Review Jerry Joy Cafe - Thornbury

Liv Fleming
The verde sauce on the wild mushroom hash was even better than I remembered it today! Such a delicious breakfast dish đŸ€€ coffee was superb...super satisfied, thanks Jerry Joy team!
Riley Canning
Jerry Joy is our favourite cafe’! Consistently great coffee and customer service. Particularly Tress & Jack (but the rest are amazing too). Delicious food & it’s always a treat to have a laugh and smile with the staff. Comfy and always good vibes!
Sonia
Waffles and coffee absolutely delicious 👌 Customer service, hands down friendly, quick and just an awesome bunch of people thank you so much for an amazing brunch ❀

We were lucky enough to get a table outside, with plenty of shade from big umbrellas. There was room for two prams and 4 people. The staff were very attentive and friendly. The food was excellent I tried the breakfast burrito and the katsu chicken bowl - yum! My friend had the green bowl and it looked incredible.
Christine Monty
The best experience of this cafe!!! Jack is such a sweetheart!! What a beautiful human, making my breakfast experience delicious!! I would come back again with my favourite people. Big love
Tara Rogers
The food was amazing!! And the staff were so lovely! Thank you so much
Cheri
Get the mushroom hash + add bacon. 10/10. Definitely coming back!
Alexis Smibert
Jack is so amazing! Always serves so well and is super professional! And Tressy as well! I am so grateful to have found a cafe where the staff actually care and always remember my order and never fail to show respect and love!

Wonderful, super friendly staff, great coffee and a growing selection of vegan options. This is our favourite cafe in Melbourne! The raw caramel slice is a must try and they have the best vegan aioli!

I have driven past this cafe for ages and finally went in yesterday for a quick breakfast. And let me say I was beyond impressed staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was amazing. I had a soy cap and the bubble and squeak fritters and firstly the coffee was smooth and delicious but the highlight was the food put in front of me. The fritters were extremely tasty, seasoned well, crispy on the outside and beautifully light on the inside, the Harissa and side salad were just as tasty and complimented the fritters perfectly. You'll be seeing me again!

Great vibe. quick service, kimchi bowl was scrumptious and such a nutritional brunch option. Hope to live in this neighborhood soon ;)

The food is delicious, and I highly recommend the Mush & Hash. Paired with great coffee and lovely service. Nice little courtyard setting down the side too. This little cafe offers it all.

Love this place! My fav local cafe, great coffee, great food, great service ïżœ One teeny tiny request, please please put the lemongrass hot choc on your menu? It was a special a few weeks back and totally amazing!
Martin Withers
Jerry Joy is a favourite cafe. The staff are very friendly and efficient. I have tried several options on the menu and always been satisfied. My favourite is undoubtedly the Mushroom Hash. Mmm mmm mmm. The mix or indoor and outdoor spaces is also charming and staff manage them well.

Nothing ever seems to come close to the Chai Latte or brunch at JJ. My Fav by far.

My local cafe, the food is consistently great, excellent coffee, friendly staff. Only gripe is whilst trying to enjoy Sunday brunch, the mum with the screaming baby behind me pushed her seat into mine and expected me to tuck my seat right into the table. So I did politely and was wedged into the table. They left and another family sat behind me and within a minute their babies were screaming, and the cafe is tiny, and was full and they didn't even go outside or try to calm their screaming kid down. It was totally stressful so I ate and had to get out. I also saw another kid knock water on another customer. I was eating there with a kid and I wouldn't inflict her tantrums on others. Anyhoo - great food/coffee, but be mindful there may be screaming babies and parents who don't give a shit about you

Really friendly staff, fast service and delicious food. Loved it. Looking forward to going back.

Great coffee great food and the best carrot cake in Melbourne
Petra Murphy
Had a great coffee here this afternoon, my son had the bacon and egg roll and loved it. The staff were excellent and gave me a donut when leaving. Will definitely go back again.

Great intimate cafe off the main drag. <br/>Really enjoyed brunch here today with some family and friends. Service was quick and friendly and we all thoroughly enjoyed the food. All meals were tasty with great size portions. Can’t wait to come back for some more!!

