We enjoyed a Git it in to you menu this evening and couldn’t rate it highly enough
The food and drinks were on point
Our waitress, Bonnie was an absolute star with attention to detail, good banter and a hot toddie on hand to soothe a sore throat
Thanks for another great night guys
Amazing staff, delicious meats (especially the pig head ) and the best desserts we’ve had in a long time (special mention the creme brûlée and doughnuts will definitely recommend to others and will be back!
Probably the best proper English Sunday roast I've had in Melbourne. Great wait staff, so friendly. Definitely recommend it a great place to catch up with friends.
Northern Git is a place that ticks all the boxes, great food, exceptional service, ambience, great selection of drinks, quality, quantity, variety and everything is absolutely spot on. My family, friends and I have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and just because and I cannot recommend it enough. Bravo on your stellar service and amazing dishes and looking forward to the beer garden.
Great quality food and wine, had the meat plate, iceberg salad and sampled my friends gnocchi, burger and croquettes. All amazing!! Service was a bit slow but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment levels.
Simply Sensational! Thank you very much to Michael & Karine, for both of your amazing service, and honest, super tasty homely food... and Michael.... that aged beef - mate - my mouth is still watering just thinking about it! Highly recommend the Git - Great Beer, Great Wine, Great Service and simply AMAZING farm to table homemade food! WOW! Get-a-Git!!
I love this place. It feels just right, the owners work the kitchen and the front of house, the beer and wine list matches the food very well and the product that comes out of the kitchen is great! Always good quality and well balanced plates of food , delivered by friendly and enthusiastic staff.
Donald Trump has never eaten here to my knowledge so what could be better. Get yourselves to the Git!!!!
A beautiful welcome, a fantastic menu passionately explained, with excellent food. Service was the best and we will definately be back to try all the other great dishes on the menu.
Friendly staff and excellent food made for a great lunch. The actual venue is beautiful. And how about the wine on tap!
Great food and very friendly service. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding to die for
A hidden Gem beautiful food great variety and specials on the menu huge servings fantastic and attentive service will definitely be back
The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. Big thanks to our waiter Chris for his attention to detail.
I had a big birthday bash at the Git & I can't thank them enough for making my night so memorable. We booked out the courtyard which was the perfect pretty backdrop for the event. The food was Ah-mazing - Wendy & the team looked after us so I was able to enjoy the copious cocktails stress free. Service was A+. The only negative is it's over! Absolutely recommend for a celebratory night you won't forget x
Prawns delicious....Steak to die for, best pork schnit and not to mention the #fries..yum! Staff were lovely and very informative. Great atmosphere! We'll be back!
Great eggplant parmigana & hashtag fries. Lovely bloke recommended a great light red wine to go with. My husband loved his blue eye fish meal. Great atmosphere too.
Great restaurant/ bar. Food was really really good! Especially the pie! Servings were small so make sure you get an entree or some sides. Pricing good. Best part was the service! 10/10 for service. Couldn’t have been more welcoming.
Friendly service and delicious food. We loved the variety of dishes available and our waiter arranged our dishes to come out in a 3 course setting instead of all at once. We loved the steak and was really impressed with their special of the night (skirt steak cooked raw). The 40 day dry age min was impressive. Special mention to their salads that came with the eggplant and schnitzel. We loved the flavour combo. The eggplant was amazing and the flavour of the garlic prawns went well with the dipping bread. We had a great time and all left satisfied. Highly recommend getting dishes to share so everyone can try their great selection. Thanks guys!
Enjoyable lunch. Had the roast of the day (lamb) and pork roll with crackling. Both were really tasty, but enjoyed the pork just a little bit more. Place is nice and clean with very friendly staff. Other items on the menu sound good so I'll be back to try them out
The food here is always brilliant, everything is a safe bet! my partner and I always share the Meat Plate. The Brisket, the new dick dish and the steaks are wonderful. Staff is always friendly and helpful, a surprisingly relaxed feel for food this good, it just makes it homey and comfortable! love it!
