Review Super Ming - Thornbury

Muggle Chef
Lovely food, space and service :) The laksa was delicious. Nice and hot temperature wise which I like. Good flavour and portion size. I prefer some in the city in terms of richness and depth but i’m grateful to have good laksa in the suburbs! :) Caramel miso eggplant entree was awesome. Desserts were v sweet but tasty. I would like if some eggplant came on the laksa, and I prefer fresh mango to tinned on the dessert but otherwise great :) will be back.

The food and atmosphere was fantastic! The Supershrooms were our absolute fave and we can't wait to come back and try more of the dishes! A perfect date night cozy asian restaurant.

Quite disappointing in the lunch menu. Very pricey for the portion. Laksa soup not rich enough, pork belly dry and quite tasteless even with the sauce. Only the miso eggplant is passable.

Food was yummy, but very expensive and the potion sizes were so small! I ordered from the “Super” size potion of the menu and you can see in the photo below how small the portion was! Meh - you can get a much better port belly at Little Henry, four times the size for a cheaper price and just as nice.

Delicious and one of our favourite neighbourhood go to. The salt and pepper calamari and curry noodles are the best! Their chicken wings and pork baos are so tasty too!

Recieved wrong order. But i didnt want to make a fuss. My meal was $19. When i went to pay i didnt realise efpos minimum was $25 so i ordered a $10 take away dessert. In my opinion that dessert wasn't worth more then $5...... i think some sort of discount would have been fair considering i recieved wrong food.

We ordered the salt and pepper squid, satay skewers, Peking duck tacos and pork belly bao. The salt and pepper squid was by far the best of the lot and was very tasty. The other dishes were nice but small. Overall it was all waaaay over priced for what it was. Those 4 dishes cost $65. The skewers were tiny and the tacos fell apart as it was take away and the sauce had soaked through (not their fault but probably worth reconsidering how these are packaged for takeaway). Overall, I was happy to support a local business but feel as though the pricing was a fair bit off.

The food here is delicious and affordable. The vegetarian laksa is a standout. Friendly service and a social atmosphere.

Love the Kimchi fried rice and chicken wing dings ! My favourites I've tried almost everything on the menu and I must say it's all delicious . The lemongrass and lychee panacotta was an excellent refreshing dessert to the meal .
Simone Bellinger
Amazing. We loved everything! The atmosphere of the restaurant is great, service was friendly and attentive and the food was fabulous. We had salt and pepper squid which was amazing. We also had the curry, the greens and a few more dishes and all was so nice and so affordable! Yum!

Had high expectations after good reviews on here and was thrilled as it's so local. Just paid $20 for one tiny duck leg that was the same size as the chicken wing. Wings had zero hint of spice. $11 for some overcooked greens. Really, really disappointed. Perhaps eat in is better. I certainly hope so.

Absolutely fantastic Awesome food Going to make this a regular place to visit

Tonight was my first experience with Super Ming and I was VERY disappointed. I ordered laksa with seafood (take away). The seafood component was two prawns and a few small pieces of squid. There were a couple of pieces of broccoli and carrot but the bulk of the laksa was noodles. Most unsatisfactory! The others in my household had similar experiences with their meals too. Judging by some of the other reviews I've read, dining in might be a different experience but after tonight's meal, it's unlikely I'll be heading there any time soon.

Food was fresh and delicious - service was excellent and they wine was perfect. This will definately be a regular spot for lunch!
Jonathon Vilar
The best chicken laksa, dumplings and spring rolls I've ever had.
Mel Echo
Delicious Malaysian food. Friendly staff too! Will definitely be going back

Ordered chicken and seafood Laksa from suoerming via Deliveroo . Super fast service maybe 5 minutes from order to delivery!
Chicken and seafood laksa were tasty specially the soup and great portions. Generous amount of seafood and chicken in both soups. But chicken could have been more crispy and tasty and it would have been good to have roti . Will order again .

One of my favourite easy Asian places.

Super tasty Asian food in a nice setting. Favourites are the curries and the caramel eggplant dish! Nice staff and good wine list! Little bit pricey for this side of town however.