Fantastic cafe serving delicious food and coffee, can’t fault it! angus beef burger and homemade falafels look great. It is slightly on the smaller side so might be a bit congested on weekends but great for weekday coffee lunch or brekky! Staff are lovey also.
Olivia Jameson
Coffee is really good and people are nice. The menu is a little basic in terms of variety but what they do they well. The outdoor space is cute
Dimmy Georgiadis
Great little converted corner milk bar tucked away in the back streets of Thornbury. <br/>Nice menu and great staff. Outdoor seating options and gluten free items available. <br/><br/>Coffee is inconsistent though. I’ve had good and bad take away coffee from here

Do yourself a favour and come here when you have some time to chill. And when it’s sunny. Sit outside. It’s very pretty surroundings. We are working our way through the menu. Our faves are the 2 dishes pictured. Closely followed, for me, by the veggie burger - add the halloumi and cram it in the burger, for next level taste. The coffee is lovely. We always leave full and happy

Bottomless batch brew yew đŸ€™đŸ»<br/>Always good specialty coffee selections, always new and updated T/A and dine in menu options, always good vego/vegan/gf/etc menu options, always rockstar foh team, always good vibes all round, always coming back! ❀

The food is definitely spot on here! Menu is varied and interesting - sure to please all foodies. Cute little spot with some outdoor areas and lots of dogs. Can recommend the mushroom and hash with plenty of delicious flavours! Service was fine. A few mistakes but generally smooth and friendly. Lots of tasty baked goods to take away and good coffee.
Belle Noble
Best coffee in the north. Amazing service and such a good vibe. The food menu is delicious - try the not smashed avo! If you’re looking for a good local then this is the place.

Great first impression ...<br/><br/>Not a standout of the street, however they did a "lazarus" effort in bringing this old milk bar to life ... it seem to radiates that "cafe spirit" to the surrounding local community.<br/><br/>Latte was good, will come back for more, the Menu looks interesting too. What a little local treasure! A converted corner store with all its character complete. Lovely grapevine covered outdoor tables and if it wasn’t raining I would have been out there enjoying the tranquility. A lovely diverse menu, plenty of modern tantalising options but with many of the more traditional favourites. I had poached eggs and bacon on sourdough with espresso and it was perfect. Eggs perfectly poached, great ratio of bread to eggs, bacon tasty and bread lovely. Coffee was very good, and came on a trendy mini board with a shot of soda water. Staff member who served me was friendly, efficient and attentive. I love this place and wish I was staying longer in the area!! Great job Jerry Joy!!
Oj_always_eating
Jerry joy’s is an absolute local favourite of mine - very close to where I live, it’s a reliable little cafe that very rarely disappoints!!! The coffee is great, as is the Mork hot choc đŸ‘ŒđŸ» and they take 20c off if you bring a reusable cup, which I like a lot! The food is generally great - all tastes delicious but some servings tend to be on the smaller side, so don’t be frugal with the ordering if you’re hungry!! Service is sometimes great, sometimes average - depends who is in on the day. The little cakes in the fridge are DELISH - I often pick a few up and take them home for afternoon tea. Of all the times I’ve been, I’ve only experienced very few hiccups at Jerry Joy - I’d recommend it for your next weekend coffee, particularly if you live nearby! 😊

Had the amazing Mexican corn and zucchini fritters and a cold brew. Staff were super friendly and service was fast, also got to pat lots of sweet dogs at the front (bonus!). Definitely coming back.

Off the main drag of High Street, is this gem of a location. They've done a great job converting a true Aussie corner store into this cute little cafe. The side outdoor eating area provides enough shade and protection from the sun but still gives you that outdoorsy feel.<br/><br/>The pulled pork / eggs Benedict was yum, the eggs were cooked about right and the crunchy sourdough bread pulled it all together. And the gluten free waffles were proper waffles which is pretty hard to find! They were cooked perfectly and were super tasty!
Gf Queen
Keep in mind: menu on zomato is not up to date at the time of posting this, meals reviewed are not in the photos. Highly impressed with this gorgeous GF brunch (at 2pm mind you). Lots of free parking around the cafe, we ate outside while the sun was shining so we didn't see the interior decor. Outside seating was a bit wobbly I think they could update the seating or make the floor more stable. Otherwise a perfect, timely meal. The fitters with an egg were wonderful. Extremely tasty, well cooked. Looked a bit black but it worked. Wish they used regular feta instead of cashew feta, it really didn't have a taste nor resemble feta. I think it's a great idea for vegans but doesn't suit all tastes. The saltiness of real feta would have lifted the dish miles. My friend definitely enjoyed her dish a lot. We still both polished out plates and had a good meal.