I can't fault the place for warm and welcomingness, even on days when I feel like my face would shock the nation. The menu is quality, and in all honesty they've served the most flavoursome Aubergine Parmagiana I've had in all of Melbourne. Their pastry, gravies, meats are also delicious. Their tap beer is second to none - although a little over-priced even though its imported, and their wine and gin offerings are something to write home about.
Lovely Sunday roast, very efficient and friendly staff. Starters of croquettes and blue cheese focaccia were gorgeous and roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings was beautiful. 😊
No room for pudding, but menu looked lovely for sweets too. 👍
Amazing food! Many gluten free options great service and best roast dinner I have had in a restaurant EVER! Need a nap now definitely going back. Great Sunday lunch 👍👍👍
Great food and desserts. The sunday roast was the perfect roast on a sunday. The desserts were great too.Good service and selection of beers too.Only negative thing was we waited a little while for food to come out as they were busy but it was worth the wait
Being a Northern Git myself it was nice to come here and feel connected to the menu. The restaurant itself is set up well and there’s plenty of options on both the food and drink. We’ve been here twice now and worked through a few of the items, the seafood stew was amazing, the gnocchi, the brisket and the suet pie which was enough to send you to sleep it’s that heavy (but bloody lovely!) a good selection of ales to accompany the great food. The only minor issue is that the service is inconsistent. Would highly recommend, especially for an event/party as the space is adequate. Give it a go.
Came here last weekend. Being a Lancashire lad I was keen to give the hot pot a run and it didn’t disappoint! Backed up with some Sam Smiths ales you cannot go wrong. Party I was with had the pork belly which seemed to hit the spot along with the meat plate starter, the duck parfait was EXCELLENT. Will be back in the future. Nice work guys!
Fantastic experience. Foolishly my partner and I didn’t book and instead chanced it on Valentine’s Day. Due to this all the tables were gone however we were encouraged to sit at the bar, which turned out to be fantastic. Great, warm and knowledgeable bar and wait staff. The food was sensational. On the staffs recommendation we tried a set menu, including a lot of things we wouldn’t normally order...this was a definite winner.
A really memorable and fun night, will definitely be back
This place... hands down BEST place Ive eaten at in a long time. The wines here are devine, the service is 100% and the food.. unfortunately when you are a chef you are beyond critical but I have to say I wasn't disappointed. The steak hands down melted in my mouth. Steak cooked at room temperature as it should be, and well seasoned and cooked to perfection. We finished with cheese and wine and I being huge steak lover.. I wasnt sure what was better. The cheese had side accompaints which lifted the cheese to another level. Honestly.. I truely love this place. To find a reataurants that treats their food with such respect... best place north of the burbs!
I grew up on a cattle farm and am fussy when it comes to steak! My partner and I came here for our anniversary dinner as the steak was highly rated online. We were not disappointed!
The steak was cooked perfectly and was good quality beef.
The staff accomodated all our needs and were friendly too.
The service was fantastic and overall the meal was good. We were a bit disappointed in the pork crackling - we found it a tad dry. The steaks were delicious and cooked exactly as we ordered. We will be returning.
All I can say is steak! steak! steak! So delicious, tender, smokey and totally sumptuous. We got the feed me menu and standouts aside from the steak were the mushroom and goats cheese croquettes, watermelon and feta salad and in house beef jerky. Great selection of beers on tap and super lovely and attentive staff. We'll be back!!!
Scotch fillet 11 out 10 !Perfectly cooked!Entree to die for :octopus and chorizo and a serve of handmade arancini! Also great selection of beer!
Service higly professional and really helpful.
I 'll be back soon.
Fantastic job guys!
Very good food, creative, well seasoned and very good value for money if ordering the ‘Git it in ya menu. The steak and dessert course were out of this world. Would highly recommend.
Good food, interesting specials choices.
Attentive service
The policy around splitting bills means I won’t come back. I eat out with friends, we don’t pool our funds together. We generally pay with card, it’s generally not an issue, save for about 15 percent of places. We wanted to pay with two cards. We were told they are unable to facilitate this and we were told there is an atm down the road we could use. It really isn’t acceptable to tell/require customers to walk down the street to pay your bill when the customer has a method of payment in their hand - that you are choosing not to accept, presumably to save a few cents. Absorb the cost of the two, three or five transactions that you might incur when people want to use cards to pay the bill. That is what the majority of businesses do in the name of customer service. I imagine a simple cost benefit analysis would show that this would mean more business for you.
