Review Som Tam - Thornbury

David N
Venue: cosy and small. Great atmosphere. Staff are friendly and attentive, and the service is fast. Food : delicious ! So many flavours in each meal. We basically ordered the whole menu. Everything came out fresh and in a timely manner. Highly recommend.

I must say this place is the best Thai resto in the area. The service was fast with complimentary Som Tam salad. The staff were very friendly. One of them even remembered me haha. I had to dine here twice to make sure I wasn't just spellbound the first time and so I can make an unbiased review. And Yes, Som Tam did not disappoint. The food was so amazing. You can really experience the tangy taste of lemon and fish sauce in some of their dishes. All in all, If you're in Thornbury, Som Tam is a must try. Cheers!

Delicious and affordable Thai Food. We will definitely be back to try other dishes.

Always have the best authentic Thai food when I come here and leave so satisfied! Regularly return to this place and it never fails as well as the excellent staff and service. The menu has something for everyone and is certainly the best Thai restaurant I’ve been too! A must try!

Best Thai food in Melbourne with flavours that remind you of eating in the streets of Bangkok. Kitchen staff happy to make any dish as hot as they serve in Thailand. Very reasonable prices given such high quality food. All the waiters and waitresses very friendly and happy to accommodate any special requests.

We really had an excellent night at SOMTAM! The food was amazing and so were the services. Even tho there were lots of customers, the food still came on a good time. We’ll definitely go back again.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This restaurant used to be one of our favourite Thai restaurant but we were very disappointed tonight knowing that their chef has left this place. The service were very slow and not attentive at all. Some of the dishes in the menu were not available to order. The foods were a big let down. Their authentic Thai food now tasted like Chinese food at shopping town food court. 👎👎 Unfortunately we can't go back there again. Very sad.

I really enjoyed the food. The Thai is some of the best I've had in a while. Service was honest and friendly.

Fabulous take away tonight. Keeping up the very high standards through these corona times. The Thai food at Som Tam is a cut above. The Ocean Envy and Chu Chee Prawns were full of flavour and melted in our mouths! Perfectly cooked seafood.

There is seriously something special about this place. The service is awesome, their prices are so reasonable. The space is lovely and everything is fresh and good quality. The only thing is the food needs a bit more punch of flavour and some extra herbs and spices . They could push it a bit more. The prawn spring rolls are a highlight.
Anipn
Lovely venue and exceptional service. Unfortunately the food fell short. We ordered an Asian salad with soft shell crab. Huge serving, soft shell crab was lovely but the salad was one dimensional. It was a huge pile of green paw paw on top of some lettuce. It lacked flavour, no Asian herbs which it desperately needed.

Fabulous dining experience with great tasting food and friendly staff 💯

I've been to Som Tam a number of times and it's always  been consistently great. <br/><br/>Firstly it's BYO so grab a bottle...or two from Carwyn Cellars before arriving. The Son in Law eggs were amazing and the soft shell crab was out of this world good. The Phad Thai though, I found a bit bland and nothing special, hence just a 4 star rating. <br/><br/>Staff and atmosphere are great and I would suggest booking as they are a small restaurant.

YUM!<br/>Maybe I'm biased as a friend works here buuuuuuut its delicious Thai food.<br/>Certainly the best I've had in the area.<br/>A little sweet for my tooth but that is pretty standard for the cuisine.<br/>Offers a healthy serve, BYO is uncharged and is just excellent value for money overall
Louise
The place is quite small and lighting is poor, considering we went on a summer day and it wasn't too late yet (December 2018). Food is really nice, had the green curry fried rice and spring rolls - You'll get stuffed with their serving. The only downside of this place is that we were told off for being noisy and loud - but we booked the place for a bday celebration and obviously we had to sing a birthday song.. So I will not recommend this place for celebrating an occasion, but good food otherwise on any other night.

