Review Le Cafe Flo - Thornbury

Nichakorn Pongsakornsathien
My favorite place to enjoy a galette. Their galettes were always heartly cooked and they offer a wide range of toppings to choose. Any hot and cold drinks with Chantilly cream were the best; a must to order. Prices match the food quality.

Decent food. (Sweet) crepes are very nice 😍 Service has room to improve for hospitality, and not ignoring customers sitting at corners

Fantastic food as always, friendly service and a lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth sitting down if you have the time!

I love the coffee here. It's smooth and strong. Unfortunately there are almost zero vegan options when it comes to food. But if you just want coffee you won't be disappointed.

We experienced poor service today, we had to wait 20 minutes for one takeaway toasted Croissant. After being told it would only be a few minutes. When we got it, it came out really over cooked and soggy. The filling was nice though.

Visited this well established Thornbury Cafe for Sunday brunch. It was particularly busy and buzzy (as it often can be) however owner Flo and the team always work hard to find room and seat their customers quickly. Two different sweet crepes were ordered one with chestnut cream ($8.50) and the other with poached pear and syrup and dark chocolate sauce ($10), all crepes are served with cream Chantilly. Both crepes were in a word Delish. The cafe itself is like a little part of France in a little part of Thornbury with it's walls decorated with various French posters and advertisements. First time here and the owner was really rude to me when asked for recommendations, and because I took some time I was told abruptly he’s got other tables to wait insisting I hurry up and order, so it wasn’t a very pleasant first impression. Other than that the food was good. Hesitate to come back but heard there’ll be new management (thankfully) soon so I hope to not to be treated like that again if I do come back.

Recently came here for a late breakfast. I felt they had good food and great staff. We had a good time.

Seriously THE best place in the Northern suburbs for a genuine Français feed. Always fresh, delightful, delicious food with a great atmosphere and the friendliest of staff. We love it here!

Very quaint french cafe in Thornbury. The croque madam was delicious. The staff are friendly and attentive and the coffee is good. A new favourite.

Have always felt immediately welcome, especially with kids in tow. Soups are always packed full of delicious and lemon tart is simply incredible.

Have heard good things about Le Cafe Flo, glad I popped in for a croissant and coffee. Paris France is one of our favourite cities which we have visited many times, Le Cafe Flo brought back us back to France. The ambiance of this cafe with its French music playing in the background, fresh baguettes on the counter is just perfect. Couldn't stop myself, I also ordered brunch and purchased a baguette when paying the bill. Loved my total experience and wil be back for sure. Thornbury is my old childhood suburb and sitting at this cafe only doors from where I once lived brought back beutiful memories. Only wish I was still living in Thornbury so that I could pop into this cafe daily. Oh, the staff a wonderful too!

Amazing little cafe with divine coffee, authentic French pastries and toasted baguette with house-made preserves and French butter. Interesting, very tempting breakfast/brunch/lunch menu. Wonderful customer service, a most perfect start to the day. I can't wait to go back.

Totally recommending, friendly staff that looks after you! Good experience with an extra refill on my green tea pot! Try their honeydew tea!

Unique little place which I travel over 45 minutes to get to and worth every minute. The stunning food is prepared passionately and the quaint decor just enhances the experience. I’d visit every week if I lived a little closer. Beautiful.

Favourite cafe in Melbourne. My week is not complete without popping in for a chai & crossiant. Food is always excellent & the staff are lovely. Merci x
Tamara Wensing
I can't get enough of Flo's! Every week we enjoy the best coffee along with delicious food and the best service in Melbourne. A cafe that feels like home but in Paris. A real Parisian experience. Best customer service. 5 star. Will be back again tomorrow!
Christian Tsalagradas
Very good food and service but lousy coffee. Prices are not too bad, especially for a French specialite. Overall a great place to go and enjoy a breakfast on a Saturday morning. Florian, change the coffee please! Cheers, Kristian

Delicious mid week escape. Fabulous service and ambience. And the food... :) So great to enjoy such delicious home made French specialties. Perfection... Great value for 2 courses coffee and wine. I will definitely be back again

Quince And Cheese
This humble spot is one of my favourite cafes on High Street. The staff are always lovely and the food is delicious. From the quiche to the baguettes to the crepes, there are tons of veggie options that are all winners. The coffee isn’t the best but everything else makes up for it (AND each one comes with a little crispy rice treat).
Shae Brennan
A little hit and miss unfortunately. Sometimes the coffee is good and sometimes you end up with the wrong order. Again, sometimes the food is fresh and amazing and sometimes it's a bit old by the end of the week.
The sweets are always amazing and the staff are friendly. Definitely recommend going but would be aware of the flaws much like any other cafe.
Dirk Morel
A fabulously quaint little French cafe. They were so busy, but joined a couple of tables together to accommodate us. Wonderful service, fantastic atmosphere, and great food. Would have given it a 5 rating if not for the loudmouth neighbour determined to let the whole cafe in on his personal life, and drowning out all attempts at conversation.
Bruce Melendy
A relaxing, unpretentious and cosy place with outstanding baguettes, crepes and pastries, and excellent coffee. The staff have been warm and friendly on all my visits, and the service has always been prompt.