Honestly it's an absolute treat to eat here! The food is never a let down. The drinks list wide in choice and the staff are super knowledgeable and are great at guiding you through the menus. Pro tip: Always order from the specials, meat plate is king 😍
Had dinner there last night, great find. We always like a place that offers revolving specials so you'll never tire of the offerings. Woman with long dreadlocks welcomed us. Very knowledgeable, welcoming enough but not authentically engaging (yes, I know it's a job). Second lady took orders, very engaging, warmer. Third lady (blonde curls) brought our bill and repeatedly (3x!) showed my SO he "can add a tip here"...
In view of their pricepoint, in view of this being Aus (not a tipping culture), pushing for that was my turnoff.
After an amazing dinner with a friend when they first opened, we decided to head over for a long lunch yesterday.
We received the same incredible service as the first time, thank you again to our lovely waitress.
Our food was epic as usual... if you're ever indecisive about the menu, let the staff guide you... they haven't let us down 😁 🤤
We came to Northern Git with family who lived within walking distance of this pub like restaurant in High Street Thornbury. I used to live this side of town about 14 years ago so I am always amazed to see how much the dining scene has really stepped up over recent years.
Northern Git with a menu designed around roasted meats is certainly amongst the more traditional restaurants we have eaten in... but not really. Yes they serve traditional English fare but they do so very inventively with a tonne of flavour packed into every serve. I went for the beef roast which came with Yorkshire pudding, roast veggies, caramelised onions, horseradish and a lake of delicious gravy. The beef was a fine thing. My non red meat eating wife had a few less options than the rest of us but ended up choosing the fish which was swimming in a pool of flavoursome buttery sauce. Pork crackling as a side but not for her!!!
We went with two kids one about three and one just a baby and the staff were great with giving us the space we needed. Had it been a little busier we may have struggled with the space, pram and all. One of the waiting staff was really chatty and friendly and helpful with both menu choice and kids (wish I knew her name so I could giver her a shoutout) The beers available were an interesting mix of craft beers and UK beers and I got to try quite a few before the day was out. We didn't partake in dessert as we were too full from our mains and the family we were with seriously over ordered so it was our duty to help them out.
Price wise this place isn't the cheap roast of the day RSL style bistro so you are paying for a little more effort going into meals. I would come here again for Father's Day perhaps... take the old man out for a roast.
Suet pastry pie to die for and a wonderful Sunday roast served with Yorkshire pudding and veggies. I've been here twice and the service is always friendly and attentive and it has a warm vibe even when it's not so busy
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, I ordered the fig and goats cheese salad as my entree and the eggplant parmigiana as my main. I absolutely loved my main course.
The food was really nice and the vibe was great. But some of the staff were quite rude so that is a bit of a let down for them. But I still had a nice well proportioned meal
We had a wonderful dinner here and recommend you try it too, I had the beef burger and it was awesome the beef was tender and delicious , my nephew had the pie and he said it was the best he had my husband had a gin and tonic and the rump and loved it, the gin and tonic came with cranberries and thought that was sooo good we are now making them that way at home.
Having opted for more of a wine/whine sort of evening, my friend and I weren't in the mood, on this occasion, to sample the menu beyond a round of "hashtag fries"*. Nevertheless we can attest to the proficiency, attentiveness and conviviality of the Northern Git front-of-house crew. Their drink recommendations, levels of service and, I hate to use the word, 'banter' were unassuming and, without exception, bang-on. Rare to find a place whose interesting and well thought-out menu is a credit to, rather than a compensation for, their team. We'll be back, appetite in tact.
* since you ask, deliciously crispy and moreish.
Great place! Great food! Great service!
Had dinner catch ups with a friend last night. We decided to get a few plates to share. We started with the meat plate & the fig special....sensational! We then moved onto the rump steak which was perfectly cooked to med rare & the beetroot salad which the waitress recommended would go perfectly with the beef & it did! Thank you! Our service was fantastic, with great food suggestions, the wait staff were very attentive without being pushy. Great job guys! We can't wait to come back!
