Review Upper Room Cafe - Sydney

Steve Grantham
The barista insisted I laud this place as "miscegenation nation" but I didn't believe him. He didn't really, but he certainly pointed out that his black skinned companion had helped in the preparation of our morning coffee. And good tasting coffee it is indeed. There are wonderfully substantial fitouts to be found in town and SOHO Espresso features a fitout for the ages, complete with some abstract expressionism on the wall that would make Helen Frankenthaler blush. Friendly staff, cafe window packed to the brim like a Roman square. In the lobby of 175.

Terrible coffee that was cold - how hard is it to warm and froth milk? The raisin toast was burnt and they forgot my toast and left it on the counter and didn’t bother to call me. First and last time I go to this cafe that has terrible customer service.
Rattan Muttoo
Ok coffee from another Pitt St cafe. Selling pre-prepared wraps, sandwiches, tarts and small deserts. Overall nothing to write home about but good news is that Soho is one of 15 cafes in a 2 block radius around Pitt St. so there's plenty of choice around. If you want to try something different (better coffee) try the coffee cart outside opposite Kit & Ace on Pitt St.

Coffee tastes awesome! Theo and his staff are always friendly, accommodating and ready to go above and beyond in customer service. Great place for that 3pm pick me up!

solid coffee, cant really fault it. usually drink it all before even reaching the office, not sure if that is complimentary to its taste or the fact its not hot enough. quick service regarding the amount of orders they have circa 9am. almond croissant wonderful.

I had my first flat white coffee and chocolate mud muffin in a year. The service was good.

Cool cafe, good coffee, nice staff

Good coffee! I use the hey you app to put my order in as sometimes wait can be long. There isn’t anywhere to sit on the inside but outside there are some tables.

Well if you want to try off this restaurant using Zomato Gold, you might be disappointed. When I asked the lady at the coffee place If i can use Zomato to pay, the other guy (seems like the chef or bartender) told me to go to the restaurant area ( the food court located inside) if I want to use Gold (which provides a different menu).
Went inside and asked the other staff, he said Zomato doesnt give them any machine to receive order so they cant get my order at the moment. I told them im ordering offline and I will just pay on Zomato, and showed him the terms and conditions. He however asked me to come back tomorrow and said his manager didnt tell him anything about it. Common!!! I want my food! Are you asking me to starve until the next day so you can confirm with your boss!!!
I ended up paying full price and the disappointment is big! The only reason I gave them a 2 is because the food tastes pretty good and the price is rather cheap in CBD area. But they need to train their staff better that’s for sure!

This restaurant is well hidden inside the Stockland Piccadilly Shopping Centre, unless you were looking for it, you may not see it. I do love the chicken rice at this place. Their rice has so much flavour from the broth it’s been cooked in. If you like chicken rice, you should try it. They also offer a wide selection of other meals.

Great crispy pork roll in CBD...freshly made every time! The more I keep going here the longer the lines!

The girl or guy with the short hair running the coffee machine was extremely rude. Would not answer me when I was asking him/her a question. Rude rude staff. Coffee prices are inconsistent. Give this place a miss. Plenty of choice in this area of the cbd, no need to put up with shit service. Hot tip!!

Really nice Malaysian food. Tried the Bain Marie options and the food is full of flavour. Beef was succulent, lots of strong curry taste without being too chili. Will definitely need to try the cook to order food next time.

Ordered curry chicken for pick up via a menu ordering app. Having never been to Upperroom Restocafe before it was a little tricky to find as there isn’t much of a street presence, being located inside Wesley Mission. The takeaway was ready for pick up upon arrival and there was a generous amount of succulent chicken pieces in the curry. However, it didn’t come with rice!

I can't believe this place is not more packed at lunch during the week! The Chicken rice here is as good as anything I've eaten in Malaysia and Singapore, and actually better than nearby equivalents in the cbd. The chicken is thigh meat only but so succulent and that rice is just heavenly...

I've eaten here a few times now and each time everything have been delicious.

A little hard to find on the street, being inside the Wesley Mission Centre with no sign on outside. We were also a little disappointed that on Sunday they don't serve the Malaysian menu. Instead we tried one of the cake & my friend had a taro milkshake which she found too heavy and not the most enjoyable. The raspberry burnt butter cake though was devine.

This venue offers a quite extensive menu. So many exciting dishes. On this particular visit the dish ordered was Nasi Lemak w/ Fried Chicken. It was delicious! Every single element was spot on and the sambal brought the dish to the next level.

PIcollo before church service.
Resto-bistro sort off... serving breakfast and lunch.
Coffee is not too bad at all, they do serving cold drip as well.