4.2. This is a very good place. It’s a charming little French inspired cafe on High Street with nice indoor and outdoor spaces. It has a quirky French inspired interior with interesting plates photos and other accoutrements adorning the walls. I also loved that the menus are presented inside French artists’ record album covers. It’s kitsch but it works.

My opening long black was lovely. I’ve rarely ever had a good coffee in France but thankfully this cafe hasn’t followed that lead. The brew was mighty tidy. I went with one of those build your own brekkies for my meal. Two poached eggs on toast with mushrooms, emmental cheese, baby spinach and smoked salmon. I chose wisely. The dish was all quality and really tasty. The cheese was amazing, the mushies excellent, the spinach was sautĂ©ed superbly and the salmon was absolutely drop dead gorgeous. The service size was also bang on perfect too. My partner had a crepe that she pronounced excellent. Our friend had quiche with salmon, goat’s cheese and spinach. I tried a bit. The quiche was a cracker. It was really tasty with flavour all there and the crust was light, tasty and not too heavy. A winning dish.

Service was friendly and charming throughout. The French music playing added to the general bonhomie.

Our friend lives in an apartment just near this place. She loves it and says the French owner is very nice. He wasn’t there today but his lovely and capable staff made up for his absence.

This is a really good place. No wonder it is popular. Highly recommended.
Split The Bill
Came here to celebrate my friends 40th birthday. It was also one of the crazy 40 deg days so I enjoyed my banana and nutella crepe along with ny refreshing ice coffee. Service was friendly, quick and efficient too.
Magpie
A bit rustic and a bit old school decor but nevertheless a warm friendly cafe hiding a heap of goodness.
The menu does not offer much in the way of range but it doesn't need to.
Not very fancy presentation on the plates either but the quality is extraordinarily good.
A daily specials board tempts with some classic dishes as well as a display cabinet of quiches and tarts.
The baguettes are damn good and you can also have a beer, wine, aparatif or digestif.
Moussalisara
Terrible experience, unfortunately.

We were there on a trip to Melbourne from Adelaide and were recommended this place by our AirBnb host and were looking forward to the experience to remind us of the French breakfasts we have when visiting family back in Morocco and France. Unfortunately, we were heavily disappointed.

Though the staff members seemed lovely, the manager treated my husband and I very unprofessionally because we brought in a small portable cup of coffee from home. We ordered two breakfast meals and a coffee for myself and yet the manager proceeded to throw indirect comments at me regarding the coffee we brought in when I approached the counter to pay him. On top of this, while we were sitting down waiting for our orders, my husband moved his chair slightly to the side of the table so he was not blocking the walkway to the counter. Because of this, the manager glared at us and instructed one of his staff members to rearrange the tables next to us because we had to move over one of the tables slightly. This was done in a very rude manner, though it’s hard to explain. I hate to say this, but I feel as though we were discriminated against because of our ethnicity and the manager will know exactly what I mean!

You get the real Parisian cafe experience at this little cafe with the added bonus of Melbourne coffee. The service even comes with that gruff French attitude - but the food is excellent.
Ramen_Girl
Been here twice. Great coffee accompanied by a fantastic lunch which was beautifully presented. The tart both times was pretty epic. Lovely atmosphere, superb decor and a great host. I can see that they have a lot of regulars as he seems to know everybody. The menus = completely adorable. Somewhere to have a nice catch up with friends. Probably wouldn't take people there with mobility issues as it's quite a small place to get around and didn't see accessible toilets. Quickly became my no# 1 cafe of Thornbury!!
Alec & Mara
This was our third time back at Le CafĂ© Flo and it won’t be our last! Cafe Flo is a lovely local cafe, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. The menu offers a large range of breakfast and lunch items including eggs, salads, baguettes and sweet and savoury crepes. Everything is reasonably priced, especially for Thornbury and sitting right on High St. We love the coffee, always hot and served with a little tasty treat and the food is exceptional. Our first visit we tried the croque madam (the veggie option was a big +) which was so rich and decadent whilst still being very affordable. On our second and third visits we each had the crepes which were so good we ordered several to share (the caramelised apple, Nutella and banana and butter and sugar were amazing.) We’ve left happy each time and are already looking forward to our next trip! See you soon, CafĂ© Flo đŸ˜˜đŸ‡łđŸ‡±â˜•ïž

I love this place!!! I have tried both the hot chocolate and coffee, and it is brilliant. Having a croissant with butter and jam in there really does remind me of being in Paris! I usually order the scrambled eggs with the smoked salmon, mushrooms and potato. I love how it comes all mixed up and scrambled together, exactly how I like it!! This café is just adorable and so different to the other cafes nearby. Highly recommend it!