The food is always so fresh, light and tasty. Really great vegetarian options and it’s the cleanest restaurant around. Service is also good. Highly recommend

We were just walking by and decided to dine here because the interior looked nice. Really enjoyed the veg laksa, would return for sure. Service was also really friendly.

Stopped here for a laksa lunch. Delicious! Waitress was lovely. Fast service. Will come back to try other things in the menu because it all looked good.

Just had the chicken laksa. Fresh ingredients, tasty broth, boxes ticked. Nothing like a warm laksa on a miserable, wet and cold Melbourne day.

As residents of thornbury we have eaten with superming many times, we have tried to overlook their poor customer service, in particular the grumpy old woman who seems to run front of house. Also on numerous occasions takeaway orders have been incorrect i.e. missing chicken and other significant errors. This is particularly frustrating when you get home and serve the meal. Beer and wine, whilst well selected, is overpriced. In light of these shortfalls we have ceased our patronage.

Service is always super friendly. Decided to get takeaway which was really tasty.

The squid and kimchi fried rice are must haves which we got this time round. I find that the food is always really fresh and tasty. I also really like that they are doing something a bit different with their dishes. Well done team.

Food and service are great. I noticed they have a minimum eftpos policy at the store. I know how the terminal setups work/cost. So these shop policies irritate me. I’m marking them down 1 star for this.

Staff is super friendly! I had the eggplant which was delicious and springs rolls, super puffy and tasty. I also had the special fried rice, but different from the usual one but still really good.

Absolutely love Super Ming! It's our new favorite local. So many great items on the menu, very reasonably priced, food comes out fast, and service has been great each time. Love all the little touches around the restaurant that makes Super Ming supercool! Fave dishes so far include everything from the 'Sum Ting Small' part of the menu, fried rice and Massaman. Will definitely be back Super Ming :)
YMac
Love the food here! Very fresh and full of flavour. The chicken satay and fried rice wad delicious. Will definitely be going back here again and again.

Vegetarian Laksa was very good, a bit of a different take to what I am used to - but it came out very fast, vegetables seemed slightly undercooked, but had lots of noodles both rice and thicker egg noodles which was exciting. Would be nice to have soy sauce and chilli oils sitting on the table or ready for the customer to use without having to ask for it... that was a bit of a confusing process and may have been avoided if chilli oil and soy sauce sat on tables.

Terrific! Fresh ingredients, tasty, good value. Music was cool. Fast service (though we were dining late). Special prawn dumplings in chilli and vinegar sauce were amazing. Egg plant was delicious. Perfect after a few craft beers at Carwyn.

We ordered the crispy wings, bao, larb gai and steam rice.
Bao was tasteless.
larb gai- no taste. not spicy. needed more lemon.
steam rice never came. We had to tell them not to charge us.
Very dissapointing.

Really enjoyed the food here! I'm a big fan of the fried rice, the larb gai and the lemongrass chicken! The dishes are well priced as well, very reasonable with generous servings. The space itself is very intimate and inviting!

Have walked past this place several times but couldn't figure out what cuisine they do here. Being a Monday night and craving for asian something, with most places closed thought we would come check it out. It wasn't as busy as I have seen it but I have to say the minute we walked in the aromas was amazing. Four of us we ordered Hanoi spring rolls (very tasty), fried chicken wings, dumplings in chilli oil, Bao with pork belly, steamed rockling, curry chicken, miso eggplant (my favourite) and kimchi fried rice and a bottle of Italian red (very good and reasonable price). Overall I was pleasantly surprised, it was simple food but very tasty. Will try the recommended laksa next time.

AMAZING! I get the vege laksa and wings at least 3 nights a week-my home away from home.
Lovely staff and a personal favourite spot in Melbourne. Love you Superming!

Super Ming is nothing short of super. Great service, delicious food, friendly and polite staff. Highly recommend the beef massaman curry- so authentic. Will definitely be going back.