Love this place!<br/><br/>Came in for a cold early morning brunch and they were packed! So good to see a little cafe busy even on a Tuesday morning! <br/><br/>Even though they were busy we got a table straight away, sat with some lovely friendly local customers who were also happy with the service. <br/><br/>Coffee was yummy and service was great. I didn't feel like it was rushed or messy, just attentive and relaxed. <br/><br/>Food was delicious. I had the mushroom dish- my favourite- and my babe had the waffles. Simple and satisfying. <br/><br/>Definitely recommend going off the main drag to sniff this hide away out. 🌾😘

Gosh this place is cute! Tucked away in the back streets of Thornbury, it's a little gem! Lovely fresh food, great coffee (though I need to ask for it to be strong!) but it's their cake selection that always has me drooling and wanting more! Pleasant staff and good service.

A short review here. <br/><br/>The waffles and the earl grey porridge are both so delicious. Please please give them a try. <br/><br/>Seriously. Give them a try.

Lovely place for a morning of work and people watching (in pj's and robe's)! <br/>Coffee and Tea have been delicious. Service has been great and I loved the hustle around me.
Shil Grao
We went for Saturday breakfast. The place was already packed by 10. There wasn't any waiting staff to direct customers, especially since we went there for the first time. The food itself was ok, nothing spectacular and is slightly over-priced for the portion sizes. I stood at the paying counter for almost 5 mins with staff on the other side and walking about without actually stopping to put the payment through.

Second visit for me to Jerry Joy but the first for my gorgeous one. The visit confirmed my earlier view and blew her away. This is a terrific little place that reminds you of all the reasons Melbourne is such a great place to eat. The cafe is nicely sited on a corner in the quiet back streets of Thornbury. It was beautifully warm inside on a cold late winter's day. We were affably greeted once inside. I started with a coffee which was superb. I had a New Standard for my meal after sneaking a look at my neighbour's meal. I have rarely made a wiser choice. It's a wonderful offering. Beautiful egg and bacon on Turkish bread with ailoi and rocket. I added some mushrooms which were superb but not strictly necessary as the meal is quite large. My loved one had avocado smash with gin cured trout. She ate it in stunned reverential silence and declared it the best dish of its type she'd ever eaten. <br/><br/>So there. It was a lovely brunch. They're doing everything right here. I congratulated one of our servers on the way out. My earlier score of 4.7 is enthusiastically affirmed.<br/><br/>------------------------------------------<br/>First review three months earlier<br/><br/>Hands up those who love Melbourne. If you're hand's not up, may a deep shame descend on you. Melbourne's food, coffee and wine scene is extraordinary, legendary even I'll suggest. And, places like this - the agreeably named Jerry Joy in the back streets of Thornbury - help make it so. <br/><br/>I received a lovely friendly greeting on arrival here, despite my non hipster vibe. No prejudice is a good start. They've made a nice space here out of what is no doubt an old milk bar in the back streets. It feels good with nice internal and external seating areas and has a friendly warm vibe. I began with a nicely made coffee. Rich and satisfying, it hit the spot nicely. I then continued my very lucky run of recent breakfast orders preferring by choosing the home made beans with poached egg and chorizo. What an unknowingly clever decision I'd made. This dish is stupendously good. Who'd have ever thought the words five star and back streets of Thornbury would ever be uttered together anywhere. It's hard for me to do the dish justice. Seriously, this dish is wonderfully good. Rich and full of flavour and texture with bursts of pure bliss from the chorizo. When the dish came to the table I was worried it was a tad undersized. But, at this early point I hadn't been able to appreciate the genius of the chef here who in fact had crafted the exact amount of food right down to the last bean and slice of chorizo. The size I was given was perfect. A mere half mouthful more risked gluttony or waste. I had requested one modification to the dish. Seeded bread in, sourdough out. I have been moved by that Harvard research a few years ago asserting that whole grain adds 10% to your life. I'll take the 10% and can report that the substituted bread went mighty well with this top class dish.<br/><br/>Service overall was lovely here. Three people served me off and on. Each was very pleasant, efficient and engaged. I left them in no doubt that they and their food were mightily appreciated on a cool and soggy Melbourne afternoon.<br/><br/>To sum up, this was another very happy Melbourne food experience. It's a 4.7 overall. Places like Jerry Joy are a sheer delight and are part of a great culinary scene of this city as suggested. Nice place, lovely staff, outstanding food and coffee, peaceful streets. It's all part of a nice life.

A friend took us there one day and I have to agree with her choice. What a wonderful breakfast we had. All dishes look and taste yummy. A bit on the pricey side, but it's worth it. Coffee is just passable, not great. All in all, it's a pretty good experience for me.