This place really does look and feel like a little slice of France-without the whole allowing small dogs inside and smoking indoors thing that you get in France. Anyhoo I digress..food is really nice and the deserts are divine! Coffee is unfortunately below average. Other cafes up the road with better coffee options if that’s what your after.
Braincloud11
I’ve been here to eat a few times and I can’t flaw the food or service. I’ve ordered many different food items and have never been disappointed. I have to make a special mention of the croque madam as it is the best I’ve ever had. So rich and full of Flavour and the egg was perfectly cooked. It really was delicious. One of my favorite places to have brunch. Well done.
Christine
The best place for homesick French people and for people who believe French are snobs and arrogant! Florian is such a great personality and friendly person and so is his team. Quality, simple and very French dishes, and you will not resist the almond croissants and the tarts. A great place for everyone.
Em
It's really nice to go to a French cafe in the suburbs that isn't pretentious. The decor here is fairly mish-mash with scratched tables, comics and a casual atmosphere. The menu is offers variety but I generally go for the savoury crepes or the dish of the day. Kudos to the staff for being considerate of the quirky old guy from the street who likes to come in regularly and sit at your table for a chat.
Margaret
Lovely small french cafe. Love the ambience, relaxing and chilled. Love their coffee and french patisserie. Good for people who prefer a light meal
Rogeritsbathtime
I think what I like most about this place is the strong coffee. The kind of cup of latte you instantly feel better after drinking.

I have been here a number of times in the past few months. It's one of the few places in the area that you likely won't have to line up for. Probably due to not being labelled as another hipster Thornbury cafe.

Their food is honest. Staff are really friendly and accomodating.
Diana
Cute, cosy place. The crepes are yum (salted caramel!) and French toast is delish. The decor adds to the whole experience and gives you something to admire while you eat.
Silver Bee
The buckwheat crepes are amazing. My favourite is the banana / caramel one. I love the decor and the staff and owner are lovely. I also really like the rice crisp GF treat. I always get one take away and try not to eat it all at once.
H
Rude, arrogant service - no apologies for food, a duck parmentier, that was sent back for being extremely oversalted. We left without eating, and they were reluctant to make take the uneaten dish off the bill. Will not be back.
Sarah Fernandez
Truly a unique place. Food is great and the coffee.. oh my!!! Service is a little slow but it's a little piece of France in the heart of thornbury. Love it 😍
R
Really nice place with great service. Excellent coffee. Warm goat cheese salad was oddly dressed and came with tiny bits of cheese (fantastic cheese though). I'll be giving this place a second chance though. Next time I'll try the gallettes, they looked great.
Terry Huddy
My fav place in Thornbury. The quiches are amazing and the galettes are great for a light lunch. It has an extensive menu, and every thing I've tried has been great. Staff are friendly and make you feel at home.
Stephanie
‱really vast menu, however from my glance it looked like it may not be the easiest to find something vegan here, but many vegetarian options!
‱absolutely loved the cute retro vibe and the unique touches
‱authentic French place - totally felt like I was in France
‱savoury crepe with goats curd, fig jam and walnuts served with salad was delicious and I would have it again!
‱yummy real chai latte - hot drinks are served with a little sweet that was super tasty and buttery
Sarah Jane
This place is my absolute favourite cafe. All the collectables and other bits and pieces from France displayed all over the walls gives this place an exceptional charm. The coffee is amazing, and the food is delicious, and the staff are always warm and friendly. :)
Caroline V
Food and coffee was absolutely delicious. We finished our brunch off with a almond croissant which was one of the best I had. Lovely, friendly staff and nice quaint place to sit and spend your morning. Well done.

Popped in for a late lunch on a day off .Warmly greeted by the french owner. Ordered the charcuterie plate and a glass of pinot.French tunes playing in the background , I almost felt I was in France. My only quibble was the pate was a little grainy.
Still a pretty good local cafe.