Western Thai. Overly sweet. Also the portions were quite small. <br/>Very good service though. The decor was interesting. But unfortunately we found that the food was quite average. <br/><br/><br/>
Nalia
I love my pad thai, ordering it at every Thai restaurant I visit, and unfortunately the ones here were average. The noodles were a little dry and stuck together too much, and I think it could have done with a little more sauce to bring out the usual tamarind flavours. There were some prawns and plenty of tofu, but overall the dish was a tad bland. We also had the spring rolls and the son in law which were nice (think scotch eggs except runny yolk and less crumbs in a yummy sauce). The moo satay had a decent layer of peanut sauce, although the pork itself was a little firm and not as well marinated as I've had at other restaurants.
Me
Cosy Thai restaurant down the cool end of Thornbury.<br/><br/>I think the thing that really stands out about this Thai restaurant is that everything so so fresh and nicely done. You don’t walk away feeling like you eaten stodgy food, it’s really really good.<br/><br/>I’d have to say it’s the stand out Thai in the area.
Reviewer
Lovely food and good decor. Very attentive and polite service which was extremely efficient. Nice touch of a complementary starter while perusing the menu. We had the lemongrass beef and lamb Penang- delicious!

Tend to get Thai cuisine as takeaway but with such good reviews I wanted to try this place and eat in.<br/>Unfortunately it was very average.Myself and my mum ordered 2 entrees..the corn cakes and prawn something (like a prawn cake). Both these dishes were in no way Thai..both lacked any sort of flavor and were bland bland bland. The corn cakes were huge (think bigger than the palm of your hand and very thick) and had been over cooked so as a result they were dry and very crunchy and mainly just a ton of corn kernels. <br/>Shared Pad Thai as a main..serving was huge for 2 with lots of prawns and tofu but once again bland! No flavours that you would typically expect from this famous dish. The large serving was nowhere near demolished because it simply wasn’t worth it.<br/>I feel bad for saying it but I have had better packet Pad Thai sauces from the supermarket and made at home. Plus having recently been to Thailand and lived off the stuff you know how it should taste.<br/>To finish on a positive note though, service was very attentive and staff welcoming and friendly. <br/>Given there are so many dining options in Northcote and Thornbury this place I won’t be recommending as a must visit.<br/>

Among the best Thai in Melbourne! The whole fried snapper presentation and taste was stunning. We were welcomed with a taster of papaya salad. The red duck curry was not really spicy (enough for us) but rich with vegetables. Service was friendly and prompt.

The food is always fresh and full of flavour. The price is very reasonable, for the quality of food you get it’s great. Probably the best Thai restaurant i have been to in Melbourne. Can’t go wrong with this place.
Rhysie21
Great local eat - Delicious authentic thai with no MSG. Pad se ew was the best we've had and the red duck curry was full of flavour. Definitely worth visiting, we will be back many times.

For somewhere that is a Thai restaurant, the food is extremely lacking in spice. The som tam which is supposedly their signature dish was over sweetened and seriously lacking in spice and flavour. The salted crab seemed like it was sprinkled on the som tam as an afterthought. The pad krapow while not having an offensive flavour was incredibly lacking in spice. The steamed fish, while tasting ok was again incredibly lacking in spice. Not an authentic Thai restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. Would not recommend. Anyone wanting good som tam should check Tom Toon in Abbotsford.
Markmazzeo4
Great Thai family restaurant with awesome atmosphere. Love how the food is cooked fresh and is so tasty with no msg and is gluten free! Has a real authentic Thai taste and feel with friendly helpful staff. Must have dishes are pork belly, massamun beef curry and the ocean envy. Leave room for dessert!
Split The Bill
Som Tam was a recommendation from a few friends so we thought we would try it out, after all we love<br/>Thai food! 💚<br/>We started off with a selection of entrees which included spring rolls. Everything came out in a timely fashion and was hot and tasty.<br/>There were a variety of main dishes ordered but the majority of us ordered the Pad Thai. I loved the flavours but was not too sure about the King Prawn lying across the dish, looking at me! But the noodles combined with shrimp, prawn and egg was delicious.<br/>The Green curry was also delicious with lovely spices. The food was a hit.<br/>As we were a party of 15 a few things unfortunately went wrong, I guess this happens when there’s a few mouths to feed. My friend waited for her meal over 20 minutes longer than the rest of us. They did eventually bring it out but my friend missed out on having her main meal with us.<br/>Then when it came to the bill, luckily we had an accountant at the party using her skills. We had been charged for an extra Pad Thai and a starter! This was fixed eventually but had we not checked the bill then we would have been overcharged. Apart from this we loved the food and flavours. I have given it a 3/5 because of the misdemeanours.