Awesome! My husband and I have been eating at Super Ming since it first opened, and it just gets better and better. Food is fantastic and great value, with very generous serving sizes. Absolutely loved the pork dumplings and laksa. The interior fit-out is fresh, and the overall feel to the restaurant is chill and relaxing.

I had dinner here last friday with my friends (that too on my recommendation) , after reading good reviews, it was a total let down. There are faaaar better restaurants in northcote serving the same cuisine. We ordered around 6 dishes but there isnt a single dish worth remembering. It was a complete rip off. Also the staff and orders are very mismanaged. We were getting stuff we didnt order and the one that we ordered never reached our table. But they were quick to charge us with everything.. never going back not even worth a second chance..
Foodie2010
Was a complete disappointment. We ordered the dumplings, supercharged fried rice, red curry and lemon grass chicken. The lemongrass chicken was salty with no lemongrass flavor at all, very mediocre kind of stir fry, could be made better at home. The curry was from a jar for sure, dumplings were ok but the staff were cheeky to serve 2 serving on a single plate and give us lesser than mentioned number of pieces . Fried rice saved the day.

The staff didn't seem care, They kept coming with incorrect orders for our table more than 3 times and then incorrectly charged us for 2 or more things. Overalll not so great so many better places around.

I got deliveroo service from here to try it out. I have to say I'm very impressed by the taste and freshness of the food. Can't wait to pop in some time soon for the full dinning experience.
Katie Parker
Ahhhhhhh-mazing! So good. We inhaled the pork belly bao, spicy fried squid, and chicken curry with rice and roti in under 5 mins. It's the best deliveroo choice in our neighborhood and we've tried everywhere. Super impressed, Super Ming!

Food was excellent. Not too pricey and very tasty. Service was polite and friendly. Menu is simple to understand, not too many options.

*only suggestion is install a nice mirror in the toilets for the ladies 💄💋💄

We were in the area and glad we came across this restaurant. Will be back again.
Mad For Food
A fine little gem in thornbury. Food is prepared with attention and finesse. Staff are friendly and serving sizes generous. Food covers many areas of south east Asia. The Malaysian style curry was a spice hit and worth going back for. So far haven't had anything I didn't like. Kid friendly is a bonus too.

I Love this place!! a great addition to thornbury. The simple menu and everything is soo delicious. I would recommend the lemon grass chicken, kimchi rice and chicken laksa. Staff are also very friendly

what can I say , except that everytime my wife and I dine at Superming , the food has been exceptional, the sevice impeccable, By far the best modern asian food ( mid range) dinning in the north, the only thing I can add as constructive criticism is that the menu is fairly stagnant, a few more rotating weekly/monthly specials will keep the locals coming back !! :-) :-) keep up the good work
Caffiend
Pretty delicious pan-Asian cuisine drawing upon influences from Japan, China, Thailand and more. We had dinner delivered via Deliveroo and it didn't disappoint. It's great to have some good food from these regions at the top of Thornbury in what's a sea of pizza and burgers.
AmandaH
Who doesn’t love Asian food? Who doesn’t love having access to all types of Asian food under the one roof? However this type of menu can be worrying, as ‘Asian cuisine’ is so diverse; each region has particular techniques, flavours and ingredients. Can one kitchen perfect them all?
Lana Kate
Found this place on deliveroo. Food is amazing! Just what we were after, delicious flavours, not too heavy. Kimchi fried rice is great, loves the garlic greens - tasted so fresh. Will definitely be a repeat customer 👌🏼
Im_23
Great little Asian restaurant with a nice vibe and friendly service.
The chicken wings and fried squid were delicious however my only suggestion is to serve it with a condiment /sauce or lemon .. just something to break up the fried taste.
We had a red curry chicken for main which had delicious flavours. It probably could have had an extra bit of chicken in there as a lot of sauce was left over.
Overall tasty food which we enjoyed and would return for.
Josh
Very tasty authentic cooking. The staff were very friendly and attentive. This place is already very popular so get a move on and try for yourself. I would recommend super Ming to my friends and family.