I've recently moved into the area. <br/>In the last couple of weeks I've been getting familiar with the cafes that thornbury & northcote have to offer.<br/>This morning I stumbled across this place ,<br/>nice little corner spot. I've noticed a few of these types of cafes around the traps. <br/><br/>Unfortunately this place from the moment I walked in was lacking any sort of vibe and ambience. No music, and a very dated decor.<br/><br/>The barista was in her own world, didn't make any effort to acknowledge customers. A baristas job isn't just to make consistent good coffee, interaction is key, especially in a small venue like this where that personal touch goes a long way to gaining regular clientele - NO personality at all. And for whatever reason I waited a good 10-15min for my coffee and she probably only made 3 or 4 before hand. <br/><br/>This cafe is behind a lot from what the rest in the area are providing across the whole board of coffee and cafe experience!<br/><br/><br/><br/>

Amazing local gem! Perfect coffee, best burgers, delicious sweets and super friendly staff. Always playing great background music too. This place is a must.

"JJ's" has morphed into a familiar abbreviation in my family's culinary lexicon. Why? Excellent coffee, an ever-evolving and consistently brilliant menu, lots of spots to enjoy the sunshine and charming staff. This morning, during what I would estimate to be my 40th visit, I tried their special Asian-style omelette. It was an absolute cracker, as it very often is. Not having sampled the entire menu (being something of a creature of habit) I am reluctant to suggest they can't go wrong but, the more often I go, the more often I feel that this is the case.

Met a friend here last Sunday. What a lovely little bright and bustling cafe in the residential streets of Thornbury.I had the mushroom hash which was so damn good I left nothing on the plate. My friend had the smashed avo with a super generous side of bacon which she said she enjoyed..couldn't eat all the bacon though.Coffee was spot on and staff were just the right amount of attentive.Given this place isn't far from home and almost exactly half way between my friend and I's places,it's sure to get many more visits from us!
Annannann
Great local cafe, funky Thornbury vibe, great service. Breakfast was tasty, fresh and quality ingredients used. We had the mushroom hash & the beef brisket special, both were interesting tasty dishes.
Sammi C
Cosy cafe in the back streets of Thornbury. Coffee is good and service is always welcoming. I like the hash stack with added chorizo. Eggs benedict also simple but solid. Would definitely recommend if in the area.
Cedra
I got the mushrooms & hash and.... I would have licked the damn plate if thought I could get away with it! Coffee was nice, for sure, but the food...! Hubby had the Korean which he described as "very fresh - nice". Although we didn't have our toddler with us today, there were plenty of kids and a kids' menu. We will be back to try the rest of the menu soon.

Wow what's not to like about this little cafe in the back streets of Thornbury. <br/>I had the mushrooms and hash. Delicious. My partner had the pulled pork benedict. He didn't talk the whole time just ate. Coffee was good too.
For_the_1ove_of_coffee
Cute café with a fresh menu. I had the mushroom bruchetta and it was incredible. I then tried to reproduce it at home to impress my friends. Needless to say it didn't come close to yours. Thanks for the inspiration. I'll be coming back for the real thing soon :)

This is our favorite local cafe. The food is amazing, the coffee and milkshakes are perfect, the service is warm and very hospitable. It's a little gem, hidden in the backstreets of Thornbury.
Rogeritsbathtime
Amazing. Great coffee, food and service. One of my Thornbury faves. Been here a few times and never had anything that wasn't amazing. A bit busy weekends though if you don't like waiting.
Katherine Kay
Amazon cafe. Great food. Cute out of the way location. Well worth a visit. Almost don't want to rave about it so the masses don't go but it's fab and you should.

Visited with a friend over the weekend and we loved everything about it! Tucked away in the middle of a residential area, it was quiet and yet surrounded by locals. Rather tiny on the inside but we got a table straight away in a nice sunny spot just inside the window. I liked the decor of the hanging plants above our heads. We both got the waffles with quince paste/poached pears/cream cheese foam/pistachios and we LOVED it. We ate every single bit - it wasn't too sweet like some dessert breakfasts can be. I also had the hazelnut hot chocolate made with Mork dark chocolate which was on their specials list, it was so delicious and again not too sweet. The waiters were friendly and checked in with us to see how everything was, which was a nice touch. Will definitely be back to try the savoury breakfast items!