I was very excited to come here as I was introduced to Gallette on my first visit to Brittany, France by my Francophile sister in 2013. We had decided to have Sunday brunch here a week ago and anticipated that it may be busy, it was but I managed to snag a table for 2. The service was very prompt and we ordered our gallettes and waited.... and waited. After a couple had sat next to us and ordered, ate and left, I asked the waiter what was taking so long. I have no idea what he actually said as it was pretty loud inside, but not much by way of apology, only that the food was on its way. We waited a few more minutes and were really starting to get agitated- he came over and offered free coffee- we accepted, but were not placated. Our food finally arrived and was delicious. It's a shame it took so long. We were going to order a sweet crepe to share but our mood was ruined. It's obvious that a lot of patrons are regulars and are treated as such, unfortunately if you don't fall into that category, you miss out. Considering that there are so many cafes popping up on High St you would think they would try harder. I won't be rushing back any time soon. Very disappointed :(
Miranda Louise
Love this place! Beautiful and authentic french comfort food, lovely cosy atmosphere and really friendly staff with excellent service. Delicious!
The Don
One of my favorite cafes in Melbourne. Even if you're not after breakfast. Try and come here for a cofffee and a croissant. It's absolutely amazing.
Eating Around The Town
Lovely little place, a taste of France in Thornbury. I really enjoyed sitting here and enjoying my yummy crepe. The decor and food were just beautiful, I felt relaxed and not rushed at all. My partner got the farmer's lunch and it looked and tasted delicious. Charming, friendly owner too that really made you feel welcome. I have a feeling this will become a regular spot for us.

*After writing about here yesterday, I had it in my head to go this morning :) We picked up 2 coffees, a plain croissant and an almond one. Beautiful. The plain one was so buttery and flaky! Lovely coffee. Great start to the morning :)
Crispymelbreview
France, or more importantly, the rustic charm of northeast Brittany in Melbourne (the charming owner).
I have been a local for years, and love the Gallic atmosphere with its variety of Godard film posters, Piaf music etc.
The croissants and baguettes are brilliant and typically French.
The menu is provincial comfort food that transports you to rural France.
The coffee is wonderful and very Continental.
The owner adds to the French ambience.
Mad For Food
Be quick to snatch up the flaky and buttery croissants. Coffee is average but hits the spot. I feel like I'm in France with quaint decor and music.
Hungry-Caterpillar
Delicious French food! Lovely surroundings. Personal favourites are the homemade crepes (salmon) and tarts. Cafe Au Lait is to die for. Would recommend for a unique experience different to other local spots in the area. Enjoy! C'est Bon!

I'm French and I strongly recommend their croissants and pains au chocolat. Great service and each staff make you feel very welcome. Try it !
Bianca Armendy
Sweet little cafe with a lovely neighbourhood feel. It is always packed to the rafters come Saturday and Sunday. Serves the best coffee on the block - brewed to perfection every single time. Highly recommended.
Jess Carey
The perfect baguettes – soft and fluffy inside with nice crunchy crusts. This was the ultimate ham and cheese sandwich – husband’s was nice, but the creamy cheese in mine was magic. This is what happens when you use good quality ingredients and put them together in a simple manner.
Momoko
Polite, friendly service and the ambience is really quaint and relaxing. The food on the other hand left a bit to be desired. I would return despite my experience, but I'd probably come here for pastries and cake, rather than a proper meal.

The fried egg on top of my galette was overcooked, and even tasted slightly burnt. The galette itself wasn't very tender, and the filling was very salty. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing, but at a french cafe I expected the galettes and crepes to be really good.

My partner enjoyed his banana and nutella crepe however, and the madeleine I had on the way out was still slightly warm from the oven and absolutely lovely! However for brunch or lunch, there are a plethora of choices in the area so I don't think I will return very soon.

I like what I'm seeing so far, must come back for dinner.

Morning tea time, quaint, good vibes, pleasant ambiance, lots of French memorabilias; The Adventure of Tin Tin,etc.

Lots of Pastries on the shelf, plenty of Coffee.

Plat du Jour looks inviting, although it may look simple.

C'est Bon!
Anna Paddick
Delicious food and coffee, and the people are warm and friendly. The crĂȘpes are gluten free! All the Yum and no compromise or paying extra for gluten free bread. I'll be back sooner than I care to admit!
Bronimal
If I wanted the most substandard of substandard coffee I'd go back to Paris. As an aside, if the insurmountably rude proprietor doesn't want people sitting on his "beautiful herb garden" he'd be wise to relocate said patch of vegetation to somewhere that wasn't out the front of the thoroughly enjoyable Balkan bar next door.
Red Rabbit
I visited this cafĂ© on a recommendation and really enjoyed it, although for a couple of drinks and a cake it was more expensive than I had anticipated. Nevertheless, the surrounding tables' meals looked good as they arrived, especially the crĂȘpes.