Very good food, good service and nice environment. Definitely recommended. We are origin from Malaysia, is nice to find a Malaysian restaurant which serves authentic Malaysian food.

Such a quirky cafe, I would never have presumed that they would have Asian cuisine - very yummy Asian cuisine to boot. They have a counter facing the street with pastries, but an entire dining area behind it.

Got their Hainanese Chicken Rice (via MealPal) and it was SO GOOD! Both the rice and the chicken was packed with flavour and the portion size was quite generous.

My friend got their curry laksa which comes with a drink for $13. Apparently they only have chicken laksa. I tried a bit of his broth and thought it tasted pretty good, if a little bit spicy for my liking.

They serve various of food and all types of tastes. Rice, noodle, burgers, chips , snacks... For me, I like the hainanese chicken rice and the crispy spring rice the most. Will come back .

Finding this was a mission, if it weren't for someone's review stating that it was near Missions we would've walked around longer for sure. Food is nice, ordered from the breakfast menu and got more food than we bargained for. Waiting was around 30mins. Servers are nice and friendly.

Worst Malaysian ever!! Expensive and extremely poor service. Went here with 4 friends between first and last order arriving was 45 minutes! During work hours too... menu is diverse and a few fusion dishes, but they are very poorly managed. Never coming back!

Very spacious and relaxed setting. Ordered the smashed avocado with poached eggs, the eggs were cooked perfectly and very tasty. There was a side of grilled tomatoes which were unbelievable!!

Visited your cafe today for lunch; your coffee was beautiful with a rich taste n smooth in texture. It went perfectly with the raspberry & hazelnut log.
The food was also excellent too. Char kuay teoh, hainan chicken rice & beef rendang were all amazing. Extensive menu @ good prices for a city cafe with Malaysian food.
Coffeebrunchanddinner
This cafe is a relaxing spot for lunch in the city with a large selection of meals including many Asian dishes. For something different try the ice Bandung a Malaysian drink with condensed milk that almost tastes like a lollie! The Curry Laksa with chicken was amazing value at $12.80 and extremely filling! Likewise the Nasi Lemak with beef rendang, coconut rice and accompaniments was a generous serving for only $13.80. With daily specials this cafe should be on your regular list for a city lunch!

If you’re looking for authentic Malaysian cuisine in the heart of the city, Upperroom Restocafe is the place to be! They have an amazing selection of noodle, rice and curry dishes that cater to all types of tastes, and even have a selection of Aussie favourite like burgers and chips as well. On our visit we had two amazing dishes – the Hainanese Chicken Rice and the Upperroom Char Kway Teow.

Sambal barramundi fillets with piping hot steamed rice hits the spot. The Pattaya Fried Rice special on Fridays was yummy too. A lovely spot in the CBD for Malaysian food.

Not a fan. We waited ages for our meal and it was disappointing. There wasn't enough meat in my stir fry , it just tasted like greasy, oily noodles. The salmon was better but this place is over priced. I'd get a better meal at the local pub.
I Ate My Way Through
Upperroom Resto Cafe is tucked away at the front of Wesley Mission on Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD. It’s easy to miss — you’ve probably walked past it a lot (I have!), but when you’ve been once you’ll be back. They have a café at the front when you enter, if you walk down further you’ll see the restaurant at the back with more seating.

I've been here a few times and just revisting to retry the Hainanese Chicken Rice ($13.80). It's still good as I remember with tender moist chicken. The chilli sauce is improved as well and very tasty with noticeable chilli kick. The side soup tasty. Tomato pieces perhaps cut a bit too chunky for my liking and I'm not a fan of receiving the end bits which I got this time. Still a Simon Favourite with such a yummy chicken and flavoursome rice. Service was friendly and efficient. Plenty of seating, enjoyable space and free WIFI available. Lots of other Malaysian dishes on the menu. I've enjoyed the Char Kway Teow ($13.80) before but I'm definitely trying the Singapore Chilli Soft Shell Crab with Rice ($16.80) next time which seems to be new since I last visited.
The Next Rush
The masters of lunch cafe service have just extended their hours and I was privileged to be one of the first to sample their NEW DINNER MENU which began serving this week!!! And it certainly did not disappoint with a jam packed slight re-invention of Malaysian and hints of South East Asian influences in a colorful menu curation that takes your pallette on the ultimate joyride!

One of the great things about Malaysian cuisine is the remnants of Chinese, Indian and Singaporean influences you will find across that country. The menu design (by co-owners, James, Tisna & George and their talented team of Chefs (Alan, Eeleen & Johnny) takes the best of those influences in a number of original signature and re-worked classics!