There are very few things in this world better than a backstreet cafe in Melbourne, and Jerry Joy's has got to be among the best. Hidden away deep inside the northern suburb of Thornbury, this little cafe executes their dishes better than most restaurants. Great service and consistently good coffee. I strongly recommend coming at the start of the week when the weekend specials are still going, but without the weekend crowds.
LC.
Tasty menu in a lovely spot, tucked away from the hustle and bustle. We went for Mother's Day breakfast and had an enjoyable meal, although the portion size to price ratio may have been a smidge off with everyone wanting for more afterwards. Service was great and quick considering it was packed to the brim. GREAT COFFEE, which is really a fabulous draw card! I don't know if I'd feel the need to make the trip back down again but definitely worth a stop if you are in the area or local.
Collin Li
I literally come here every weekend. Unlike some brunch spots where I only have one favourite, I can find multiple options that interest me every time. It's kind of like going on a first date with the same person every time 😂
Mae-Gene Yew
These guys make the best breakfast burgers - I'm lactose and gluten intolerant but they're very accommodating and friendly to any dietary requirements! At the moment they have a really yummy winter hot chocolate (cinnamon and spices!)
Yanto Kusuma
Had a lovely lunch and talk in a good atmosphere. I liked the adjustable chairs which are good for people of differing heights ergonomically speaking. The food was yummy and the service was great - there was a mix up with me getting gluten free but they changed it with no fuss at all!
Racheeeee
Coffee was really bad and COLD. My sister had to order her coffee extra hot after she got her breakfast because she knew it was going to come out cold and she didn't want to drink cold coffee with her breakfast. <br/><br/>Food wasn't that great, some flavour combinations just shouldn't happen. <br/>Also took ages to come out. <br/><br/>Typical hipster cafe. Never going again.
North By NorthEat
Ate at Jerry Joy this morning, the second time I've eaten there. Again the food was sensational, the coffee strong and the service friendly. The herb crepes (a special) were really fantastic, light and had yum filling (the pickled radish on the side was a plus) and we shared with the waffles - delish! Always buzzing the room is light, friendly and local - three things that get it close to five stars from me. Chorizo on the side of my egg & bacon roll was a generous serve. <br/><br/>I'll be coming back to this ace little local again soon
Catrina Huang
Will add this to my list of go-to places for good food, good coffee and good service. No waiting even though it was a busy Saturday lunchtime period - i.e. busy but not packed and you don't feel you have to rush because there is a queue of people who have come just because it is "the place to be seen eating". Food actually reflects what is written on the menu. Keep up the good work!
Natalie Cook
We had a delicious breakfast this morning. The staff were friendly, the venue was relaxing, the coffee was perfect & the food was delicious. We'll definitely come again.