The staff were pleasant and I got the feeling that most customers were regulars.
David Gentle
What a wonderful night we had. And so so French. It was July 14th so naturally the restaurant was completely full and the ambience was a real buzz. The French singer guitarist (M. Remi) played and sang in French, and the crowd sang along, played spoons, clapped, waitresses were dancing. La Marseillaise brought the house down. Vive La France!! It was such fun. Highly recommended.
And for desert, get the pear thing. It was exquisite.
Livilivilivil
Delicious croissant - bought a jar of their persimmon and vanilla jam cause it's just so good. Will def be back to try off the menu... A new local for sure

The sign outside said 'noisette bread'. As noisette is French for hazelnut I was immediately interested, having eaten delicious hazelnut bread in Normandy, France. As this is a French café I thought that they were selling something similar. I asked for noisette bread, and asked how big the loaves were and how much they cost. At $6.50 I thought that was a pretty good price. I asked for noisette bread and was told yes it's noisette bread.
I was pretty happy until I went outside and pulled a bit of bread apart. It was just ordinary sourdough bread.
I went back to discuss this back in the caféŽ But the only response was that 'noisette' is the name of the provider, not a description of the bread. I was very unhappy with the response and felt that the description is very misleading. The comment that 'you can't mix French and English terms,' was particularly insulting as this is a cafe that promotes it's frenchness all over the cafe. There was no apology from the owner, just some remark about next time. .. There won't be a next time for me with this attitude. Very disappointing.

Visited Le cafe Flo for dinner on Saturday. Good, honest food. Lovely service, accompanied with little snippets of French conversation (a delight for all Francophiles). Looking forward to visiting again.

Take me to Paris. As i am having withdrawl symptoms from visiting Paris 12mths ago this little hidden treasure in the heart of Thornbury is just what i needed. Given nothing can replace just being in Paris this comes pretty close. As i walked in it was like i had steped into Paris. The staff were very friendly. There was only 2 staff on at the time so the service was a little slow. But my sister and I didnt care as we were awear that there was minimal staff on at the time. When our food came to the table it looked amazing (i ordered Crepe tartin flombe and my sister ordered the Gallete with eggs and ham) it was well worth the little wait as it tasted even better than it looked. My sister and i have vowed to come back and try more stuff off the menu. This place is my new weakness . We found that we got full without the richness or bloated feeling of over eating. It was just perfect :)

...you will be impressed with the authentic food, whether you are stopping in for breakfast (think croissants, omelettes and French toast) or lunch where the banquettes, pastries and crepes leave you with a extremely difficult decision.

What amazing French onion soup! Very authentic. The owner is very polite too.

Not up to the French standard. We drove to Bro Alec but parked the car in front of this little cafe which looked cozy. We changed our mind and gave it a try. It was a very disappointing weekend breakfast!
There were only three tables when we first arrived. No attention given so we took the menus ourselves. Menus look great. My husband and I ordered some crepes, pain au chocolat, French toast, and hot drinks.
After 20minutes, we still didnt have our drinks. We reminded the staff. Another ten minutes passed. Another staff came to greet next door table to us and lifted the foot to the chair to show his new shoes! They probbly knew the customers well but i didn't appreciate the posture when i was sitting next to them. Then the food came out first (still no drink). It was the most oily crepe I have ever had as too much butter. It tasted ordinary. My husband is French and certainly can cook better at home. My French toast looked as if it was for kid. So tiny portion and looked so plain. We finally got our hot drinks. Drank quickly and couldn't wait to leave! Bad decision to give it a try and never again.

Angry on a Saturday. I came here last Saturday for brunch with three others and my 2 year old. I've never been here before as normally go to Bro Alec or Short Round. But we thought we'd give it a try.
We waited for what felt like forever to get any attention. We got up and got our own menus. Then called the waitress over to take our order. We then waited for 30 minutes for our food. My daughter, my friend and I received our scrambled eggs and bacon on toast. The waitress then promised the Eggs Benedict was coming soon. No mention of the Croque Monsieur we were still waiting for. I asked whether this was on its way too (I'd finished my eggs and bacon by this time which were overcooked and pretty underwhelming) the waitress said she'd forgotten to write it down and used the excuse that they were really busy which they weren't particularly and most people were eating pastries so no cooking involved there. The couple next to us cancelled their croissant as they couldn't be arsed waiting anymore.
Sorry this is a long story but it was SO FRUSTRATING!!!! And seriously no one gave a sh!t.
I wanted to like this place but I won't be giving it a second chance as there was nothing positive about the experience. If the food is good but service is substandard I will always give a place another go. But not le cafe flo because it was le cafe merde
Lilylola
Coffee and croissant made my day!!!. When your a tired mamma in need of something to pick you up... Le Cafe Flo is the place to go!!!
Yummmmm!! The coffee is just delicious!! I have only just found this little gem, best soy cap I have had in Melbourne :)
Marcushaas
Grouse coffee. Great coffee , good service , nice people

Le cafe Flo is such a great addition to thornbury and it's quickly built up a loyal following amongst the locals. Omelettes are delicious and the croque Monsieur has to be one of the best hangover cures in Melbourne.