For entrees we started with the CRISPY QUAIL which is lightly seasoned and served in quarters. The GRILLED GARLIC MARINADED PRAWN SALAD is served on greens and vermicelli with hints of fish sauce and a kick from fresh chillis! THREE-CUP CHICKEN is a softly battered dish with a slight crisp and blended with a basil infused soy sauce – absolutely stunning dish! Just when I thought the Chefs could not outdo themselves, they continued with the surprises using the SWEET & SOUR flavours we love from classic Chinese with LAMB CUTLETS – it was a very unexpected combination but worked so well!!! It was as if American Ribs had met Sweet & Sour Pork and it was so addictive and sticky messy to eat - I couldn't stop and finished most of the serving!!! And then we were presented with their signature PUMPKIN FRIED RICE – the Malaysian / South East Asian answer to the Italian's Risotto with almost a tropical element to it. It was a half Butternut Pumpkin hollowed out filled with Prawn Fried Rice and then the puree used to coat the entire mountain of rice grains.

So much to love about this menu, that keeps you guessing until you get your tastebuds into it, but it's the friendly service attendants and also the team of Chefs who put so much care into each dish that embody the real charm that the Upperroom is all about! The portions are quite large and mains are generally designed as share plates, the space is indoors and a perfect escape from the metropolitan bustle whether you're out shopping at the nearby mall or a communiting office worker. Seating is designed for groups with large open spaces for you to enjoy an informal gathering, meeting or private function! Can't wait to come back and explore the rest of the menu this wonderful place has to offer!

Tried out the restaurant for the first dinner service and all the food was delicious! We ordered a range of things and they all arrived quickly and tasted as described. The homemade tofu with salt and pepper seasoning was so delicate and melted in the mouth. The crispy eggplant was just the right balance of flavours and in great bite sized pieces. Following the recommendation of the server we also chose the three cup chicken which exceeded expectations with a beautiful flavourful covering. Our other main choice of the barramundi came with the house made sauce with an excellent spicy kick. For a change of a standard rice side we chose pumpkin fried rice which arrived in a half a pumpkin! A great experience and will definitely be back for more.

Was invited by zomato to try out this place and the first thing that took me by surprise was it was very much like a Malaysian restaurant as well as a cafe. Went with the Malaysian food and was definitely impressed by the quality of the food and how fast it arrived after ordering. The prices were decent too for his location - definitely will be coming back here

Great restaurant located inside the Wesley mission building. At the front they have a cafe for coffees and light lunches but walk further in and you will see the restaurant with a great open space and bar area. The menu has variety with a lovely spread of authentic Malaysian dishes. I highly recommend the Wagyu laksa and the chicken rice.

Recommended by a friend and it turns out that they serve awesome asian dish. Tried out the hainanese chicken rice, lobak rice and the coffee. Great ambience. Worth a try for the hainanese chicken rice 👍🏿

Located in the Wesley Mission Building. Nice spacious setting that can probably fit 40-50 people. Free wifi and lots of power points. Good place to work or study. Had a pork belly salad which was sorta good. Pork belly was a bit tough but the roasted pumpkin was divine.

Unique cafe with a fusion of asian and western food items. Great coffee and nice layout, great value too. Only problem is it is hard to find.

Must confess to being a little disappointed that the 'kitchen' doesn't open to 7:45 given I checked the opening hours and it is listed as 7am. Nonetheless the staff were friendly, my avocado toast was taste and filling and the coffee was better than average by a long way.

Great place to have city meetings. Comfortable, quiet, good coffee, food is tasty and reasonably priced. The staff have always been friendly and attentive. I havent needed to explain every little thing to them. All the barista's are good but the head barista knows his stuff! Quietly makes it all happen with little fuss and great result.

Love the quiet comfy environment that makes it easy to sit and read the paper or hold a small meeting. It just "feels" good.

Good place to go - check it out!

It's easy to walk right on by upperroom, it's tucked away on Pitt street but definitely worth the search!

I have to start out with the staff, they are incredibly attentive and can literally read your mind (they did twice, once with my need for tomato sauce, the other with my need for a serviette). They were polite and speedy which made my dining experience even more enjoyable!

Ordering the chicken burger I was extremely impressed with the bun and the bacon was absolutely heavenly, crunched to perfection. Only downer was the onion (I should have ask for it without) onions on burgers just don't do it for me.

Their fruity drinks are also seriously yummy!

Great decor and all round fab place to eat.

Received my big breakfast missing 2 of the listed included ingredients (tofu, grilled tomato)
However price was incredibly reasonable. Scratch that. Prices were brilliant!
The coffee, staff and food is great. I especially like the salted caramel brownies. Plus, they're very socially conscious, supporting efforts to reduce homelessness, etc.