Living so close to Jerry Joy is difficult. Whilst dating my now wife we resided close by Jerry Joy and found that it was difficult to cook ourselves breakfast given that something so amazing was happening right around the corner.<br/>Funnily enough, Beth and I only managed to eat there the once prior to moving to another place in Thornbury. I can still remember the Sago Pudding that Beth ordered. I don't believe it is on the menu now. It was utterly fantastic. <br/>I remember that the coffee was good there too. Not that I'm a coffee aficionado, but I ordered one there and liked it so much I ordered one to go.
TY
I'll start with the positives, i think the atmosphere and location of jerry joy is great.  It's bright and airy and in a quiet unexpected location.<br/><br/>The staff are friendly and sincerely so.<br/><br/>My sister enjoyed her "The scrambled" although it was tad spicy for us.  Presentation looked good, eggs were creamy.  Corn was disappointingly not charred though.<br/><br/>I ordered the noodle salad.  The ponzu dressing was so salty, and I'm one who is known for taking her food with more salt than others.  Because of the overwhelming taste of soy sauce, I couldn't tell if the daikon was pickled.  <br/><br/>The amount of vegetables given were so little.  Pretty sad in fact.<br/>I would recommend the chef to have a look at the vietnamese salad at footscray or richmond viet places.<br/><br/>Definitely not worth the 14 dollars price tag.<br/><br/>Edited : Just saw someone else's pic of the noodle salad, mine looked nothing like that!
Shanna
Superb little neighbourhood cafe - cute setting, great diverse menu (and sweets cabinet!) and the most wonderful staff. Can't fault a thing!
Monica Doan
The food and service here is always top notch! My friend recommended me this place and I've never turned back! This is my go-to breakfast/brunch destination. Menu is perfect and you get exactly what is described to you. Servings are great! Like I said, service is top notch! You are always welcomed and seat immediately (provided there are seats). A menu and water is brought to you seconds after you are seated. Your waiter asks if you want any coffee and then you're left to look at the menu! They had once forgotten to bring out my coffee but I let them know as I was paying and they gave it to me on the house in a takeaway cup! So sweet!
Michy
Came here for a Tuesday lunch break. Quick, friendly and efficient service. Ample seating inside and out. Plenty of street parking as well. I think it is very popular with the locals, as about 90% of the people that walked past, knew some other people who were sitting outside one way or another - gives a very homely feel. Loved watching all the dogs walk by as well. Had the avo smash, no bacon ($17), was delicious and filling even though I find the price a bit steep, but then again that's what cafes charge for poaches eggs, avo and bread these days. Will be back to try the smoothies. Thanks!
Phuong Phan
Found this place on zomato! Saw the photos and decided that this was the next place to go. It was a small cafe that looked previously like a milk bar. It was packed! <br/>Got the mushroom hash. Great presentation and tasted delicious! Bacon is a must on the side with it. Melted right should and the poach was perfect. I'd love to go back.. If it wasn't always so packed.
Anna_Thornson
Love this place! A bit on the pricier side, especially for the suburbs, but well worth it! Absolutely love the hash and mushrooms - presentation and flavour of the food is amazing. Definitely worth a visit!
Rebekah Smith
Ok coffee, ok food! Both not the greatest and expensive for only two for breakfast.<br/>Staff were friendly<br/>Had the smashed avo, it was nice but disproportionate .... One small egg to two large pieces of toast and huge mash of avo on the one piece while egg on the other piece of toast ( it may sounds odd to complain about but it does matter)
Anna Starr
I adore Jerry Joy cafe, the food is creative, healthy and well executed. The staff are efficient without any fuss. The environment is casual , there is indoor or outdoor seating. They also change their menu regularly which is such a good thing. They have some lovely sweets as well.
I. D.
Wanted to have a late lunch and found this spot on zomato. Unfortunately we arrived at 5 past 3 and the kitchen closed at 3. Luckily they had some toasted rolls/wraps that we could get. They were okay, price ($10) okay as well. Service was friendly.
Tangles
Food, coffee and service all fantastic but serving sizes are noticeably small. Possibly a good thing for people like me who frequently overindulge but there are definitely better value Cafes around.
Tina Foley
Eaten here a few time now and keep going back for the very yummy Egg and Bacon rolls!  Also highly recommend the Mushrooms and Hash. Great open light cafe and yummy treats and friendly staff.
Bridgetori
Fantastic lunch spot. Friendly, attentive staff. Coffee was great and we devoured our lunch, leaving clean plates. We had the vermicelli noodle salad with BBQ pork and the calamari salad. The table next to us brought their dogs and a waitress was quick to bring a container of water out for them. Looking forward to a return visit.
Jenn Varrasso
Yum! Yum! I've been to Jerry Joy 3 times now and have tried something new each time because they have such a yummy menu. The food is always beautifully presented and the taste is to match. The coffee is excellent. They look after allergies with the utmost concern. The staff is always friendly. Sometimes it can get a little busy and a wait is expected - however, for such a little kitchen it's completely understandable.
Mon's Adventure
I don’t go to brunch too often – but I decided to take my sister out to celebrate the end of exams, so here was my chance. I went back to my long-forgotten list of places to go and noticed Jerry Joy. My older sister told me to try it last year as her friend owns the place, a friend who used to own The Foodrinkery. Thornbury might sound like it already has a few cafes, but have you heard of a cafe NOT located on the ever-populated High St?
AH
LOVE!!!! Jerry Joy is an absolutely delightful spot! The staff are so friendly and accommodating and you don't even have to ask for honey with your chai, as you do at most Melbourne cafes! On top of that, the beetroot fritters are absolutely stunning, both visually and in taste! Definitely one of the best brunches I've had recently in Melbourne and I could not recommend it enough!
Kahl P
Lovely saturday morning breakfast - speedy and delicious. <br/>Only thing I could mention is the bread was a little well toasted for 'The Standard'<br/>And the brownie was outrageously good, but I always like to have a little crunch in mine. Maybe I should have eaten it with my sandwich!
ThePrestonProwler
<br/>+++ service<br/>++ coffee<br/>++ food<br/>Nice little spot in thornbury. Enjoyed the trout with potato rosti.<br/>Baking cabinet looks awesome.<br/><br/>~hold the pansies as garnish. <br/>

