Review Bistro De Elliano - Sylvania

Simon Beckett
I came across Bistro de Elliano by chance and It really was a lucky find. The decor is simple yet stylish and really does give that authentic french feel. The food is exactly the same: I started with the Onion and goats cheese tart, where the goats cheese and caramelised onions were complimented perfectly by the home made puff pastry. My wife started with the twice baked lobster soufflé, which by all reports was creamy, lite and very Moorish. Next up was the Rib eye steak on a bed of potato with truffle jus for me and the Duck confit for the Mrs. The steak was cooked perfectly, juicy and medium rare with a slightly crispy outside and the potatoes were superb. It is possibly the best steak i've found in the shire so far. I can report personally that the duck was also excellent, as i worked hard to pinch as much of it off the wife's plate as possible (i'm a sucker for both duck and parsnips). By desert we were both stuffed, but that didn't stop me from ordering desert (we shared the Pots De Cream) as i couldnt resist. On top of the food, staff were also friendly and attentive. making us feel very welcome and well looked after. My only complaint was that we had the place all to ourselves, as this is now one of my favourite places to eat and i would be really upset if it went away because it didnt get the attention and patronage it deserves. I have already been back twice since then.

Oh dear! What a major let down ... The ambiance was pleasant and the table was set nicely, very clean and the glasses shone like a bright star. The young staff very sweet and engaging, but a little inexperienced ... however they did try their best and with ongoing training they will gain the skills needed to grow. Having said that, the Chef on the other hand let's down this new business. His skills are way below ordinary and their pricing structure is really beyond over priced for the food portions, presentations and taste of their dishes. From the exorbitant very, very ordinary garlic bread ... at our table of 8 we ordered 4 serves, this turned out to be 4 medium dinner rolls, over cooked and really too hard to eat and the actual garlic was served in a tiny small dish with melted butter with a couple of garlic slices ...For this the cost was $32.00 dollars...Whew! Next was the entree's priced from around $16-21 again small serves, two was only ordered as dessert's choices was more desirable. Out came the mains after a considerable time lapse, these presented ever so uninteresting, no oooh's or gushing and upon eating no comments of delight was expressed mostly inward silence at the shock of such tasteless bland main meals being served to us. We are locals and choose to support our local restaurant, this is under new management and so we gave it a sincere go. I must say the owners have the highest opinion of their restaurant and menu. All I know is that I would like to buy them at my price and sell them at theirs! We all had expected some sort of vegetable accompaniment, but no greens or vegetables was served these where extra and at $8.00 a serve .. again 4 was order and again that was another $32.00 this being a grand total of $64.00 for just 4 bread rolls and 4 small dessert size serves of vegetables...and again very, very ordinary. The Wine was nothing under $38.00 a bottle ... with limited choices as was the food menu. So in total we had 4 serves of garlic bread, 2 entree's, 7 mains and one entree size as a main and this was $21.00 it was woe-full almost inedible, not wishing to upset my dear friends who chose this restaurant, just ate in silence..... Never, ever, again. Two bottles of wine between 8 and the men had a beer each a $7.00 a beer... total cost was around $480.00 this was without any desserts, coffee and only two entree's. Conclusion if you enjoy eating bland, tasteless and over priced no value for money feel free to throw around your time and money and donate to this restaurant, Good luck guys ... suggest turn it into a steak house and at club / pup prices ...because you are way off the mark as a French restaurant and charging 5 star hotel prices. regretful angie bassan

Food was really nice, we were the only ones in the shop but they weren't in a hurry to kick us out. Midweek special is a good option if you're that way inclined. good sized portions and not too expensive. I had the Coq au vin, which was flavorful and satisfying, then the profiteroles with salted caramel sauce which were delicious :)