Love Som Tam! Everything in the menu is really nice but the Massaman curry is absolutely fantastic! Beef is super tender and the taste is just perfect! Good service and nice atmosphere
Nikki M.
Small modern thai restaurant with a not your ordinary asian takeaway place ambience. The place has dimmed lights, exposed bricks and plays good music. Apart from the regular menu, lunch specials are also offered - $10 for a delicious meal. A good place to have a quiet lunch but this place can get really busy during evenings.
Jjaass
Small ,clean little place , friendly service. The food was fresh . Didn't taste the heat of proper thai food. Wasnt sure of the larb which was served as a rissole type dish. Meh
Deb Taylor
Everyone in our group really enjoyed the dishes we ordered, very nice flavours and huge portions! Friendly staff. We were able to BYO. This is a nice busy local spot

Stumbled on this place by accident...what a find. Great food and service, recommend making a booking as it can get busy. Try the duck curry...delicious!
Oj_always_eating
Delicious food!! And the staff are lovely. Food comes out quickly, and it's also BYO. The pork belly stirfry is the best! Highly recommend Som Tam for a lovely night out 👌🏻

A lovely little restaurant, friendly, helpful staff, very quick service. Dishes have been fresh, beautifully cooked with really interesting flavours and zingy flavours, I have twice this week with dinner companions who has also thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful little restaurant, reasonable prices.  The space is a little cold (temperature). Very nice we will be back.

Finally a quality Thai restaurant in Thornbury! Green curry fried rice was great with delicious flavor. Massaman curry was delicious, loved that their green veggies dish was a variety of good greens with a beautiful hint of char. Will be going back for sure!
Aprilmelat
I love Som Tam! Especially their Pad Thai which is a reasonable price since it's so good. Their staff are friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is nice inside and everything is delicious

A newbie to Thornbury so checking out the scene is in order. Love Thai food so first stop is this venue. We ordered tom yum gai, pad thai, penang lamb curry and fried snapper. Food was ok but a little disappointed that the food is not traditional in taste.  Though the girls working there were pleasant and helpful but not sure if we will return simply because we prefer traditional Thai flovours

If it's authentic Thai flavours you're looking for, Som Tam is the place to go. We started with some prawns in a beautiful sweet and sour dressing that took me back to the restaurants in Thailand and my own kitchen where I love cooking my favourite Thai dishes. We also sampled a range of other dishes, all of which were satisfying in flavour and boasted fresh ingredients. My only gripe about this place is the service. The wait staff were not the most attentive to our table of 8. One of the guests did not receive their meal until the rest of us were almost finished.

Ordered take away and was not disappointed.<br/>Tom yum soup delicious <br/>Crispy pork with Asian greens delicious <br/>Green curry friend rice delicious<br/>Massamum beef curry delicious <br/>Overall 11/10 <br/>Will definitely be going back to this little hidden gem.<br/>GoodFood GoodMood

Had takeaways from here tonight. Quick service, reasonable prices and friendly staff. The food was great, loved the crispy pork and the duck curry, so delicious. Was excited to try the son in law eggs, these were the only disappointment, flavour great but not an item that does well for takeaway, not crispy. Will have to eat in some time to try them again. Highly recommend
Ally
Delicious food and friendly staff. Recommend the prawn spring rolls and pad Thai. My friend had the vegetarian spring rolls and a beef curry. He loved both. Recommend booking as it fills up quickly.

Splendid Thai food on the north side. Vegan options, few as they may be, are delicious. Check out the yummy yellow curry and they have another solid option or two which eludes me.
Christian
Best Thai food in melb by far. Every dish is amazing always fresh and nothing has MSG in it Winning Staff are efficient and very friendly. Can't say I have a favourite dish because they are all my favourites. Always look forward to som tam definitely the perfect go to dish. I have travelled to Thailand many times and som tam is on par or sometimes even better then Thailand itself. A credit to them. <br/><br/>

Best thai restaurant you'll find in Melbourne. Great food, great service. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Make sure to book ahead to not miss out!

reviews seem pretty good, went and order take away food. Ordered Com Tam and Pad Thai, both pretty average, worst Pad Thai ever. Com tam is not too bad, the taste is very new to me.

This is the third time we've been here. First time was great. Second time after having made a reservation they crammed us in, they couldn't find our name even though they had confirmed our booking! Got there this evening and they didn't even have us down :( and that's after having called yesterday to book!<br/>We live around the corner from this place and will not be going back! Clearly there is break down in communication between the person taking the bookings and the people allocating the tables!

Very friendly and efficient service. Food was great and portion sizes spot on. Menu has all your traditional Thai favourites as well as some excellent specials - the corn fritters were a stand out. Definitely be going back.