Cute wee cafe in the middle of Thornbury. Really wasn't expecting much from this cafe when it walked in... It looks cute enough but not designed or anything. But the foods pretty good. I would say its thornburys version of red door corner store. My only gripe was the caramelised onion with the cured trout... Umm whatever that was the combo doesn't work at all. Apart from that big ups. Will be back.
Ajcajc
First visit today. Good, yummy food. I liked the baked eggs. Nice vibe. Cute little cakes. Ill go back.
Brunch-is-the-reason-I-don't-own-a-house.
Spoilt for choice in this area of Thornbury, but Jerry Joy is a top brunch spot. Coffee is consistently perfect, food is delicious and a changing specials menu tempts you away from trusty favorites. The staff are also so friendly, it's like brunching with friends.
Nigella
A little disappointed. Not sure if chef has changed but quality of food seems to have slipped a little in last few weeks. Prices also hiked up. Still my fav in the area, lovely staff and they make a great coffee but I think it's a bit rich to be charging loyal customers more for food that is perhaps not as good as it used to be.
Archie J
Excellent food. Have been a couple of times over past month. Like the location and the greenery around the tables outside, feels like a little hidden gem. Ate the mushrooms and hash the first time I went after asking what was good. It was very good, good quality dark mushrooms, goat's cheese, thicker bacon than normal. The second time I had baked eggs, also really good. Feta, chilli, chorizo, very tasty tomato sauce and really well cooked eggs. This is a cut above a lot of other local cafes.
Alyciaa
Coffee was great here. I had the Bircher with coconut sago and it was terrible. Coconut sago on top & blueberries were tasty, but underneath it all tasted like bird food - so, it just tasted like seeds & cardboard. Really disappointed! My boyfriend had the pikelets (I wanted them but couldn't get them due to my almond allergy) & said they were amazing. Do not try the Bircher!!! I'm hoping they bring out nut free pancakes as I would go back & try their food again.
Joelirwin87
Average. Went for coffee today. Ordered a strong latte. Wasn't strong. Was asked if I wanted water three times which is slightly annoying while I'm trying to read the paper. Small inside and with an open kitchen makes for a noisy experience.

Perfect coffee every time, always great service. Baked eggs are amazing- it's all we get because they are so good but all the friends I have taken there love everything else!<br/><br/><br/>-----18 Apr, 2015-----<br/><br/>Baked Eggs with Chorizo and Goats Cheese. Good Food, but check your bill and get the full receipt as they always seem to be overcharging!

Great. Haha i wish you could reply to reviews on here. 'my toast was buttered....with god knows what'...will somebody think of the children!?!?! It was probably butter mate.<br/>The place is great the staff and food and coffee are all well above average. And they are welcoming to my dog outside which is nice. The people there are nice too. Except for the occasional @Courage type...:P

Love the coffee!. Coffee here is consistently amazing! I've tried a lot of coffee in the brunch-heavy area of Preston, but will be coming back here just because the coffee is too good. Loved and highly recommend the steak and onion pie special with salad and fries. The side salad was not your standard lettuce and tomato, but had quinoa, red cabbage, capers and a mayonnaise type dressing which was surprising very tasty! The other dishes are fairly standard in terms of price and portion size.<br/>Great little venue amidst an area with lots of competition.

So glad this place has changed hands! The coffee used to be SO BAD when it was kitshen pantry. <br/>Now I come here at least once a week with or without my daughter. The binh mi is so delicious! And a really great price too. <br/>The cafe has a really relaxing vibe too. And dog friendly too.

Great local. After one visit we are very impressed. Excellent non pretentious service. Interesting and well constructed food. Good coffee. Not too crowded. Great find after we just moved to the area.

Fabulous. I've been here a few times now and each time have had the ceviche, because I loved it the first time I had it and didn't want to be disappointed that I hadn't ordered it if I ordered something else! However today I branched out and had the mushrooms and hash (truffle oil convinced me!) and it was sensational. Just the right amount of saltiness, totally delicious. Coffee is always good here too.

Very patient staff. My best friend lives opposite this great cafe. The staff were incredibly patient with two very hungover unable-to-decide-on-anything customers. The food was great too! Something a little bit different but yum. I had a very un-adventurous egg and soldiers, but it was all perfectly cooked and just what I needed :) my friend had a lovely strong cashew coffee which we were initially skeptical about, but very tasty. Will make this a regular cafe... Sorry! Will attempt to be more on the ball next time :)

Really nice neighbourhood eatery. Great to see somewhere new in this little residential section of Thornbury, especially given that it's branching out and being a little ambitious with its cookery. Staff were really friendly, but the food itself was great. Will return next time I'm too lazy to cook.

Had an amazing Cashew milk latte and the scrumptious gooey saucey baked eggs today! Only complaint is that it is a 30 min drive from home, otherwise I'd be there everyday!

So glad it's only two blocks away from home. Lovely staff, beautiful coffee and prompt service...this will be my regular...Be warned, it's rather busy Sunday, so you better be in fast to get a seat inside!