C'est magnifique!!

Patience !!. One o'clock on a Sunday afternoon. Cafe half full.
We were pleasantly greeted by a young woman who gestured us to a table. Nice music, clever touch to put the menu in record album covers, predictable but nice menu. We ordered. And waited.
The 35 minutes between order and service felt like an episode of Dr Who in which time stops for everyone but the protagonists. It felt like we might be waiting forever until there was the crash of breaking glass. The waitress had dropped a bottle of water onto the concrete floor. That seemed to spur them into some sort of wind-up-toy action. They sent the cook out to the shops to get . . . something.
Our food came. Onion soup first. It was grainy with animal fat. My partner was already annoyed but that made up his mind. He pushed his bowl of soup aside and helped me eat my (very nice) salad and (delicious but falling apart) roast mediterranean vegetable croissant.
Bad soup, but otherwise pleasant, though unsurprising. But was it worth the wait?
Give these kids some time to iron out their kinks and this may turn out to be a place worth returning to.
Bakerlove
Not sure what the fuss is about. Had the scrambled eggs with mushroom & capsicum - very underwhelming. Perhaps some of the other menu items are more inspiring. Not sure I'll try again.

Lovely menu and food. Well priced. A petit piece of France in Thornbury. The owner, Florian, really looks after his customers.

DĂ©licieux. Delightful service coupled with delicious coffee and food. If only it weren't so popular!

For the love of France. Wonderful atmosphere! Lots of fun, and above all fabulous food...you can not leave without trying one of Flo's crepes!!! I felt like I was back in France again. Thank you Flo

Don't bother. We visited this cafe today for the first time, and left within half an hour. We ordered eggs benedict with salmon instead of ham and wanted some bread other than sourdough. The owner came over and asked 'what bread do you want?'. We told him we just wanted something other than sourdough to which he replied he would use a baguette but would be charging us extra! Not sure why but ok we will go along with it. When we received our meal we saw probably the worst hollandaise we have ever seen (and just two teaspoons full). To cut a long story short the owner admitted the hollandaise was split and not acceptable however said 'it's ok i'll take it back'. This attitude in my opinion is not acceptable and will not go back again, plenty more 'fish in the sea'.
Freyja
Lovely atmosphere, friendly service and great coffee. Very French.

C'est bon! My mum brought us here for breakfast. Perfect coffee, beautiful food, great atmosphere. And Florian is a delightful host! Highly recommended (especially La Montagnarde galette!).

Love it!. A friend introduced me to Le Cafe Flo a couple of months ago. Food and atmosphere are fantastic, very French! And Flo who runs the place is so sweet. I've taken my kids here a couple of times and they love the nutella crepes. There's a lovely little library of kids books to keep them entertained. Great job Flo - thanks for bringing a little bit of France to Thornbury.
Lena
Yum. Beautiful croissant, friendly waitress, a problem with missing ingredients was dealt with poorly at first, but then was resolved very nicely and politely by the manager. Great to see this approach to customer satisfaction and service, made all the difference to my experience and means I will be back.

Excellent!. I recently discovered this little cafe, and to my delight it is the most authentic french experience i have had since i returned to Australia. My husbands family are french and i have spent much time in France, so to find a place like this is like treasure! The guy who runs it is great... bright, and attentive, offering the days specials and giving honest advice about the portions even if he misses out on a sale.
if you want real quiche.....then this is the place for you! made fresh daily too! the pastries are fantastic- especially the almond croissants.
the croque-monsieur is delicious and you can follow it up with a real french style cafe au lait (thats a big BOWL of coffee, for those who don't know). Don't expect aussie-french. this place gives you the closest thing to the original french taste. To go with the experience is french background tunes, traditional french ciders, french cheeses and a modest relaxed french ambience. I cannot more highly recommend this place to people!

Excellent concept but food is a let down. Scrambled eggs were over cooked and were all crumbled best thing we ate was the butter. The food is very low standed for the area. Love the record menue by the way.
Mocha
Very disappointing experience. Food was average. Abusive and rude owner. Won't go back.

