yumcha restaurant around the area. I really like the interior decor with a wall full of old photos. Oil lamps and little tree pots are also nicely arranged along the wine shelves. The opening door reminisces the old Chinese era. Colourful cheongsams, traditional dresses, playing with the wind.

I picked the xiao long bao as it is chef recommended dish. Tiny soup dumplings inside the bamboo steamer landed on the table not long after. I used chopsticks to carefully pick up such delicacy, before transferring it to the soup spoon. To avoid wasting and splashing the broth, a small bite and slurp is recommended. The mixture was so tender, it just melted in my mouth. Probably this is the best dish of Lilong. I tried the mixed dumplings too, however I didn't enjoy them as much. I just couldn't take the strong taste of lamb fillings, as much as I tried not to waste food. The Chinese version of crispy chicken & tomato rice was a bit bland without the 'nuoc cham' like in the Vietnamese version.

Overall, this is a nice place in Hurstville if you want to explore Shanghainese and Northern Chinese cuisines. Each dish costs around $10 with good portion, quite pricey compared to yumcha food. I wish they cater smaller serving so we can try out more dishes.
Tortuguita Comiendo
On top of Westfield near the cinemas in a nice outdoor setting. When we arrived there was a line but the wait wasn't long.

We weren't very hungry so only tried two dishes
1. Xiao long bao
2. Mixed steamed dumplings

They were both delicious. With the mixed steamed dumplings you get eight dumplings with four different kinds so get to try a bit of everything.

Fried rice with XO sauce and green beans with pork mince are a must try. Really tasty and generous portions. Only thing we noticed was instead of pork mince they replaced it with shrimp mince but it was still ok, its just we weren't informed. Overall, good food a little bit pricey though. Lovely ambience outdoor and fast service.

Been here few times. Tonight I'm having steamed dumpling combo and wonton soup. Tasty and nice selection. Friendly fast service. Will be back again.

Came here to have lunch and we got a table straight away. We were amazed by the decoration of this restaurant which can bring memory of being at the mainland China. Decided to try ordering Xiao Long Bao and yes they were delicious. The pork was seasoned really well and the whole steamed bun was just very tasty. Highly recommended for those who have not tried this restaurant before. Also, there is another restaurant at Forest Road but it is much more convenient to come to Westfield and go to Lilong at the Rooftop Dining area.

Excellent dumplings (xiao long bao) and cute decor but otherwise nothing special. Convenient to get to as on top of the Westfield Hurstville Rooftop. Would consider coming back but only because of the convenience.

Very good food. You can see the chef's making dumplings. Been here twice. Good variety and nice atmosphere except for the occasional car driving past outside in the car park.
The Weekend Foodie
I keep coming back here!! Ive been here once as a guest, and didnt think much of the restaurant. However ive dined here out of my own volition 3 timss in the past 2 months.

Their dumplings (xiao long baos) are excellent! As are their pan fried buns!! Nomnomnom highly recommended. I wouldnt recommend the crispy skin chicken with red rice. Im not a fan of tom yum soup or lemongrass in savoury foods... the rice tastes like lemon grass and the chicken was dry.

I do recommend all the traditional shanghainese dishes, they are all cooked quite well!

Exactly the same menu as Taste of Shanghai (which is incredible) but with more space and nicer decor. Absolutely love eating here. The staff are super fast and efficient.

I like to come here with friends after shopping for a quick bite. Very friendly stuff (that you are not going to experience in Huntsville a lot) and always fresh dumplings.
Cravings Thru Syd
I had the Singapore noodles there and it was just dry and bland. Would not recommend that dish at all. The dumplings were average, I mean the wonton skins (I had the Pork and Vegetable Dumplings in Spicy Oil) were pretty heavy but I guess I'm expecting too much as this isn't DTF. Ambience was good, would I come back, probably not.
TotalAwkward
Xio long bao and other dumplings are pretty much the same as taste of shanghai so can't complain. Ordered some stir fried vegetables. Food was nice despite a smaller menu. Easy to get to on the rooftop of Westfield. Ramp access with a short walk from lift or escalators. Indoor and outdoor seating. Staff were lovely. $38 for 2 plates of dumplings and one plate of veggies. A little steep for the area.