Perfect addition to the area! Had the pork boa, calamari, chicken mince dish and dumplings! Small rice side and Hawkers beer and glass of wine great value for 2 people at $70! Can't wait to go back and try more of the yummy food.

I've been here twice and everything we have eaten has been fantastic. The decor is casual and modern and the food is beautifully presented and very affordable. Staff are very attentive and helpful. One of my favourite places in northcote/thornbury and probably the best Asian I have eaten in the area. Must try!
Jenilee Bell
Amazing! Not only was the food outstanding but the service is engaging, friendly and personalised. I can't recommend this place highly enough. They certainly deserve to be one of the highest rated restaurants in this strip. Count me in as a regular!
JJ
Have been twice. Food has been of good standard on both occasions. Highly recommend the squid and the eggplant dish. Menu could be expanded a bit though. Great addition to high street.

A great addition to this burgeoning Thornbury strip. We came last night to check it out, and quickly decided it will become a regular.
Food is fresh and flavoursome, with a nod to various Asian influences. The chicken curry was amazing, lots of aromatic spices but not overly hot. Excellent caramel eggplant and other sides.
Super friendly and helpful staff.
I really enjoyed my dinner here with some friends. Nice small restaurant that didn't feel overcrowded and everything about it had a lovely, fresh feel. The floor staff were great, with real chilled and friendly vibes.

As a Vegetarian, options were limited to 2 to three mains, but the menu is quite small so ratio wise, can't complain. I had the Vege laksa bowl and although I am new to Laksa's, it was the best I've had thus far by quite a bit. My partner had the soy caramel Eggplant which too was delicious. I feel it could do with something else small on the side though as it was just a piece (quite large piece) of Eggplant. Something small to balance flavours would be great.Wine list was nice and the prices of both food and wine were really reasonable.Welcome to Thornbury Super ming Crew. See you again soon

Had dinner here couple of days ago. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Food was delicious and I would definitely be back again. Do yourself a favour and get the kimchi rice. Was absolutely sensational.

First time here last night what a little gem.Food was great owner and her staff were wonderful I'll definitely be back to try other dishes 😋

Such a beautiful set up and super tasty food. The lady manager is very friendly and professional. Small modern Asian menu works very well. Highly recommended.

Impressed. The interior design is minimalist and classy. I love minimalism so I'm glad that it seems to be fashionable now for newly opened cafes and restaurants. Even the menu is minimalist, being just one side of an A4 page (and with fairly big text). Add to that a short drinks lists written in chalk on the wall, and just one dessert. I'm totally ok with a short menu if the food is good. And it was.

The peanut sauce for the roti was delightful. The soup for the laksa was flavoursome and about the best I've had. Our lemongrass and lychee panna cotta dessert was heavenly. The bowls and plates looked great, especially considering it's not a highbrow restaurant. But there were a few minor textural issues - the vegetables in the laksa were nearly raw, the noodles a little undercooked, and the rice was a bit mushy. Overall though the food was excellent, and I'd certainly come back.

Always exciting to see another restaurant pop up in this blossoming suburb. Ordered the laksa (t/a), was very impressed by the dish and if it wasn't for the $35 card minimum then I would be back.. can't get past it.. one person should be able to order dinner and pay on card.

Huge fan of this place - fantastic meal tonight and will certainly be back soon. Great menu options - would recommend the Larb Gai and Kimchi fried rice. Great vibe - nice quiet spot for after work dinner with friendly service and lots of smiles. Super Ming = super yum!

What the neighbourhood has been waiting for! Choice Asian street food in a casual and airy light-filled setting, with friendly non-pushy waitstaff. The food is really authentic and good portion sizes. They even deliver while you're having a drink at the Back Room @ Carwyn Cellars next door (tip: get the fried chicken wings!)

We dined at this little gem last weekend and the food was amazing! All the flavours were well thought out. Our favourite was the kimchi fried rice and the chicken larb gai. The atmosphere was fresh and lively with staff always willing to help. Thanks Super Ming for filling up our bellies with not only delicious food but also wonderful friendly service!