Nice place. Full on on a Friday night. We had a negronis to start. Not cheap but luscious. We chose the banquet at $65 a head. Very nice it was too. Every dish was lovely. Standouts were the salads, the beef and the garlic prawns. Dessert was great too. There's ample food for everyone. Wine is not cheap but what there is on a shortish wine list is good. A special plug for the service. Our prime waitress knew the fine detail of every special and helped us majorly throughout the night. She was wonderful. The food is great without touching the heights. It's not cheap but the vibe is good. Glad I came. Would happily go again.
Sunday lunch and where better than to have it at home? Or at least somewhere as close to home as possible given we're on the other side of the World! Northern Git transports us back to Northern England and randomly the map on the back of Steve's menu is the exact snippet that has both our Northern home towns depicted on it. What a reminder.
Wifey and i had date night here last night. fantastic food, fantastic service, nice drinks menu and really nice ambience in the joint. Thanks for a great night!
Garlic prawns was epic!
As much as I enjoy dictating where my friends and I dine, it is often a welcome relief when someone else does the decision-making instead. Northern Git was suggested as the perfect place for a mid-week dinner, and after realising it was on my 180-page list of places I want to try in Melbourne, I started rapaciously scouring the menu – deciding at least two days in advance that we would definitely be having the spicy chicken wings with blue cheese.

I don't write reviews normally but I do use them a lot when I go out on the hunt for a great place to eat. So I thought I would give something back via the meal I had last night at the Northern Git.
Was taken by a friend who has been bothering me to come for ages and it has to be up there with one of my best food experiences of all time. First off the staff are wonderful. Not only were they professional and knowledgeable (had a great natter about riesling with the guy who served us) but they seemed really happy to be there with you, a really big thing for me in any eatery.
The drinks were top notch and its nice to see a casual restaurant that can mix a cocktail well. We both had the cocktail of the week labelled "a good morning martini", very nice. But top marks for the bottle of Italian Taurasi we had. Hadn't heard of it before but took it on recommendation and wow I was glad. After a bit of air (I think it was 2007) it opened up to be one of the tastiest $100 bottles I've had in a restaurant. We had a glass of iced chardonnay each with dessert which I ended up ordering another of.
Now the food. We had the "Git it in ya" a kind of degustation with around 7 dishes including a plate of mini desserts at the end. First up was a rabbit pate that was incredible followed by spicy carrot fritters I could have eaten a bucket of. Next a veggie salad with farro wheat as a base. I'm a prolific meat-eater but I would order this as an entree any day of the week. Next it was creamy chilli mussels, very nice and a sausage dish which we ate before we could process the ingredients explained to us by the waitress. And then the 70day dry aged steak. Hands down the best steak I've ever eaten ever! I literally went to Rockpool 3 weeks ago but this was on another level of flavour and tenderness. To finish a plate of doughnuts, sorbet, ice cream and a creme brulee, each one tasted great. I can't fault any of it, not a single thing I'd change for 7 dishes! This is the only degestation I've had were I loved every dish and for $65 its silly good value.
Unassuming, casual, warm & friendly, bags of flavour signed off on anything you put in your mouth, entered an interested customer, left feeling like a king.
I think the Northern Git is my new favourite restaurant.
Had the pork roast; it was awesome. Classic British roast with yorkshire pudding and a great uk beer selection. I think i found my roast spot
Fantastic restaurant! Great service, awesome steaks and a realy good vibe. I recommend the spanner crab and to try the steaks. We will be back.
Loved it. Great menu even for vegeterians. Fantastuc knowledgeable staff. Lovely atmosphere, good food, friendly staff. Just great place to go out for a dinner.
The warm vegetable salad ticked all of my yes, yes, yes boxes!! A must to try on a cold Friday night with friends. Follower by the mussels served with grilled ciabatta..delightful. Atmosphere was cosy, staff very friendly and food delicious and reasonably priced. We were the last ones to leave and it was so nice to see that not one of the staff told us to leave...hospitable and great staff. I will definitely be back!