Tres Bien!!. This place is just amazing, from the staff to the food and coffee - top notch.
and the Galettes are incr- edible!
so much better than the muchly touted Brother Alec next door, which is a bit meh.

so walk past and get to Bric-a-Brac.

merci!

Qu'elle disappointment. What a pity, we weren't expecting anything particularly special but we weren't expecting to be served with such disdain. There seems to be a general attitude towards customers at this place perhaps we should feel grateful to be there. Common courtesy and a refresher course in Hospitality 101 would be good for this small cafe trying to find its way in Thornbury Village. We should have listened to what others had told us but we wanted to find out first hand, that's the first and last visit for us.

Rude arrogant never again!. Rude, arrogant ,up themselves haven't got a clue about customer service, need to take a lesson from the friendly cafes around them. No place for rude and arrogant overpriced place like this in friendly Thornbury.

Great Breakfast!. Okay, just had breakfast at Bric a Brac this morning as we wanted some French fare - ordered the Croque Madame and also some crepes. Food is excellent, service was friendly and efficient and we will be back for more ... a truly unexpected find in the Northern suburbs. Highly recommended.

Happy customer. We have been here a couple of times and have always waled away satisfied. A bit on the pricey side but have never had a bad meal here and the staff have been friendly and relatively fast both times.

We waited for over one and a half hours for a meals which were simple brunch items. The service was absolutely the worst in every way. We will never return!

Another great meal!. We've been regulars since this place opened last year and never been disappointed. Food is always delicious, coffee is perfect. I love their specials (had the mediterranean baked eggs today, delish!). Staff always very friendly and efficient. These girls make the best breakfast in Thornbury! Merci!
Local
In a nutshell, over priced food. Terrible service by extremely rude wait staff. Made to wait 45 mins for a crepe and sandwich (we had to request a new sandwich after the one we ordered was sat there for 15 mins on the pass! response to that was very rude) We receives no explanation or apology until we demanded one when paying "we're busy". No discount was given off the bill and we felt forgotten and unwelcome. We will never we going back. Shame and the customer service skills need some serious work!!!
Fitzo
Fantastic galette!. Had a fantastic ham cheese and spinach galette. Will be back!

Back in Paris !. I have lived in France a few years before moving back to Melbourne recently and was so excited to discover this French cafe in my neighbourhood.
I didn't think I could find authentic and delicious French food here in Melbourne but I've found it!
I like the relaxed understated atmosphere and the fact that this place serves great food, coffee and wines!
Service is typically French, quietly reserved and very efficient. Merci !

Lacking atmosphere, quality and customer service. Coffee: 4/5
Food: 2/5
Service: 2/5
Ambience 1/5
Value:2/5
Total:22/25 (44%) *Pending Further Review

Plain and simple this place had absolutely no vibe, it was utterly depressing with somber music playing accompanied by poor unfriendly service. Even after i said thank you for the waitress taking my plate away she just looked at me in a condescending fashion and said nothing. Now to the food which was utterly disappointing also, with the highlight of my baguette and breakfast crepe being the bread used for the baguette which is saying something. Very dry and minimal ingredients for the baguette. The breakfast Crepe was overcooked and looked a mess. The coffee was the only good component . Overall with so many good brunch places either side of Bric a Brac you may want to head elsewhere on high street.

C'est merveilleux. This is a hidden gem in the heart of Melbourne's inner north, serving a range of creperies by day and authentic French slow-cooked cuisine at night. Their evening specials rotate regularly - its worth checking their Facebook page regularly and sampling different nights of the week, as their current selection is the perfect antidote to Melbourne's wintry nights. The atmosphere is relaxed, with music mainly sourced from the classic singers of the 60's and 70's (Francoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg etc). Wonderful place.

I love this petit cafe! From the vanilla-y cafe au lait, the buckwheat crepes and farmers pate breakfast in the day ...to the cute night time menu and aperitif...I visit most weeks! J'adore!

Awesome awesome awesome lunch here. I had the egg & ham galette and was so taken with the crispy texture of the galette that I came back four hours later for another one but sadly they were shut. Fantastic!

Great place!. I had dinner there tonight with a couple of friends and we all loved it. I would definitely recommend this place and will come back as we want to try everything on your menu as it was too hard to make a choice, everything sounds delicious!!! Merci et a bientot!!

Delicieux!. As a local resident I am spoiled by the number of very good cafes in the Thornbury/Northcote area. Bric-a-Brac maintains this high standard but also offers something unique by serving simple French cafe cuisine. Every cafe these days seems to offer the usual breakie fare of eggs done several different ways, big breakfasts and foccaccia lunches. This cafe offers Croques Monsieur/Madame and crepes both savoury and sweet just like you would find in one of the bohemian-style cafes in Paris. The coffee is excellent too. I visit this cafe twice a week generally as well as others in a very busy cafe neighbourhood. I always come away satisfied.