On High Street Thornbury, lies this little black complex which is Som Tam. <br/><br/>I came here last night with a couple of friends for one of my favourite cuisines which is THAI! <br/><br/>Evident when walking in by the beautiful smell my friends and I were in for a great night. <br/><br/>I have to admit, it's a pretty small restaurant. However the place was extremely packed. <br/><br/>Dishes kept on coming through vigorously and one thing caught my friends eyes which were the spring rolls. <br/><br/>Looking through the whole menu, most of the dishes looks appealing. My friends and I ordered as follows:<br/><br/>Moo Satay <br/>Prawn Spring Rolls<br/>"Special" (Prawn Patties)<br/>Tom Yum Soup<br/>Kana Moo Krob<br/>Massamum Beef Curry<br/>Coconut Rice<br/><br/>First of all, I have had lots of beautiful peanut sauce satay skewers and with regards to this restaurants skewers they seriously were a let down. The meat was cooked well but the sauce on top was really gritty, thick and didn't have a great peanut taste to it. <br/><br/>The spring rolls were great and the sauce had a lovely consistency and was a perfect dipping sauce for the rolls. <br/><br/>The Tom Yum soup had such a kick of flavour and the prawn were delicious. <br/><br/>In relation to the Kana Moo Krob both my friends did have different opinions on it. One though it was sickly sweet and couldn't finish the dish and the other added flat noodles with no chillies and loved it. So a bit of a hit and miss. I couldn't try it because I was allergic to one of the ingredients inside the plate. <br/><br/>The curry had such an extravagant flavour to it, the braised beef was perfect and the added carrot was simply genius. <br/><br/>Lastly the coconut rice. When it came to the table I questioned the waiter to ask if it actually was coconut rice because it was pink/black looking and didn't have no distinctive smell of coconut in it. The waiter did tell me that it was. I have to say it was my least favourite dish I ordered. It was not creamy and not what I'm used to. It exuded no purpose to my curry and really had no flavour. <br/><br/>All in all, a cute little place in the heart of Thornbury, had some great things on the menu. But the place needs to balance flavours and work on the coconut rice in my opinion.

Authentic thai food... the quality of the products used seem to be of high quality... steamed barramundi and chu chi prawn curry are highly recommended... cant wait to get back..

Not your average local Thai, these guys go the extra mile with quality ingredients and it really makes all the difference! Lovely to eat in or get take away. Keep up the great work 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Som Tam is great addition to the Thornbury dining scene offering a step above your average Thai food. We ordered the Massamun Beef Curry, the Pad Thai and the Som Tam. We liked all of the dishes. The Pad Thai had full size prawns that were well cooked and delicious (which goes back to the "step above" comment). The beef portions in the curry were good quality and large (which is something I always look for in Thai food) and the Som Tam was tasty with a good amount of heat. We will keep coming back!

Friendly service, clean environment, tasty food, but to be honest, nothing spectacular. I would have given them 4/5 except for the fact that they messed up our order. Will probably try again, just for luck.
Raju
Good honest Thai food, bit pricey but definitely good quality and worth it. A word of warning for faint hearted, real thai cuisine is a bit hot!
Curlsgurl
I've been looking forward to trying this place for ages. My partner and I decided to eat here last night.<br/>It surpassed our expectations. Food was lovely and tasty with a good zing. A great menu that is a far cry from the predictable choices of many Thai restaurants. Nice staff too.
Zomatoaddict
Took my parents here tonight as Dad wanted to have Thai dinner ! Very tasty, fresh ingredients , friendly staff, warm atmosphere, delicious green tea ice cream too . Will defiantly come back
Chloe Cakes
Went here on a whim. Good service, reasonably priced, nice variety and lovely fresh thai food.  The Pad Krapao could be a little spicier though! Place is great though. Casual and comfortable without being cheap and trashy. Would definitely come here again!
Chardos
Chinese broc, it's a lot, comes wit the pork belly<br/>Bit of crunch, for your lunch, gotta get inside the belly<br/>Next up had the Fried rice with the green curry<br/>Creative, innovative had to down it in a hurry<br/><br/>
Jm
Very busy<br/>So if you haven't booked it's hard to walk in<br/>Interesting dishes - modern Thai<br/>Nice atmosphere too<br/>Watch out for the chillies! Some Very spicy dishes
Joyce
I love the sticky rice. But it depends on the chef‘s mood. Sometime, I could get the sticky rice in sticky and soft serve, but sometime I would get rock hard and dry.......
Live_in_melbourne
It was a great night going out with a group of friends here and tried different dishes. The portion and taste was ok, not too bad. Food came out pretty quick and the service was nice.
Dibs
The interior was great but the food was nothing special, the Pad Thai was sickly sweet and was all bean shoots and hardly any noodle.<br/>The are better local Thai restaurants than this.
Tofubrain
Seems to be more of a modern Thai restaurant. Food sits on the sweeter side that I'm not a fan of. I ordered extra spicy but it was still very mild. However, it has a splendid ambience.
Anita
This was probably one of the best Thai places i have been to. Highly reccomended the stir fry with crispy pork.. the flavour was great and the pork crispy!
Miss E
Absolutely delicious, fresh Thai food. Probably the best I have had in a very long time. The service was great also which is always a bonus! A gem in the Thornbury area!
Luke
I've been wanting to try Som Tam for a while now and finally had it the other night (takeaway). It was delicious, nice and fresh flavours - the pad Thai was great as was the Massaman Curry! Will definitely be going back...
Jay
Recently got take away from Som Tam and it was full of taste! Best Thai I have had yet. I definitely recommend it! Looking forward to dining in the restaurant next :)