Tasteless - for a group that has great good in the city, this brand new outlet is an absolute disgrace. Why would you put your name to it. 8:30pm, Friday night Feb 3rd, the special XO fried rice contained no flavour and what looked cubed frozen vegetables and big hunks of tasteless chicken all served on a soft plastic plate - all for about $19-$20.
Either get your menu sorted or get someone who can cook.

Booked table on Australia Day an hour before for 7 and was accommodated.
Lovely atmosphere. Prefer this place to the one on Forest Rd in Hurstville.
Similar quality food to all the other good shanghainese restaurants.
Will be back.

It's a new eatery under taste of shanghai restaurant group. Initially though they do shanghai cuisine when looked menu in details and discovered they offer range of Asian food from spicy Sichuan, northern china dumping to Singapore fried noodle. We were a bit hesitate to order from the unusual menu. We tried shanghai pork bun, pan fried pork bun, crispy chicken with tomato rice, braised beef noodle soup and Singapore fried noodle. Quality came ok portion are generous service attentive. Recommend for family with kids or friends catch because of the varieties.
Retrodaze
On top of Westfields Hurstville, with new places like Burger Co. by Kingston and now also an offshoot of the popular Shanghainese chain of restaurants - Lilong. From what I recall, the menu is very much similar to the other Taste of Shanghais. The setting is more relaxed with some indoor and some outdoor seating but it is all undercover. It was also reasonably busy on a Saturday night, so best to avoid peak times or book early if you have a big group.

Lilong recently opened in Hurstville as a branch of the well loved Taste of Shanghai.
Upon coming here our first visit to say it was terrible would be an understatement. We waited in line patiently, for 20 minutes or so, however instead of being seated when it was our turn, the staff seated customers whom had just walked right in. Then asking us to yet again wait with insincere apologies, we left, sickened at the customer service or rather lack of. Our second time was a slight improvement, having gone there at lunchtime on a weekday, the service was faster yet still inhospitable. Menu is similar if not the exact same as taste of shanghai and in all real honestly we would have opted for taste of shanghai anyways. Staff was once again unwelcoming however food was at that of a decent standard. Having tried Lilong once, it is safe to say we will be sticking to taste of shanghai.

Get in this place at 2:30pm I took a seat at outside. Have been waiting for 15mins no one came for taking order or anything and no water serviced as well. I went inside there were 3 ppl chatting.
Before I try the food here, I already feel disappointed with the whole experience. I asked a glass of water and the lady with glasses made me feel like she wasn't really happy to give to me.
Hardly compares this place with the TianTong(taste of Shanghai).
Btw,Food tastes ok. 1for food 0.5for others.
Bad experience. Won't come back. I rather take downstairs food court than here.
Sweetandyummie
Located on the Westfield Hurstville rooftop food precinct - this place has a great vibe and feels super modern. Owned by taste of Shanghai group - the food is delicious and made with fresh ingredients. The customer service is attentive and I really like the enclosed feeling this place has like your in someone's house. I highly recommend the fish fillet in spicy chilli oil and the barramundi in sweet and sour sauce.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Lilong is located on Westfield Hurstville's newly renovated rooftop dining precinct. The cuisine is authentic Shanghainese and the variety of this wonderful food is amazing and diverse.

Came to check this place out one early evening. Between the 2 of us, we ordered the Pork & Vegetable Wonton Soup, Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs and the Sizzling Mongolian Lamb. This was more than enough for 2 people! Food came out real quick and the service was attentive and efficient, it's just a bit pricey.
Snapshots Of Food
Lilong by Taste of Shanghai has finally opened up in the rooftop dining precinct of Westfield Hurstville and we could not be any more happier. Most of you already know by now, but we both love the food at Taste of Shanghai, so much so that we visit the Hurstville store frequently for take-out. The problem is, the store is small so it has very limited seats and even take-out can see you waiting for up to 30 minutes, The opening of Lilong should help ease the load by providing a similar store with practically identical tasting food! ... and they have plenty of seating capacity! :)