Authentic French cuisine and atmosphere with great service

A welcome addition. We have been coming to this cafe for a few months now and it always delivers the goods. Consistently good coffee and a nice relaxed atmosphere. On the food side, particular favourites include the Croque Monsieur and Parisian Omlette. I'd highly recommend a visit for those who want a break from the traditional bacon and eggs routine.

Good coffee (coffee supreme) in the right sized takeaway cup.

Top new management - WOO HOO!!. I have started to refrequent this charming little café ever since the wonderfully hospitable Florian has taken over the management. Along with several other deeply relieved returning customers, we could not be happier at this change in atmosphere, charm and lovely hospitality that this café now exudes. The coffees and galettes continue to be excellent, and Florian is wonderful about remembering the coffees exactly how one likes them. The service is so friendly, so welcoming that you feel really happy to be there! The music collection at Bricabrac has become really awesome, full of French jazz classics as many other customers have also commented. Really excited and pleased about this cute French café finally finding its place in friendly Thornbury - the change from the bitter sulky staff of the earlier management is to be seen to be believed. Head over and have one of the best coffees on the strip! :-)))

-----22 Jul, 2013-----

Disappointing customer service and response. Bricabrac - your reply is appalling on a number of fronts.

First - I used to come to your cafe 2-3 times a week, always at times when it was near empty or 2-3 tables occupied. Even so, I was always careful to occupy table for 1 - something you ironically insulted me about though I buy lunches, desserts and 3-4 coffees/tea every single time I came. Other cafes are highly appreciative of a customer reading or working when it is empty or near empty - which is often the case for you.

Two - I have almost never used your wifi as my computer automatically locks on to my own portable network - it is disgusting you make such nasty assumptions about your customers.

Three - I have tried to convince many of my academic friends to come for meetings at Bricabrac cos I was genuinely fond of your cafe initially. Each one of them refused after their very first go, and we meet again at cafes on either side of you. Your patronising attitude is their chief reason.

As a customer, I will give you a tip. Some of the more tolerant ones like myself will put up with poor attitude and service for a while for good coffee - but only for a while. Others are far less tolerant. I am a regular in many cafes and in 100% of them, they have become personal friends of myself and my husband. Thats what you have to compare with.

Four - you have selectively noted the 1-2 poor reviews I gave other cafes specifically for poor service. These were cafes that did well initially and then declined - one shot wonders. You might have also noted that my reviews were consistent with others. A worrying trend for "a very small business" like yourself to think about?? Another bad review for you came on the same day as mine.

Five - you are surrounded by excellent cafes and there is a new one coming around the corner. For "a very small business" like yourself, building a loyal customer base is the best chance of survival. If you want to do better than an initial success run, think about that instead of steadily offending us.

-----18 Jul, 2013-----

Nasty insulting waitress. Service has taken an absolute nose dive - blatantly rude and insulting waitress. Do they realize they have some of the friendliest nicest cafes on either side of them?? B-a-B's coffee and food is good; unfortunately so is their talent for nastiness in customer service. Their cook is the one smiley face around the place, unfortunately she is mostly in the kitchen so the one pleasant face is mostly hidden. I'll be taking my daily coffee$$ next door, hope you are thus rewarded by each of your regulars henceforth.

-----09 Apr, 2013-----

Pleasant experience. Had the lemongrass and ginger tea - all fresh - and the banana nutella which was ok but not complaining. Will be back, slated to become a local go-to, if the next visits go well.

Le bistro super bien. Very friendly and friendly staff and excellent atmosphere! Sit back, relax and enjoy delicious brunch-lunch menu items! Great French bistro of Thornbury Village!
Bella
Dissapointed. As a francophile and crepe connoisseur, I was looking forward to trying this local creperie, but I must be invisible; the waitress served two other parties that arrived after me whilst I quietly waited. After she failed to even see me at all after being there for at least ten or fifteen minutes and went to make coffees for some lucky people who were allowed to order, I left and walked to Brother Alec where they took my order within a minute of my sitting down. I'm afraid that the service at Bric a Brac was extremely frustrating, so I won't be heading back anytime soon. They should consider employing another server.

Great Place. Have been there a handful of times.
Perfectly authentic French food, very nice Coffee Supreme flat white. The galettes are definitely my favourite.
So good to have a French place in the neighbourhood!!

Great food. I am a visitor to Melbourne and went to this cafe and had a delicious gallette with French blue cheese. It was fabulous so we returned the next day and I had a croque Monsieur which was better than what I have had in Paris.
We will be back whenever in Melbourne.