Som Tam has delivered yet again. I've been to this restaurant maybe 5 times and not once have I left disappointed. Great variety of Thai food with dishes full of amazing flavours and spices. I've never gotten excited about prawns before but those poached prawns with the spicy salad have changed the way I think about shellfish. 95% of my week has been spent reminiscing on this delicious food, I could eat here breakfast lunch and dinner. #gregontour new local Thai 🍻🍭

My local and real Thai delight. Cannot go past the beef massamun and the lamb panang!! Gets very busy so it is a good idea to book in advance. The service is always friendly and prompt also.
Duala
We have been there more than a couple of times already and it has been consistently good. Flavours are nice and fresh the service quick and friendly.
Two Sheds
Very nice Thai food. Our group of six got takeaway and couldn't fault one dish. Very happy with the very reasonable prices too. Much to like here.
Hungry-Caterpillar
Amazing food, better than Thailand!! <br/>Jungle curry personal favourite. Had several dishes on the menu. All amazing. So lucky to have this restaurant in our local area. Been telling all our friends about it. Sparkling house wine also nice if you enjoy a bubbly.
Melissa Kerlin
Went here for dinner last night - we have been meaning to try it for ages! It was definitely worth the wait! The staff were very attentive, the restaurant itself is lovely. We had a small salad to start which was great. I ordered the pork belly stir fry and couldn't fault it. We also ordered various entrees all of which were delicious. I thought the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. I will be back here for sure, I cant wait to work my way through the rest of the menu.
Have Hunger, Will Travel
You can't beat this place for quality and freshness. When I eat at Som Tam, I don't leave with the lingering feeling that I was just served Mae Ploy with a little Palm Sugar and veg. But, the servings are just too small, even for someone who considers themself a light eater. This food is so good, I want more. But that's just what you won't get here.
SueyLuey
Was here last week on a rainy day which wasnt fit for the thornbury foodtruck..<br/><br/>Quirky little restaurant on high st. Very inviting. The service is lovely, the girls are thai i think?? Only problem was it was a very humidy day so the restaurant got a bit too stuffy.. <br/><br/>Shared with a few girls and we ordered a variety of the usual thai dishes like roti/chicken skewers and peanut sauce which was delicious! Definitely a must for starters even though we got it throughout the service not as entree? Dont know what happened there...<br/><br/>Gave us sticky rice which if we had realised we would have ordered less rice servings because we had way too much.. But the coconut rice was really tasty! <br/><br/>Duck curry and green chicken curry was delicious. Good size serving for 4 people. The pad thai looked ok and tasted better. The soft shell crab papaya salad is a must try also! <br/><br/>Nomnom... Will definitely return when i have another thai craving!<br/><br/>Overall a good thai place in the north.
Abir Chowdhury
The best things about this place were the rustic plates. The tom yum was extremely sour and sweet, while our mains took more than forty minutes to arrive! When they did arrive, they were lacking in flavour, which added insult to injury. The plates that the food arrived on did look cool, though.
The Whippeteers
Soooo excited to be at Som Tam tonight. We enjoyed our experience.<br/><br/>Venue/service - faultless.<br/>Food - impeccable quality. Sometimes a bit rich in flavor.<br/>Ambience - chilled Jazz music, most pleasant!<br/><br/>Dishes:<br/><br/>- "Red curry roast duck" with jasmine red rice - tasty, not memorable.<br/>- "Jungle curry" with coconut red rice. (I asked for it to be hot "Try to kill me" was what i told the waitress. As if people say that everyday, she noted my request without missing a beat). And it was super chili hot, so i didn't need to pull out the sauce in my bag. With the coconut rice the flavours were a tad rich. May be better with a plain rice.<br/><br/>Value for money - pricey We feel that for the price, rice should be included. Also the serving size was a bit small.<br/><br/>