Seriously good food. We have 2 kids and so it was a bonus to get there at 5 and eat early. These guys have highchairs and found staff friendly. Definitely will be back!!
Great place to go last Friday - warm, cosy and a lovely candlelit glow brought an instant feeling of welcome. Lovely staff, always friendly here but never in your way. 3 of us shared a mix of dishes. The small shares and sides let you taste a range of things which worked for us. Eggplant wedges were perfect, cauliflower and faro salad, spanner crab omelette and smoked mackerel which was the standout dish of the evening. A main course snapper special brought us some perfectly cooked fish and we were so disappointed that we didn't order the waffle fries - seemed everyone else did and they looked amazing! Overall we agreed that a lot of the dishes were saltier than they needed to be - and we aren't low salt people! There was plenty of table water so no real problem. Great choice of drinks too. We left warm, happy and full on a bitterly cold and wet winter's night - there was nothing to complain about here.
This has to be the best place to get an amazing "melt in your mouth" steak and you don't have to pay through the nose for it. Really lovely and professional service and a great atmosphere, northern git has everything you need for a great night out. Love this place.
I organised dinner here for 8 people and our entire group loved the food. From the delicious entrees too the outstanding mains and the remarkable deserts. Northern Git is a must for all lovers of food. The staff including the chef where wonderful even throwing in an extra serving of hot wings on the house. I had the fillet mignon and my only regret was I didn't ask for a larger cut of meat. The soft juice steak was the best steak I've ever had.
Has a lot of potential , great menu with plenty of interesting choices. A huge range of craft beers on tap and in bottles. Good selection of wines. The wait staff were a little slow ...it was a busy night.....but got better as the night went on. Will be back for a second opinion.
Nice service, lovely filet mignon and wine list. Ordered a side of minted peas although the mash, tuscan cabbage and onions accompanying it was more than enough for me. I love how the menu changes so frequently too. The specials are always really intriguing and interesting. It's always a pleasure for me to dine here. Great place.
Great atmosphere amd energy in this place. Food mwnu was excellent alhtough meals were a little salty. Great wines, good service but felt under staffed. Tables left with plates never a good sign. We still had a great night
I loved the comfort food here. Great that the chips came with vinegar😀 The wine was also delicious. Great place to go on a Friday night. Really friendly staff.
Wonderful Staff!! So friendly! I love the pig squeak toy that notifies the staff when food is up. Very creative and fun. We have enjoyed this restaurant twice; once along the mural wall in line with the bar (loved this table) and then another time by the back entrance to the kitchen (not loved - but ok). Menu and preparation is amazing! Only critique is that not all tables are created equal. Keep up the good work Northern Git team. :)
The food is always so good here. Try the meat plate for a shared starter. Fish of the day is also always cooked to perfection. Try a non-peak day for 5star service, otherwise they can get very busy (as expected) on the weekends.
Have been looking for a good British place in Melbourne for a while and this place certainly didn't disappoint.
I'm from Glasgow, and my partner is from Manchester so we had high expectations.
Everything from the music, to the atmosphere to the fantastic modern twist on good home cooked meals was incredible!
We had Cumberland sausages, and the pie was lamb, potato and rosemary.
Pork crackling was also a must; incredibly good home made crackling! The pastry on the pie was delicious, again home made.
The amount of good quality beers on the menu was amazing.
We were $85 for main course and desert each, plus a drink.
Best British food in the area by far!! Will be back here!
Delicious comfort food at its best! Perfect for a cold winters day. House made pie and the croquettes are hard to go past. There was a lamb stew special on once that was absolute perfection. Friendly service is always a treat.
Northern Git is an elevated pub, and we came here to try their Sunday Roast, which we shared between two. On this day the roast was chicken, and the meat was juicy and perfectly cooked. The veg were excellent too, especially the acidity from the salad which helped to bring freshness and zing to the overall plate. We also shared waffle fries, which were absolutely incredible! The service was really good. We also had a giggle every time the toy pig squeaked when the kitchen had food ready to send out.
31/01/2017: On a second visit recently, we enjoyed ourselves just as much as the first time. Everything was again excellent and so tasty. The warm beet salad and beef pie were especially amazing.