Jerry joy is like going to a friends house for breakfast. Walk in, greeted with smiles and hellos and there's always a familiar face to have a chin wag with.<br/>The restaurant layout is warming with an abundance of choices on display. Slices, cupcakes, quiches, pie, the list goes on.<br/>I had the eggs not Benedict special, a great take on the traditional dish, house corned beef, brioche and a sauce that came from somewhere not this planet. Around me people having thier own little food party on the other amazing dishes this place has to offer. Coffee is great, service is awesome. Casual but professional. Get around jerry joy cafe

Good food, lost its atmosphere. First visit for a few months, Food was fine, but the place has lost its atmosphere since the redeccoration, and with nothing on the walls, its much louder than it used to be when its busy. Ill be back to give it another try, but i might need to find a new local

Good local cafe. This place is a 5 minute walk from my house. I've come here a couple of times for brunch. The only recommendations are that the coffee should be hotter, every time I order one from here I have to ask for it to be extra hot, the portion sizes aren't hugely generous, not filling me up that much. Overall, this place is good, with a comfortable atmosphere and is local.

Great local cafe with yummy food, love the fritters and the cakes and great with kids. I just wish they were open until 4.30 so I could get coffee and cake on the way to the park!

Bad taste. I can't believe my review was removed. Good or bad you got to take it as it comes. This place is terrible. I am certainly not visiting again for burnt coffee and bad service.

This place looks fresh faced after the previous cafe. The fritters are fantastic and not too heavy. Also enjoyed the pad thai salad the first time I popped in. Really love the finishing touches of fresh herbs and edible flowers. The coffee tastes like cocoa. Yum!!!

Disappointing. Went there for breakfast - ordered scrambled eggs on toast with spinach, and a coffee. Wait staff disinterested, coffee came quick enough but cold! toast was buttered for me with who know what! the taste permiated throughout the spinach and eggs YUCK YUCK AND YUCK again, still cant get the taste out of my mouth and its hours later. Would not recommend... I don't know any café that butters your toast for you do you?

Loved it!!. Went for breakfast/brunch at Jerry Joy today and was super impressed. Delicious coffee, friendly staff, and the food was absolutely to die for!! One of the new Melbourne cafes that is totally elevating the standards of breakfast. It was the little herbs and flavours and extra touches that made the difference, will totally be coming back to try something else on the menu :) Keep up the good work

Congratulations Jerry Joy! My lunch crowd of ten 'time poor' diners. was well looked after. Everyone loved the dish they ordered. ALL of the staff were exceptionally helpful and went out of their way to assist. Compliments to the chef for a simple menu that is just a little unique. We're not telling our colleagues about Jerry Joy- we want it all to ourselves!!

Perfect for a lazy morning brunch. Finally got a chance to visit Jerry Joy - and definitely not disappointed! I had to share a couple of things with my sister - as there were too many options I wanted to try on the menu - the baked eggs with chorizo were definitely a favourite.<br/>A homely, relaxed and funky little cafe. Great to take the young nieces and nephews with the child friendly area around the side - will definitely make this a regular!

I checked out this place on the weekend - love it! There was a chilled vibe - great for a Sunday, seems a perfect place to read the paper over breaky or catch up with friends over proper quality coffee. I liked that it still had atmosphere without being over bearing or loud. We ordered a few different meals including the raw pad Thai with poached chicken (yum and healthy - winning combo), the pulled pork burger, the fritters and the baked eggs - all were presented well and delicious. This place ticks all the boxes for me - affordable & unpretentious, quality ingredients, consistently good coffee (we had a few between the group of us!) and unobtrusive service that was obviously coming from content staff. My only complaint is that it's now my friend's local and not near my place! Keep it up Jerry Joy.

Great atmosphere, awesome baked eggs, perfect coffee!

I wish I had one of these in my street. Breakfast was great and coffee was 10/10! Can't wait to try that Burger...

Not a great addition to the area. Coffee was very standard, and food was overworked and bland. Had the Pad Thai salad that its flavours didn't make sense. Place looks nice though

One Word. Amazing!!!!! <br/>My new weekend hang out, sorry Red Door I have a new local :)

Awesome!! Wish it was in my street.

So very very good!. Having been to Kitschen Pantry with both old and new ownership, I'm really happy these guys have had the guts to turn it into Jerry Joy and give Thornbury something it desperately needs.<br/><br/>The food is incredible - we had the beetroot fritters with kale, and the beef cheek (we were there after 12pm). Delicious to the last bite and really amazing presentation - edible flowers and microherbs.<br/><br/>Coffee was delicious, we even got takeaways and a few homemade treats for the road - brownie and monte carlo. UNREAL! So happy to say this is our local.

We visited today with 2 three year olds, very welcoming great coffee, lovely outdoor space with a kids table. The food looks great and the owners were lovely. Can't wait to come back for lunch.