After tasting one dish, awesomely Authentic Thai Food, just BYO your wines ....<br/><br/>This place is located along what could be the longest esplanade of food in Melbourne or Australia or even the world .... the building doesn't looked prominent, must really looked for it or have the address on your GPS.<br/><br/>I just happened to drive pass, the name is so catchy Som Tam which is Papaya Salad in Thai so I stop for lunch.<br/><br/>It was a great decision, this Vintage building is tastely renovated, not over-doing it, very smart, great layout, the interior is so simple yet warm and very inviting, just a great ambiance. All those vintage elements are still there blending in with the modern decor. The long dining table at the back Courtyard is stunning.<br/>You will enjoy their Toilets too, stunningly renovated and fitted, WELL DONE!<br/><br/>On the wine by the glass, the Riesling was a disappointment though, next time I shall BYO.<br/><br/>Now to the food, based on one dish alone, Massaman Beef Curry with Jasberry Rice (Red Rice) at $10.90 - Lunch Special Menu, I can say that the Chef can cook authentic Thai. Curry flavour was balanced, not overpowering sweet nor too coconutty, other spices are prominent, just right, Beef was tender, Sweet potatoes not mushy. Enough curiosity to come back for more.<br/><br/>Looking forward to coming back for either Lunch or Dinner so I can order more.<br/><br/>Quite an enjoyable lunch, thank you Chef!
Two Bears And A Fork
We can't believe we haven't done a review for Som Tam yet! We've been here at least half-a-dozen times and have tried heaps on the menu! The food standouts? The green papaya salad is DELICIOUS! I always get the Yellow Curry which is pretty standard, but my carnivore hubby and friends say the winning meat dishes are: Red Curry Roast Duck and the Fried Snapper. The fit-out is trendy, minimal and it can get really loud in there (especially if we're there! haha!) but is a great example of what Thai restaurants should be. I don't want to forget mentioning the service here too - amazing! I know this is a once-off circumstance, but I lost a diamond hoop earring (gift from my mother) and was quite bummed as I couldn't find it after tearing through the entire restaurant. So I left my name & number (and a little drawing of what it looked like) and then a couple of weeks later they rang to tell me they found it - that was so awesome they kept my details and called! Food - two thumbs up! Service - two thumbs up!
Stevie
One of the best Pad Thai noodles I have ever had...it is something I regularly order here and in Thailand!<br/>everything we ordered had really nice flavours, reasonably priced and nice decor.<br/>service is also great.

4th visit<br/>My favourite local Thai restaurant, friendly and attentive staff.<br/><br/>Deep fried snapper, love the side salad, very refreshing but I think the spicyness was overpowered the flavour, love the cashew nut, very fresh and crunchy, love the chilies prepared on the side bowl, so you can adjust how much to eat.<br/><br/>The stir fried basil with chicken, personally I don't like chicken breast as it can be quite dry but not in this dish, love the fact they sliced the chicken quite thinly, very well balanced dish.<br/><br/>I always love the jasmine rice- jerryberry rice I think it called on the menu.<br/><br/><br/>3rd visit<br/>This time ordered lamb panang curry with pumpkin, i wish it could be a little more spicer, the lamb was soft and tender.<br/><br/>The stir fried broccoli with roast pork, very crunchy snd fresh broccoli, personally find it a little salty by eating alone, but mix well with rice. I think they also used some black bean sauce which quite flavoursome.<br/><br/>Great as always.<br/><br/>2nd visit<br/>This time ordered the stir fried noodle with chicken, peppercorn and basil leave, taste good but I wish to have more chillies to lift up the spicyness. Partner ordered stir fried rice with dried shrimp paste and pork, taste good too.<br/>If you compare the price with other restaurants, their price is relatively higher with the food portion. <br/>Just realised the take away dishes are $1- $3 cheaper than dining in, no wonder so many came in to take away instead.<br/><br/>1st visit<br/>Som Tam complimentary dish papaya salad 10/10<br/>Larb Tod deep fried chopped chicken with Asian herbs 9/10<br/>Deep fried corn patties 10/10 I like this one more than the deep fried chicken although the dish quite similar, very crunchy<br/>Red curry roast duck 9/10 if they put lychee and add a little more spicy would be great<br/>Tom som pla soup 1/10 I only can score this as too salty to me that I can't really taste anything else, but good to see they use good fish fillet for the soup rather than the standard basa fish fillet<br/>Staff friendly and nice 10/10<br/>Environment 10/10<br/>Great decor and booking definitely is required to avoid disappointment.