Had a quick coffee and dessert here which was very enjoyable. It was later in the evening over the weekend and it wasn't too busy but was buzzing with some local hipsters. Enjoying a couple of cups of coffee and a peice of Mille-feuille which was a poache rhubarb, honey & pistachio filo with good dollop of vanilla & sour cream vincotto that the waitress recommended we try out. So we did and it was delicious! Try it out if you're around the traps. Staff are very friendly and the setting is very warm and welcoming which makes you feel right at home. Price is fair and wouldnt mind heading back for a chill sesh and do as the locals do.
Fantastic place. It is a definite must for people who appreciate great food and service. We dined there for a dinner on Friday evening with friends. Place was buzzing with people and that didn't affect the quality of food or service. We ordered Michael's, who is chef and owner suggested platters and we were not disappointed. Our friend was vegetarian and was not left out of our selection. Michael incorporated his vegetarian requests into our meal. Corrine who runs front of house was attentive to all her customers. Wait staff showed experience and friendliness. Well done to all.

Good was really nice. It is more of a place for a group of friends to catch up rather than a date night with your partner as is quite noisy. Still a good place and recommend.
Wow, what a great meal. Extremely attentive service, and the food was sensational. We had the "get it in ya", and everything they brought out was amazing. They also catered well for gluten free requirement.
Will definitely be back!
Amazing chef who's attention to detail shows through in his dishes, great food, great service, definitely worth a visit for some traditional English grub yay!
If capital punishment was still around in Australia and they offered last meals. I'd take a serving of the pork crackling and the git steak to grace my mouth before entering the abyss known as death. A tad dramatic eh? Let's try this. The food is darn good, double darn good. What more can I say? Oh and try the beer sampler. Do it, trust me.
Really nice place this side of Northcote. Friendly service and they do get quite busy. The food is very flavoursome. Would recommend the duck patè for a starter with the pork crackling.
Such a nice place for dinner ! I had the lamb belly and was amazing ! My partner ordered the pie of the day and was really good too! Good local beers and good service
We will be back soon !
Raises the bar for what the Northern suburbs has to offer. It's so special and enjoyable going here with friends or a date.
I love...the pan-seared snapper and the lil lentil spaghetti; the beer selection; the attention to detail and care; and the lovely staff.
The service was incredibly friendly regardless of the fact it was absolutely packed! Although we had made a booking for 8:20 we had to wait till 9:00 to be seated, however had a drink at the bar while we waited. Once seated, they took our orders efficiently and food was presented beautifully; incredibly rich cuisine. Perfectly cooked. Food allergies taken care of which is always a win in my books. My partner loved the extensive beer menu and I loved the cocktails. We will be back for another date night as there were some yummies I didn't get to try!
Food was very good and service was excellent - just the right amount of attentiveness to make sure you always had a drink but without being in your face. My pork schinitzel was good but my partner was particularly happy with the eggplant parmigiana, and actually the salads were probably the best part - delicious! Will be back to try the 4 cheese souffle, the seared gnocchi and the chocolate fondant...
I have been trying a few breakfast places on high street in Thornbury. Wanted something different than a normal brunch, so decided to try this Northern Git for a proper lunch. A bit disappointed that quails were a bit under, but the fried eggplants coated w spices were really good. Would like to try the dinner menu soon.
I decided after several positive recommendations to give this place a try. It more than lived up to the recommendations. The waiting and bar staff were a blend of casual and professional and answered any questions we had about the food and different beers easily. I opted for blue grenadier which was a daily special and my partner selected a lamb pie that was also a daily special. Both were full of a blend of flavours and could only be described as yummo. We shared mash and a lettuce salad. Both were nicely flavoured and I would have again. By this time we were a bit full but decided to share the porter pudding. Again there was plently of flavour and one was enough for two although I would happily have kept it all for myself. I cannot wait to get back to this establishment to try some of the other items on the menu.

I enjoyed everything about Northern Git tonight, the waiter/waitress are very attentive. The food 5⭐️ my partner loved his Porterhouse, I enjoyed my Gnocchi
The dessert was awesome.