We managed to get a table when our previous dining plan fell through. Judging by the reviews we were lucky. They started with complimentary Som Tam special green papaya salad which was very tasty. The food was very nice we had starters of Son in Law Eggs which were very good and prawn spring roll, which was a solid piece of prawn in spring roll wrapper. For mains a Massaman Beef Curry which was very mild, a flavoursome Lemongrass Beef stir fry and the Som Tam with soft shell crab. The salad part was good (but we had already had that's) and the crab wasn't bad but I probably wouldn't choose it again. It cost $100 for four of us to leave satisfied. The staff were friendly and very attentive.
Vince
Wow food here is amazing! Love this place and what it stands for with all good clean of msg..love the curries and the complimentary som tam. Fit out very cool and staff all very friendly. Som Tam has set the benchmark for all Thai restaurants.
Cheezles
Fit out was fantastic as was the service but we found the food to be  just above average. Pad See Ew, whilst cooked well lacked flavour and the Green Curry was a bit too sweet for our liking. That being said the ingredients were of high quality so we are keen to work our way through the menu.
Northernbell

I and my friends have been this nice restaurant a few times since they have opened at least once a month cuz it's such a perfect spot for us to catch up especially the taste of foods been impressed us...<br/>Last week, we(two of us) been there again for lunch and everything still was great...we asked the male manager who always nice & friendly to sit at the back, he served us immediately and we really enjoyed our plenty of good foods on that day...next day we and more friends been there again for our dinner and same great!<br/>Just a few days ago, we recommended our friend to this good restaurant then catch up for lunch...we arrived early than her a bit...mentioned to the female manager that our friend will come with her little baby and one pram...just worried about the space for our seats so didn't want to disturb others table as well so we thought at the back should be suited for us...she seem a bit hesitate (at that time it wasn't busy) but gave us a table at the back and said will come to served us shortly...around 15 mins she sent her staff who was working in the kitchen to served us...what we heard from the kitchen was a female chef told that friendly staff to ask us to move inside cuz no one couldn't serve us at the back, they short of staffs and at that time wasn't busy we should to have a table inside...<br/>After that, we been moved inside with many eyes looking at us cuz they needed to move tables and chairs to gave us a space to have our seats...we had a table infront of the door which was opened - closed almost the time...even us felt cold...just wondered how about my little girl!?<br/>1.why that female manager on that day couldn't served us at the back <br/>2.why she asked her staff who was working in the kitchen to do her job if in the kitchen short of staff like a female chef shout out loud when she was loosing one of her man power <br/>3. Should you communicate each other between the front and the kitchen 4.should you out of service at the back when you can't serve customers...<br/>Actually at the end of this month I'd like to organise my bd party at this (my ex favourite) restaurant but after asked my friends who were with me on that day, they all was totally upset :(<br/>To make this fair, I still like the taste of food, all of Thai friendly staffs (waiters and waitress) and the friendly male manager...Good luck!

Waited 30mins for takeaway on a Tuesday night, didn't get an apology. Bad customer service

Authentic Thai cooking in a nice-friendly place.. Authentic Thai cooking techniques just like the foods I've had in my home country. The healthy food tasted great. The place is well decorated and clean. A good place to hang out in the night time.

Good food & nice friendly staff. So glad a good Thai is now in my local area! Only problem is too many people know about this place now - it's hard to get in!!!!

Amazinggggg thai food!. You really can not go past the Ocean Envy. Beautifully cooked seafood in a tasty sauce.<br/><br/>Thai fried rice had real prawns! not those tiny shrimp that most places use.<br/><br/>High recommended to book and eat in, rather than get takeaway :)

Best thai food in Melbourne. I would like rather say it was terrible so it doesn't get over crowded but it is best thia food in melbourne not just because the food is great also because the food is different from other thia serving same old food. This place has the courage to not even serve spring rolls.