Amazingly good Sunday roast with great service and surrounds to match. A real gem - can't wait to go back.
Such a lovely restaurant. My mother and I visited here recently after being recommended the place multiple times as we are from North East England. The staff were really amazing and so nice! They even picked up our accent immediately (usually we get asked if we are Scottish or Irish...) The mussels were beautiful but could have done with slightly more flavour. I've heard amazing things about the Sunday roast though!
Through my many years in Australia I have searched far and wide for the perfect English roast and last Sunday I found it. I sat quietly a tear trickling down my cheek as the perfect beef Yorkshire pud gravy and stunning house made horseradish was put before me. My only small whinge and it is small and is a problem us poor English have to contend with in the colonies. The beer is waaaaay too cold. I understand the need to serve Australian beer cold (it has no taste) but this is high quality yummy English ale. Turn the cooling down a notch and all will be perfect. Anyway it won't stop me coming back every Sunday. Than you for being a northern git.
Had a fabulous night with friends trying many of the different dishes. The four cheese soufflé, spaghettini, prawns and salmon were flavoursome and nicely presented dishes we shared in our small group. We probably should've ordered 2 soufflés to share amongst 5, and despite being one of our favourite dishes, it could've been served with items that are able to be dipped into it (not just side salad). However that is minor. The eggplant and the gnocchi dish were both impressive but the real hero at the end was the chocolate fondant. Service was fantastic and very informative.

What a fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon. A 4 hour lunch with 4 gentlemen, eating our way through most of the menu... And ALL the desserts.
A funky venue with Banksy-esque graffiti on the walls, friendly staff who understood the menu, and a fabulous array of eatables.
Not pictured - so hungry and excited, we dove straight in!
Eggplant wedges with Cumin, smoked paprika, tomato relish. Great with a squeeze of fresh lemon.
Artichoke croquettes, olive, gorgonzola. A taste sensation!
Git's Meat plate - duck liver parfait, Red onion jam, Potted beef, cornichons, calabrase salami, balsamic shallots, tete fromage (head cheese), caperberries, rabbit rillette, house pickles
Salad of the day. Frekke, cucumber, fennel, pomegranate.
Hash tag fries. Spiced duck spring rolls with red cabbage slaw.
Special. Whole braised rabbit. Stunning - rich, juicy, tender. I've never had rabbit that was so good! Champ - mash with spring onions and chives.
Pepper steak pie. House made suet pastry, crushed peas, gravy. Hearty, honest, perfectly executed.
Pork schnitzel. Crispy, juicy and tasty.
House coleslaw, potato aioli.
Ginger and milk porter pudding with butterscotch, clotted cream
Apple & cinnamon cobbler with vanilla ice cream
Quince TrifleQuince, mascapone, lemon & almond
So delish! Loved them all. Great to taste the selection.
Creme brulee. Classic. Nicely done.
Brandy snap with vanilla and lemon goats curd ricotta. I've never been impressed by these before. But WOW! Tangy, creamy, zesty. Magnificent!
Every flavour of ice cream! I loved the ones with a yoghurt base. But each flavour was perfectly ballanced. Yummo!

Had an enjoyable Sunday roast here a few weeks back.
Rare roast beef with all the trimmings and a pint of the good stuff on a cold Winters Melbourne afternoon was just the thing. Reminded me of being back in the motherland. Bless! God shave the Queen!
Friendly, welcoming staff were the icing.
I'll be back to try a Hot Toddy amongst the other items listed on the menu(some of the dishes delivered to surrounding tables looked damn tasty).
A solid effort for a first visit.
Good stuff.
I'll be back.
Great place to dine with great food, attentive service and a fabulous ambience. We've not been disappointed by any of the items we've tried on the menu- the pie, steak, mussels and amazing red wine from the barrel. Not to forget my personal favourite is the creme brulee- to die for. Will certainly return!
Went there yesterday in my own . Service was great ! And the food was yummy .
I had the duck pate and then the hot smoked salmon , this was to die for . For main I had a filet Mignon cooked to perfection and dessert a quince trifle.
Will be back soon
Welcoming establishment with a great fit-out. Food was sensational. Some of the highlights were the eggplant wedges, the Git's meat plate was delicious and savoury, the sautéed gnocchi and house smoked salmon were sensational. The plate sized crème brulee was silky smooth with a good hard crack on it! Overall, the food was not a let down in any way - in fact it was all close to perfect. The restaurant were happy to let us chat the night away and be the last customers to leave on a Sunday night. My only, small issue was the lack of attentiveness (we had empty glasses and no one to ask for a refill for much of the evening). It won't stop me from coming back though...
Yum!. Great place! Had delicious quail and a fig dish which were the highlights. Great wine list too. So yum!
Not our usual Monday night dinner. We had a fantastic dinner at Northern Git this week, lots of starters/share plates including the meat plate with delicious house made parfait/pate-type things, eggplant wedges and yummy artichoke croquettes. The ricotta and pumpkin gnocchi was light & tasty. My husband loved the lamb (I think) pie and 10 year old was happy with the kids size flathead with hashtag fries (I think he loved the name). Friendly service and a quiet hum on Monday night, beats cooking!!
Perfect!. Great little no nonsense owner-run and managed establishment in the heart of Thornbury. We had dinner last night and the food was top notch (charcuterie plate was better than any iv had recently and very reasonably priced. In-house aged steaks were equal to the best in Melbourne and an amazing selection of beers on tap included hand pulled ale and some interesting stouts. Service was super friendly and attentive without being overwhelming or intimidating. Not sure why some people have given this gem a bad response... Great interior, nice and cozy with good British music at a perfect volume. Also do a traditional Yorkshire roast for lunch on Sunday, will have to come back and check it out.
Have been to Git a few times now and always leave with a massive smile on my face and my pants undone a few buttons.
Highlights ofcourse are the steaks, priced per 100g and cooked to perfection. Crispy charred goodness, melts in your mouth.
Very affordable wine list. The gentlemen that serviced us was so friendly and knowledgeable.
Aside from the steaks the other mains are also delicious. Table favourite was the pie so decadent and comforting.
Do not forget a serve of the ducko rolls! A must have!
Absolutely gorgeous food. The staff were super friendly. Gets a bit busy but it's understandable why. Their ribeye comes in either 550g or 600g and is simply fantastic. One of the best in Victoria for sure.
Great food, atmosphere and friendly staff. Had the Sunday Roast and the lamb was very yummy, all the sides and sauces go well together. Yorkshire pudding was big and pretty good, but I'd prefer it thicker. Overall a very satisfying meal and experience. Easy to find parking for Sunday lunch too.
This was an amazing discovery!
The food is delicious totally recommend trying their 80b days in-house agreed steak and the gin and wine list is impressive 👌🏻
We had the trout, spicy wings and the rib eye... worth the money and the service was fantastic! Despite being under staff and under the pump these guys did an amazing job!!
Will definitely visit again😘
A lovely gem that we were lucky enough to visit on our last night in Melbourne. We had wonderfully flavourful food that the waitstaff expertly recommended, good local brews and best of all, warm and genuine service that wasn't just professional but personal. This was especially felt after we were given the brush-off from the last restaurant and therefore didn't have a prior reservation. So even at the last minute, our rather large party of 6 (with dad using a walking aid) were warmly accommodated, making our last night a memorable one. Thanks Northern Git!
Nice atmosphere here. Good tap and wine lists. Tasty entrees. Friendly service too.
The bone-in rib-eye steak we shared as a main was large and looked great, but the cook was poor - crisp and blackened on the edges, but blue in the centre. We'd asked for medium rare. The well cooked parts were tasty.
We'll probably be back, but the steak - which we assumed was their speciality - was disappointing.
Absolutely LOVE Northern Git! This year and last year and the year before I've had my birthday dinner there, and have absolutely loved these celebrations. Everything about Northern Git is perfect!!! Corrine is always delightful, welcoming and fun, the food and drinks are delectable, and the ambience sparkles!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Just sensational. Food is well prepared, made in house, and just delightful. The gnocchi is quite possibly the best I have ever eaten, just perfect. The duck rillette I could have just eaten all night. It was a genuine pleasure to eat here!