Best Thai in Melbourne!. Beautiful Thai food, packed with flavour. It's far and away the best Thai food I've found outside of Thailand. Add an added bonus, it's pretty cheap too! Seems to be a victim of its own success, so book ahead! Can't wait to go back!

Delicious.

We loved it! Ordered the chicken satay entree as others had suggested, and they were really yummy. Ordered the steamed fish and green curry fried rice, perfect, authentic flavours. Lovely staff, interior and prices are reasonable. Great work!

Great food & atmosphere - Recommended. It was probably the 2nd or 3rd time I have eaten Thai food. My friend had recommended Som Tam for the next time we go out so we went. He kept telling me that this place doesn't use MSG and to keep it in mind. Anyway, we arrived there at around 8pm expecting things to have died down a little but we were wrong. I don't usually like crowded places; it gets too hot and noisy but to my liking this was not the case. The atmosphere was great, not too formal but nice. Now I wasn't sure what to expect with the food. As I said my friend kept telling me there is no MSG in the food and that it will taste more natural. I wasn't sure what he meant until we ate the food. It was really great! Everything was fresh and gave flavour. The roti bread with the peanut sauce was great (Make sure you try that peanut sauce!). We also had Som Tam (my first time), Red Curry Roast duck (Duck was moist) and the black rice to go with it (comes in a mini chassuer pot and flavour went well with the sauce from the red curry). The staff were great and also friendly. <br/><br/>I really did enjoy the Som Tam experience. Everything was great from my point of view. I don't eat a lot of Thai or Asian food but I really did enjoy it. I am glad my friend brought me here and would recommend you give this place a try.

Poor service but still worth it for the food!. The good was very good bar a couple of things - the eggplant in the salad was raw (Yuk!) & the 'signature salad' was not amazing. Other than that the massaman curry was delicious, pad see ew very tasty & the satay chicken starter amazing!! Would go again... Just wouldn't get the salad. <br/>Oh, and the service was poor... Hardly any attention, we're needing more drinks & food all night!

Thai Heaven. We have tried without luck to get into Som Tam for several months and after finally thanks to making a booking we got our table. So, I will start with the service and I have to be honest, it was a little lacking. We were sat for sometime surrounded by our BYO wine (no corkage!!) before catching the waiter's attention to get our bottles opened. Apparently the owner was not in on our night and the service is normally quite slick.<br/>Anyway, onto the food and this is the good bit. The food is delicious!! The Son-in-law egg is a must have as is the larb. For main you must have the pork belly stir-fry - it is sweet and caramelised to perfection. The som tam special salad is incredibly flavorsome and the beef mussaman curry is one of the best we have tasted. We also had the pad Thai which lived up to our expectations. <br/>Stuffed with food, the bill was $30 a head, cheap as chips but oh so much better! <br/>Remember your booking as you won't get in otherwise and now we know why.....

Great Thai restaurant in Thornbury. Four of us went to Som Tam for dinner. We were so impressed with the food served. Awesome food and lovely attentive service. This restaurant is one of the best Thai place we have tried in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I will definitely go back there soon.

Best Thai!. I'm just disappointed we took so long to get to Som Tam given it is at the end of our street. The duck curry was sublime, will definitely be going back for more.

Delicious food! Portions a little smaller than some places, but this just means you have the right amount of food rather than too much. Will be going back!

This place has definitely gone downhill. The staff have no idea as in do not understand English nor do they understand your requirements. Ordered my old time favourite the Chu Chi Prawns and was so disappointed as the sauce on the base of the dish was cold. And no rice as ordered with my meal. I explained to the waitress and she kindly took my plate away and explained the meal was to come with the black sticky rice. Still waiting they served my partner and my son their meals and still waiting For my meals almost ten minutes later. I called the head waiter or floor manager and he apologised for the delay, checked with the kitchen and came back to say that the meal will be one minute. The meal was finally served and still no rice. The same issue.., the sauce on the base was cold. I asked the waitress what happened when she took the original meal and she said that the meal was cold. I called the floor manager again and he apologised and offered to remake my meal. By this time my partner and my son had almost finished theirs. I explained why this meal was initially returned and still the same issue. Please feed this back to the chef and staff.
